One of the most special moments of my recent trip to see churches in France, was contemplating the Virgin Mary in Chartres Cathedral. Two years ago, I wrote a book about Mary.

In STRANGE HEAVEN, I explored some of those archetypes that bubble beneath the surface in our lives, allowing us to almost subconsciously relate to certain things, as we encounter them. The motherhood of God is one of these archetypes, as is sainthood or some sort of special holiness. Well, both of these archetypes are central to understanding Mary and are central to how you "see" her in Chartres.

The "Blue Virgin" really stopped me in my tracks. I had heard and read about it, before going to see it, but it startled me. It became obvious why so many people (notably, Charles Peguy) over the centuries have strangely encountered Mary fresh in that image, and in others in the Chartres Cathedral, a place often called a "palace of the Virgin Mary."

For me, the image of Mary in that glass was that of a universal mother. She is the one who said yes, and she is the one who shows me, too, how to say yes. Without judgement. Simply. Like a mother.

Rowan Williams recently said that Mary "stands for the making strange of what is familiar and the homeliness of what is strange." Yes.

+++ ... This is one of those classic kinds of still, clear, frosty, ring-around-the-almost-perfectly-full-moon nights, such as keep a poor soul such as meself up to all hours. The view from the southwest-facing balcony of our home on the Rockland escarpment becomes fuzzy as one tries to gaze into the distance where the Olympic Mountains and the lights of Port Angeles should usually be...but are tonight completely obscured by a fine mist that seems to start just off the southern Marine Drive coastline... ...A moon-ring reminds me of another I saw recently in a new heavily textured painting by Virginia SmallFry of SmallFry Enterprises in an unusually large horizontal rectangle, showing Japanese plum blossom trees lit up at night with a moon-ring around the full moon in the upper right corner. The painting is so unusually large for Virginia, she had a bit of dilemma as to how to transport it up to a house at Shawnigan Lake... ...I've bought a number of paintings by Virginia over the years. I promise to get some pix of her work up here soon... ...Working late at night always makes me think of the great long ode to the night by the French Symbolist poet Charles Peguy...a master of trance-like repetition, spiritual mystery, and startling symbolic imagery, as in the Rosary, or Francesco's prayer to Sister Moon, or the mantras of the Beats and the Krishna people... +++

Parlatemi come mi avete sempre parlato.

Sorridete, pensate a me, pregate per me.
Io t’aspetto. Non sono lontano.
Esattamente all’altro lato della strada.
