Apparently, most pirates aren't as lovable as Johnny Depp. Yesterday we went sailing on a catamaran owned by an Italian man named Ryan. Ryan has his own story to tell. His catamaran, bought with his retirement fund, was stolen by pirates last year. It was missing for months, then he had to spend a month in Belize proving it was his boat. He still looks over his shoulder.

He and his son took our family, two Italian couples and a couple of young Italian women who were clearly a bit distracting for Ryan's son. You just wanted to cheer for the poor guy when he finally managed to hook us up to the buoy before our snorkeling. It took him a few attempts with his Dad barking instructions, and these things matter a lot, I presume, when you're a young guy being watched by girls in teeny bikinis. It was painful to watch.

Our kids loved sitting on the netting on the front of the catamaran, especially when they were engulfed by rough waves as we pounded through the water. So rough we turned around and headed for a calm cove earlier than planned. Erik gave me his glasses to hold so he wouldn't drop them. So, I dropped them overboard instead. After we anchored, our guide, Ryan's son, led us snorkeling through another set of beautiful reefs. He did a little bit of Show-Off Snorkeling for the girls, shooting down to the ocean floor then drifting slowly back up. The effect was actually a bit frog-like, which probably wasn't what he had been going for. But it was still fun to watch.

The water on the surface was choppy and rough. But just under the surface all was serene, colourful and fascinating. I felt more in control when our heads were under the water and I could forget how far we were from the boat, and how rough the waves were. It's best to just focus on the beauty. That is almost always true.

Last night Brent had his last Bible Survey class for the youth. He did the entire New Testament in one night. Which seems admirable. I feared for him that he would have to deal with yet another birthday cake, cut into huge slab like pieces like we have been contending with all week. But, thankfully not.

Holly had her hair braided this morning. We went to Wendy's house. She is the wife of one of the students who took Brent's preaching class. We sat on her porch, surrounded by kids coming and going and a puppy that gnawed on my foot most of the time. Wendy's great grandmother was a Scottish woman who came to Roatan and fell in love. She had 11 daughters, one of whom was Wendy's grandmother. She was a black woman with long, straight hair whose eyes got bluer the older she got. That became a family trait. Eyes that got bluer the closer you were to death. None of the kids ended up "clear" though. Clear means white.

Wendy's cousin came half-way through and pitched in with the braiding. One of my favourite things is to sit around and listen to woman-talk. Of course, this depends on which women are doing the talking, but that goes without saying. These women talked about their kids, their husbands, slipped in and out of English and Spanish and other dialects. It was surface. Then it was deep. Then it was surface again. That's usually how women do it. I joined in a bit when I could, otherwise, I just let the breeze drift over me and watched the waves in the distance. Holly is now a beaded, click-clacking wonder.

Atravesado al viento

Creo que ha hecho fotos todo el pueblo, incluida yo claro. El problema es que el otro día anduve haciendo fotos por la noche y me olvidé de cambiar la sensibilidad así que mis fotos han salido quemadas. Afortunadamente existe el "voy a tener suerte" de picasa y alguna que otra foto del catamarán varado en la playa de levante se ha podido salvar.

Pobre barco, semejante bellezón y abandonado a su suerte por una tripulación que parece haber  salido por patas directamente.. Flipante. Incluso si se trata de un barco alquilado, si te gusta la vela... ¿cómo puedes abandonar a su suerte un pedazo de barco como ese? No entiendo nada.

Depredators.- Felicidades Pedro por tu excelente resultado y la excelente pesca que conseguiste realizar en el embalse de Benagéber. ¿Podrías habalrnos algo de los patrones y señuelos que utilizaste?.

Pedro Álvarez.- Las primeras picadas las tuve pescando en los cortados peces suspendidos entre 6 y 8 m en una pared vertical de 30 m de fondo. Para las primeras capturas emplee una spinnerbait blanca de ½ oz de Strike King y un vinilo Basstrix de 4 pulgadas al estilo texas. También conseguí algunas capturas en zonas con cobertura vegetal pescando al Drop Shot y con un jig de Chimo Baits.

Depredators.- ¿Qué nos puedes decir del fantástico entorno y de los basses de Benagéber?.

Pedro Álvarez.- Sin duda se trata de un lugar fántastico para la pesca; uno de los sitios mas bonitos e impresionantes en los que he pescado Bass, sobre todo un gran cañon rodeado de pinos que estuve pescando… ¡solo estar allí ya merece la pena!. Los basses parecen dopados con anabolizantes, con una fisnomía muy robusta, un color espectacular y una enorme potencia a la hora de tirar de la línea.

Depredators.- ¿Algo mas que te gustaría decir y se te queda en el tintero?.

Pedro Álvarez.- En las zonas con menos concentración de peces, trabajé los crankbaits paralelamente a cortados y estructuras sumergidas. En concreto el Luhr Jensen Hot Lips y el Combat Flat de Evergreen. Sin duda me llevo un muy buen sabor de boca de este embalse de Benagéber, un destino para tenerlo en la agenda.

Depredators.- Felicidades Pedro por ese primer puesto que te otorgaron tus 5 Black Bass y un peso de 7,350 Kg y suerte para el resto del Circuito de Pesca del Bass desde el Pato.

My gripe is not with the milestones, but with those people who insisted on them being set, then insisted on them being brought forward to make them look good - they had to be seen to be "moving things along", and keeping the project "on track". Of course, had they been barred from the whole thing, it would have run more smoothly, met the original milestones, and not have to have been repeatedly rescheduled to compensate for their interference - but then they wouldn't have been able to stand up and announce how the they had  "fixed things" and kept the plan from being even later than it was now going to be.

We mentioned that the Pentalina catamaran was due to arrive in Scotland at the end of May, or shortly thereafter, now we need to correct that. She's still at FBMA Marine's yard at Cebu in the Philippines, awaiting more equipment, and is now expected to leave the yard early next month, and arrive here about 28 days later. Things look good, and she is also reported to have successfully completed her sea trials.

Announcing plans is a necessary evil that can't be avoided, but I always think it's something best done in a flexible and non-committal way. That way, no-one can notice your "best laid plans" haven't quite hit the mark.

Ca fait du bien de se sentir privilégié aussi de temps à autres. Et bien voila ce qu’on ressent lorsqu’on peut s’organiser un petit week-end Catamaran au large de La Rochelle. C’était le week-end du 1er juin. Pour ceux qui s’en souviennent, il a fait un temps superbe à La Rochelle !

Vu qu’on était un groupe d’une dizaine d’amis, samedi, c’était « levé à 9h30 sur L’ile d’Oléron pour être à midi sur le Port de La Rochelle ». Dès le levé sur l’ile, on se disait bien qu’on allait avoir beau temps, mais aussi beau pour notre première sortie en catamaran au large de La Rochelle, c’était inespéré !

Ici quelques photos de notre excursion en catamaran. Vous verrez qu’on s’est plutôt amusé, et cela dès le départ du port de La Rochelle !

Notre excursion:

> Initiation aux petites nausées également (fallait pas avoir avoir mangé des Huitres avant :-)

Au large de l’Ile de Ré on a opté pour la baignade en plaine mer. L’eau était à 18.5 degrés, un ciel sans nuage, un Catamaran tout beau tout neuf… L’extase totale.

Vous pourrez même vous amuser à nager en dessous du bateau et faire coucou à travers les hublots !

That's because of all the rain that falls in Vancouver in the Spring. I hear it's not any better in Calgary because they forecast rain all this week. Two weeks ago when we were cruising Eastern Canada and New England, we were lucky to escape the rain on several occasions. Rain greeted us when we arrived in Montreal but after sailing away, it was sunny in Quebec City, Halifax, Charlottetown, Bar Harbor and Boston. We got rained on just one day, when we were in Sydney.

If and when you travel to St. Lucia, bring your umbrella. To avoid the rain, you might choose to go there between January to May because June to December is considered to be their wet season. Because of the rainforest, it practically rains everyday at the same time. When we were there, we would tour the island in the morning, do alittle shopping in Castries then by 4pm, it would pour. Around 6:00pm, the sky would clear up and the air gets humid.

The main attractions in St. Lucia include the world's only drive-in volcano, botanical gardens, twin pitons and the soft sandy beaches. Getting around is easy with most tourists taking a cab between the resort and Castries market or by water taxi if you want to get to the beach. I do not recommend renting a car and driving yourself, unless you are ok with hair pin turns and wild island driving. 

The must-do activity is to take a catamaran down the west coast of St. Lucia. For about $90 per person, you board a catamaran and sail to the Soufriere area where you take in the drive-in volcano, waterfall and botanical gardens. As you sail in, you will see the two Pitons as they rise up from the ocean. People actually hike up and climb the Pitons. On your return sail, the catamaran will stop at Anse Cochon where you can do some swimming and snorkelling before sailing into Marigot Bay. The captain will tell you that pirates used to frequent this bay to hide their treasures. Nowadays, you see luxurious yachts from all the world in Marigot Bay.

If you want to visit St. Lucia for a day, find a Caribbean cruise that stops there. Otherwise, if you want to spend a week relaxing on the sandy beaches, you might want to look into a Sandals Resort.

Navettes de luxe.

Après s’être mis « tous au vélo», les Parisiens se mettront bientôt « tous à l’eau ». Non , il ne s’agira pas d’une stricte interdiction de boire de l’alcool (bien que le gouvernement réfléchisse à l’interdiction du Happy Hour) mais bien d’un nouveau moyen de transport en commun dans Paris ! La navette fluviale nommée Voguéo, devait être expérimentée à partir du 1er juin 2008. Bertrand Delanoë, le Maire de Paris, concepteur de ce projet a vu les choses en grand. Voguéo, ne sera pas une simple navette de style « péniche à touristes » mais d’un catamaran ! Ce seront quatre catamarans qui vogueront au fil de la Seine d’ici quelques semaines. En vue de cette spécificité, un délai supplémentaire a été nécessaire afin de convertir ces superbes bateaux en moyen de transport en commun classique.

Un métro au fil de l’eau...

La navette reliera Paris gare d’Austerlitz à L’Ecole vétérinaire de Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne). Cinq escales sont prévues à ce jour : Gare d’Austerlitz - Bibiliothèque François Mitterrand / Tolbiac (à l’aller) - Bercy (au retour) - Ivry Port - Maisons Alfort Ecole Vétérinaire.
Prendre Voguéo sera très simple puisqu’il sera accessible à tous les détenteurs d’un abonnement RATP tels que les cartes Oranges, la carte Intégrale, les cartes Imagine’R, les cartes Améthystes et Emeraude, les forfaits de gratuité et cartes CST. Pour les voyageurs occasionnels, le ticket à l’unité sera d’un montant de 3 E. Il est certes plus cher qu’un ticket de métro (1,50 E) mais le voyage n’aura rien de comparable !

Un test grandeur nature.

L’expérience Voguéo durera deux ans et permettra d’évaluer certains critères comme celui de la clientèle, de la régularité... Tout cela dans le but d’offrir aux Parisiens (mais aussi aux touristes) un service de transport fluvial plus complet et plus ambitieux. Celui-ci devrait voir le jour en 2010.

Built to serve on the Pentland Firth route between Caithness and Orkney, the new catamaran, The Pentalina, will replace an older vessel on the same route. With a capacity of 350 passengers, 32 to 58 cars, and nine lorries, she is expected to make the crossing between St Margarets Hope, Orkney, and Gills Bay, Caithness, in around 45 minutes.

Built for Pentland Ferries, Pentalina was constructed at the FBMA Marine Yard, Cebu, in the Philipines, the new vessel is undergoing sea trials in south east Asia, and will make her own way to Scotland when these are completed, taking around 30 days to complete the journey, after which she will enter service, probably at the end of May, or shortly thereafter.

It took Vittorio Malingri just 13 days, 17 hours and 48 minutes to sail 2,545 miles from Dakar, Senegal to Guadeloupe, Antilles. This Italian sailor didn't make the crossing in your average boat however, he made the crossing single handed aboard Royal Oak, a 20 foot beach cat!

L'article est composé de 3 parties :

  • une présentation du principe et un historique mentionnant le Williwaw (1970) et le Charles Heidseick IV (1984).
  • un partie consacrée aux multicoques à foils, avec une remarque intéressante de Marc Van Petegem (VPLP) qui estime que le développement des foils suit actuellement 2 directions:
    • les hautes vitesses, donc vaincre la cavitation
    • la polyvalence, qui implique de pouvoir décoller dans peu de vent, et c'est cette direction qu'il poursuit avec le Syz & Co (qui devrait être mis à l'eau fin mai apprend-on par la même occasion)
  • la fin de l'article est dévolue au vol en monocoque, avec l'historique des Moth à foils et le développement du 18 pieds australien AET de Thomas Jundt

Ce hors série contient bon nombre d'autres articles intéressants, sur le Vendée Globe et sur la Coupe de l'America (évidemment), mais aussi sur Tabarly ou les MOD70 (mais... ils ont des foils!), la photo marine ou et les vieux gréements.

Il se termine avec un cahier lémanique consacré au Lac et ses vents, à ses régates, aux D35 etc.
