Luis Santiago

Nacer para Morir…
¡Verdad eterna!
La Vida, latir
del alma
en el ara de la tierra.

¿El sendero?

La semilla del Amor,
el brote del capullo,
la espera de la Vida en flor,
el dulce amarre al seno maternal,
el concierto de arrullos amorosos,
el prodigioso manar del nubio seno
henchido de lácteos sonrojos.

¿La fuerza?

El recio tronco paternal,
fortaleza para el infante
en su primer asomo audaz
al incierto de su raza delirante.

¡Padre y Madre!
los dos velando
el fruto de su ardiente fuga--
Quizá de amor eterno,
quizá de lúdico ajetreo pasajero--
convertido en hijo
como de Dios los astros,
en lucero sembrado
en el paraje del hogar sagrado.

¡Y fue llamado Luis Santiago!--.
como la misma aurora
cuando descubre el día
tras de ahuyentar la noche—
sus grandes ojos bellos
suficientes para iluminar
el mundo entero
con el fulgor naciente
de su infantil destello.

¡Oh prodigio!
Hostia consagrada era
en el sagrario de la cuna;
dulce vino para añejar

por muchas lunas
en ánfora de nácar
guardada en las entrañas
de nobles cavas ancestrales

Su destino?

¡Crecer… Crecer!
llegar a Ser,
aprender decir:
¡Madre! ¡Padre!
Sentir su corazón latir…
sus manitas estirar
al azar de sus cariños,
refugio hallar
donde plasmar caminos
más allá del miedo
y sus designios.

¿Y después...?

¡Zarpar! ¡Zarpar!
hacia el inmenso azul de su confianza--
El Padre… Timonel de su barca de cristal…
La Madre, ¡Segadora fiel de sus borrascas!

¡Fugaz jornada marinera
Fue la suya!
La muerte encapuchada
Del seno maternal
lo arrebató
como arrebata el trueno
la majestad del cielo.

¡Horror!
el roble aquel
que lo engendrara,
convertido en monstruo
ordenaba borrarlo
del mapa de la historia.

Mudos testigos de su infamia,
transitando vamos
A Nosotros… !Las Furias
que habitan nuestras vidas
vacías de Amor y Caridad!

A friend of mine who is into these things spent some time researching the wealth of America’s

A friend of mine who is into these things spent some time researching the wealth of America's national politicians. The poorest was a multi-millionaire.

We all know that John McCain is so rich that he owns so many houses he actually didn't know how many he had when asked. And these aren't small houses either - after all he's reputed to be worth $100 million. But maybe my friend's findings might shock you.

Are they so rich they actually don't mind if there is no credit in the system? They clearly don't need to borrow any money. They may even have forgotten the kinds of things borrowed money can be used for. You know, buying a car when your old one finally breaks, tiding your small business through a bad patch or investing in better equipment for growth, allowing your kids to go to College, spreading out the ups and downs of uneven spending throughout the year, and so on.

I guess a Congressman pays cash for everything. Thing is, hardly anybody else in America or Britain does. America is so in love with debt that the whole country borrows more and more each year from predominantly Communist China and fundamentalist Saudi Arabia, home of all of the 911 bombers plus a few other places. The Republican Administration is just as bad, running a record budget deficit of mammoth proportions.

Why? Well, one suspects the NeoCon Bush government was more intent on looking after the financial interests of their millionaire friends than they were in keeping debt levels down. In fact, they welcomed rising consumer debt because this allowed consumers to continue living in a dreamworld where they were surrounded by goodies, gadgets and glitz at a time when their economy was in fact becoming weaker and weaker. This illusion of wealth is what is deflating right now. Assets we thought were worth a lot, are falling rapidly in value - because of the credit crunch, the inability to obtain credit to oil the wheels of the world economy.

Of course we want to punish these guys who earned millions as they enabled illusion to grow upon illusion. Of course it is wrong that people are paid $50 million a year for working no harder than a struggling single parent or large family breadwinner does.

But this rescue package is not designed to give those people more money, it's designed to allow us to not lose anymore.

Those congressmen and women who voted against the package should be kicked out of office right now, because they are clearly too rich to empathise or care for ordinary people. They seem too stupid to work out the problem, too selfish to think of others before themselves, too greedy to think of giving up politics, and too gutless to do what's right, rather than just what will get them elected.

Keep the ones that see sense, and throw out those who were against the bill. November's election isn't that far away...

THE ANCIENT CROP

http://eatchia.com/historystats.htm

At the time of the Spanish conquest, Mesoamerica had at least 29 domesticated botanical species, each having a different use. Of these, four stood out from a nutritional point of view, and these were the basis of the daily diet. The four crops were: amaranth, beans, chia, and maize or corn.

The importance of these four crops in Aztec diets is supported by Codices written about the same time as the conquest of America took place. Among these is the Florentine Codex which was written between 1548 and 1585 by Fray Bernardino de Sahagun, and is titled the General History of the Things of New Spain. The entire 12 volume work, written in Nahuatl (the native language) and Spanish, is in the Medicca Laurentziana library in Florence, Italy. Various aspects of Aztec chia production and use are described in this monumental work.

There is evidence that chia seeds were first used as a food as early as 3500 B.C., and served as a cash crop in central Mexico between 1500 and 900 B.C. Chia seeds were eaten as a grain alone or mixed with other seed crops, drank as a beverage when dissolved in water, ground into flour, included in medicines, and pressed for oil and used as a base for face and body paints. Aztec rulers received chia seeds as an annual tribute from conquered nations, and the seeds were offered to the gods during religious ceremonies.

The Aztecs made great advances in agriculture. As an example consider their unique system of growing crops. Using what they learned from their predecessors, the Toltecs, they were able to turn the marshy grounds that they lived on into firm soil. They wove bark from trees into large mats and anchored these to stakes in the lake. They covered the mats with soil and grew amaranth, beans, chia and maize on these man-made islands which were called chinampas or hanging gardens.

As was documented in the Codex Mendoza, written in 1541, the city of Tenochtitlan received annualy as tributes from conquered nations a minimum of 6,360 tons of maize, 4,410 tons of beans, 4,410 tons of chia, and 3,780 tons of amaranth. The city also harvested an average of 3,335 tons of maize, chia, beans, and amaranth from the 9,000 hectares of chinampas surrounding it.

It is interesting to note that the Aztec diets, when derived solely from these four grains, meet today's dietary requirements as set out by the Food and Agriculture Organization-World Health Organization (FAO-WHO).

Chia was one of the main dietary components of not only the Aztecs, but also of another great Pre-Columbian civilization that developed in Mesoamerica, the Mayans. The Mexican State of Chiapas, located within the limits of what was ancient Mayan territory, derives its name from the Nahuatl word Chiapan which means "river of chia". This indicates that existance of chia as a crop in this region also extends from very early times.

The conquest of America repressed the natives, suppressed their traditions, and destroyed much of the intensive agricultural production system that was in place. Many crops that had held a major role in Pre-Columbian American diets were banned by the Spanish because of their close association with religion, and were replaced by foreign species (wheat, barley, carrots, etc) which were in demand in Europe.

In recent years chia seeds were only consumed by small groups of people. Primarily they were mixed in water, along with lemon juice and sugar, and consumed as a refreshing beverage in Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua as well as the southern USA (California and Arizona).

It is interesting to note that 500 years later, modern science has concluded that Pre-Columbian diets were superior to present day diets. Formerly forced into obscurity, chia seeds are now emerging as a new food, and offer a great opportunity to improve human nutrition by providing a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and dietary fiber.

Although chia (Salvia hispanica L) was an important grain during pre-Columbian times, its cultivation decreased following the discovery of America. Until recently this species was cultivated only on a few hectares in its native location. Additionaly there were minimal possibilities of increasing the planted area in these regions. This is due to social and political factors which subdivided the land into small farms, and which brought about the corn culture and the use of the popular Mexican "tortillas".

The lack of a reliable source of chia led a group of growers and others to unite and work together as part of the Northwestern Argentina Regional Project, to initiate a chia research and development program. This effort included selection of new production areas and the development of practices aimed at bringing chia to the market as a new commercial product. Today chia is grown in different countries on a commercial basis. Producing the crop in different, distinct areas decreases climatic and political risks, and avoids concentrating the harvest season.

Modern science explains why ancient mesoamerican civilizations considered chia a basic component of their diet. Chia's composition and nutritional value gives it a very high potential for use in human and animal markets. Thus modern technological information has provided an excellent opportunity for creating an agricultural industry which can offer a "new, old crop" to the world.

Monica Madrigal gathering seeds of thistle chia on the Cahuilla Reservation. She is using a seedbeater made from Rhus trilobata and Juncus textilis. Thistle chia, also known as thistle sage, or Salvia carduacea, is relatively rare, but this year was prolific in some places. The other local and more common chia is Salvia columbariae. Its seeds are smaller, and to my taste, not quite as delicious and nutty as the larger thistle chia seeds. Both plants are annuals, love full sun and are drought tolerant. The chia you can buy in health food stores is Salvia hispanica. We're organizing our files for the ethnobotany project . . .

The Gathering Chia video documents Abe Sanchez (Purapeche); Marian Walkingstick (Acjachemen); Diania Caudell (Luiseño); Irving Morales (Luiseño); and Maureen Castillo (Cupeño) harvesting the tiny black seeds of the chia plant, a vitally important edible food for southwest native people. The group are basket weavers passionately interested in anything related to traditional native basketry. In southern California, chia seeds were harvested using a seed beater woven from willow and other local basketry plants. The seeds were collected in a a burden basket or basket tray, then winnowed to remove the chaff using a woven winnowing tray. Except for Abe, no one is using traditional tools in the video, but rather whatever is at hand. Irving is beating the seed heads with a fly swatter and using a plastic bucket to collect them. Although his pink plastic fly swatter works well enough as a seed beater, it doesn't have the beauty or resonance of a woven seedbeater. And the red bucket from Home Depot, although inexpensive and functional, lacks any connection to the gathering site, unlike the traditional collecting baskets woven with local juncus, deergrass, Rhus trilobata, and yucca.

This video is part of a larger project to document traditional gathering practices in southern California. Music is by composer William Bradbury.

_Nerve Cells of a healthy brain_U.S. News
I think everyone knows the necessity of Omega 3’s n

_Nerve Cells of a healthy brain_U.S. News

I think everyone knows the necessity of Omega 3's nowadays -- it's all over the "media." Unfortunately, the status quo is still "fish or fish oils." One can get DHA from plant foods which the body will convert to the needed EPA -- that's how the fish get it: they eat sea plants and their bodies convert it to EPA -- and, as Bogie might say, "why doesn't everyone just make their own?" ;) Who wants second-hand nutrients? Not I, said she. ~Shudder~ Walnuts; Hemp Seeds/Nuts; Flax (in moderation); and, of course that POWER-house seed that contains *the* highest of any food, the CHIA :D (aka "Salba") --All raw, contain lots of DHA, ready to be converted by your incredibly resilient host. Not to mention, all leafy greens; and, if you're getting your greens on (like you should, via Green Smoothies), you're SO golden...or Greenen ;^) -- Purslane, being the highest leafy green source of Omega 3's, with Mache in second place.

However, it has to be noted that oils are NOT good sources, nor are they healthful. Flax oil doesn't convert well, according to the Flax Council of Canada, for example; and I've read elsewhere is only converted anywhere from 2-15%! Dr. Fuhrman is also no fan of oils, especially, flax:

"...I do not recommend the use of flaxseed oil or flaxseed oil supplements. Flaxseed oil is pure fat and virtually devoid of all or most of the nutrients (except for vitamin E) found in ground flaxseed. Also, flaxseed oil is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and there is evidence that extracted PUFA oils may suppress the immune system, and possibly increase the growth rate of certain cancers and/or tumors. If you want the benefit of flaxseed, eat the ground seeds and avoid the oil." _ Disease Proof

And even flax SEEDS should be taken with caution:

"Flax seeds have beneficial health properties in moderate quantity. Excess omega-3 from flax is linked to increase risk of prostate cancer and flax seeds have a cyanogenic glucoside that blocks iodine uptake. So they could worsen and iodine deficiency if intake is borderline low."_Dr. Fuhrman quote from his Forum.

Can Flaxseed Oil Cause Prostate Cancer? Disease Proof

"Keep in mind that the scientifically documented benefits from flax seeds come from raw, ground flax seed, not flax seed oil." _ Exerption, Disease-Proof Your Child

Chugging oil (and flaxoil, Aye...) is not healthful. In fact, even flax SEEDS should be limited 1 Tablespoon per day is enough).

I have given up flax as a daily supplement (if something I make calls for it -- unlikely -- or something I eat has it, I won't protest) and choose Chia seeds, which are superior anyway. (Chias may be eaten as desired; no cautions with those gems!)

Whole food sources are always better, but, again, it's cautionary as to how one would do this. An excess of fat sources -- even good fats like avos, walnuts, etc. -- will become unhealthful amounts at some point. Now, many people have a medical need, or a physical/emotional need for more DHA; as well, a minority just don't convert the DHA well for some reason. Then a good-quality supplement is desirable -- AND, thankfully, veganically available! I'll start with DHA PURITY, which is one of the highest-quality I know (or trust):

"This veggie derived DHA, sourced from microalgae, provides the beneficial omega–3 fatty acid of fish oil without the fish. DHA Purity now comes in an all–new, purified liquid form of very highly concentrated DHA so that it can be digested easier and hidden easily in food..."

With DHA PURITY, you get 175 mg of DHA. This will cost you about $30 for a 60-day supply -- that's a good deal -- about $27 if you're a member.

*****

Next, the V-PURE from Water4Life is also excellent

This is a good product. UK sourced, it's now available in the United States (see links below). At first, I was not trusting, because when I contacted them via email, they could not or would not explain to me HOW it could contain EPA, when that is something that must be converted by a being, whether it's a fish or other animal. They were being curiously evasive in answering directly. What's the big secret? Am I going to run off and steal their "secret formulation"??! Gimme a break! That's the impression I got, though -- that it was some sort of secret . So I was skeptical...however, in my continuous thirst-search for knowledge (), I was reading all I could about Spirulina (which I consume, by the way) and something I was reading about the spirulina struck me and it made sense: [spirulina is a living "being" of sorts (kinda)] That IT actively consumes and converts DHA to EPA, therefore, containing EPA just like fish do. So, a much-less yucky *and clean* pre-converted form of EPA than a fish or other poor soul. So, this is most-likely the source of the Water4Life's EPA, or other algae like phytoplankton or somethin.' Or, perhaps, they've found a way to "feed" DHA to the spirulina so it makes the EPA, etc. Only my guess, of course; but, since they source it as coming from algae, and claim it's EPA, then what other conclusion is there? So I'm on their bandwagon: I've been using it -- and it's actually a higher dosage than I'm used to with DHA Purity -- and it's fabulous! I have gone through 2 bottles. I got it a long time ago because I'm one of those persons who "has to" try stuff! How else to know? ;) Anyway, like I mentioned previously, I don't like to order one thing from a site -- too expensive and a waste -- so I usually wait till I need a few things, then order. I was out of DHA Purity, but didn't want to just order it alone, so decided to finish off my V-Pure (still had plenty of time according to the expiry), which tasted fresh as when I first received it. Good to know that it's reliable and fresh when refrigerated. Now, one of the things that had me leaning toward this product from the git (even though I was dismayed at their lack of candidness) was the taste -- Never had fish oil, however, it IS notorious for tasty disgusting and that's why it's in capsules. Bad news, those capsules. It's easy to miss if it's stinky-rotten fishy which would mean it's RANCID and TOXIC! So, basically, you're doing yourself more harm than good! There are very few sources from which to get very clean fish oils, and even then, you are not getting the best. Back to the V-Pure -- I cracked open one of those babies, and, yep, drank its liquor -- Very good, actually. It had almost no flavor at all, which is great. I like the lemon-grass flavor of DHA Purity, but there are some sensitive people who find this mild flavor too off-putting, and some children don't like it; So, for them, I'd say go with the V-Pure. It's in a cap so you won't taste it anyway, but rest assured you won't be burping up fish flavors or any flavor, for that matter. And you can always crack open a cap and taste to test. V-Pure provides 89mg of EPA and 270mg of DHA -- that's pretty damn good! It's not inexpensive: For a 30-day supply (90 vegan-capsules) it runs about $30 at this site. (Also available here at the same price).

*****

Not sure about: NuTru's O-Mega-Zen3:

I can't really say it's NOT good -- didn't take it for any length of time to conclusion -- however, the taste was not "clean"; so, while not awful, it wasn't a pleasant or non-issue experience such as with the DHA PURITY and the V-Pure. So, if desperate, I'd take it! With O-Mega Zen3 -- available in liquid or vegan capsules -- you get 300 mg DHA for 1 serving (liquid); I'm not sure the dosage on the caps, but you get 40 capsules per container. Capsules will cost you about $19; the liquid, about $28. Available online as well as in some stores.

*****

DEVA also offers a vegan DHA; I've not tried it. It's available at various vegan store sites as well as in some markets. A 30-day supply at 1 vegan capsule per day will cost you a mere $14.95 for 200 mg DHA; a 90-day supply, $34.95

*****

Another new-comer -- Chia oil. Now, again, oils are seed extracts, stripped of the majority of their benefits. You also need more of it than algae oil; so you're basically getting a lot of fat, which may or may not be enough or even utilized. So, if I were on a desert island and a chia oil tree grew there, I'd take this over fish or any other source that might be around (while taking full advantage of the leaves, of course :P ). It's flavor is not bad, more neutral, if anything. But I'd not say completely flavorless. In larger doses, it gives off a definite flavor; however, in medicinal amounts, it's negligible. The link above takes you to a site where excellent chia seeds are offered; and they are now WIDELY available, even in stores. (Read more about chias here). But if for some reason you need chia oil, then it is available at Nature's Emporium or this site has it.

Bottom line --Go with the seeds over their oils; but adding a vegan DHA in addition to the consumption of healthful foods, containing DHA -- seeds, leafy greens, nuts -- for insurance/assurance.

*****

Personally, I'm all about quality over quantity, especially for my health! I don't compromise or shortcut when it comes to nutrition and health; so, I don't mind paying more for Dr. Fuhrman's DHA Purity, or for the Water4Life's, V-Pure --same for organic produce. AND, I faithfully get in LOADS of greens (which are FULL OF EFA's)-- whole leaves, blended AND greens, juiced -- via my Green Juicie, Green Smoothies! Plus good fats every day in the form in whole foods, preferably -- avocado, unsalted, raw, organic olives (FABUlous!!); various nuts and seeds ;) . So, methinks I'm doing a-okay on the Omega front :D. I also know that my mood; concentration; level of anxiety; deliberation; calmness; and contentment (bigtime) -- all improved with the addition of healthy fats, in general, and moreso, DHA, in particular. It is often DHA which is prescribed for depression, as well (usually as fish by unaware M.D.'s) so that makes sense, even if not depressed, as I wasn't! The purity, cleanliness, and lack of mercury, PCG's, dioxins, other toxins and rancidity -- all of which are readily in the majority of fish oils -- make an EPA-DHA plant-based supplement the optimal choice.

Whew! I'm thinking Green Juicie Green smoothies need their own page... Will get to it sometime!

To keep weight off I eat a Chia Acai Energy Bar. It has 290 calories and it is larger than your average energy bar and it fills me up. It has 41 grams of total carbohydrates and 6 grams of total fiber. I belong to a Diabetes program from my insurance. I checked and these are fine for a meal. The major ingredients are Chia, Acai, Sweet Cactus Farms Natural Agave, White Tea, Organic Cinanamon, and Virgin Unrefined Coconut oil.

The Coastline from Chia to Teulada: Travelling west from Chia along the coast road you will find stunning untouched scenery and - with the exception of July and August - deserted beaches. Further along the road is the small jetty and bay that make up Porto Teulada, an ideal location for mooring small craft and yachts in a sheltered position.Nestling in the mountains, one and a half hours' drive from Cagliari, is the village of Teulada. Famous for its original handicrafts, it is the place to buy embroidery, cork and terracotta. It is also the location of a world-famous sculpture exhibition which takes place every June.

One of the best of the area's beaches is Tueredda, where an expansive S-shaped stretch of sand, backed by tree-covered hills looks out to a small island. The waters here are crystal-clear and during august temperatures resemble bath water. In the busy months of July and August, the beach offers facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, a restaurant, toilets, showers and parking. On the other hand, if you visit anytime between September and May - when temperatures can still hit 27 degrees - you may well find yourself alone...

Beurk. Ooooh ouais...
