Menurut berita dari detikinet, pihak bakrie telah menyiapkan kurang lebih 10 ribu perdana Esia dan 500 nomor Wifone di kotakota tersebut. Penjualanya sendiri sudah dimulai dari tanggal 17 Juli 2008 dan akan berakhir hingga 20 Juli 2008 di Gerai Esia dan juga Moro Mall. සී.ඩී.එම්.ඒ යනු 3G ජංගම දුරකථන සහ දුරකථන කුළුන අතර සබැඳීමට තරංග මාලාව යොදාගන්නා තාක්ශනය හැඳින්වීමට භාවිතා කරන "සිප්යුරු" වදනයි. 3G ජංගම දුරකථන වල තරංග හැඩය කේත ගත කර ඇත. එම කේතය දුරකථනයෙන් දුරකථනයට වෙනස් වේ. එම තරංග හැඩයේ ඇති කේතය අනුව දුරකථන කුළුන විසින් එක් එක් 3G ජංගම දුරකථනය වෙන් කර හඳුනා ගනී. එම නිසා සියලුම දුරකථන වලට සම්පූර්ණ පුළුල් පරාසයම භාවිතා කරන අතර වැඩි දුරකථන ප්‍රමාණයකට එක වර ඇමතුම් ගත හැක. මෙම තාක්ශනික සංකල්පය හඳුන්වන්නේ CDMA යන නමිනි. එෆ්.ඩී.එම්.ඒ වලටත් පෙර භාවිතා වූ ටී.ඩී.එම්.ඒ තාක්ශනය දැනට භාවිතා වන්නේ රැහැන් සහිත දුරකථන පද්ධති සඳහාය. නමුත් අප ගෘහස්ථ රැහැන් සහිත දුරකථන වලට ටී.ඩී.එම්.ඒ කියාවත්, ජී.එස්.එම් දුරකථන වලට එෆ්.ඩී.එම්.ඒ තියා ජී.එස්.එම් වත් නොකියන අතර ගෘහස්ථ දුරකථනයක් "ලෙස සැරසූ" 3G ජංගම දුරකථන සඳහා  CDMA නමින් හඳුන්වන්නේ මන්ද? එය ඇත්ත වශයෙන්ම  3G ජංගම දුරකථනයකි. ජංගම දුරකථනයකට තැපැල් ලිපිනයක් දීම නම් මහාම විහිළුවකි.

"This scheme of things have few advantages over Cell ID Triangulation:

#1 unlike Cell ID Triangulation  its independent of Network  Signal Strength at any given location [because its GPS assisted] so you can point location to a greater accuracy

#2 DUE To SIM + GPS combo I Think it  will be possible to  provide  location  info even when  you are roaming on other network .

#3 we did some tinkering around with Cell ID info and tried to map it with GPS Co-Ordinates on MY N95. accuracy /precision  was more in GPS mode but funny thing was how fast and randomly the Tower ID changed within a stretch of 2 KM on a HIGHWAY while GPS thing was more steady, so useful for feeding into a Trail kind of application.

One of the group members, contacted "Velipekka Kuoppala, Vice President Sales and Marketing of BlueSky Positioning" for the benefit of all of us. Here is a summary of an email conversation he had with Velipekka Kuoppala, Vice President Sales and Marketing of BlueSky Positioning. Some of the doubts about their  technology is cleared  in his replies.  He was kind enough to agree for posting this conversation on blogs and groups and also to answer another round of queries so if anybody wants to ask something specific please let us know.

So, here is the info straight from his mouth:

Does deploying your offering require physically changing/ replacing SIM Card or is it a SIM Tool Kit which can be pushed OTA?
Veli: SIM change is needed. It's a hardware/ software solution. Afterwards different applications can be handled via OTA.

There was a rumour that it can be detected via GPS even when the Cellphone battery is off?
Veli: Off means off! That rumor is plain wrong.

What is the accuracy  of positioning (Error range ) ?
Veli: Like any other A-GPS technology. From few meters up to ~35meters.

How its better than Cell ID Triangulation?
Veli: The relevant point is: ROI for operators offering LBS will be directly proportional to the number of subscribers who can be located. To enjoy maximum return from location-enabled services, operators should logically select a technology, which is available to all wireless users and which provides the best price/ performance ratio. 

Just think on country side, where you have one base station each 10-20miles – triangulation does not give any needed accuracy for any kind of LBS applications on that kind of conditions. Emergency situations being the most important ones.

Mr. Graham Curry, Assistant Operations Manager for the Lancashire Ambulance Service, offers the emergency services' perspective: "Over 50 percent of calls to the emergency services are now made via mobile phones, and current estimates suggest that over 1 million emergency callers across the EU are unable to indicate their location each year. In an emergency situation it is critical that we reach the person in distress as quickly as possible, and the ability to provide accurate location information via mobile phones could mean the difference between life and death."
 
In city areas, some applications (there are hundreds of these) need even a few meter accuracy and some not – when needed, like with several tracking apps,  triangulation is not suitable for that. Cell ID itself is quick and good with its limitations, and is rather complementary than competing technology versus GPS. While starting talk about triangulation – we start as well to talk about additional cost.

Is this available for CDMA?
Veli: Each basestation has GPS receiver build in, and there are many GPS phones available under CDMA technology. Saying that, the business case in CDMA is not very strong.

The above conversation indeed gave some insights on this technology. However, we will have o keep our finders crossed until we see this technology being adopted by telecom companies. I strongly beileve however, that it may be added to the new SIM cards being developed but companies will not be able to do it for the ones already in use...

Bukan bermaksud membela GSM Operator atau pun menyalahkan CDMA Operator. Tapi perang tariff disini seperti Bus Kota melawan Busway.

Terpancing dengan Busway selalu kampanye bebas macet atau entah karena cash flow yang makin mepet atau tekanan para stock holder yang “marah” karena revenuenya turun, kini para GSM Operator pun sibuk kampanye bebas macet.

Padahal kita tahu, sampai kapanpun selama infrastrukturnya tidak sama, maka busway akan selalu lebih lancar daripada buskota. Lha wong dia punya jalur khusus.

Sama dengan CDMA yang punya infrastruktur teknologi yang memang membuat mereka lebih murah dari GSM.

Lihat iklan Esia di kompas kemarin, sangat provokatif.. “jangan tergoda dengan GSM yang sok murah” – ma’af kalo kurang lengkap.

Padahal kalo kita tilik lebih detail, busway itu punya kelemahan. Yaitu kaku alias sudah terkotak. Mereka hanya bisa jalan dimana jalur mereka ada. tidak seperti bus kota yang sangat flexible. Bisa berhenti dimana saja dan kapan saja.

CDMA pun sama, tidak flexible. Hanya berkutat dimana dikode areanya saja. Jika ingin pindah maka ada sederet “birokrasi system yang berjalan”.

Kenapa tidak kembali bercerita ttg keunggulan GSM? Kalo sampai hari ini setiap orang punya HP 2 buah (GSM dan CDMA) itu berarti, switching barrier dari GSM itu masih cukup tinggi. Kenapa bukan ini yang di leverage?

GSM itu punya dukungan Coverage yang luas dan flexible. Kemudian para produsen handset pun masih “menyayangi” mereka dengan mengeluarkan handset GSM yang jauh lebih canggih dan bervariasi dari CDMA.

Sekarang antar GSM mulai saling “bunuh”. Ga tahan dengan Rp. 1 per detik XL, Telkomsel mengeluarkan Simpati PeDe yang Rp.0,5/detik.

Jika Harga Murah adalah Key Attribute yang utama dari para customer, maka ada baiknya dengan terus kampanye ttg manfaat-manfaat lain dari GSM sebagai cara untuk memperkuat switching barrier.

Harga itu untuk mendorong customer spending alias meningkatkan ARPU. Sedangkan value added membuat customer ttp bertahan.

Hey GSM Operator, don’t go deeper of Price War. Get back and focus on your own field. Ada minimum operation cost yang tiap industry harus bayar. Price hanyalah salah satu Marketing Mix. Start over from Product. Explore your product and Coverage. We cannot be the best of everything. Pick one or two of your very best skill and focus on it.

Busway itu emang lancar, bagus untuk orang yang ingin cepat dan jarak jauh. Bus Kota itu flexible, walau macet dikit dan tarif jauh dekat beda tapi kita bisa berhenti dimana saja kita mau.

Membangun Kekuatan kita yang significant akan menutupi kekurangan kita.

Hmm coba kita flash back beberapa persaingan keras dalam tahun ini :

Yamaha vs Honda, Kuku Bima vs Extra Joss, Astro vs Indovision, Mie Sedap vs Indomie..

So many.. baik yang satu kategori ataupun lintas kategori.. sebut saja persaingan ‘panas’ Coca Cola vs Sosro, Esia vs Para Leader Operator Selular baik GSM maupun CDMA.. Lets talk about the Marketing Strategy rather than focus to certain Brand.

Perang Terbuka! Yap itu gambaran yang bisa saya simpulkan, mereka ga lagi pake strategi “Desa Mengepung Kota” atau Bangun Fondasi yang kuat baru menyerang. Lihat, mereka menggunakan budget yang kurang lebih sama besar. Mereka bahkan membangun Asset yang langsung menggurita (ingat case 3 yang langsung memiliki BTS banyak di Jakarta dan Bali), membuka distribusi yang luas. Mereka tidak hanya berani Perang Harga, Tapi juga Perang Sumber Daya! Psst… beberapa bahkan berhasil mengganti Rule Of War. Irit ke Kencang, Pulsa ke Talk Time. Huff..

Keberanian mereka Head to Head langsung dengan para Raja benar-benar Amazing, Hard Ball alias Hancurkan the strongest point of competitor benar-benar dilakukan. Hasilnya? Beberapa dari mereka sempat menjadi Market Leader, membuat kalang kabut sang market leader, kembali ke tag line lama pun dilakoni sang Raja demi me-reminder orang-orang kalo dia masih jadi sang Raja.

What Happening Now? Kenapa Tekad para Challenger ini adalah menggusur sang Market Leader secepat mungkin? Apakah para Leader yang mulai kelihatan melemah dan kegemukan sehingga terduduk? Atau memang para Challenger lebih paham kepada pasar?

Dengan menggunakan perintah wvdialconf, modem cdma venus vt-21 ini dapat terdeteksi dengan baik. Kemudian dengan mencari tahu lewat google akhrnya didapatkan config dasar untuk terhubung ke starone.

Konfigurasi ku masukkan, mencoba menjalankan wvdial, ternyata masih belum bisa terhubung. Wvdial memberikan pesan sebagai berikut

--> The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error.
--> We failed to authenticate ourselves to the peer.
--> Maybe bad account or password? (exit code = 19)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> I guess that's it for now, exiting
--> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 19)

Heran dan bingung, aku pun makin mencari di google, untuk kemungkinan config yang berbeda atau spesifik dengan modem venus vt-21 ini. Didalam tengah kebingungan, aku pun ingat kalau Yodi Aditya juga menggunakan koneksi starone untuk koneksi dari kamar kostnya.

Bersama dengan Yodi, modem venus vt-21 itu tadi kemudian diuji "kebenarannya". Pengujian dilakukan dengan menggunakan modem venus vt-21 dan kartu starone prabayar Yodi untuk koneksi. Hanya dengan bermodal config hasil wvdialconf dan sedikit penyesuaian dari config yodi yang sebelumnya, koneksi dengan starone pun segera terwujud. Hmm.. berarti bisa diambil kesimpulan, venus vt-21 dapat digunakan di Linux.

Langkah pengujian selanjutnya yaitu dengan menukar perangkat koneksi. Dari pc menggunakan Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105 milik Yodi, dan kartu starone yang sebelumnya aku pegang. Dan hasil pengujiannya pun nihil. Wvdial memberikan pesan error yang sama, yaitu authentication error. Ditengah keheranan, Yodi pun segera mengontak ke call center starone dan menanyakan kenapa nomer yang aku gunakan tidak bisa terhubung internet. Dari Yodi pula, aku juga mengetahui kalau pesan error diatas juga akan dihasilkan oleh starone bila pulsa yang digunakan dibawah 5000 (starone hanya mengijinkan koneksi internet jika pulsa lebih banyak dari 5000). Setelah melakukan registrasi dan berbagai macam hal, nomer yang aku gunakan masih belum bisa terhubung ke internat. Penjelasan dari pihak call center starone, aku diminta menunggu verifikasi dari pendaftaran internet yang sudah aku didaftarkan. Sementara menunggu itu, aku bertukar dengan Yodi untuk sementara waktu. Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105 aku bawa dan sebagai gantinya modem cdma venus vt-21 aku tinggal di Yodi.

Setelah aku coba menunggu satu minggu ternyata tetap tidak kunjung hasil, akhirnya aku putuskan untuk mencoba menggunakan nomer starone yang baru. Setelah diregistrasikan nomer-nya, kemudian didaftarkan untuk terhubung internet dengan mengirim sms berisi "NET" ke 799. Jika pendaftaran paket data internet berhasil, maka akan mendapat sms balsan dari 799 yang berisi

Registrasi PDSN berhasil. Layanan Paket Data Starone sudah aktif

Proses registrasi tersebut membutuhkan biaya sebesar Rp 5500. Oleh karena itu, jika menggunakan perdana baru, jangan lupa juga untuk segera diisi pulsa agar proses mencoba koneksi tidak terganggu dengan pulsa.

Dengan nomer yang baru, dicoba pada Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105, langsung terhubung dengan baik. Kecepatan koneksi pun bisa dibilang acceptable untuk melakukan ssh ke inner-ring UGM :)

Untuk config wvdial, perbedaan yang paling signifikan antar masing-masing mesing yaitu terletak pada Init1 dan Init2-nya. Seperti yang bisa dilihat pada config yang dimiliki yodi

walaupun sama-sama menggunakan Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105, bahkan memang Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105 yang sama, hanya mesin Linux yang berbeda, bisa menghasilkan konfigurasi yang berbeda. Secara umum konfigurasi Init1 dan Init2 didapatkan dari proses wvdialconf. Sedang untuk Init3 dan Init4 didapat dari googling :D

Untuk konfigurasi dengan menggunakan modem cdma venus vt-21, aku perhatikan dari konfigurasi Yodi tidak perlu memasukkan Init3 dan Init4 sudah dapat terhubung.

Saat ini aku sedang mempelajari sifat dan reabilitas koneksi starone ini dengan keperluanku.

Penyangkalan

• Walaupun "tokoh utama" operator disini adalah Indosat Starone, aku sama sekali tidak ada kaitannya dengan proses promosi starone. Kalau sampeyan merasa terpromosi, ya itu urusan sampeyan :D
• Pengujian perangkat hanya sebatas pada dua benda modem cdma venus vt-21 dan Nokia 6600 Nokia 3105
• Tulisan diatas tidak mengulas tentang tarif paket data starone dan segala sangkut pautnya
• Tulisan diatas juga tidak akan mengulas kelebihan-dan-kelemahan antara starone-prabayar dan starone-pascabayar. Jika ingin membahas silahkan tulis saja di bagian komentar karena kemungkinan besar tidak aku komentari :)

Jadi, selain bisa berinternet dengan modem internal, piranti ini dapat mengakses ponsel lain dan menjadikannya sebagai modem. Asalkan ponsel tersebut didukung dengan infrared atau bluetooth sebagai penghubung keduanya.

Nah di Tips CDMA ini, saya menggunakan ponsel nokia 6265 yang diset sebagai modem HTC Touch yang bersistem operasi Windows Mobile 6.0. Langkah-langkahnya sebagai berikut :

Langkah 1
Aktifkan Bluetooth di kedua piranti, kemudian lakukan pairing. Caranya, dari menu utama PDA tsb, pilih "start">"setting" kemudian pindahkan ke tab "connection lalu pilih "bluetooth".
Lihat di kolom yang muncul, pilih 'add new device', setelah itu PDA akan mencari piranti lain (ponsel) bluetooth lain. Jika sudah, pilih dan masukkan kode pairing.

Langkah 2
Masih di tampilan yang sama, pilih nama bluetooth ponsel CDMA anda kemudian beri tanda centang di bagian "dial up networking".

Langkah 3
Sekarang bikin koneksi baru. Caranya, dari menu "setting" geser ke tab "connections" kemudian pilih menu "connections". Pilih "add a new modem connection".

Langkah 4
Jendela selanjutnya ada kotak "enter a name for the connection", contoh disini saya isi 'cdma'. Nah di kotak "select a modem", pilih "bluetooth" kemudian klik 'next'. Pilih modem yang akan digantikan (contoh disini nokia 6265), lalu klik next.
Selanjutnya, masukkan nomor dial koneksinya, berarti kita masukkan #777, untuk koneksi internet operator CDMA.

Masukkan username dan password koneksi sesuai dengan operator yang anda gunakan. Kolom domain tidak perlu diisi.

Sekarang kita coba koneksi baru tadi, masuk ke menu "setting" geser ke tab "connections" kemudian pilih menu "connections". Pilih "manage existing connections". Nah pilih cdma (nama koneksi anda) tekan agak lama kemudian pilih "connect". Selamat mencoba.

Setelah gue telusuri, ternyata informasi yang ditongolkan tersebut JELAS-JELAS melanggar etika per-gratisan. Gue sebenarnya kagak pengen nulis masalah ini, namun beberapa rekan seperjuangan gue, membisikan biar informasi ini diberikan dalam rangka melontarkan rambu-rambu phreaking GSM/CDMA.

Untuk itu, gue mewakili kalangan Phreaking Indonesia menghimbau kepada anggota forum yang masih baru supaya bisa bertindak bijaksana dan tidak menyebarkan informasi secara terbuka. Berikut ini beberapa hal mengenai keadaan saat ini.

1. Forum Phreaking  itu merupakan wadah pembelajaran dan ujian praktek dalam rangka mempelajari sistem komunikasi di Indonesia. Seluruh hasil yang dikeluarkan di forum hanya untuk media testing dan tidak boleh dipublikasikan  secara luas.
2. Upaya mempublikasikan secara terang-terangan ke publik, akan mengakibatkan para suhu/master phreaking enggan memberikan ilmunya kepada member baru. Tindakan ini juga akan mengakibatkan trafik data suatu operator meningkat mendadak/drastis dan jika operator tersebut belum siap, bisa mengakibatkan gangguan jaringan selular.
3. Forum tersebut (saat ini) boleh diikuti siapa saja, yang penting bisa bahasa Indonesia, bahkan oleh orang-orang operator sendiri. Hal ini dikarenakan proses pendaftaran di forum tersebut tidak memerlukan validasi macam-macam. (menurut penerawangan gue sih.. banyak orang2 operator nongkrong disini.. xixixiii.. )
4. Hasil phreaking yang dilakukan merupakan hasil dari usaha keras dan penuh perjuangan. untuk itu hormatilah para suhu/master yang sudah berbaik hati memberikan ilmunya. Selain itu hasil phreaking sebaiknya dipergunakan dengan bijaksana.
5. Tindakan copy-paste dari hasil forum ke dalam website/blog pribadi atau diluar forum, adalah merupakan TINDAKAN TERKUTUK dan TIDAK PERPUJI. Apalagi kemudian mengambil untung dari hasil COLONGAN tersebut. Tindakan copy-paste juga mengakibatkan orang malas belajar.
6. Tindakan membocorkan phreaking secara terang-terangan dengan menggunakan nama orang lain (mengatasnamakan seorang master phreaking), juga termasuk TINDAKAN TERKUTUK
7. Bagi yang mau menuliskan hasil phreaking ke website/blog pribadi, seharusnya dikonfirmasikan ke dalam forum terlebih dahulu. Selain itu, pemberian informasi juga mengikuti rambu2 yang telah ditetapkan.
8. Bagi yang udah bisa phreaking sendiri dilahkan publikasikan berdasarkan etika yang berlaku. (tapi kalo menurut gw sih kagak bakalan diekspos vulgar,.. sebab udah ngerasain sendiri bagaimana susahnya nyari celah gratisan.. xixixii..)

Demikian kira2 point pentingnya.. sebenernya masih banyak sih.. cuman kalo kebanyakan malah kurang menarik ya.. jadi kayak Undang-Undang aja ntar...

O iya.. sorry.. gue tidak bisa memberikan cara-cara ber-SMS atau ber Internet Gratis, sebab akan melanggar kode etik suatu forum phreaking. Tapi menurut saya harga itu sudah cukup layak untuk pda CDMA tercanggih saat ini..bahkan di amrik sekalipun, walaupun sudah keluar type penerusnya yaitu ppc 6900....tapi saya lebih memilih mogul ini sebab ada qwerty keyboardnya dan tampilannya yang lebih elegan.....

Udah gitu yang sangat mengiurkan adalah telah tertanamnya chip GPS di dalam hand phone ini, masalahnya Chip GPs ini belum di buat autonom dalam registrynya ....sehingga memerlukan beberapa trick untuk mengaktifkan GPS ini.

Wifi juga sangat penting untuk saat ini karena dimana2 mall2 menyediakan hotspot gratis sayangkan kalo kita ga bisa memanfaatkannya....

Pernah dengar merek hape CDMA Nexian? Atau sudah pernah pakai? Atau malah sekarang lagi bingung cari driver CDS4? Saya hampir yakin kalau sampeyan nyasar sampai kesini karena pertanyaan yang terakhir.

Sama. Saya juga bingung.

Pertama kali pegang hape ini saya perhatikan kok colokan buat chargernya sama dengan colokan USB. Bisa buat modem nih... Pas saya colok kabel USBnya, kedetek sih, tapi kedetek sebagai CDS4. Device macem apa nih? Mana engga dikasih CD drivernya lagi.

Liat di Device Manager, ternyata hape ini punya ID macem begini:

USB\VID_15EB&PID_0001\5&2ECE8171&0&2

Buat yang belum ngerti, rentetan huruf di atas maksudnya device ini vendor-ID-nya 15EB dan product-ID-nya 0001. Setelah itu saya engga ngerti.

Setelah mencari lewat Mbah Gugel pake keyword VID_15EB&PID_0001, saya nyasar ke web ini. Disana ada file INF supaya CDS4 bisa dikenali. Setelah saya coba instal INF-nya, memang betul, hape ini kedetek. Bisa buat modem dong?

Eits, nanti dulu. Engga taunya, setelah INF di install, muncul dua device baru, INTF0 dan INTF1. Daripada pusing-pusing akhirnya tanya lagi ke simbah dan nyasar ke sini. Kalau mau donlot driver Nexian di situ aja.

Tapi emang saya lagi sial, driver donlotan ini engga mau diinstal di laptop saya yang OS-nya Windows XP SP3 ini...

The first images of two new Nokia CDMA phones have surfaced thanks to a now dead public Nokia webserver.

The Nokia 8208 features styling identical to the N96, right down to the sliding music controls and also features EVDO Rev. A data access, 2.2 inch QVGA display, Bluetooth with stereo audio support, GPS support with a built-in transceiver, 3.0 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, microUSB port, microSDHC expansion slot, and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

The 3608 features external touch sensitive music controls, internal GPS transceiver, microSDHC slot, voice control, and FM radio.

What is interesting about these two phones is the ambiguity of Nokia’s statement regarding Series 40 availability on either with the “Series 40 Nokia-like UI” statement, which lends itself to speculation that the production is being outsourced to another local manufacturer.

Both phones are expected to launch in China through China Mobile’s CDMA service, though no announcements have been made about a possible American release, despite the fact that the phones were listed with CDMA 800/1900 access.

The question:  Is it (way) too little (way) too late?

At the meantime, regarding Powell's analysis of the sociological and economic literatures on exchange, we see that transactions can take place through “loose collections of individuals who maintain impersonal and constantly shifting exchange ties, as in markets, or through stable networks of exchange partners who maintain close social relationships” (Uzzie, Vol. 42, 1997). The key distinction between these systems remains the structure and quality of the exchange ties, because these factors shape all expectations and opportunities. According to Powells, the ideal-type atomistic market links the exchange partners by arm's-length ties. In Qualcomm's case, sociological ties were completely broken. Chinese market did not welcome Qualcomm, neither government, manufacturers, nor customers (at first). To see the true reasons for this, we should come back to one of the assessment dimensions – history and traditions.

Historically, China has been a country of mystery for the Western world, thus it is always a pressure to start a business with a billion population mysterious market. Imperialistic Confucianism mentality have been growing in Chinese people for centuries. Empire's replacement by communistic structure aggravated the relationships with Western world even more. For thousands of years the majority of the population consisted of illiterate peasants, who were thought to be influenced by the examples of their rulers. In this society, the highest and most prestigious positions were political generalists, as for example members of the emperor's council and provincial governors. Experts, such as tax specialists or physicians, were ranked below the ruling political representatives. Regardless commerce has been a major element of Chinese everyday life since the beginning of imperial period, and wealthy merchants have been major figures in Chinese cities, Confucianists dishonored merchants. Commercial success was never in respect, and wealth, based on commerce, was a subject to official taxes, fees, and sometimes confiscation.

Even though the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949 replaced the uncertainty, risks and partial instability "by an increase in the scale of organization and bureaucratization" then, as a consequence, an "increase in predictability and personal security" (CIA World Factbook, 2004), the country still remains true to its political idolatry. Today it is no difference in the upper level governing mechanisms. Disrespect to the business field is one of the causes of the difficulties of doing business with this country.

When Wu Jichuan, the minister of posts and telecommunications declined to attend the presentation of one of the largest business deals in the history of China, it was a great spit in the American businessmen’s face. China's "socialist system, with state ownership of most industry and central control over planning and the financial system, has enabled the government to mobilize whatever surplus was available and greatly increase the proportion of the national economic output devoted to investment" (CIA World Factbook, 2004). This was great reason to enter Chinese market. But regarding the fact that Chinese people are trustful to their government and used to do whatever they are told, Americans are unlikely to spread their mobile fashion as fast as they would have done in European Union, for example, if it was invented before the GSM system launched. Chinese are very loyal to their traditions and whenever something new comes, they are keen to listen to the opinion of the leaders first. Thus, second Qualcomm's biggest mistake was to ignore government's approval of the project in Public Relations. If this country launched CDMA system in exchange to the US vote for China's membership in WTO, the American politicians should have made sure all necessary PR and advertisement was done to the product with the official approval. But for some reason Chinese stayed with GSM, regardless it was three times slower than CDMA.

Also, until 17th China was a recognized world leader in technology and scientific discovery . Plenty of Chinese inventions - paper and printing, magnetic compass, the lift lock for canals – were the major contributors to the economic growth in Europe and the Middle East (China Historical development, July 1987). These are the facts that are  well known in the Western countries. But many businessmen that are working in the technological sphere don't pay attention on the issue that under the last two dynasties, the Ming and the Qing (1644-1911), China's ruling elite consentrated on its humanistic subjects: literature, arts, and public administration. They "regarded science and technology as either trivial or narrowly utilitarian" (Library of Congress Country Studies, July 1987). What is it to do with the 21st century technological boost? Chinese are honoring their history much more than Americans and are sometimes over conservative in their views. Together with the fact that they are the following the leader's directions, this country is hard to persuade in anything.

American businessmen also missed the fact that China's middle class is different from American. The majority of Chinese people residing in cities nowadays are looking up to the new technologies. But the reason United States keeps most of its production business in China is because of cheap labor. Thus, people just don't earn enough money to buy a $350 CDMA network mobile. Such high price was, of course, explained by the company's need to cover expensive CDMA handset, but the majority of Chinese, unlike Americans or Europeans, are unable to pay this price. Also, in manufacturing terms, Asian countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have become leading global players in hardware, where as innovations and software have immerged in Singapore, India and the Philippines (Rao, Madanmohan, and Lumita Mendoza. Thus, the local companies are much better off in spreading their business, than the foreign ones, the major reason is that the national companies have started the introduction of their mobile systems in those countries much earlier, than Western countries. Thus, today, in order to change the wireless systems to the more advanced will require huge investments and research. Chinese communications leaders wanted to cheat Americans by demanding the design of the chips that run the CDMA systems. Thus, they would give the design to the local companies and start the production CDMA systems by the local companies without paying royalties to Quallcomm. Thus, they would promote the national businesses rather than the foreigners’. This situation reveals a strong Eastern characteristic of standing for their own well fare, rather than American’s or other western country. America supported China in the entrance to the WTO, but China failed to be open to help America to establish its technological systems. They did their best to avoid Americans from their market. China understands that they are dependant on US on the international Arena, but still try to prevent its dominance over the national business. Although this characteristic is somehow similar to the American’s mentality, as we are quite patriotic as well and are doing our best to keep the national companies in the winning market position.

Regardless the major differences in conducting business in Western against Asian countries, the success of the system in the East was inevitable and the product is accelerating in growth. To make the market penetration easier, every American businessman is obliged to keep in mind those differences. Of course, it is hard to put all differences in principals into one formula and state that it works. Learning differences creates red flags on the business road and states, where a manager should turn, jump, stop or run faster.

A decent number of studies in the international marketing and management have focused on the identification and discussion of major differences across Eastern and Western business worlds. One of them is Jean-Emile Denis, the author of the "Culture and International Marketing Mix Decisions". He views the culture as the center of all social interaction processes. Thus, it is expected that the impact of culture on communication decisions is more clearly identifiable than on any other marketing mix variable. According to Denis, "culture will affect the type of roles depicted in ads, and the choice of themes which relate to underlying values and norms. Advertising budget and structure will depend on buyers' habits and consumption style, that is on values and norms" (Denis, University of Geneva). Qualcomm completely depended on Chinese Unicorn to introduce the CDMA system, but the latter was promoting his own product with the certain advertisement approach. What would happen, if the same company states that two different systems are the best? They should state the priority to one product in promotion. But CDMA appeared to be a competitor for Unicorn, thus creating a competition within the company.

The approach to business also lies deeper in the philosophical values of two parts of the world. West is very individualistic and competitive: personal success is a guideline for everybody else to follow. Where as eastern countries are more into harmonious teamwork. The success of a team (company) is a standard tradition for other companies to follow. The meaning of competition was brought to the east by western countries and emerged through industrial revolutions. Currently, eastern companies are building their competition on the market stability. For example, if a company produces soaps and has been doing it for years, it already has its own market and it is highly unlikely that it will bankrupt because of the competitor’s pressure. Simply laws in the eastern countries are such as it is hard to compete with a few companies that are traditionally trusted. It is already a tradition in the western countries as well, for example Nokia is not likely to loose it’s respect, unless it introduces a completely bankrupting mobile model.

It is also very important to differ Islamic and Buddhist countries. Islam is the initiator of Jihad, the conquer of the world and the triumph of Allah. Even in business it is noticed quite well. War in Iraq was partially due to the fact that it was impossible to conduct free market business there. In the Buddhist countries is almost the opposite – they are more close to themselves. Anti-globalizm movement in China is a good example to it. Loyal to its traditions, the majority of Chinese population finds globalization unnecessary and very hard to handle. Thus, China’s participation in WTO is very controversial for the population. Those that are excited about the world and migrate to either USA or just like to travel are much more exposed to globalization tendencies, but those that are more conservative and stick to their culture are unlikely to change their mind and use imported system. Thus, China is divided in perception on imported goods.

Thus, a research center that was opened by Quallcomm is a very good idea for the company, as it will need to have good knowledge about the culture, if it wants to penetrate the market deeper and have a long term commitment. The company will also need to address human resource development techniques to prepare it’s management for the business conduct in Asian countries.

Human resource development could be done through various ways. First, the company should introduce training sessions for its managers on Asian business management, cultural ethics, traditions, language, etc. To succeed in business, like in any other field, one has to understand the surroundings and then to master the market and lead a fair battle. The program should start as a very intensive and after the company’s decision makers have the basic knowledge, they keep on developing their knowledge through different conferences and seminars, organized by the businesses in Asian countries. As overall regions strategy is going towards international cooperation, many Asian companies are eager to provide guest speakers and lecturers on certain business issues. Such organizations, as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organize conferences on Human Resource development. For example, in collaboration with ABAC, APEC helps to promoting sustainable development in the Asia Pacific Region. “Through a series of workshops and seminars, APEC experts met to discuss issues, challenges and to share best practices to build capacity for a Recycling-based Economy (RBE) in APEC” (Human Resource Development. APEC). The organization also conducts various seminars on buisness development, such as: Innovations in Entrepreneur Development, Capacity Building Program for Trade and Investment Insurance Practitioners, Human Capacity Building, Responding to Change in the Workplace: Innovations in Labour Management Government Cooperation. The latter is the most progressive program in terms of volume of information and practical approach.  APEC elaborates on the benefits of LMG cooperation in terms of: economic benefits for both economies as well as organizations; social and political benefits; and how Labour Management Government cooperation helps workers to better realize their human potential (Responding to Change in the Workplace. As many people are protesting against Rogers about their recently-unveiled cell phone plan structure for their highly anticipated iPhone, another competitor Bell decides to fight off against the iPhone by unveiling a new cell phone called the Samsung Instinct. The good things about the Samsung Instinct is that the plan includes totally unlimited data usuage as opposed to the 400MB data usage imposed by Rogers. Telus, another company is also launching a new cell phone and just like Bell, the plan includes totally unlimited data usage.

The phone that Bell will be releasing is the Samsung Instinct. Telus on the other hand will be releasing the HTC Touch Diamond.

Bell's unlimited internet access plan will cost $10 CDN per month and the Samsung Instinct will be selling for less that $150. Telus on the other hand will be offering the same thing, just like Bell - with a few differences:

Telus will offer an unlimited e-mail plan for $15 CDN per month or $30 CDN per month for e-mail, internet and instant messaging.

In other news, a website called oilchange.com has somewhat acquired the highly popular website ruinediphone.com. No word on why and how the ruinediphone website has been acquired. As for the recently concluded wireless spectrum auction in Canada, it is expect by next year, new carriers will be up and running and the competition will be invigoriously increased to reduce cell phone rates in half. Will it work? We'll see.

Remember in my last posting that what if Paul Gigliotti & Dave Thomson (of the now defunct band called "Wave") along with Lee Alsop and Ben Dunk (their friends) were to get the iPhone and wonder if they don't understand about Rogers (or Fido's) data plans were. Chances are they would end up like the guy who has a whopping $85,000CDN phone bill! As the old saying goes, things happen. The same thing will go for my friends Tarin, Laura, Jenny, Stacy P., Meghan and my trusted friend Bobby F. They will weigh in with the iPhone.
