Modern web-applications can be designed with enhanced user interfaces and functionalities, which used to be the privelege of professional desktop-applications. Web-developers can create amazing web-applications with AJAX. Here I give some links below for developers:

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML isn’t a new programming language, as it is often mistakingly called. Basically, AJAX is a set of XHTML, CSS, DOM, XMLHttpRequest and XML, put together and used together for the same purpose - to improve the user-server-interaction.

There is a list with useful AJAX-based techniques you should always have ready to hand developing AJAX-based web-applications:

1. AJAX AutoSuggest:

One of the suggestions offered by seasoned fasters to help us during Ramadhaan is to use calendars and schedules.

If possible, set up a bulletin board in a central place in your home, like the kitchen. You can make a nice bulletin board using foam board, gift wrap paper, sheet protectors, glue, a small dry erase board, tape and some creativity. Get the whole family involved!

Here is an example of what one looks like. A foam poster board was covered in gift wrap paper. Then a small dry erase board was attached to the left side using foam tape. A small cork board was placed under the dry erase. Calendars are in the center. They are placed in sheet protectors (for more durability). A circular piece of velcro was attached to the back center of the sheet protector. And the other piece of stick-on velcro was attached to the foam board. The calendars can be taken down easily and a new month can be inserted into the sheet protector. Another calendar -this one is a yearly one- hangs to the right of the other calendars. On the right side, two note pads are added; one is a sticky note and the other is a regular note pad that was attached using tape. Finally, a small box for holding ink and dry erase pens was covered in gift wrap paper and attached using double stick tape.

Here is your blank calendar for the month of Ramadhan (Blank Ramadhan Calendar -pdf). You will need to write in the number of the day once we know when Ramadhan begins. Print on paper with designs or paper that is colored. You can find design-paper cheaply at dollar stores or at places like JoAnns or Michaels. I put my calendar in a sheet protector to write on it with a dry erase marker.

Here is another calendar (Ramadhan Daily Timed Weekly Calendar -pdf). This one is a blank daily timed planner for Sunday thru Saturday. Print out 4 of these so that you have enough for the entire month. Use pretty paper of course. Write your daily schedule on this planner. Hang in a place you will see it. Print out enough for each of your family members.

Another great calendar to use is the Family Fasting Tracker. JazaaKillahu Khayrn to the sister who developed it. There are also other great calendars on the site. But you better print before Ramadhaan gets here; once bandwidth is exceeded on a site, you have to wait a long, long time for the site to become available again.

We are currently working with a local company (Cool Outdoor Stuff, Inc.) to assist them in their effort to make bicycle engine kits available online. You know what? I didn't even know they made bicycle engine kits! Man,... I gotta get out more :)

These engine kits for bicycles are able to be bolted in place (they require a little bit of i-can-fix-this-myself mindset) and they basically turn your bicycle into a motorized bicycle! Is that cool, or what!

Anyway, just thought I would make a note for your round file ;) --- this local company (to their credit) recognized the value of using their logo as a major component of their sign. In their case, they painted a very large version of the logo on the end of their building (facing a major US highway) for many passing motorists to see over, and over, and over, and over... blah, blah... you get the picture.

Now they just need to order some promotional advertising calendars :)

An acid/base reaction in Oak Woods Cemetery in Hyde Park! Thanks to my brother, Dan, for his high tech equipment. Thanks to my friend, Adam, for his willingness to participate in this science/art experiment. Thanks to Enrico for being buried so conveniently on my commute to work. (If you've been following the blog of late...yes, this, too, is to be a part of the 2009 Calendar!) I, of course, save the best pictures for the calendar.

The third calendar is the "Day-By-Day Classic" calendar. This is an exciting calendar because it allows for full automation of the display! The beauty of the "Day-By-Day" calendar is that you can:

set your display time interval to 1 day

select the current calendar day

start the slide show

…and the calendar will keep up with the day of the month automatically for a whole year!

It seems that having a concrete plan on the wall, be it a blackboard, a whiteboard, a calendar, or s

It seems that having a concrete plan on the wall, be it a blackboard, a whiteboard, a calendar, or simply a piece of lined paper taped to a cabinet door, helps me to stay focussed.

Because when I don't have a visual plan to look at, I feel like I start a thousand things, projects or chores, but nothing ever seems to get completed.

I tend to wander aimlessly around the house wondering why I entered this room, or opened that closet, looking at life's mess and clutter, and I just can't seem to get it together.

I could blame this lack of propulsion to do something on the fact that the last few weeks of summer vacation are upon us, that the rainless weather is beckoning, that the infant became a toddler overnight, that the 3yo is exhausted by the multiple activities he pursued this summer, that hubby is going on a 6-day fishing trip leaving me with the kids and clutter, but I won't. Because it's not them. Not really. It's everything together, the cumulative effect.

I'm just so tired.

Having said that, there is no better time to look for an organizational planner than in August when the stores are pushing back-to-school propoganda. I've made excuses to myself to enter shops specifically to look for the perfect calendar or organizer or planner, but I've always left emtpy-handed. Well, not completely empty-handed. I might have a tall latte in one hand, and a lemon poppyseed slice in the other. But a planner, or organizer, doesn't seem to warrant the purchase for some reason. Either they were too complicated, too reminiscent of past-held jobs, or simply too expensive.

What am I looking for anyway? A large, big-squared calendar-type planner for the whole family to use? Or a smaller one just for me I can put into the diaperbag? Should I stick to the old whiteboard for now? Or use notepad or email or something? Maybe I should get a blackberry....or an iPhone...

Perhaps a lined piece of paper will do just fine, thank you very much.

But where is the lined paper? Now that the basement is mostly finished save a few details, you would think finding paper is the easy part. Except the bins and boxes need to be sorted and put away...where again did I put the paper?

Anyway, I digress. After all, I could, technically speaking, use the back of a bill to make notes on. Happen to have a couple right here next to me that need paying.

I think I'll go have a cup of tea and a piece of pie while I ponder my situation.

What's a Chicago Calendar without a few Gangsters? Well, here are a few hints of what's to come for the month of February. (For those who know last year's calendar...they were featured in front of the Green Mill for the month of February. Get it? Now they're dead.)

Special thanks to Catherine and Ryan for helping bring these historical figures back into focus. The brothers Peter and Frankie "Tightlips" Gusenberg are buried in Irving Park Cemetery. They were 2 of the 7 North Side Mob gangsters killed by Al Capone's gang at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in 1929. Despite being riddled with bullets, Frank stayed alive for a few more hours and was sent to the hospital where he refused to squeal to the detectives.

His alleged famous last words are: "I ain't no copper." His legacy lives on perhaps with the character on The Simpsons:

Johnny Tightlips.

The cemetery markers for these two souls also remain tightlipped. I went into the cemetery office and inquired about the location of Frank and Peter Gusenberg. A woman, who was "filling in" that day, asked me if I was a relative and if I was sure they were buried there. I told her I was not related. (I did not mention this but findagrave.com has their grave pictured and recorded.) She had me follow her down the corridor to a row of card catalog-like drawers. Sure enough, two note cards appeared with their names in one of the dusty drawers. I wasn't allowed to take a picture of them so I quickly wrote down the lot numbers. Interestingly, the card stated that Frank was removed from Rosehill Cemetery on July 2, 1929 and Peter was removed June 12, 1929 and buried at Irving Park Cemetery. I wonder if there was fear of more vandalism at Rosehill. Catherine, Ryan, and I began dutifully combing through the section. After no luck, I went back into the office again and got a map. We searched further and came to the conclusion that they must have unmarked graves or there was some error. Those gangsters got away from us. The show must go on though and we set up our scene where, according to the map, they are said to be buried.

Here's a silly question: would you like to pay less and get more? Of course you would. But that's not always possible when you're buying promotional products. The price always seems to rise, never to go down. Until now. For the next couple of months, I've lowered the price of my entire line of promotional products in an effort to let everyone know how committed I am to being your promotional products source. In fact, I've lowered the price to the level it was back in January 2008! That's a price you won't find anywhere else in the country on this type of quality product, and it's only here at SAYBASIC. Of course it's a gimmick. If doing anything to get you to come into SAYBASIC and see the kind of excellent quality and service we provide is a gimmick, then I'm guilty as charged. But since there's no risk to you, only a great value, why not drop by and check it out for yourself? Just mention that you received this e-mail message, and you'll get the best price on promotional products you'll find anywhere. And once you buy from us and meet our great people, I think you'll come back again and again. For more information, the website address is www.saybasic.com

Finally, it's appropriate to call the polka dot car a clown car. It was full of clowns this weekend! I took some clowns to visit Showman's Rest of Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park, IL. Yes, this blog post, among many of late, are shameless attempts at promoting my forthcoming 2009 Chicago Cemetery Calendar. These are just sneak previews of what is to come. These clowns--this is not their day job-- just looked so good I had to share some pics before the calendar debut! Meet the cemetery characters pictured below: (L-R: Vivian, Alan, Erin, Dave, and Scarlett.)

The whole crew got suited up at Alan and Erin's place in the neighboring town of Berwyn. (They did not know me and my project until the day of the photo shoot; this speaks volumes of their character.)

You know you have good models when they come with sketchbooks of their own face paint designs!

We headed over to Woodlawn Cemetery to pay our respects to some circus performers. See the whole train wreck story of 1918 here. or at findagrave.com here.

There are so many amazing pictures of this photo shoot I am tempted to purchase a "Pro" account at Flickr and share them all. I'd like to think my 200 picture limit on my free Flickr account keeps my picture sharing to a finely crafted and curated venue of only my best. Otherwise, I fear my pictures would be interred in its own vast, unvisited cyber graveyard. These are the decisions of our generation, folks, to go "flickr pro" or not...

Amazingly enough, that same day, The Creature (himself!) from the Black Lagoon (remember him?), was signing autographs at "Horrorbles," The Sci-Fi movie memorbilia store in town. "The craziest things happen in Berwyn."-Scarlett. So clowns got in on that, too:

And what better way to end a perfect clown day then with a perfect Italian ice from Gina. I'm not sure Gina fully understood our clown agenda but that's okay, she gave us free refills.

Okay iPhone users - I need some help. I've noticed some software out there that can assist in getting your files onto your iPhone. For example, I want to sync my Contacts and Calendar appointments but use Entourage, and there's software for that called e2sync. Then I'd like to put photos on there, and yes, could export my photos from Lightroom then import into iPhoto and sync from iTunes - but found another piece of software that allows you to control your iPhone like an iPod - where you can use it as a hard drive and just drag and drop files right onto your iPhone. This one is called PhoneView - an easy way to get music, photos and whatever you want onto your iPhone, but doesn't quite solve the Calendar and Contact synchronizing. So I'm looking for help - what do I use? What's the best way to be able to sync my Entourage Contacts and Calendar, but also be able to sync Music, Photos, etc.?

Yes, summer may be winding down. But some design stands the test of time. Todd St. John's handsome woodcut fold-out type for the Yale University Art Gallery Calendar Cover series certainly looks brilliantly cool and contemplative (and organic and fun!) no matter what the season. It's a beautiful contribution to the series, which invites talented designers to render standard text for the Gallery's seasonal calendar of events.

Please don't scream but the 2009 calendars and datebooks have started to arrive (yes, already). It's hard to think ahead to a new year when it still feels like there's a good bit of this year to go, but 2009 will be here before you know it. If you're like me, you're already starting to schedule dentist appointments and get-togethers for the coming year.

Right now, we have a good number of Llewellyn's calendars (from the classic Astrological Calendar and Witch's Calendar) to their new additions (Mystic Faerie Calendar and Dragon Calendar), and their almanacs (Magical Almanac, Spell-A-Day Almanac, Herbal Almanac) and datebooks (Witch's Datebook, Daily Planetary Guide).

Incoming very soon are our Pomegranate and Amber Lotus lines with themes from Tibetan art to spirit horses to Goddesses and beyond. A bit later in September, we're hoping to see the ever-popular We'Moon wall calendars and datebooks.

Don't wait until the last minute to get the perfect calendar. While we do put our remaining calendars on sale in late December/early January, the pickings can be slim by that point.

As part of my calendar shots for 2009, I headed down with my friend, Mary, to Resurrection Cemetery

As part of my calendar shots for 2009, I headed down with my friend, Mary, to Resurrection Cemetery on S. Archer Ave, a stretch of road that hosts Chicago's most famous ghost: Resurrection Mary. This is the one shot that does not feature an exclusive grave as there is controversy over which grave claims the true Mary. Instead, we have featured this wandering spirit along the road where many a hitchhiker has spotted her. Here's some hollywood-ized folklore about this ghost:

According to legend, Resurrection Mary has been sighted at Chet's Melody Lounge, an old bar that boldly faces the cemetery from across the street. We went into the bar to freshen up from our drive down I-55. Mary walked in wearing her work clothes from the day, after a few minutes and a few sips of our drinks, Mary went to the restroom to get into costume. She returned to her bar stool wearing a long white wedding dress. Mike, (check out his myspace) he's pictured here in his Ozzie sunglasses with Mary: was jamming it out on the keyboard in the back corner of the bar. He commented on her "nice dress" in mid-song. We looked for the Bloody Mary that is supposed to sit at the end of the bar for the famous ghost and we also looked for "The Ballad of Resurrection Mary" on the jukebox. (My Chicago Haunts book by Ursela Bielski promised these details.) Apparently only the bartender on Sunday has a Bloody Mary out for the ghost and the jukebox went digital and doesn't have the song anymore. We got our fill of stories of ghost encounters from the locals in the bar. Gil, who bought two beers for us "two hippie chicks at the end of the bar," told us of how he passed out outside the bar after claiming there was no such thing as ghosts. His cigarette went flying out of his hand. Rez Mary was not happy! Ray, Chet's Melody Lounge webmaster, and an extra in the Resurrection Mary Movie made in 2004, recounted the time a beer "just flew off the bar-- I swear, ask the bartender." Ray says the movie's horrible but he's in the scene that they shoot at Chet's Melody Lounge. Here is our rendition of Resurrection Mary at Chet's with Ray seated in the background:

The real shots at the Cemetery gates will be fully revealed in the calendar but here's a sneak preview:

The legendary steel bars where Mary is believed to have pulled the bars apart and imprinted her tiny lady-ghost hands have long since been replaced. (The cemetery claims that a truck backed into the gate. But believers insist that it mysteriously wouldn't "take" to new coats of paint in that same spot.)

It's just another day in Chicago...kayaking down the Chicago river and then placing a hot dog in front of Oscar Mayer's grave. Yep, just another day. (You'll have to wait until the calendar comes out to see the hot dog vendor in front of the sausage maker's grave.) You won't have to wait to go kayaking at kayakchicago.com though. The garbage in the river is pretty bad, like don't touch it with a 10 foot stick or kayak paddle... but it gets a little "sparkly" and "clear" as you paddle further into the loop. A few more pics are at my flickr site.

August is jam packed with"cemetery dates." I'm still looking for a cow costume for Mrs O'Leary's grave. I'll dress up in it if I have to. A two person costume would be ideal. And if anyone doesn't like their photo taken, you can hide in the rear legs... Anyone?
