Work was good for once; I was in charge and I enjoy being the one who gets to issue the orders for a change. I enjoy responsibility, and I love being busy. Being able to be the one to make all of the decisions today has cheered me up for some reason!

I ate healthily today too. I worked a long shift (9 hours - quite tiring when you only get chance for a ten minute break) and also ran up and down stairs about a million times. So my mood has lifted. I feel clearer about everything.

We're meant to be going out for a meal after work tomorrow night. I'm not sure that I can be bothered really, but I don't think I can get out of it. I suppose I'll enjoy it once I'm there, but I always have this tendency to want to stay home when I know something like this is coming up. It wouldn't be so bad if we were going out to a restaurant, but C&M are cooking for us in their new house and I really just cannot be bothered to go! I can be so antisocial sometimes...!

Saturday night is giving me concern too. We're going to RX's house. After all the arguments he's having with NS, I'm feeling caught in the middle, and my refusal to pick sides hasn't gone down too well. I FUCKING HATE how all this crap happens every now and again. I find it difficult to deal with his moods - I know I should understand that his illness makes him unable to react to situations the same way that I might (as if I'm sane! Ha!) but sometimes it is hard to remember that. It's hard to think, "It's ok that he said that, it's just the way he is" because he wouldn't make an allowance for someone's personality, so should we make one for his condition? Well - everyone else does, so I guess I have to. Doesn't mean I want to though, because it seems like double standards.

Anyway... Blah fucking blah. I'm sick of the whole stupid situation. I'm really noticing who my friends are recently.

Big came in to work today. He hugged me so tight. I love how easily he just picks me up in to his arms every time I see him. He kissed me, righ there on the shop floor in front of all the customers! I had to kiss him back, I can't control myself around him. He gave me a necklace and some gorgeous lingerie... I refused to take them over and over, but he kept refusing to take them back. He looked so hurt that I wouldn't take them that I ended up accepting them. And truth is, I love them. I am slightly confused as to how he knows my underwear size, but I'm not complaining...! He has asked me to go visit him soon. If I can get some time off work I will do. I need to explore these feelings a little bit more, and see if there is any future for me and him. If there isn't, then I will have to stop seeing him forever. I can't handle being around him. It's difficult.

If there does seem to be a future, then I guess I need to make a clean break. It would be hard to leave my family and friends, and there are some friends that I would miss more than anything. But I guess we would still see each other as often as possible. I would miss HE so much. He has become more than a friend to me recently, and although I have backed off slightly in fear of my feelings, I would be devastated to lose him.

Argh... I have no guilt over what we did. Indeed, I wish it had gone further. I'm not sure it could do now, even though I want it to. I spend a lot of time trying to think of ways we could see each other, but it is difficult with me working such long shifts at the moment. I am also slightly afraid of being alone with him. I don't know what I'll do...

Frustrated isn't the word...

About 6-7 years ago, I was in a philosophy class at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (good science/engineering school) and the teaching assistant was explaining Descartes. He was trying to show how things don't always happen the way we think they will and explained that, while a pen always falls when you drop it on Earth, it would just float away if you let go of it on the Moon.

My jaw dropped a little. I blurted "What?!" Looking around the room, I saw that only my friend Mark and one other student looked confused by the TA's statement. The other 17 people just looked at me like "What's your problem?"

"But a pen would fall if you dropped it on the Moon, just more slowly." I protested. "No it wouldn't." the TA explained calmly, "because you're too far away from the Earth's gravity."

Think. Think. Aha! "You saw the APOLLO astronauts walking around on the Moon, didn't you?" I countered, "why didn't they float away?" "Because they were wearing heavy boots." he responded, as if this made perfect sense (remember, this is a Philosophy TA who's had plenty of logic classes).

By then I realized that we were each living in totally different worlds, and did not speak each others language, so I gave up. As we left the room, my friend Mark was raging. "My God! How can all those people be so stupid?"

I tried to be understanding. "Mark, they knew this stuff at one time, but it's not part of their basic view of the world, so they've forgotten it. Most people could probably make the same mistake." To prove my point, we went back to our dorm room and began randomly selecting names from the campus phone book. We called about 30 people and asked each this question:

1. If you're standing on the Moon holding a pen, and you let go, will it a) float away, b) float where it is, or c) fall to the ground? About 47 percent got this question correct. Of the ones who got it wrong, we asked the obvious follow-up question:

2. You've seen films of the APOLLO astronauts walking around on the Moon, why didn't they fall off?

About 20 percent of the people changed their answer to the first question when they heard this one! But the most amazing part was that about half of them confidently answered, "Because they were wearing heavy boots."

Mihai Petrovici, a terminat recent 20% din totalul modulelor de detectori ale unui subansamblu de detecţie al aranjamentului experimental ALICE. La acest proiect din cadrul CERN participă 1.000 de specialişti din 29 de ţări şi 86 institute de cercetare.

„Un experiment nu se face din plictiseală, nici din prea mulţi bani. Sunt întrebări la care vrem să găsim un răspuns cu toţii: materia întunecată, originea masei. Ce se va întâmpla la CERN e singurul fel prin care putem crea, la nivel de laborator, fenomenul care se presupune că a avut loc chiar în primele momente ale expansiunii Universului, cunoscut şi ca Big Bang“, spune Andrei Herghelegiu, care-şi pregăteşte masterul la centrul de la Măgurele.

Echipa este formată din 15 oameni. Un detector cere 7-10 zile pentru realizarea şi testarea completă. „Fiecare etapă are nevoie de timp pentru condiţii optime. Expediem în jur de 20 de module într-un transport datorită condiţiilor speciale de temperatură şi de ambalare impuse. Înainte însă fiecare detector se testează. Rezultatele fiecăruia sunt păstrate într-o bază de date, care va fi folosită în următorii 15 ani, cât se va desfăşura acest experiment“, adaugă Mariana Petriş, doctor în fizică şi cercetător la Măgurele.

La subsol, informaţiile din activitatea de laborator sunt păstrate în format electronic. Într-un zgomot infernal, făcut de procesoarele a peste 100 de servere de calcul, Cristian Andrei, student, ca şi Andrei Herghelegiu, explică pentru Cotidianul importanţa acestora în cercetarea fizicienilor: „Aici a fost realizată prima aplicaţie de GRID internaţional din România. La ora actuală peste 5 milioane de fişiere se salvează la noi, iar stocarea lor ajunge la 48 de Terrabytes“. „Fiecare particulă are o istorie, rezultată în urma datelor pe care le obţii despre ea, în experimente. La CERN, simularea unui eveniment, de exemplu, durează opt ore“, adaugă acesta. Până la sfârşitul anului, centrul de date coordonat de fizicianul Claudiu Schiaua va avea în jur de 300 de procesoare şi va livra aproximativ 5% din puterea de calcul şi stocare a GRID-ului internaţional asociat experimentului ALICE.
