I've come out of hiding for a few words on the Eisners (ie. the bits that pissed me off most).

Oh wait, an Eisner? Whassat? They're kind of like the Oscars of the comics industry, and the awards for 2008 (on material nominated from 2007) have just been announced.

1. Brandon Graham really should have won that award.

2. Isn't everyone a little tired of "Best Cover Artist" going to James Jean, "Best Colorist" to Dave Stewart and "Best Lettering" to Todd Klein. Can't they just be disqualified or something? Todd Klein has won every award since 1993 except the one he lost to Stan Sakai (thank GOD).

3. "Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan", although a cumbersome title, is a great category. Any of the nominations would have been good, but Taiyo Matsumoto deserves the recognition.

4. Who cares about Chris Ware?

5. I'm not sure why Journalista wasn't nominated for the journalism category. Their work is more thoughtful and even their digest format is so much better than Newsarama's flurry of regurgitated press releases. Oh and the Journalista folks linked to one of my reviews, so they clearly have excellent taste.

6. "Best Digital Comic", I don't know what the criteria for nomination is but all nominees were decidedly ordinary. What about Anders Loves Maria?

7. I'm so glad that 5 won the "Best Anthology" against some tough competition (already pre-ordered my copy of Pixu). It seemed like a new kids vs. establishment thing, maybe. I don't know.

That's it. Back to obscurity.

Woke up early so Elli could have a phone interview for a Title One teacher job. Ate breakfast with an episode of Wipeout. After dancing around the apartment for a bit, we ate lunch (squash soup) and headed outside.

We braved the San Francisco weather and headed to The Travel Immunization Clinic to get a TB test for a whopping $35.00. I had to have a TB test in order to get a job with a school. The administration is always worried that teachers are carriers, when it's a commonly known fact that it's the children that are little petri dishes of infection and sickness waiting to be unleashed upon the faculty population because Little Timmy didn't stay home from school like he should have. From there it was off to a coffee shop to play some Unspeakable Words and drink coffee. An oatmeal raisin cookie managed to find it's way onto our table somehow. Must be because I ordered it. Two games later it was time to head to Whole Paycheck and buy some groceries.

On the way out of Whole Foods, our old lady grocery cart that we purchased from The Container Store lost one of it's main wheels. Near disaster of spilled groceries narrowly avoided, we used a paper clip and a twist tie to fix the wheel and made it half-way home before the tire of one of the smaller front wheels popped off. I think we overloaded the cart and exceeded it's weight limit. Fortunately, we were close to home and brought the cart in on it's back two wheels.

Dinner was a salad and and grilled cheese with the last online of episode of Wipeout (there will be another next week). Online Tetris battles followed the food, and Elli won all challenges, leaving my scores in the dust. If only we had the TV and the XBOX here with us, then I could show her...

Following my humiliating defeat we both surfed the web for 2 hours (oh, dear! where does the time go?!) before realizing that we just spent 2 hours surfing the web. A bowl of popcorn and two episodes of Kim Possible was our answer to the web surfing time lost. Then it was reading time (Powers, vol. 2, issues 14-16 by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming for me and The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner for her). Lights out sometime after midnight in preparation for an outing to the ocean on Saturday.

Kim Possible. Still waiting for the complete series to come to DVD...

Hugh Jackman was flown in to appear as a surprise guest at the X-Men Origins: Wolverine panel. He had just finished filming and was resting in Australia. When he jumped on stage, the thousands of fans stuffed into the room, erupted in cheers and applause.

Read the rest of the story and see the photo of Jackman meeting Wein here.

Another 7 hours that sped by. I managed to do a lot more shopping today though. By dinner time, my backpack was about to collapse under the sheer weight of..wait for it..16 TPBs, a bunch of free mags and comics, some shirts for the family, and two DVDs. I had to go home to minimise my chiropractor bill.

I’ve decided that tomorrow will be my filming day. I’ve taken a bunch of photos already, but the hotel’s slow PC charges by the minute and takes about that long to upload each pic. When I return home on August 3, watch this space for an influx of happy pics and videos.

I would’ve liked to have seen film-maker Kevin Smith and the new Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon panels, but I’m not one for lining up with the masses. The convention floor was slightly less packed this afternoon, as all the various screenings and Q&A sessions were under way. I could move around a lot easier and spend more time talking to retailers, without worrying about people waiting behind me. I saw Mark Waid, one of my favourite writers at BOOM! Studios booth, and Dan DiDio, head of DC Comics, and managed to sneak in a photo with him before he left in a hurry. Nothing personal, I’m sure.

I also chatted to creators Rod Espinosa (The Prince of Heroes) and David Hutchinson (Biowulf) at the Antarctic Press booth about their careers. Then I saw David Mack. What a nice guy. I told him that his work on Daredevil and Kabuki was a hit with some of my mates from work and showed them the beauty that comics could reveal. Mack’s art really is amazing and his work as writer/artist on Kabuki is an experimental joy. He was genuinely happy to hear that his work had opened the eyes of a few comic novices and was very warm and friendly. I picked up his Kabuki Vol. 1 TPB and a DVD focusing on his craft, which I can’t wait to see. The process of an artist is always interesting one. He also threw me a handful of free, signed Kabuki books. I told you he was a nice guy. Oh and I took a photo with him too, just to make my mates jealous.

Handing out a bunch of my cards to a few companies in the small press section was a joy. They all seem happy enough to add mine to their growing collection. One of the main things that has surprised me is how many people are aware of Perth. I thought my sleepy little town would go unnoticed in this with-it metropolis. Good to see us little people aren’t forgotten.

The last stop of the day was a visit to the freebies table. Well, I thought it was the last stop, until I saw a flyer for the CCAS. That’s the Christian Comic Arts Society. I was struggling to contain all my goodies with the only two hands God has given me, but I knew I had to visit this booth. I spoke with the two friendly guys there for a while as we discussed the thriving Christian comic creators community, my work for INFUZE and a bunch of other stuff. With their, “Free Prayer” sign they stand out from the crowd, that’s for sure. Over the last two days of the Con, they have three panels, which I will do my best to attend. I should be in my element there and make some interesting contacts. All in all; an eventful day. My budget has pretty much evaporated, but then again, I’m surprised it’s lasted this long.

First thing first, I'm really happy to know that people out there are viewing my blogs! I thought I was talking to myself, and that I was the only one getting the kickout of my 'em. (Yes, I do believe my blogs pretty awesome)
So thanks!

Second thing... if this is the first time you're reading my blog, you need to know that I root for DC Comic and I don't... really like... Marvel. >_< Just not liking the fact that there are more people who knows Marvel, compared to DC.
... and the previous blog which i talked about Marvel (Runaways) got the MOST blog views.

UGHHHH, WHY PEOPLE, WHYYYYY????!!!!!!!!! STOP SEARCHING FOR MARVEL TAGS!

If you like Marvel, then give DC Comics a shot. It's not all about Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Man, I'm such a hypocrite.

and gee, I'm getting off topic.

So, what I really enjoy about Marvel. You herad that right, what I like about Marvel is...

The Rogue and Gambit coupling!

Marvel fans are going to hate me for saying this, but they are the best thing about Marvel! And being a Gambit fangirl they are the HOTTEST COUPLE EVER!

Gambit was my first ever superhero crush! I was a pre-teen (I'm pretty sure I wasn't even double-digit y/o), crushing on a bad-boy X-men! I grew up watching the old school X-men cartoon on Sunday mornings (Spiderman and His Amazing Friends was on before X-men. And after X-men, Goosebumps was on!), and one of the biggest reasons I watched X-men back then was to catch Gambit in action.

Wait, that might've been the only reason. I didn't really get the storyline anyway... hah... *laughs*

And the cooler thing is, I thought Rogue was the best female character in it! and I also thought the way she talked was cool :) And I still think she's one of the more attractive super-heroine.

Years goes by, and just recently I found out that Gambit and Rogue are an actual couple! I was so ecstatic! And I paraded around reading tons of Rogue/Gambit fanfictions.
But this didn't neccesarily mean that I would pick up X-men.
I'm happy with reading fanfics.
:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Rogue and Gambit are the best superhero couple out there!
:D

<3!

Here are my sketch cards for Fallcon. I drew the same cartoon on all of them with slight variations. Hopefully I'll have some mini-comics based on this character by the time the convention rolls around. My germs man and his pathetic Catch-22. He is afraid to use his hand sanitizer because there are germs on the bottle. I did a full-color illustration of this scenario a couple years ago, and stuck it in a file folder. I haven't had time to DO anything with it until now. The original can be seen in my Facebook albums...I can't remember whether I uploaded it to my Scribbles and Sketched page on this blog...

And the pre-Shark Week/The Dark Knight adoration comes to an end. What a long, strange trip it

And the pre-Shark Week/The Dark Knight adoration comes to an end. What a long, strange trip it's been. Let's just enjoy a few links and quietly and calmly slip into the weekend...

For starters, a 15 year old Florida kid didn't jump the shark, he jumped on it. Apparently sharks don't fucking like that.

Dark Knight star Christian Bale was arrested for apparently assaulting his mother and sister in a London hotel room. The thing is... I don't think this makes him look all that bad to anyone. I mean, he's Christian Bale, for fuck's sake. When you hear this story, you kinda wonder if his mother and sister deserved it (they were apparently talking shit about his wife).

Are you looking for love? Are you also looking for BRRAAAINNNNSSS?

Sometimes crime is the only option for dwarves. That, or being tosssed.

Dane Cook inspires crime spree! Probably a good thing since he doesn't really inspire laughs anymore.

Ben Stein is a smart guy, but sometimes he's also an idiot. Glenn Beck, whose show he appeared on, is always an idiot.

Turns out, anecdotes are not science.

Elvis wasn't just the king of rock n' roll, he may've also been the ancient Roman god of it.

Remember the baby on the cover of Nirvana's Nevermind? Well, he's 17 now. And he's kind of glad that so many people have seen his cock.

Comic-Con is this weekend in San Diego, so there'll probably be all sorts of previews for upcoming movies and TV shows coming out of that since Hollywood has really jumped on that avenue and started humping it to death. There may even be some comic book news coming out of there too, who knows. Last year they repeated attendance above 125,000 people so I don't even want to think about what that looks like this year.

The world's first test tube baby turned 30 today.

NASA is considering exploring sex in space. (Me too!)

Speaking of space, apparently aliens have visited Earth and no one told me?

Oh, and turns out that aliens and UFOs are actually just fallen angels? That's just... great.

And speaking of nutcases: Ultimate Christian Wrestling. Seriously. I invite you to look at the pictures. These guys look like they should be out winning white trash equivalent of Tony's somewhere.

But that's okay because the sex convention is offering half price admission to Christian missionaries.

Deerhoof are approaching the remix in a fresh new way.

The Dark Knight's already made about $200 million at the box office, and has become the fastest movie to do so (it crossed that milestone on Tuesday), so $300 million is considered not that far away. This movie will most likely be in the $400 million club.

If they (and of course, when) they do a third Batman movie in this current cycle, I wonder if they can get the permission from Frank Miller to just call it "The Goddamn Batman." I'm sure he'd have no mind as long as their was lots of scantily clad caricatures of women and images of dark knight perverting the youth and kicking prostitutes in the stomach.

George W. Bush = Batman?

Here's an excellent Mamma Mia review. Speaking of movies that look more painful than cancer, Step Brothers and the aforementioned X-Files 2 came out today. I don't plan to see them, but I wonder if poor Commander Light is going to. The problem (or one of them, at least) with Step Brothers, is that it looks like John C. Reilly and Will Farrell are playing the exact same character. But then again, you could say that ever since Reilly entered the Appatow-ized movies, he's been basically playing Will Farrell in different roles. You could've dropped Will Farrell into Walk Hard at any point and not missed a beat.

Well, that seems like a good time as any to wrap up this cap off to pre-Shark Week mania/The Dark Knight celebration...

Remember: Actual Shark Week starts on Sunday.

And coming soon here on Counterforce: Occam Razor! You're going to want to make sure you have something to clean yourself up a bit after that.
