[caption id="attachment_781" align="alignnone" width="400" caption="Brown Fat Mitochondria or Modern Art?"][/caption]

Researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center have been researching ways to generate fat loss by stimulating brown fat production.

In a recent study (published in Nature), they have shown that a protein called BMP-7 can promote the development of brown fat.

This is good news.

While the white fat cells that cover our doughy North American bodies are seen as the bane of our collective overweight existence, their brown fat cousins are superstars at burning calories.

What?

Yep. You read that right. Fat that burns calories.

The primary function of brown fat is to generate body heat.

In contrast to white fat cells, which contain a single lipid (fat) droplet, brown adipocytes contain numerous smaller droplets and a much higher number of mitochondria.

But more importantly, the main role of brown fat is to burn calories by generating heat.

Sadly, brown fat cells largely disappear by adulthood in humans, but their precursors still remain in the body.

It is these brown fat precursors that the researchers were targeting.

[caption id="attachment_789" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Brown Fat Distribution Patterns - Adult / Baby"][/caption]

The Science

A 2005 Joslin study discovered genes that control the creation of the precursor cells of brown fat.

A 2007 Joslin study found clusters of brown fat cells dispersed between bundles of muscle fibers in an obesity-resistant strain of mice.

This latest study identified BMP-7 as the protein capable of causing the formation and activation of brown fat cells.

Knowing this, the researchers injected the mice with BMP-7.

Success!

According to the researchers, delivery of BMP-7 into mice using adenovirus as a vector resulted in an increase in the growth of brown fat.

In one of the experiments, the mice that developed brown fat tissue gained less weight than those that did not.

In another experiment, mice that received injections of progenitor cells, (similar to stem cells) that had been pre-treated with BMP-7 also developed additional brown fat tissue.

[caption id="attachment_792" align="alignnone" width="241" caption="The difference between Stem cells and Progenitor cells"][/caption]

So what does this all mean?

The researchers were trying to discover what controls the development of brown fat cells.

They already knew that BMPs are a group of proteins known to regulate the formation of a baby's organs during their embryonic development.

Their current research indicates that BMP-7 (and perhaps other BMPs) can control the fate of brown and white cells.

Brown and white fat cells.

Turn one on and the other off.

Turn on 'calorie burning' fat and turn off 'calorie storing' fat.

Now that is exciting.

Last week, headed over to Darussalam @ Subang Ss15 to meet up with the rest.. Unfortunately only 4 turn up... How sad.. Stayed around, lepak checked out the new branch of Sneakers which was indirectly opposite Darus. They have some good shoes on discount.. Dunk Low Manu is at about 40% but only size 10US and 11US only..

Nasi Lemak which was similar to the one at Sea Park. Sea Park's one is still much better!

Traded my Neon Colored Dunkesto to eman for Air Jordan 1 BMP (Old Love).. Weeeheee! Superr random..

Broke into these on Saturday... I guess I still need to get the angle right to snap pictures of "What you rocking today" with a 50mm lens.. I can do it with a wide and its boring.. Hahaha..

Headed to Digital Mall and spend a bit (refused to join the craze at PC fair).. Headed to Shah Alam and then to Subang for dinner.. And played Rayman Raving Rabbits on Wii for the whole night.. Hammering rabbit was fun! Hahahhaah...

How to convert wmv to bmp? See the list of converters wmv2bmp.

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a name for the set of video codec technologies developed by Microsoft.
WMV files use ASF container format. These files can be played by MPlayer or Windows Media Player.

The .wmv file extension usually describes ASF files using Windows Media Video codecs. The audio codec used with WMV is normally a version of WMA.

Besides ASF, WMV can be put into the AVI or MKV container formats as well.

Originally the WMV codec was designed for Internet streaming applications. Two other codecs - WMV Screen and WMV Image - are a screencast codec and a video slideshow codec respectively.

BMP (or DIB) is a
bitmapped graphics format used commonly as a simple graphics file format on the Microsoft Windows and OS/2 platforms.
In BMP files images are generally stored with a color depth from 2 (1-bit) to 16.7 million (24-bit) colors. 8-bit images instead of indexed color can be greyscale. Alpha channels may be stored in a separate files, similar to a greyscale image.

As BMP files are usually not compressed they are much larger than compressed image file formats for the same image.
Most BMP files compress very well with lossless data compression algorithms such as ZIP because they contain redundant data.

As a standard most image files have a header or marker segment that will allow you to determine the image type. You can always look at the file extension but it is not a reliable way to determine the image type, especially if the file extension has been changed. So, you have to read the image header to determine and verify the real image format. BMP, PCX, JPEG, FLI/FLC, and AVI files include headers that define the image size, number of colors, and other information needed to display the image. Here is the header information you need to look for to identify some of the more common image formats.

JPEG Header Format:

Strictly speaking, JPEG files do not have formal headers, but fg_jpeghead() and fgi_jpeghead() return relevant information from the file's start of frame segment. We call it a header for consistency with other image file formats. The first part to look at is the first two bytes of the file. The hex values FF D8 will identify the start of the image file. This is often enough to know that you have an actual JPEG file. The next two bytes are the Application marker typically FF E0. This marker can change depending on the application used to modify or save the image. I have seen this marker as FF E1 when pictures were created by Canon digital cameras. The next two bytes are skipped. Read the next five bytes to identify specifically the application marker. This would typically be 4A 46 49 46 (JFIF) and 00 to terminate the string. So, it is FF D8 FF E0 <skip two bytes> 4A 46 49 46 00

TIFF (Tag Image File Format):

The image header for a TIFF image is a fixed 8 byte segment always occurring at the beginning of the file. To ensure TIFF images can be read properly by PC's (Intel processors) and Macintosh computers the header must indicate a byte order which in this case is the first two bytes of the file. The first two bytes will either be hex 49 49 (II) for Intel format or 4D 4D (MM) for the Macintosh integer format which was based on Motorola processors. The next byte is 2A (decimal 42). This number should never change. The number 42 was used because of it's significant meaning in mathematics, religion, science, and other fields. Ignore the rest of the header. For our purpose of identifying the image format these bytes are all that we need to look at.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
A GIF file is a compressed image format. It uses lossless data compression which is also used in zip and gzip functions. Lossless data compression ensures that there is no data loss or image degradation. GIF files are largely used for animated images and in the early years of the internet you would be hard pressed to find a website not using some form of animated GIF file.

To identify the GIF file read the first three bytes of the file.

I have always been a big fan of Adobe Photoshop, the trendsetter/innovator for all photo editor and image manipulation software.

The downside for typical users though, (other than its price – which is formidable), is it's huge size on disk, it’s very challenging platform requirements, and an extreme learning curve which demands time and training.

Most of us don’t need the flexibility, or the power of a high end (read expensive), photo editor. Instead, we’re looking for an application that’s small, fast, and free with an intuitive interface that’s very easy to use; especially for those with only modest previous experience.

IrfanView which is one of my favorite photo applications (not just mine; there have been over 34 Million downloads), is not just an image viewer, but an image browser, converter, and an editor as well. Best of all, you’ll find the interface intuitive and very easy to use. If you’re curious, this application is named after its developer Irfan Skiljan.

With IrfanView you can fix and enhance digital photos including resizing, cropping, correcting red eye, flipping, and rotating. As well, you can perform a wide variety of image adjustments, including brightness, contrast, and applying special effects such as sharpen and blur.

I have been using this neat little program for years and with every new release it just keeps getting better. The latest version - version 4.20, released July 16, 2008, includes plug-in support for most image, video, and sound formats, including MP3, AVI, audio CD, and WMA. An added bonus in the latest version is you now have the ability to Draw, Erase, Fill, Rotate, and Draw an Arrow.

General Overview:
Project Dogwaffle is another fun replacement for paint. The version 1.2 is a freeware version of the original series. The paint-based program is impressive with its tools and functions. However, the turn off - native format. Hence, using this software to edit your favourite pictures becomes a chore. You will have to convert it using other programs like Irfanview. After all said, if you really want something that loads fast and provides paint functions that is somewhat like a Adobe Photoshop, this is still the software for you. It still has .bmp format to keep you happy.

FreewareAddict Rating: 7/10
It just lacks something.

Features:

Impressive drawing inventory

Tools like pastel, pencils, charcoal etc, very accessible!

Animation Functions

Some print screens of the animation making process.

Could not convert into a format to show everyone out here my masterpiece. XD
It is in .dwa, a troublesome format.

The bad point

The sad thing is that, you can only open bmp files.
Converting has to be done.

Closing comments:
Perhaps, they chose .bmp and created their own native format for some reasons. We are not sure, and maybe you can help us find out. Maybe, they did this to achieve faster systems. Other than that, a simple and worthy program to try out. If you are new to Adobe or other software, this program may be more simpler for you. If you want performance, why not try out the other programs feature here?

Supports : Windows XP, Windows Vista (Some bugs encountered on Vista)

The version we’ve tested is v1.2.

We have finally finished the AlphaConvert and BetaConvert Module of 36-image converter which provide

We have finally finished the AlphaConvert and BetaConvert Module of 36-image converter which provide 36IC 4.4 with the ability to convert to : jpeg, jpeg2000, tif, tiff (for mac), pcx, gif, ico, cur, raw-pii, pii, emf, wmf, png and jng. We are going to tune the default converter-engine to enable it to additionally convert to bmp, dib, tga, raw, pbm, ppm and pgm. This makes a total of 21 output filetypes +2 variants of Jpeg : jpeg (native) and jpeg (advanced). The difference between these is that jpeg advanced programatically supports higher compression and better color preservation.

Now the development of the main executable and the design part of project Ninja will begin. Tomorrow we are going to adjust the old batcher and add them to the main executable and starting Wednesday we are going to start designing the full interface later to also add it to the main executable. This will probably be our biggest obstacle as the interface will be a huge change and will make most of the weight of 36-image converter executable.

The new core will be based on the old one (CN:Lapiz) but will be new in some aspects so the new core is codenamed : "Azul". Azul will be more reliable and will have better support for big images.

With all our current development resources combined, 36-image converter 4.4 will be able to 100% successfully convert to : bmp, dib, jpg, jpeg2000, tga, raw, tif, pcx, ico, cur (yeah that's right, real windows cursors!), pbm, raw-pii, gif, emf, wmf, pgm and ppm. There will certainly be a way to convert to png as well, but we our still researching that along with mng, rle, iff, cal, ras, pic, psd, psp and our own encrypted filetype PHIX. This means that if we succeed, 36-image converter will be able to convert to 27 filetypes. To give you an idea that's 10 more than photoshop. The amount of input filetypes will remain basically the same, except that Ninja will support the native raw-pii and phix as well.

We have also made a few icons, we only have to choose the best one. We aren't going to put a real date on the release but you might expect 36-image converter 4.4 still this month.
