It is the first thing to consider when looking for a place to set up your place of business. Accessibility of your office from your home, your employees’, and especially from your clients’ place is also important. Your new office must also serve your company’s present and future-expansion needs to avoid costly transfer of office, not to mention the costs of our government and miscellaneous permits and registrations.

Office spaces usually come in “different packages”. Some may be available as bare, while others are ready-for-occupancy (RFOs, as we often call it). Others come furnished with cubicles, rooms and centralized air-conditioning system.

Most of the buildings in Makati City and Ortigas Center have also started to operate 24/7 and even upgraded their amenities as their response to the increasing number of BPOs in the Philippines, not to mention our local IT-related companies, language schools, and recruitment & training centers.

Building amenities and accessibility to food, transportation, shopping and recreation are often considered by most companies. We are lucky these days that most buildings have now started opening their ground floors to food chains, coffee shops, and convenience stores.

As I remember, before the arrival of these BPOs in our country, say before year 2000, we could see a calm business districts on weekends, especially on Sundays because there were no work then on weekends—thus, no convenience stores, food chains and coffee shops on every block then.

Unlike these days, there are Starbucks, Ministops, Jollibees, and McDOs—almost everywhere!!!

Having an office within the central business districts gives you greater advantage than those who are not -- good business address, easy access to your clients, better telecommunication facilities, great building amenities, and secured place of business.

18 marzo 2008

5°) - Olio cotto di cannabis, per uso alimentare: Come si prepara: A) – ridurre l’infiorescenza di Cannabis in piccoli frammenti e metterla nella pentola; B) – aggiungere olio (o burro) quanto basta, l’olio deve coprire bene i fiori (1:10 - 1:20 – 1:30, in base alla % di THC presente nell’infiorescenza ed alla desiderata concentrazione di principi attivi); C) – aggiungere acqua, 4 – 5 - 6 cm (tanto, la si dovrà far evaporare, lentamente, tutta…), per evitare surriscaldamenti ed allungare il tempo di cottura, per una buona estrazione; D) – mettere con coperchio su fiamma bassa e far bollire; E) – quando sta per svanire l’acqua allontanare dalla fiamma il tegame, perché l’olio surriscaldato farebbe vaporizzare i cannabinoidi, far svaporare tutta l’acqua e continuare a mantenerlo caldo (a circa 80°: non bollente, no frittura!) per almeno 5 minuti; F) – lasciare macerare per 1 giorno e filtrare;

a) Cannabinoidi naturali, Cannabis Flos: • Bedrocan ® • Bedrobinol ® • Bediol ®

Tabella 1. La famiglia dei cannabinoidi naturali
tratta da "Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base" [5]

Tabella 2. Cannabinoidi sintetici
tratta da "Therapeutic uses of Cannabis" [6]

“[...] the purpose of abstraction is not to be vague, but to create a new semantic level in which one can be absolutely precise.” – Edsger W. Dijkstra

“But there is a more sensible way to SOA, which maintains loose coupling and drives high cohesion and the secret is this: build your services to implement business processes. Don’t let the data guys scream at you that you need an enterprise data model (you don’t) and don’t let the application portfolio guys demand that you buy everything and stitch it together later (you can’t, this only gets you Frankenstein systems).” Anemic Service Model , Jim Webber, Ph.D. Global Architecture Lead, ThoughtWorks.

"[...] Software developers have known for years that software that changes frequently should be decoupled from software that changes infrequently. When applied to individual programs and systems this principle is sometimes called The Common Closure Principle. When it is applied to the information management of an enterprise, it is called SOA. [...]"

Vídeo interessante relacionado com SOA sem ESB: Does My Bus Look Big in This?, Martin Fowler & Jim Webber, QCon London 2008. Um post também interessante relacionado: SOA, cuts the Gordian Knot -- Not, Uncle Bob.

Orchard Rd sales up
By Yeo Ghim Lay
RETAIL sales in Orchard Road went up, not down, after the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) network in the shopping belt was expanded.

That is according to a Land Transport Authority study.

In October 2005, ERP gantries in Orchard Road started operating on Saturdays. ERP hours on weekdays were also extended from 7pm to 8pm.

But in the year after the changes, sales went up by 9per cent, more than double the 4per cent growth the year before.

The figure is also higher than the growth rate for businesses outside the Central Business District during the same period, Transport Minister Raymond Lim said yesterday.

He cited the figures in response to Ms Irene Ng (Tampines GRC), who had asked about the social and economic impact of more ERP gantries and longer operating hours.

Mr Lim noted that many factors could affect businesses.

'While retailers within ERP zones have given feedback that ERP is one of the reasons their businesses have been affected, they recognise that their business outside ERP hours has also been poor,' he added.

Mr Lim also assured the House that ERP gantries are not erected pre-emptively.

Rather, traffic situations along congested stretches of roads are studied over several quarters before any gantries go up.

The five new gantries along the Singapore River, for example, were put up after complaints received, over time, about slow traffic in the area.

Another MP, Mr Zaqy Mohamad (Hong Kah GRC), wanted the restriction on the driving of weekend cars on Saturdays removed.

Currently, off-peak cars can be driven only from 3pm onwards on Saturdays. Those who wish to drive them before that time must display a $20 day licence.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Teo Ser Luck said a change to usage restrictions for off-peak cars would mean changing the tax concessions for such cars as well.

'However, not all off-peak car owners may agree to a reduction in tax concessions in exchange for such additional benefits,' he said.

Originally posted at Edible TV on September 9, 2008.

As a former resident of Nashville I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Dinner: Impossible where Chef Michael Symon had to cook a meal for Country/Southern Rock legend Charlie Daniels. Symon's first stop was the immortal Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville where he met Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen (he was Nashville's mayor during my days in Music City).

For those who did not grow up with the Grand Ole Opry playing a major part of their childhood then the sheer weight of standing in the Ryman will likely be lost. For most of the 20th Century the Ryman was the home of the Opry and many a star has graced this hallowed stage like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams (the first one), comedians Jerry Clower and Minnie Pearl, and long time host Roy Acuff. The front lobby of the auditorium includes a simple park bench with the bronze figures of Acuff and Pearl as they share of laugh. My first visit and consequent view of this site sent chills up my spine. For a Southerner, this place is the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge rolled into one.

From there Symon made the 45 minute drive out to the new home of the Grand Old Opry, the aptly named Grand Old Opry House at the Opryland Resort. The Opryland Resort is the largest hotel in the world not located in the city of Las Vegas. Symon is given the keys to the groceries found within the hotel's many gourmet restaurants. A favorite spot of mine when I lived in Nashvegas was the Cascades in the Atrium of the main hotel. Oddly enough the executive chef at the time is now a fellow chef here in the Mobile area, Mike Wallace of the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort in Point Clear, Alabama.

When the challenge was issued of cooking dinner for 300 country music fans (well 301 if you count Daniels) in eight hours with the full Opryland Resort (it also houses a culinary school) at his disposal it seemed like a gimme. But Symon and his team were thrown a series of road blocks. They had to theme their menu around the CDB classic The Devil Went Down To Georgia. The only food item mentioned in the song was chicken. The only chicken in the hotel was boneless, skinless breast meat. Symon's pride in his art left him no choice but to scratch the inferior product from the menu.

Another obstacle for Symon and crew was that the chef himself was required to join country music newcomer James Otto on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Again memories of my time in Nashville came rushing back as Symon (donning a Porter Wagoner approved glitzy rodeo shirt) strolled onto a stage far different than the one he is used to in Kitchen Stadium. And far more intimidating as well. I, too, have stood on that stage in front of that crowd and faced the decades of tradition that surround it. My result? A standing ovation – one of the proudest moments of my life. Symon also found the folks of Middle Tennessee cordial and gracious. They would later find his food remarkable.

In fact, they would demand his culinary creations be delivered in less than the alloted eight hours. That of course was the last of the encumbrances to Symon and his crew. But as usual the Iron Chef came through with a stunning menu that pleased all if not totally overwhelmed them, even Charlie.

so ... this is singapore . the iconic view of the CBD in 2008 . it was june , i was in singapore for the holiday and i waited for the evening to take this picture from the esplanade roof .

so strange . i felt kinda strange being there because it was different . i was alone , actualy more than that , i was lonely ... hehehehe ... and looking at this great view and knowing that it's the last time i would ever see it live and knowing that it's nothing and nobody for me in this beautiful place made me sad . singapore is just the way anybody who had the chance to go there would tell you that it is . amazing . like no other place . but you need to be there more than the usual 3 days or one week vacation . explore . singaporeans will tell it's small and there's not much to see . but from the outside , it's the best place to start enjoying asia . for a european , it's perfect if you want to discover what asia has to offer because it's a melting pot . singapore is not perfect , especialy from a political point of view , but it really depends what you want from life . for me singapore was the best time of my life . it was perfect for me . and for a while it gave me everything that i needed . and it gave me love . the second time there , last june , it was different , i was different . it was like visiting an old friend after a long time , after you lost contact . colder , stranger ... but the feelings were still there .

thank you singapore !

I played tourist last weekend. Grabbed the no-frills digital camera and my legs, and went in search of the treasures of Melbourne in early Spring. I grew up in Melbourne, and frequented the city centre regularly as a child. My grandmother, a school principal and biology teacher (Russia) turned factory-worker, sewed toilet bags and shower caps for a Jewish factory in Little Collins Street, and I used to go in with her, sometimes to be shown around to her work colleagues so they could tell me I had beautiful skin (nobody tells me that now), or to deposit her wares and have lunch. These are the memories I cherish - of the mysterious worlds within buildings, old, cage-like elevators, dark passages and illuminated cafes in arcades. Thankfully, much of old Melbourne remains to this day. I love the details and little surprises around the city.

I then tooled over to the St. Bernard parish line. These parts of the city are still so damaged. If you don't live over here, don't have friends and family over here, you might forget that. The TV shows the Quarter, isolated parts of the levees or the river, but never this part of New Orleans. This traffic light was downed, but I don't have any idea if this is the result of Gustav, Katrina, or just general disrepair. Regardless, the ride was a reminder that New Orleans isn't simply "back," no matter how much the media trumpets our progress. People still live out here, are trying to come home. It is sad to ride around here and feel like some neighborhoods have simply been written off and written out.

Ogni anno questi microorganismi provocano oltre 18 mila decessi ospedalieri

arrivare presto in quelle europee e americane.

fonte: repubblica.it

This is not the case for Brissos. They avoid most crowded places, especially the CBD, and if forced to go there for work or dental appointments, will hurry through the busy streets avoiding eye contact, getting from A to B as quickly as possible (Buskers are aware of this and play near hotels where visitors to the city might pass by).

In the city, Brissos will avoid eye contact and seem very uncomfortable

If you do have dealings with Brissos in such settings, they will be guarded and formal. Their polite exchanges will seem stilted, old fashioned and almost English in their lack of sincerity. This would not be worth noting if not for the striking contrast with their uninhibited behaviour when in public with peers.

Brissos Code of Conduct

Domain #1 Private –– casual? (unknown)

Domain #2 Public with peers –extremely casual, uninhibited often to the point of un-socialised.

Domain #3 Public, without peers – formal, extremely inhibited

If you ask a Brisso about their #3 public manner - “You don’t seem yourself? is there something wrong?” – he/she will assure that you all is well. If you have his confidence, he might reveal he is just aware that he is being watched. People he knows are everywhere, judging him, finding fault, just waiting to report to others about it. It will eventually get back to his mother (or mother’s friends) with terrible consequences.

Now here’s the thing. In other places, if someone tells you this you wisely see it as a sign of mental illness, paranoia, regression. You immediately think about getting him or her help. But for Brissos things are different. Brissos are not paranoid. What they say is true. They really do know just about everyone in the city, and a walk down the street with the head up would lead to an impossible number of time-consuming conversations and awkward greetings. Social ties and obligations are at an intolerably high level in such dense settings. People they know are indeed everywhere, watching them, waiting to notice some behaviour they can report, with spin, to friends and family. If the Brisso lets down his/her guard for a minute, consequences can be disastrous.

“I saw Martin in DJs trying on the kind of shoes only gay men wear. He was talking to a woman who was dressed like a prostitute, and I think he had something... a gift? in a Wallace Bishop bag”

And this information, with disputed variations, will eventually get back to his mother or mother’s friends and/or wife, with difficult consequences.

This effect is magnified for the Greek or Italian Brisso.

Many astute business people choose to do business with Brissos in restaurants in such public places, because Brissos are more docile and agreeable in such settings.

In spite of their highly regulated public demeanour, Brissos revert to primitive form when driving through those same city streets in their cars. In this sense they are like urbanites from other cities, maintaining an illusion of privacy, and will unashamedly pick their nose or check their makeup as if noone can see them.

I think one of the best ways to realise the myriad ways Sydney does transport wrong is to take a visit to Melbourne.

Having just returned from a weekend in Melbourne what better time than to highlight the differences!

(As always there is so much to say on Melbourne vs Sydney I will have to revisit this topic at a later time)

- Lets begin by saying that anyone with a rational mind is going to be attracted to Melbourne's layout. Melbournians have a lot to be thankful for and one of them is the foresight of the city's designers who came up with the Hoddle Grid. The grid makes for an open and easily navigable CBD. A key feature of the grid is it's wide streets. According to wikipedia:

"The wide main streets were also to accommodate the large number of bullock carts that would ride through the centre of town preventing them from holding up horse drawn traffic when making right turns."

As fortune would have it these wide streets are what allowed the streets to accommodate Melbourne's now famous tram system.

Much of Melbourne's growth continued to be planned on a quasi-grid system (albeit at 30 degrees to the CBD).

Whatever the science says about Hub-and-spoke vs Grid transport designs, it is quite obvious that a design (Melbourne) is going to be better than no design (Sydney).

Sydney's design - sorry, I mean layout - is at best a charming mélange of lanes and freeways, and at worst a chaotic, organic mess. Taking a drive around Sydney you are quite likely to see 5 or 6 road intersections, and some of the craziest spaghetti junctions of all time (see northern approach to Harbour Bridge - Warringah Fwy).

Unfortunately, any organism whose circulatory system is inefficient at pumping its lifeblood will eventually fall to the back of the evolutionary pack. The problem with cities is they typically only get one of two shots are getting it right before its too late to change.

What Sydney needs is some open heart surgery. And as with open heart surgery the trick is how to keep the patient alive while crucial arteries are disconnected. I'm buggered if I am qualified to work that one out but I'm sure its hard if not impossible.

In my next post I will take about the Melbourne Trams.
