<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I've been checking out what those clever bods at MIT's media lab have been working on. Their latest augmented reality stuff is interesting, there a video of some of their work <a title="MIT's augmented reality demo" href="http://acg.media.mit.edu/people/simong/installationNew/demo.html" target="_blank">here</a> .</p>
<p>I'm as interested in the comments made on U.S. Newswire messageboards about this technology as I am in the research itself (to get some idea of how ordinary folk see it being applied). The universal view seems to be that it's only going to come into it's own for porn and first person gaming and is otherwise just a gimmick. To contridict this public view I noticed that similar technology is now being used by interior designers in the U.S. to give clients a 3D view of their 'proposed' layout which allows them to walkthrough and inspect the fixture and fittings from any angle (like 3D CAD syle but with a real world backdrop). Also I've seen that one of the spin-offs of the media lab work is the <a title="3D T.V. article" href="http://thefutureofthings.com/news/1242/bright-future-for-home-3-d-display-technology.html" target="_blank">3D T.V.</a> stuff coming on stream this year.</p>
<p>What may seem to some like just a bit of fun can have some very useful real world applications. I'm still not convinced that researching the correct sogginess of Rich Tea biscuits dunked in tea is going to have any profound spin-offs but maybe I'll be proved wrong and perhaps correct sogginess is important to avoid global conflicts or some such. Chaos theory triumphs again! Oh Mandelbrot.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Un projet européen de téléphone portable à affichage 3D]]></title>

Le projet, qui a débuté au 1er février 2008, doit durer trois ans. Il sera mené en collaboration avec l'Université d'Helsinki (Finlande) et les sociétés Fraunhofer (Allemagne), Telefonica (Espagne), Holografika (Hongrie), et Streamezzo (France). Il est financé par le 7e Programme Cadre de recherche et développement technologique de l'Union Européenne.</p>

<p style="font:normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;margin:0;">Le projet "<a href="http://www.3dphone.org/">3DPHONE</a>" vise à développer une téléphonie mobile avec un nouveau type d'affichage 3D, ouvrant la voie à de nouvelles utilisations. Le type d'affichage 3D "réel" développé dans ce projet est différent des systèmes classiques : il ne s'agit pas d'holographie, ni de stéréoscopie, et l'image est visible depuis un champ étendu. Ce type d'affichage existe déjà en grand format, grâce aux travaux récents de la société partenaire Holografika.</p>

<p style="font:normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;margin:0;">Les différentes technologies qui seront développées couvrent les dispositifs mobiles d'affichage (écran) et de capture (caméras multiples) d'images 3D, les interfaces utilisateurs et les logiciels qui devront tirer parti de toutes les possibilités qu'offre cet affichage, et des formats de représentation ainsi que des algorithmes de compression des données permettant la lecture et l'enregistrement de contenu vidéo 3D, ainsi que la communication 3D en temps réel.</p>

<p style="font:normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;margin:0;">Ce projet, financé par le 7e PC à hauteur de 3,5M euros, s'inscrit dans la continuité de deux précédents projets européens : "ATTEST" (5e PC) et "<a href="http://www.3dtv-research.org/">3DTV</a>" (6e PC). Ce dernier, également dirigé par l'Université de Bilkent et s'appuyant sur un consortium de 20 partenaires européens dont deux autres universités turques (Koç et METU), est encore en cours et fournira une base technologique avancée en matière de vidéo tridimensionnelle.</p>

Enquanto todos os olhares estão voltados para o mesmo lado: iptv, tv digital, etc... a Philips mira bem mais alto! Chamada de 3DTV, a TV tridimensional é real e já vem sendo comercializada para uso profissional.</p>
<p>Sem a necessidade de usar aqueles óculos bizarros, que filtram as imagens que devem ser vistas por cada olho, a tecnologia <a href="http://www.business-sites.philips.com/3dsolutions/about/Index.html" target="_blank">WOWvx</a> da Philips faz com que as imagens sejam emitidas na tela de forma especial, fazendo com que cada olho enxergue determinado ângulo do mesmo ponto, criando uma noção de perspectiva e dando a impressão que as imagens estão saindo da tela.</p>
<p>Com um processador dedicado, a nova TV consegue gerar 9 diferentes imagens que correspondem a 9 diferentes ângulos, garantindo que o telespectador veja pontos distintos em cada olho independente da posição que esteja.</p>
<p>Inicialmente, a 3DTV será comercializada, no modelo LCD 42", para desenvolvedores de comerciais em 3D. Vale salientar que a  TV também consegue transmitir imagens em 2D no formato HD (high definition).</p>
<p>O grande desafio da Philips é arranjar conteúdo 3D para exibir com a nova tecnologia. Um mercado que tem se mostrado promissor é o dos jogos.  A nova geração de video-games já trabalha com objetos 3D apesar de transformá-los em 2D para exibir nas telas de hoje em dia. Já imaginou você jogando Counter-Strike em três dimensões...</p>
<p>Pois é pessoal, a Philips espera que as 3DTVs estejam nas lojas a partir de 2009, até lá ficaremos com os benditos óculos...</p>
