Continuing with meditation, the Catholic retreat center, El Tabor, was also the site of Panama’s first and only in-residence Transcendental Meditation TM-Sidhi course, back in 1987 I believe. How I know that is because Sudarshani learned the sidhis there. She thinks it was a 12 day course because all of the sutras and an extended “flying sutra” program were taught together. She could not afford the $2000 to learn in the USA so she inquired about taking the course while she was living down here. Well, no one in the Panamá TM movement had thought of that option before and there were no plans to try it. So Sudarshani rounded up a bunch of meditators who wanted to learn the sidhis and who could pay the $500 course fee. Then she searched for an affordable facility in which to hold the course, one that was quiet (a tall order for Panamá!). El Tabor filled the bill. She invited the TM-Sidhi administrators to come to Panamá from Colombia, the original hub for TM propagation in South America.

They saw it and it was good. The first visit was dedicated to interviews, processing the applications and collecting the money. They returned later to teach the course. There was no one available to manage the retreat logistics so Sudarshani did it. She arranged for kitchen service, purchased the food, planned the menus, hired staff and instructed them in vegetarian cooking. During the course --in between attending knowledge meetings, instructional sessions, checking sessions and doing the “rounding”-- she managed the staff, set the schedule of services and solved the usual problems encountered in the "hospitality industry". In exchange for her “help”, she got a full scholarship for the TM-Sidhi program. An ingenious solution, don't you think?

The "Vecinos Vigilantes" are takin' over and the raca-tacas are goin' down! Yes, the apathy of the good citizens of our barrio, Nuevo Cristóbal, is finally giving way to a fighting attitude. (I'll only mention the "invisible hand" of Sudarshani behind all of this) This is Neighborhood Watch, Panamá style. Our next door neighbor experienced the bliss of a quiet night's sleep and got religion: They hosted a meeting of our neighbors with a police sergeant to find out just what could be done about all the noise, attacks and thievery. It turns out that a lot can be done. But a "VV" has to be organized. Under our "Napoleonic code", suspects have no rights here. The "good folks" thought they were the ones with no rights.

First, the VV learned how to properly ID a suspect so the police can find him. Then they learned how to report incidents: time, address, victim ID, etc. The VV members (20 houses so far) are, at this moment getting push-button bell alarms to alert each other of suspicious activities. The Colonense cops are much feared; they just need to be alerted systematically in order to get action. Ours is the first group of its kind in the city of Colón; hard to believe, not! So the police are pleased with this breakthrough: our needs will get special status-our own VV hotline. They promised to address all of our complaints. Already, two noisy neighbors have been shut up. It's very encouraging but I still can't walk downtown by myself. Mejo said, "Think of Panamá:Colón as in San Diego:TJ". A valid comparison, but parts of the capitol look like TJ also.

We’ve all got emotional baggage – things we don’t deal with. Now we know that this can be not only upsetting but it can actually be physically damaging. If an emotional event is left unresolved, it often results in physical tension in your body. It comes out on all sorts of otherwise unexplained physical symptoms. That’s because the tension is stored in the solar plexus, which affects all organs of the area, including the colon. This on-going tightening of the colon muscle results in a slowing down of the movement of fecal material through the colon – and you get constipated. Not only does colonic irrigation alleviate the constipation, they can help you develop a holistic view of your health and how to improve your whole quality of life.

Beware of colon cleansing claims! Most people don't need to 'detoxify' their bodies. If you feel you must, ask questions and seek out board-certified professionals.

To read the Internet ads, you'd think that our bodies were awash in "toxins" and that we should therefore go to dramatic lengths, such as "colon cleansing" and chelation, to get rid of all this bad stuff.

Don't believe it. Or to put it more gently, don't risk your health or your pocketbook on programs that promise to "detoxify" you, not without doing your homework first. For starters, ask exactly what these supposed "toxins" are. And think twice before undergoing chelation, a procedure that uses powerful drugs to rid your body of heavy metals, such as mercury and lead.

Some alternative medicine practitioners, such as Dr. Glenn Rothfeld, medical director of WholeHealth New England in Arlington, Mass., believe that cleaning out the colon occasionally may help some people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome, "though whether it helps by getting rid of toxins is not clear."

And there's some evidence, Rothfeld said, that the digestive tracts of people who eat typical Western diets may move wastes along more slowly than those of people who eat more fiber. In theory, this longer "transit time" could mean that some substances, like nitrosamines, which are found in preserved meats and are carcinogenic in animals, have more time to cause trouble.

But, generally, people don't need to take dramatic steps to "detoxify" themselves because human bodies have multiple systems for getting rid of wastes: by sweating, exhaling, urinating and defecating. If you really want a "clean" system, eat more fruits and vegetables and less junk food, all of which we're supposed to do anyway.

One testimonial ad, next to a truly gross picture on www.drnatura.com, reads, "How would you feel if long pieces of old toxin-filled fecal matter were stuck to the inside of your colon for months or even years?" But it's simply not true that waste material gets stuck indefinitely in the colon, though the cleansing products themselves can form the gels that look like huge stools.

"I've heard my kids say that there's stuff in the GI [gastrointestinal] tract for seven years," said Dr. Douglas Pleskow, a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "That is the urban legend. In reality, most people clear their GI tract within three days."

Fuzzy science

The ads for colon cleansing are also remarkably vague about what toxins would be purged with enemas, laxatives or special diets. Author Peter Glickman advocates a raw food diet. Asked what toxins his colon-cleansing dietary regimen "Master Cleanse" gets rid of, Glickman named "metabolic toxins," parasites and "environmental toxins . . . whatever kinds of stuff we're breathing in air."

Wrong, said Dr. Bennett Roth, a gastroenterologist at UCLA. "There is absolutely no science to this whatsoever. There is no such thing as getting rid of quote-unquote 'toxins.' The colon was made to carry stool. This is total baloney."

The content of the intestinal tract is mostly bacteria, which can aid digestion. "An enema or laxative does not get rid of more 'bad' versus 'good' bacteria," said Dr. David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. It gets rid of both. "We don't like the idea of carrying bacteria, so lots of folks want to cleanse. But remember, bacteria can be your friend."

Moreover, colon cleansing would do no good for environmental pollutants such as PCBs and DDT, which are stored not in the gut but in fat, and therefore can't be eliminated by colon cleansing, said Dr. Ed Zimney, medical director of Healthtalk.com, a website dedicated to chronic diseases.

Perhaps most worrisome, colon cleansing can actually be dangerous, because most techniques draw fluid from surrounding tissues into the colon. This disrupts the balance of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, said Pleskow of Beth Israel. This shift in fluids can lead to dehydration and low blood pressure.

As for chelation, it can be useful to get rid of heavy metals such as lead in people with very high levels in their blood. But chelation can also be dangerous: The chelating drugs can be toxic to the liver and kidneys.

It is inappropriate for people who have near-normal levels of heavy metals to get chelation therapy, said Dr. Rose Goldman, an associate professor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Beware of practitioners who use hair samplings to detect multiple heavy metals and elements, Goldman said. "This type of hair sampling is highly inaccurate," she said. Some practitioners push chelation on people who complain of vague symptoms like fatigue and difficulty concentrating, which could easily be due to problems other than heavy metal poisoning.

Be sure to be informed!

If you decide on chelation, ask if the physician is board certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Be skeptical about practitioners who say they practice "clinical ecology," which is not a recognized medical specialty.

And before you jump to chelation, said Dr. Alan Woolf, director of the pediatric environmental health center at Children's Hospital Boston, make sure the environment is as free as possible of the contaminant in question, such as lead, so you don't recontaminate yourself. And try conservative treatments first, such as adding calcium, zinc and iron to the diet because these minerals can block the body's absorption of lead.

Before you fall prey to the country's rampant toxic phobia, take a moment to ponder the whole notion of detoxification. And remember, your body has an extraordinary ability to cleanse itself.

Many people have pre-conceived ideas about Colonic Hydrotherapy and Colonic Irrigation and imagine the worst, whereas it is in fact a colonic treatment which leaves you feeling clean, revitalized and well. The general consensus among health professionals is that most, if not all, major diseases starts in the colon this is not surprising when you consider that our foods are laced with preservatives, artificial ingredients, hormones and other chemical additives, says Dr Shiny Benedict from Nirmayee Naturopathy centre in Koregaon Park.

What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy or a Colonic Irrigation is safe and effective method of cleansing the colon that can help to eliminate stored faecal matter, gas mucus and toxic substances from the colon. This is done by introducing filtered, sterilized and temperature-regulated water into the intestine where the food waste is loosened and eliminated through natural contractions of the intestinal muscles. Colon cleansing is best when used in combination with adequate intake of nutrients and regular exercise. It discharges stored toxic substances from the intestine through safe and sanitary method. One session of hydrotherapy equals 30 times of enema.

Why should you be concerned?

The colon functions as the sewer in our body and needs to be clean and healthy for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Colon that is the large intestine is about five feet long and gets toxified very easily due to our irregular food habits. Thus it needs to be detoxified. A healthy colon gives a sense of total well being.

How many sessions do you need?

The number of sessions depends on the particular individual as the digestive system varies from individual to individual. Just as exercise is needed on a regular basis for the fitness of our outer body, colon cleansing tones and rebuilds the regimen of the inner body.

Hoe does it work?

A colon cleansing session helps you to dilute the inbuilt toxins in the body and enhances a healthy digestive system. In the process of the colon cleansing water is let into the colon which gently stimulates its natural muscular contraction and releases all the waste. This process is repeated if necessary.

I've known for some time that my father has prostate cancer. The cancer as not spread and there is a good chance of a full recovery.

However, I learned this afternoon that thanks to the very thorough examinations, blood work, x-rays, CAT scans, and a colonoscopy at one of the top cancer hospitals in the world, it has been discovered that he has colon cancer. It is pathologically unrelated to the prostate cancer. However, it is only because of the one that they caught the other.

He will be undergoing surgery on his colon on Thursday. The doctors are hopeful that they will get it all without the need for chemotherapy. Your prayers are solicited.

UPDATE:

Due to some bleeding, the surgery has been moved up to Tuesday in the early afternoon CDT (early evening BST).

Tony Snow, former White House Press Secretary Died to day at 53 years old. His diagnosis was Colon Cancer. While other news folks at NowPublic have the story covered. I thought it was a good time to talk about the disease that caused Tony to does at such an early age. In the following paragraphs you will find prevention tips, early warning signs, and medical procedures that can detect the disease in its early stages This is one form of cancer, that of detected early can be treated effectively.

The most problematic component of early detection is culture and stigma. Men in the United States appear to refrain from going to a Doctor until there is a debilitating event. Men, on average, die at a younger sage then woman. One of the possible reasons for this is Mens lack of getting psychical checkups during their lifetime. There are many reasons for this including time.

The writer has was diagnosed with Chrohns Disease in 1994. Chrohns is an auto-immune disease that effect the colon. This disease requires that a colonoscopy is performed every 2 years to monitor if the diseased areas have converted to cancer.

The American Medical Association is recommending that Men and Woman get a colonoscopy beginning at 50 years old. Many medical professional have lowered that age to 40 or 45 years old.

[q url="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080712/ap_on_re_us/obit_snow"]

WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53.

"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," President Bush said in a statement from Camp David, where he was spending the weekend. "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work."

Snow died at 2 a.m. at Georgetown University Hospital, according to former employer Fox News.

Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program "Fox News Sunday" from 1996 to 2003, would later say that in the Bush administration he was enjoying "the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I'm ever going to have."

Snow was working for Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio when he replaced Scott McClellan as press secretary in May 2006 during a White House shake-up. Unlike McClellan, who came to define caution and bland delivery from the White House podium, Snow was never shy about playing to the cameras.

With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses.

He served just 17 months as press secretary, a tenure interrupted by his second bout with cancer. In 2005 doctors had removed his colon and he began six months of chemotherapy. In March 2007 a cancerous growth was removed from his abdominal area and he spent five weeks recuperating before returning to the White House.

"All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer," Bush said.

Snow resigned as Bush's chief spokesman last September, citing not his health but a need to earn more than the $168,000 a year he was paid in the government post. In April, he joined CNN as a commentator.

As press secretary, Snow brought partisan zeal and the skills of a seasoned performer to the task of explaining and defending the president's policies. During daily briefings, he challenged reporters, scolded them and questioned their motives as if he were starring in a TV show broadcast live from the West Wing.

Former White House press secretary Snow dies
WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's former press secretary Tony Snow has died of cancer, the White House confirmed on Saturday. Snow, 53, who had been a conservative radio and television commentator, resigned in August 2007 as Bush's spokesman after taking the job the previous year.

Bush in a statement said he and his wife Laura "are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend," and called Snow "one of our nation's finest writers and commentators" who "earned a loyal following with incisive radio and television broadcasts."

Snow learnt in March last year that the cancer he had fought earlier had returned, and he subsequently underwent chemotherapy. He said his decision to quit his post was for financial, not health, reasons. He had earned far more as a commentator than his White House salary.

The affable Snow was credited with livening up the daily news briefings and was admired for his skill at sparring with reporters.

Bush in his statement noted Snow had worked as a speech writer in the administration of his father, former President George H.W. Bush, "and I was thrilled when he agreed to return to the White House to serve as my press secretary."

Bush said it was "a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work," and said Snow's colleagues "will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor."

Snow and his wife Jill had three children. (World Desk Americas, 202-898-8457)

Mr. Snow’s tenure was interrupted by a recurrence of his cancer, and he was quite public about his battle with the disease, saying he wanted to offer hope to other cancer patients. His message to them, he once said, was: “Don’t think about dying. Think about living.”

Dana Perino, who succeeded Mr. Snow as press secretary, said Mr. Snow’s family informed her of the death early Saturday morning.
“It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day,” Mr. Bush said in a statement. “He brought wit, grace and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor.”

With his tall, lanky frame, his thick head of gray hair (it thinned, but never disappeared, during chemotherapy) and his showman’s style, Mr. Snow, who joined the White House in April 2006, helped reinvigorate a press operation that many Republicans believed had been lacking. He loved serving at the White House, once calling it “the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I’m ever going to have.”

Before becoming the chief spokesman for the president, Mr. Snow was a television commentator for Fox News. He was also host of the network’s Sunday public affairs program “Fox News Sunday.” Before joining Fox, Mr. Snow was a syndicated columnist for the Detroit News and USA Today.

At the White House, he turned the daily press briefing into something of a one-man show, challenging reporters’ questions and delivering hard-hitting answers, even when he was occasionally short on the facts. More than once, Mr. Snow was forced to apologize, as he did shortly after taking the job when he erroneously said Mr. Bush viewed embryonic stem cell research as murder.

“He’s velvet glove and iron fist,” Jim Axelrod, the CBS White House correspondent, once said in describing Mr. Snow.

Coming into the job, Mr. Snow had credibility with the media because as a commentator, he had often been critical of Mr. Bush. But the transition from pundit to mouthpiece proved a tad complicated for him, as he struggled to rein himself in.

“Tony Snow broke the mold — he was a completely different kind of press secretary,” said Ann Compton of ABC News, who has covered six presidents. “For one thing, he would give you his own opinion and you’d have to say, ‘Tony, wait, I asked what the president thought.’ “

His snappy sound bites made Mr. Snow an instant hit among Republicans — and he was not shy about breaking barriers. “It’s like Mick Jagger at a rock concert,” Karl Rove, the president’s former political strategist, once said in describing him.

During the 2006 midterm election campaign, Mr. Snow raised eyebrows by using his celebrity to raise money for Republican candidates — something that by Mr. Snow’s own admission, other press secretaries had declined to do for fear of seeming too partisan.

Mr. Snow said simply that his job was to serve the president, and that is what he intended to do.

Ms. Compton, who had been in touch with Mr. Snow in recent months, said his condition took a turn for the worse after the White House correspondents’ dinner in April. “He had a front-row seat and he looked wonderful,” at the event, she said.

But he later e-mailed her to say that he had been suffering intestinal problems — “a bump in the road,” she said he called it — and was having a harder time than expected recovering. On June 13, while traveling in Paris with Mr. Bush, Ms. Compton received another unexpected electronic missive from Mr. Snow, who by then was quite sick, she said.

He had heard that Helen Thomas, the 87-year-old veteran White House correspondent with whom he had had some of his most pointed exchanges, was ill. “If in touch, would you please pass on my love,” Mr. Snow wrote.

Tony Snow has died. He was only 53. CNN Breaking:

Former White House press secretary Tony Snow has died at the age of 53 after a second battle with cancer. Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September. 14, 2007, and joined CNN as a conservative commentator.

His death, while hardly shocking given his health problems, is sad. Like so many media personalities, I had the sense that I “knew” Tony Snow after spending so many hours with him in my living room. He seemed like a decent guy and, certainly, 53 is far to young to die. [/q]

Editors Note:

Colon cancer has hit my family all the way around. I have Chrohns disease, MY Grandmother died months ago with Colon cancer. Tony Snow urged people to get a colonoscopy, a procedure that saves lives. Two weeks ago, one of my church members Father got colon cancer and had he asked his son to go get the procedure. My friend had per-cancerous polyps. I urge anyone who is 40 years old or more to get the procedure. Men get a PSA as well. Colon cancer is deadly but if detected early can be treated. The worst part of the who thing is the prep.

Because of The writer has Chrohns disease I get this procedure every 2 years. It is worth the little bit of discomfort and embarrassment. Tony was on a tour to ask folks to get this procedure. Please take his advise.

Odd to be thinking this, never mind writing it, so soon after the previous season ended in South Am

Odd to be thinking this, never mind writing it, so soon after the previous season ended in South America (and delayed congratulations, by the way, to forwards Damián Mansó and Claudio Bieler, and manager Edgardo Bauza for ensuring some Argentine glory in the Copa Libertadores as Liga de Quito beat Fluminense on penalties last week), but the pre-season is now well and truly underway around the world. Independiente played a friendly in the United States on Thursday, Racing boss Juan Manuel Llop has made up his mind to seriously cut the deadwood from his squad, and Colón have definitely lost Martín Bravo - he's going to Mexico.

Independiente played very poorly against Columbus Crew, who are halfway through the Major League Soccer season and were able to rest a number of their most important players, including former Boca legend Guillermo Barros Schelotto, for Saturday when they play Real Salt Lake in a competitive match. Unsurprisingly for their first match of the pre-season, El Rojo lacked any rhythm, and conceded twice in four minutes before Pablo Vitti got a consolation after coming off the bench fairly late on. Not a result to take too much from, though, and Independiente fans are unlikely to be too disappointed.

When the ten-foot high hedge at the bottom of our garden here in rural south-west England started growing over into our garden, my parents got a new hedge-trimmer and my mum, slightly over-enthusiastically, decided to massacre the thing. It looks Juan Manuel Llop's been taking some tips from her. It's not been reported whether he did it with a chainsaw, but he's made it very clear to José Chatruc and Maximiliano Estévez that their services won't be required in the coming season. OK, I hear you say, two players. It's not much of an axe-attack, just a slight trimming. But he didn't stop there.

As well as Facundo Sava, whose contract won't be renewed, another eight players (at least) will be dropped. The exact names and numbers vary depending on which paper / website you read. Those who are definitely sweating on their futures, though, include Diego Menghi, Reinaldo Navia, Sebastián Arrieta and Bernardo Leyenda. If Adrián Bastía can't be sold to Asteras Tripoli of Greece, he'll probably retire. Goalkeeper Hilario Navarro, meanwhile, is a target for Vélez Sársfield.

Martín Bravo, following his Oscar Ahumada-like conflict with Colón, has been unveiled in Mexico City as the newest member of UNAM's (aka Pumas) squad. Pablo Garnier joined the Colón squad for training though, as did fellow new arrivals Nicolás Torres (from Tigre) and midfielder Sebastián Sciorilli from River Plate. Colón's directors had met with Bravo's agent, the fantastically-surnamed Julio Tymczycym (no, I didn't just faint on my keyboard), to try and reach an agreement prior to the player's signing for UNAM, but nothing could be done. 'If they'd equalled the offers we had from abroad, [Bravo] could have carried on at Colón', Tymczycym said, knowing full well that a provincial Argentine side can't afford anywhere near the financial offers of a major Mexican club.

THAT a healthy way of life can prevent cancer is well known. It is also becoming clear that clean living can help those who already have tumours to survive, and may even prevent the disease from coming back. A number of studies have shown these effects in breast cancer and colon cancer. But how they work at a molecular level remains a mystery.

I am an elderly man and was having a difficult time moving things out the back end. It’s kind of embarrassing to even talk about it. But anyways, I talked to a colon therapist about my problem. The therapist suggested I try the colon hydro-therapy treatment for at least one session. It was a little odd at first, but the staff and ambience of the clinic helped me feel more comfortable. It took about forty-five minutes for the procedure to be completed, but not once did I feel all that uncomfortable. In fact, I found the treatment quite relaxing, as funny as that may sound.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston collected data from 10 studies on the cancer. The several studies have shown that calcium reduces the recurrence of intestinal polyps, growths that can become cancerous, said Stephanie Smith-Warner, an assistant professor of nutritional epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The analysis showed: "people who take more than one eight-ounce glass of milk a day had a 15 percent reduction in risk compared to those who drank less than two glasses of milk a week," she said.

It is the calcium in milk that is primarily responsible for this "modest" reduction in risk, Smith-Warner said. Calcium prevents the proliferation of cells that line the intestinal tract, stopping potential overgrowth that can make the cells become cancerous.

The people with the highest calcium intake, from food and supplements, had a 22 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer, she said adding that "the question of calcium supplements is still not resolved." One reason is that the analysis showed a threshold effect, with the beneficial effect leveling off at a daily intake of 900 milligrams of calcium, roughly the amount in three glasses of milk, she said.

Another is that "some studies suggest that high calcium intake may increase the risk of prostate cancer," Smith-Warner said. "We still need to understand the full range of effects of calcium intake."

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 106,370 new cases of colon cancer and 40,570 new cases of rectal cancer this year, with a combined total of 56,370 deaths.

"The results of this study have brought us closer to understanding how to reduce the risk of a colonic polyps," said a study's co-author Eunyoung Cho, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Calcium is not the only risk factor to be considered, Cho added. Doctors should tell patients that other protective measures are "a healthy lifestyle including exercise, maintenance of body weight and a diet low in red meat and high in fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods."

The study is unlikely to dissuade those who insist that meat and dairy products can lead to cancer. Vegans and groups like the people for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have contended that these foods can contribute to colon cancer because they contain little to no fiber, which has been shown to be protective against the disease.

Lydia Whitfield tried the Gerard’s Green Tea Abdomen Treatment at The Vale Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort:

What They Say

A non-invasive colonic treatment that treats both the internal digestive system and firms the skin on the outside. You’re left looking firm and feeling relieved of tension and bloating.

What We Say

The words ‘colonic treatment fill most people with dread, but this really isn’t as menacing as it sounds.

Your bottom half is completely covered with warm towels, apart from your tummy area, while a scrub is applied to the belly to get rid of any dead skin. This is a bit ticklish, but that could be because I usually neglect this area completely. The scrub is wiped away with hot mitts and then you choose between Beauty Concentrate Cellulite or Beauty Concentrate Stretch Marks for your quarter hour tummy massage. These are water-based products to draw out any excess water. Next, a mix of oils are deeply kneaded into the belly and waist and you really feel everything moving, which is strange but not unpleasant. Extra attention is paid to the intestine area of your tummy and I find myself envisaging the school biology charts of internal organs.

I’ve had conventional colonic irrigation treatments (which are also really effective) and the sensation with this non-invasive massage is similar, though not as intense.

Finally, the piece de resistance, the cold Krioplast mask is applied all over your middle. This is where the Green tea and caffeine play their part. The mask is cold at first but sets into a rubbery mould. You sense flabby bits firming up while you do little more than lie back and, at the Vale, you’re offered a head or foot massage for 20 minutes as the mask gets to work. Finally, the mask is peeled off and finished with another warm mitt wipe-down and application of Universal Lotion, which acts as a final body colon cleanser and skin toner.

After Effects

My tummy was decidedly firmer for a day or two after treatment, although pancake-perfect flatness is a long way off. My skin, including my face, was glowing as it would be after a week-long detox therapy, while internally, my digestion seemed to benefit from the massage. Always ahead of the game, this is a great addition to the Vale’s extensive treatment list and would be ideal for combating bloating before a big event or holiday or as a taster for anyone considering full-on colonic irrigation. But, like the latter, it’s sadly a short-term quick fix rather than the solution to a permanently taut tum.

The Gerard’s Green Tea Abdomen Treatment costs £55 and lasts 55 minutes. For more information, visit www.vale-hotel.com or call: 01443 665800

Oscar Ahumada made a bit of a stir during River's successful Clausura campaign, criticising the club's fans in the aftermath of the superclásico defeat in La Bombonera before going on to be one of the team's best players in the subsequent matches, superb in particular against championship competitors Estudiantes. Today, though, as new River striker Robert Flores joins from the club's Uruguayan namesake, Ahumada looks like he's got more than one foot out of the door at the Monumental...

Flores has signed for River from, um, River, after impressing during the Uruguayan Clausura just gone, which his club led for a good deal of the time and during which, at one point, it looked like they were going to break a decades-old league goalscoring record held by Peñarol and eventually finishing on 48 goals from 15 matches, topping the Clausura table. The 23-year-old has made all the right noises on arriving in Núñez, declaring that 'I'd love to be one quarter of what Enzo [Francescoli] was.' River's fans would love that, too.

Relations between player and club have become so bad that they're reduced to communicating by mail, despite the fact that Ahumada lives only just over a mile away from the Monumental. On the 30th June, Ahumada's contract with River ran out and the player has refused to sign the three-year extension offered to him by the club, resulting in his becoming a free agent.

River seem to be refusing to recognise this last fact, and have written to the player requesting an explanation for why he didn't turn up for training on either Monday or Tuesday of this week. It would seem that Ahumada reckons that by turning up to train, he'd be implicitly accepting the contract he doesn't want to sign with the club. In his previous contract, signed by Domingo Díaz and Mario Israel on behalf of River, by Ahumada himself and by his agent, Néstor Sívori, there was a clause which acted as a pre-contract to the extension River now want him to sign (I really hope I'm reading this correctly...).

Pre-contracts, of course, aren't normally considered binding either by law or by FIFA, and thus today the player denied the clause's legitimacy, despite some very tasty financial terms being offered - on top of his AR$7,000 monthly salary, the club were offering to increase his annual bonus from US$308,000 to US$500,00. Instead, he requested a bonus of US$800,000 along with an 'allowance' of close to US$1 million as recompense for previous bonuses which, rather than being paid to him in cash, had been issued in the form of 10% of his own transfer fee in the event of a sale which now won't take place. One of River's star midfielders looks like he's very much on his way.

Colón striker Martín Bravo is in an almost identical situation, having not trained with the squad this week after declaring himself a free agent under very similar circumstances. The forward, scorer of nine goals during the Clausura, was, like Ahumada, subject to a 'unilateral extension' from his club. If too many Argentine clubs are going to use this tactic to keep hold of players, the financial problems with football in the country are only going to exacerbate as clubs miss out on transfer fees. Both Ahumada's and Bravo's agents are looking for moves to Europe - if their players join a club outside Argentina, FIFA regulations won't permit River or Colón to be compensated at all.
