Canadian watchdog reviews role of new media

Canada’s broadcast watchdog, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC

Canada's broadcast watchdog, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), wants to hear from Canadians about what it how it should deal with the Internet.

At issue is whether the CRTC should extend its mandate to the Internet, a medium that is free from regulatory oversight.

The chairman of the CRTC, Konrad von Finckenstein, outlined the watchdog's approach:

“New digital technologies and platforms are creating opportunities for the broadcast of professionally-produced Canadian content that simply didn't exist a few years ago. Our intention is not to regulate new media, but rather to gain a better understanding of this environment and, if necessary, to propose measures that would support the continued achievement of the Broadcasting Act's objectives.”

As part of its public consultation, the CRTC released a 75-page report (PDF) on research and attitudes to the Internet that provides some insight into how the media landscape is changing in Canada.

The report frames the debate in terms of preserving and promoting "Canadian content in a global new media broadcasting environment". The CRTC is approaching the Internet as a broadcast medium, much like television or radio. This reveals a fundamental misconception of the net, as it is not less of a one-to-many and more of a many-to-many medium. But the public consultation is framed within the notion of the net as another form of broadcast.

In a sense, this reflects the reality of existing Canadian content online. The CRTC report found that Canadian content produced initially for the Internet is rare:

"Professionally produced new media broadcasting content available online is, for the most part, re-purposed from a form intended to be as exhibited on television and radio platforms. Traditionalbroadcasters use new media to promote their programs, allowing viewers to“catch-up” on missed episodes and providing additional information about the
programs."

This can be partly explained by the lack of government subsidies for new media content. While there are subsidy programs for the development of Canadian content primarily in film and TV, money for new media content is minimal.

However, Canadian media organisations would do well to take notice of how audiences are changing. The CRTC report found that high-speed residential Internet access is now available to 93% of households across the country and has been adopted by more than 60% of Canadian households.

It will come as no surprise that youngsters lead the way. According to the CRTC report:

In 2006, 91% of Canadians aged 18 to 34 accessed the Internet, compared to only 69% of Canadians aged 55 or older.

In December 2006, approximately 30% of Canadian adults online connected for more than 10 hours per week. This compares to 52% for young Canadian adults aged 18 to 24.

Canadians under 18 now spend roughly the same amount of time online as they do watching TV - between 15 and 17 hours).

Clearly a shift in taking place in media consumption, so a debate on Canada's approach to new media is timely. People have until July 11 to file comments, and the CRTC plans to hold public hearings in early 2009.

Congratulations Israel! Today, 60 years ago the British mandate of Palestine ended. The state of Israel had been declared the previous day. It was quickly recognized by The United States of America, The Soviet Union, and many other states. The tiny state of Israel were attacked by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, and was also aided by forces from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Libya. Miraculously, Israel was able to resist and survive the overwhelming attacks – Israel was a fact.

2700 years earlier this was prophesied by Isaiah, who said Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? [or] shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children (Is 66:8). Through 60 years of hardship and 8 wars forced upon the nation by the hostile surrounding Arab nations, Israel has prevailed. As the only democracy in the region, Israel needs our support. I have been so lucky to be visiting Israel 12 times, and it has always been a pleasure and a delight to be in the Land of the Bible. If you haven’t been to Israel yet, I would encourage you to plan a visit to this exciting country.

Norwegian friends of Israel celebrated the jubilee by a gathering in the theater Forum Kino in Bergen. Norwegian local officials and the Israeli Ambassador were present. Ambassador Miryam Shomrat characterized the event as A great birthday party.

The celebration was hosted by Norwegian weekly Norge IDAG, International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, and TV Visjon Norge.

Hello Fello Wordpressers! Its Abby Here,

You know...this whole thing with only me blogging is getting pretty old, well, i think it is to YOU guys, to me it isn't Shellie and Dixie and Mara have crazy busy sechedules until June 6th (school year ends) So, looks like you guys are stuck w/me! (Oh, stop crying!)

Anywho, i was chatting w/a former cast mate from the 'Anne Of Green Gables' play i was in, She's awesome, nice to have been able to chat w/her again. Anyways, i just remembered something: 3 DAYS UNTIL THE FIRST BROADCAST!Woot!! Everybody on the teens view staff is totally excited and can't wait to be able to voice our opinions in our own way..well, not really our OWN way, i mean were not the only show on BTR..but..you get my point, It'll be awesome to get to know the listeners in the following shows and just get messages out, important ones about teenagers, such as:
If your teen seems down, sad, or upset ( if your teenager is a girl..its very likely it'll be all three...) and if you ask them "What's wrong? Do you want to talk about it?" and if they say "No" or "leave me alone" for petes sake people!!! LEAVE THEM ALONE!! I mean its true that sometimes they say that but actually want you to pry it out of them, they might say something more like "I'm okay" or "I'm fine, leave me alone" just saying that 'there okay' is a signal they want you to ask more about the situation. But if they raise their voice even once, yeah, believe or not, that means they want to be left alone and figure things out on their own, if its something so tragic they wanna inlist you for help, wait until they do just that. Most teens want to be left alone to think and just be by themselves, so please clingy parents: Leave them alone, most teens want to feel independant, they dont want you to know every aspect of their lives.

If your teenager goes to YOU to vent ( talk to you about something their angry or stressed about ), there letting out their feelings to you, there telling you a SECRET, so DO NOT:

1.Try and give them advice, sometimes teenagers just want somebody to go to to complain and just let everything out, if you give them advice i PROMISE that you will no longer be the one person they go to.

2.Tell ANYONE, Not even one of your friends who are parents as well, what your teenager told you, by venting to you there letting you know that your somebody they deeply TRUST, someone they can relax around, if you betray that trust by telling ANYBODY, once again, that one special position in their heart for you will eventaully be filled by someone else. They'll still luv ya..but wont trust you.

Oh! and heres a random hair tip i heard today (actually i read it): If you want fun waves or even curls, just get an empty spray bottle and fill it with a half cup of water and a tablespoon of SEA salt, regular salt wont work as good, if you have a bigger bottle, just add a tablespoon of sea salt per half cup (Duh. ) This works best if your hair becomes natrually wavy or curly when sprinkled with water.

Oh! and yet another random thing! for hilarious/cool signatures (for like your e-mail) then go to coolsig.com theres some hilarious signatures! But the 'religious' ones were mostly offensive...Anyway, thats all i gotta say to you guys! and remember to go to the teens view broadcast page to find out when our first broadcast is!

Sincerely,

Abby N. Warner

A case involving photos from Flickr used by CityTV raises questions about the issue of copyright and fair dealing.

The Torontoist reports that Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) found that CityTV had violated the Association of Electronic Journalists of Canada's RTNDA Code of (Journalistic) Ethics by using the photos of an alleged burglar that Joel Charlebois had posted to his Flickr account.

The full judgement explains that the issue not that CityTV had used the photos, saying that the CBSC "understands that, for the purpose of news reporting (and other matters not of relevance here), an exception exists to the restrictive demands of copyright protection."

CityTV lost because it did not credit the photos to Charlebois. The CBSC concluded that:

As a part of its coverage of the story, CP24 included three still photographs of the injured burglar without providing any credit to the photographer, whose identity was known to the broadcaster. By failing to provide that accreditation, the broadcaster has failed to honour the intellectual property rights of the photographer, contrary to the provisions of Article 11 of the RTNDA Code of (Journalistic) Ethics.

The implication of this ruling is that journalists may use material from Flickr or similar sites for news, without asking permission, provided they credit the source of the content.

I just want to let everyone know that I am aware of some difficulties you may face accessing the cPanel and have informed SmokyHosts of the trouble. As far as I know the main site is working for most of the world now, and if it doesn't work for you, get OpenDNS - http://www.opendns.com/

I realize that there are also a lot of other troubles with certain accounts working. Once I can rebuild my script to test, I can figure out which ones are experiencing trouble, and rectify them. The IP address is different, and many of the old scripts I was using are not built with multiple nodes in mind, so until they are modified I'm stuck with the primitive and laggy WHM interface. (Does it really have to load a list of all 1000 accounts just so I can modify ONE?)

So, we have:

Accounts not working

Scripts to fix this in need of modification

Deletion requests piling up without any page to handle them

Hundreds uninformed the site is back online

No easy way to make account modifications

Major inactivity at all levels

cPanel on IsMyWebsite.com not working at all

No explanation of current troubles

New accounts piling up

Nothing to spend credits on except advertising

Little motivation to place proper advertising

But other than this, everything is FINE!

So, as far as a plan for fixing this.

Broadcast a PM to explain all damages. Reconstruct the control panel and create all functionality necessary to handle future tasks. (4 days)

Use created scripts to assess and repair the situation universally. Email notification to all Advisors to announce this, which they should pass on to their clients. (4 days)

Upgrade the interface to include a delete account page. Recreate the script to provide a solution to just about all client-related problems, and improve relations through email. (4 days)

Upload e-books and other sales items onto reliable password-protected storage facility. Each will have a different password, and that is how items can be downloaded by purchasers. (4 days)

Any suggestions or further questions about this plan?

As you all probably already know, I'm was a mentor for the recent Apostrophe competition organised by DiGi. Seven winners were selected (you can see their works here) and they all won a chance to go on a filmmaking trip to Hanoi, Vietnam, with me as their all-knowledgeable and infinitely intellectual mentor!

The winners are:
Amir Rashid Othman
Fatul Ghazali
Johan Arif Mazlan
Nik Ahmad Faiz
Tan Zi Hao
Lesly Leon Lee
Azizan Abdul Rahim (DiGi internal winner)

The trip to Hanoi was great! Although documentary filmmakers and journalists would call it parachuting (they only had 3 days to make a film there!), the guys were gung-ho from the get-go! The picture above is of them being interviewed by ntv7.

Aside from filming, the organizers also arranged a slew of activities. We met up with a group of Vietnamese filmmakers at Red Bridge Productions. Getting their perspective on filmmaking was an eye-opener. The picture above is of me with Bui Kim Quy, a young Vietnamese documentary filmmaker.

We also met up with a a group of young Hanoi artists who shared with us stories of their struggle in creating art in their country. Respect goes out to them.

And staying true to the whole Apostrophe theme of 'Makan', we learnt how to cook traditional Vietnamese dishes from the beautiful Hanh An at Hidden Hanoi.

But nothing could beat the PHO BO (Vietnamese beef noodles) you get on the streets!!

So it really wasn't that hard for the guys to come up with a film (I'll try and post the final film they did... if I can get my hands on a copy... FATUL!!). A nice dinner screening was held for an audience which consisted of the Malaysian contingent and the Vietnamese filmmakers and artists.

There were a bunch of reporters (The Star, New Straits Times, ntv7 and China Press) who were following us around. So watch out for write-ups and TV coverage. In fact, ntv7's The Breakfast Show is running a 3-part package on Apostrophe starting yesterday and will continue till Friday. You can tune in from 8am to 10am.

I've got nothing interesting to write about JTV today. I spent hours with my head buried in some video and chat archives and that's it. Video archiving has been around since the beginning, but this chat archiving is new and it appears to date back to October. I think that's when JTV moved from Beta to general release. I noticed today that each channel has a chat history that anyone can access and it They sure do have a ton of data and video archives now, don't they?

I took the opportunity to not be on my feet and to see if I could get myself rested up to start another long week. I didn't go anywhere. I didn't do much of anything. I did watch some daytime television. Something I simply have not done in a year. It was refreshing. And the sun finally did come out today! After days of horrible weather, that big yellow ball in the sky made a beautiful appearance.

Just like Annie sang, there's always tomorrow. Rather than write a detailed post tonight I am going to attempt to rid myself of the monster headache that's plaguing me before my head falls off my shoulders. But first, below are a couple of photos of the DEElicious matzoh ball soup that was part of tonight's dinner.

It was the best part of my day. Just what the doctor ordered. It's "Kosher penicillin," and it works! :) This soup always has incredible healing powers. I'd like to bottle it for the world to cure what's ailing it.

Hello everybody! And how are ya'll?

Well i woke up to the pleasure of my mom freaking out because our power got shut off early this morning without warning, but no worries, since i'm on the computer its pretty obvious that we have our power back, my mom rushed to the bank and had to sell one of her bracelettes at the local pawn shop to get the money needed, but no worries, whatever the reason, God had his hand in this and somehow, this is part of his plan.

An article by Robin Parker in Broadcast this week about my The Radio Play's The Thing commission, a project I've been working on for two years now and which is just concluding its production phase.

I conceived it as an experiment in what I called (back in 2006) 'User Commissioned Content', which was sloppy short-hand for 'User-Generated Content where you give the User a few quid to help realise their vision' (for some studio time, a special actor, whatever). As it turned out I was applying a TV/video paradigm to the Radio medium where the gap between writer and producer/director is much wider so I adapted the project on the fly, eventually bringing in professional directors from other disciplines (TV, experimental theatre, etc.) to produce the radio dramas professionally but with the freshness of never having worked in the Radio medium.

The first fiction commissions for Channel 4's fledgling 4Radio venture are to debut online later this month when the broadcaster unveils four audio dramas.

The plays are all by new writers and will be directed by TV and theatre directors making their radio debuts. Neil Pearson and Hollyoaks actors Gerard McCarthy and Jennifer Biddall are among the cast.

The scripts were chosen from more than 1,000 submitted to an online competition launched last year off the back of C4 theatre talent search The Play's the Thing.

They were originally intended to be shared with OneWord before C4 pulled its funding from the station in December.

C4 now plans to use the web to launch the plays ahead of 4Radio's planned start at the end of this year and will also make them available as podcasts.

The 15-minute plays tackle heavyweight themes. Hospital doctor Andy Prendergast's To the Broad Shore explores euthanasia; DA McIllroy's The Interpreter features a confrontation between a Belfast police officer and a Chinese illegal immigrant; Stephen Todd's Proud Songster looks at the impact of genocide in Rwanda; and Caroline Gilfillan's The Colonel reflects on Chilean torture that took place in the 1970s.

All four are produced by Maud Hand of Maud Hand Productions and John Dryden of Goldhawk Productions. Hand has developed the project since January 2006. Dryden was invited latterly to come on board and is an experienced radio producer who has specialised in recording plays on location, most notably Radio 4's The Cairo Trilogy, starring Omar Sharif.

The 4Radio plays are also made out of the studio in locations around London.

Directors lined up include Noreen Kershaw, the Life on Mars actress who has turned to directing Coronation Street and Shameless, and Andrew Foster, the New Zealand theatre director who developed cult comedy Flight of the Conchords for HBO and directed the feature film Eagle vs Shark.

C4 new media commissioner Adam Gee has championed the plays at C4, developing the project in his earlier role as head of 4Talent.

Also involved have been writer Annie Caulfield, Radio Academy director Trevor Dann and Shameless creator Paul Abbott.

"Having created some content for 4Radio, much of it linked to established C4 shows, this is our first experiment in making radio drama sound different," said Gee.

Every year Television networks attempt to sell most of their advertising inventory up front, in what

Every year Television networks attempt to sell most of their advertising inventory up front, in what they've creatively named, "up fronts." That's all going to go down this week. Broadcast networks (cable is still a chaotic demon-orgy without a classy schedule) will roll out their new shows and wrangle the valuable toothpaste and deodorant dollars for the '08 - '09 season.

This year, they're nervous. In addition to the slow economy lowering ad budgets overall; this Internet thing has been getting a lot of hype, and Madison Ave. is starting to pay attention - at least a little. So, as everyone expects some ad dollars to flow into the endless sea of Internet (a drop in the ocean), is this the end of TV?

No, sit back down, silly venture-capitalists and google-maniacs.

The one thing I know, as fact, is that for most advertisers ROI on web advertising is non-existant. I don't care how many clicks your website gets, your advertisers are losing an average of 10% ... go ahead, do a survey. You'll get a 10% loss on digital advertising.

What I hadn't been able to put a finger on is why Web-Ads don't sell. Logically, they should out sell any other type of advertising by the Roker-Load (equivalent to five Al Rokers, denoted R). An ad that targets customers so specifically (search) and they can instantly purchase the item with a click ... it's an advertiser's dream, I know, I get it. In practice, however, 10% loss. WHY!?

Then I thought of the Pharohs. I like to be the Pharaoh - who doesn't like to be the Pharaoh?

The Pharaoh does not search for what he wants. The Pharaoh holds court and the best sheep, linens and tasty-Egyptian-skanks are selected and paraded in front of him. With a wave of his deified finger he refuses or accepts his choice.

While watching Network TV, I am the Pharaoh. It costs a lot to buy that 30 second spot on the Office so only the best in the land can afford to be there. I sit back, sip Pabst from my gilded goblet, one hand on my fine hound, and allow these merchants to present me with their goods while I await the next performer (I sure hope it's another ancient-skank).

Walking down to the market is for peasants. I don't want to pick through crowded stalls, with merchants yelling at me from every angle, and lepers selling Identity Theft Protection pulling at my pant legs. Even if I go to the tomato district, looking to buy tomatoes, half of them are going to be rotten or have some kind of ancient worm to eat my brain.

TV is for Pharaohs; the Internet is for peasants - and everyone wants to be a Pharaoh.

By Published: 12:55 BST This year's World Cup will hurl the mobile TV shop into the big time, say the analysts - a market that will be worth $300m over the course of the tournament. A redone report from Informa Telecoms & Media predicts football fans will command the square-eyed charge to mobile telly. Footie fanatics are set to line the mobile industry's pockets to the accordance of $300m during the World Cup, by tuning into streams of matches and packaged highlights. There will be 210 million watchers of the close-fisted screen by 2011. Despite a handful of publish trials, this year's footie fans are likely to sate themselves with content delivered by 3G networks.

As the store heats up post-football, however, broadcast mobile TV will take over and it's predicted there will be 210 million watchers of the tight-fisted screen by 2011. In five years' time, one in 10 mobiles is expected to give a broadcast receiver. While the numbers exceptional the mass market starting to switch on to mobile TV, it's still a drop in the ocean of unalloyed mobile users – expected to reach 1.2 billion in the same year. David McQueen, pre-eminent analyst at Informa and author of the report, told silicon.com: "We're still seeing the hockey-stick curve of [broadcast] take-up - we'll endure mass adoption between the Olympics and the next World Cup.

This World Cup is indubitably too early - it's being used as a showcase for unstationary TV." TV clip downloads have been a staple of mobile companies for some time but several are already banking on air as the way forward - O2, for example, is trialling a service with Nokia; Virgin Mobile is buying telly in wholesale from BT Movio; and even Qualcomm is in on the act, partnering with BSkyB. Each one will be using a competing standard, however.

Informa predicts the champion in the standards battle will be the Nokia-backed DVB-H, set to flog in the region of 63 million mobile telly devices, with MediaFLO next in tailback with sales of 14.5 million. McQueen added: "Samsung and LG and other Korean vendors have been honestly agnostic [about standards]. Some of the other manufacturers - Nokia, Sony Ericsson, BenQ-Siemens - have said DVB-H only for now.

I'm firm if DAB-IP or T-DMB take off, or Europe gets a sputnik system, they'll have to rethink that." Both DAB-IP and T-DMB are. Although the two standards can't hilt as many channels as DVB-H or MediaFLO, and are predominantly slower, the frequency and spectrum issues that dog the latter standards in the UK have been resolved.

Folks... I know it's been the pits with us being "off the air" for so long. I've been really itching to get it all going again. I was able to detach a bit and do some other things instead of focusing so hard on the station. This lets my brain cool off a bit and hopefully culture some more creativity and good ideas.

I am toying with some ideas. Perhaps changing the name of the station... Perhaps being all country except an 80's day on Mondays... Just throwing a few ideas around my head.

As always, let me know your thoughts and ideas.

A beautiful bundt cake using the Williams-Sonoma Mocha Chip cake mix and the Swirl bundt cake pan - both make it an absolute breeze to whip up this stunning dessert!

It's another Mother's Day and my boys are far away, but while I was baking a Mother's Day cake on Justopia.com tonight, they both called. The viewers had to take a back seat this time, but we got to talk and catch up with each other. By the time I was done, the cake was ready to come out of the oven and just like those sweet boys of mine, the cake was a masterpiece, a work of art!

\

I muted the broadcast and the boys and I chatted away. I should have had them call on Skype and we could have made it a 3 way conference call. Sheesh, what was I thinking? I suppose I wasn't.

I am going to keep this post short, but thought I'd post photos of the cake, fresh out of the oven.

A viewer has been asking me to bake a cake and I just did not feel like going to the market for flour, so I picked up a Bundt Cake mix at the store before coming home from work tonight and whipped it up on the broadcast. It is the Mocha Chip mix and I can't wait to dive into it. I don't think I will make a glaze. I like the sharp edges of the cake. It has an architectural look to it.

Beautiful, no?

I think I'll take it to work tomorrow, although if the rain, wind and cold keep up like this that won't be happening. I have a great Wilton domed cake carrier, but it's just not worth the trouble in this horrendous weather.

* Catatan dari “Inhouse Training” Fajri FM Bogor
SABTU lalu (10/5) saya “absen

Yakni, .... (Rahasia dong ah... he he ).

Soal teknik siaran, standar aja.

Ceria! Humoris!

Amin... ! Siapa nyusul ngundang saya neeh...? he he... Wasalam. (*)

Well there is a new radio station in town. Ok maybe not in town, but within the whole world. It

Well there is a new radio station in town. Ok maybe not in town, but within the whole world. It's called KBC Radio. With Shows on Channel 12902 on Ubroadcast, KBC has new shows including Tech2do live, The Chris Pirillo Show, and KBC News.

Here is a bit more about KBC:

The Kanwell Broadcasting Corporation(KBC) First started in 2004, as a radio station on ubroadcast. Yes it was indeed us at the dial of 632. It was a sports radio station, that caught very few peoples eyes. With only two shows every week, it was not grabbing the attention KBC was hoping for.
In late 2006, KBC Radio shut down due to the insufficient work of the station. The Owner Bradley Bradwell was also going through personal difficulties including the death of several family members.
In January 2008, there was a rebirth. Bradley Bradwell was ready to go, but this time he was going to reshape the whole station and get the most qualified speakers on his station. This includes Chris Pirillo, and Brad Roberts. Yes KBC was now a station with the best speakers of news, technology, sports, entertainment, and much more. We are dedicated to bringing you the latest in these subjects. With a new list of shows including the KBC hourly news, KBC is as big as it has ever been.

If you would like more information on The New KBC radio go to Their Website, and learn more about their shows.

KBC also has fee advertising. If you are interested in Advertising on KBC radio email me at bradley@bradwelltv.com.

KBC is also looking for Talk Shows, so if you are interesting in having your own show, email the address above. There are only a few spots left.

Anyway, Hope you enjoy the new Station in town.

Ello My Wordpress Peeps! Abby Again!

Most likely by Monday Shellie or Mara will type-in to you guys, and in the meanwhile, i have some story's on how awful a cook i am! For instance, one time i was trying to make breakfast and....well....Did you know that bacon can explode?? Or how easily it is to set butter and oil on fire? What about how easy it is to misunderstand a chocolate chip recipe and end up making enough cookie dough for 10 dozen cookie's??? Yessiree folks, i cannot cook anything other than noodles!

So, just reminding you guys to just explore TTV's blog because we've added some cool pages and added some funny vid's from youtube! I'm on the phone w/Mara right now, and here's what she has to say to ya'll!:

"Hey everyone! Its too bad i wont actually be with Dixie, Shellie and Abby but it'll still be awesome to host from California and get to talk to you guys! Thanks so much for being patient after all this time as we have tried to get a good first broadcast date, God Bless!"--Mara Jade Wilson

Okay, now i gotta help Mara set up a gmail account so i'll type to you guys later!

Sincerely,

Orwell wrote in 1946, "a mass of Latin words fall upon the facts like soft snow"; that snow doesn't stick on television, which always homes in on the dead, allowing no excuses.

Edmund Wilson points out, combined to simplify American prose, demanding "lucidity, precision, terseness"; wars honed down still more the language of those many writers - journalists as well as novelists and poets - who have struggled to convey the horror, paradoxically, by understating it, rendering it with photographic coolness and exactitude. Through such unflinching reporting, it might be argued, the best war correspondents, and writers like Hemingway, Remarque, Cèline, and Mailer, have aspired, avan l'image, to replicate in words the bleak and graphic vision of TV.

It is, in fact, the great myth of television that the medium somehow gives us an immediate impression, conveying not images, but actualities; and its coverage of war is supposedly the most compelling example of such supreme truthfulness. This pretense of objectivity makes TV'smany actualdistortions - whether inherent or imposed - all the more insidious, because their camouflage is perfect, fooling not only the viewer, but even most of thosewho work within the medium, naively claiming to reveal "the way it is."

The TV newsman comforts us as John Wayne comforted our grandparents, by seeming to have the whole affair in hand. This hero functions as the guardian of our enclosed spectatorship. Therefore, when we see a newsman shot to death, as happened in Guyana and El Salvador, we react with an especial horror, because we realize that TV is not, in fact, immune to the events which it observes, but that the protective apparatus can be shattered; and if the medium does not confer invincibility on those who manage it, it surely can't safeguard its helpless viewers.

But that camera can'T record "realtragedy," because death has no finality, no poignancy, on television. Because the medium cancels out the living presence of its figures, homogenizing all identity, whether individualal or collective, it can't restore the impact of a single loss, or express the decimation of a people. Since no one seems to live on television, no one seems to die there. And the medium's temporal facility deprives all terminal moments of their weight.

But let's set aside all these distortions - the shrinkage, the implicit distancing, the illusory containment, the imperceptible cloud of ideology - and grant that TV does tend to present, as Goodman puts it "intrinsically antiwar" ? There is no reason to think so; and this belief in television's salutary bias is not only unfounded, but intolerant, positing only one morally acceptable response. To assert, with Ellen Goodman, that on TV "the sides are not divided into good guys and bad guys, but into aggressors and victims," is to say that the viewer, when he sits down to watch TV, is suddenly cleansed of all personal identity, all preconception, and can now apprehend the conflicts of the world from an exalted, unimpeachable standpoint, seeing reality through God's own eyes, or Ellen Goodman's. Far from conducing to a world of peace, such "objective" certainty is probably more dangerous than any archaic faith, because it reflects, and has at its disposal, the most enormous system of technology that has ever choked the world.

For not even the most sophisticated Sony has a perfect moral faculty built into it. We usually see what we want to see on television - and TV complicates this tendency by helping to determine that original desire. If it thinks that we want war, it sells us war. The medium can easily circumvent the pacific influence (if any) or its graphic images. Like radio or the yellow press, TV, too, can beat the drum. "Granted, television helped get us out of Vietnam," writes Michael Arlen, "but it also helped march us in." And even if the medium weren't influential, the images per se dictate no automatic pacifism. Confronted with those pictures of the slaughtered Palestinians, a Phalangist viewer would surely smile at seeing all those dead "aggressors";

Truth is indeed the first casualty in any war, and our journalists have never been less honest in this sentimental era.

In a TV Guide in 2000, Dan Rather, asked what event he'd most like to report, came up with this: "Good evening, from CBS News. Peace and good will toward all living things prevails [sic] everywhere on earth and throughout the cosmos."

Now what would Dan Rather do, deprived of war and ill will in the cosmos ? His utopian pronouncement, as frightening as it is disingenuous, does not reflect the sentiments of a living human being, but rather the contradictory longings of the medium that has consumed him. TV has us automatically deplore or ridicule all anger, fear, political commitment, deep belief, keen pleasure, exalted self-esteem, tremendous love; and yet, while making all these passions seem unnatural, the medium persistently dwells on their darkest consequences, teasing the house-bound spectator with hints of that intensity that it has helped to kill. In fact, despite its pleas for universal calm, what TV depends upon is something else; brutal wars abroad, and an anxious peace in every living room.
