I just keep finding new programs for my Mac! Today I was just surfing randomly and found this nifty little guy. The idea behind it is very simple.... "Free TV!" and so far it seems as if they deliver. Sure the selection is limited, but what do you expect? So far what I've seen available is an array of reality TV shows (YUCK!), educational programming (Ughhhh.....), and older movies and shows (Yay!). Forget all the rest. I'm happy with my old TV shows and movies . Right now I've got an episode of the original Star Trek going. Yes, I know, I'm a geek, but at least I'm not one of those people who are fluent in Klingon! Also I have two movies downloading (Dracula and Long John Silver). The transfer seems fairly quick although I'm not sure if this is because of the application itself or if I'm simply unused to the college ethernet when compared to the faint wireless that reached my room at home. Let me finish downloading and then I'll tell you more.

GRRRRR! My Dracula movie didn't work correctly. All the help I got was "Playback failed: Sometimes this can be solved by pressing the back button and then trying the video again" So what about when that doesn't work, because it sure didn't! That's ok though since the "Long John Silver" worked correctly and I discovered several wonderful old series,; I Dream Of Jeannie, Charlie's Angels, Macgyver, etc, etc.... I don't think they are full episodes, but am unsure. They seem to skip small sections to keep time down while still showing all the main parts of the episode :( Definately not cool.
Anyway AMP (Adobe Media Player) is a good idea but seems to have a few kinks that need working out (Like full episodes!.... Ability to have tabs or multiple screens..... and working movies!) Other than those I think it's a great place to see classics that buffer quite quickly.
-Note: The partial episode thing seems to only apply to a few like I dream of Jeannie and Charlie's Angels. Macgyver is definitely complete! Sweet! I haven't had enough time to test all of it yet, but think I might have just found a solution for TV at college. AMP is very slick appearing and seems to be easily integrated into my day.

I Got Wet :(

5:40..... Chik-Fil-A closes in twenty minutes. I'm really hungry so I grab my stuff and head out for the five to ten minute walk to the cafeteria. What do I see when I step out of Graham? Rain. Lots and lots of rain. I could always go back up and get an umbrella, but that would take too long. Same for driving over there and finding a parking space. Luckily I didn't bring my laptop and my messenger bag is fairly water-proof. So I make a run for it. Or at least start to. After 3.4 seconds of running I'm already so wet it really doesn't matter anymore and I decide that racing along in a worn out pair or flip flops isn't the best idea. Did you ever realize how it isn't the BEING wet that's annoying but the GETTING wet? Anyway I walked the rest of the way with a couple of people who were here for orientation this week. Lol I feel so knowledgeable now that I know where everything is and the orientation kids don't have a clue :P I got to Chik-Fil-A just in time to grab a sandwich and watch the last of the rain fall.

Stupid Vending Machine

Ugh! For the first time in forever I used a vending machine today. Normally these devices don't hold anything that tantalizes me, but on my way to a math test I spotted a bag of M&M's that looked delicious. So I whip out a dollar and am amazed when it is taken the first time since every time I can remember using the mechanism it always spits my money back out and I feel like I have to force feed it the cash. My mouth already watering I hit E6 and prepare for chocolatey delight (In case you can't tell I haven't had any chocolate since I started college). Then THIS happens....

That's just WRONG! On top of not giving me my candy it also jipped me 10 cents by only giving me a nickel in change. Well, of course, I now only want the sweet more than ever. Glancing left to right to ensure that no one is within visual range I smack the machine angrily. After repeating these actions several times this story came to my mind about a machine tipping over and squashing a person, needless to say I stopped abusing the machine and gently feed it another dollar. Catapult!

In engineering and design, my eight O'Clock class, we've been building catapults. Yeah, extremely fun. Really they aren't that difficult..... except for the part where you have to measure things like mass and angles, plug them into this

to figure out the exact distance a ball will be flung. Really and truly I have no idea how we actually got the formula part right since I did a good bit of the measuring and I'm not sure where I got the numbers I did, but it worked. We predicted the ball to be launched 222 cm past the point of departure from the arm (The picture is before we entered the right angle). So a ring/hoop was set up 222 cm away and we fired. The first time it bounced off the edge of the jerk of a hoop, but secound time it went in perfectly. Anyway, it was my turn to take the catapult to my dorm and I decided to play around for a few minutes......

The shoe didn't launch right because it was too heavy and kept falling off. There are two different ways to make the catapult fling things. First off, the quickest way, is what I did with the hairbrush,just push down on the arm. The activates the momentary switch which cuts off the current to the electromagnet keeping the metal pin in place. The secound way is to simply flick the switch to cut the current like I tried with the shoe. Unfortunately the shoe was heavy enough to limit its range.....alot. It was a pretty cool project, lol if anybody gets bored on a rainy day email me for the schematics and excel formula.

We talk a little but about this website, and we try to get people to actually check it out.

Oh, I almost forgot! We even had an in-person guest, Marcus B. We tried a couple call-in guests, but only one really talked to us.

We Feel Fine

Found this neat site ( wefeelfine.org ) the other day when I was looking at where my blogs views came from. Apparently this bright person came up with the idea to make a huge collage of internet feelings. Basically he created a web crawler that searches through sites and blogs for the words "I feel". Whenever this phrase is found it looks for words like "Love" "Hate" "Cool" "Awesome" "Sad" and other adjectives/adverbs. Once these are discovered it grabs the sentence or two containing them and any picture that is near them. A ton of these are then put into a rather interesting interface that is quite fun to play with (Hehe I like poking the dots). I'd recommend taking a look at it, the squares have pictures and quote while circles are just quotes. Oh and by the way at least a fifth of the ones I glanced at seemed sort of emo....... but the whole idea is very cool.

I can't believe it. This makes me feel very depressed. After all the making fun of my dad for being practically OCD about everything being clean and in place here I am in college starting to do the same thing. Sure I'm usually fairly neat, but I like things to be slightly messy just so my room looks lived in. Now? I have the sudden urge to keep everything exactly in place and whatever isn't is the metaphorical equivalent of a small five year old poking my arm rhythmically going "Now are you annoyed? How about now? Now? What about now?" Ugh, this is awful. Fortunately my room mate's stuff doesn't bother me. I have absolutely no urge to straighten his stuff up. Here, compare.......

Septimus Heap ~Book Three~ Physik

*Sigh* It's official, what I like to call sequel syndrome has finally reached the Septimus Heap series. While Mrs. Sage provided small bits of newness in "Physik" the novel still seemed stagnant. All the hilariously ridiculous characters that made the first book so wonderful (And to a lesser extent the secound) were winnowed down to a bare handful who's oddities had been toned way down. Of course this might have been fine if there had been some new characters introduced that were even close to as ludicrous as the originals had been. I understand Mrs. Sage probably wants to further develop her characters but she does so at a cost to what made me enjoy the first novel, the unexpected wittiness and insanity of the people in her book. I suppose the third was decent but not one I would read over again (And if you know me then you know I tend to reread almost everything eventually). Oh, one last note, all the author had to do to redeem the novel for me was to give Bert a few moments of attention. I miss the cat-turned-into-a-duck-that-attacks-when-annoyed :( ........ poor Bert

our official motorized vehicles are coming to the end of their mechanical lifecycle and the time to replace them has come yet again. (oh, official fleet vehicles, they grow up fast...)

therefore, since complex, intricate and highly effective environmental initiatives are in abundance and in vogue as of late, the Ministry of Words, Sports and Tourism would like to make the joyous decision to opt in for a “greening” of our official vehicle fleet...

...and we aim to achieve this bold objective by purchasing cheaper, economical, ideologically-friendly models of vehicles and then painting them the colour of green.

so, to advance our environmental objectives, our procurement experts have narrowed the competition down to three (3) choices, with a fourth acting as backup third choice in case of sever mechanical breakdown in any of these reliable vehicles, and have identified the three shades of green paint that have proved to be most greenly-friendly.

so, without further a due, here are the select three (3) candidates:

1. the reliable, stoic Trabant P60, built by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau and driven here by a team of respected, highly-trained white-labcoat chimps.

2. the repressed, intellectual Wartburg 353, built by Automobilwerk Eisenach and driven here by no one in particular.

On a much happier and joyful note, our total online views of our videos has surpassed 2,500 views. That says something right there. Not a lot, but good nonetheless. Whoa... that's a long word. Nonetheless. None-the-less. Nonetheless. Ok, done.

Batman: The Dark Knight

I went to watch the new batman movie tonight with a group and was pleasantly surprised with the reasonably complex plot. Ok, I'll admit it, the plot was a tangled web that had me barely keeping a step ahead of it and even then it tricked me a couple of times. In fact I think I'd need to re-watch it again in order to catch everything. For a movie to keep me guessing is fairly rare, but The Dark Knight was very well written (Yeah, yeah, it looked awesomely sweet too!). Of course the ending made me sort of angry. I won't give anything away but the end was one of those "Ok, everything is messed up for the main character but thanks to him nearly everyone else is good to go." if that makes any sense. By the way "The Joker" is now officially ranked in my top-ten most hated/favorite villains. While the guy is certainly a nutcase he also has style (Gruesome style that makes you detest him, but style nonetheless). Last thing before I go catch some much needed sleep, I especially enjoyed the story's portrayal of a few doing right and creating a ripple effect of hope. Anyway I definitely liked the movie and can't wait for the third to come out (If for no other reason than so that I can stop feeling sorrow for Batman!).

P.S. Thankfully like in Batman Begins there was no Robin in the movie. I just never really got the point of the superfluous sidekick other than to say (Wait for it.....) Holy awful, abundant, annoying, acrid, awkward, abominable, absurd, alliterations Batman! ....... and the tights kind of weirded me out too......

E3 2008.....What Happened?

E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). Known to those who play video games as THE place to find out about new games coming out for the next year. The event used to be incredibly hyped up and attended by up to 70,000 people! So why am I yawning while looking over the highlights for this year's E3? Because there are none. A couple of years ago E3 became a private event. So that 70,000 audience? Now it's down to 4,000 or so and the excitement level seems to have followed suite. Sony was its normal arrogant self and claimed to be the leader in video games and innovation with its blue-ray player. Is it just me or does it seem sad that a gaming console's only mentionable feature is the ability to play movies? Also considering the fact that their sales are way behind either Nintendo or Microsoft.....Yeah..... Of course I would normal take Nintendo's side but they weren't much better. Known for it's ability to come up with something different Nintendo fizzled this year with only an attachment (The point of which I still don't get), snowboarding (Kinda cool, but too expensive with the balance board), and a sequel to wii-sports (Which might be ok, but isn't exactly anything new). Why?!?! I was looking forward to the announcment of a new Zelda or Mario game and they give us refinements on past things? Oh I do have to say though, SPORE looks pretty awesome. Unfortunately the full version's only announced for computers. So lastly we come to Microsoft. Yeah, forget that, I just checked and nothing interesting jumped out at me. While I'm not saying that there aren't any good games that were announced this year, I am saying that there simply wasn't anything (Other than Spore) that made me think "Wow! That looks awesome! When does that come out because I really want to play it!" Maybe this is because I was hoping for at least some slight mention of the kingdom hearts series or Stargate Worlds. Seriously, is it that difficult to just give a few details? Yeah, yeah, I know that there is supposed to be a new KH game this year and that Stargate Worlds come out within a year, but still....

So yes, we've come out with our second official podcast. We just did some recording while watching the All-Star game in Ev and Chan's basement. Isn't that exciting? I certainly thought so.

So I'm at Wal-Mart today thinking "Ohhhh! Mint chocolate would be so awesomely great right now!" Since right now I only have a box of cereal in my dorm room and I like variety (Just ask my family about smoothies and watch the distorted faces and dry gagging for assurance on how much I like variety in food). So I grab some gum and a bag of chocolate mint things when this little voice pops up in my head, for some reason it sounds like my health-freak (Said in a loving way!) older sister, Megan. The little invader convinces me that chocolate (Aside from a few measly anti-oxidants) isn't all that great for me. I know! Craziness, right? But by the time I reach the self-check out register that little devil has convinced me that I don't really have a craving for chocolate, no..... I want pretzels.... and raisins..... and I'm almost out of water too..... Luckily I'm enjoying my food stash since pretzels and raisins make great snackage. Just wanted to show how older siblings can have negative effects on the younger members of the family :P Hehe

First off I must say, I am extremely impressed with ALEKS customer support. Here I go and voice my complaints on a blog still in its infancy and they hunt down the mention of their product. Which, by the way, is fairly good despite my whining :P While it can be frustrating every now and then ALEKS does an excellent job of spotting a student's weakness and drilling them on it. While I still maintain my dislike of ALEKS (Sorry, but it's math. Math + Me = Occasional Vexation. I don't like to be irritated....) I must say that they have a superb customer service division. Yeah, I know, it doesn't take much to get compliments from me, but seriously how many companies bother checking out how people feel about their work and then actually responding to them? Hmmm..... if I criticize Windows Vista will Bill Gates comment.......oh wait! Shoot, he's retired now. I'd say I'd criticize Apple to get a Steve Jobs comment, but so far I haven't found anything to complain about. :) (No.....there's no Apple fanboyness here.....) Anyway just wanted to say that it's cool to know that somebody from the ALEKS company read my post.

Ok, before anyone thinks I'm talking about a real person or something allow me to explain. ALEKS is an online math.....something. Exactly what I'm unsure. We take quizzes and such through it and are able to review materials from class. Sounds useful right? Well it is to a certain extent except for the fact that a Hamster has more intelligence than ALEKS. No seriously I'm not joking. As you know, I'm a computer guy. So allow me to be the first to tell you that computers are imbeciles. No, really, they are. A computer has absolutely no idea of how to do something until it is told exactly how and given precise guidelines. Anyway I'll stop my brief rant and merely leave you with this monument to ALEKS's brilliance......
