Courteney Cox admits she experimented with Botox and didn't like it.

‘Botox? I think it's fantastic and also horrible,’ she says.

‘I mean, they've come up with this stuff that can make you not look angry. But you have to use it sparingly.

'I went to this doctor once and he was like, “Oh, let me do it just here and here and here.” And I was miserable.’

Courteney, 44, has no plans to repeat the experience.

‘I mean, I'm an actor, I've got to be able to move my face,’ she tells Marie Claire. ...more

It was with great interest that I read the Medscape article, “Ancillary Services in Primary C

It was with great interest that I read the Medscape article, "Ancillary Services in Primary Care," posted today on Medscape Internal Medicine. The author, Leslie R. Kane (okay, I can't help it but I immediately thought arcane,) goes through several strategies to boost revenues. She investigates botox, dermal fillers, lab/lab draws, holter monitors, laser hair removal, and weight management clinic. After reading the article, I was struck by the thought, "Is this why I went to medical school, to remove hair and plump up crows feet?" Additionally, the weight management clinics use herbal remedies and prescription medications. Kane interviews an internist, Dr. Larry Maguire, and he states, ""I mainly do medication-focused weight loss, using the medicines that are currently available, plus some new ones." I query the use of prescription and OTC medications (remember fen-fen?) and wonder about the medical legal aspects of these programs.

I think there are two take away messages: 1) look before you leap! Carefully analyze each opportunity with respect to additional costs, cash flow (!) and revenues. Make sure you can afford to offer these procedures, knowing there may be a time lag before you see actual revenues. Be sure you develop a budget for marketing and a marketing plan as well. 2) Think carefully about why you practice medicine. If you are passionate about frown lines and unwanted hair, go for it! Otherwise, would your time be better served lobbying for better reimbursement and looking for ways to maximize efficiency?

Hmmm, I'm thinking of having a little work done, perhaps these frown smile lines....

Courtney Cox revealed in an interview with Marie Claire that she has tried Botox injections but hated it. She said "I'm an actor, i have to be able to move my face". This is in complete contrast to a previous post which discussed Sharon Stone's use of Botox (on her sons feet)!

[caption id="attachment_173" align="alignnone" width="290" caption="Cover of Marie Claire Magazine"][/caption]

I think it's great that Courtney could be honest about trying it and then telling the world that she wasn't too thrilled. the 44 year old actress, best known for her role as Monica on the sitcom Friends admits that she like the concept of what Botoxcan do but says "you have to use it sparingly".

She also adds that her husband, actor David Arquette "loves the aging process. He thinks it's beautiful". Way to go David...maybe more Hollywood hubbys will begin to follow in your footsteps!

[caption id="attachment_174" align="alignnone" width="292" caption="Courtney Cox with husband David Arquette"][/caption]

I'm not sure the whole anti-aging rage is really the best way to go for celebrities. 10 years from now, it will be VERY apparent who has opted for cosmetic assistance in the aging process and who has allowed their bodies to age naturally. I meant there is only so much you can do and then you're just bound to be old and in some cases these women (and men) will be old with faces that no longer move!

I also think that maybe if more celebrities start speaking out against it's use (or overuse) the whole trend of permanent youth may start to fade a little.

However Cox is not the first to be unimpressed with Botox; 51 year old,Terminator actress Linda Hamilton said in September of this year that she would not be partaking in the Hollywood fad.

[caption id="attachment_177" align="alignnone" width="214" caption="Anti-Botox Celebrity Linda Hamilton"][/caption]

So i guess we will just wait and see who wrinkles and who just ages with the grace that many celebrities have done in the past without the wonders of age defying injections.

You thought botox was all about looks? it's also a salve for everything from cerebral palsy to writer's cramp

By Sarah Baldauf

Posted Sunday, January 14, 2007

The neurological disorder that plagues Art Kessler arches his spine painfully backward and swivels his neck sideways. Every three months for the past four years, the 39-year-old private-equity manager from Chicago has gotten injections in his neck and along his spine that relax his tightened muscles and allow him to work, play with his young son, and "live a normal life. It's been huge for me in terms of keeping me mobile," Kessler says. The shots responsible? Botox.

In the past decade, since its war on wrinkles began, Botox has gained a massive following, from soccer moms to movie stars, who refuse to accept the evidence that they're getting on in years. Sales for cosmetic use of the drug, which causes temporary muscle paralysis and prevents the grimacing that leads to crow's feet and frown lines, were $357 million in 2005, according to Allergan, the drug's manufacturer. Meantime, sales for far-less-publicized therapeutic uses reached $473 million, as doctors have wielded it against everything from cerebral palsy to headache to Parkinson's disease and crossed eyes. "I don't know of a single treatment that has more applications," says Joseph Jankovic, director of the Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas and a pioneer in Botox research.

It was Jankovic's work that led the Food and Drug Administration to approve Botox back in 1989 as a treatment for blepharospasm, an eye-muscle disorder that causes abnormal blinking. Injecting the drug-diluted botulinum toxin, a poison-directly into an affected muscle inhibits the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from relaying messages from the brain, which relaxes the clenching and thereby eases pain. It's the overactive signaling from the brain that's common to the conditions the drug treats best. Botox paralyzes only at the site of the injection, but patients must endure needle jabs directly into the problem area-again and again, since the drug's effect wears off in a few months.

Off-label use. Besides brow-wrinkling and blepharospasm, Botox has been approved to treat crossed eyes, cervical dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions in the neck and shoulder), and-most recently-excessive underarm sweating. (Acetylcholine also stimulates sweat glands.) But the list of "off label" targets has been growing fast and now includes lower back pain, constipation, epilepsy, tennis elbow, and fibromyalgia, to name a few. Jankovic considers the injections to be quality-of-life-saving to a number of patients with disorders that cause uncontrollable movements, including Parkinson's disease, tremors, and Tourette's syndrome. (With research support from the drug companies, Jankovic has been studying the effectiveness of two competing drugs as well as Botox, in hopes of ultimately lowering the cost of treatment.)

"Without it, I would not be on the air," says National Public Radio talk show host Diane Rehm, who has spasmodic dysphonia. The condition clenches her vocal cords, causing her voice to quiver and crack. Shots into her vocal cords every four months have saved her career, she says. More than 50 clinical trials of botulinum toxin are currently underway, including Allergan-sponsored efforts to rack up FDA approvals for headache, overactive bladder, and spasticity caused by stroke.

There's a lot of experimentation going on," says Christine Cheng, assistant clinical professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California-San Francisco, who has studied the body of research on Botox's off-label uses. While there's mounting excitement about the drug's potential, Cheng thinks patients need to be cautious about off-label use, since its effectiveness and safety are yet to be proved in many cases. "Don't demand a certain treatment just because you saw a headline," she advises.

Possible side effects include headache, flulike symptoms, and greater-than-intended muscle weakness-causing a droopy eyelid after treatment for a blinking disorder, for example. Because Botox is not permanent, neither is the weakness, but the comeback can take weeks. No one knows what the effect might be of long-term use. And it's been observed that a small percentage of people develop antibodies to the Botox, making it less effective.

Botox offers "an alternative to drugs in difficult patients" when other therapies have failed, says Seymour Diamond, director of the inpatient headache unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago. He's conducting Allergan-funded research on the use of Botox for headache. "But I'd be reluctant about its generalized use until proven useful," he says.

Where the science is sound, some insurance plans will cover Botox treatments even without the blessing of the FDA. Injections for writer's cramp, certain gastrointestinal disorders, and spasticity caused by brain injury, multiple sclerosis, or hereditary paraplegia are sometimes covered, for example. Aetna and Cigna, among other insurers, say that they may cover other uses if a doctor deems Botox medically necessary. "Where there's inconsistent literature, we'd give case-by-case consideration," says Daniel Winn, a medical director at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield of greater Washington, D.C. So far, wrinkles don't clear the industry's bar.

Not a cure. Even when it works, Botox doesn't address the underlying condition. Kessler is now scheduled to get deep brain stimulation, a surgery that will implant electrodes in his brain to override the problematic signals caused by his condition, generalized dystonia; he hopes it will make the injections unnecessary. But sometimes just managing symptoms improves a patient's prognosis. In people with dystonias or spasticity, for example, Jankovic believes the drug can alter the disease's progression: Early treatments may head off the permanent contortions that can occur when muscles are contracted for a prolonged period and tendons shorten.

"I wanted to function," says Edward Rosa, 70, who started treatments after a stroke six years ago left him with clenched muscles on his left side. The retired Montville, N.J., businessman, who still does some consulting, says the therapy allowed him to exercise other muscles, improving his range of motion. At first, he went in four times a year for injections in his arm and leg. As he's progressed, the interval has lengthened; his last appointment was a year ago.

Because the delivery of the drug is localized and its effect wears off, some doctors like it as a possible alternative to more systemic and permanent treatments. Compared with drugs or surgery, "this is so minimally invasive," says Michael Chancellor, director of neurourology and female urology programs at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Chancellor uses Botox off label to relieve muscle spasms in the pelvic floor and to manage enlarged prostate. By relaxing muscle tissue that permeates the gland, he says, the drug seems to reduce pressure on other parts of the urinary tract. Chancellor, who has received research funding from Allergan, is now investigating the treatment for overactive bladder.

Ironically, Botox's power is derived from a substance that the federal government classifies as capable of inflicting mass casualties. While using it as a weapon would be extremely difficult technically, botulinum toxin is "the most poisonous substance known," says Zygmunt Dembek, a biochemist and epidemiologist at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. "And it has great potential for good."

O uso cosmético do BOTOX®

Tuesday 7th October 2008

We were amazed to read the other day at Sky News that Sharon Stone risked losing custody of her son partly because 'she wanted to inject his feet with botox to stop them smelling', or so reports suggest. God forbid a star should resort to the usual method of socks and foot spray!

What a bizarre thought! It seems to us that this is simply just another celebrity gone mad! Botox as everyone will know, is becoming more and more widely used, however as with any treatment, it should be used with caution. It can be very safe, if it’s done properly by well trained and intelligent medical staff who source their botox from highly reputable medical sources. However it has been known that some cowboy practitioners use botox of the veterinary quality, and has in the past caused quite drastic and unwanted effects in some patients.

I think we can all agree though, that Botox for your son's foot odour is slightly crazy!

Isn't it?

Mom always said that looks didn't matter, but that's not what consumers are saying with their pocketbooks. The aesthetic dermatology field — think Botox and collagen fillers — is booming. Merz Pharmaceuticals is planning to launch its own versions of a neurotoxin, like Botox, and a product that helps fill in facial wrinkles in the near future.

The move will continue to build the company's niche in medical and cosmetic dermatology. Merz, a privately held company that got its start in branded generics, already has a hit with Mederma, an over-the-counter product that helps reduce the appearance of scars. The company's move into the aesthetic dermatology realm comes as such procedures grow in popularity. There was a time when regular Janes and Joes didn't consider having cosmetic procedures done because they were considered frivolous.

People who had a little bit of money wanted to save it to get to the next level, buy a house, buy a car. People weren't spending money to make themselves look better. But times have changed. The public has more access to medical information, including ways to slow the aging process, and a desire to look as young as they feel. And now there are procedures available that don't require surgery, unlike nose jobs and face-lifts. People have also made the connection in the last 20 to 30 years that when you feel better about yourselves you are a little healthier. Part of feeling better about yourself is presenting your best face forward.

Consumers have flocked to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Botox treatments are up 13 percent from 2006 to 2007 and up 488 percent from 2000 to 2007, according to the society.

Founded in 2004, The Patients Advantage is fast becoming the largest matchmaker of board-certified cosmetic surgeons and their patients; having match over 5,000 people this year alone. The Patients Advantage is recognized as a leading information source on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Gyanendra used the Dashain festival to assure his subjects about his well-being, the progress he has made with his memoirs and also a quite successful Botox treatment to date. As a matter of fact he underwent, strictly according to Hindu scriptures, the trikaal treatment with Botox, Dysport, and Myobloc, to be precise.

OK, the neck section is probably in for some liposuction but otherwise darn good job. Gyanni looking very upbeat here, no surprise here: colon flushings work wonders and his subsequent bowel detoxification treatment dramatically lifted all readings to he upside.

His former Majesty also used his new spirits to avail himself of some nice pussy teaser necklace. Yeah, go fug it. Happy Dashain and inshallah.

Thanks for commenting Amy on my previous post regarding Botox and welcome to my blog. I'm not sure who you are but I welcome your thoughts and opinions. I agree whole-heartedly that women should put an emphasis on their physical beauty. In fact, having decided to participate in Mrs. Utah in April to promote Decency, I would definitely consider myself a student of physical beauty and how to improve my own appearance. I believe that how I am received physically not only has bearing on my own self-worth and level of confidence but also impacts my ability as a leader and to attract others to join in my non-profit work and to be interested in supporting and following the various causes I feel compelled to promote.

My current mentor, Cherie Burton, produced a CD entitled, Permission to Shine. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE. You can purchase it through her website at www.bluerosecommunications.com or feel free to borrow my copy. She promotes seeking beauty on a higher level than I have ever considered and is very spiritually based in her reasons as to why we should seek after it. If our intentions are to promote self or to have sex appeal for a broad audience, then we may be misguided and constantly fall short of our perceived societal expectations. If our motivations are spiritually based and we are able to exude radiance, confidence, light and charity in an effort to improve the world then hopefully our quest is not purely vanity. My current efforts to improve my beauty are focused on health, nutrition, weight training and an intense study of spirituality, soul purpose, personal mission and educating myself on hair, makeup and wardrobe. I have a LONG way to go!

I do believe that our society places an unhealthy emphasis on wordly beauty and I am especially concerned about the message it sends to younger women. A mature and spiritually refined woman can certainly use her wisdom and judgement to know if a certain procedure is the correct choice for her. I don't think that younger girls have developed that discernment and can easily be misguided into a "fixation with fixing"-to quote Cherie. We have to be very careful about how much physical fixing we seek after if any. I think it is better to focus on self acceptance rather than fixing. My heath and fitness mentor, Liz Rosenbaum, wrote a great blog post on self acceptance.

I admit I've been tempted to take a little off my nose and add a little to my chest, but what would that say to my daughter Abby? I would rather she take the "Permission to Shine" route rather than the "Pressure to be Sexy" message relentlessly hounded upon in the media.

Having pontificated on all of that... let me add that I accept the criticism that maybe I'm judgemental. And it wouldn't be the first time! I hated sister missionaries and swore I would never become one of those "girls who had nothing going for them and so they "had" to go on a mission because no one would marry them". Yep-changed my mind about that and served a fantastic life tranforming mission in Spain.

Later I felt pretty strongly about homeschooling families... that they were, "Back woods extreme conservatists who were ruining their children's lives!". Yep... I joined them too! After learning more about what a home education REALLY was about, I became a homeschooling mom for 3 years and consider it to be the greatest education I and my family have experienced together. Our kids are in public school now, but I'll always be a homeschool mom at heart and love to apply the many principles of home education as a supplement to the public education.

I remember one night pitying a mom who decided to work a few hours a week as a waitress to supplement that family income (while her husband was at home with the kids). I was just so wrought with distress for her that she wasn't truly a "stay at home mom" any longer. And yes... you guessed it- a few months later, I got my Real Estate License and partnered with my husband in job sharing.

Pageantry was never high on my list of respectable programs too support or participate in. I viewed contestants as hollow shells in high heals with a fake purpose conjured up in order to win a self-promoting title. How's that for judgemental? Now look at me... one of THEM! Although, hopefully, those of you who know me well will hopefully agree that I have a little substance to my character and I really do believe in my platform. Since embarking on this pageant path, I have discovered that once again, my notions of pageantry were incorrect. Although there are some who fit my previous description and are misquided in their efforts, the majority of women I have met are powerful, well meaning, spiritually motivated, service oriented, leaders with a mission and a message that they want to promote on a grand scale.

I admit it! I have been and probably will continue to be judgemental! I fight against it and hope that I can recognize it for what it is and change. Nonetheless... there you have it-I'm TERRIBLY FLAWED! Each of my "transformations" to becoming a Sister Missionary, Homeschooling mom, Realtor, and Pageant Contestant have been very spiritually based decisions that I confidently know were right for me and my family.

So... who knows, maybe I'll be the next one lining up for Botox. It wouldn't be the first time that I've changed my mind about something. For now though, my beauty efforts are based in 36 man push ups by mid-October, no more of those wimpy push ups on my knees.

I welcome your comments...

Friday 3rd October 2008

Some women will go to any lengths to try and look younger, whether that's botox, anti-ageing creams or just make up. But we came across some research recently that suggests that women age much faster than men.

The research that produced this remarkable finding used new infra-red laser technology and found that women lose collagen at a faster rate than men, which results in more wrinkles! The technology may even help with the analysis of skin diseases as well as test the effectiveness of anti ageing creams. This could herald a genuinely useful scientific breakthrough.

To read our take on how this might affect the cosmetics industry and what the vital ingredients are to prevent, or slow, ageing, go here.

So.... I'm jumping in about 20 minutes late, but I have so many thoughts so I'm going to be live blogging.

10:07 -- Biden isn't a very good speaker. He's very sporadic and doesn't do well developing his point. He said McCain like 16 times in about 30 seconds, realized it, and was like "let me rephrase... OBAMA" because I think he realized how stupid he sounded.

10:08 -- I think he got Botox on his forehead and missed the rest of his face. And he has squinty eye syndrome. And why does he keep breathing really loudly? It's annoying me. Stop it. He also makes very strange facial expressions...

10:09 -- Sarah Palin is very pretty. I like her hair down better.... the hair up think was turning into a "hot secretary" cliche... it's good she changed it.

10:10 -- She just totally pwned Joe Biden. She was like "I'm not used to this Washington stuff" and he smiled thinking it was about her experience and then she called im out about his flip-flopping on Obama. When he was Obama's opponent he was so ridiculously against him, and now they're running partners.

10:13 -- All these ridiculous promises. "We're going to kill Osama Bin Ladin"

10:13 -- Why does she keep looking at me!? It's like the Mona Lisa.... everywhere I go in the room she's still looking at me. Stop! :)

10:15 -- She's killing him with kindness. Interesting tactic? I'm not sure. Sorda fake.

10:27 -- What is he talking about? Braces? or something? What??? I didn't really follow that..... I don't think anyone had any damn idea what the hell he was talking about.

My overall thoughts -- I missed the first 20 minutes ... so I could be off base here, but from what I saw I feel like Palin was more confident and got her point across better. She was really great at sticking to talking about what SHE stood for and HOW she would do things... instead of Biden talking about what the Bush administration does and attacking McCain.... the only thing he really said about the Obama campaign was these crazy promises that are just... I don't know. "Change" in Washington and "change" in America... it takes TIME. TINY TINY TINY changes take YEARS! And he's making these huge promises... and not just 1 or 2 promises but like many unrealistic promises. They're like the kids in student cousel who are like "We'll get free lunch food, and longer summer vacations, and free alcohol at prom!" it sounds awesome to the people voting but it's unrealistic and it's never going to happen.

There's my 2 cents.

You've probably heard a lot about BOTOX® Cosmetic. It's been in the news, in fashion, health, and beauty magazines, and on TV. Your friends may even be talking about how it works.

Could this be what you’ve been looking for—a procedure that can temporarily smooth those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows with no surgery and no recovery time? An improvement can be seen within days, lasting for up to 4 months. Results may vary.

Almost 3.3 million procedures were performed in 2005 alone—a 16% increase over 2004. Not just models and movie stars, but people from all types of professions have tried it.

In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) ranked BOTOX® Cosmetic as the most popular physician-administered aesthetic procedure in the United States for the fourth year in a row (surgical and nonsurgical combined).

What's more, the ASAPS surveys ranked BOTOX® Cosmetic as one of the low-entry-cost facial aesthetic procedures in the United States.

Everyone knows Sharon Stone's a bit wacky, but this week, we found out just how wacky. During the custody battle between Stone and her ex-husband, Phil Bronstein, for their 8-year-old son, Roan. And I think Bronstein's got a pretty good case, since according to court documents:

"Another example of an overreaction is that Mother suggested that Roan should have Botox injections in his feet to resolve a problem he had with foot odor. As Father appropriately noted, the simple and common sense approach of making sure Roan wore socks with his shoes and used foot deodorant corrected the odor problem without the need for any invasive procedure on this young child."

WOW. Methinks little Roan will one day write a bestseller that'll put Christina Crawford's to shame.

“Statistics have revealed that UK men are shying away from going under the knife for cosmetic improvements in favour of lower risk and less invasive procedures.” So Say the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Well, we know that men make up 40% of our clients, so they are hardly under-represented for our type of non-surgical treatments, and for several of our treatments more men than women now access the services. The Surgeons don’t comment on the reasons for this trend. Many celeb males these days make no secret of the fact that they use botox, for example.

What do you think? Do you know any men who have turned to cosmetic treatments to improve their appearance?

Sharon Stone is a head case.

According to TMZ.com, Stoner tends to overreact when it comes to the medical treatments she deems fit for her 8-year-old son Roan. A judge in the ongoing custody battle between Shazzers and ex-hubby Phil Bronstein said that the most shocking overreaction is her suggestion that the kid should have botox injections in his tootsies in order to combat the alarming stench that they produce. Come the f*ck on, what kid doesn't have stinking feet? She probably wanted to get a discount on a Costco-size bag of botox so she'd always have a supply handy for her face.

According to the San Francisco judge Bronstein had a more sensical approach to the stench issue, suggesting that Roan wear socks with his shoes.

The judge said Bronstein had a more "simple and common sense approach" to Roan's problem: he made sure he "wore socks with his shoes and used foot deodorant" to avoid "any invasive procedure on this young child."

Tuesday 30th September 2008

When we started out in 2003 we were totally ‘non-invasive’ so this ruled out doing Botox (known as Vistabel in the UK). However, over time, so many of our clients were requesting it that we did some research and decided to relax our stance to being ‘non-surgical’, thus allowing injections.

Botox is still the best way to reduce the visible signs of wrinkles and providing you find reputable practitioner it should be totally safe with little danger of unwanted effects.

But should young people start to use Botox to avoid getting wrinkles in the first place? Tell us what you think!
