I watched a few movies recently that I want to tell you about.

Today I went to see Babylon, A.D. with BF. The commercials were completely awesome, making it look like Blade Runner with explosions and Vin Diesel. It was not. It was quite bad, incredibly disappointing. It's actually not even worth much more discussion here - that bad. I thought the first 2/3 of the movie was pretty okay, or at least watchable, but after the Big City Scene it became incomprehensible. Also, the action scenes were SO poorly done, they were just exasperating. Vin Diesel AND Michelle Yeoh kicking ass in the future dystopia, and the camera seemed like it was attached to an insect buzzing around the fights, recording nothing of use.

Last night we watched Fracture. I thought it was pretty average for the first half or so, sort of slow going, but Gosling's character arc was so gentle and effective, and the scenes between him and Hopkins were so compelling, that it turned into a real nail-biter after all. Tacked-on love parts notwithstanding. Note: Rosamund Pike is very beautiful.

On Friday I watched Moulin Rouge...from 1952. It's a movie about the artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, and the movie was depressing, very poorly organized, and acted with a strange, plywood-like indifference by its star (who was the very talented Jose Ferrer). There were some interesting moments in the first 10 minutes, some slam-bang editing that surprisingly reminded me of the other Moulin Rouge!, but I chalk this up to the Technicolor that was clearly part of the point of the movie.

This morning I woke up early to go to class at 9:00, but I had forgotten that the community college is on Labor Day break. On my class schedule it denotes that this class begins on 9/5. (I know that's a Friday, not a Saturday, but that's what the schedule says.) This left me some time for homework etc. (Conclusion: LOPT is going to be a gigantic waste of time.) BF and I ate an early lunch and went to the movies, and then I came home and went out to the garage yet again.

Today's lesson from the garage was that I can't save everything from uselessness, and hence from the garbage can (rather than the donation box). This is sort of a subtle lesson for me, and one that sort of clanged into place with all the other retraining of emotional muscles that I'm doing by trying to ditch my packrat habits. I cleaned out some of the boxes that Dad shipped to me (I didn't have the courage to go back to the box full of papers that I need to winnow out), and almost everything in them went in the trash or the giveaway box. I was rooting around in the first box and I came across the cordless phone that I used from high school into college. I had put stickers all over it - foot-shaped stickers, cute little frog stickers, and a Mount Holyoke sticker that I remember getting as a part of some stationery. I was about to throw it into the giveaway box automatically, because I was sure it still worked and had some use in it, but I realized that no one, not at the Salvation Army or a flea market, would buy a ten-year-old cordless phone with worn stickers all over it. I felt terrible, because the phone was still technically useful, but I realized that it didn't have any value. This is not a distinction that I'm very good at perceiving...at least not until today. So I threw it away. I threw away puzzles from my childhood that I remember doing many times, because the boxes were misshapen and I had no idea if they still had all their pieces. I threw away all the sheet music I had saved from middle school band class - I'm not altogether sure why I saved it all, but from the way it was stored, I saved it deliberately. Four bags of garbage today, as well as a massive box of clothes and a large box of stuff to give away.

I found baffling things in my work today. The first thing was a bright green acrylic clown wig, which I am utterly at a loss to recognize or understand. My parents could not ever have had occasion to own such a thing, and I have no idea how it found its way into the box. I found it inside out, like a Popple. The next thing was large, cut-up strips of gray car carpet upholstery. I'm sure it must have been part of a project of my father's, but I can't think why on earth he would have saved such a thing, especially in a box with all my old toys and puzzles. Finally I found a smallish Christmas tree stand - again in with my toys and puzzles - which I have no use for at all, and I put it in the giveaway box. I came and showed all these things to BF when I found them, and after the car upholstery, he said, "Next I expect you to come in with, like, a stuffed deer head." I half expected it myself.

I found many velvet boxes with opal jewelry in them. My birthstone is opal, and my estranged grandmother sent me opal jewelry most years for my birthday. I appreciated the gestures, and I do like opal quite a lot, but most of the jewelry is gold and I don't wear gold jewelry. I think I'm going to put it on eBay in a lot. I don't know at all how much it's worth and frankly I don't really care.

BF has been playing Army of Two most of the day. It looks to this bystander like a surprisingly cool military shooter with some interesting mechanics, although listening to it from upstairs is dull: rat-tat-tat, obscene male groans, rat-tat-tat. I thought the name was terribly silly when I first heard it: "No, see, it's like, the Army? Their tagline is 'Army of One' so it's like that, except...you know...there's two of them, so it's Army of Two." Laaame. But it turns out that while they are lamely riffing on that, the central gimmick of the game is about these two soldiers working as a team taking out half of the planet's Arab-speaking population. So they're like a whole army, but they're just these two guys. Duuuuude. Deep.

If you are a new reader, welcome! I post entries pretty much every day, or twice a day, as you see. I hope this doesn't make it too hard on you. If I only had less to say...we would probably all be happier.

If you liked Gears of War, check out Army of Two.
It’s basically Gears without the scifi angle

If you liked Gears of War, check out Army of Two.

It's basically Gears without the scifi angle, but the gameplay is exactly the same.

The only addition is the "AGGROMETER". How distracted the bad guys are from the other player. If you shoot at them (miss, hit, or HEADSHOT) the badguys start paying attention to you. There's some crazy bullettime maneuver that works entirely like Max Pain - whoever activates OVERKILL either goes crazy with bullettime and shooting while the other guy remains invisible.

The only gripe I have it that I constantly try to slide into cover only to have my guy climb over whatever I'm trying to hide behind. Unlike gears, there's no separate button for melee attacks, and ammo seems scarcer. It's not uncommon to exhaust your primary and be low on your secondary before finding either a place to stock up or killing someone who has some ammo left that works in your weapon. Unlike gears, you can't grab weapons off the ground, but you wouldn't want to.

Army of Two has the ammo shop you'll either love or hate, which lets you buy weapons and upgrade. Primaries are all assault rifles or squad automatic weapons. Secondaries are all sub machine guns or pistols. Special weapons are fun - they're sniper rifles or miniguns or other stupidity like an RPG. Upgrades are barrels, clip size, whatever but it's mostly cosmetic representations of damage, accuracy, recoil, clip size, and arrgo (how much attention it attracts to use that weapon). Upgrades can be exclusive - the G36 with the pistol grip improves accuracy and recoil, but the shotgun will hurt accuracy and recoil while improving the damage greatly. Basically, figure out how you want to play the game and upgrade from there. It feels like it's going to make a tactical difference but really the 50 cal sniper rifle does the same damage as the fully upgraded G36 but it zooms in much further. Buy something which suits your play style and work from there - there's no surprises. Weapons which dish out damage can be upgraded to dish out more damage, but they don't get much more accurate. Weapons which are accurate can be made more accurate. Weapons which are well rounded do everything decently without being stellar at any one thing. The only extra factor is "aggro", which "pimped" upgrades (think: golden AK47). But again, if the G36 does 80% of the damage of the 50 cal fully upgraded, there's no reason to buy the 50 - just shoot everyone twice.

This is where the game falls flat - you can't buy ammo. You start with a full primary, generic grenades and secondary and that's it. They don't fill the special weapon unless you're on a mission that needs it (parachute insertion). This is intentional since there's plenty of situations someone hanging back and sniping would work swimmingly well while the other guy collects the aggro. If you said "that's how I beat Gears of War!" you're right. They don't let you do that however. The emphasis is on keeping the game and you and your teammate close together. This is also where ass-to-ass mode comes in, it's basically double bullet time where you and your buddy do twice the damage in slow motion at the risk of someone tossing a grenade or blowing themselves up and killing you both. Later missions this becomes vogue, if you don't kill the explosives guys you end up getting knocked out of ass-to-ass mode.

The last deviation from Gears is the addition of the GPS. This is what pissed me off about Gears - it was pretty easy to get turned around since all the indoor stuff looked generic. Army fixes this by having a GPS with a path on it you can activate and it also has locations of observed traps and such. It still suffers from Gears "rail shooter" feel sometimes but the areas feel bigger which makes it a bit less hokey. Exploration is encouraged in the form of extra objectives and briefcases filled with money people leave laying around. Unlike gears, you can't just leave your buddies to go exploring and "get around to" reviving them. Your buddies will eventually bleed out or get executed if left on their own (a lot like Gears online). Unlike Gears, downed buddies can shoot (not well) and you can drag them while shooting. The shooting-while-down leads to Blackhawk Down-esque moments but it's really only good at bringing down people right on top of your position trying to execute you. Otherwise you end up simply drawing fire to an already bad position. This does occasionally lend itself to some unintentionally hilarious moments. Since grenades are "true" (they hurt everyone in the radius, friend or foe), there's been times I've run behind the "bosses" (guys wearing superior body armor which don't take damage from the front) only to catch a grenade tossed by the cannon-fodder which severely damaged the boss while also knocking my player down. With the "shoot while down" addition, this makes it a good strategy to suicide-squeeze the boss and then empty the clip into him from the back once he turns towards your buddy. Since most of the levels end shortly after killing the boss (or when you kill him), you go down and all your aggro is transferred to your buddy - just in time for you to kill the boss and end the level before you bleed out.

At first glance Army of Two is a little buggy, but I believe there was a great game under all the bugs. The most glaring bug is the text. Depending on what TV you’re playing on, the text could be completely illegible. I found myself squinting at the screen and trying to decipher what objective updated and never having the slightest clue what the squiggly lines where trying to tell me.

The game tutorials would pop up over the screen during gameplay or pause gameplay entirely in the middle of a firefight. Try aiming when all you can see is a tutorial pop-up that you can’t even read. Then there were the debates with my partner about what button the illegible tutorials were referring. Does is say R2 or L2? What’s that dot it’s referring to?

I was drawn to the game due to the co-op based combat and I wasn’t disappointed. The game uses aggro based combat to switch the enemies’ focus to one player or the other. The game promotes a sense of cooperation and co-dependence on the other player, so don’t even try playing it with the broken AI partner. Sometimes the game will over-use this mechanic, like having a bunch of doors that require two buttons to be pressed simultaneously to open. If you’re going to play this game, find yourself a buddy to join you.

The story mode is done considerably well. Most of the actual story is told though voice-over during gameplay and short cinematics. The levels seem to flow together and you’re never taken out of combat for too long. It’s a continuous stream of action and violence in a rather linear path.

Overall, this is a game definitely worth renting. When all is said and done it’s a fun game. The story mode is only about 7 hours of gameplay, so take a day to sit down and beat it.

Army of Two Split-Screen Co-Op Review

ONLY the offline split-screen Co-Op portion of the game is being reviewed here...

Liked:

1. Overall fun co-op third person shooter action. If you're into split-screen co-op with a buddy, this game is definitely worth buying.

2. I liked buying and customizing guns, and some guns look REALLY badass when they are pimped.

3. Achievements like "Kill 250 enemies with Assault Rifles", etc, are good incentives to play through using all the different types of weapons.

4. Good length for the campaign, especially since you'll probably want to play through on each difficulty level.

5. The interactions between Salem and Rios can be pretty fun.

Disliked:

1. The enemy AI is simply superhuman when it comes to accuracy, even on the lowest difficulty. An enemy blind-firing from behind cover, half the map away will nail you literally the instant you pop your head orbody out of cover. Luckily you can take a shitload of hits before you die. Superhuman accuracy tends to be a trend in shooters these days.

2. Sometimes you end up fighting with the controls more than the enemy. Maybe the most frustrating thing can be when you're fighting in close-quarters. Get too close to an enemy, and you'll often find you won't be able to shoot at him. It can get to the point where you want to hurl your controller sometimes.

3. Probably all of the co-op specific mechanics feel too contrived. Co-op sniping always has certain situations where the enemy is unaware of you with their backs turned. There are enemies which you basically can't kill unless your team-mate fills his aggro meter and you sneak around to shoot the baddie in the ass. Some doors require you each to push a button on either side of the door. Who's ever seen a door in real life like that? What it comes down to, is that it never really feels like you're working together, it feels more like you are jumping through hoops the programmers laid out to show off their "Co-Op stuff". The best uses of Co-Op are probably the dragging and healing, and the step jumps.

Yay: The fact that you can play split-screen offline co-op in the age of internet only fragfests is a definite bonus. It's even better that it's mostly pretty fun. +1

Final BS Rating: +3 HARDCORE

Closing Statement:

If you like Co-Op shooters, Army of Two is pretty much a must have. Since there's not a whole lot of offline co-op shooters out there, Army of Two is a no-brainer. Buy it or rent it, and have fun. Just remember to leave your brain behind before you get into the campaign's story.

Hey guys! Just checking in to let you know what's coming to the PLAYSTATION Store this wee... oh, hello? Is anyone there? Well, if any of you are not playing Metal Gear Solid 4 today and for some reason you're looking for other content, I'm here to let you know what we'll most likely see today on the PSN. I will keep this post updated (like I did last week) as new information pours in.

I have a hunch we'll see a PSone classic this week - which would be nice if true since so many have been clamoring for more on the PlayStation.Blog (and Japan received 6 more this week). The Army of Two free map pack was delayed 2 weeks ago in the US and it's reasonable to think we'll get it this week. As for the Konami "surprise" - I think it will be in addition to a PS3 theme. But honestly, I wouldn't expect a whole database of content, considering they just released an awesome exclusive PS3 game - what more can you ask for? Here's the full list:

Note:EU PSN received a Monster Madness: Grave Danger [demo]* and a Quake Wars: Enemy Territory [demo] today. I'm not sure when we'll see these in North America (it may be today for all I know), but at least next week we will get Fatal Inertia EX [full game & demo] and an NCAA 09 [demo] from EA Sports.

According to 2K Games, we will be getting a demo of Civilization Revolution this Thursday on the PLAYSTATION Store. Hopefully this doesn't turn out like the NASCAR 09 demo from last week where EA Sports announced it was coming out but didn't check with Sony first!

Either way, this Thursday is shaping up to be pretty great. In addition to the first ever episode of Qore (presented by PSN, but not a "paid subscription by Sony" as so many other gaming blogs falsely reported), the Civilization Revolution demo should join demos for Battlefield: Bad Company and NASCAR 09. We might even see a demo/full download for Fatal Intertia EX. (Update 1: Plus NOVASTRIKE) (Update 2: and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3!)

Add on top of that the confirmed 6 Rock Band songs, a possible Army of Two FREE map pack, and the Guitar Hero III cross-promotional God of War song (Update 3: + Motorhead Track Pack), and you have quite a week shaping up!

Remember, this content is always subject to change (there's definitely more content we haven't heard about yet and some of the content could always be pushed back).

I recently went along to an Xbox 360 LAN party with some of my friends. We brought along a few Xbox

I recently went along to an Xbox 360 LAN party with some of my friends. We brought along a few Xbox 360 consoles, controllers and games and even some headsets. The plan was to hook a few Xbox consoles up to a few tv's around the house and to play some system link multiplayer games.

Setting up the equipment was pretty straightforward; it was setting up the games which actually proved a difficult task.

Army of Two

The first game we decided to play in multiplayer was Army of Two. After going through the menu's on the game and reading the instruction manual, we discovered that this game has no system link option! In order to play each other, we had to connect to the internet, host a private online match over Xbox live and have the other team – only a few precious metres away – join the private match. It was also irritating that, because it was over the internet, we had to piggyback off someone else's gamertag. Considering Army of Two is such a co-op themed game, you'd have thought that the developers would make it as easy as possible to do have system link setups!

Gears of War

Gears of War was refreshingly fun to play for a title which is approaching 2 years old. The graphics still look incredible, and the tactical cover dynamic still hasn't really been bettered by any of the more recent Xbox 360 games. As a party game, like Army of Two, there's only a maximum of 2 people per console so after a few games on rotation we decided to get everyone involved in another game famous for its multiplayer...

Halo 3

I'd never realised how flexible Halo 3 truly was until this event. At this time of night our group had petered out to just 5 people, and we had 2 people on one Xbox and 3 people on the other console. After Gears and Army of Two this was something short of a revelation to have so many people playing at one given time. I'd also never realised how much fun could be had by watching the saved replays of our matches as we provided running commentary while viewing our performances of team deathmatch on high ground.

Call of Duty 4

And then there was the grand finale, Call of Duty 4. This is currently the favourite Xbox live multiplayer game of choice, and we were really anticipating some system link action. COD4 split screen is fun enough by itself, but the whole idea of having teams in different rooms battle it out like we'd just did with Halo nearly made us salivate. But to our horror, we discovered that COD4 has possibly the most gimped system link ever seen – it will only let 1 person play per console. The frustrating thing is that we know a single Xbox 360 can handle 4 people split screen. This was a huge disappointment, and slightly reluctantly we went back to some 3 v 2 Halo 3 matches.

The Final Word...

System link games when they're done right can really make for some of the most fun console experiences. I find the best type of system link experiences are ones that combine traditional split screen multiplayer and the modern multiplayer climate of squad based FPS's: your room vs another room. Its the way you can talk to someone else without using a ridiculous headset; the way you can even see someone else's screen on your team to help co-ordinate your attacks and strategies and knowing somewhere in your network, there's a bunch of people doing exactly the same thing. For me, thats the type of social gaming best suited to the Xbox and its available games. As it stands right now, it would seem that video games developers couldn't care less for this setup.

Anyone who has ever heard “A Humarock Song” knows of singer-songwriter Greg Cherone

Anyone who has ever heard "A Humarock Song" knows of singer-songwriter Greg Cherone's affinity for Scituate, Massachusetts. So, it was no surprise when the "Songs of Scituate" CD arrived. This time the vocalist takes us a little ways north of the Humarock peninsula to one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States - Scituate Light. There is a bit of time travel involved too as the listener is transported to the year 1814. "Army of Two" retells the fascinating story of how the two young daughters of the lighthouse keeper, armed with only a fife and drum, prevent the British from sacking the town. "Their bravery really does inspire." Cherone says. "The challenge was translating it into a song."
"Old Oaken Bucket" is a contemporary version of Samuel Woodworth's famous poem that in 1935 was voted official song of Scituate by the town council. Now a whole new audience can experience this home-spun simple pleasure of a cool drink of water on a summer's day. "The song has a lot of substance." Cherone insists. "For me anyway, the bucket is a symbol. The name of the town derives from 'satuit,' the Wampanoag term which means 'cold brook,' the source of the water the poet is celebrating."
What also makes this CD so unique is how it is being utilized as a vehicle to raise funds. All profit from sales are donated to the Scituate Historical Society, the non-profit organization who are sponsoring the release. Their mission to promote the study of local history and preserve the antiquities and those municipalities that were anciently a part of the town has found new life in the form of popular song. Reasonably priced at $5 each, we can all feel good about spreading the word.

Army of Two is een serieuze aanrader!

En uppföljare till Army of Two lär säkerligen bli aktuell efter försäljningsframgångarna, men vad blir titeln – Army of Two 2 (two)?

Nossa como o ano tá correndo. Mal tenho tempo pra postar no Guri, o pouco que tá sobrando to usando pra jogar.. hahahahaha.

Os jogos são Gears of War, Army of Two e The Simpsons Game.

Yeah, Don recently purchased a PlayStation3, and I was around to actually catch a glimpse of it at his crib yesterday.

To top it all off, the monster of a PS3 is paired up with a 44-inch (I think) LG TV; a potent gaming combo if I have ever seen one.

Mun Wei and Don are currently playing a cool shooter game called Army of Two.

Basically, they just blow things up and kill as many enemies as possible.

And the best thing about Army of Two is the whole pimping the weapons section. MTV should totally produce PIMP MY GUNS ASIA!

Standard to Pimped. Gold-plated and Diamond-studded ammo anyone?

Don has a selection of pretty popular titles of which I do not play at all since the game that is permanently stuck in my run-off-the-mill PS2 is Pro Evolution Winning Eleven.

And what was I doing while those two were violently taking the lives of fellow men in roaring laughter? Well, let's just say I have the final laugh in an OSIM massaging chair.

Army of Two, commonly abbreviated as Ao2, is a video game developed by Electronic Arts, released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 4, 2008 in North America. Army of Two is a third person shooter game focusing on the fictional story of two private military contractors (characterized as mercenaries) "fight[ing] through war, political turmoil, and a conspiracy so vast it threatens the entire world" in a timeline spanning from 1993 to 2009.

Focusing on cooperative strategies, Army of Two's highlighting feature is the necessity to use coordinated teamwork to accomplish the game's goals. While the game is meant to be played with another human as your partner, a "Partner Artificial Intelligence"(PAI) is also included and programmed to follow the player's strategies in suit. Dependence on your partner (whether human or PAI) is so pronounced that certain objectives may be impossible to complete without it.

The story begins in 1993 in Somalia when Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios (the protagonists of the game) are still in the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment. They are tasked to work with Philip Clyde, a private military contractor with the Security and Strategy Corporation (SSC), to carry out an assassination. After this mission, Philip Clyde, on behalf of SSC CEO Ernest Stockwell, invites Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dalton (commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment) to join the company for a desk job. He agrees, asking to bring Salem and Rios with him as contractors, and in the following year, the three enter the private sector. Salem and Rios begin mercenary work, and start mercenary work. Over the course of a decade and a half, they are caught up in a complex scheme to privatize the military, and see to the plot's downfall. At the game's epilogue, we see the two protagonists start their own firm.

Empezare con mi review para Army of Two, luego tocare un tema un tanto inesperado.

Army of Two

Ahora, veamos la realidad de Army of Two.

Jugabilidad:
