1. Film Company: Congratulations You've just been hired. Welcome to the team! And since you've had to endure that awful city Los Angeles we've decided to up your salary. 

2. Kip: Wow you do (that) amazingly well. I think I'll move back to London...forever. 

3. John and Yoko Flatmates: We've just reduced your rent because we realize you never use the common area and we feel bad hogging the flat screen television every night and trying to force you to eat our organic chicken. Also, our cat, Jack, would happily like you to know he will no longer be joining you during those midnight bathroom runs. 

4. Carla: Ethan just told me he wants to fuck your American brains out...and then go out for a cuppa tea followed by a couple episodes of The West Wing naked in his bed. Holy Mama! 

5. NHS General Practitioner: You're health is impeccable, I'm impressed.  In fact, you're so amazing you can stop by anytime, no appointment necessary. In fact, here's my mobile number...

6. Literary Agent: I read your script and was so impressed I passed it around the office. Luckily for you, Mike Leigh just happened to be in, read it and wants to direct it straight away. What's your schedule like and when can we buy you an expensive lunch? 

7. Carla: Ethan wants you to come back and fuck your brains out again...and buy you a multi-regional DVD player so you too can enjoy his HUGE...DVD collection when he's not around. And so Tilia can also reap the benefits of his...generosity. 

8. Letter from Topshop: Congratulations! You've just won a £1,000 shopping spree in our largest shop on Oxford Street. A stretch limo will pick you up at your flat at your earliest convenience so you don't have to carry all those awfully heavy bags down to the tube and get them knicked. 

9. Oxfam Sales Manager: Excuse me Miss, I've noticed you walk by every day eyeing that vintage violin in the window. I've decided to go ahead and save you the walk. Here you go, it's yours. Happy early Christmas. It was a vagrants anyways...someone knicked it off him while he was sleeping outside the door...I feel quite bad about it actually and need to emit some goodwill out into the universe. 

10. Post Office Delivery Man: (Leaves a note with package on the doorstep) Hiya. This is Delivery man 2195. Now I know we can be right twats, only ringing the bell once at 7 am and leaving with a chuckle, making you wait days for your package where you have to go pick it up on some dodgy back street near some hole in the wall accompanied by lots of crackheads whistling, staring and asking for a fiver. To make it up to you, on behalf of the entire Royal Mail team here in London, I've especially wrapped your Amazon purchase in a fancy box with a bow. Attached is a year's membership for free local delivery.

In my previous (and very first) garden, the only patch of ground that was free of summer-long shade was on the street, in the parking strip. So, if I wanted a few veggies, herbs and strawberries to nibble, I had no option but to garden out there. Not being too handy, but feeling like a raised bed was the best way to contend with tree roots and crummy soil, I pondered the options. My mom ended up getting some friends to build me one as one of my all-time best ever birthday presents. I got a lot of fun and use out of it, and was really bummed to drive by our old house recently and see that the new owners had dismantled it for some unknown reason. Maybe I should ask if I can have the pieces back, to rebuild it (by myself, this time) in our current place...

Here are some links for building raised beds. I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here, just providing some options.

Sunset Magazine has a fairly simple design, and they claim it can be built with redwood or cedar for under $200. Does require a table saw, though.

Here's a really spiffy one, from This Old House. Pricier too, though, and probably needing someone pretty handy to put it together.

Prefer a video? This is kind of goofy (bonus for dog-lovers, cute labs co-star, chasing sticks and a frisbee), but shows how to make a planter bed with untreated 2 X 12's, coated at home with linseed oil. Tells you how to mole-proof, too.

This is a Texas A & M University (Ag school) article, " In Praise of Raised Beds," with advice about how big to build yours and how to prepare the ground, what soil to add, etc.

Treated wood is icky. Nobody knows for sure what it leaches into your soil, so try to avoid it if possible!

Here's an example of some raised planter beds in our neighborhood:

Small crosswise ones allow you to reach in and not have to step on and therefore compact the soil.

This one is a small square bed, great for a vertical crop like beans or peas plus whatever you want to plant around the edges.

You can also forgo wood altogether and make a bed out of paver bricks or broken concrete (scroll down in the latter link to see a nicely formed herb bed using this method). To be legal with the city, at least in Seattle, raised beds in the parking strip require a permit, and bricks or stones must be fixed in place, not removable for easy hurling.

Raised beds make root crops like carrots and beets much easier to grow, and in an urban setting, adding your own soil from a known safe source is a plus too. Before you set up your bed, be sure to double-dig or rototill the existing soil to help with drainage. And don't forget to add lots of compost! Anyone have a favorite? Mushroom compost? Something containing bat guano, perhaps? Or just home-grown?

The Red Sox fan who paid $175,100 for the tattered David Ortiz jersey buried in the foundation of the new Yankee Stadium had the best seats in the house at last night's game: The Boss' box.

Massachusetts car dealer Kevin Meehan rooted for the hated Sox from the Steinbrenner box after snapping up the luxe seats in a charity auction. Boston won 7-3.

He bought the seats months before the jersey was found buried in two feet of freshly laid concrete.

"I suppose I could have worn the shirt, but it would have caused a bloodbath," Meehan said. But he called his first ever trip to the Stadium "a great experience," adding, "Everyone was really friendly."

The Ortiz jersey was jackhammered out of the concrete in April after Sox-loving Bronx hardhat Gino Castignoli buried it behind home plate in an effort to curse the Yanks. Proceeds from its sale went to a cancer-research charity.

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable influx of Red Sox fans at Yankee Stadium. But, who knew that the proud owner of a now infamous David Ortiz jersey that cost the Yankees a lot of grief, pride and money, would end up enjoying a Sox-Yanks game in one of the best seating areas that the current stadium has to offer. Meanwhile, Yankee fans are having trouble getting past the Tier Reserve section. Couldn't someone at least heckle the guy (oh yea, he was sitting in some box seats).

La diferencia entre un producto y otro la encontramos en la parte de hardware. Some things never change.

Today I am still controversial, but not in the same way as pre-1989.

Back in that day, I let spew from my mouth whatever would pour out, and the feelings of others were of no consequence to me. I was pretty heartless --- it was a total defense mechanism. My life philosophy was "do unto others before they do unto you." I was all about the pre-emptive strike, the hardened exterior, barfing my opinions in the most self-important way possible...I was pretty cold-blooded to everyone who thought they knew me. Richard somehow saw through that and married me anyway.

Today, I am a mother of six, a wife of eighteen years and a woman who deeply loves Jesus who, in the last five months, has chopped fifteen inches from her hair, changed her legal first name, and gotten a nostril piercing and a tattoo symbolic of my freedom in Christ.

I took none of those actions, made none of those changes, to fit in with or gain the approval of any group of people. I took those actions for me.

I broke out. The box I lived in had become uninhabitable, its boundaries predefined by theologies that lacked the grace of God. What seemed perfectly suitable for many years began to show its inadequacy, having become warped by the deluging rains of hard knocks and unable to contain the resulting growth I was experiencing as an individual.

Some of my more conservative Christian siblings would consider me a backslider, a carnal Christian, a pagan or a heathen. Here's where the "controversial" label comes in: whether they approve, it's not my problem. My heart still belongs to my "Abba, Papa, Daddy, Father."

I don't mind being controversial, as long as it is known that nothing stands between me and my Lord.
