You sit there waiting for your detail to be called, dozing off in an awkward position with rifle in hand and head nodding incessantly toward the muzzle. Then when you get called up, you line up, put on your helmet, sign out and collect your ammo, check the magazines, keep them, put on your earplugs, take a couple of deep breaths and proceed into the chamber.

Then you walk to your firing lane, you wait for the detail in front to finish firing, then proceed to take up position. By this time, you should be perspiring profusely and heart pumping at overdrive. You tell yourself to make every shot count, to stay calm and composed and to remember all the fundamentals (don't snap, tuck in the butt, grip firmly, breathe-release-hold). Then the command is given, "Firers, magazines of 6 rounds load, and ready." Target comes up, squeeze off, and down goes the target.

Then your Captain yells at you, "Eh, where you aiming! You shooting wrong target!" You feel disheartened but quickly adjust to the right target, struggling not to panic and to regain focus. You continue shooting. This time, the heart pumps faster and faster, while the breathing gets heavier and heavier.

Then the last target comes up, you gun it down and the announcement of "Firers, unload check clear" comes, then you heave a sigh of relief. You walk out of the chamber in step, with earplugs in ear (almost isolating you from the world), recounting the shots nd the crap mistakes you made and feeling utterly disappointed. You reach the ammo point, return the magazines, sign the forms then realise you're drenched in perspiration.

As the cadet conducting walks out of the control room, you eagerly wait for his announcement of the people who made marksmen.

Then you know it's all over when you hear your name. You feel happy momentarily, then the euphoria dies down. You take seat, helmets off, and you rest. Because shooting is tiring. It is absolutely draining--the eyes, the body, the mind.

I used to work as a Chaplain at an air cadet camp. For three summers in a row I ate mess food, tried to convince cadets they weren NOT seeing faces in their shoes after a thunderstorm and try out a different church every sunday with raging hormonal, yet faithful, youth. It was some of the best and hardest summers of my life.

My first summer I was 22. An amateur supreme and out to prove myself. I had done two years of Bible School and a bit of time as a youth pastor, and somehow that qualified me to advise CO's and work with Doctorate-educated officers. Intimidating? Oh yeah.

I think the hardest part was in our counselling office during evening shift when a youth would unload on me a problem at home, the fact they couldn't stop cutting their wrists or that their homesickness (after seven hours) was more than they could bear. I didn't know what to say. Was I supposed to convince them of my view? In 30 minutes, was I to make their world...perfect? After three years, I realized not at all, I just needed to listen. All they wanted was to be validated, heard and appreciated. Lesson One.

One of my favourite parts of the experience was being able to create Lifeskills lessons that I taught daily to the basic cadets - those who were at camp for the first time ever. The youngins. Self-esteem. Dreams. Relationships. I took great pleasure in attempting to mold their young minds, give them opportunities for ice-breakers, skits and games and try to leave atleast one nugget with every lesson. After the 50 minutes ended the rooms wreaked of sweat and my throat was hoarse. But it was worth it. For in their eyes I could see a bit of hope that what I was saying was true. That they did have a purpose. That they could learn leadership. That their life as they knew it, good or bad, can and will change. Something was seeded though I may never know it. Something always catches in what we speak. Lesson Two.

As civilian staff and officers mixed in the mess hall, the bar or the backyard campfire, I was challenged in how I was to be "normal" yet also remain my identity and expectations of a chaplain. Not an easy task. Everyone has a stigma and perception of what that role should look like, and I had to learn that through fun and flame, I was Lani, a Chaplain, take it or leave it. I didn't have a doctorate. I didn't go to seminary. I just loved helping people and God. I had to be me. Lesson Three.

Tonight after work I walked by that same cadet camp. I now live in this town where I used to work. The July sun was shining and a cool wind blew. I could hear the rustle in the same poplar trees I used to teach under. I plopped on the grass, laid back, head in hands, and remembered those amazing moments of my life. I could hear in the distance "all the way up and all the way back, left, right, left..." I smiled. I could see cadets lining up for supper and a cessna taking off from the runway.

I took the time out of my hectic schedule to relive some amazing moments. Soak it up. As I walked back I heard a young female officer shout to some boys "Gentleman, you need to get away from the ladies' barracks!" Smile. Some things never change!

This week Alan is at CCF (cadet corps) summer camp. As I dropped him off on Sunday morning it did

This week Alan is at CCF (cadet corps) summer camp. As I dropped him off on Sunday morning it did leave me feeling quite strange. Part of me remembers doing these myself (I never did a weeks camp, but I did a few day one). I remember hating parts of it - being drilled on how immaculate my bed was for example. I never did seem to be able to tuck a blanket in so that a coin would bounce off it. And, I was always the one who forgot something, or ended up in the most mud. Other parts I clearly recall now as big and memorable experiences as a teenager - firing a proper machine gun, doing full army assaults courses, night ambush drills, trips in the back of an army truck.

But, as I was having both these sets of feelings come back from my time in the CCF to wash over me, I realised that I now added the generic parental concern of 'I hope he'll be ok'. Nothing especially rational about that really, and there would be little worse than wrapping kids in cotton wool. But, it's a natural human emotion. And, I was a bit envious, if I'm honest.

It felt quite strange to simultaneously feel both excited and nervous on Alan's behalf and nervous on my own. Anyway, I'm looking forward to when he gets back this weekend when we can hear all about it, and I can unwind the various emotions.

Kadang suka keliatan kontras banget.

Emeline n'a rencontré aucune difficulté.

Rizal untuk materi Straight and Level 1 & 2.

Untuk Emergency Checklist tentang Electrical Failure During Flight. Airmanship mengenai Fuel Valve dan QNH Settings.

Pas lagi Briefing di Cadet Crew Room, tiba-tiba Capt. Bunga masuk. Dia kaget karena liat kita ngumpul lagi asik ngebahas sesuatu dan masing-masing orang pegang buku. Tiba-tiba aja bilang "Any Questions?". I have two free sortie, who wants to fly with me?". Tumben! Apa yang akan terjadi? Hahaha... Akhirnya Mr. Sierra Juliet 9 dan Mr. November Echo 1 yang terbang dengan Capt. Bunga.

Pre-Flight Check - Cadet RL

Fly Safe! Safety, Safety, and Safety!

Dan pas ditanyain, "So how, sire?". Lalu dijawab "Okay, no problem. Go ahead". Kemudian, Kadet WY nunggu di Cadet Crew Room sendirian, biasa lah... nunggu dipanggil sama instruktur. Emang instruktur satu ini maunya dia yang manggil student nya kalo dia udah siap terbang. Setelah ditungguin, akhirnya datang juga. Dia melanjutkan... "Hmm... Sunday, okay?"

Kota Bharu - Malaysia,

Kota Bharu - Malaysia,

Rabu, jadwal terbang awalnya cuma ada lima orang. WY, BS, JL, DG, dan Mr. Tango Tango (AG). Berhubung WY lagi not feeling well, digantiin sama Mr. November Charlie 2 (RM). Tapi tiba-tiba ada perubahan jadwal, MD, RE, Mr. November Charlie 1 (PT) jadi nongol callsign nya di schedule board. BS flight nya di cancel karena instrukturnya not feeling well. Mr. November Charlie 2 terbang sama Capt. Bunga, dengan materi Straight and Level 1. Bunga dengan materi Straight and Level 2.

Left clear, front clear, right clear, all around clear! eh tapi ternyata di sebelah kanan ada traffic.

Ah, jangan ngomong Airmanship dulu, Roadmanship aja deh. Kalo mau nyebrang jalan, apa langsung nyelonong aja? Roadmanship nya kemana?

Ok, no problem. Nevermind, don't worry about our two last paragraph, ignore it if You don't want. Simple!

Belum punya pengalaman? Belum bisa mikir? Belum bisa mengambil arti dari sebuah pelajaran? Atau belum mau ngungkapin? Itulah kenapa kata 'Berbagi' diciptakan. Untuk itulah kata 'Keluarga' ditorehkan. Dan untuk itulah... Kita semua, ada di sini....

Kota Bharu - Malaysia,

Pertengahan minggu ini, hari selasa, cuma Mr. November Echo 2 - Callsign RR dan Mr. Juliet Papa - Callsign RN yang terbang. Mr. JP udah gak muntah lagi untuk penerbangan materi Climb and Descent, cuma merasa mual aja. Well done, Sire!

Kita pulang setelah selesai acara penyambutan, sekitar pukul 3.45 sore. AC bus gak nyala, panas banget! berasa sauna! udah tadi panas-panasan pas acara penyambutan, ternyata di bus juga sama aja. hehehe..

Kegiatan sore, olahraga sama latihan baris-berbaris mulai pas jam 6 sore.

I was limping (from a busted ankle) to the toilet, with toothbrush in hand, fearing that I would sit out the route march that morning. Then the siren came, followed by the none-too-familiar voice that growled "0615 FULL BATTLE ORDER!" I dashed back to my room, put on my uniform, boots and gear and dashed down to fall in.

I had been running--with load--and I could run. So I went on, did the march and finished it fine.

It was rather puzzling. I choose to believe it must be the wonders of adrenaline (and not my weak mind) at work. Maybe next time they'd make adrenaline-ated cola to complement the existing carbonated ones? It'd be quite a hit, at least with people like me whose bodies seem to be falling apart.

P.S. Someone was referred to my blog with the search engine keywords: "army ocs showering". Seriously, what?!!!

At work today they did not need us to simulate any traffic around Vaernes airport, as the new air traffic control cadets was only going to get familiar with the system and look at screens and push buttons. They only needed us to start and stop the excercises on the systems. So me and a friend were training on instrument approaches on Microsoft Flightsimulator. We have a really nice setup with the latest computer, yoke and pedals, and two LCD-screens. I need to show you some pictures, maybe on wednesday, after my camera has been to a quick cleaning at the local photostore. The amount of dust inside it is unbelieveable, yet I have tried everything to get it removed. There`s a good chance the rumblings I hace done inside it has made things even worse.

We flew a 737-600 (PMDG) from Salzburg to Innsbruck, at night and in fog. A nice challenge. Then I flew from Roros to Trondheim in 600 meters at night, in rain. I learned really well to fly using the Flight Director, while still mantaining manual flight.

I got a nice recommendation to you also, if you haven`t heard it yet. You need to buy the cd by Dane Cook¹, Retaliation:Need. It`s something about Dane Cook, I guess you either hate him or love him. Who doesn`t love him? Retaliation:Need, listen to it. In fact, I am listening to it now, and I smile everytime and say to myself; that Dane Cook is a crazy m* f*.

Yesterday I wrote about the 747 that snap in two during take-off. It seems I may have made a mistake there, because the aircraft that lost its engine mid-flight proved to be its sister aircraft, N709CK, and not N704CK. Anyway, something about the maintenance issue that keeps coming to my mind about that airline. A small digression but, lucky for us they only carry cargo.

Then in a few hours, my term as CPC will be up. That supposedly means less responsibilities, more admin time, less stress, and more friends.

BUT no. Because in a few hours, it will be the start of a new term, upward. That means even more responsibilities, even less admin time, even more stress and even less friends.

hello campers,

blah dee blah, lah dee dah, peace and hairgrease.

i typically shy away from discussions of race, mostly because i rarely see the utility in them. however, i was especially disturbed by a news segment on NPR earlier this week.

West Point, in its infinite military wisdom, recently dispatched a mini regiment of cadets to New Jersey to live for three or four days amongst the minorities, most notably in communities of people they, as soldiers, will be apt to encounter while patrolling the streets of Afghanistan or Iraq. the intended goal of this experiment in immersion was prefaced by a Major (and class instructor): we need to introduce our uncultured army-tykes-in-combat-training to the intricate, undiscovered facets of life that are the everyday experiences of peoples whose cultures they do not understand. (this sort of thing is expected to come in handy while the Bush Administration strives to (1) bring democracy to their otherwise lawless native homelands, and (2) figure out why not everyone is so keen on its methods).

NPR then trotted on a cadet, a young man from Arkansas, who prefaced his short-winded testimonial with a quick overview of his background: "white [and] from a town with 1500 people," etc. he then went on to describe the welcome-with-open-arms, amiable nature of these [pre-selected], [America-based] families and mosques, and how he learned that they have families (gasp!) and pray and eat dinner (you don't say!). granted, these might be valuable insights in the right context (they’re really not all terrorists!), there's no getting around the superficiality of these revelations, particularly as they do nothing more than echo the typical talking points of culture shock.

the story, in its totality, amounted to nothing more than a bizarre exposé of "white ignorance" -- the dissatisfied and disgruntled parent to "white guilt." and i'm sorry, but this not news, nor is it worthy: everyone is ignorant to external (a.k.a. "foreign") customs and cultures; that's actually part of the point. moreover, being a minority does not give you some special magical insight into the life experiences of other minorities.

NPR should have instead focused on the substantive new learnings these cadets acquired: what types of misinformation about Muslims or Iraqis or Islam have been corrected? In what ways will Sir Cadet be better enabled to serve and protect the Sunni or the Shia? How do we respect fundamental distinctions amongst groups of people we so callously lump under the heading "Middle Eastern?" simply knowing they have families just isn't going to move the needle. and as the listener, how exactly have i been educated with anything of value?

it seems our military might be trying to undo some of the unfair, imbalanced, and skewed perspectives rampant in American culture. but [American] media continues business-as-usual, inculcating a plethora of misconceptions and stereotypes with its oftentimes sensationalist journalism. in the end, we get more "news reports" long on superficiality, short on substance, and absent on opportunity for public enlightenment.

the army has realised the quid-pro-quo is hurting them; will the general public ever realise we're not being well-served by it either?

______________________________

“99.99% of what happens is not on the news.” - Loesje -
