I'm just about to get some sleep after a fun day of getting older! I couldn't go to bed without filling you all in on today's events! I starting the morning by getting to sleep in while my wonderful hubby got up with Jonas. He also made me eggs and toast...thanks sweetie. Then my good friend Katie took me to lunch for some yummy CR Chicks! (thanks friend) After lunch I actually got some studying in during Jonas' nap (I know I'm lame) but I have an exam on Tuesday! Tonight I went to dinner with the fam at Saito's Japanese Steakhouse. It was really good, I have always loved the restaurants were they cook in front of you and Jonas actually liked watching the guy cook. (for the most part) Finally we all came back to our house for dessert and gifts! It was a good day! Thank you to everyone that made it special :)

Tag, You're It! 'Needle & thread' is this week's theme. Add some stitching to your tag art. Not a problem, but I couldn't be bothered to get my machine out and I wanted to use some vibrantly painted corrugated cardboard for my tag, so it was all done by hand!

Had a busy day and a lovely afternoon/evening with friends but I had the urge to make a tag. I also made a fab background for my TGIF birthday card - can't show you though 'cos it's not dry enough to scan! I also finished my Spring and Winter ATCs for the 4 seasons swap, so they can be posted off to Trish on Monday or Tuesday next week.

This cardboard was painted with acrylics and gel medium which I had left on the palette after working on my canvas. I cannot abide waste, so I dug into the pizza box under the counter where I keep my cardboard packaging that's good enough quality to paint on, and hey presto... tag material! I like this colour combo very much and these lime green ceramic beads were an online bargain buy earlier this year. The dome sticker was bought at the same time. I have seasons and Art quotes.

I also got my numerals from Robin today - I only paid her at the weekend and I got my stamps this morning! *faints* How's that for speedy delivery?! From Colorado to Devon in 5 days!

I finally sat down and did the second illustration for my places book for wee-one. Place number two is high tea at the Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel here in New York City. The scan is okay - that blurring near the spine is inescapable. The scan also showed me that I need to clean up my purple marker around the orange text rectangles.

I have been busy, busy, busy (as Eloise would say) getting my act together on a number of fronts including creating a workspace in my bedroom on a budget. I have employed movers to shuffle all my heavy storage pieces between my home, a storage locker, and a thrift shop on Wednesday. All of this gets me a step closer to an actual studioish workspace for me to make messes.

Happy Friday!

I feel like I haven't posted in a long long time! The last few months I've been on "hiatus" while I concentrated on recovering from my relapse of Lyme disease.

I am happy to say, that while I am still symptomatic, I am at a point where I feel I can start to enter the world of the living again! This is huge, and I am so grateful as the "good days" are becoming more frequent and the bad days fewer.

So, I guess it's time to get back to work, although I am having trouble getting myself to sit down to create some artwork again. I actually signed up for a collage class that begin a few weeks so at that point, I will be forced to run out of excuses! I've also signed up fora poetry class so I am hoping to incorporate the two eventually.

I spent a week at the beach recently, thanks to my parents!

When I returned I had an email waiting from a fellow etsian - Adelle- who was planning to feature my etsy store on her blog! What a nice compliment! The piece she chose to feature was actually something I had created last April inspired by Spring.

This confused me, since where I live we are just coming upon Fall! Then I realized that this Etsian is from Australia, where Spring is just approaching.

I didn't remember that seasons differ in different parts of the world (I must have learned this at some point, I hope) and I find the idea quite intriguing

You can check out my featured blog entry here:

Hi everyone,

I have finally got round to sorting out my photos and I'm pleased to say that I can give you a little up date on how my bird embroidery is coming along.

Here it is along side it's sister piece which I'm doodling on from time to time. As you can see I decided to embroider on the bird pattern.

I am sewing it from the back and getting a lovely spidery sketchy type quality from the stitches which I love.

I have actually almost finished the stitching now, but as is always the case just as I am about to finish, I have run out of thread!

I am using a lovely cream Oliver twist thread, which I will get more of very soon so I can get finished.

I was sitting in my room staring at the wall today (taking after my dad in that respect, it seems

I was sitting in my room staring at the wall today (taking after my dad in that respect, it seems--although he doesn't stare at my wall, but other walls), mainly focusing on a crappy collage I made last summer. I thought it was cool at the time, 'cause I had found politically charged drawings/sayings from magazines--depictions of a robot in an American flag outfit with his head falling off, quotes like "awake is the new sleep" and "the dark side" / "playing with our heads" (conjoined to look like one line, despite their initial separation in two different magazines).

I began to wonder--what's the point of all, this alternative everything? So many of us feel the need to constantly glorify our apparent rebellion against whatever we may think is wrong with our little world, and we do this by going against the mainstream, and liking it.

Let's take ourselves seriously here. It's good to be different--but everyone who's different ends up being the same as all the other different people. I'm not condoning the idea that we should all stay within boundaries, follow the rules, all that, I'm saying that we should realize what we're really doing. Are we really breaking free by going off the beaten track, forgetting cliches (this sentence is now officially ironic), or are we only again doing what we feel we should be doing...we *should* follow the rules but at the same time we should break free of the pack.

My proposal is we stop declaring what we're doing and being loud about it, and we just go and do it. Maybe people will leave each other alone a little more. But wait--what am I arguing against? Against being different for the sake of being different? Perhaps--but I love those catchphrases, I love those actions that announce "I'm different and I like it--look at me. Pay attention to me." I wrote all this but I won't change.

We change and we progress and we become worse and we live and we just GO AND WE GO AND WE stop.

And we Are. And we will Forever Be.

Protest is dead.

I was at the Daily Kos laughing at what people type when I saw a link for all merchandises Democratic. Being a child of the 80s means that my blood type includes buttons.

Sadly, these days you don't see people's jean jackets covered with buttons and decals. I still have my jean jacket, which "they" will have to pry from my cold, dead fingers, and while the button idea is fancy and nice, it's far more fun to invent the kind that doesn't exist.

................

I'm not a Democrat, nor am I a Republican, but my way of thinking steers toward the liberal side more often than not, so I chose the above candidate. Otherwise the gag reflex while creating them would have been far too strong.

The one for little men would be difficult for them to wear, but maybe they can hang it outside their dollhouse, or lean it against its outside wall. It would be too large for them to roll it inside their minuscule homes.

Mine would be the last one, although so small it would be the size of a chocolate chip on my imaginary blouse, and that would only be on little-giantess days. The rest of the time I might accidentally inhale the little thing.

Time to go. Have a nice day!

30 August to 10 October 2008

Fans of Japanese cartoons and animations are in for a treat this September at Art Statements Gallery where legendary Japanese manga artist Yoshitaka Amano is presenting a solo exhibition of new works. No longer a subculture with a limited following, manga has grown into one of the most significant creative forces exported from Japan in recent history and its influence on mainstream popular culture in film, advertising, industrial design, fashion and graphic design is now regarded as nothing short of a phenomenon. Born in 1952 Amano shot to fame in the 1970s with his cartoon series 'Gatchaman' (G-Force) and since then has created many popular epics including the hugely successful video game series 'Final Fantasy'. Featuring several 2 metre long aluminium panels depicting fantastical creatures, warriors, heroines and superheroes, this is a must-see show for manga buffs and manga neophytes alike.

Showcase 82 Republic!

Mixed media group show: Chan Yu, Liu Ja, Guo Hongwei, Wan Yang, Zhou Siwei
Connoisseur Gallery
1 September to 30 September 2008

September is going to be an exciting month for Connoisseur's stable of young artists who will be exhibited in four locations across Asia. Known as the 82 Republic artists, this generation Y group of four painters and one sculptor was born in the eighties and incubated in their own dedicated gallery of the same name. Now ready for the world, their work will be shown in two of Connoisseur's gallery spaces in Hong Kong - Connoisseur Art Gallery and Connoisseur Contemporary - as well as at the international art fairs at ShContemporary in Shanghai and KIAF in Seoul, Korea and in Connoisseur's Singapore gallery as a parallel event of the Singapore Biennale 2008. Zhou Siwei's cartoon-like character in 'Infection - Astroboy no 7' and the flat translucent shapes of Chan Yu's 'Where is My Childhood? No 9' exemplify the new 'spirit' of this era which has been powerfully influenced by animation, toys and digital culture.

Xue Song: A Tale of Our Modern Time
Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery
4 September to 27 September

An alarming accident was responsible for a crucial turning point in Xue Song's art practice: "In 1990, a big fire broke out in my dormitory". His books, magazines, newspapers, pictures and prints, damaged and burnt, were "released from their frames" leaving Xue Song with a new deeper understanding of the fragmentary, mutable nature of life. From these ashes emerged the embryo of his own significant unique visual language quite distinct from his contemporaries: a language of burning, restructuring, collage and drawing. The retrospective show exhibits Xue Song's range of interests since the fire from his pop art-coloured Mao series made in the 1990s inspired by leader portraits, model operas, big-character posters (Dazibao) and Red Guards to his more recent preoccupation with modern Shanghai and the intriguing relationship between people and cities.

New Ink Art: Innovation and Beyond
Group exhibition
Hong Kong Museum of Art
22 August to 26 October 2008

"Ink has been part of our history for over 3,000 years," says guest curator Alice King. "I want to show people how Chinese ink painting has evolved through the ages. It is no longer painted the way it was even twenty years ago". Comprising 64 works by nearly 30 artists from Hong Kong and the mainland, this thorough survey places the increasingly popular Chinese contemporary ink genre in its historical context with a particular emphasis on the part played by Hong Kong master Lui Shou-kwan who, with his New Ink Movement, has inspired ink artists since the 1960s, amongst them Wucius Wong, Leung Kui-ting, Irene Chou and Kan Tai-keung. The exhibition looks to the future too with some controversial exhibits in the boundary-pushing section called "Is it Ink Art?" Some would say that works such as Cai Guoqiang's gunpowder images, organic installations and digital works are not ink art at all. This show asks us to question our view of ink as a medium and to appreciate it as an essence, an aesthetic which can find expression in a variety of forms.
