"...there has been cautious hope that the Panama Canal would serve as a natural barrier to slow or even stop the spread of Chytrid to eastern Panama, a particularly species-rich region that had so far avoided the decimation seen in western Panama and Costa Rica. Now an international team of researchers report that Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been detected in three species east of the Panama Canal at Soberanía National Park. Although the scientists note that the results are preliminary and more work needs to be done to determine the origin and incidence of the Chytridiomycosis in Soberanía, the finding is bad news for Panama's amphibians.

"The scientists say that physical barriers to the spread of Chytrid — including salt water, deforested lowlands where high temperatures kill the fungus, and the Panama Canal — are being "easily overcome" in Panama by "human movement of the pathogen". In other words, human activities like tourism, scientific research, and construction are facilitating the epidemic. The authors suggest that measures to reduce transportation of Chytrid such as 'bleaching boots and cleaning field gear between sites, and providing information at eco-lodges' could help contain the disease."

A Banda Desenhada é uma arte mais antiga do que o cinema mas não conseguiu até hoje um reconhecimento global semelhante ao deste.

Tirando algumas excepções, como no Japão onde a sua divulgação é massificada mas é também uma leitura descartável, ou em França e na Bélgica onde anda a par com as outras formas de expressão artística, não fosse uma aparição ou outra nos media, quase sempre por associação a um filme, e a fidelização dos seus leitores, quase se podia dizer que a BD, como entidade própria, não existe.

A data “oficial” do seu nascimento é 1896. Foi em Fevereiro desse ano que “Yellow Kid”, publicado no jornal “New York World”, surgiu pela primeira vez com as características que passaram a definir uma BD tal como a conhecemos hoje: narração sequencial através de uma sucessão de quadros (ou quadrinhos); existência de uma personagem principal que se vai mantendo ao longo de uma série; texto inserido em balões que simbolizam a fala ou os pensamentos dos intervenientes da história.

Talvez porque durante muitas décadas esteve associada a temas um pouco infantis e humorísticos (daí o nome “comics” nos países de língua inglesa), os seus leitores são essencialmente crianças e jovens. E quando estes chegam a uma idade mais adulta param de lê-la, se calhar por quererem algo que vá para além dos Tio Patinhas e Super-Homens a que estavam habituados e não encontram alternativas com facilidade..

O objectivo deste blog é incentivar e (re)despertar o gosto pela leitura de BD naqueles que já o fizeram e entretanto desistiram, e também naqueles que nunca a levaram a sério para que vejam que boas histórias e narrativas existem sob várias formas, não tendo de haver uma escolha entre umas e outras. E ainda, claro, falar para os já convertidos apresentando-lhes e sugerindo-lhes algumas escolhas pessoais que talvez lhes tenham passado ao lado.

Se, por um lado, a BD não é um fenómeno de massas, por outro, quantidade e diversidade de obras não lhe faltam. Em papel há milhares de edições onde escolher (não estamos a falar de Portugal, obviamente) e online também não faltam opções.

Slim & G spent time with their father on Wednesday.  BD and i had a nice conversation.  we talked about marriage, job, money, kids, us (!) and what surprised me the most that after 13 years but mainly the years we were fuckin around he apologized for.  he says he thinks about it constantly and how he treated me playback in his head like a movie.  he said that i deserved better and that he was truely sorry for how he treated me.  honestly i don't remember specifically what he did cause either i really didn't trip off him or it hurt that bad that i put it out of my head... most likely the latter.  i mean how do you really get past hurtful issues unless you forget about them?  i mean he brought up specifics that i have long forgotten.  all i could do is smile and say its cool.  i'm wondering if he apologized so he could have closure and forget that shit or if he really meant it.  oh well i got over it a while back so thats on him.  that nigga hugged me 3 times that night.  everytime he was about to leave he hugged me then started talking again!  i was cold and tired but ironically enough i didn't want him to leave either. before ya'll be like WTF... let me just say it wasn't like that.  no butterflies, no wet panties, nothing like that!!! *background check* as much as i have expressed my hatred for him... i never really hated him i just missed some parts of our previous relationship.  before he and i hooked up we were really good friends that let sex come between us.  i mean we could talk about anything and did.  then one day he kissed me... and pretty much went to shit after that.  he had a girlfriend and i had a boyfriend.  but we were drawn to each other like a moth to a flame.  we couldn't leave each other alone.  we broke up with our SO before we ever did anything.    but he eventually went back to his girlfriend because she had a car and he needed a car.  at the time i didn't understand that cause i didn't know about his past... yeah i guess he wasn't telling me everything!!  but thats cool cause i had my secrets too.   so i was the other woman.  i hated it.  but i wanted him.  he would leave her to spend the night with me.  the funny thing about it is that she lived 1 floor up 1 door down from me.  and supposedly she never knew he was kickin it with me...  but i think she did.  and i couldn't stand her as from the day i met her before i even knew BD.  she was the only light skinned heffa on campus till i brought my ass up there.  and she saw me as competition and always treated me like she had the finest thing walking on campus and that he would never look at me.  well i showed her didn't i!!!  just playing.  i must admit it was fun and dangerous(cause that bitch was crazy) and exciting.  and it turned us both on to be sneaking around.  she had friends right down the hall from me.  she had sorority sisters across the hall from me and working in the office.  we never got caught and we never got in trouble.   it was fun.  anyway he was talking to me about how he is with his wife (she just seems unhappy period)  and i asked him where the hell was he 10 years ago?  cause this person he is painting for me that he claims to be now would have been the perfect boyfriend for me.  i could have dealt with him and stayed with him.  and have had a life with this man... that he is today.  kind of pissed me off...  you know that "what if" factor.  thats what brought on all the apologizes and reminiscing.   i'm just wondering how often does he think of us.  i know there were times he would call me and ask me to met him in Fayette (where we went to school) for a night of pleasure... this was after i got married.  he would email me to tell me he had a dream about me.  damn i had forgot all this shit.  cause honestly i don't think about him like that.  i barely think anything of him.  HA i had always thought that i never impacted anyones life to have them think of me now and wonder what might have been...  thats funny.  i always think of my ex Bobby cause thats who i was with before i hooked up with BD.  plus i knew he loved me and he knew i loved him... can't say that for BD.  he considered what we did dating.. i don't, i consider it fucking around.  he never told me he loved me and i never told him.  we have 2 children though.  what does that say?  we were young and stupid for not using protection.. or just stopping altogether?  or did we really mean more to each other than i allow myself to believe?  well all i know is that when we called it all off after it was said and done... i missed my friend more than anything... matter of fact that was the only thing i missed.  could care less about the sex, "dating", or whatever.  i just wanted my friend back.  he still can make me laugh and damn well might as well say it... still fine as hell... that picture does not do him justice!  i got a taste of that old friendship Wednesday night...  i still miss it. :(  we have more in common now than we did then.  sucks that i know hubby won't allow us to have a friendship or i would pursue it.  still might.  he even helped me realize some things as far as our children go that i brought up to hubby and he had no clue...  i've been in denial about this and i am woman enough to admit it... i need him more that i thought in my life as well as in his children life.

oh well... he lives to far to dwell on it.  i just have to let it be.  and not think about it.  ok got that out.  thats all i wanted.

Anyways, I guess I had better snap back to reality.

So I have been reading all these ttc blogs and getting teary-eyed, so I decided to start my own. If I can help anyone on their own ttc journey by telling my story, then so be it! At least then all the heartache won't have been for nothing, huh?

So to start off, my name is Amber. I am a wife to a wonderful man, who just so happens to be my best friend. We have 12 beautiful little "angels". Sadly, eleven of them reside in heaven. Yep, I'm the wierd chick that you hear horror stories about at the gyno's office.... you know.... the "poor lady who had had too many losses to count and should just give up and adopt, yada yada yada"

My one living child is a beautiful little boy named Nathaniel, which literally means "gift from God". His smile makes all the pain and heartache worth it.

So to give a quick rundown of my "diagnoses" (or lack therof)....

• I have PCOS
• I had a uterine sarcoma (malignant tumor) removed 3 years ago
• I have an incompetent cervix
• I have a pituitary tumor, which totally wacks out my hormones.
• I have a progesterone deficiancy (So I supplement with Prochieve)
• I have excess prolactin (So I take Parlodel)
• I have an "irritable uterus", I go into premature labor ridiculously easy.
• And the most recent "diagnoses", is that I have a clotting disorder. So I will begin taking Lovenox as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed.

As for our losses, here is the lowdown. It's rather depressing typing out all the details, so I will keep it brief. But please don't interpret this as "not caring". I don't think there is anyway to describe the pain my husband and i have experienced.

• 1st loss- Technically not a true "miscarriage", but the pain is still felt to this day. Dh's girlfriend had a late term abortion without his knowledge. She informed us years later. Even though this child was conceived with another woman, I still feel the deep pain of his loss and often wonder what it would be like to have a 6 year old running about.
• 2nd loss- 18 weeks, Jamie Elizabeth.  Had a tumor develop in her abdominal cavity which ultimately cause her death.
• 3rd loss- miscarriage at 7wks, undiagnosed reasons
• 4th loss- miscarriage at 9 wks, yet again undiagnosed
• 5th loss- Twin girls at 19wks 5days. They shared the same sack. Cause was determined to be a placental abruption.
• 6th pregnancy- My miracle baby Nathaniel, who is alive and well! Praise God!!!!!!!!!! 
• 7th pregnancy- miscarriage at 6wks, unknown reason
• 8th pregnancy- ectopic pregnancy, both tubes were salvaged
• 9th pregnancy- miscarriage at 5 wks
• 10th pregnancy- miscarriage at 6 wks
• 11th pregnancy- miscarriage at 6 wks, but was not diagnosed until 8 wks. Tried to miscarry naturally as I always have. (Never had needed a d&c before this point) Developed massive infection, and had emergency d&c at what would have been 12 weeks gestation.

As of now, it has been 3 cycles since our last heartbreaking loss. And just for the record, we have attempted adoption. We were supposed to be getting a little girl, she was due in the middle of this month. We had started getting ready for her arrival, only to be heartbroken when her drug addicted parents decided to keep her. It was one of the hardest things I've ever experienced, knowing that this poor baby is doomed to a life of neglect and hardship. Anyways, that's my experience with the adopion process. Not too pretty, eh?

Once again, we are trying for another child "au naturale". I am currently on cycle day 17 after my first ever round of Clomid. (Talk about some evil side effects, pain anyone?)

Poor DH and I have bd'ed our little hearts out. This will be our first even time to try the Lovenox, as I was just diagnosed with the clotting disorder. We are cautiously optimistic (considering our history, any optimism is a remarkable feat) Nothing like a new treatment to give hope, though.

So currently, I am 2 dpo, and waiting to see is this Clomid stuff is going to do it's job.

PLEASE SEND THE BABYDUST!!!!!!!!!!!! This is going to be one long 2 week wait!

(Or however long I can hold out on testing, lol!) Thank God for Dollar tree tests!

Somebody please sound the alarm and get the frogs into the lifeboats. (More on that in a second.) The discovery that the chytrid fungus has hopped the Panama Canal is the equivalent of a stock market crash for amphibians, and it should strike fear in the heart of every conservationist. Central and South America are home to the planet's critical mass of ampihbian species.

I'll be writing about the discovery more in future posts, but for now, go to the scientists' report in EcoHealth here.

Scientists have feared for some time that the canal would not hold back the spread of chytrid, which clogs amphibians' delicate skin and basically chokes them to death because they breath through their miraculous skin. This disease, which is indigenous to southern Africa, was accidentally spread around the world in the mid 1900s. The African clawed frog, also indigenous to southern Africa, is immune to the disease and when the medical world discovered the species could be used as a pregnancy test -- details here -- it was shipped around the world, carrying the disease with it. Chytrid is fatal to 80 percent of amphibian species and has vanquished more than 100 species over the past 20 years.

Which brings us to Amphibian Ark, the organization I support that is in charge of the plan to avert the mass extinction of amphibian species. Studies predict that up to half of the 6,000 amphibian species will go extinct in our lifetime unless emergency measures are taken. It's not just chytrid killing them off, but also habitat loss, pollution, and global warming. Amphibian Ark organizes zoos and conservation organizations to pluck the most endangered species from the wild, before they vanish, and put them into the "protective custody" of biosecure containers (or "lifeboats") for breeding. Once the species are brought back to a critical mass population, they can be reintroduced into the wild.

It costs $100,000 to do the work and build the facilities to save one amphibian species. It's a bargain.

I don't think I've written such a "dramatic" post in this blog, but folks, if there was ever a time to get fired up and take action, this is the moment. The Panama Canal jump is a major breach.

“A Armadilha Diabólica”

O cientista Miloch, inventor de uma máquina que controlava as condições atmosféricas ("SOS Meteoros"), nomeia Mortimer como seu herdeiro universal. Esquecendo toda a prudência e ignorando os avisos do seu amigo Blake, o heróis toma contacto com o Cronóscafo, uma máquina de viajar no tempo concebida por Miloch. Como o herói irá aprender à sua própria custa, o engenho encerra uma armadilha para o fazer desaparecer. Para conseguir voltar ao seu tempo, o herói confronta-se com animais pré-históricos, enfrenta uma sublevação camponesa na Idade Média e debate-se com um tirano cruel que escravizou a humanidade num tempo futuro pós-apocalíptico.

A primeira vez que tomei contacto com esta banda desenhada, foi em casa de um vizinho meu para onde eu costumava ir brincar. Transcrevo «As primeiras brincadeiras foram feitas na casa de um vizinho do prédio do lado. Ele tinha sempre grandes novidades em brinquedos e por isso, era bastante apreciado. Tinha montes de Legos que davam para construir tudo e mais alguma coisa, tinha ActionMen, tinha pistas da Matchbox, tinha pistas de corridas de automóveis e até foi o primeiro a ter um Spectrum, resumindo, era bastante apreciado» de “Eu brincava assim…”.

O pai desse meu amigo era um grande apreciador de banda desenhada, e ao longo dos anos, tinha coleccionado as edições da revista Tintin. Cada publicação continha vários títulos da BD, em particular, o ‘Blake & Mortimer’. Se não estou em erro, a colecção era constituída por uns dez calhamaços, que agrupavam várias revistas de publicação mensal, creio. De início, talvez tenham achado que eu ainda não tinha idade para ter acesso a tão grande tesouro, por isso, apenas me era permitido dar uma olhadela ao seu conteúdo, na presença do dono da casa. Só muito mais tarde é que obtive a tão desejada autorização para levar um calhamaço de cada vez para minha casa. Foi a loucura. Eu não me cansava de ler e reler aquelas aventuras.

A luta de uns resistentes contra um ditador impiedoso? Qual a diferença entre “O Segredo do Espadão” e a primeira trilogia da Guerra das Estrelas? Os Açores a esconderem a civilização da Atlântida? Um herói a viajar no tempo? Quantos filmes foram feitos com base nesta história?

Edgard Félix Pierre Jacobs, mais conhecido por Edgar P. Jacobs, além de ser um brilhante desenhador e argumentista, foi também um visionário para a sua época.

O primeiro número da revista Tintin foi lançado em 26 de Setembro de 1946. Esse número incluía “O Segredo do Espadão”, o qual apresentava os personagens do Capitão Francis Blake, dos Serviços Secretos Ingleses, o seu amigo, o Professor Philip Mortimer, um Físico brilhante, e o arqui-inimigo deles, o Coronel Olrik. A trilogia do ‘Espadão’ terminou em 1949, mas Olric, Blake e Mortimer continuaram a sua luta através das restantes histórias da colecção.

Após a morte de Jacobs em 1987, Bob de Moor completou a sua última história que estava inacabada. No meio da década de 90 a série continuou com dois grupos de escritores e artistas Van Hamme/Benoit e Sente/Juillard.

Apesar de a série ser ‘Blake & Mortimer’, é o professor Mortimer que acaba por ser o protagonista principal. É ele que, por causa do seu carácter impulsivo, se envolve nas aventuras. O Capitão Blake é o homem correcto, o oficial do exército, de ar sério, que acaba sempre por ir em socorro de Mortimer. Já o Coronel Olrik combina características dos outros dois heróis.

Blake e Mortimer são mostrados por diversas vezes a viver na mesma casa, partilhando um apartamento da mesma forma como faziam Sherlock Holmes e Doctor Watson, ou outros heróis da BD, como Tintin e o Capitão Haddock, ou Spirou e Fantasio.

Jacobs sempre desenhou as histórias com um ar contemporâneo, por isso, as primeiras tinham um ar dos anos 50, enquanto as últimas já apresentavam um design típico dos anos 70. No período pós-Jacobs, as histórias voltam a ter um design localizado nos anos 50.

Algumas aventuras terminam com os personagens a reflectirem no que aprenderam nas suas experiências. Na aventura em que Mortimer viaja no tempo, este conclui que em vez de sonhar com os bons velhos tempos, ou olhar para um futuro promissor, o melhor era mesmo dar valor ao presente.

Estes súbditos de Sua Majestade nunca tiveram direito à Sétima Arte. Espanta-me que com tanta adaptação que é feita de livros de BD, nunca ninguém se tenha lembrado de transportar estas aventuras para o grande ecrã. O enredo destas histórias de certeza que garantia uma produção que seria um enorme êxito de bilheteira.

Steven Spielberg está a filmar o Tintin, com data de lançamento para 2009. Agora que Spielberg abandonou a Paramount e ao anunciou o seu objectivo de fundar um novo estúdio em sociedade com o grupo indiano de telecomunicações Reliance ADA, espero que mantenha este tipo de ideias e se lembre de colocar o ‘Blake & Mortimer’ no cinema (só espero é que não ganhe tiques de Bollywood).

E actualmente, quanto olho para os desenhos do ‘Blake & Mortimer’, tenho a certeza de duas coisas, o papel do Professor Philip Mortimer seria entregue ao Russell Crowe, enquanto o papel do Capitão Francis Blake iria para o Leonardo DiCaprio (Ok, tenho algumas dúvidas quanto a esta escolha). Será esta foto um prenúncio dessa dupla?

Passados mais de vinte anos sobre a última vez que li uma história das aventuras de ‘Blake & Mortimer’, dou agora início à minha colecção desta BD de excelência. Já não me lembro de muitas das histórias. Por isso, uma vez mais, tenho a certeza que vou ler e reler estas aventuras com o mesmo prazer com que as li em calhamaços emprestados pelo vizinho.

Já tinha estado tentado a comprar estes livros na Bertrand, porém, achei que a edição não apresentava a devida qualidade. Agora, agradeço ao Público por ter lançado uma edição de luxo, com capa dura, lombada forrada a tecido e gravada a dourado.
