Okay, I admit it: I've always wanted to try karaoke. Remember when Neil Patrick Harris got trapped into belting out Petula Clarke's "Downtown" on an episode of "Doogie Howser, MD?" Or Cameron Diaz's wretched performance in "My Best Friend's Wedding?"

From its 1970 origins in Japan to its having passed into the American cultural lexicon by the 1980s, karaoke is one of those things that everyone seems to have an opinion about, whether or not they've actually tried it.

So here's the deal: I'm part of the Asheville Women @ Work group that meets once a month. Unlike most groups, we have no agenda. We don't want your money. We don't want to organize a community service project or do hard-core networking. We want to eat, drink, and be merry--and talk about our work and our lives. That's it. No dues, no drama. Show up when and if you can. We'll miss you if you're not there, but we'll probably see you next time. A very fun group of women that includes business owners, life coaches, legal assistants, marketers, writers, real estate agents, managers, event planners, stay-at-home-moms (that's hard work, in my book), and a whole lot more. In fact, it's such a great group that it deserves its own post at some point.

After dinner on the patio at Wild Wing (Biltmore Avenue), a karaoke splinter cell broke off and headed to Razcals--a bar and karaoke club just off Fairview Road. (If you're an Ashevillain, Razcals is located in the former B.B. Barnes building. If you're not an Ashevillain, take Exit 8 off I-240 and look for the sign.) Disclosure: I'd seen the sign plenty of times, but the "c" in Razcals looked like an "e" and I thought it was something like "Razeals." Duh!

Proprietor Dave met us at the door and welcomed us in--it has a pretty dark and dive-like interior, and most of the decor involves raccoons (since they're rascals, I guess). Not a big crowd, but it was a Thursday, so that may keep some crooners off the late-night circuit. The karaoke "stage" has a backdrop of a big band outlined in red neon, a variety of microphones, and the requisite equipment off to one side. The computer offers about 40,000 choices, apparently, so there's something for everyone.

After Elvis and AC/DC left the building, we indulged in a Bob Seger group-sing, belting out "Old Time Rock and Roll" to the best of our (limited abilities). No Tom Cruise-tighty-whiteys-and socks intro for us; just a video monitor with the words and a row of bright lights that kept us from making eye contact with the audience. Said audience was nice enough to clap and cheer for our performance, which was kind of them (their mama's raised 'em right). We were followed by a decent version of the country song about keying the cheating boyfriend's four-wheel-drive, then "Independence Day," "Copperhead Road," "Cool Change," and the David Allan Coe's 1975 classic "You Don't Have To Call Me Darlin', Darlin'," which is a perennial crowd pleaser, apparently. I'm sure the music continued, but I couldn't stick around as long as they would let me (let me, let me, let me, let me, let me!), because my dog was waiting up.

We were better than Cameron Diaz, but I think Doogie and Pet Clarke could have cleaned our karaoke clocks. Oh, well. I wanted to try it, and I did--and on a work night, even!

Jack invece è impiegato presso l'azienda del padre ma è un fannullone e pensa solo a divertirsi. Per entrambi giunge una brutta notizia : la prima viene mollata mentre il secondo viene licenziato. I 2 hanno la stessa idea : recarsi a Las Vegas per divertirsi (e dimenticare). Qui si conoscono e dopo una notte di follia si ritrovano sposati. Annullamento, nessun problema. Ma un assegno da 3 milioni di dollari metti in crisi la decisione. A chi spettano tutti questi soldi? Nella legge si trova la risposta ma un giudice amante del matrimonio impone 6 mesi di convivenza forzata prima di prendere ogni decisione. Riusciranno Joy e Jack a farcela nonostante i loro burrascosi rapporti data l'alta cifra in palio?

Recensione. Il matrimonio, una scommessa per la vita, ma tra 2 persone completamente diverse tra loro (una perfettina ed un disordinato). E come solo Hollywood può mostrarci (ma l'amiamo per questo) invece che a calci e a sputi tutto finisce a tarallucci e vino (poco realistico ma molto romantico e auspicabile). E 2 persone che prima si odiano finiscono per.. (indovinate voi).

Joy e Jack vivono la loro vita ma essa è priva di rischi e asperità. Ogni giorno è uguale a quello precedente e sarà simile a quello successivo. Un evento non voluto giungerà a salvare entrambi dal rispettivo torpore e li costringerà a prendere delle decisioni, ad interrogarsi, a crescere o a mostrare se stessi (una scommessa quindi anche personale). Il matrimonio, la convivenza forzata e la scoperta dell'altro contribuirà a tutto questo, non senza la magia cinematografica del ritrovamento della nostra dolce metà in colui che all'apparenza sembra la propria nemesi.

Per farlo ecco la (vecchia) trovata di una convivenza forza che prima divide ma poi unisce. Il matrimonio diventa l'arena della lotta/dell'incontro, dove convivono ripicche, vendette e stratagemmi per sconfiggere il proprio avversario. Il tutto sulla falsariga di un gioco senza troppi danni, privo quasi sempre di vero odio o di complicità sessuale, ma con qualche luogo comune. Divertimento ed ironia (con qualche vena di sentimento e di riflessione), grazie anche ai rispettivi amici del cuore di Joy e Jack e ad altri personaggi stravaganti come il giudice Whopper.

Infine meritano un appunto Las Vegas, la città del peccato e dello sballo (che qui porta alla fine ad una ricompensa, ossia di aver trovato la donna/l'uomo giusto..ma non è sempre così purtroppo) e i 2 protagonisti Cameron Diaz (la Mary per cui tutti impazzivano nell'ormai lontano 1998, ricordate?) e Ashton Kutcher (non più solo il giovane marito di D.Moore). In conclusione una divertente commedia che lascerà o/e qualche sorriso di compiacimento o/e qualche risata o/e qualche sospiro di velata invidia.

What Happens in Vegas

What Happens in Vegas ...the name and the events that lead to the trip to Vegas pretty much gives you an idea of the whole movie. Same old story, different people = Not worth time and money !!

Joy = Just dumped stock-broker (Diaz) and Jack =Just fired carpenter (Kutcher) meet up in Vegas, get drunk and get married. P.R.E.D.I.C.T.A.B.L.E !! Next day morning they realised what they've done and want a divorce. So far so good but...BAM !! Jack wins a jackpot on 3 million with Joy's quarter and they both want the money..or at least equal shares.

And they decide to settle it in court. The judge makes a ruling saying that they have to live together or the money will be taken from them forever. What starts off with a lot of scheming and back-stabbing, end in love. Again, P.R.E.D.I.C.T.A.B.L.E !!

Queen Latifah should start making better movie choices and so does Cameron Diaz. I've never been much of a fan of Aston Kutcher but I kind of like him in such roles. The movie on the whole was extremely predictable, got annoying at times too. Though, there's this one scene in particular that I kind of liked - where they're walking down some place after Joy's office retreat and you get to see the other side of both Joy and Jack. Oh and loved the golden dress she was wearing, otherwise he clothes were just so-so in the movie.

Este film protagonizado por Cameron Diaz y Ashton Kutcher, trata la historia de dos extraños, Joy y Jack, los cuales son muy diferentes, pero tienen algo en común una vida fracasada y también comparten la misma solución, viajar a las Vegas y elevar su autoestima.

Joy que estaba a punto de casarse, tenía previsto pedírselo a su novio con una fiesta sorpresa y delante de todos (sin darse cuenta, de la fiesta sorpresa) este le dice que no desea casarse. Mientras que Jack un total fracasado, es despedido de su trabajo por su propio padre.

Ambos deciden viajar a las Vegas, Jack para tratar de comenzar de nuevo y Joy porque está cansada de portarse bien, en las Vegas la pareja se encuentra y tras una serie de malos entendidos y pleitos deciden darse una oportunidad y salir a tomar algunos tragos. Los cuales se convierten en una noche de descontrol y exceso que los llevará hasta el casamiento.

Al despertar del día siguiente, Joy se da cuenta de las consecuencias de su noche de diversión, y empiezan otra vez los problemas, tras unos minutos discusión la pareja decide terminar rápido con lo que la noche anterior habían empezado, y una pelea sarcástica que termina con un “te llamo”, “te mando un e-mail”, cada uno decide tomar su rumbo, pero la suerte les juega una mala o tal vez buena jugada y Jack gana tres millones de dólares en una maquina tragamonedas con una moneda que le había lanzado Joy, segundo atrás.

Tras esto, inician una pelea legal para ver quién se queda con los millones. Es cuando un juez los condena a seis meses de matrimonio forzado, y decide congelar el dinero, durante los seis meses de matrimonio, la pareja se dedica a poner en evidencia uno al otro ante el juez, para así poder ganas el dinero.

La convivencia de la pareja es sin duda será la parte más divertida de la película, y es que las trampas y bromas pesadas abundan. Sin duda no se la pueden perder, cien por ciento recomendadas para los amantes de las comedias románticas. Es dirigida por Tom Vaughan.

Mais um filme daqueles que eu e Fiona adoramos ver: comédia romântica, água com açúcar. Sem tiroteios, sem perseguições de carro e sem grandes picos de suspense na trama, ele é só mais uma história de amor com final feliz, como tantas outras que o cinema norte-americano já produziu desde o fim dos anos 80.

O que faz a diferença neste filme em relação a todos os outros é a disputa entre os dois personagens principais por um prêmio de cassino no valor de três milhões de dólares. Só isso. Por esse motivo, eles se engalfinham e se esfaqueiam pelas costas o filme todo e, no final, óbvio, acabam juntos, com os três milhões de dólares - e quem não é feliz com três milhões na conta?

Mas o filme é engraçado. As tiradas são muito boas (não chegam a ser ótimas, mas valem a pena), tem uma certa dose de sarcasmo e uma pitada de cores, seguindo o estilo Disney de fazer filmes.

É mais um filme para se ver com a namorada, dividindo a pipoca e o refrigerante, numa tarde inocente de domingo ou numa sessão de dia de semana, cedo, depois do trabalho (que foi o meu caso), seguida de um passeio igualmente inocente de mãos dadas no shopping.

Apesar disso, acreditem, o filme faz mais jus ao preço do ingresso do que muitos dos últimos filmes que vi e comentei aqui no blog - a não ser que você odeie esse estilo de filme. Questão de gosto. E mesmo que você não goste, vale a pena conferir algumas cenas rápidas, só para ver como Cameron Diaz é feia e está um bagaço chupado (ou espremido) de laranja - nem a maquiagem conseguiu salvar.

Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel Officially F***ing Other People

You know that moment a little bit after you find out that two of your friends have ended their relationship -- the moment that follows all the sympathy and condolences, the moment of "oh, crap, they were such a fun couple, and now they won't be having those awesome BBQs anymore"? That's the way I feel about Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman breaking up. Because in the grand tradition of real-life couples Lucy and Desi and George and Gracie, their union created some hilarious comedy. Though perhaps the nature of the pieces was an early warning sign.

Silverman presented I'm F***ing Matt Damon to Kimmel as a gift in honor of Jimmy Kimmel Live's 5th anniversary (it was originally meant to be aired in November 2007 during Kimmel's birthday show, which never happened due to the WGA strike), and uploads of the video quickly appeared on YouTube in a Lazy Sunday-esque wave.

The choice of partners is deliberate, as Jimmy Kimmel has a long-standing joke feud with Matt Damon (culminating in a rage-filled appearance in September 2006), but who knew that Matt Damon could not only rap, but bust out some 90s-dance-crew moves?

And who knew that Kimmel would raise the bar so dramatically with a follow-up featuring Damon BFF Ben Affleck? I'm F***ing Ben Affleck may start off like a cheap rip-off, but soon afterwards ups the ante, both in an artistic and cast sense: the quasi-official YouTube upload lists Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Rebecca Romijn, Benji Madden, Joel Madden, Dicky Barrett, Christopher Mintz-Plasse a.k.a. Mclovin, Lance Bass, Dominic Monaghan, Meatloaf, Pete Wentz, Joan Jett, Huey Lewis, Perry Farrell, Macy Gray and Josh Groban. Sure, there are no butterflies. But there is a "We Are The World"-esque chorus and Harrison Ford in a convertible. Advantage: Kimmel.

Of course, Silverman and Kimmel didn't work together on these shorts -- both were directed by Wayne McClammy, a Jimmy Kimmel Live segment director who's parlayed his success into exciting directing gigs. But the established nature of their relationship in the public eye is what gives these pieces the additional kick. What makes "I'm F***ing Matt Damon/Ben Affleck" so much fun is that the humor of the pieces reflect that stage in a romance when all the insecurity is gone, when both partners are so comfortable with each other that they can make these sorts of tasteless jokes. Now that they've broken up, it's just a little sad, to think of the people they are now, um, f***ing.

But maybe there's a chance they got together for one last breakup music video. Everyone knows those are always the best.

Ich halte Cameron Diaz zwar nicht für die beste Schauspielerin Hollywoods, aber für eine sehr gute! Außerdem mag ich ihre Ausstrahlung, ihre Lebensfreude, ihr Aussehen und ihren Mode-Geschmack. Man liest hin und wieder in den Medien über sie und so hat sich einiges in meinem Kopf
angesammelt. Ich habe daraus die untenstehenden 10 Punkte gemacht (was vielleicht allgemein nicht so bekannt ist) und hoffe, das ihr mir vielleicht in den Kommentaren helft, die Liste länger zu machen:

1. Cameron Diaz ist unpünktlich, und kommt fast immer zu spät.
2. Cameron Diaz ist sehr abergläubisch.
3. Sie wäscht sich täglich mit dem Wasser Evian.
4. Diaz ernährt sich vegetarisch.
5. Sie ist 1,79 m groß.
6. Cameron Diaz findet sich zu dürr: „Ich mag Frauen, die ein bisschen Kurven haben, und wenn ich ehrlich bin: Ich halte mich für zu dünn“.
7. Cameron ging zur gleichen Zeit auf die gleiche Schule wie Macho-Rapper Snoop Doggy Dog. Allerdings nicht länger als nötig, denn statt Highschool-Jungs eroberte Cameron ja die Laufstege der Welt.
8. Um Fitnessstudios macht die 37-Jährige einen großen Bogen. Die Schauspielerin hält sich stattdessen lieber mit vergnüglicheren Aktivitäten schlank: „Beim Tanzen verbrennst du mehr Kalorien als beim Joggen oder Gym“, meint Diaz.
