M's home!! I've been busy trying out the new lenses. Currently I'm addicted to . I was told it so it's hard and tricky using Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8D since it's manual focus. After reading on Flickr, checking out the threads how to use it, etc, I tried taking a lot of pictures and get myself used to lens, it's so much fun! I've been playing with it since the afternoon. 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR is great too! I hope the weather will be great tomorrow so I can go out an take more pictures. The flash is amazing :) I'm really happy with the purchase. It saved me more than $500 buying them from the states. Yeah, everything is expensive in Europe!

Taken with 55-200mm.

It took me 15mins to get a clearer shot - 50 mm f/1.8D

Ok, this is a gift from M - he actually went to bebe to get me this! 18-55mm.

Upon the suggestion of my co-worker, Blake, I sent some of my documentation photos to the printers (AKA Walgreens). Dang! Why didn't I do this earlier? There's something so satisfying in holding the real thing in your hands, I had forgotten the pleasure. The odd thing is that when I look at the images, I forget that I'm looking at pictures of myself. Or not forget really... but, how to describe? OK, when I was 18 I worked in a bank and handled large quantities of money. After a while the money itself lost it's quality of being currency and simply became pieces of paper I was expected to count and uncrease. In most of these pictures, I've lost of the quality of being me and have become something else entirely. I think this photo in particular is good example of this:

This expression does not belong to me, I don't know where it came from or what I was thinking about when this image was captured. On my second photo shoot with Alexis Litzky, Alexis kept saying that there was too much of me in the pictures. Though I understood what she was saying, I kept acting the way I usually do in front of a camera. As of Day 39, I feel like I've been able to reinterpret my relationship with the camera so it works for this project.

About 4 years ago I bought my first digital camera - a Fuji S7000. At the time I wanted something more than a simple 'point and shoot' camera, but I felt that until I learnt a little more about photography I couldn't afford the expense of a decent SLR.

Four years on my photograpphy has moved on a long way. Okay, so I do still use the auto mode on my camera when I'm being lazy! But I've also learnt a lot more. I've got used to adjusting the various knobs on my camera to play with exposure settings, speed, macro, white balance, depth of field... and so on. I've still got a LOT to learn, but decided to treat myself to my first SLR.

Quite a few people I know have had Canon's and been really impressed with them, so after some reading up of reviews online I ordered myself a Canon EOS 450D from Amazon. Amazon seemed to have the best price, and there is a cash back offer of £50 at the moment so I feel I have a bargain!

I couldn't wait for my parcel to arrive... and today it did! I expect I'll the spend the entire weekend trying to understand the manual and take a couple of very basic shots. I have bought myself a book on SLR photography too so hopefully I can take my photography to the next level... watch this space!

Anyway, here is the rest of the story in pictures!

so I took a 5 days break to relax but the things I had to face (some more important than other) didn't desapear magicaly :-(

I finally decided on a university for next year...ok I didn't send the mail to Cergy saying I'm not going, yet. But I decided on Paris. La sorbonne panthéon. I applied there 3 times already and it's the first time they accept me, I guess it's time for me to take a chance. It seems like it's gonna be a lot of work but I need change, and the reputation of La Sorbonne is great even abroad :-)

I also decided on cutting my hair. ah ah, no panic, I didn't cut so much. I can't believe I became one of those freaks who are close to cry when the hairdresser cuts 2 centimeters. But it took me so long to grow my hair down there ! I admit it needed to be trimed, I started to look like...nothing actually...or maybe just a very old lion. So I did it, it doesn't change a LOT but still. and I'll have the satisfaction of enjoying around 3 days of straight brushed hair !!!!

that's an old decision im about to talk about, some months ago when we decided älskling was going to stay over for the summer and hopefully more... I decided not to go to Sicily with my family ... so here we are, they are packing right now..they are leaving tomorrow..and I can't say it doesn't affect me. they are going to a place we've already been 2 times and it's just AWESOME, just the fact that the restaurant we go to makes Nutella Pizza should explain the awesomeness of the place... just picturing the beach, the sun, the food..damn I wish I was rich and could take älskling with me with them. I should stop thinking like that I know. I'm not unhappy, I know we're gonna have a nice time with the house just for ourselves and then some friends are coming over....

decision to buy a new memory card cause I was sick and tired of my fucked up old one. the dude I asked about it said if I wanna fix it I'll have to lose all my pics on it, there is no way I wanna do that I have a lot of my family and 2 great ones of a raspberry macaron !! So I'll keep it somewhere safe until I find a way to make it work ! and I offered myself..(wait a min actually no, just remembered mom paid for it) a 2GB, so I can make around 700 pics :-)

decision to celebrate my bday early with my family before they leave. so tonight !!!!!

Yesterday while biking home from work I noticed a new street camera at the intersection of Osborne St. N and Mostyn Pl. If ya'll don't know, heading south towards the Osborne bridge can suck in afterwork traffic. All the drivers in a rush would take the designated bus lane to beat traffic. Sometime last month I noticed there was a police car parked on the grass stopping tons of cars taking the bus lane. This morning on my bike ride to work there were cops waiting for cars again. They caught one lady on the bus lane, I think, while there wasn't even any traffic. Sucks for you! So just to let ya'll know, don't take the bus lane on Osborne St. N unless it's before 8:30am or after 5:30pm. Hope this saves you a traffic ticket!

ULTRA UPDATE - This camera will take pictures of anything AND I MEAN ANYTHING that comes down this bus lane! Even the buses! Even me! Hmm...I wonder if I can get a hold of a picture of myself. BEWARE!

I’ve written a few posts pushing at the edges of this subject, but haven’t faced it righ

I've written a few posts pushing at the edges of this subject, but haven't faced it right on. Two recent articles by Mike Johnson have prompted me to do a more thorough job (here and a second on the question of Should we love our Cameras).

I like his second point, but I find it impossible to like my camera because all cameras in my opinion are poor (I have better hammers than I have cameras). On the other hand, any craftsman should love their tools and there in lies my dilemma.

Why does the world need another one of these boring tirades? The answer is simple, cameras have evolved for some time now with very little change in the basic paradigm even to the extent of not improving essential features for reasons that I can only guess at.

I days of yore I could forgive camera vendors for not providing us with what I would consider a good camera, but not today with the advent of computers. Both to assist in the design of the camera, but more importantly to control the camera and make it deliver what we want.

Here are some of the reasons:

1) The basic sensor should be able to render an image better than my eyes. We have the technology. I don't know the answer but I can point at a few clues as to why we are on the wrong path. The first is RGB. Everyone is under the impression that this is acceptable, read this post on the bayer filters and color theory. Next ask your self why all high end video cameras use three sensors with no bayer filters. The first is they probably don't need no darn filters that reduce the amount of light to the sensor. The second is each pixel in the sensor receives the same unfiltereed light i.e. no differences between pixel as opposed to each bayer pixel having it's own filter.

There should be no limitations on dynamic range, low light or color fidelity. These sensors should be better than my eyes.

2) Ergonomics. All view finders suck, they should all be binocular like your eyes because that is the way your brain was designed to perceive the world. Read this post on viewfinders.

3) Controls, do we really want to be controlling aperture and shutter speeds? Of course not, those concepts are far to removed from our natural thought process. Read this post Aperture and Shutter please Release Me. And Blow Outs.

Now I'm in a real hurry have to go play with my brother at the driving range, I hope to come back and tune this thing up some more but I'm sure there are others out there that can do a much better job than I. Please get writing.

After reviewing my prints that I received in the mail yesterday, I have realized one of the most important things about art is to enjoy the beauty you create. I definitely plan on having more large prints made. Even just putting the 4x6 of the photo above and one I took of my brother in frames has brightened up my room. I feel inspired when I wake up next to my art.

You don't have to see your art in a gallery to be proud. Go ahead and enjoy your art around the house. Trust me, it's great.

LG is coming out with a new phone called Viewty aka LG KU990, that is more camera than a phone. It has all the standard features of a smartphone including Java support, Microsoft Office document support, and contact management. It also includes the Google package: Google Search, e-Blogger, Gmail™ and Google Maps™ for mobile handsets. Based on GSM technology, it comes with 100MB internal memory, 2Gb microSD card slot, and has 240X400 touch screen with handwriting recognition. But, boy, what a camera it is. It comes with largest resolution in camera-phone so far, 5Mpxl, with both auto and manual focus capabilities, 4 ISO settings 100, 200, 400 & 800, image stabilization, and high-speed video recording with 120 frames per second. I can't wait to get my hands on this puppy! Sadly, no word on whether it will be released in US yet.

Look closely and guess what they could be...

Any wild guesses? No clue yet? NOT YET
Ladies and gentlemen... congratulations! You've just looked into the future...yep that's right!
You've just seen something that will replace your PC in the near future.
Here is how it works:

In the revolution of miniature computers, scientists have made great developments with bluetooth technology.. .
These are the forthcoming computers you can carry in your pockets .

This 'pen type of instrument' produces both the monitor as well as the keyboard on any flat surface from where you can carry out functions you would normally do on your desktop computer.

Imagine my surprise of what awaited me at my desk when I went to work one morning, a camera, a Minolta SRT101 to be exact. It was a coworker's who has no inclination of using it anymore. He said that he was done taking pictures and that his daughter already got his other newer camera. She didn't want the old Minolta camera and that was why it ended on my desk. The day prior, my coworker and I had a brief conversation about cameras (particularly the Pentax brand) and I told him then that I would be interested in buying his gear from him if he plans to unload them as he mentioned that he had a Pentax camera with accessories. He was mistaken yet he still took it with him to work and then proceeded to tell me that he'll accept anything for it - box of donuts, money, or whatever. So I gave him $20 and we were then even at that point.

If you are not aware of the Minolta SRT101s, these cameras were made and sold from the 60's to early 80's. A classic. The one I just got was made in the 60's - almost as old as I am. The old battery in it for the light meter was busted for having been in storage for four years, an easily replaceable item. With the new battery in place, the parts of the light meter started to work - both the "pin" and the "hole". The proper exposure adjustment is done by putting the "pin thru the hole" (which is visible in the viewfinder) method. How easy is that? It didn't take me long to put a roll of color film into the camera to find out if it still would work and if my exposure adjustments would yield the desired results. I myself was satisfied of how the pictures turned out all of which I converted to b&w on photoshop, but that is just me though. I have included a few in this post for you all to see for yourself. Please feel free to criticize. Life is good. Enjoy and adios for now.

Samsung announced the Omnia i900 in June 2008. Sprint wanted an answer to AT&T iPhone runaway

Samsung announced the Omnia i900 in June 2008. Sprint wanted an answer to AT&T iPhone runaway success and Samsung rose to the occasion. I hope to lay my hands on this little baby soon for an indepth review. The little bird told me that it will be available in Malaysia next month with a price tag of between RM2,200 to RM2,500 depending on the packaging. When compared to the Apple 3G iPhone at US$199 and US$299, this seems to be a far cry from what the Omnia is going for shortly. When the iPhone hits our shops, I think the rush for iPhone is more for the hype than the price since a parallel imported iPhone will be about the same as Omnia without the warranty and support.

If you are anticipating the arrival of the iPhone, you may want to take a look at the Omnia for now. Since the official iPhone is not expected to be in Malaysia until Q4 this year, you do have some time to consider what is touted as an iPhone killer.

So allow me to introduce you to a very sexy device that really does challenge the iPhone directly. Check out the summary specs, analysis and the looks.

TouchWiz UI

HSPDA, EDGE, GSM, 3G

3.2" WQVGA TFT LCD (240 x 400)

5-megapixel CMOS camera

FM radio

GPS

TV-out

Wifi

Check out the full details here.

Samsung Innovation

The Omnia uses the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS as opposed to the iPhone using the Mac OSX. The two OS are worlds apart. However, Windows Mobile has had many generations of experience in delivering PDA and Phone features. Samsung enhanced it using their TouchWiz UI that makes the Omnia a bit more intuitive much like the iPhone. HTC is the other manufacturer that has stepped up with TouchFlo to emulate the iPhone interaction using fingers and not with the stylus.

Beyond the UI, Samsung went way ahead to incorporate their homegrown technology, namely, the full fledge 5-megapixel CMOS camera. This is the first for a PDA class phone device and it comes with full digital camera features like Image Stabilizer, Face and Smile Detection and Auto-Panorama. It is also the first to support DivX/XviD with video editing capabilities.

Samsung is also a leader in LCD technology and I'm sure combining the best of Samsung consumer electronics in the Windows Mobile device brings the best of both worlds to us.

The maturity of consumer electronics in phone, display, camera has come to a converging point. iPhone pushed the envelop and the rest are doing a catch up to match it.

The Comparison

The Samsung Omnia should be better than the iPhone in the camera section (both still and video) as well as the phone experience which is more mature.

Apple iPhone went way ahead of everybody with a quantum leap approach of intuitive usage and extremely good LCD. iPhone remains way ahead in the screen department as well as the entertainment department as their iPod Touch experience is fully integrated with the phone here.

The Verdict

I think the verdict is still out because they are quite different in user experience. For Windows Mobile fans who have followed since the O2 days and now with HTC, HP, Asus, MWG, I'd say the Omnia will find itself into the diehard serious PDA phone users with their own favorite programs. With a straight forward save and restore, the Omnia will function seamlessly from their other Windows Mobile devices.

However, for the iPhone, it's taken a cultic approach. It's marketing approach makes fans want it for being seen to have it and being one of the millions in the rest of the world having an iPhone. It doesn't matter that the iPhone phone experience is deficient than the Omnia since the iPhone fans look at "cool" quite differently than the Omnia.

I'd be inclined to watch how the Omnia will fare at the early stage before parallel imported iPhones arrive. Shortly thereafter, the official iPhone will hit the market. Omnia has a small window of opportunity to win over Windows Mobile fans but I doubt iPhone fans will pay much attention though.

The Onmia is not an iPhone killer but a worthy competitor. Both about the same size, Omnia shorter but slightly thicker than the iPhone, but iPhone has achieved a frenzied following while the Omnia is just starting out.

Otherwise, the Omnia is a definitely cool and executive looking device. Go for it!
