My father is a man of few words and even fewer jokes - but he capitalizes on the few jokes that he does know by repeating them as often as possible to whoever will listen. His favorites are the observational classics (e.g. why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?) and as such, he can often be heard musing, "why do 24-hour convenience stores have locks on them?" The first few times I laughed. "That's a good question," I chuckled. But as the years went on and I continued hearing the "joke" on a weekly basis, I began to tire of feigning excitement. As such I have decided to document the answer here in the first ever edition of "Economics Explains..." so that my father can have the answer in writing and he no longer needs to ask the question rhetorically at gatherings, get-togethers, and funerals.

The answer lies in a basic economic idea known as the "cost-benefit" principle, which says that you should take an action if and only if the extra benefit from taking it is greater than the extra cost. Most industrial doors go to stores that are not open 24-hours a day, so these doors would obviously need to have locks on them. Because the majority of doors would need locks, it is cheaper for the manufacturer to make all doors with locks - whether they will end up going to a 24-hour convenience store or a bank. The alternative would be for the manufacturer to hold two separate inventories of doors and then they would also have to track their shipments to make sure the right doors are going to the right locations. Doing this would create a greater cost to the manufacturer and to the buyer because they would be buying an item that is manufactured specially without locks, rather than a mass-produced industrial door. Because the cost would be significantly higher and the benefit would not really change, the "cost-benefit" principle shows that it would be inefficient for 24-hour convenience stores to get doors without locks.

For the record, this is the same principle behind having braille on drive-thru ATMs. It's cheaper to just make all keypads with braille and numbers rather than keeping track of separate inventories and tracking shipments and locations.

Look for more "Economics Explains..." in the future right here, and look for (god willing) far less references to locks on 24-hour conevenient stores in conversations with my father from now on.

When we first went online, back in the dial-up days when connections were s-l-o-w, I would spend hours and hours navigating through a maze of websites. Our internet connection was through a community freenet, and because it was so cheap, we were limited to ONE hour a day between the hours of 8 a.m. and midnight. Unlimited access was available between midnight and 8 a.m. So, through the day I would dial in, download my email, and quickly disconnect, but at night, after midnight, I became this information-seeking sponge, absorbing as many of the fascinating facts and figures out there on the web that I could, until I was too exhausted to focus on the words on the screen. I guess at that point you could say I was in a dial-up daze!

One of the sites that I found, way back in those old days, is Martindale's The Reference Desk http://www.martindalecenter.com/. It's truly more of an index with links to other sites throughout the world. I think there is very little original content on this site, but still it is amazing! It has oodles of international information - statistics, geography, medical, veterinary science, and mathematics. It boasts of having links to 23,565 online calculators! There's links to interactive sign language and braille sites, and there are even online sight and hearing test links! Every time I pop into this site I am in awe.

Another site is RefDesk.com Fast Facts http://www.refdesk.com/fastfact.html. There probably isn't quite as much information available through this site as there is on The Reference Desk site, and most of the information is focused on the United States, but the amount of amassed information is still very impressive.

If you get a chance to explore either of these sites, you probably won't regret it.

I'll share more of my favourite finds from the internet in future posts. In the meantime, if you have any websites you'd like to share, please let me know.

Braille, Braille Brizzy whatever you want to call him, he has accomplished quite a bit over the last couple of years. He’s released four solo albums, his group Lightheaded (Ohmega Watts, Othello and Braille) has released two albums that will just blow your mind, plus the guy has his own record label “HipHopIsMusic” that contains many talented artists (Sharlok Poems, Theory Hazit to name a few). While I haven’t listened to Lifefirst (his first album) his sophomore album Shades of Grey is the album that I think put him on the map.

Shades of Grey comes with a unique sound that can never be duplicated, the album has everything you could possibly want in a high caliber album. Dope lyrics, superb production, and my favorite: guest appearances (Ohmega Watts, Sharlok Poems, ManChild to name a few). This album has no problems whatsoever, so why don’t I just end the review and give it a 5/5? Well I gotta do my song analysis first!

Braille comes out the gate strong with the track “It Won’t Last” which features Othello and Pigeon John (of LA Symphony). The acoustic guitar playing in the background with the hip hop beat, along with the world analyzing lyrics cause for a stellar song. As the record continues the song “Hip Hop Is Music” informs the listener of the stereotypes associated with Hip Hop and how a lot of them aren’t true for all artists. The production behind this track is solid also.

One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Statements Part 2” featuring Ohmega Watts. Throughout this entire track Braille and Ohmega basically promote their new group Lightheaded. Braille and Ohmega also reminisce about Return to Sender (their group before Lightheaded). Ohmega and Braille team up again later in the album with “The Find” except this time Ohmega is the one producing the beat and Braille handles the rhymes. Listening to this track makes me want to hear an album entirely produced by Ohmega with Braille handling all the rhymes (like Theory Hazit and Vintage’s Lord Fire).

“Keep On” is another strong motivational track on the album, I actually listened to this track just before I had basketball tryouts. You can’t help but feel like you can do anything after listening to this song, here’s some of the lyrics from this song.

“Sometimes I feel like giving up

Sometimes I feel like it’s not worth the fight

Sometimes I feel like nobody cares
Cried at night and realized God was right there

So regardless of what’s seen with physical eyes

I know there’s meaning to life

And even when I’m feel down, defiled, defeated and tried

I can still lift my hands to the sky”

Anytime you feel like you can’t get past a certain trial you’re in right now or feel like you just can’t take life anymore, pop in this song and it should give you the motivation you need to get past anything. The central message of this song is if you’re going through something serious that you don’t feel you can get past turn to God and he will get you through the situation no matter what.

My cousin introduced me to Christian Hip Hop and when I was sitting in his car he played “Let Go” and when he gave me the album to keep I played “Let Go” for about 2 months without listening to any other song on the album, that’s how good it was. The track actually features three other emcees, unfortunately I have no idea who they are, but whoever they are they bring another dimension to this song. The track is pretty self-explanatory letting go of the bad things that are in your life whether it be your pride, sin whatever just let go and let God handle everything.

After 14 tracks of greatness Braille finishes the album with the best song on the CD. “Shades of Grey” has that movie finale type beat along with the best lyrics on the album. In this song Braille takes a Sev Statik approach to the song, he puts the world under a microscope and analyzes it which makes the song that much better. Here’s some of the lyrics of this song.

“Correcting bad habits, laughing as I drown in mystical tears

Mind-consuming thoughts that my physical fears

I can’t listen with ears cause words will deceive

As I stand up against darker versions of me

Looking over my shoulder waiting for false moves

dancing around landmines and get lost in the groove

what happens when all the light slowly fades away

you try to see God inside a shade of grey

he’s ever present through my mistakes, faults and follies

He could’ve left me falling but instead he caught me

And I answer silent, unsure what to say

Just thanking him for life even with the shades of grey”

This is honestly one of the strongest tracks lyrically that I’ve ever heard from any song. If you aren’t able to pick up the entire album at least pick up this song.

Braille’s sophomore album is a prime example of what music should be like, it should teach you life lessons while still allowing the listener to be able to enjoy the art of the genre. Braille gives the listener an appreciation for Hip Hop that is missing in the mainstream Hip Hop world. There is no reason that you shouldn’t pick up this album this album is an instant classic that will be rotating on your CD Player/MP3 Player for years on end. With meaningful tracks like “Let Go”, “Keep On”, “Nobody”, “10 Years” and “Shades of Grey” plus the extraordinary production behind the album takes this album to a level that probably won’t be reached for a long time. Shades of Grey is easily on of the Top 3 albums I’ve listened to (#2 being Lord Fire by Theory Hazit and #1 being The Find by Ohmega Watts).

Good

It’s easily the best album I’ve listened to lyrically of all time.

Solid Production

Many guest appearances (ManChild, Sharlok Poems, Othello, Pigeon John and others)

Bad

The only bad thing about this album is the fact that it’s overlooked.

Rating: 5/5 (Don’t Pass This Up, You’ll Regret It, INSTANT CLASSIC)

Me: Are you worried?

Sophie: Going blind? No...

Me: Then...?

Sophie: I'm worried because I'm not ready.

Over the years, we've constantly reminded ourselves that her condition is progressive. That is, it will worsen over time. What is uncertain is the rate and extent of progression. It can be so slow it is hardly noticeable, or very rapid. She can retain most of her vision until adulthood, or lose most of it before then. We do not know!

Thus far, the rate of progression has been rather negligible. So much so that we're beginning to take her vision for granted. Until that day, when she expressed her fear – she wasn't prepared! She said she's so used to having some vision, and using it for most of her daily tasks, she can't imagine how she would get anything done without it. I told her it was not impossible. She knows, but she also knows it would take a while getting used to having very little vision left to do most things.

I started blaming myself for not preparing her well for this eventuality. After all, we have been talking about it. Yes, talking and not doing anything about it! We decided we should start with Braille again, and other daily living tasks that she can perform without sight.

We began Braille again – another beginning for it. We've had so many beginnings and never reached the end. I hope this time, it would be different. I've decided I shall not bore her with getting all the letters right, but to proceed to contractions, beginning with the single letter contractions. I'm using the “I Do Like It” Braille teaching programme I got from Gillian. Instead of having her commit all the single letter contractions to memory, which can be rather boring for someone like Sophie, I got her to read almost immediately, focusing on patterns instead. She's doing fine. We hope to do at least 20 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of brailling each day for a start. I hope we can make it!

Suddenly, all other things doesn't seem quite so important anymore... her grades in school. I reckon that if we have to pull her out of school because of her vision, then so be it. The system here is not very forgiving, and certainly doesn't not wait for her. She was upset that she may have to leave her friends, but I told her she'll make new ones. It isn't the same, she said. And unfortunately, she's right! The implication of losing her sight is a lot wider than I had first anticipated. And honestly, I haven't the slightest idea how best to go about it ... that's my greatest fear. I'm not prepared!

Touch Sight is a digital camera for visually impaired people, recording an "image" and sound of the environment or voice.
Touch Sight does not have an LCD but instead has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface, allowing the user to touch the image. The sound file and picture document combine to become a touchable photo that is saved in the device and can be uploaded to share with others--and downloaded to other Touch Sight cameras.

222. Miracle Ride by Tzipi Caton

I've read this cover to cover in a few short hours this evening, and feel like I've learnt something from it, although I hope I already knew not to be quite so pushy and/or judgemental as some of the people 'Caton' (the book is written under a pseudonym, with some names/details changed for privacy) is confronted by. (It's a good thing I already hated both the word and the concept of 'nebach'. Completely unhelpful, in my opinion.)

This book is a rewritten version, including some later perspective, of her journal of the year from when she first noticed her lymph nodes were enlarged, aged just sixteen, through diagnosis (Hodgkin's lymphoma), treatment, and trying to get back to normal life afterwards, but then discovering that she just isn't quite the same person she was beforehand, and can't do things in the same way, following the same track as her classmates. While their troubles and stresses for the most part still are the latest test by an unsympathetic teacher, she cannot fully relate while dealing with debilitating treatments, friends (of friends) dying, and the side-effects of powerful drugs. It's a powerful tale, that has some strong lessons for the people around those going through life-testing situations, the Orthodox Jewish community in particular, and for those dealing with teenage girls in general. Baruch Hashem I amn't qualified to judge its value for those actually going through such situations, but I don't doubt it would have a high one.

Otherwise, it's still hot (this weather was supposed to break days ago) and I'm still hardly crocheting. The Braille is progressing, however, and as I type and read words I keep semi-consciously working out which contractions they would include!

Niccolo Rising chapter three: Poor (unmarried) Katelina is going to regret repeating something she should never have been told...

I love this guy's attitude and creativity. He is definately keeping it FRESH.

"Cuprocking is the brain child of Sydney based artist Andy Uprock. By mapping out large areas of cyclone fencing and sticking plastic cups into the existing diamond shaped holes, Andy transforms streets and public areas into floating walk-by galleries. Andy typically uses around 2,500 individual cups for each piece and recycles them between each project. "

"Andy also creates braille poetry out of the cups and people are calling it the very first form of graffiti for the blind. Andy describes the process as being like "solving Japanese algebra blindfolded".

He's created a couple of braille pieces on the streets of Melbourne and Sydney already and an exhibition, in conjunction with Vision Australia, is being planned for when the guys return from their international cuprocking jaunt.

IS THERE NOTHING HE CAN'T DO?

Andy is the kind of person who makes you realise that you definitely could have been doing more with your life and of his many surprising talents, dancing is probably the most crucial to his core. Growing up as a b-boy in the 90s, with his mother and elder sisters being key influences, Andy has taught himself over 12 different styles of dance, and is known to have one of the most unique and stylised uprocks in the biz. It's like he's always looking for the next challenge and if it means learning how to walk upstairs on his hands, then so be it.

Andy is also an accomplished painter whose art depicts some of the most beautiful and fascinating elements of this universe. With some of his paintings involving over 300 hours of labour, these complex and cryptic works leave you in a seamless, timeless state of consciousness. It's Andy's incessant questioning of the world and his astute fascination with life, rhythm and movement that makes him such an interesting artist. "

When I first listened to Lightheaded (Braille, Othello and Ohmega Watts) Othello was my favorite mem

When I first listened to Lightheaded (Braille, Othello and Ohmega Watts) Othello was my favorite member, he has a unique voice plus he could be considered one of the fastest rappers known to man (with Twista being the fastest). Eventually I asked my cousin (around Christmas time) if I could borrow both of Othello’s albums, his first one Elevator Music and his second one Alive at the Assembly. I listened to Elevator Music for the first time and I was decently pleased, but I decided to listen to it again this morning so I could write this review.

Othello comes out the gate with the track “Rock, Rock” which sounds ok, the track had a lot of potential, but it was missing that new school element. Now the people that have read my review on Theory Hazit and Vintage’s Lord Fire know that I don’t mind old school sound as long as the artist mixes some new school with it. Othello doesn’t do this, but the song is still a good track and is definitely a track to play at parties. If this song was played in the 80’s it would probably be a smash hit (I‘m not dissing the song), but now it needs just a something to push this track to the top.

This brings us to my favorite track on the album “Heart” which brings an interesting sound that I’ve never heard while listening to Christian Hip Hop. The slightly jaded piano beat brings the song to a level that hip hop fans would like. The song covers his influence on hip hop (referenced to as the “Art”), Othello says how when he makes music he puts his heart into the album and tracks. Destro (I’ve never heard of him before) makes a guest appearance and doesn’t bring the track down nor does he really uplift the track very much. Still it is my favorite track on the album and you can download the track for free at the end of this bottom of this post.

Elevator Music shows signs of potential in tracks like “Organic”, “How Ya Livin” and “Goodwill Chopping”. “Organic being my favorite out of the trio of tracks just listed, Organic has a very mesmerizing beat that is attractive to the ears. The beat has a more of an R&B type beat to it, but Othello makes it work in this case. Lyrically the song is decent, it’s one of the songs where his Christianity is evident and shines through in this song.

“Goodwill Chopping” is a the song that best showcases Othello’s talent and specifically features Othello’s extremely fast rapping ability. Othello’s special guest on this song is Red Cloud who also almost matches Othello’s superb rapping speed. Tell you the truth though I can’t tell whether the song is about mainstream hip hop, or God’s will for our life versus our will or both. The song has an unexplainable beat, but it meshes with the song pretty well.

Othello is a very talented emcee, but Elevator Music doesn’t cover the surface of his talent unfortunately. A lot of the songs not covered in this song has literally elevator type music, which last time I checked this was supposed to be a hip hop album. Now I can’t lie some of the tracks containing elevator music are good because of the hip hop incorporated into the song. The album also contains instrumentals of only elevator music, the last track on the album “No Mic For Thai” starts with the elevator music contained in the track “Lobby” the only difference between the two tracks is that “No Mic For Thai” is longer and eventually a jazz band comes in and plays (imagine the jazz band that plays on Jay Leno). Lyrically the album struggles it’s hard to pinpoint the idea Othello is trying to convey to the listener. Plus the guests that are present tend to outshine Othello to a certain extent not big, but noticeable. The album isn’t terrible, but it’s not good either wouldn’t pick up the album simply download the singles below on iTunes or something like that.

Good

The elevator music beats for some tracks shows creative juices

The album introduces some emcees that people might not know of (Red Cloud, Sirens Echo, Deep6 etc.)

Bad

The album sounds more like an R&B album with rap in it.

Lyrically the album is lacking and it’s hard to cipher out what Othello’s message is.

The elevator music instrumentals are pointless and kind of annoying.

Rating: 3/5 (Download the singles you like because

Theory Hazit has really been moving up in the past year, being a featured artist on many tracks for different emcees from Ohmega Watts to Surreal. Theory is also a very talented producer, producing for the Scribbling Idiots who also just released an extremely talented album. Theory also has a solo record that has also been receiving rave reviews. So what can Theory do now? How about do another solo record except this time team up with another talented producer in Vintage. What do you get when you mix Theory Hazit with Producer Vintage, enter Lord Fire.

This is yet another emcee and DJ collaboration, which is starting to become a common mainstay in Christian Hip Hop, (examples being Surreal and DJ Balance, Othello and DJ Manwell, SevStatik and DJ Dust, ManChild and DJ Dust) Theory Hazit and Vintage have also joined the bandwagon. The two succeeded just like the ones mentioned in parenthesis. Theory Hazit is a very interesting emcee and he’s one of the prime examples of a turnaround in Christian Hip Hop and he talks about it in his music. This is speculation, but I’m guessing Theory and Vintage met through Vintage’s partial production of The Scribbling Idiots The Have Nots album. Another interesting aspect of the album is the guests featured on Lord Fire which include: Playdough, Raphi (aka Big Shame), Sivion, Ohmega Watts and many others. So how does this hold up to other Christian Hip Hop albums?

Right off the bat you realize the album has an interesting sound, a mixture between old school and now. You can easily recognize and distinguish the difference between both. It’s only right that I tell you now, every single song on Lord Fire is awesome, the production and lyricism behind the album is genius, along with guest appearances from emcees in the four big hip hop groups (The Scribbling Idiots, Tunnel Rats, Lightheaded and DeepSpace5) just makes this album amazing.

The album snags you from the beginning taking your ears on a journey you will never forget, but the first memorable track (and my favorite track on the album) is early on in Lord Fire. “All Love” is the most heartfelt track on the album, which deals with one of Theory’s darkest parts of his journey to Christianity: his parents. While Theory doesn’t give details about what happened between him and his parents, he plays both sides of the field saying how both parties messed up, badly. Theory apologizes for all he has done and gives his parents credit for trying their best to raise him. What also takes this track to the next level is the addition of Elias to the track. He doesn’t rap on the track he’s a singer and in this song he handles the chorus. The beat is also superb with the high hat in the background and the deep bass line makes this song the best on the album.

Playdough who is part of DeepSpace5 is the next artist who gets a verse with Theory Hazit in the song “Soph Sissy” which is an entire track that takes a shot at the mainstream hip hop world. This song should be one of the anthems for Christian Hip Hop. While I love Theory Hazit as an artist, I believe Playdough’s verse outshines Theory’s (sorry Theory Hazit). Here’s a snippet.

“You’re so thugged out, so hood with your pedicure

Gun in your holster for your dinner date with Bennifer

Fools ain’t grimy, live large and tiny

8 by ten gloss he’s shiny

Polished and perfect,

But ain’t got no elbow grease…”

So as you can see the song pretty much dogs out the entire mainstream hip hop community and for that I say thank you Playdough.

“Nobody Say” is another track great-sounding track on Lord Fire. The track features Braille and Raphi (aka Big Shame) both add another dimension to this tune. Raphi and Theory Hazit rhyme on their long journey through Childhood to where they are now, Braille on the other hand raps about where he end up after his journey and how he’s enjoying life. What sets this song apart from the others is the beat. Vintage did an extremely good job producing this track, using the slight guitar riff along with keyboard to create the perfect example of old school and new school combined together.

In the end Lord Fire is an amazing example of Christian Hip Hop prowess, in other words Theory Hazit and Vintage should definitely get together again because it could only result in one thing: Awesomeness. While this album is extraordinary it has a couple flaws, first the sound, don’t worry there are no annoying beeps or scratches, but it’s not loud enough. It’s almost like while Theory rapped loud enough it seemed like Theory recorded the album then Vintage took what Theory gave him, made soft beats and turned down Theory’s voice. This is a slight shortcoming all this means is that you’re gonna have to turn up your MP3 players a little louder when listening to Lord Fire. Another slight problem is the language specifically the use of the N-Word. The word is mentioned in two songs “Jive Turkey” and “Simply Ill”, Theory doesn’t say it, two of the guests say it (one being Freddie Bruno the other I have no idea who it is). Even with this language the album is still a big step in the right direction and I really hope Theory and Vintage team up again for what would most likely be another amazing album

The mix of old school and new school beats mesh well together

The many guests on the album add another dimension to the album

All 17 songs are amazing and creative

Bad

The use of the N-Word is a big turnoff

The sound quality is kind of soft (but not too soft)

Every public library I visited in Japan, there is always a corner of Braille edition books and audio books for visually impaired people. That is what we call "Library for All".
