Let's have something a little different today. When's the last time you went to the theater?

This bit is a conversation between John Wilkes Booth (the guy who shot President Lincoln) and Lee Harvey Oswald (the guy who shot President Kennedy). It's taken from a theater show called Assassins, which explores all of the people who have tried (and often succeeded) to kill US Presidents. The great Stephen Sondheim was composer.

One little bit of interest for my european friends. For a long time in the States we had what's known as the 20 year curse. As the legend goes, an Indian woman, as her village was being burnt to ground and her tribe slaughtered by the American governemnet, put a curse on the leaders of the US. Every President elected in a year ending in zero, 1840,1900, 1920, etc would die in office.

AND..... curiously enough:

President Harrison, elected 1840: died of pneumonia

President Lincoln, elected 1860: shot by John Wilkes Booth

President Garfield, elected 1880: shot by Charles Guiteau

President McKinley, elected 1900: shot by Leon Czolgosz

President Harding, elected 1920, died of heart attack (conspiracy theories abounded that he was poisoned)

President Roosevelt, elected 1940 (amongst other years), died of cerebral hemorrhage

President Kennedy, elected 1960, shot by Lee Harvey Oswald

All died in office.

After this the curse stops. Reagan (e. 1980) WAS shot, but he obviously lived. Bush would be the next (e. 2000) but with 3 months to go, i'm going to go ahead and simply assume he will make it to end just fine. The "curse" does in fact seem to have ended. Interesting though, no?

And thus, i give you a nice little dramatic conversation. One assassin to another.

"Dil ek Mandir" was a movie full of melancholic songs, and almost all of them went on to become popular. This blog has discussed one song from this movie already. Here is another song from this movie.

Sung by Lata, this song was picturised on Meena Kumari who sings in front of Raj Kumar. Lyrics of Hasrat and music of Shankar Jaikishan do the rest. I have not seen the movie, but if the picturisation of the songs is anything to go by, I suppose watching the movie could be a painful experience. Listening to sad songs and watching their video should be sufficient for me, I feel.

Song- Hum tere pyaar mein saara aalam (Dil ek Mandir 1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

ham tere pyaar mein saaraa aalam
kho baithe hain
kho baithe
tum kahte ho ke aise pyaar ko bhool jaao, bhool jaao
ham tere pyaar mein saaraa aalam
kho baithe hain
kho baithe
tum kahte ho ke aise pyaar ko bhool jaao, bhool jaao
ham tere pyaar mein saaraa aalam

panchi se chhudaakar uskaa ghar,
tum apne ghar par le aaye
ye pyaar kaa pinjraa man bhaayaa,
ham jee bhar bhar kar muskaaye
jab pyaar huaa is pinjre se,
tum kahne lage aazaad raho
ham kaise bhulaayen pyaar teraa,
tum apni zubaan se ye na kaho
ab tumsa jahan me koi nahin hai
hum to tumhare ho baithe
tum kahte ho ke aise pyaar ko bhool jaao bhool jaao
hum tere pyar me saaara aalam

ik tere charan ki dhool se
hamne apni jeewan maang bhari
jab hi to suhaagan kahalaayi, duniyaa ke nazar mein pyaar bani
tum pyaar ki sundar muurat ho, aur pyaar hamaari puujaa hai
ab in charnon mein dam nikle, bas itni aur tamannaa hai
hum pyar ke Ganga jal se balam ji tan man apna dho baithe
tum kahte ho ke aise pyaar ko bhool jaao bhool jaao
hum tere pyar me saaara aalam

sapno ka darpan dekha tha
sapno ka darpan tod diya
ye pyar ka aanchal hamne to
daaman se tumhaare baandh liya
ye aisi gaaath hai ulfat ki
jisko na koi bhi khol saka

tum aan base jab is dil mein
dil phir to kahin na dol saka

o pyaar ke saagar ham terii laharon mein naav dubo baithe
tum kahate ho ke aise pyaar ko bhuul jaao, bhuul jaao
hum tere pyar me saara aalam
kho baithe hain
kho baithe
tum kahte ho ke aise pyaar ko bhool jaao bhool jaao
hum tere pyar me saaara aalam

I have mentioned earlier that S D Burman tended to sing one song per movie and that one song was usually played at the beginning on the movie while the credits would roll in on the screen.

In some cases, S D Burman song would be played at the end while "The End" screen was on the verge of appearing and the audience were in a hurry to leave the movie hall.

The Bandini song " mere saajan hai us paar" is one such song that gets played at the last moments of the movie. Ashok Kumar disembarks from a train hauled by a steam locomotive and unknown to him, Nutan too is in the same train. As Ashok Kumar boards a steam ship, and the ship is about to set sail, Nutan makes it to the ship at the 11th hour and 59th minute. I suppose there was nothing like security checks etc on sea ships on those days.

Jokes apart, this song from a movie full of some of the saddest songs in Bollywood history, marks a fitting finale to a memorable melancholic movie.

Song- Mere saajan hain us paar (Bandini 1963) Singer-S D Burman, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD- S D Burman

Last week began the seven part series on the history of the Corvette, starting with the first genera

Last week began the seven part series on the history of the Corvette, starting with the first generation of Corvettes. This week, we're looking at the Corvette's next evolutionary leap: the 1963-67 "C2."

With an established reputation and a (finally) profitable product line, the guys in the Corvette design and engineering team got down to the business of building a second generation of "the poor man's sports car." Japanese-American designer Larry Shinoda had already conceived a prototype, dubbed the "Mako Shark" after the deadly sea creature that inspired it, which toured autoshows across the country in 1961. Thankfully, basing a sportscar around the shape of a fish worked out for GM's design department, something that BMW wouldn't pull off forty years later with the "Moby Dick" shaped Z4 roadster.

Of course, with the mechanical wonders that Zora Arkus-Duntov's team put under the ride, The General could have signed off on a goldfish-shaped car and still sold thousands. Right off the line, the new 'Vette featured four-wheel independent suspension, something that's still not available on many rear-wheel drive cars. Up front, engine options were limited to the 327 c.i. small block V-8, in both carbureted and fuel-injected versions, kicking out 260 and 350 horsepower, respectively. 1963 was also the only year to have a split rear window and fake chrome hood louvers, both of which had disappeared by 1964.

1965 came in with more goodies than a fat kid on Halloween. For starters, the Duntov dream team had installed 4-wheel disc brakes on every single Corvette. And in order to make use of the improved stopping power, Chevy offered the all-new Mark IV 396 big-block as a 425 horsepower alternative to the 327 small-block. Within a year, the big engine was bored out to 427 cubic inches, and by 1967 came with an optional "tri-power" triple Holley carb setup, grinding the pavement with up to 435 h.p. And if you were one of the lucky twenty buyers that year, you might have driven away with the L-88 427 c.i. engine package. Although it was officially rated at 430 horsepower, most owners claimed the car felt closer to the 550-horse range. Today, the L-88 has become the most sought-after Corvette, fetching over $600,000 at auction.

Although the Corvette was slowly drifting closer to its American musclecar roots than its European styling influences, the little coupe that could was quickly coming of age. Zora Arkus-Duntov himself was even overheard saying "finally, a Corvette that I would not be ashamed to drive in Europe." And now, with a battle-hardened design and engineering team behind it, the Corvette was ready to enter the big-engine era of the North American automobile in high gear.

And here's where I reveal my dirty little secret; this fuel-injected '63 split-window is the centrepiece of my own personal collection, spanning over 15 vehicles in almost every automotive genre. I've always preferred to stay modest about my garage, but it's time I came out and showed my loyal readers what I'm really all about. In fact, here's a picture of my 'Vette parked in its usual spot:

Ok, so April Fool's is a few months off, but for those of you who haven't figured it out, this '63 stingray is the centrepiece of my Hot Wheels collection-or at least the Hot Wheels that I didn't completely mangle as a kid. Not seen here is the Adam West-era Batmobile, a '32 coupe in primer and flames, and enough 1/64th scale farm equipment to plant a good-sized crop. For pictures of real (bitchin') C2 Corvettes, come back Friday for our first "Free Wallpaper Fridays!"

¿No creen? ;) .

Cast: Steve McQueen, James Garner, James Donald, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson.

Genre: War Film

This film definitely is a part of the Creme-de-la-Creme of the best of the hollywood war films. Released in 1963, the film depicts the efforts of around 250 allied prisoners of war trying to escape from a German POW camp during the second world war. Though, the film is based on a true story, there are a few discrepancies with the actual reality, but that doesn't really undermines in anyway, this beautiful film.

The German High Command establishes a highly secure prisoner camp, for some of the most successful, yet captured, escaped prisoners of war. They believe in putting all these men, together in order to keep a watch on them with real tight security available during the second world war.

The movie begins with Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett ( Richard Attenborough ) coming into this camp. He heads the escape committee and formulates the plan to escape along with the other prisoners by digging three separate tunnels named 'Tom', 'Dick' and 'Harry'. He does, so to ensure, that even if one of the tunnels is found by the Germans, they still don't fall back on their plans.

The cunning manner in which the prisoners, organized into teams, cover the noises and get rid of the dirt which comes from digging the tunnels is quite amazing. 'Tom' is found by the guards, amongst the celebration of American Independence Day by the prisoners. Seeing this, already depressed flying officer Archibald Ives ( Angus Lennie ) cracks down and goes for a desperate lunge and climbs on the barbed wire fence to escape and is gunned down by the guards.

Flight Lieutenant Hendley ( Played by James Garner ) befriends a German guards and arranges for a camera, and eventually fools him and slicks his ID card, which is then copied for each of the prisoners to render in the escape plan.

Capt Virgil Hilts played by Steve McQueen, finds a blind spot in the camp, a place in the camp near the wires, which is not visible from any of the guard towers. He then escapes, by cutting through the wires one night, and gets himself caught after a few days. He spends some time in the 'Cooler', a place within the camp, which is secluded from the rest of the camp and prisoners. When he returns from the cooler, he has all the information about the location of police stations and railway stations and possible escape routes in the vicinity.

On the final day, only 76 of them manage to escape from the prison camp, and the rest of them are caught. After various attempts to reach the allied nations , either Switzerland , Sweden or Spain, most of the prisoners are either captured or killed. Only 3 of the prisoners manage to escape from Germany in the end.

There are a few scenes which are certainly noteworthy. Roger is identified in a railway station, as he says 'Thank You' in response to a German officer's comment ' Have a good day ! '. The motorbike stunts by Virgil Hilts as he attempts to cross the border is quite amazing. Some of these stunts were performed by Steve McQueen himself. Ives cracking down, and going towards the wire, in a state of total desperation calls for applauds. The particular scene in which most of the prisoners are executed, when they are least aware of it.

The hindi film Deewar starring Amitabh Bachchan and Akshaye Khanna is based on this film.

Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough steal the show but every other actor gives out his best in this film.

Richard Attenborough is the old guy from ' Jurassic Park '. I am sure, you guys would have identified him by now, if you have seen ' Jurrassic Park '. He also directed and produced 'Gandhi' in 1981.

I would give this film, 8/10, if someone does care about my rating :)

War over territory or war over arrogance? China-India War 1962-1963

What I can know in china about the war
1. We won easily.
2. We gave those military devices back to India after having them repaired to despise Indian and to humiliate them.
3. Surprisingly, the territory is still in Indian hands (Arunachal Pradesh).

What's wrong with Han Chinese?
Probably, there are many explanations. But arrogance is absolutely one of the factors affecting Han Chinese behavior.

As I walk along I wonder a-what went wrong
With our love, a love that was so strong
And as I still walk on, I think of the things we've done
Together, a-while our hearts were young

Why
Ah-why-why-why-why-why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway, run-run-run-run-runaway

Some friends from within the ranks of the "Conspiracy Crowd", have pointed me in the direction of this "heinous legislation imposed by the Codex Alimentarius Commision, enforced by the WTO through sanctions... subverting our laws... listing 7 Vitamins as Toxins". For the amount of Videos and Websites relating to this issue, there is a lack of substantive claims (Claims that are Substantiated by Sources of Fact or Proof). Speculative claims of Conflict of Interest, and "Vitamins labelled toxins" are rampant throught these films and articles, not a one with a reference to their proof. The majority of their damning quotes were recorded by themselves, a bias opinion obvously, with no other record. Watch for Codex In the "Areas of Interest".... I have read all the Codex Alimentarius Guidlines for the products in question(Vitamins and minerals, Infant formula etc.) and have found nadda(lol, guilliani)!

1963 Gibson ES 330 TDC (Thinline, Double Pickup, Cutaway) Serial Number: 119427 Right-handed (pics are flipped, and my software can't flip them back, sorry...) ***NO RESERVE*** This is my first electric guitar, purchased when I was a senior in high school, 1989. It was already pretty well worn, full of spider cracks and the finish was faded out, more brownish in the front and a beautiful red in the back. The tone was a sweet, rich bluesy sound and I spent the next four years or so playing in a blues / classic-rock band rather than studying for college. Through a proper tube amp, the sound really cannot be matched. I set it aside and just started playing again this last year. Unfortunately, I'm moving overseas and getting rid of all of my stuff. Condition: this is not even close to a perfect collector's item. Spider cracks everywhere. Finish is faded to brown in front, but still a deep red in the back. A couple of small chips in the paint along the edge, slightly corroded switches and potentiometers, and one missing volume knob. BUT it plays very well. The neck is nice and straight, frets are fine, and the strings are close to the neck. Whenever I put the guitar away for more than a few days, I loosen the strings. I also keep a humidifer in the case itself. If you are like me, you want an instrument, not a museum piece. I like a guitar to match the blues I play, which is not a neat-pressed, bow-tied, wine-and-cheese affair. I'll include a hard case along with the guitar. That's why I'm charging $75 shipping. Case is pretty heavy. Note: the case is probably as old as the guitar, and has -- I find this hysterical -- "THE HOBIT" and "S. CHORNEY" stenciled on it. Dude misspells "hobbit". Lord, lord, lord... Case is pretty broken down. Handle is broken on one side and I just wrap my arm around the whole thing to carry it. So, I'm really just using the case to make sure shipping is safer. You'll want to repair this case, or, better yet, just buy a new one. But in a box, it will see the guitar through shipping safely. For reviews, check out epinions. People really love this. I don't know how much it's worth, so I'm putting it up with no reserve. I do hope the winning bidder will PLAY this thing. It means more to me that it's played than how much money it goes for... So, if you're not going to play it, or give it to someone who does, can I ask that you bid on the next Gibson hollowbody to come around and pass on mine?

"Dil ek mandir" is one of those musical blockbusters that were common in 1950s and 60s, where almost every song would become very popular and even evergreen.

I have heard this song "ruk jaa raat thahar ja re chanda" many times, often without knowing which movie the song is from. I have never seen the movie, and I had not seen the video of the song either till recently.

But the song itself paints a vivid picture which every listener can visualise in his/ her minds eyes in technicolour, that is how well Lata has sung this song. I have always found this song incredibly romantic and sensuous, all that by just listening to this song, and the way Lata has sung it.

To the present generation, the picturisation of the song may appear to belong to the dark ages, but we have to keep it in mind that the movie was made in 1963, nearly 35 years ago, when women in India were regarded as charnon ki daasi to her husband and was supposed to touch his feet, serve him like a servant etc.

The song itself is quite modern by the standards of India during that period. Shailendra has excelled in writing this song, as he always did. Shankar Jaikishan, the music director has got the best out of Lata. Here is one song that shows that like Madan Mohan,Shankar Jaikishan too could get the most out of Lata in those days. The fact that Lata was at the peak of her singing prowess during that time certainly helped matters.

L'opération a donc donné ceci.
