I attended, and hosted, the first BarCamp in Tampa Bay this weekend. When I first read about BarCamp

I attended, and hosted, the first BarCamp in Tampa Bay this weekend. When I first read about BarCamp, I knew it was something I wanted to be associated with, and now that it's over I'm really glad I was.

BarCamp is a different kind of event – one where open participation is encouraged and networking occurs in its rawest, most natural form. Although plenty of work went into the behind-the-scenes planning, it’s very much an ad-hoc gathering that was created from the desire for people to share and learn from one another. There are no keynote speakers, or even a pre-determined speaker lineup. The schedule is set the morning of the event based on what participants want to present and talk about, and what follows are intense discussions, demos and lots and lots of meaningful interaction. It's exactly the kind of thing Tampa Bay needs in order to create a vibrant, more livable community.

The event went really well, especially for a first one. Attendance was a little lower than expected, and I'm not really sure why. Maybe people were not familiar with the concept. The people who did attend were extremely happy and seemed to get a lot out of it. The team of behind the scene coordinators was great to work with.

The first day, which focused on technical development, was a little over my head, but I learned a lot from new media day. I attended sessions like "How to Make Love to Your Customer" by Saul Colt of Freshbooks and "Insider's Guide to New Media" by Brenda Young of Marbay Group.

Some nuggets:

Never sell anything on Twitter. Always make it about other people. Freshbooks does some interesting things with Twitter to show the love to their customers.

Use the same picture on all of your social media sites to build recognition.

New media is not just another avenue to broadcast the same message.

50% of conversations about your company are taking place outside of your control.

A new concept called "coworking" is emerging, where people who freelance or work from home get together at coffee shops and such to socialize, do work and share ideas.

Web sites I'm going to check out:

twitter.com/tweetanswers - ask questions and get answers on Twitter

tweepletwak.com - track who stops following you on Twitter

kenradio.com - demographics for social media sites

www.twitclicks.com - track clicks for your Twitter feed. This is a new program created by local BarCamper Kyle Graham.

google.com/cse - create a custom search engine

snackr - easily track newsfeeds

codiris - plugin for pictures that allows you to scroll images in 3D

Barcamp is an event organized by the Barcampers at Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Apologies if I missed on some of the places. This was my second attendance to Barcamp. One was @Amity Business School, Nodia. Logically speaking, there remains a lot of thing which we miss on a day to day basis even if you tend to be in stream with the technology or any kind of information. Be it over the web or in person.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="271" caption="Barcamp"][/caption]

Barcamp is one such event where you can meet the real good informative people :). Information comes from sharing and you cant get the better place than this.

Today I attended BCD5, the Barcamp event in IIT-Delhi. Although registrations for this event were many online. However, only a few turned up for the event actually. Quiet a few people were carrying laptops and PDAs to blog in real time about the event using wifi which in general IIT - Delhi auditoriums have for use by everybody but today there was'nt any due to security reasons.

Among others, I also spoke on new business models in wireless space, representing CellStrat. Though the attendees for this topic were very very less with a total of about just 10-15 peoplefrom close to 100+ . But it was appreciated quiet a lot as these were the only people who were either working in mobile space on these models for their clients abroad or would like to include them in their businesses in India.

Overall, the technology presentations or the one in tech space were quiet good.

Vortrag

Mehrsprachige Seiten machen. MUTTERSPRACHLER! (sonst Schrott)

An Agenturen gehen.

A first person view on the New Delhi Barcamp 2008. Yeah, i know this isn't the only blog and i get that you are probably the second and last person who ever sees this blog post. But, what the heck, let it just be yet another one of them!

9th October:
Here i am trying to register for this event, on the wiki, and it turns out i am the 355th person with an entry in this wiki! The reason why i was not able to register earlier is a long and complicated one, and i will try to make it short for you. "I did not know!". Well, now that that is settled, i will be with my laptop at the event and be posting live.

10th October:
Turns out some wise guy has deleted my entry in the wiki. So, i had to re-enter my details.

The notion of losing my virginity of anything to a bunch of self professed geeks is pretty horrifyin

The notion of losing my virginity of anything to a bunch of self professed geeks is pretty horrifying, but terminology aside I just wanted to try and articulate a brief explaination of what a Barcamp is and why anyone should want to attend.

I didn't know what to expect from BarCamp London 5, but given that i'd agreed to help out with BarCamp Sheffield 2, I thought it my duty to go and find out.

After signing in, we go through the introductions, each taking turns to describe ourselves in 3 tags. This public shaming exercise acts as a great icebreaker.

We will be plotting a number of embarrassing means of breaking the ice at BarCamp Sheffield.

After a discussion with the guys at ebay I decided from the many things I wanted to talk about, to do a talk on demand = supply, which I haven't even blogged about yet (more on this to follow later).

I approached "the scheduling board" with trepidation at first - It was a grid with times on one side and rooms on the other. I wasn't immediately sure what to do, although write your talk on a post it and stick it where and when you want to speak appeared to be the order of the day, I noticed that Moo were the only people speaking at 1.00 (the first slot). After checking that I wouldn't be making a faux pas, I decided to go head to head with the well known firm.

I found the system easy to use, and the distributed nature of choosing a speaking slot made it easy to post.

My talk on supply = demand went well, with a room fit to bursting and I didn't see anyone sneaking out, which I held to be a good sign. People counld interject and ask questions mid flow, which made it feel informal and free, and enabled me to elabourate where neccessary.

The rest of the weekend was rich in conversation and discussion, highlights included:

How Architects use buildings to control us - A look at Las Vegas is especially terrifying

How to make your own touch screen for £10 (which led into a how to make your own projector, amoungst other DIY projects)

An explaination of the Credit Crunch (and how the economy works) - Terrifying knowledge that makes you go What The Fuck

An assessment of virtual media centres - Boxee looking sweet

Some interesting discussions on economics of morality and facilitating change through social enterprise with EcoCamp and UK carrot mob founders.

So all in all a great time was had by all. I didn't play werewolf role play (from what I could gather a more complex version of Wink Murder), into the evening, I had to draw the line somewhere. It looked like fun, but I just wasn't willing to embrace my inner geek to that degree.

Many thanks to the guys at Ebay (i hope you weather the storm), and all the attendees who made the event such fun.

This is to get the conversation going, both here and there (at BarCamp Sheffield), so join in and join us. Oh and help us design the logo.

Dalle stelle alle stalle? Second Life è morto?

Second Life è morto?

scrivendo a info (at) slcamp.info
telefonando a Fabrizio Pivari 328 2480334

As Andry and I walked up the stairs to the room where the barcamp was held, we had noticed a note on

As Andry and I walked up the stairs to the room where the barcamp was held, we had noticed a note on a white board on "what you should do at a barcamp". Before reaching the main door I could already hear someone taking the floor, I stretched my ears and got them wide open, then I heard something like web2.0 (and puppy linux ;) ). Oh my God, I got to see that presentation I said to myself. We entered the room but there were no more seats, it was full. No time to idle, Jogany asked me to record an excerpt of each presentation. I put on my FOKO t-shirt :p and tried to spot enough room for me and my bag close to the speaker.

A lot of people attended the barcamp and most of them were … bloggers. This was an opportunity for me to see some of them that I only knew by pictures through blogs like avylavitra, DotMg or Jentilisa - who talked about the Global Voices Online and released a book containing what he’s been writing as a blogger since 2006. Crazy!! It must be a 200 page book! I also met old friends that I started to miss, right Fy (eboons.net) ;) , Ndria from e-saina (when will we play bball again man, you seem to have put on weights ahhhh nahazo takolaka lol) and how can I forget mister VoIP himself, Iantra (connectic), I’m so sorry bro I couldn’t attend your speech. Ah, yeah I was about to forget, the foko blogger’s from Tamatave, Mahajanga and Antsirabe were there as well, a part from the ones that I already met during the foko workshops I could recognize among them Diana and Patrick.
I couldn’t talked much though, I was most of the time behind my camera juggling with recording and shooting pictures (as what all the FBC’s members were doing when they were not live blogging), trying to have the best of my 256mb memory card. Ain’t easy.

I paid much more attention to Haja’s presentation on “Why Madagascar hasn’t got yet its IXP?” Ok, so this guy is a real geek. He’s the administrator of the .mg domaine, a member of AMUL and also works for Orchid Systems. He raised a serous issue that should be put an eye on. To simplify and not to enter into details, an IXP is a connection point of two or several ISPs. This way, if two people living in Madagascar sending each other emails won’t be obliged to use satellite anymore. That means, the connection won’t go out side Madagascar if it is between local users. Not only can this idea help us save hundreds of millions of dollars but also improves the speed rate of the local connection. His part took more than the granted 5 minutes – yeah the attendance wanted more and was totally curious about it. Pakysse was obliged to intervene and suggested to discuss it in the afternoon.
The 2 hours passed so fast, the time I realized my memory card was full it was almost 1:30. I had to leave L. I loaded all the photos and videos I had on foko’s laptops.

My impressions
The mood and atmosphere struck me the most. It was warm, relaxed and fun. Just like between old friends and family members – nothing really formal. Plus you are tagged with your name once you enter the room so that anybody can know you. That eased exchanges a lot, raised undiscussed issues that may concern everybody and helps new ideas and concepts to see the light.

[caption id="attachment_375" align="alignleft" width="180" caption="Barcamp 4., 5. Oktober Wien"][/caption]

GO EAST - Internet Industry in Eastern Europe

How conservative companys deal with Web 2.0

etc.
