- Regina Spektor (Reading time with Pickle)

That prickly feeling I get in the tip of my nose is strong right now, making my eyes water. It's a little disconcerting, but overall It's nice, because I haven't felt it in awhile. Who knows why it's acting up. Life is looming, apparently. Thank God, I'm getting bored over here... Three day weekends (you're not as jealous as you think) are starting to wear thin on me.

I spend three days a week keeping the dog company, and I wish I'd been able to afford summer classes. Or at least had reliable transport, so as to drive to them at Cuesta.

I feel like I'm getting some insight into what the life of a 1950's housewife would have been. No wonder they got pregnant asap: they needed babies to combat boredom and loneliness.

Not that I'm suggesting I want a baby. What I want is a project, preferably one that involves other human beings who want to talk to me about interesting things. Things like color and materiality and site. Or maybe fonts. I love fonts.

Oh my.

Cabin fever.

I am quickly turning out to be one of the weirdest people I know.

I woke up at 8:30am today and did my usual business online- checked gmail, checked facebook, and before I knew it at 8:40am I logged into work. I always knew I was a type-A crazy workaholic but I think this is getting ridiculous. In the three days that I've been unemployed I've logged into work everyday to check on the status of my event, and to just see if anything needed my attention. It doesn't stem from a lack of faith in the rest of the people who've taken over my tasks, but more of an inability to just LET GO...

I remember waking up on Tuesday morning, Day 1 at 7:45 when my usual work alarm rang and feeling a sense of uselessness and helplessness at not having anything to do. The rest/day off was nice and much-needed but by the end of the day I had cabin fever and ended the day feeling pretty effing irritable at myself and the world. I'm a big fan of trashy tv and within a couple of hours of watching brain-numbing-mindless reruns I wanted to throw something at the TV.

"Why not get out of the apartment then?" I'm sure you must be thinking.

With unemployment comes a lack of funds and in a city like NY, a lack of funds really handicaps you from actually doing a lot of things. It's unfortunate but true- NY is a city that never sleeps and where there's always something to do, but most of those things cost money. As someone trying to make her savings last a little longer, I've noticed that it's just best to avoid temptation because I know I will most likely blow it all away and I'll be starving for the rest of my stay. To put it in another way, shopping for me is like going to a strip club for guys- you know you really shouldn't be throwing money on something that gives you such a short term high but you just can't help it!

Anyway, Day 2 was marked with my trying to be helpful and run errands for Chris. A mission that inevitably failed because what he needed was out of stock wherever I went. Chris, who is thankfully a traditional Pinoy boy treated me out to lunch for my troubles and from his downtown office, I got a chance to walk around and see the much hyped about "waterfalls" at South Street Seaport. NY pride aside, that thing just looks like an overpriced faucet under a bridge. After a couple of hours walking under the sun I ended up heading back home and passing out. Wonderful.

Hello, Day 3. Someone please save me, I'm going nuts.

A ver... dioxxxx...

All I was planning on doing when I ventured out this morning was head to the bank and then Tim Hortons to grab an early lunch. After all, it started out as a rainy Sunday morning...

5-1/2 hours, over 200 kms & 175 photos later, I returned home. I L.O.V.E. impromptu roadtrips like that. A really bad case of cabin fever hit me once I left my flat, and I just ran with the escape. Most of the photos are of the same thing - using different settings, etc. I've uploaded 10 of them to flickr and the rest will come this week.

Here are some of the reasons why it's so much fun to discover Alberta. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Enjoy!!!

MEATBALLS (1979)
Bill Murray is Tripper, a summer camp counselor of the type of misfits you’d expect in a movie like this. Chris Makepeace is the friendless dork he mentors into running a foot race in the annual Olympiad against a rival camp of rich kids. That’s as close as Meatballs gets to a linear plot, but you won’t mind. Probably the most charming of this small sub-genre of late-70s/early-80s summer camp movies (parodied with dead-on snarky affection in Wet Hot American Summer). There’s a surprising lack of raunchiness here and even the sex jokes are of the 8th grade variety. Meatballs is deliciously dated with its tube socks and short shorts– it’s amazing what passed for a good-looking teenager in 1979. Every misfits-overcome-alphas cliché is present especially in the last half hour. But it’s all pleasant enough and the pasteurized comedy is given a welcome edge by Murray in one of the loosest performances of his early career. Director, Ivan Reitman, would go on to direct Murray in Ghostbusters four years later. And check out that groovie title song by Rick Dees(!) Three odious sequels followed (one featuring a cute alien for chrissake!), but watch this back to back with Sleepaway Camp, the aforementioned WHAS and any of the first four Friday the 13th movies and you’ve got one heck of a retro-summer-camp film festival. A Meatballs remake is announced for 2010.
***

CABIN FEVER (2003)
There were rumblings that this was going to be the next great horror movie. They’d said that about House of 1000 Corpses the year before and that sucked too. A flesh-eating virus ravages a bunch of unlikable college characters that clearly deserve it. Without a single genuine scare, it is content to go for the shocking gross-out instead – There’s at least one really great one. Every plot point is convoluted and the characters only do implausibly stupid things. This movie makes the mistake of thinking it’s way smarter than it is, but it really should just get over itself. It nods its head at so many horror movies that it’s practically having a seizure. It also sports the worst ending of any movie the Gill Man saw in 2003. There’s tons of gore but that doesn’t save it from being a pretty joyless movie-watching experience.
*

FRIDAY THE 13TH: PART 3 (1982)
Jason finally puts on the hockey mask for Part 3 which was originally released in 3D during America’s very short lived re-interest in it in the early 80s. At the time of this writing, no one has bothered to release any of these movies (Jaws 3, Amityville 3 or Spacehunter, to name a few) in 3D on DVD. A shame really, especially in this case where it could significantly up the appeal of one of my favorite installments in this otherwise over-appreciated series. The plot is what you’d expect, but the killings are a bit more jarring and the plot, slightly more coherent (future installments would blow that, however). Tracey Savage, who gets a nice nudie shower scene in before her inevitable demise, became the local weather girl on our CBS affiliate in Dayton, where I grew up – a fact that gave me a considerable charge at the time.

SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983)
The fact that this is still considered a Friday the 13th knockoff gets me riled. It might not exist without the success of that franchise, but it’s got far more to offer than any entry of that tired series. Little Angela is sent off to summer camp with her cousin and people start dying. Most of the kills have it coming, but there’s no masked stalker to be found here. This killer is left to the last truly terrifying few moments before the credits. A guy is killed by bees on the crapper. A bitch counselor is assaulted with her curling iron. (Eesh. Don't ask.) There’s a pretty nifty bow and arrow effect. There’s even more to love when you consider the authentic 80’s camp-movie feel, the outrageously dated wardrobe and the sublime performance of young Felissa Rose as Angela. But the climax is the real attraction. As a twist ending, it may set a precedent of sorts. As a shocking image, it’s a doozy. As an 80’s horror film, Sleepaway Camp is a classic. Or it should be.
***

SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2 ( 1988 )
Where Sleepaway Camp played it campy but relatively straight, it’s sequels decided to go for lame comedy and cheap-looking gore (but plenty of it, to be fair). The story of the first film is alluded to and Angela is back – but it’s not OUR Angela. It’s Pamela Springsteen (yes, Bruce’s sister) and her shrill performance as the camp counselor from hell is lame and a disgrace as a follow-up to the first film. Regardless, this (along with 1989’s Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland) has a fair share of fans. There’s more nudity in addition to the extra blood, but it’s wrapped around a whole lot of nothing. Sleepaway Camp IV was never finished but unused footage of it is available in the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit box set put out in 2003, sold exclusively by Best Buy (?!). Return to Sleepaway Camp from the original’s director was announced in 2004.

It is my very favorite Muppet song, and is, if I dare say, incredibly addictive. My favorite part:

I'd like to get my hands on whoever wrote this script.

Click play and enjoy the randomness of "Cabin Fever".

We here at Boundary Bay are pleased to announce that our Cabin Fever claimed a silver medal in the Strong Ale category at the Brewer’s Association World Beer Cup (WBC) 2008. The WBC is the largest beer competition in the world. It evaluates beers from around the globe and recognizes the most outstanding beers being produced in the world today. The World Beer Cup is a category driven competition meaning there are strict parameters like color, hop character and alcohol content that must be met for a beer to be submitted to a judging category. The World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of 129 beer judges from 22 countries. This year, there were nearly 3,000 entries from over 600 breweries in 58 countries. Participation has increased from previous years with this year’s competition including almost 700 more beers than entries from 2006. This competition is serious to the point that medals are not given unless there are entries that exemplify the exceptional qualities the judges are looking for. Thus, beers are not simply judged to be the best of those entered, but simply…the best. Period.

Anthony Stone (one of our brewers), Ed Bennett (the owner) & Brian Bendix (our Seattle area distributor) traveled to San Diego to attend the Brewer’s Conference and to bring home Cabin Fever’s medal. While there, they had a unique opportunity to meet brewers from around the world to trade ideas and trouble shoot with. They gathered information on new equipment and new ideas for our up and coming brewery in Ferndale. They also got to sit in on discussions about sustainability and ways to lower the impact on our environment such as using energy more efficiently. One of the things Anthony likes best about the international competition is seeing first hand the differences between American and European brewing. He observed that, in general, European breweries often focused on preserving traditions and continuing the rich history that their beers or their breweries have embodied. Being a “new” brewing culture, North America (and especially the West Coast) has the freedom to be creative in their brewing and to break with tradition. Anthony appreciates the ability to always be changing and trying new ways to make the beer exactly what they want it to be.

So easy, even I could follow it. It's called Baby Flap Cap from Cabin Fever. I bought mine from my LYS but if yours doesn't carry it, this is the place to buy it. It took me just about one night each to make these. One for GrandDolly and one for GrandDolly's cousin. I used James G. Brett's Marble yarn -- very nice to work with and very soft for the money.

We begin in 1955, with Emily Locke swinging and hand-jiving all over her bedroom. When her mom walks in and asks her what she's doing, Emily says that she's going out with HIM, and that they'll probably spend the entire night in an opium den fornicating each other. Upset, her mom chases her out into the rain, where Emily is promptly mowed down by a Buick, made by patriotic Americans in the good ole' U.S. of A. Even though cars in he fifties were made of cast iron and bricks, Emily escapes with only a few cuts and bruises and a baby. Whaaaaa??

Flash forward. In the jungle, comical antics ensue as Locke, Ben and Hurley just can't seem to find Jacob's cabin. "Hey, I was following you!" "Well if you're in front, and we're following from behind--" "But I thought you... oh boy!" Ben pokes Hurley's eyes who slaps Locke's bald head.

Keamy and the rest of the Joes make it back to the freighter, albeit a little worse for wear. When the doc asks what happened to a member of their team, Keamy says that Lostzilla attacked them and ripped his guts out, then he puts a gun to his head and tells him to put his guts back in. When Captain House comes on deck, Keamy puts a gun to his head and asks if it was him who sold out their team to Ben.

House: You're obviously suffering from some sort of delusional parasitosis.

Then he twirls his cane and pops a vicodin. He takes Keamy down to see Michael. When Keamy puts a gun to his head, Michael says, "I was just trying to help mah boy." Sayid uses this opportunity to steal a boat and head back to the island.

In the jungle, Locke wakes up to the sound of someone chopping wood. Exploring a little bit, he finds Horace, the hippy-dippy guy who welcomed Ben to the island right after he graduated from Hogwarts.

Horace: You got to find me Lock--ah dammit I'm bleeding.

Locke leads Ben and Hurley to the mass grave where Ben dumped all the Dharma folks, including his Uncle Rico, who Ben killed after Rico threw a steak in his face. Locke jumps into the pile of rotting corpses like it ain't no thang and rummages around until he finds a treasure map marking the location of Jacob's cabin.

In his flashbacks, we find that Locke is some sort of wunderkind who's been watched his entire life by the likes of Richard Alpert and Desmond Mobay. Alpert, because he thinks Locke may be their next leader. He visits a nine-year-old Locke, and spreads a few things out on the table in front of him. Included are a knife, a Playboy magazine, a Bible, a pack of cigarettes, a ottle of Crown Royale, and some fireworks. Alpert asks Little Johnny Locke which of these things belong to him. His answer is a little depressing.

Little Johnny Locke: I like tohtles.

Desmond Mobay, because he's needs Locke's help after killing an undercover cop.

Locke: Look, I just want to go back to my room.

Mobay: Locke mon, 'ya gotta get me in good wid de bad'guys, 'yafeelmee brudda?

Finally, our heroes find Jacob's cabin. When Locke goes inside, he finds Jacob who promptly answers all his questions about the island. Oh wait, that never happened. Jacob's cabin is under new management, namely Christian Shephard and Claire, who's just happy that she finally has something to do. Locke gets right to the point.

Locke: How do we get our hands on more of that ranch dressing Hurley likes so much?

Christian tells Locke that he's an idiot. When he finally emerges from the cabin, Ben can hardly contain himself. "Did he tell you what we're supposed to do?" he asks.

Locke: He did.

Ben: Well?

Locke: He wants us to move the island.

Ben/Hurley: Here we go again!

I feel unmoored these days. I have major projects to work on: a collection of thesis essays and finding a full-time job. Yet I Can. Not. Focus. I'm experiencing nearly debilitating bouts of wanderlust, but I leave for Texas and Mexico soon, so perhaps that will satisfy the lust for a while. The idea of a full-time office job makes me want to gouge my eyes. Ideally, I'd like a job that is partly in the office and partly working hands-on out in the world. I went to lunch last week with with my boss and one of the center's field researchers. The field researcher told me I could go out with him and the others to the Everglades to help them/observe them do their work, so I'm looking forward to taking advantage of this offer. As I mentioned in the last post, I'm studying Buddhism more seriously than I have in a long time. I find it helps me when I'm feeling lost. I've been reading a lot of Brevity magazine because I'm thinking of taking my thesis in the direction of short essays. We'll see how that goes.

I had gotten excited about assuaging said condition[s] with a couple of dives, but Dad was feeling like crap today. I was also feeling a bit under the weather, otherwise I would've lobbied hard for Sister and I to go all by out lonesomes. Of course, he would have freaked out and panicked and forbade us from going alone. I totally understand that; this is one of the times where I can understand his paranoia and desire for control. Anyways, hopefully we'll actually be going diving tomorrow. I am really hoping that this is not as bad as the last time we went on Memorial Weekend; our second dive, we got down to about twenty feet, realized that the one-and-a-half-foot visibility wasn't going to improve, came up, and went home. Seriously, when we started our descent, we held onto each other, and even then, I could only see Dad's hand and wrist, and Sister said she could only see my hand and wrist.

In other news, I am both friendsick and stricken with cabin fever. To admit the later is no great surprise; I have not lived easily in this house for about a decade, now. To admit the former, in a public forum, is admittedly a bit out-of-character for me. I'm trying for a certain level of emotional honesty with this blog, so admitting friendsickness openly is one step in that direction. [I'm also trying to maintain honesty in general, but anyone who knows me knows that sometimes emotional honesty is a challenge for me.]

I'm going to fight both of those things [friendsickness, cabin fever] as best I can. Even though it will be difficult to get a hold of the people that I'm missing the most right now, I'm setting up funtimes with some of the people that I've not seen for the longest time; Blake, Dulcey, Jamie, and Kate [to name a few]. There will probably be spontaneous movietime with Mark sometime soon, and I'll drop by to hang out with Andy when I have a large chunk of free time that coincides with one of her breaks. I still owe Gina a coffeetimes, and I randomly run into Aaron and others while out coffeeing on my own. All of those things take me out of the house, so that's good. I've also started to go to the gym, which introduces an opportunity to pass time in a different monotonous [yet fun, somehow] setting. Eventually I will treat myself to some indoor bouldering, but that probably won't be until July and maybe into August.

And, as always, there is work. That gives me a little bit to do and also pays me, for which I am eternally appreciative. I'm going to call my hopefully-second employer tomorrow to talk about things and see what she'll need from me, in the hopes of having a little bit more to do and a little bit more money in the bank. This is all so that I can probably cure my cabin fever and possibly die from friendsickness in the fall semester.

I'll blog about the diving tomorrow, assuming it happens.
