On the Burlington Vermont waterfront is Burlington Bay Market and Cafe. As the name suggests is a hybrid fish market, cafe, tourist shop, and mini beer bar. I actually haven't ordered beer there, but they have an impressive back deck which I imagine goes well with beer.

[caption id="attachment_344" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Burlington Bay Market and Cafe - Burlington Vermont"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_346" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Burlington Bay Market and Cafe - Crab Cake Sandwich"][/caption]

This was a poor shot, it was a very sunny day.

The crab cake is hand-made pan fried, nice toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, and slightly spicey sauce. The sandwich comes with a slice of lemon, I recommend using it a little acid helps. I wish the remoulade sauce has a little heat to it, but this sandwich is nice much better than some deep fried crab cakes I've tried. The sandwich was $7.76 with tax.

[caption id="attachment_347" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Burlington Bay Market and Cafe - Small Maple CreeMee"][/caption]

Ah Maple CreeMees a great Vermont-y treat. Real maple syrup is very prevalent in this saccharine confection. If you like maple syrup and have tried a maple creemee (aka soft serve in other parts of the US) you need to. A small was $2.22, also the "EAT-IT ALL" cone was nice and fresh. So what about that view?

[caption id="attachment_349" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Echo Center - Burlington Vermont"][/caption]

The Echo Center is a cool museam of Lake Champlain, if you haven't been.

[caption id="attachment_350" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Burlington Bay Market and Cafe - Burlington Vermont View"][/caption]

So in conclusion if do get lunch @ BBMC, sit on the back deck and bring shades.

I just got back from what I was taking to calling a writing sabbatical, but more turned into a wander and sleep fest in Victoria, BC.

A distinct lack of motivation and desire to want to do anything. Maybe too much time thinking but that’s how I roll I spose. I really wanted to get more songs done, or should I say, it would have been cool IF I had. But the thing with writing is if I want it done, I have to sit down, focus and do it. Its not divine inspiration. Its intentional and specific…to whatever it is.

That may sound like it would steal the creative side of it, but if I don’t operate like that, I don’t get anything done. There’s always the songs that just COME up, but 90% of the time I have sat down to write them knowing I would write something. Now… there are the songs, that creep up on me, right before I drift off to sleep. And I’m so convinced that the melody I’m humming as I fall into my slumber will be with me until morning. How could it not, I’ve been humming it while I try to sleep and it wont go away. But, inevitably… when I wake next to my piles of laundry and a guitar case, I realize that the great feeling of that song and the song itself are gone.

This happens all the time. Ever since I began writing songs. My best ideas come before I sleep. This particular song had three parts, a lazy three-part harmony chorus based somewhere in B-minor. The easy save would be for me to sit up and start playing it before I crash…I just don’t. I give myself sympathy for being tired or that because I’m on a holiday or maybe that song sounds like something else, I should just leave it for morning.

Now what kind of “musician” does that. It bugs the hell out of me but I guess being lazy is being human. And all success is derived from direct action. The balance is there somewhere.

The Sandalwood Project (TSP) is an sociopolitical comedy animation story by FireNation Media Studio.

The Sandalwood Project (TSP) is an sociopolitical comedy animation story by FireNation Media Studio.

The basic story plot follows the main character Muktub; a young immigrant Somali trying to find his way in the small state of Vermont in North East United States. The location is Jericho City; a fictional place based on the greater Burlington area (South Burlington, Winooski, Colchester, etc).

Muktub is a 16 year old young man who has retro grade amnesia after a run in with a herd of cows while riding on a dirt-bike. He moves in with small Quebecois farming family who just happen to be Jewish. He is often hassled by the other Somalis for this. On top of these he has to relearn Somali and the Somali culture while at the same time trying to rediscover himself.

Muktub create this plan called "The Sandalwood Project". "The Sandalwood Project" is in Muktub words "the campaign to save the world and set the people free". During the entire show it is never reviled what exactly the world must be saved from, although it is hinted. Basically the "project" is actually a company that is a "Jack-of-all-Trades" and will do just about anything to get by. In the process they get into some thick political situation that have major social ramifactions.

Political Situation:

The federation of United States of America is disintegration due to a serious of internal and external issues. The main one beginning the draining of US power by the continual use of the Military Industrial Complex and not enough attention is being paid to domestic issues, the other one is the collapse of the US market due to transfer of wealth from lower and middle class to wealthy elites; effectively eliminating the middle class, the last one is the aggressive invasion on Civil liberty to its own citizens to the point where the US resembles a police state. The collapse of the US market has brough many other countries around the world to their knees especially the neigboring states of Mexico and Canada.

Vermont Situation:

Due to the fall of the Federation states such as Vermont are trying to stabilize themselves. Vermont is try to do this through political and social centralization, in a sense revillagization and planned developments. The political turmoil has brought massive crime waves and incredible amount of refugees from war zones such as Boston and New York City. Also the Federal Government still in DC has called the separatist actions of the North East states along with much of the rest of the United States including California, Haiwii, and Alaska "Mass High Treason" and has forceably been trying to restablish control. On the state level there is take of forming either a federation of a conferderacy with Northern New York, Quebec (due to the US deintergration much of Canada is turmoil), Maine, and New Hampshire. However there is much disagreement there has been scrimages between all states.

Themes:

Omin: The Dirt Bike: The name Omin (often pronounced Oman) for the dirt-bike is short for ominous because Muktub continually claims that it is trying to kill him and he often talks to/ about it as if it was a person. Basically its a run down piece of shit but it gets him around.

Vermont Life: General stereotypical Vermont ideas are often dipicated and mocked (i.e. getting run over by a herd of cows)

Champlain Orchards offerings are good, the cinnamon / sugar coating works well, however I prefer my cider donuts straight-up. These also are not crispy, but were very moist and have some cider flavor.

$.89 per seems pricey since these donuts are smaller than "standard" donut size. I'm not aware of another cider donut vendor in town, so to get your fix head to City Market.

For $2.70 you get either Mckenzie Bacon, Mackenzie sausage, veggie sausage, with egg and your choice of cheese on a toasted English muffin. While this is a bit pedestrian, I sometimes crave a little bacon in the morning and don't have time to do a little cooking in the morning, and this sandwich it cooked well. The bacon and muffin are crisp, the egg is not over cooked with a hint of butter, I like to order Swiss with mine.

Final note: HSM used to carry Dinky Donuts, but I guess DD flew south (like the geese) to Middlebury.

It has been a busy two weeks since I've last posted. I've been going to classes, playing halo, hanging out with Ric, shooting a music video, and doing homework simultaneously. I've been down to southern Vermont to the Tunbridge Worlds Fair and to just hang out with friends which has helped transition into school. While I was there I began experimenting with my camera and one of my favorite photos from the experiment follows. It's called "A King Among Pawns," I've had some suggestions so I'll reshoot it if I get a chance.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="540" caption="taken with PentaxK200D by Matt Hovey"][/caption]

Continuing about the photos, I have a good number of INSOMNIA taken, still looking for input from you. Trying to find time to take more but its the week to get the music video done so I'm feeling swamped. We just filmed the toughest scene left, so its only a couple more, then into the editing room, getting excited and anxious to see the final product. Wish I could give you more detail, but I WILL say it pushes the boundaries of all people involved and should cause some commotion...

Other than the stuff on campus, I went up to Montreal with Ric last weekend to go to a Jay Brannan performance. He plays the guitar, currently out of New York, it was his first time in Montreal and it was amazing. I wasn't much into his sound until the concert and I haven't been able to stop listening to him. Got to spend a couple hours hanging out and holding Ric as we sat on the steps in a packed lounge venue... perfect seats...

Even though it has been a great two weeks traveling around, spending time all over the place, always doing something different, it's great being back in my room, around my four other roommates, kicking ass in Halo 3. I have a week to get myself back in order before it will get busy again with the video wrapping up, Ric back in town, and another week of class. My desk is kind of unorganized at the moment, I need to utilize these drawers more... I love being in this room, we have prime real estate. The view from our room "Day Till Dusk" can be seen larger by clicking the image below...

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="taken with PentaxK200D by Matt Hovey"][/caption]

Have a great weekend and I'll keep you updated on the video/photo/etc. Please give me some feedback/suggestions on INSOMNIA

Family Photo :] Aren't we cute?! Haha... I finally wore my Sass&Bide dress I got awhile ago... Conclusion? I love it but it was ridiculously expensive and I probably shouldn't have gotten it. Hahaha... but, I did and I love it :] So not regrettable. Altho it's hard to breathe in after eating and drinking so much.... took me like a good 15-20 minutes to feel a little more relaxed after digesting in the carride home.

My close second choice for espresso is the Blue Plate Ceramic Cafe on College St in Burlington Vermont. The main business is a pay to paint your own pottery studio / cafe, the espresso here is an undiscovered secret, until now!

[caption id="attachment_303" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Blue Plate Ceramic Cafe - Double Shot"][/caption]

As far a caffeine content, this espresso is the winner also the crema is plentiful. This Blue Plate Ceramic Cafe potion is a little more bitter than Speeder & Earl's shot, but this may be related to the strength.

The espresso is a little pricey at $2.55 (leading to its relegation to second choice), however the quality is excellent and the $/caffeine ratio is also good. Early coffee drinkers be warned, BPCC doesn't open before 8am and is closed on Tuesdays.

[caption id="attachment_304" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Blue Plate Ceramic Cafe - Brownie"][/caption]

Crispy micro top layer is a sign of a good brownie.

[caption id="attachment_305" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Blue Plate Ceramic Cafe - Brownie (bottom)"][/caption]

This brownie also has milk-chocolate chips interspersed in the moist fudge-y interior, Finally the pan-touching edge is chewy but not crispy.

Could this be simply brownie mix with chocolate chips stuff in it, baked correctly? Yes. Is this delicious? Yes. Brownies are one of those odd ball foods, where a mix will often times produce a superior version than a from scratch rendition. Either way, real or boxed, these brownies are good. I think it's $1.75 for these choco-blocks.

Almost a year ago I posted about some of my favorite wings at Reuben James in Burlington Vermont. Unfortunately they don't also have free burgers, but they do have inexpensive ones.

[caption id="attachment_291" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Reuben James - Burlington, Vermont"][/caption]

I have a cold, so I ordered some chicken noodle(tortellini) soup.

[caption id="attachment_293" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Reuben James - Chicken Tortellini Cup"][/caption]

The soup was decent, nice chunks of celery, some onion, chicken pieces and plain tortellini. I recently slurped some MSG infused classic Campbell's Condensed chicken noodle, RJ's broth was noticeable MSG free. However it's not house made as confirmed by the staff, I'm guessing the soup is a Sysco product based on evidence of Sysco boxes in the kitchen. Also of note: locally made Westminster crackers come with.

[caption id="attachment_294" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Reuben James - Cheese Burger"][/caption]

Reuben James is open for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays, and they usually have a few sandwiches "on special". Lately they've had their normally $5.50 cheese burger for $4.00 (come with chips + pickle). The cooking temp was more medium-well then medium, but it still had a touch of pink, and the burger is large maybe 1/2 lb affair. Djon mustard is available on request and the corn-mealed bun is fresh. Swiss cheese at no charge rounds out this bargain sandwich.

I rate the also inexpensive burger at VPB as slightly tastier and ethically sound (local beef), but in these pocket-pinching times a $4 cooked to order 1/2 lb. burger is a welcome lunch choice. Oh and the cup of soup was $3.

IHOP-AC was in the newspaper this morning! Some journalist wrote an article about the "House of Prayer" that is coming to downtown Burlington. He didn't really interview anyone, so some of his facts aren't quite accurate.

Click here to read the article.

We are not a church. We are a ministry. David Gordon isn't our "pastor" he is our director. Also, International House of Prayer in Kansas City has no idea who we are. They aren't our "headquarters" but we are modeling our house of prayer after theirs in many ways. Everyone who is a part of IHOP-AC goes to another church. This isn't our church home. Because its not a church. We are a house of prayer. There are 6 of us who are full-time intercessory missionaries. This is our occupation and our passion. We desire to create a 24/7 dwelling place for God in Alamance County!

I just wanted to clear a few of the facts up. In case anyone reading the article looks us up on line and wants to find out more. If you are part of a church, coming to the House of Prayer does not make you a member. We just want to be open for anyone at anytime to come and worship and commune with God!

STOP IN anytime! We are currently located at Life Fellowship Church off of exit 150 on I-85. We will not be moving into the downtown building until construction is done.

Industry is alive and well in Burlington, Ontario especially as this plant that is always smoking when you go over the Burlington Skyway Bridge QEW Highway on your way to Niagara Falls.

There were several different areas over the water with rushing smoke and I was constantly shifting the camera on the tripod to capture the different effects caused by the smoke with long exposures. This rush created an interesting pattern and I loved how the sky blended in with the smoke.

I've got a couple of really exciting things to post about today!

My best friend, Allison, is having a little girl!

Her baby is due Feb. 3rd, and she found out that she is having a girl! I am so excited and happy for her! I can't wait to see Payton!

My friend Tiffany is having her baby, Isabella Grace somewhere in the next 48 HOURS!

She is not due until Oct. 9th, but she is dialated and the doctors said today that the baby should be here within 48 hours! She will have her beautiful baby, Izzy. I can't wait! Babies are so amazing and a gift from God!

IHOP-AC OFFICIALLY HAS A BUILDING!!!!

Tonight we were accepted by the city council in Burlington, NC to make residence in the building that is in our downtown area! I am so excited about this! It is an amazing building! And it is only a 7 min. walking distance from my apartment! Which means.....NO MORE DRIVING! I am walking or biking. We have a TON of construction work to do before we can offically be open and in the new prayer room, but we are that much closer! God is so amazing! Woohoo!

Praise HIM!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the town of Burlington, MA, (population: 22,800/location: 12miles NW of Boston) cheerleading is in their blood. Burlington is a town where cheerleading trumps football, camaraderie among neighbors is in the town’s bylaws and national trophies are a rite of passage. So it was no surprise when more than 200 devoted family members and friends of The Burlington Patriot’s Pop Warner Cheerleaders packed the house at a Special Private Screening of “Blood, Sweat and Cheers” at the Burlington AMC Theater.

After spending nearly two years as a surrogate “Burlingtonian,” there was no doubt in my mind the town would rally together once again in support of the Burlington Pop Warner Cheerleaders, but for a theater to be standing room only, early on a Saturday morning–when cheerleading, football, and other fall sports are on the already jam packed schedule of Burlington families– was unbelievably gratifying to a filmmaker.

Perhaps the most touching moment was when Dave Colangelo, President of Burlington Pop Warner looked over to see the entire Junior Midget team of 2007 (the stars of Blood, Sweat and Cheers) holding hands as they announced the winners at the Pop Warner National Competition up on the screen. While the team obviously knew the outcome of the competition, they relived that moment with same unity that carried them through their competing season. The bonds these girls developed over years of cheering together are clearly unbreakable.

There is something unique and special about a small-town and the great lengths they go to to support their neighbors and community. It was an incredible experience to be let into the homes and lives of this tight-knit community and a true pleasure to share their struggles, triumphs and passion for cheerleading on the big screen. I thank the town of Burlington for entrusting their story with us!
