Domani, sabato 2 agosto, il Premio si dedica ad una delle sue sezioni, la cultura, con la presentazione (ore 18,30 presso l’Aula consiliare) del libro “Discorso della miseria umana”, di Antonio Terminio, letterato contursano del XVI secolo. Un volume ristampato a cura del Centro di cultura popolare Unla e curato da Felice Pagnani.

Il programma di questa sera, venerdì 1 agosto, invece, in Piazza Garibaldi, prevede la prima delle tre serate del “Contursi festival”, concorso per voci nuovi, che vedrà la partecipazione di 36 ragazzi in gara. Domani seconda serata di selezione e quindi, domenica 3 agosto, finalissima presentata da Chantal, protagonista di “Uomini e donne”. Giuria prestigiosa, presieduta dal maestro Luca Pitteri, noto per essere uno degli insegnanti della scuola di “Amici”. La manifestazione è curata dalla Pro loco.

Le iniziative in programma

Il Premio Contursi Terme è anche proposta sui temi economici. Quest’anno il clou sono le infrastrutture, come il nuovo svincolo sulla Fondovalle Sele, che abbraccia il nuovo svincolo della Salerno-Reggio Calabria. Si realizzerà una grande rotatoria con ingresso nelle aree termali e quindi verso il centro urbano. Un’opera da 4 milioni finanziata con il Contratto d’area. Su questo si terrà un confronto lunedì pomeriggio, alle ore 18 (aula consiliare), con i rappresentanti istituzionali (Regione, Provincia, Comuni), il sindacato, l’Anas.

"Anche quest'anno abbiamo voluto finalizzare l'attenzione su temi che riteniamo fondamentali per lo sviluppo, come le infrastrutture -sottolinea il sindaco Giacomo Rosa-. Questo nuovo svincolo, insieme a due progetti che la Regione Campania ha finanziato, come il Pip commerciale con 9,6 milioni di euro, ed il Centro benessere presso il Parco delle Querce, con 4,5 milioni di euro. Tutte infrastrutture che, una volta completate, daranno nuovo slancio alla nostra area termale."

Our recent Name of the Day post on Etienne suggests that there's little hope of a revival for most French-flavored boys' names, at least in the first spot.  But how about the girls?

Read on for a discussion of past French names in favor in the US, and some très chic, très français ideas for a nom de fille today.

Vivienne is, of course, likely to re-enter the Top 1000 in the next year or two.  But parents have been borrowing inspiration from the ever so fashionable French for generations.  These Top 100 monikers al charted between 1880 and 1939:

• Blanche
• Elaine
• Genevieve
• Jacqueline
• Josephine
• Louise
• Lucille
• Marguerite
• Pauline

Most remained in use, and many climbed the charts during the Baby Boom.  They were joined by:

• Diane
• Joanne

Modern mamas might wear one of these names, but other French-inspired favorites from 1970 onwards include:

• Danielle
• Denise
• Nicole
• Stephanie

And current classrooms are filled with girls called:

• Madeline, and the even more deliciously French Madeleine

So what's next, besides Vivienne?  Here are a few to watch:

• Solange, a French shepherdess who became a saint back in the 9th century.  Currently unranked in the US.  The name derives from the Latin term for "religious," and some are tempted to break this down to sol - sun - and ange - angel - though that's etymologically incorrect.
• Chantal, a place name and saint's surname that gets some lift from her similarity to chant, the French word for song.  Plus, this choice is far more subtle than naming your daughter Chanel.  While Chantal did not rank in the US Top 1000 last year, Chanel came in at #879.  Don't go there!
• Severine, pronounced say vuh REEN, this name comes from an old Latin family name, Severinus.  While Severus might be a bit too Harry Potter for your son, this is an interesting feminization of a rarely heard name.  She's unranked in the US.
• Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris has seen her name rise in popularity in earlier generations.  Today she stands at a familiar, but not terribly common #344.
• Celeste, like Genevieve, she's quite familiar, but reasonably underused at #354.
• Oceane, yup, the French world is not immune to the lure of nature names.  We love the sound of this one - o say AHN - but fear she'd have to answer to plain old Ocean.  Neither is in the Top 1000 here, but Oceane is big on the other side of the sea, and in Quebec.
• Francoise, the French feminine form of Francis seems like a long shot at first, and indeed she's not in the US Top 1000.  But with the Italian Francesca at #477 and the throwback Frances at #825, it's an interesting option with the exotic pronunciation frahn SWAHZ.  Plus, it literally means "from France."
• Mireille, the heroine of Pierre Capretz' French in Action series, she's taught countless American students to parlez français.  While the spelling is tricky, the sound - mee RAY - is appealing and simple.  She was unranked as of 2007.
• Anais, a well known option thanks to writer Anais Nin, this variant of Anna is pronounced ah nah EES, thought we've met a modern bearer of the name who pared it down to ah NEES, which seems easier to wear.  She ranked #906 in 2007.
• Josephine, one of the earlier Gallic imports, she's back in a big way among the fashionable and today stands at #224.  It's impossible to say her name without thinking of Napoleon.
• Lilou, a white hot French moniker related to Lily and Liliane.  Pronounced LEE loo, she's unranked in the US.  We think she's a bit too flimsy to bestow independently, but could be a fabulous nickname alternative for Lillian.
• Maelys, another current favorite in the Francophone world.  It's a feminization of Mael, a 5th century Breton saint.  The sound - MAH eh liss - is tricky in English, and she's unranked in the US.  Maelle - MAH el - is also sometimes heard.
• Eulalie, the French version of Eulalia, yet another saint, has an engaging, spirited feel and offers the nickname Lally.  She's unranked in the US.
• Capucine, actually a botanical choice, referring to the nasturtium.  In the US, she'd inevitably be confused for a cup of strong coffee with frothy milk.  It's also doubtful that the sound - kah pu SEEN - would be easily embraced.  But it's an interesting floral-flair option, especially for the middle spot.  Capucine is unranked in the US.
• Elodie, one that works in English!  The mellifluous Elodie is - what else - a saint's name, more commonly written as Alodia.  She's unranked in the US, but thanks to the easy nickname option Ellie, wouldn't be too much for an American girl to wear.
• Sidonie, a name that would almost inevitably be confused with Sidney, is actually based on an old Latin name referring to the city of Sidon, in Phoenicia.  Despite her similarity to the two-syllable gender-spanning choice, we think Sidonie could work.  She's unranked in the US.
• Noemie, a French twist on Naomi, strikes us as one of the most appealing possibilities on our list.  We've also seen Noemi, but the "ie" ending makes this a smidge more distinct than her familiar cousin.  Technically, she's no ay MEE, but we'd favor a toned-down sound for the States - no eh MEE.  Noemie is unranked in the US, but Noemi charts at #636.
• Salome, a well-known Biblical bad girl, this moniker is redeemed by the presence of a second Salome in the New Testament.  (Salome #2 witnesses the crucifixion.)  Plus, her name derives from the Hebrew word shalom, or peace.  The sound - sah LO may - is distinctive, interesting, and yes, French.  Or at least popular in France.  Salome is unranked in the US.

Throughout our list, you'll note that we've declined to use diacritical marks, though we've preserved the pronunciations as intended in French, unless otherwise noted.  Why?  Any maman considering a French appellation for her darling daughter should know that the umlaut, cedilla and other accents are not acknowledged in American English.  They won't appear on her birth certificate or most other identifying documents.

Some names suffer without them - it's tough to tell if Oceane is French-fried or simply misspelled.  Others fare just fine.  It's one more thing to consider when considering these pretty, but perhaps tongue-challenging, appellations.

First up it's a perky little thing from the Free People Clothing Boutique. The inside detail is just as pretty as (if not prettier than) the simple outer pattern, and I love the whole site. People will tell you this is because I'm a massive hippy. You have a look and tell me that it's not all gorgeous.

And because that one's far too bright I've picked a stylish duotone brolly in contrast. This is from Chantal Thomass (who also does this fabulous slut-laden pin-up umbrella). I love the pinstripes and the buttons.

Estos recuerdos se han agolpado en mi memoria como consecuencia de la petición de eutanasia de Chantal Sebiré, la posición del gobierno francés y el casual sermón del arzobispo de Pamplona en Valladolid.

La solución aportada por el Estado francés –coma inducido hasta la muerte- es hipócrita, un paño caliente que no respondía ni solucionaba el deseo de Chantal. La muerte en ciertas circunstancias es una liberación, es lo que pensamos quienes somos partidarios de la eutanasia y así lo creía Chantal. No obstante, el Estado olvidándose de las libertades individuales, de los derechos más íntimos de la persona niega esta salida a un ciudadano condenado a morir por una enfermedad incurable. ¿Por qué? Nunca he comprendido del todo que se pueda mandar a la guerra, a la muerte, a jóvenes y no se permita morir a quien ya no tiene ningún futuro y además lo desea. Aplicamos la ‘inyección’ por piedad a nuestros animales y nos negamos a dar el descanso a quienes lo piden porque su vida ya no tiene sentido.

Yo respeto la opinión del Arzobispo aunque en absoluto la comparto; y él, por muy representante de Dios que se crea, debe respetar la mía. Decía este hombre de Fe que Cristo miró a la muerte cara a cara y yo le pregunto si acaso no la mira de frente y a los ojos  quien pide morir. No es cuestión de dignidad ni de cobardía, señor Arzobispo, dejémonos de sermones. La vida tiene un principio y un fin; sobre el principio poco podemos hacer pero sobre la salida de este valle de lágrimas, y a pesar de la religión, tenemos mucho que decir y legislar. Dejen hacer uso de la libertad a los hombres, acaben de una vez por todas con la continua injerencia de la religión en la vida de los seres humanos. Bastante dura es la vida por si sola como para que nos estén diciendo permanentemente lo que es bueno o malo, lo que debemos hacer o no. Y, sinceramente, si Dios existe a poco comprensivo que sea seguro que entenderá y perdonará nuestras dudas mejor que ustedes.

En cuanto a la afirmación de que Jesús no tuvo cuidados paliativos en la hora de su muerte finamente diré que es una metedura de pata, la negación del progreso. Con sentencias como esta aún estaríamos en las cuevas muriendo atrozmente por la infección de un uñero… si a usted le place esto aplíquelo a su existencia y deje en paz la del resto, incluido Dios

Should humans have the legal right to physician assisted euthanasia... suicide?

I know of no other creature not allowed this right, other than a human. Most of my pets, and I've had many, have passed this way. My dog was "put to sleep" at the age of 19; her liver and kidneys were failing, she had arthritis, she was in pain. She was a member of the family and nobody wanted to let her go, but we knew that she was miserable, and keeping her alive to delay our pain of her death we felt would be selfish. So we let her go peacefully with the help of her doctor, and she passed in my arms; hearing many "I love you's" as she drifted off for her final rest.

I can go on and on with examples just like this. They were all let go because they were suffering in some way; it was best for them, though it hurt like hell to let them go.

While it is legal in some countries, such as Albania, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland, The Netherlands, et al. for humans to seek doctor assisted euthanasia,  in most countries it is considered a crime. In the United States in the early 1990s Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a physician in Michigan, gained notoriety by assisting a number of people to commit suicide. Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who had been tried and acquitted repeatedly in the assisted deaths of seriously ill people, was eventually convicted of murder in Michigan in 1999 for an assisted suicide that was shown on national television.

The subject has come to the forefront again due to the story of Chantal Sebire, who died just recently, on March 19, 2008. Chantal Sebire had a rare, painful and disfiguring facial tumor that had burrowed through her sinuses and nasal cavities, causing her nose to swell to several times its original size, and pushing one of her eye sockets out of her head.

Two days before Chantal died she had lost her court battle to die with the assistance of a medical professional. She had wanted to die with dignity she said; she wanted a doctor to rid her of the severe pain she endured every day, caused by the disease she had endured for eight years called esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) , and continued to worsen as the cancer progressed. Chantal Sebire had become blind, lost her sense of taste and smell, and was living in severe pain on a regular basis.

Chantal was 52, a former school teacher, and a mother of three.

Chantal Sebire urged both French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the high court in Dijon, eastern France for their assistance. When they provided none, she stated she will not appeal the decision rendered and would find life-terminating drugs through other means.

"I now know how to get my hands on what I need and if I don't get it in France, I will get it elsewhere.''

"One would not allow an animal to go through what I have endured.''

There are many arguments both for and against physician assisted suicide. I for one hope that should I ever be faced with what Chantal Sebire went through, that I would not have to endure it until the cancer decided I could stop. I would want to stop it once I knew I just couldn't take it anymore. I'd like to take a legal path, so that behind me I don't leave a mess for my loved ones to clean up due simply to beurocratic decisions.

Everyone will have their own thoughts on this, and for different reasons. I'd like to hear input from others on this subject as well.

Am I really "out there" for feeling this way? That we should be able to have the legal right available to us to end our own suffering?

Chantal Sébire ha muerto en su casa. Ahora ya descansa en paz. La pena es que en casos tan dramáticos donde todo está tan claro, la justicia todavía no tenga mecanismos para aceptar la decisión individual, libre y consciente de morir dignamente. ¿Cuánto tardaremos en nuestro país en tener ese derecho?. Espero que sepamos llegar a ello, por todas esas personas que tienen que morir con grandes dolores en contra de su voluntad.

 En España hay una asociación “Derecho a morir dignamente” que defiende el derecho a la eutanasia.

Proprio ieri ho pubblicato un lungo articolo in cui mi schieravo a favore dell'eutanasia e oggi leggo su tgcom che Chantal Sebire, la donna di 52 anni malata di cancro si è suicidata!

Lo Stato Francese le aveva rifiutato, pochi giorni or sono,  la sua richiesta di eutanasia attiva e lei ha fatto tutto da sola.

Ecco fatto, questa è l'ennesima sconfitta della società civile ed evoluta. Lo Stato e la legislatura non sempre possono comprendere il fattore umano ed è per questo che ieri sottolineavo la necissità di leggi più sensibili alla sofferenza umana e commissioni di esperti che possano deliberare a favore o a sfavore dell'eutanasia valutando attentamente e rapidamente ogni singolo caso.

In questa triste e drammatica vicenda c'è solo un aspetto positivo: la povera Chantal Sebire ha smesso di soffrire e con lei le persone che l'amavano.

Ha scelto di andarsene in silenzio, prima dell'arrivo della primavera. Per questo motivo le dedico questi fiori di campo che non potrà più vedere.

Riposa in pace Sebire e speriamo che il tuo gesto serva a far ricredere coloro che condannano l'eutanasia a favore della sofferenza e della non-vita.

Ieri titolavo nel mio ultimo post che presagiva la sua tragica decisione: "Meglio l'eutanasia o l'atroce sofferenza?" La brava e intelligente Chantal mi ha dato la risposta: "Meglio il suicidio!"

Negli ultimi giorni la vicenda della donna aveva sollevato un nuovo dibattito sull'eutanasia in Francia, dove una legge del 2005 stabilisce il diritto di lasciarsi morire ma non quello all'eutanasia attiva. Il decesso di Chantal Sebire è stato annunciato dal sito internet di un quotidiano parigino e confermato da fonti del governo francese. Le cause della morte "sono ancora da determinare".

Una francesa llamada Chantal sufre una enfermedad muy extraña: un tumor le va deformando la cara. Esta enfermedad le está produciendo muchísimos dolores. Por eso, ella ha pedido la eutanasia pero el tribunal de Dijon acaba de rechazar hoy su petición. Chantal quiere ir a Suiza donde la eutanasia sí es legal.

En España todos recordamos la historia de Ramón Sampedro que durante años pidió la eutanasia. Su vida fue llevada al cine por Alejandro Amenábar en "Mar adentro". En España hay una asociación "Derecho a morir dignamente" que defiende el derecho a la eutanasia.

En los últimos meses se ha comentado, en ocasiones, que el próximo gobierno de Zapatero podría legalizar la eutanasia. Luego, otras fuentes lo han desmentido.

Das Wetter schmudelt hier in Hamburg immer noch vor sich hin, aber das soll mich nicht von den ersten Shootings abhalten. Den Anfang hat Denise Dietrichs mit dem neuen Kult Italiener Fiat 500 gemacht. Kurz darauf durfte Sie sich auch gleich in dem neuen Motor Teil der Piste verewigen.
