Please forgive the low quality of my rather less than professional photographic skills, but I just needed to record this in some way and share it with you --Today on my way home from work I actually saw someone listening to a cassette tape on their walkman.

[caption id="attachment_1092" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="A walkman on the Subway - in 2008"][/caption]

Yes, a cassette. I even saw it as he was putting it in to the device. I know the photo is really bad (imagine trying to take a picture of the man sitting in front of you without looking too conspicuous), but he is holding a walkman.

[caption id="attachment_1093" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Hard to see, but it's there. "][/caption]

I guess that the iPod bug hasn't infected everyone yet. And if there is a supply there must also be a demand.

I wonder if he gets his cassettes from that store in the Upper East Side...

I am helping out with the sound for Night Must Fall for Redwood Theatre by transferring a few music

I am helping out with the sound for Night Must Fall for Redwood Theatre by transferring a few music cues from cassette tape to CD. Such a task should be easy enough; except for the fact that my tape deck has gone dead in the four years since I've last used it. I turned to a portable player, which suffered from a terminal case of Wow. So I thought I might borrow a tape player from my friends: surely someone I know has a tape deck? Right.... I actually thought that. Anyway, my search uncovered an ancient boombox with dirty play heads and a good consumer deck which didn't have a left channel output. In the end, my success came down to a pawn shop and a recently closed recording studio. Finally!

Overall, I've listened to about fifteen-tape decks. This search has taken me back a period of my life when I lived and breathed the minutia of Cassettetech. I thrived on obsessions like signal-to-noise ratio, tape biasing and tape formulations. Remember degaussing? Oh, and how *important* it was to clean the playback heads and mechanisms with some Q-tips and Isopropyl alcohol.

Digital isn't all bad.

ROIR Records has just re-released some excellent live and historic Skatalites music on CD, LP, and digital download, which was previously only available on cassette. Stretching Out, from 1983, is historically significant because it is from the year when the band had just reconciled the differences that had driven their 2-year career apart in 1965. Peter Tosh’s manager, Herbie Miller tracked them all down to play at the 1983 Jamaica Sunplash. Prior to the big gig, the band got together for some rehearsal nightclub gigs at Miller’s Blue Monk Jazz Gallery in Kingston before a crowd of local fans, friends, and fellow musicians. There were no restrictions on the length of their sets, no barriers on soloing, and no boundaries in general…which led to a stretched out, spontaneously joyful Ska reunion.

You can feel the small-room vibe of the club in the recordings and you can almost smell the ganja smoke and feel the heat and the sweat created by those in attendance, who were most likely moved by the endless backbeat skank to dance the night away. The Skatalites are a large group of players (9 of them, with 3 guests) whose playing is as smooth as cocoa butter over the 2 hours. There never seems to be any confusion as to who is soloing and when the band comes back in; this is a group of musicians who fully support each other. And the results make it all sound so easy, as the best musicians do. The band cooks its way through classics like “Guns of Navarone”, “Confucius”, and “Lee Harvey Oswald” and flow like melting moonlight over stretched out numbers like “Black Sunday” and “Ska Ba”.

The Skatalites horn blowers are stunning throughout. They were clearly inspired by the bebop players (like John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker) and the musical freedom and boundary-bursting those players pioneered. And the Skatalites, in turn, helped pioneer the sound that would later morph into rock steady and reggae. Unfortunately, all but one (Lester Sterling-alto sax, who still blows with the band) of that original horn section has joined that big band in the sky, with the passing of Johnny “Dizzy” Moore in August of this year. But the music certainly lives on and the live music on Stretching Out is just about as lively as it gets!

And be sure to check out this review published on Blog Critics and leave me some nice comments there

I love music. I have albums in every available medium with the exception of 8-tracks (the worst idea ever). My portable cassette player is still completely functional and I use it all the time. I think I may be the only one. Carrying around a cassette player in public now is quaint. The other day, I couldn't find my iPod so I brought along my tape player for the walk to class (I think I was listening to Pearl Jam's "Ten" album). People gave me looks of absolute disgust. I think it's pretty ridiculous that people judged me based on the technology I was using. Status is determined by what mechanism you use to enjoy music. Pretty soon, carrying around a CD player will seem strange and worthy of scorn. What am I supposed to do though? I have a bunch of cassettes. Am I supposed to just let them sit unused? Once my current cassette player wears out it will be nearly impossible to locate another so I guess I should treat it extremely well.

I just hate the thought of losing the ability to listen to a certain album because a particular technology is deemed antiquated. It's not only this that bothers me. I am sick of having to constantly upgrade in order to enjoy media. The Blu-Ray disc is the perfect example. If a Videocassette costs $3.00 (if you can find one) and a Blu-Ray disc costs $30.00, there's no way that I'm going to get the film on Blu-Ray. I'm not averse to new technology. In fact, I think it's really interesting. I'm just saying that the age of a certain item (i.e. VCR) shouldn't determine it's viability. I'll be playing my cassette tapes alongside my .mp3 files until the tape wears out and the music is inaudible, a fate that has already met my copy of Stevie Wonders' "Innervisions." I will not, however, listen to my tapes in public since the American populace has officially buried the Walkman. Who wants to be pariah?

I have alot of mixtapes from way back when and I thought it would be good idea to archive my collection. At the very least document them so that I won't forget what was actually on them. I haven't heard what was on these in nearly a decade, so I thought it would be nice to revisit them and get a little nostalgic while sharing them with anyone interested. Ahhhhh cassettes, can it be that it was all so simple then?*

*I need to stop using that phrase when I do posts that deal with reminiscing and nostalgia.

This one was from high school and was one I borrowed from a friend but never returned.(That's actually her handwriting on the tape) Alot of filipino dance artists like the ones you see listed in the picture were what was originally on this. I don't know if M:G is filipino or not but the rest are. Even Kai to my surprise. I had no idea they were filipino! I bought the "Say You'll Stay" CD single way back when it came out and I was like, "oh, an all Chinese singing group...cool." I mean Kai isn't really a filipino name or word or term is it? I thought it was maybe Chinese or Japanese in origin, but obviously I was wrong.

The thing that surprised me upon revisiting this tape was the scratch practice I recorded. It was my skills at their very "best" and by "best" I mean completely sub par to mediocre. Usually when I hear an old tape of me scratching I cringe and cover my ears with my hands, but there were actually moments on this where I sorta impressed myself...sorta. I'm normally extremely off beat and sloppy, but on this I was uncharacteristically clean.

Donate, sponsor, or Pledge on a per-km/mile basis, anything will help.

In this post we're going to delve into Shimano components. We've recently reviewed the mountain component sets, and here are the road sets.

Road- These components are designed for road use which means they are usually lighter and more durable. They are able to take repetition and speed and continue functioning at peak performance.

Entry-level Road Component Group:

Sora. The Sora component group is comparable to the mountain bike Deore set . This group of components is considered to be low entry-level. This package of components would be found on most of the cheaper stock bikes you see at your bike shop. It is designed for recreational riders and should not seriously be considered as an option for your long-haul tour. Most of the components in this package are made of aluminum and could not be expected to hold on long enough for a serious rider or tour. Expect an unreliable crankset. While these components may be acceptable for some riders, for a touring bicycle, they won't do.

[caption id="attachment_140" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Sora Component Package"][/caption]

Shimano Tiagra- This is the next step up on the Shimano component ladder. Comparable to the mountain version called Shimano XT, this package features hyperglide (HG) sprockets for slick usage. It is designed for cross-country riding and trekking. It is still consider to be an entry-level component set, but more acceptable for touring than the Sora components. There is a slight weight improvement when upgrading from Sora to Tiagra. Consider this as 'decent' or 'somewhat acceptable' for your long-haul tour.

[caption id="attachment_141" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Tiagra Component Package"][/caption]

Mid-level Mountain Component Group:

105- The 105 component package is where casual riders make the jump into the realm of serious bikers. Superior performance without serious money. That describes the 105 line very well. It is like getting a present without wrapping paper. The components aren't super light, but they are smooth and reliable. Sounds good enough for me. This is where you should start for a serious long-haul journey. Anything less than this and you are risking failure. Sure, if you are doing city commuting, the Tiagra components are fine, and if you are teaching your kids to ride a bike, the Sora will do. But for touring, this is the starting point.

[caption id="attachment_133" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Deore XT Component Package"][/caption]

High-level Mountain Component Group:

Ultegra- This is getting to the top of the line. Designed for hardcore professional racers, the Ultegra components are lightweight, well crafted, and designed. You're going to get better craftmanship and a pretty much universal weight reduction on most of the components in this set. This package is something to consider if you are really looking to ensure a couple of thousand of miles on your bike with absolutely no problems.

[caption id="attachment_142" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Ultegra Component Package"][/caption]

There's still more with Shimano....

Dura-ace- This is the serious stuff people...titanium, super light-weight, nickle-plating, etching, you name it, it's here. If you've got the money, go for it, if not, stick with the 105 or Ultegra.

Comparing the weight of the front derailleur of a 105 or a Dura-ace....232g vs. 180g...

Donate, sponsor, or Pledge on a per-km/mile basis, anything will help. Thanks.

In this post we're going to delve into Shimano components. Why Shimano? Well, this are probably the most popular kind of bicycle component on the market, available in just about every bike shop you can find. High (and low) quality, well-price, and accessbile, sounds great. BUT, knowing what kind of Shimano components to buy can be complicated. Shimano has sets of components with names and we're going to try and simplify it all right here and now. We'll divide the components into MOUNTAIN and ROAD.

Mountain- These components are designed for mountain use which means they are usually heavier and stronger. They are able to take abuse and continue functioning at peak performance.

Entry-level Mountain Component Group:

Deore. This group of components is considered to be entry-level. This package of components would be found on most of the cheaper stock bikes you see at your bike shop. It is designed for recreational riders and should not seriously be considered as an option for your long-haul tour. Most of the components in this package are made of aluminum.

[caption id="attachment_131" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Deore Component Package"][/caption]

Shimano Deore LX- This is the next step up on the Shimano component ladder. This package is designed for cross-country riding and trekking. It is still consider to be an entry-level component set. The weight on this set is less than the regular Deore, and the crankset is improved. Consider this as 'decent' or 'somewhat acceptable' for your long-haul tour.

[caption id="attachment_132" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Deore LX Component Package"][/caption]

Mid-level Mountain Component Group:

Deore XT- The XT component package starts to offer some higher quality products to riders. You get an imporved rear derailleur, better quality parts in the crankset, and more weight reduction in some of the parts. Shimano says that this is the line to go with if you want superior performance without serious money. This is true.

[caption id="attachment_133" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano Deore XT Component Package"][/caption]

High-level Mountain Component Group:

SLX- This is the top of the line. Designed for hardcore professional racers, the SLX components are very lightweight, extremely well crafted and designed, and expensive. Almost not even worth considering these options unless they happen to be on sale and you just won the lottery. We will put up some price comparisons shortly, so look for them by the end of the weekend. I think it'd be safe to stick around the LX and XT level components for your bicycle tour, but it's up to you.

[caption id="attachment_135" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Shimano SLX Component Package"][/caption]

The Shimano road component packages and price comparisons are coming up soon, stay tuned and donate or pledge towards the Set Sail the Prairie on a Surly cause. Your dollars go to the Mercy Corps who is currently working in countries along the route. Cheers.

Knowing exactly what kind of components you get on a bike is extremely important when deciding on which touring bicycle to purchase.

Let's look at the types of bike components first, then we will discuss the different options with Shimano.

Some of the components that you can upgrade on your touring bike are (there are others):

Rear Derailleur- This helps when moving the chain between rear sprockets. It takes up the slack in the chain when moving to a smaller sprocket at the rear or a smaller chainring by the front derailleur. Est. Price for a Shimano Ultegra Rear Derailleur is about $100. Here's a picture.

[caption id="attachment_120" align="alignnone" width="81" caption="Shimano 6600 Ultegra Rear Derailleur"][/caption]

Front Derailleur- The front derailleur moves the chain from side to side between the front chainrings. Estimated price for a Shimano Ultegra front derailleur is about $70.00.

[caption id="attachment_121" align="alignnone" width="96" caption="Shimano Ultegra Front Derailleur"][/caption]

Crankset- The crankset is where the rider is connected to the bicycle. It is the component of a bicycle that converts the motion of of a biker into the rotational motion needed to move the chain. This is what the pedal is connected to. The estimated price for a Shimano Ultegra crankset is about $250.00.

[caption id="attachment_122" align="alignnone" width="96" caption="Shimano Ultegra Crankset"][/caption]

Bottom Bracket- The bottom bracket allows the crankset to move freely. The estimated price of a Shimano Ultegra bottom bracket is about $40.00.

[caption id="attachment_123" align="alignnone" width="96" caption="Shimano Ultegra Bottom Bracket"][/caption]

Cassette- The cassette is the cluster of gear cogs or sprockets attached to the hub of the rear wheel. Power is transferred from the biker, to the crankset, to the chain, and to the cassette. This is where the gears come from. Typical cassettes have 9 cogs, which when combined with 3 chainrings, gives a rider 27 gears.

He de seguir chafardeando...

While browsing recent YouTube uploads of Faye Wong (王菲) songs, I found this interesting karaoke video. The song is "A Small Wish" (一個小心願), first released in the album Where Comes the Wind (風從哪裡來) when Faye was 15. The album was released as a cassette by Yunan Audio and Video on 15 June 1985. (Click here for an earlier article about this album.) In 2003, Focus Music Ltd., China, released a CD version.

What's interesting is that the video is badly out of sync with the audio. (See the video below.) Obviously, she was singing a different song in the original MV. The producers simply dubbed the audio over the video and added the subtitle lyrics. The result is a mature Faye singing in a 15-year-old's voice. But what's even more interesting is that the combination actually works, telling us that, at 15, Faye's voice was already surprisingly mature and beautiful.

When I compared the video audio to the version on the 2003 CD, I realized that they were different, either remixed or completely different recordings. I then searched online for other versions and came across a recording in Imeem similar to the video audio but of better quality. The 2003 recording has been re-engineered to HDCD specs, highlighting the innocent child-like quality of Faye's 15-year-old voice. The other version seems more natural, a bit more mature. (See comment by Anonymous below.) Here are the two versions:

The version from Irene's Imeem site, uploaded 8 months ago. It's similar to the Karaoke video.

(Added to YouTube by Linjw on 19 Aug 2008)

Comment from Anonymous 9.1.08: The You tube and Imeem versions are taken from her album covering teresa teng’s songs “fei mi mi zhi yin” [track 11 in The Decadent Sound of Faye, July 1995] which is why it sounds more updated than the 2003 version, which is very 80s.

Films als Set it off, New Jack City, Boyz 'n the Hood behoorden tot mijn favorieten.

*Biggie: These excerpts from Faith Evans' forthcoming book, which talk about how Tupac briefly (but quickly and efficiently) insinuated himself into her life, are actually a pretty good read.

*Subscription music: Is iTunes Unlimited, an all-you-can-listen music option rumored to someday cost $130/year from Apple, imminent?

*Beer: Jessica Simpson has become the spokesperson for Stampede Light Plus beer. Personally, this does nothing at all to diminish my love of beer. People: I am resolute. [buzzfeed]

*Pop music: Mountain Dew has started a singles-only record label, Green Label Sound, that will feature bands such as Cool Kids. You know what's even better than Mountain Dew? That Red Alert stuff. Or Code Five or whatever the fuck it's called. [listening post]

*Gadgets: The Apple Walkpod: a cassette-playing iPod. [bb gadgets]

*Local: The Bryant Lake Bowl is throwing a block party. The Rock for Democracy block party is set for Saturday, September 13 from 4pm-10pm, and will feature Brass Messengers, Prairie Sons and a surprise headliner. Also: roller girls! [mfr]

*Bar bands: NPR interviews the Hold Steady. (Craig Finn does not tell Thom Yorke to "Eat a dick." Which is a prime indicator that this is not, in fact, Grade A beef.) [heavy critters]

*Idol: People who are either insane or are hardcore American Idols fans (I would love to see the Venn diagram of these two groups) can now Sajaya-ize themselves. Of course, that's a Cardinal sin. But still.
