So, if you like to write/blog, then you'll probably find this really helpful. I'm inconsistent as all get out when it comes to writing/blogging, usually because I can't think of enough interesting content that would actually be worth reading. Check this sucka'.

Seriously, I don't know how you folks do it. This is the first time in awhile I have updated this thing. I'd love to know how you all do it...

Anyway, I've started reading through the book of James--if I'm not mistaken, LifeConnection Church will be doing a teaching series over it in the not-so-distant future. As I started reading through the first chapter, I recalled a teaching I had heard from Darrin Patrick some time ago.

Darrin Patrick is the lead pastor for The Journey, a church in St. Louis. They did an entire teaching series through James, chapter by chapter, back in 2005. Fortunately, it is still accessible on their website. So, I thought I'd link to it so that you can go listen. Here is the first one. Enjoy!

I've noticed that over the past few months there has been an increase in the number of parenting blogs I read. What's up with that? I've never been fond of kids and I've never really had much desire to have my own (other than assuming I would because that is what society expects me to do). More recently in my relationship with my fiance I have been responding to people's comments about our future children by stating that we don't have any intention to procreate. Most people are taken aback when they hear this - I figure because a lot of people still hold the notion that marriage is only a union for procreating and cannot simply be a life-long companionship. I'm not against having children but it bothers me that people assume that I will have kids. Maybe I will, maybe I won't, but I still think I am way too young to be thinking about that now. And why are people so concerned with other people's lives anyway? If you like kids then have your own. Anyway, I wonder if this has influenced my increased readership to these blogs. Or perhaps I am slowly starting to like kids? I'm not sure, but I know that the thought of having children makes me want to puke.

My fiance and I just started to plan our wedding and by "just started" I mean that we just started yesterday. I started going through some bridal magazines that my mom's co-worker gave me and aside from my constant gagging at the Disney fairytale bullshit that is plastered throughout this waste of paper, it had ads to sites including a bridal show. So I decided to go online and see if there are any upcoming shows that I can attend to help me get through this horrid planning that we have to undergo. Can you tell that I'm not a fan of wedding planning? So I came across a site that listed past and upcoming bridal shows in the Toronto area. Great! One thing that makes me life more easier. So I looked through the list and found a link to the Kismet Bridal Show which exhibits vendors for South Asian weddings. Perfect! Or so I thought. Under their articles section they had an articled called South Asian Religions and Tradtions. They had a pretty extensive collection of sections, which I was pleased to see. What I was not too thrilled about was their Christian section. At first I was excited that they had included Christianity in their article since I've noticed that most people generally ignore Christianity or Christians in and from India. My excitement was washed away though by the stereotypical depiction of a Christian wedding as a white, European wedding. Maybe I'm just not worldly enough, but I seriously doubt that Indian Christians incorporate a horseshoe into their wedding ceremonies. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

I'm disappointed (yet again) at the level of ignorance by people who are supposed to be educating and informing non-South Asians and non-Indians about the diversity among South Asians. Why are Christians, once again, ignored and assumed to only be of European descent? There are so many Christian traditions that are non-European and non-North American. Why must non-European descent Christians continue to be pushed to the sidelines and have their cultures, traditions and heritage ignored not only by the mainstream Christian community in the West but also by institutions that are supposed to be unbiased and public sources of information? Are these forms of Christianity not seen as good enough or accurate? That is definitely how it makes me feel. Now I cannot speak for all non-European descent Christians, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not the only one that gets a little peeved at the level of ignorance in supposedly educated, liberal, progressive communities.

This week at LifeConnection we began a brand new teaching series titled OnePrayer. The idea was developed by LifeChurch in Oklahoma.

Basically, churches from around the world are joining together responding the the question, "If you could pray just one prayer to God, for the Church, what would it be?" Many are dong so via video, which enables churches to hear teaching from gifted communicators from all around the world. LifeConnection's prayer Sunday morning was, "Lord, make us risk-takers."

Being that it was Father's Day, the message was geared especially to the dudes. I won't go into great detail about the content of the message, I'll simply have you go listen to it here. It's not up just yet, but come back in a day or two and it should be ready to go.

Generally, we try enhance the musical worship by developing a song list that is consistent as possible with the teaching for the morning. Rather than bombard people with lots of different small ideas, we try to communicate one big idea. We took a little longer than usual settling down on the specific direction for the teaching when we were doing musical planning, so we were a bit less intentional with the consistency of that big idea this time around. Check out the set:

When I Think About the Lord: Shane and Shane
Forever: Chris Tomlin
Beautiful Jesus: Kristian Stanfill
How Great is Our God: Chris Tomlin
How Great Thou Art: LifeConnection style (who was the original composer?)

We were going to follow the teaching with How Great Thou Art, but Rev. Allen came up to us pre-service because he was concerned it was too pretty to follow a teaching that was going to challenge dudes to quit being so pretty. With that, we followed the teaching with Beautiful Jesus and How Great is Our God. In hindsight, it was a good move and actually very consistent.

One memorable statement from the morning: "We don't work up the courage to become risk-takers by mustering it up within ourselves. We become risk-takers by catching a fresh vision of God." With that, I can't think of two better songs to follow a teaching like that than these. It turned out to be an intense and challenging morning. I know my testosterone levels have increased significantly and I finally have chest hair. Till next time.

I've been doing some looking around on the net and checked out a site called onetruth.com. They are certainly a Christian group and make clothing with the intention of communicating a Christian world-view. Now, typically, I find Christian apparel to be a little bit on the lame side, but they've got some cool stuff.

And, when you check out the site, there is a tab that says "written stuff" that you should look at. There is one in particular titled Dedicated to the Good Girls that was really thoughtful and intense. So, if you're a lady and you happen to read this or a dude that spends time with ladies, then maybe you'll find it interesting and thought-provoking. That's all. Lata on.
