<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" src="http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:hsa5gRqnCLwsXM:http://static.blogo.it/cineblog/SerbisBrillanteMendoza.jpg" alt="" width="126" height="84" />Brillante Mendoza è il regista filippino più conosciuto al mondo. Con "Serbis" ha portato sullo schermo una cruda rappresentazione della realtà del suo paese. E' la storia di una famiglia che gestisce una sala cinematografica dove proiettano film per soli adulti e nella quale si svolge tutto il racconto. Il business del sesso a pagamento viene svelato in tutta la sua crudezza, senza risparmiare niente allo spettatore che viene immerso nella desolazione dei rapporti omosessuali e nella compravendita di una fellatio da consumare all'interno della sala.</p>
<p>In questo contesto vengono accennate le storie personali dei membri della famiglia, la vecchia mamma che tradita dal marito perde la causa di divorzio davanti al giudice, la figlia che si riscopre bella per le attenzioni di uno degli avventori della sala, sotto gli occhi annoiati del marito, il fratello più giovane che ha appena messo incinta la ragazzina con cui si vede. L'unico barlume di "serenità" è dato dal nipote piccolo che gioca e si diverte tra gli amplessi degli adulti in un contrasto che volutamente mette a disagio lo spettatore e che rappresenta anche l'unico raggio di speranza in una realtà desolante.</p>
<p>Ciò che è veramente sconfortante è l'aura di normalità, di quotidianità che avvolge il tutto, amplificata dal costante, incessante rumore del traffico che accompagna ogni dialogo, ogni scena. La normalità che si evidenzia nella totale mancanza di un qualsivoglia rilievo etico e morale di fronte alla realtà rappresentata (solo un accenno della figlia che, infermiera professionale, si ritrova ad essere la tenutaria di un bordello). Normalità ribadita dal dialogo finale tra due personaggi, nel quale il business del sesso è considerata una delle possibili opzioni che un giovane ragazzo di Manila può scegliere sul mercato del lavoro.</p>
<p>Mendoza non ci vuole regalare la facile speranza di un futuro migliore. Si limita a fotografare la realtà e a riproporla esattamente come è. E la scossa emotiva che si prova dopo aver visto il film è l'indice che il regista ha raggiunto il suo scopo.</p>

<title><![CDATA[(A different kind of) Cannes Predictions]]></title>

<p>No matter how digitally-lazy I have become, I  have to write a post on Cannes 2008.</p>
<p>And that's because I think that it has really been a breakthrough edition. Finally.</p>
<p>Here is a spare sum-up of most remarkable works, with some considerations:</p>
<p>1 <strong>It's not about</strong><a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/film/win_1_1_01802.htm" target="_blank"><strong> the gorilla</strong></a>. I had to rule that out. I don't know how it landed the Grand Prix (I guess it's that bit of Cannes logics that I still don't get). Yes, it may be funny, but I don't see the idea.</p>
<p>(Apart from: let's put a monkey there. Monkeys are fun!)</p>
<p>(I know it's not a monkey, it's an ape)</p>
<p>(You get the point)</p>
<p>And it really doesn't matter how many people have seen it, as Cannes has never been about effectiveness. If it were, we would have seens tons of direct-response tv ads landing lion after lion...</p>
<p>2. <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/cyber/win_1_1_01026.htm" target="_blank">Impressive work </a>by <strong>Nine Inch Nails</strong>. It's so much part of their art you can't even consider it advertising. It's experiential art, and I think it belongs to a different category.</p>
<p>3. A piece of <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/cyber/win_1_1_01564.htm" target="_blank">tech-masturbation by Uniqlo</a>, that landed the Cyber Grand Prix. I don't really love it, because it seems "web tool for the sake of it", with no real idea/insight, but it's interesting as a showcase for what widgets can be.</p>
<p>4. Kudos to the <strong>Halo</strong> team at Microsoft: a<a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/titanium/win_1_1_00256.htm" target="_blank"> simple, inspiring idea </a>(ie. promoting an action game without any real action), and a very good execution. Not much interaction, and that's good: it's about becoming familiar with the Halo legend, and that's <strong>much bigger than You-User</strong>.</p>
<p>5. The <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/titanium/win_22_1_00423.htm" target="_blank">Millennium Phone </a>by Droga5 definitely deserved the Titanium Grand Prix. Just like NIN, it plays in another league, and shows how, as the digital age progresses, brilliant agencies may become all-purpose <strong>"idea factories"</strong>, well beyond communication as we now intend it.</p>
<p>6. There had to be something from Crispin, and here's the much talked-about <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/titanium/win_23_1.htm" target="_blank">Whooper Freak-Out</a>. Two considerations about this:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Reality rules.</strong> And by that I don't mean reality shows. I mean real vs virtual. </li>
<li><strong>Simple rules.</strong> How many advertising creatives in large agencies would have considered that, well, enough of a "creative advertising idea", as opposed to "a dull client idea"? And how many of them would have tried to come up with some sort of spectacular, metaphorical film imagining an imaginary Whopper-free world?</li>
</ol>
<p>And now some predictions for future Cannes editions:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Tv and Press will become marginal.</strong>  Ok, this is an easy one. With growing media convergence, there will be no point in having stand-alone "Tv" and "Press" categories, as the most meaningful works, or indeed all works, will have some sort of integration. Traditional Tv and <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/press/" target="_blank">Press ads</a> will be the equivalent of the comic strips page on newspapers: you spend only a few minutes and half a brain on them in exchange for an easy laugh, but then you move on to the real stuff.</li>
<li><strong>Cyber will become a display of tech skills.</strong> Again, with cyber being the center of creative works that will most likely feature some other media, there's no need for a separate cyber category. On the other hand, there may be a need for a category that would award technical innovation, rather than creative ideas. (If you want to know the difference, Uniqlo vs my long-time favorite <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/gamekillers/series.jhtml" target="_blank">Gamekillers</a>)</li>
<li><strong>Integrated will split.</strong> With pretty much all remarkable work going multi-media, there will be a need to split Integrated into different categories. No idea yet what those categories will be, but it's sure worth spending some thoughts on...</li>
<li><strong>Titanium will part.</strong> Titanium was born as a distant relative of advertising already, and even though in its youngest years the advertising family tried raising it under its own roof, it's now pretty clear that the two don't share much. Titanium will increasingly become a category awarding business innovation, even though it'll be still hosted in the Palace. It'll draw a different crowd and just work according to different rules. It will then part in spirit, if not in body.</li>
<li><strong>Cannes will die.</strong> Ok, that's a long shot. But with advertising, entertainment and many other industries (search, anyone...?) blending into one, single discipline of brand promotion, and creativity taking on larger challenges besides pure communication, there will be no need for an Advertising Festival. But oyster-lovers need not to be scared: Cannes may easily evolve into a different kind of festival, a mash-up of the current adv parade, the Academy Awards, a business fair and a Ted Conference.</li>
</ol>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Final Burp:</strong> Going through both works at Cannes, and daily projects here at Dare, I've been wondering way too often already: is this advertising? It doesn't look like it is. (And that was a good sign). Let's just not call it advertising anymore.</p>

Ah. Judging by the strap with the plastic doodad, I am in someone's carry-on luggage, and will soon be hurtling through the atmosphere at an altitude of 35,000 feet, at the mercy of prosaic flight attendants.</p>

Instead of bringing me to the Gutter Bar, she totes me along to talks in the Grand Palais. What need have I for the latest trends in digital engagement? I require inspiration! Someone hand me a glass of rosé!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;">Desde <a href="http://www.fumadaestrategica.com" target="_blank">Fumada Estratégica</a>, y tras el gran apunte de que a veces nos clavamos de más en elogiar o ver/difundir aquellas piezas que tienen detrás una gran cantidad de pasta para su producción, me traigo esta propaganda hecha por una dupla argentina que fue merecedora  al oro en <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/winners/younglions/?medium=FILM" target="_blank">Film Young Lions</a> en el pasado <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Festival de Cannes 2008</span></strong>:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style='text-align:center; display: block;'><object width='425' height='350'><param name='movie' value='http://www.youtube.com/v/JDc4tqShQuE'></param><param name='wmode' value='transparent'></param><embed src='http://www.youtube.com/v/JDc4tqShQuE&rel=0' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='transparent' width='425' height='350'></embed></object></span></p>
<p>Desde el punto de vista creativo, es emocionante la idea planteada por la dupla (de <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">BBDO Argentina</span></strong>) para el anunciante <a href="http://www.mtvswitch.org/" target="_blank">MTV Switch</a>. La ejecución cierra redondita amarrando completamente la idea y el beneficio que la misma busca explotar.</p>
<p>Sinceramente creo que no demerita en lo absoluto. <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Nokia</span></strong>, otro auspiciante de esta competición en conjunción con el <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Festival</span></strong>, dictaminaron que el anuncio debía ser grabado con la cámara de un <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">N95</span></strong>, misma que ostenta una brutal cámara de 5 megapíxeles y graba en un formato de buena calidad que los creativos explotaron al máximo.
</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Un gran trabajo que está completamente en <em>brief</em> , que como era requerido fue entregado en menos de 48 horas.</p>

<p>No primeiro resumão do Festival, Mentor Muniz Neto comenta as premiações brasileiras em Promo e destaca as lições aprendidas, tanto para quem quer ganhar prêmios como para quem quer se atualizar com o que efetivamente vende. </p>

<p>Joni, Jody and I took a cardiovascularly challenging stroll to Musée de la Castre yesterday afternoon, before the Film, Titanium and Integrated Awards night. Nano insisted on the more typical tourist shots, and I obliged.</p>
<p>The bar is so high my neck hurts peering up at it. But if there's one thing Cannes teaches you, it's how to jump in stilettos, preferably in silver-finished leather.</p>
<p>My next stop is Paris for a couple of days. Let's see what happens.</p>

<p>Walking to the Y&#38;R party on the Carlton beachfront, I realized the logo on the backdrop of the Y&#38;R-sponsored Rupert Murdoch talk was not a glitch in the matrix. From 100% cyan, it is now white with a thick dark blue outline. It looks like a cross between a ballet dancer and a bouncer. I'm sure it will grow on me. Like mushrooms on a log. (Okay, I'm being tetchy and uncharitable.)</p>
<p>I overslept and missed the Crispin talk. I made sure not to miss Jonah Bloom with Maurice Levy, and David Droga and Unicef for the Tap Project. </p>
<p>Angel asked me, how would you describe Maurice's hair? I said, "Leonine." It matches the Publicis lion logo. That made me think about how hair can be such a signature for ad people. There's Bob Isherwood's platinum shocker, Bob Greenberg's not-quite-tonsure and the BBDO guy who keeps going up the stage for HBO Voyeur with the if-Farrah-Fawcett-had-a-mullet. (Every time he's gone up on stage I find myself applauding his look as well as his work.) </p>
<p>Back home there's Merlee's unflappable bob, Kat's non-hair and Ompong's boucles. Boucles, I have deciphered from the intensive study of Garnier hair products at Monoprix, is curls.</p>
<p>I'm sure I'll see more hair - and more great work - tomorrow night at the Film, Titanium and Integrated Awards. A big shoutout to DM9 and TBWA for getting into the film shortlist, not a small feat considering the others on the list. I'd like to see Tan Hong Ming get metal. Previous Grand Prix winners Times of India (direct) and HBO Voyeur (Outdoor) are also in contention for Titanium, as well as big Clio winner Halo 3/Believe.</p>

<p>The show opened with Bob Isherwood apologizing for the delay, but I would have waited for as long as it took. Even the theatrical introduction to the directors' reel was a grand display of stage technique and how a live performance and video feed can work together to deliver an extraordinary experience, one in which emotion sharpens the intellectual appreciation of technique. It began simply, with the spotlight on a man (the "director" persona) walking on an elevated treadmill, and escalated to fake blood, flying styrofoam beans and gigantic cardboard walls.</p>
<p>I am a huge fan of the Arcade Fire and REM, and absolutely loved the last director on the reel, Vincent Moon. CNN has <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/02/19/takeaway.shows/index.html">an article</a> on his Take Away Shows. <p style="text-align:justify;">Después de la descalificación de <span style="color:#99cc00;">BBDO Thailandia</span> por su gran campaña, presuntamente y para goce de muchos por ser catalogada por los jurados como un truchazo, no nos queda más que darle un voto de confianza al Festival de <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Cannes</span></strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Si la pieza llegó hasta estas instancias es por su fuerza e impecable nivel de ejecución, pero nadie más que la gente de BBDO, la de OMD y la de Bayer saben cuáles espacios publicitarios compraron y cuales se inventaron. El Festival y sus organizadores no están para averiguar si una campaña es real o no, sino para brindar un evento digno de recordarse como un gran momento para la publicidad. Sí, los que deciden si se descalifica una pieza o no son los jurados, y al parecer hicieron bien su trabajo. Claro, uno piensa que los chicos de BBDO han de estar que se mueren, pero creo que todos queríamos y queremos legalidad y justicia en este tema ¿o no?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">No podía ser para menos. La recta final del Festival se pone más ardiente de lo que se esperaba y así, es como presentamos los ganadores de las categorías:</p>

It's easily the most awaited seminar during the Festival. I'm already missing the TBWA one. But work comes in only one flavor, and right now that flavor's prison guard.</p>

Y efectivamente se va haciendo costumbre que año con año las veamos ganar en los principales certámenes publicitarios mundiales, como en este caso la más nueve ejecución en <em>Outdoor</em> (que para muchos, seguro debería ser Press -y seguro lo será, porque seguro así nació-), se echa al bolsillo un bronce.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Es también una tradición el distinguible tono que utilizan estas campañas, y en esta ocasión <a href="http://www.tbwa.com" target="_blank">TBWA/París</a> nos regala una maravilla de la ilustración perfectamente cuidada, con mucho chiste y detalle, que se subieron al tercer peldaño de la premiación el día de ayer en La Costa Azul:</p>
