<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Why do we say “to do your homework” and not “to make your homework”? And why do we go somewhere “by car” or “by train” but “on foot” ? The reason is “collocation”.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Words that occur with or in the vicinity of a target word (that is, with greater probability than random chance) are called “collocation”. (Schmitt 2002)</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Collocation means the way that words form predictable relationships with other words.<span>    </span>Collocation is "the readily observable phenomenon whereby certain words co-occur in natural text with greater than random frequency" (Lewis, 1997) </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>The tendency for lexical words to occur together is called collocation, e.g. a vivid imagination, perform an analysis, deliver a speech, a problem child. But not all co-occurring items can be counted as collocations.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Firth (1957) holds that collocations of a given word are statements of the habitual or customary places of that word. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">A Collocation is an expression consisting of two or more words that correspond to some conventional way of saying things. The words together can mean more than their sum of parts (The Times of India, disk drive). Words like this are called collocates, and the expressions in which they occur are collocations. Collocations include noun phrases like strong tea and weapons of mass destruction, phrasal verbs like to make up, and other stock phrases like the rich and powerful. </span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">It was only in the 1960s that the paradigm of lexical studies began to shift and more and more energy began to be devoted to collocational meaning in vocabulary, especially among the Neo-Firthians—stressing meaning in context and its combinational texture (e.g. Halliday, 1960 and Sinclair, 1960), and the study of how words combine (often quite arbitrarily) began to be seen as significant as the study of what they meant in denotational and connotational terms. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Wong &#38; Fillmore<strong> </strong>(1976) argues that<strong> </strong>memorization of formulaic utterances is indispensable in SLA.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Nattinger<strong> </strong>(1980) states that it is necessary to think of lexicon in much broader terms and must pay more attention to the importance of prefabricated speech routines in language behavior. He believes that language production is the piecing together of ready-made units appropriate for a specific situations. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Widdowson (1990) deems it reasonable that lexis is the starting point and that syntax needs to be put to the service of words. It is the lexis that acts upon the grammar. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Willis<strong> </strong>(1990) considers word as the basic unit of syllabus design and argues that it is word meaning that determines which structures are grammatical and which are not. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Khellmer (1991) has argued that our mental lexicon is made up not only of single words, but also of larger phraseological units, both fixed and variable. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Collin Martindale<strong> </strong>(1991): Knowledge is in the connections rather than in the units. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Rod Ellis<strong> </strong>(1994) argues that native speakers tend to judge lexical errors as more serious than grammatical errors.<span>  </span><strong><span> </span></strong></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Michael Lewis (1997) through his “Lexical Approach” points out that many common words (e.g. mind, way, think, point, and have) "carry little meaning in themselves". "Such words hardly have an existence independent of the multi-word phrases and expressions in which they occur.” </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Collocations are both indispensable and problematic so they should not be neglected especially at advanced levels. It is an important part of native speaker competence.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Lewis (1997) maintains, "instead of words, we consciously try to think of collocations, and to present these in expressions. Rather than trying to break things into ever smaller pieces, there is a conscious effort to see things in larger, more holistic, ways".</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Laufer<strong> </strong>(1998) stresses the importance of vocabulary, which unlike grammar, is an unending task partly because lexical errors usually cause more disruption for comprehension and communication than grammatical ones. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Collocations not only enhance accuracy but also fluency. (Wray, 2002) </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Fassold (2006): Collocation as an adjacency pair<em> </em>is a pair of utterances in which the first part sets up so strong an expectation for the next part that something is missing if the next part does not occur. </span></span></p>

When learners use collocations, they will be better understood. Native speakers unconsciously predict what is be going to be said based on the use of phrases. If a non-native speaker uses frequently-used patterns (collocations), it will be easier for native speakers to guess what the non-native speaker is saying and may help compensate for other language issues, such as pronunciation. When learners write and speak, if they use collocation central to their topic, their readers are more likely to understand their message.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>The importance of vocabulary acquisition has always been recognized, although, at times, vocabulary was treated as separate from grammar and skills. However, the communicative and natural approach emphasized the importance of vocabulary development, which resulted in more interest in vocabulary teaching.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>It is accepted that choosing our words carefully in certain situations is more important than choosing grammatical structures (Harmer 1991). We cannot use structures correctly if we do not have enough vocabulary knowledge. Although many techniques and approaches, such as word families and key words, have been employed in teaching vocabulary, I suspect that none of them has interested language teachers more than Michael Lewis’s Lexical <span>          </span>Approach, which argues that language consists of chunks that produce coherent texts when they are combined(Lewis 1998).</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Collocation runs through the entire English language. No segment of natural English is devoid of collocation. If you say <span> </span>“strong rain” you may make yourself understood, but it possibly provokes a tender smile and a gentle correction, which may or may not matter. But you will for certain be marked down for it in an exam. Language that is collocationally powerful is more readily understandable and appreciated for its theme and details by the audience Besides, collocation is where grammar and vocabulary meet in one lump.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Our brain tends to store language in chunks, rather than individual words. Thus, when we speak or write, it is more efficient for us to remember and use phrases as chunks rather than constructing them one word at a time. This increased efficiency promotes fluency. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Native English speakers will unconsciously predict what is going to be said based on their own use of these phrases. This increases the efficiency with which they are able to listen or read. Thus, if a speaker or writer uses uncommon phrasing patterns, a native English speaker may find him or her harder to understand. Conversely, if a non-native speaker of English uses frequently used phrasing patterns, this may make it easier for native speakers to guess what non-native speaker is saying and may compensate for other language issues such as pronunciation. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>    </span>Familiarity with collocations and the resulting ability to make guesses about a speaker/writer’s speech should increase a non-native speaker’s efficiency as a listener or reader.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Collocational activities can be used to help advanced language learners refine the context of use and move toward native-like use.</span></span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;">Après 1 semaine de recherches intensives, nous avons enfin trouvé notre appart à Dublin ! La porte d'entrée est rouge, on la repeindrait bien en rose pink mais je ne crois pas que le proprio sera d'accord. C'est un grand appart au nord de Dublin, avec un grand salon-cuisine, une immense chambre de princesse, et un bain/douche. Photos à venir dès qu'on sera installées.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Si toi aussi tu cherches un appart à Dublin, voici quelques conseils qui peuvent t'aider.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Tout d'abord, procure-toi une carte sim irlandaise comme ça tu auras un numéro irlandais. Chez Vodafone, c'est 10 euros la carte sim, c'est la que nous avons fait la notre.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sur internet, le meilleur site en matière d'appartement c'est <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">www.daft.ie</span></strong>. Ce sont la plupart du temps des agences mais aussi des particuliers qui louent leurs apparts. 2 possibilités : soit tu cherches un appart où tu seras seul maître de maison, alors c'est dans la section <strong>Lettings</strong> qu'il te faut chercher. Si tu veux vivre en colloc, alors c'est dans la partie <strong>Sharing</strong> que tu iras fouiner.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Les baux sont souvent conclus pour 1 an, mais tu peux parfois t'arranger avec le <em>Landlord </em>(propriétaire) pour le racourcir à 6 mois (c'est notre cas par ex.).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Alors ça se passe plus ou moins comme ça: tu vois une annonce sur daft, tu appelles pour arranger un rendez-vous <em>(viewing</em>) pour visiter, tu pars 2 heures avant pour être sûr d'arriver à temps (au pire, tu fais comme nous, après 30 min à attendre le bus qui vient pas, tu prend le taxi...), tu visites l'endroit avec le locataire actuel ou le <em>Landlord. </em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Il y a aussi des <em>opening views</em> (visites organisées) où les propriétaires vont visiter plusieurs personnes en même temps à une date et heure fixes.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Après la visite, si tu sais que c'est l'appart de tes rêves, tu te dépêches de donner l'argent cash au <em>Landlord</em> pour être sûr que l'appart ne te passe sous le nez (en principe, tu donnes un <em>deposit</em> d'un mois qui te sera rendu à la fin de ton bail si tu as su garder ton appart en bon état). Ensuite, tu signes des documents (n'hésite pas à poser tout pleins de questions!) et voilà tu as les clés de ton chez-toi !</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Si tu choisis la colloc, alors là ce sera comme un casting, tes futurs colloc vont choisir avec qui ils vont habiter, alors fais bonne impression.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Si tu n'es pas difficile ou très chanceux, tu peux également regarder les annonces dans le journal <strong>Evening Herald</strong> (il y a plus d'annonces le jeudi).<strong> </strong>Pour éviter de perdre ton énergie, pose les bonnes questions avant de partir visiter les apparts (par ex., demande si c'est meublé ou non... etc). Personnellement, les 5 apparts que nous avons visités grâce à ce journal, n'étaient pas fameux, souvent sales et en mauvais état. D'après notre proprio, cela arrive souvent avec les annonces du Evening Herald. Mais il se peut que tu tombes bien aussi, il y a certainement des exceptions. Bon faut quand même dire qu'un des apparts était décrit comme tel "luxurious one bedroom appartement... etc" et je peux te dire que notre définition du luxe, n'avait absolument rien à voir avec ce qu'on vu (un appart de grand-mère qui sentait la naftaline, le pourri et l'humidité à en faire tourner la tête...) .</p>
<p>A oui, et les quartiers. Alors d'après ce qu'on a vu / entendu / lu :</p>
<p>Le nord (chiffre impairs: Dublin 1, 3, 5...) est réputé plus pauvre et le sud plus aisé. D4 est par exemple un adjectif à lui tout seul pour désigner quelqu'un d'aisé.</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 1 </strong>: bof, moyen. Près de Mountjoy Square ça va, après un peu moins. En plus, y'a une prison pas loin...</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 2</strong> : bien, c'est là qu'on est restées 2 semaines. Proche du centre, beaucoup de cafés, restos et petits magasins  (tesco, spar..)</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 3 </strong>: c'est là qu'on va habiter, apparemment y'a un parc le Fairview park qui est sympa. Il y a un centre sportif avec piscine pas loin. C'est à 5 min en bus du centre.</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 4</strong> : excellent, quartier aisé, mais cher.</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 6 </strong>: joli quartier pittoresque, très tranquille (autour de Grosvenor Square) et safe.</p>
<p><strong>Dublin 7</strong> : quartier de smithfield en construction sera sympa à terme, sinon rien de spécial</p>
<p>Dublin Co. est hors du centre. Les loyers sont moins chers mais tu devras dépenser plus de temps et d'argent si tu te rends fréquemment en ville.</p>

<p>Quelques astuces et règles qui vous sauveront la vie (croyez-moi, la colocation réserve parfois des surprises trés inattendues...).</p>
<p>La première chose à faire, c'est de bien définir le cadre et les régles de base. Que tout le monde soit bien d'accord sur le fonctionnement de la vie à plusieurs, dès le départ. De répartir équitablement les tâches de ménages, les divers frais (internet, assurances, charges,...), les horaires (s.-d.-bain, bruit, fêtes, invités, ...). Cela vous évitera bien des surprises par la suite.</p>
<p>N'oubliez pas d'inclure min. une soirée spéciale par mois entre colocataires, un moment de fête et de plaisir, car la colocation c'est avant tout l'échange, l'ouverture, et la fête ;o)</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">What a difference a few years makes.<span>  </span>Today, it’s a Seller’s market when it comes to raised floor space.<span>  </span>The market is especially tight if you’re looking for larger amounts of contiguous space.<span>  </span>If you’re looking to plant, say 10,000 or 20,000 square feet of racks at a collocation provider today,…. Fa-get-a-bah-dit (well, almost).</span></p>

Il vous faudra:</p>
<p><strong>400g de chocolat de ménage<br />
1 boîte de lait condensé</strong><!--more--><br />
<strong> 1 pincée de sel<br />
100g de noix concassées<br />
</strong></p>
<p>1. Laissez fondre au bain-marie, tout en remuant, le chocolat additionné de lait condensé.</p>
<p>2. Retirez la casserole du feu, éteignez la plaque; ajoutez le sel et les noix, melangez bien et laissez refroidir.</p>
<p>3. Prenez un plat creux ( idéalement: 30x18x5 cm) au fond duquel vous étendez un film plastique servant à emballer les aliments.</p>
<p>4. Versez-y la pâte tiède, puis égalisez la surface à l'aide d'une spatule.</p>
<p>5. Laissez refroidir au réfrigérateur 3h au min. Puis renversez la préparation sur un autre film plastique, retirez le plat et le premier film avant de découper les succulents pavés.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">(on peut insérer par-ci par-là une heure ou deux avec des amis)Sincèrement, ça <strong>ressemble aux recherches de stages</strong> : on cherche à <strong>convaincre</strong>, on est en <strong>concurrence</strong> avec d'autres donc on envoit un sms lorsque l'on a vraiment aimé, on attend la réponse, on y <strong>pense</strong> tout le temps. Cela demande plus d'énergie que je n'aurais pensé.<br />
Oui mais voilà : <strong>J'AI TROUVE UNE COLLOCATION !</strong> Ha ha. Je ne vous cache pas mon bonheur.<br />
Me voilà donc à <strong>Tiergarten</strong> (littéralement "le jardin des animaux"), à mi-chemin entre mon école à l'ouest et le centre (<a href="http://maps.google.fr/maps?f=q&#38;hl=fr&#38;geocode=&#38;q=Alt-Moabit+87,+D-10559+Tiergarten,+Berlin&#38;sll=52.55642,13.361092&#38;sspn=0.070761,0.180244&#38;ie=UTF8&#38;z=16&#38;om=1">Carte ici</a>).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Je loge dans un <strong>immense appartement de 160m²</strong> abritant 4 personnes. Pour la comparaison, ma chambre fait la même taille que mon appartement parisien <strong>pour un loyer divisé par deux.</strong> La chambre est meublée, guitare comprise!Mes collocataires sont <strong>allemands et très sympas</strong>. Ca tombe bien, c'est exactement ce que je cherchais! Me voilà donc installé, j'ai une semaine de vacances (à l'exception de quelques détails administratifs) avant le début des cours. Il m'aura donc <strong>fallu 5 jours, 4 Mc Do, 2 kebabs, et 2 pizzas pour trouver</strong> (sic). Il était temps que ça finisse.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Une demie-journée après mon emménagement, je me sens à l'aise avec mes collocataires (dîner sympathique), mais moins avec mon allemand (<a href="http://openspace.over-blog.com/article-12239734.html"><span style="font-size:x-small;">ich versuche...</span></a>) même si je sens que cette exposition directe avec la langue de Steffi Graf Goethe va me faire progresser à la vitesse grand V.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Berlin 1ère étape : une collocation]]></title>

Me voilà à Berlin depuis mardi dernier. Première étape, la recherche de collocations.

<p style="text-align:justify;">Me voilà à Berlin depuis mardi dernier. <strong>Première étape, la recherche de collocations</strong>.<br />
<strong>Les points qui m’ont marqué</strong> :<br />
- <strong>le prix</strong> : pour 2,5 fois moins que ce que je payais à Paris, je peux avoir une chambre plus grande (30m²) qui ne représente qu’un quart de l’appartement total… Du coup je suis tenté de garder mon budget parisien pour me louer une rue :-)<br />
- <strong>la numérotation des rues</strong> : c’est bête peut-être, mais ils ne font pas comme nous. La numérotation part d’une extrémité et d’un coté de la rue, puis va à l’autre bout de la rue, pour changer de côté puis revenir. Donc <strong>quand vous avancez dans la rue, d’un côté les nombres augmentent et de l’autre il diminue</strong>. Pire, avez 24 d’un coté et 231 de l’autre.<br />
<strong>- l’organisation de la ville:</strong> je me suis déjà pas mal déplacé et je trouve – à confirmer – que <strong>les quartiers sont hétérogènes</strong>. En témoigne cet appartement que je suis allé visité : au 31 de la rue, se trouvait un immeuble magnifique et tout refait. Au 31A, se trouvait un appartement miteux dans un immeuble miteux avec des tags miteux. Déception...<br />
<strong>- le niveau de langue :</strong> <strong>l’allemand parle anglais</strong>, c’est un fait. Donc pas de problème en cas de niveau d’allemand défaillant. J’ai déjà fait deux visites dans la langue de Beckham, euh, Shakespeare je voulais dire<br />
<strong>- références :</strong> personne ne m’a parlé du loyer. On ne m’a demandé <strong>aucune référence ou garantie pour la caution.</strong> Et je sens que l’on ne va pas davantage m’embêter par la suite.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Enfin, voici <strong>quelques conseils</strong> destinés à ceux qui essayeront un jour de trouver un appartement à Berlin. Ces conseils me mènent au <strong>mot du jour : Blitzkrieg</strong>. Cela signifie « <strong>guerre éclair</strong> » et c’est un certain Adolf qui l’a inventé en lançant contre ses ennemis des <strong>attaques rapides où ses troupes étaient constamment en mouvement</strong> (au lieu de rester dans des tranchées). J’utilise cette référence historique (un peu poussée) pour exprimer la <strong>réactivité dont il faut faire preuve pour pouvoir visiter un appartement</strong>. Il s’avère que je ne sois pas le seul à chercher une collocation. Chaque annonce fait donc l’objet de dizaines de réponses. Ainsi, ce sont les <strong>premiers qui sont servis</strong>. Il s’agit donc de guetter l’annonce et d’appeler le plus vite possible.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Les autres points sont classiques :<br />
- Consulter <a href="http://www.wg-gesucht.de">www.wg-gesucht.de</a> et <a href="http://www.studenten-wg.de">www.studenten-wg.de</a>, les références en termes de collocations<br />
- Aller à l’Est pour avoir des appartements moins chers<br />
- Eviter les appartements chauffés au charbon…<br />
- Eviter l'annonce qu'un gars republie régulièrement, et qui donne l'impression d'avoir plus sa place sur Meetic</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Je vous laisse avec une photo prise entre deux visites sur laquelle le soleil fait ce que je vais faire : il se couche !<br />
Le jeu du jour : trouver le détail qui tue (hors texte) et qui assure que cette photo a été prise en Allemagne.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Un <strong>aspect intéressant du web</strong> m’est venu à l’esprit lors de ma <strong>recherche d’appartements</strong>. </p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Voyons la situation : mon ordinateur m’est très précieux étant donné que les annonces sont en ligne. Il me faut faire face à des dizaines d’annonces sortant quotidiennement. <strong>Il s’agit donc de s’organiser</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">En bon semi-geek que je suis, j’ai mis à profit le web. J’utilise Google (<a href="http://openspace.over-blog.com/article-11912195.html">encore</a> !) pour organiser toute l’information. <strong>J’ai tout mis sur une Google map</strong>. Le web, c’est aussi la possibilité de faire plein de trucs peu intéressants (qui a dit "dont ce blog" ?!?). Ainsi vous pouvez <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&#38;hl=fr&#38;msa=0&#38;msid=107033482030416130779.0004392f01c9f67dca4f9&#38;ll=52.530634,13.364525&#38;spn=0.070802,0.180244&#38;z=13&#38;om=1">suivre en temps réel ma recherche de collocation ici</a>. Plus sérieusement, cette <strong>carte me permet d’y voir plus clair et de m’organiser</strong> (avec pour chaque repère, des infos ajoutées par ma personne et qui apparaissent lorsque l’on clique dessus).<br />
Finalement le <strong>choix est double</strong> : soit on enregistre tout sur son ordinateur, et on prend des notes. Cela <strong>permet d’accéder à toute donnée à tout moment et ce, à partir de son ordinateur.</strong> J’ai envie de parler de « présent ». </p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Soit on met tout en ligne</strong>, en utilisant des outils permettant de s’organiser. Cela offre une <strong>meilleure gestion de sa recherche (tout peut-être ajusté en temps réel</strong>), mais il faut pouvoir être connecté (j’ai eu l’air bête allumant dans la rue mon ordinateur, et en cherchant un réseau wi-fi à bout de bras, ayant perdu mon papier…). Sur le long terme (le « <strong>futur »</strong>)<strong>, cette méthode est très pratique</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Si on pousse un peu le raisonnement, on a le <strong>choix entre le "présent" et le "futur".</strong> D’ici peu, c’est la <strong>technologie qui va tout régler</strong>, en permettant d'être connecté partout à Internet (cf. le iPhone qui, dans mon cas, m’aurait permis dans la rue d’accéder facilement à ma carte). En attendant, je n’ai toujours pas de collocation…</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Hier j’ai eu un réveil des plus agréables. J’entendais des drôles de bruits venant de ma fenêtre, comme un bout de bois qu’on grignote. Et en fait il y avait un petit écureuil, posé sur la palissade, et il grignotait une noisette, il était trop mimi. Moi j’essayais de ne pas bouger pour ne pas l’effrayer, mais quand il a fini de manger je crois qu’il m’a vu et là il a eu peur. J’étais tapie dans l’ombre, sans bouger, il a du croire que j’étais un chat. Du coup il a essayé de me faire peur : d’abord il a fait un drôle de bruit, ça ressemblait un peu au ronronnement d’un chat, tout en agitant sa queue, et comme je ne réagissais pas il a commencé à pousser des petits cris. Bon ça ne m’a pas trop impressionné donc il a fini par s’enfuir.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Et ce matin deux écureuils sont en train de manger sur la palissade. On commence à être envahis. Bah je pense que les chats de ma colloc font s’occuper de ça. La dernière fois je les ai surpris en train de jouer à chat avec l’un d’entre eux. Pauv’e bête.</span></p>

<p>Vendredi, pique-nique Ariba: concours de gâteaux, jeux d'équipe, chapeaux de pailles et super soleil.</p>
<p>Vendredi soir, resto avec la mafia française (c'est comme ça qu'on nous appelle au boulot).</p>
<p>Samedi, journée à Great America : manèges à grandes sensations. C'était vraiment terrible: le principe de la plupart c'est de nous mettre en hauteur face orientée vers le sol et de nous propulser vers le sol à très grande vitesse. Pour une des attractions on était face à face avec ma colloc Sheila, du coup je voulais sourire et pas faire une tête horrible mais c'était vraiment pas possible: je suis contente de ne pas avoir ma photo.</p>
<p>Samedi soir: resto français, entre français à SF, ben oui c'était le 14 juillet. Puis soirée house. On a bien profité de la fête nationale même si y'avait pas de feu d'artifice.</p>
<p>Et dimanche, ben tout d'abord j'ai dormi et maintenant je vais aller au festival Art and Wine de Los Altos.</p>
<p>Voilà pour ce Week-end ça sera tout.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A Sunnyvale, y’a pas grand chose à faire. C’est ce que tout le monde dit car on a une minuscule rue marchande (2, 3 boutiques et des bars et restos). Mais voilà l’été a commencé, et avec ça les mercredis de Sunnyvale. De 6h à 8h30 PM, il y a un groupe qui joue de la musique dans la rue, tout le monde danse, on mange et c’est l’occasion pour moi de rencontrer nos voisins que Sheila me présente.</p>
<p>Mercredi dernier c’était vraiment super, et comme ça finit tôt pas de problème pour aller bosser le lendemain. Donc je prévois de le faire tous les mercredis.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal">Ce matin je vais faire mon lit, et je vois que la couverture est dérangée au niveau des pieds. Je m'avance donc pour la remettre en place, mais je vois une grosse bête toute noire sous les draps. Le suspense s'arrête là, ce n'était que le chat, Moxie, qui se cachait pour regarder par la fenêtre --ou pour me faire délibérément peur--.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Le pire c'est que, comme il partait de la chambre, je me suis dit "j'ai du lui faire peur à hurler comme ça". Alors je le rappelle pour le consoler et lui il revient vers moi en miaulant, toutes griffes dehors. Puis il essaie de m'attaquer, il se met sur ses deux pattes arrière et lance les pattes avant. Ce chat est vraiment un saligaud: montrez une once d'affection et il prend ça pour de la faiblesse et en profite pour attaquer. Une fois de plus, j'en suis revenue à devoir élever la voix pour le chasser de ma chambre. Heureusement il a plus peur de moi que moi de lui.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">C'est vraiment triste pour moi que ce chat me déteste, il est pourtant si câlin avec sa maîtresse. :-(</p>

<p>Et en rentrant à la maison j'ai eu une petite surprise sur mon lit, et pourtant c'est pas mon anniversaire ;) : j'avais laissé ma porte ouverte et le chat est venue s'endormir sur mon lit. Du coup elle a eu droit à des caresses et moi à des ronrons.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal">They say that the first step to recovery is realizing that you have a problem.<span>  </span>Well, I am a recovering PM-aholic. <span> </span>Once I started working with Agile teams as an Agile coach (aka ScrumMaster), I realized that I had an addiction to many things PM-like, especially being the center of the team’s communication.<span>  </span>Being the center was a key success factor in my previous phase-based projects.<span>  </span>Being the schedule-master, the one “in the know”, the hub of communication was absolutely critical to keeping a couple dozen team members all marching toward the same goal when none of them were truly working together.<span>  </span>Not so in Agile teams.<span>  </span></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><span></span><font face="Times New Roman"><!--more--></font></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal">&#160;</p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal">In fact, that successful characteristic in phase-based projects is a serious detriment to Agile teams.<span>  </span>Notice even the difference in the way I talk about the two experiences – before, I ran projects, now I am involved with teams.<span>  </span>This is a very important distinction that signals my change in mindset.</p>
<p>Here are two practical things I practice that allow me to remove myself from the center of the team’s communication.</p>
<ul>
<li>One: In the standup, look at the floor.<span>  </span>Don’t make eye contact with the team members so that they can interact with one another.<span>  </span>The standup is not a status report to the coach, it is a way for the team members to calibrate amongst themselves.<span>  </span>(Thanks to one of my Coach friends for calling me on this and suggesting this tactic – it works).</li>
<li>Two: Don’t be the first to jump to the board to write.<span>  </span>Instead, ask the team, “Should we capture this?”<span>  </span>Or just wait.<span>  </span>And wait, and wait if necessary.<span>  </span>Ask yourself: what is the worst thing that will happen if no one captures this?<span>  </span>(Hint: it’s probably not too bad and certainly something from which the team can recover).</li>
