O autor agradece.

For those dealing with sound or video files, codecs are a way to compress the audio or video to save space. Codecs are needed for the various types of files, and Gizmo makes it all clear in Gizmo's Understanding Codecs.

get-you http://get-you.calyrium.org/

winff http://www.winff.org/

http://vixy.net/

http://www.bajaryoutube.com/

http://www.descargaryoutube.com/

$ ffmpeg -i input.flv -vcodec h263 -s tamaño -acodec libamr_nb -ab bitrate -ar freq -ac canales output.3gp

Instalando

We’ve got a few updates (in addition to a new Firefox) that are making Linux users pretty happ

We've got a few updates (in addition to a new Firefox) that are making Linux users pretty happy. First is an update to the GNOME free desktop software project.

Among the improvements in GNOME 2.24 that came out yesterday is the addition of the Empathy IM client (which I've tried and ended up not thrilled with, although some users love it) as well as the upgrade to Ekiga 3.0. They also have a time tracker, an improved Deskbar, new screen resolution controls (that look a lot more user friendly in the screenshot than what came with GNOME 2.22), new sound theme support (yea! we can set up multiple sound themes and change between them much more easily!), more attractive backgrounds, and what I consider the pièce de résistance, tabbed browsing in the file manager!

Of course there's more goodies in GNOME 2.24, which will be included in Ubuntu Intrepid unless I'm reading something wrong, so to see the entire list check out the release notes.

Buy non-free media codecs in Ubuntu

One of the biggest complaints about Ubuntu is that it doesn't come with media codecs so you can enjoy your MP3s and DVDs out of the box, but the codecs aren't free to distribute with the Ubuntu install disks. Windows, Macs and distros of Linux that come with a price tag have the codecs because you're paying for them. Scott Wegner reminded me of a link in this week's Ubuntu Weekly News that I had missed. Canonical, Ubuntu's parent company, has teamed up with Fluendo and Cyberlink to allow Ubuntu users to buy the codecs required to enjoy these types of media.

The codecs are currently available in the Medibuntu repository, and it looks like that option will continue, but the new agreement will allow users to purchase legal copies of the codecs, but I suspect that most users will prefer to use either the Medibuntu repo or the
ubuntu-restricted-extras package
than shell out $40 for most of the non-free codecs plus another $50 to be able to enjoy DVDs. What about you guys (and gals)? Will you buy the codecs from the Ubuntu Store or will you continue using the no cost method for getting the codecs?

Ubuntu Intrepid in beta freeze

Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" is one week away from entering the beta phase of testing and has entered the beta freeze. Basically this means that anything that needs to get added to the first beta of Ubuntu Intrepid has to get approved so they can get the disk images ready for distribution. They have an issue tracker set up so you can keep an eye on the bugs that the release team are watching. I burned a disk of Intrepid Alpha 6, and I'm looking forward to booting up with an image of the first Intrepid beta. I'm not sure when I'm going to start testing Intrepid, and I'm keeping an eye out for a way to test the Intrepid kernel while still using Hardy, just like we had for the Hardy and Gutsy kernels. André Gondim has a report on his testing of Intrepid Alpha 6 that is definitely worth the time to read if you have any thoughts of checking out Intrepid, even if it's not until after it comes out.

Mackenzie Morgan has a way for you to start checking out the new themes that have been created for Intrepid. It's super easy to get them, too. Simply add these two lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kwwii/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kwwii/ubuntu hardy main

Once that's done simply update your package list and install
community-themes
. You can do it at one time by running this in your Terminal

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install community-themes

Then simply open your Appearance window (System > Preferences > Appearance) and check them out. You can also grab updates for the
human-theme
,
ubuntu-artwork
and
ubuntu-sounds
to check out what they will look like in Ubuntu Intrepid. Just remember, if you decide to use the Hardy sounds you'll need to disable the new PPAs or you'll find them getting updated next time Update Manager is run. Personally I'm linking the NewHuman (from the updated
human-theme
) and NewWave (in the
community-themes
) themes, but I find I prefer the Hardy (or Mac4Lin) sounds, especially for logon and logoff, to the Intrepid sounds. The current sounds have a great African tribal feel to them, but the new ones just seem to remind me of the Windows (and yes, OSX) sounds. I'd prefer Ubuntu have sounds that set it apart. We can always add other sounds.

Par-tay!

Ubuntu sei reiner Kommerz, Canonical sowieso.

Many will know the turmoil: After installing a codec pack like say, K-Lite or Nimo’s Codec pac

Many will know the turmoil: After installing a codec pack like say, K-Lite or Nimo's Codec pack (for the oldschoolers), your player sometimes crashes when opening a movie file, your explorer dies off when you highlight a movie file, sometimes there's flickering when playing back a movie, an entirely green screen when playing back a movie, or annoyances of the such. All of those are clear cases of a fucked up codec system.

Video playback operates by using Codecs, those are used to render video data via Microsoft's DirectShow system. How these Codecs are loaded is referenced in the so-called "Merit System". When you install multiple codec packs, or even multiple codecs that can render the same kind of video data, it is no longer clear which codec is going to be used when you play back a video file. Additionally, many codecs that are installed by some of the many codec packs in existence are beta versions; highly unstable and hence often prone to lead to applicational failure.

This guide will tell you how clean your merit system to the point where it is as tidy as the one on a fresh windows install, and afterwards i'll point out how to set up a powerful and yet (in terms of software) minimalistic multimedia codec system.

The Cleanup

We'll need a piece of Software for this job: Zoom Player. It's a powerful player that has a shitload of features, but might bring too big a change in usability from your usual media player; hence you're free to delete it after the first few steps.

Get Zoom Player.

Start it, then hit Ctrl+O to open up the Options Dialog.

Switch to Advanced Mode using the button in the bottom left area of the Dialog.

Go to System -> Filter Management and hit the "Registered Filter Manager"-Button in the bottom right.

In the window that opens up, select all the entries and hit "Unregister Filter(s)". If Zoom Player fails to unregister one of the filters, it means that it's currently in use. If you have time, reboot your windows to safe mode and start over. If you don't, just try to delete around the used filters by selecting everything codecs from further down the list; if it fails to just unregister all of them, the topmost entry(/-ies) are the ones it could not remove.

If all of the filters are gone, hit Close, then OK, and then close down Zoom Player. At this point, you may uninstall the program if you no longer have a need for it.

Now that your merit system is empty, you'll have to restore windows' basic capabilities. You do that by executing this .bat file: download. It will re-register the original windows filters that are still inside windows' system32 folder.

The Setup

Now that your codec system is in a maiden state, let's go about installing codecs and filters. The idea behind a clean, yet powerful media system is to limit the amount of registered filters to a bare minimum. We'll do this by merely installing one filter for the parsing of container files (avi, mkv, mp4 and more), one filter for displaying subtitles and only one filter to handle all the codecs (xvid, divx, h264, mpeg2 and so on).

Get Haali Media Splitter. Install it.

Get VSFilter. Install it!

Get ffdshow-tryouts. Install it.

This is it. I have selected the urls of the most recent encodes of these programs. Except for Haali Media Splitter, they have predecessors that are no longer developed. With the setup you just configured, you should be set for all the media files you might encounter, with the exception of a few.

The Optionals

Videos that you of yet can't playback include, among mostly very rare, proprietary formats, Apple Quicktime formats. Especially .mov-files are still relevant in our modern internet times, they are for instance used on Apple's Movie Trailer page. To emphasize, this is stuff you CAN get, but don't have to. I'd recommend it anyways.

Quicktime Alternative. This contains the filters and codecs that let .mov-containers work with the ordinary DirectShow system. Not required, but good for watching those trailers. I can't really think of any other use, everything else is .avi or .mkv.

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. The player i like the very most. Windows Media Player has too low of a functionality and a crappy overview. Zoom Player i never got into, it looks quite complicated and like with VLC, the handling is not as good as MPC-HC. There are also beta builds, but they're not organized on any page.

AC3Filter. Gives you a tad more configuration options than ffdshow's audio functionality. It's not needed, but if you're an audiophile and feel that ac3filter improves your audio experience, shoot.

Well, i'd say that's about it. Maybe one small note to leave you with: If you like a player with low functionality and next to no focus to usability, a player that goes around the merit system and instead uses its integrated filters and codecs, just use Videolan Client.

This scripts installs tons of fonts, DVD and multimedia codecs to your system. I ran this on the T41 and it was fabulous.

Here's a quote from from the maker, Robbie Ferguson:

When Hardy was released, Automatix closed it's support for Ubuntu. This left a large gap in the "quick and easy" market for multimedia codec installation. perfecthardy is a Linux script built specifically for Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04, and it makes the installation of all your multimedia, DVD, fonts, etc. so very easy.

From the file:

# To install this file: download it by saving it to your desktop, or wherever.
# Then, right-click the file, click Properties, and choose the Permissions tab.
# Check off "Allow Executing File as Program".
# Now, just run the file in terminal.

File is located here. Thanks Robbie.

You may have heard of Prores but unless you're running Final Cut Studio 2 you haven't had the chance to work with the this codec. Well now, Apple has kindly made it available to everyone.

"Apple ProRes is a visually lossless format that provides uncompressed HD quality at SD data rates.

It is an excellent choice for mastering and can easily be transcoded to distribution formats like H.264. With new support for playback on both Mac and Windows computers, Apple ProRes can also be used for review and approval of Final Cut Studio sequences."
