Post from Sept. 24–yes, I know it’s Oct. now–but I wrote it and gosh darn it, it

Post from Sept. 24--yes, I know it's Oct. now--but I wrote it and gosh darn it, it's goin' up! Most everything has changed: I'm no longer sick, though I do still suck at both jobs, it seems. And that playlist pretty much just annoys the hell out of me at this point. But maybe you're as lame as I and still actually haven't heard of a few of these folk. xoxo!

"Production”—those three to four weeks of hellacious crunch time in which we put together a magazine—supposedly ended last, last Friday, but disaster struck in two of my stories that I supposedly fact-checked (though apparently failed to do so thoroughly enough). And being thorough-anal is kinda my sole talent.

Lately I’ve felt like I’m terrible at both of my jobs, and since all I do is work, that sort of implies that I suck at life in general. I even found a Ben & Jerry’s flavor I do not care for (Fossil Fuel—I’m pretty sure that’s Hershey’s in there.)

Tonight I made a bunch of carrots for dinner but finally admitted – I fucking hate carrots. There’s a big pot of ‘em here if you’re into that sort of thing.

While dying of overwork/migraines/sinus infections for the last two weeks, I had a lot of thoughts.

But then I didn’t write them down.

Guess those are gone.

One thing I’m constantly reminded of is that sometimes I feel like saying to people that if they don’t watch Mad Men, they can’t understand what I’m feeling. This happens on Monday mornings in particular, which is why I love this someecard. There is nothing so fun as absorbing oneself in a show that’s completely outside of one’s realm. Perhaps this is why I love Mad Men, hate The Biggest Loser, and have mixed feelings about Desperate Housewives (if you have to pick, at least go all the way and be Bree.)

I like things that are ironic. According to some/many/most/anyone who knows better, I use that word incorrectly. What I mean to say is things that are “just plain wrong!” Things that are funny because they’re such oxymorons. (You’re an oxymoron.)

Like that David Hasselhoff judges America’s Got Talent, or that Jerry Springer is the host. That Avril Lavine’s tour is called, “The Best Damn Tour Ever,” and to prove it you can see her live video from Toronto. That they save Lipstick Jungle and dropped Cashmere Mafia, a show that was actually enjoyable to watch.

The problem with blogging for me is that I have to fact check every damn little thing. It’s just ingrained in me these days. Like how to spell, “Hasselhoff.” It takes 20 extra minutes to write each damn sentence.

So let’s stick to the basics. If you want to know what I’m listening to, you really only need turn on the radio. As Trish would spit out in disgust, I have rather ridiculously mainstream taste in music. She’d cringe knowing I go to—gasp!—the homepage of the iTunes store to see what I’m missing out on.

That’s right, right now on my playlist:

1. Kanye’s Love Lockdown – #1 on iTunes! Can you listen to this and not turn everything into a drum set? (p.s. I’m the best air drummer ever. Don’t know if you knew that.)
2. Plushgun’s Impolite: love, love, love, makes me happy.
3. I like these Blitzen Trapper folk.
4. Still not over Mika’s Grace Kelly, not going to lie.
5. MGMT’s Kids (frankly, anything by MGMT…)
6. I’m into the Audi commercial song, known as “Notes on Progress,” and available from their website
7. Disturbia – I have no idea what the fuck this song is talking about. Then again, am I supposed to? It’s like someone asked Rihanna to write a song for the soundtrack of a scary movie, and, well, she got all confuzled and kina took it literally?
8. Nope, not tired of Vampire Weekend, A-Punk yet.
9. The Story, Brandi Carlile http://www.myspace.com/brandicarlileband
10. Sigur Ros, Saeglopur (And their ultimate video: I can’t watch it myself because I cry every time, but you can enjoy it!)
11. Motion City Soundtrack, Fell In Love With You (kinda on my list—it usually makes me feel all Dawson’s Creek-y, which I’m not a fan of.)

I've always been back and forth on my liking of Vampire Weekend. I surely don't think they are as great as a lot of people make them out to be, but I find some of their songs to be really good. In my opinion, Vampire Weekend's songs can be really catchy or just kind of dull. Sometimes I view them a more put together and marketable version of The Walkmen.

I must admit that 'A-Punk' is on my list as one of the best indie songs to dance around to, while "Oxford Comma" is one of my favorite songs to listen to on a fall day and paint to. I guess the test of time will see if Vampire Weekend becomes a memorable indie band or just another generic hype machine. Its so hard to tell these days.

In any case, enjoy "Oxford Comma." Its a pretty damn fine video.

As I often tend to do I wandered around the shopping center today, mostly out of sheer boredom, perhaps partly out of that conditioned comfort of retail therapy cultivated from a culture of consumerism. Regardless once I arrived I stumbled across one of the greatest things I think I've ever seen.

There was a huge event being put on by HELCO a company with which I have many qualms with, above and beyond the fact that I have to write them a check every month. Included in the festivities was a competition involving the surrounding school's robotics clubs! Yes, ROBOTICS CLUBS. Hawai'i's high schools and middle schools have fucking robotics clubs. I'm more than a little jealous. They had a stand set up for the Hilo High Robotics Club program called Camp Eureka. Its a camp geared towards teaching kids how to program and build robots, more specifically its great to help prepare students interested in entering Lego based competitions such as the FIRST Lego League (FLL). I would have signed up in a heartbeat, if it wasn't meant for kids grades 3-6. Not sure why that should prevent me from joining. I'll just lie and say i have that wacky Robin Williams aging disease.

Near their information stand there was a large crowd gathered and as I got closer I saw a good sized arena laid out on the ground. Teams from various schools were gathered around the outside with large remote controls and robots were whizzing around inside moving colored blocks into goals placed around the outer edges of the court. They were competing in a game called BotBall which has to be one of the most fun looking extracurricular activities I have ever seen. Where the hell was I in middle school when all this was going on? Or was it? I have no idea but I feel like I somehow missed out.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="400" caption="Another variation of Botball"][/caption]

Shortly afterward while I was on my way out I saw a young girl wearing this shirt. It made me smile.

So I finally decided to try out Vampire Weekend's debut self titled album after weeks of buzz both from word of mouth and across the blogospere. I finally caved when I saw them on Uncrate.

Sound wise they are partially orchestral (ala Polyphonic Spree), have vocals that resemble Kings of Leon-meets-The Fratellis and a hint of Foals in there too (possibly in the percussion department and frenetic guitar in the song A-Punk).

The problem with overhypeing something is that it often leads to its own detriment. An example of this in the film world was the new Indiana Jones movie, it wasn't the quintessential ending to the series that was being promised. It was good, at best it was as good as one of the originals but it wasn't anything amazing. I feel the same way about VW. Don't get me wrong, I like some of there stuff, but I was expecting the next Apes & Androids or something based on the buzz. The thing about Apes & Androids is that they weren't nearly as hyped in the beginning, possibly do to their very "distinct" sound and bizarre performances at gigs in NYC. A&A's rise seemed more gradual and natural as opposed to VW which felt more forced. Leading to my conclusion of them having an image bigger than their sound, they seem... empty or like they are missing something.

But that's not to say the band is bad. Not at all, I see a lot of potential. My favorite tracks from the album are Mansard Roof and M79. The first has a very interesting and fun beat. Seeming almost carribe in percussion at parts but then using more classic instruments throughout. M79 then has a surprising intro as the band uses a harpsichord and violins/violas. Again the use of these classical instruments in a new way is giving this band a distinct flavor that look forward to hearing more of in the future.

I'd like to know what you guys think. Am I being too hard on them or is there weight to my argument? Please leave a comment with you thoughts and possibly other examples of overhype.

The Chicago Manual of Style, Strunk and White, and the Publication Manual of the APA all endorse manditory usage of the serial comma. Despite Vampire Weekend's ambivalence, I still like this song titled, "Oxford Comma," from their eponymous debut album. I also like "A-Punk."

A vite oublier donc.

Ca me fait tripper.

Vampire Weekend

They’ve got a big bandwagon right now but it’s a good one to be on. I first heard these guys a couple months ago by my friend's recommendation (thanks Chris) and since then they have exploded. From the first note on the album you can really tell you're about to hear something unique. (expect anything else from a foursome of Columbia grads?) Their music resembles an early Police in how they mix such an array of eclectic styles into a very well bundled package. (The police effectively mixed quintessential 70's rock with a strong reggae mix, while Vampire blends South African afro-pop with trendy Brooklyn indie rock.) I don't dare say they are the new Police... just comparing sounds. Check out the track, "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" to really hear the South African influence.

Highlights on the album for me are "M79", "A-Punk", and "One (Blake's Got a New Face)"... maybe just because they use my name. If you are in Atlanta, these guys will be at the Variety Playhouse on June 11th, hope to see some of you there.

A-Punk on Letterman

Yeasayer

These guys are quite a gem to find, i have to give a big thanks to Rob for the recommendation. Yeasayer is an extremely eclectic sound coming out of Brooklyn with their 2007 debut release, "All Hour Cymbals. " They mix a nice blend of middle eastern ethnic sounds, jam band hippie rock grooves, and Ibiza-style chill electronic backbeats.

I don't think the foursome could have picked a better opening song than "Sunrise" for the album. From the first notes you immediately escape to a middle eastern dawn and you can almost feel the warmth from the sun as it grows over the horizon. Another notable track, and the most popular, is "2080".

For me, the album slightly dies off as you progress through the track list. I can't tell if its because a lack of variety in later tracks or if I'm just not letting myself listen to the entire cd. Regardless, I keep going back to the cd. The sound is so new and unique, its hard for me to get to a point where I'm not excited about listening to the cd after a constant week of player rotation.

2080

Bon Iver

Bon Iver, a solo music project from Justin Vernon, is an amazing piece of work. The back story from this website says much more than a simple review:

"Tailing from the swirling breakup of his long time band, he escaped to the property and surrounded himself with simple work, quiet, and space. He lived there along for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This special time slowly beegan feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus..."

As you can imagine the result is an amazing debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago". A very unique sound with colors resembling Damien Rice and Jack Johnson were they to go sit in a cabin for three months and reinvent themselves. Essentially, Bon Iver is the perfect rainy day music, yet amazingly beautiful.

Be sure to check out "Skinny Love" and "Flume".

Flume

There’s a great scene in the movie ‘Donnie Brasco’ when Donnie is asked by his FBI

There's a great scene in the movie 'Donnie Brasco' when Donnie is asked by his FBI colleagues what 'forget about it' means, as it's a phrase he keeps hearing when he is listening in to Mob conversations. He replies "Forget about it" is like if you agree with someone, you know, like "Raquel Welsh is one great piece of ass forget about it." But then, if you disagree, like "A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it!" you know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like Mingrio's Peppers, "forget about it." But it's also like saying "Go to hell!" too. Like, you know, like "Hey Paulie, you got a one inch pecker?" and Paulie says "Forget about it!" Sometimes it just means forget about it. "

In Glasgow, we have our own equivalent phrase, the quintesentially Scottish 'it's not bad.' It can mean something is great - 'what do you think of The Beatles?' 'They're not bad.' It can mean terrible - 'how do I look honey?' 'Not bad love.' It can, basically, mean anything you want it to mean.

Why am I telling you this? Well, Vampire Weekend live are the gamut of 'not bad'. It's a sold out, Bank Holiday crowd in for their poly-rhythmic, jerking pop. It's a short set, more through necessity than anything else - even adding two new songs into the set and playing most of their debut album, they struggle to break 50 minutes. The set is fine - tight, energetic and bright. The problem is that it's clear that Vampire Weekend have missed a key part of their live apprenticeship. They have gone from support act to headlining 2,000 capacity venues, and some of the songs in this setting sound stillborn. There are a lot of tracks which simply sound like carbon copies of their recorded brothers. Again, this isn't the band's fault, it's just that the songs simply haven't had a chance to establish their own live personas.

'A-Punk' is typically wonderful, and 'Oxford Comma' is a fitting ending, getting even the most sullen white boy dancing. Overall, it's hard to complain about a gig costing a tenner, and delivered by such a nice bunch of boys (you fundamentally would not have to lock up your daughters when they were around. Your maths textbooks, maybe.) They certainly come across as likeable, even if they annoy this writer by not playing his favourite (the awesome 'The Kids Don't Stand A Chance' - grrrr!) It's absolutely clear that they have so much vitality, so many ideas and they look set to be a band who will deliver album after album of top notch music.

In the end, Vampire Weekend are not bad. But in this case, it's the literal meaning.

I was watching a music video show the other week (I won't name names, I is too ashamed), and they showed the latest video from Jared Leto's band Thirty Seconds to Mars, and my gosh, they certainly didn't spare any expense. It looked like a really expensive clip. And I found myself thinking ... was it really worth it? I don't know if it made the song any greater. I suppose the most interesting part was straight after this song they played a clip by Vampire Weekend called A-Punk. They obviously haven't spent a great deal of money, looks like one set, one shot, just some costume changes etc, but it is fantastic. I absolutely love it. This clip just makes me smile.

If you watch the above, watch the drummers they are hilarious!

Believe the hype! Vampire Weekend are good! I "picked up their debut download" this weekend and I'm quite impressed! Their music is very catchy, upbeat and they're not afraid to drop f-bombs when needed. Standouts so far include A-Punk, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, M79 and Wolcott.

I’m sorry gang, but this just won’t do. The next big thing has been served up again hot

I'm sorry gang, but this just won't do. The next big thing has been served up again hot on the tracks of about 10 other next big things and the emperor's new clothes have never looked more like a sagging, nude, middle-aged record company bigwig.

Have a listen to the above and see what you think. See if what happened to me happens to you.

Where are you in the song? Just past the intro and a few seconds in? When it started, it was alright, wasn't it? Sort of like The Strokes doing something in a weird time-signature. The guitar was nicely trebly and erratic - the bassist doing weird things as well, playing a counter-melody rather than thudding out a dirge.

But then the vocals went and kicked in and you realised what was going on. You realised that some fucking record company is trying to flog you a hybrid of the aforementioned Strokes and fucking STING.

I'm not buying it. I'm not illegally downloading it, come to that. This is The Police of the noughties and the horrific vocals combined with the preppy American college garb combines to create a gruesome mixture of curdling influences.

Set your watches for a couple of months' time when hopefully these great white hopes will have sunk without taste or trace.
