Youtube gets smart with an “audio preview” feature – intended to "humiliate the illiterate and inane commenters into rethinking their posts" . There's also the Firefox add-on called "YouTube Comment Snob" you can use to filter out the crap. Unfortunately many commenters won't see anything inappropriate with what they wrote and how it sounds when it's played back to them (can't you tell that by simply re-reading it?). Better yet, when you go on Youtube ignore the comments altogether.

Every year in the month of October, for the past 500 years, a four day animal fair is held in Bhawgarh Bandhya, near jaipur, in the Looniyawas village. Held in honour of the Sri KhalKhani Mata-this fair showcases the best of Donkeys money can buy. There is sale and purchase of donkeys, race featuring donkeys, poem recitals in praise of donkeys, prizes for the best bred donkey of the marwari or kathiawari breed, beauty pageant to find the Ms. Donkey & Mr.Donkey among other events. The owners name their donkeys after the bollywood stars to enhance their charms in the eyes of the buyers.Even so the organisers have a difficult time every year to find VVIPs to do the honours at the fair.

As people are preferring to buy horses instead of donkeys or mules for their use these days a lot of horses turn up at the fair every year also. For example this year there were only 300 donkeys and 50 mules but about 1200 horses at the mela. Also on display was a white colored Shyam Karan Horse worth 31 lacs.According to the scriptures Lord Ram set loose a Shyam Karan horse when he performed the Ashwa medh yagh.

Legend has it that Sri Khalkhani mata performed a miracle for her devotee in distress by turning a bag of stones into gold coins.Since then this fair is held every year.

I took a week off from writing about comments to see what we could do differently. This week, rather

I took a week off from writing about comments to see what we could do differently. This week, rather than round up up the most commented upon stories, I'm going to highlight a few of the funniest/most thought provoking comments for GazetteOnline.

Starting out on a lighter note, Adam Belz's story about Linn County offices staying at Westdale for now drew a lot of east side vs. west side sniping.

One westsider had a solution, though. Ernest Rimrodt wrote in his comment "Succession now"

Now is the time for the Westside of Cedar Rapids to revert back to Kingston City. The name of our town before the Eastsiders took us over illegally if history is correct. We have the Police Station, Water Treatment Plant, National Guard HQs, the Airport and now City and County Government agencies so I say its time to kiss Cedar Rapids good bye and go our own way.
We have been screwed long enough by folks with nothing more than Eastside and downtown interests and now is the time for succession...The Westside IS the Best side and we need out freedom to form and carve out our own destiny..

The word he was looking for in his title was likely "secession," and I don't know if his comment was serious or not, but it certainly got people talking.

Moving on to more serious topics, a story by Alicia Ebaugh about Cedar Rapids' borrowed armored personnel carrier drew a very divided reaction.

One long-time commenter, Censorship Sucks, wrote a comment titled "woohoo, more para-military wannabe's"

Just what this country needs more of, over-zealous para-military police forces. All you have to do is do a little research on the hundreds or thousands of botched police and SWAT raids in this country to know this isn't a good idea. Yes, I realize it's on loan. I also realize that even though they say it's out of the budge NOW doesn't mean that they won't try to sneak it into the budget later.
I suggest reading the many articles written about botched para-military police raids by Radley Balko on his website: http://www.theagitator.com/category/paramilitary-police-raids/
Also check out the map of botched raids on the CATO Institute's website: http://www.cato.org/raidmap/

Some people didn't like his take, though, and were happy with the police's decision to try out the vehicle.

Bob Johnson wrote in his comment "Show Me"

Show me where the CRPD has broken into the wrong home and killed a person under false pretenses/bad detective work or whatever. There are hundreds of SWAT/SRT teams across America and there are thousands and thousands of raids done for a variety of purposes every year. Not every one of them goes off perfectly I'm sure. But there is a big difference implying that it happens all the time, especially here in CR.
I am not a fan of buying this vehicle from our city funds, but if it could be obtained with grants etc from the feds then woo-hoo. I believe the big black and white EM50 they got a few years ago was paid for this way. A vehicle like this could be very usefull to not only CR but regionally as well. A vehicle like this could end up saving many lives in a rampaging shooter scenario, where officers utilize it to safely transport themselves and civilians to/from an active shooter.
In the end would it be useful to the police.....yes. Is it needed, depends. Officers never want to have to need their gun in a situation either, but they have one in case because we don't live in Maybury. Should it come from the city budget, I don't want it too for a number of reasons, but if it came from grants etc then great. I do like the idea someone said about people here in CR fabricating one, I think that would be interesting!

And for the last comment, I'll share a funny comment on a very serious story. Whirlpool is laying off nearly 440 people from its Middle Amana plant, which made a lot of people angry, especially in light of the dismal economic news elsewhere.

In his post "New Stock Market Terms," Tan Dog wrote:

And here are some new Stock market terms for these times;
CEO --Chief Embezzlement Officer.
CFO-- Corporate Fraud Officer.
BULL MARKET -- A random market movement causing an investor to
mistake himself for a financial genius.
BEAR MARKET -- A 6 to 18 month period when the kids get no
allowance, the wife gets no jewelry, and you ain't get'n any either
VALUE INVESTING -- The art of buying low and selling lower.
P/E RATIO -- The percentage of investors wetting their pants
as the market keeps crashing.
BROKER -- What my broker has made me.
STANDARD & POOR -- Your life in a nutshell.
STOCK ANALYST -- Idiot who just downgraded your stock.
STOCK SPLIT -- When your ex-wife and her lawyer split your
assets equally between themselves.
FINANCIAL PLANNER -- A guy whose phone has been disconnected.
MARKET CORRECTION -- The day after you buy stocks.
CASH FLOW-- The movement your money makes as it disappears

I got a comment on my previous post that had me thinking. (Yes, thinking, hahaha!)
I’ve been

I got a comment on my previous post that had me thinking. (Yes, thinking, hahaha!)

I've been doing a lot of reading online articles and blogs.

I'v'e also taken to reading the comments and reactions on any blog or article.

These are usually more revealing (and interesting) than the article because it is how people really think-feel. Granted that anything on the internet is veiled in anonymity, giving commenters the freedom to be more venomous, more obnoxious, more hateful, and more extreme, than in real, face-to-face, life.

There is a point to all this, I'm getting there.

Most people like to feel they belong. It is a trademark of the Baby Boomers, in fact. They invented peer pressure I think. I would know, since I am a Boomer myself, and I can safely say that political correctness IS peer pressure. If you are not politically correct, you're on the outside looking in, effectively exiled from polite society.

It isn't just mean girls. It's even worse, because once a path (or political party) is chosen, there is no other alternative but to wholly invest onself into the attitudes and behaviors that best exemplify that path. This means there is no objectivity, no rationality, but feeling the pressure to conform. When that happens, what's left is passion.

Not to mention, most people also like to be right. Often, being right means winning. Often, it means being better, superior, than the other guy or the other side. Often, when we lose, we see ourselves as deficient, or inadequate, or inferior, to the winners. No one ever wants to lose.

So for me, it's come to a reason versus romanticism thing. By romanticism, I mean emotion and subjectivity, and by reason, I mean emotion's opposite, which is cold hard logic and reality.

The point is no one is immune to this election season's emotional tenor. It has prompted me to start this blog. It's a place to vent. Disgusted enough to leave the Republican party, I can't seem to shake the anti-Democrat line, and the "condescending and elitist" attitude that partisans naturally take. At least, I've been made aware and I'm trying. But it may be a matter of a years-long habit, where passion rules and political correctness requires we take sides, and then to defend those sides as if there were no alternative. Objectivity, logic, tells us there are indeed other sides.

So why aren't the ranks of Independents swollen with disaffected voters? Why don't we have more political parties? Why have we let just two parties represent our interests? Or why have political parties at all? Why not just elect individuals who best represent our needs and goals, and represent to the world what best serves our country?

Why indeed, to paraphrase Alfred E. Neuman, do we get a choice of two presidential candidates and 50 for Miss America?

I always get a buzz from receiving a new comment and I love to respond, opening up conversations and helping to build a community based around the site.

As i know the majority of bloggers* feel the same way as me I have made a commitment to myself that I will always try to comment on any blog I find from now on. I may not always manage it, but I'm certainly going to try. If you want to do the same thing, then great. Tell me about it here.

I have just written an article on this subject over on the FuelMyBlog blog [here]. It looks like it may turn into a very big debate, which is, after all the whole point! Why not pop over there and give you own opinion?

2. I would advise him not to be disheartened. There are so many other ways of influencing Pemuda than meeting with them. I will not enumerate them as he will know how to use these other ways.

3. If I remember correctly he won the post of Deputy Chief of Pemuda without anyone casting any votes. He won it uncontested. Apart from UMNO Youth chief Hishamuddin Hussein who gave other possible candidates a tongue lashing - telling them in no uncertain terms that they must not contest the position because it was reserved for the Prime Minister's son-in-law, others suspected of having ambitions to contest for the post received phone calls from family members of the PM and other influential supporters not to do anything to spoil the ambition of this first time UMNO member with absolutely no track record from winning uncontested.

Assalamualaikum YABhg Tun.

Semoga YABhg Tun sekeluarga dirahmati Allah.

That really said enough, in my opinion. I find downward insults on Khairy Jamaluddin as a tad bit disappointing. It'd be nice to hear someone say something intelligently sarcastic about the man instead of just 'budak hitam' or 'budak hingusan' or 'cock-talker'. And Tun Mahathir does it brilliantly. It's imposibble to find a clean and honest politician. Look at Abdullah, we thought he was clean no? In this writer's opinion, Khairy Jamaluddin steered his boat in Malaysian politics the wrong way. It'd be best for him to shut up and stop challenging people like Anwar Ibrahim and hold his tongue all the way 'till his father-in-law steps down. Then he can unleash whatever demon he posseses. That way, Malaysians won't hate him so much to a point of tagging his videos under 'monkey boy' on Youtube. The man has got some intelligence, Ladies and Gentlemen, as much as we hate to admit it, he's got a few things right and he's the epitome of human manipulation, and a living example of what big money can get you and make you powerful. Yet at the same time, he has records of stupidity too and his only flaw is that he has the ability to make people hate him even more with his ways and his balloon-sized ego and self -esteem. He should deflate it a little bit, he should take things in a much gentle way, stop challenging people, stop asking for sympathy, and show us what he can really do to help build UMNO and contibute more to the society than just holding open houses and giving us talks on the podium.

The Prince, Ladies and Gentlemen, is really rushing. The King will soon be stepping down and so the Prince needs to move fast. As for those who compare him to Anwar Ibrahim, please, don't. As much as I'm not a fan of the de facto leader, still, Khairy does not deserve the same reputation as Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar is more than Khairy. Anwar is better. All that Khairy's got is a smooth tongue; eloquence. He chose the easy way to get into politics. Anwar had to prove himself. Really different situations, see? So please, enough of this comparison with Mr. Ibrahim. No one can reach up to Anwar's level. Not that I'm proud of Anwar Ibrahim but really, I just want everyone to stop saying that same old line, 'Khairy ni sama macam DSAB'!

I know Khairy will win UMNO youth chief post. And good luck to him, I hope he survives long enough after Abdullah steps down. I'm looking forward to Mr. Khairy's next step in his attempt to be the youngest PM before 40. He's got what? 8 more years before reaching that age, no?

All hail the Prince.

In 1614, the new colony at Jamestown in what is now Virginia was a death camp of starving colonists

In 1614, the new colony at Jamestown in what is now Virginia was a death camp of starving colonists with little hope of survival. The Indians were mad at them, the London Company was tired of sending supplies. John Rolfe, who married Pocahantas, had learned to smoke tobacco while in London and decided to take a shot at cultivating tobacco in Jamestown, and not the Nicotiana Rustica of the local Indians but he chose the coveted Nicotiana Tabacum strain then being grown in Trinidad and South America--though Spain had declared a penalty of death to anyone selling such seeds to a non-Spaniard. In 1614, in what has been called by at least one historian the most momentous event of the 17th century, the first shipment of Virginia tobacco was sold in London. Two years later, in June, 1616, Rolfe and other leaders of the colony arrived in London to discuss the newly successful crop. Despite James I's disapproval of the colony's dependence on a crop he despised, the very survival of his namesake colony could be at stake. And, of course, James could not ignore the enormous import duties Rolfes' Virginia tobacco, "Orinoco", brought to the royal treasury--Londoners and others around the world liked its taste and began demanding it. Since all sales had to be made through London, the English treasury grew with every transaction. Tobacco became such a popular crop that a law had to be passed to force some food cultivation in the suddenly affluent colony. By 1619 Jamestown had exported 10 tons of tobacco to Europe and had left behind its dismal history of starvation, cannbalism and general debotchery.
By 1639 Jamestown had exported 750 tons of tobacco. Tobacco was the American colonies' chief export. The Jamestown colonists had not found gold, nor a route to the South Seas, nor the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island. But they had found tobacco. Tobacco had brought the settlement from wretched failure to giddying success. Tobacco had created the need for labor at any price (even institutionalized slavery), and--since it wore out the soil every 4-7 years--the mad rush for land all through the waterways of the Chesapeake Bay--or, as the entire area soon became known, "Tobacco Coast."
Tobacco can well be credited with making Jamestown the first permanent English colony in the New World.
So tobacco has been a critical crop and an ingrained habit for many years, well before cigarettes were even invented. In fact, the prohibition against direct sales of tobacco to other countries (all such sales had to be made through London, where hefty excise taxes were levied) was one of the main aggravations leading to the American Revolution.

I have had very little time to get out in Azeroth lately. Seems there is a new threat on the o'l horizon. Somethin about a Litch King. they got use worken day n night. Armor, and weapons for the defences. But I did get a chance to run with some new members to our little guild. One Pally, he would be perfect if he was not a human, and to gnome rouges. Them rouges are workin hard to get setup to win War Song Gultch for the allies. but the Pally is workin on being a tank. WOOT!

Nother thing to look forward too. there seems like there may be some break through in spells that the High Pally may hand that knowledge down soon. Probable to fight this Litch King thing. I'll have to grab me a group and hunt this thing down. but one step at a time. First a Glass of Ale!!!

How comments affect whether we see bias in a news story

Preliminary research presented at the Convergence and Society conference in South Carolina suggests

Preliminary research presented at the Convergence and Society conference in South Carolina suggests that comments on a news story affect the perception of bias in the story itself.

Michele Jones, a Phd student at the University of North Carolina, wanted to investigate the impact that comments had on credibility and reader perception of bias in the news

She conducted an online experiment with 76 participants reading a story about abortion which carried either pro-life or pro-choice comments.

What she found was that readers who have strong opinions will perceive bias against their side in a news story. This is called the Hostile Media Effect and has been found in numerous studies.

But the picture was more confused when it came to the impact of comments on perceptions of bias. A statistical analysis showed that the comments themselves did not lead readers to see more bias in the story.

However, the participants were also able to add their thoughts at the end of the study and these suggested that the nature of the comments affected how the story was perceived.

So, for example, people might see the original story as balanced, but the tone of the comments made them wonder if the journalist had deliberately chosen pro-life or pro-choice comments.

Jones sees this study as a starting point as it throws up interesting questions about the relationship between a news story and the discussion around it.

At a time when many news outlets are experimenting with different forms of user-generated content, this is an area that would benefit from further study.

Well, we need to take out some time and help someone who is sinking in a quicksand of progay christi

Well, we need to take out some time and help someone who is sinking in a quicksand of progay christian ideology. His name is Brandon. He did not like what GCM Watch said about Tonex. The comment however was chocked so full of inconsistencies, half truths, lies, and distortions of scripture that my heart went out to Brandon. Especially because he says he is a musician who "studies religious theology". I'm not sure if that means he studies the Bible, but nonetheless I am appealing to our mature, seasoned saints to help Brandon understand the error of his thinking. Perhaps then, he will have a metanoia experience and serve the Lord in with a pure heart. You may address any portion of his comment you feel "led" to deal with. Thanks!

I have sat here and read many of the comments and the article. I am going to reply to this as a person who studies religious theology. As a person of color, A christian and a LGBT identified Christian and a musician. To start with I find it amazing how we consider ourselves as followers of Christ. Now being a person who studies theology never once do you hear Jesus talk about or condemn homosexuality. Yet we call ourselves followers of Christ. That’s the first problem Now I have read and seen you all have taken bible scriptures and have thrown it in our faces and expect that to be the end of it. You pick and choose what it is you want to read and say. I have yet to see any of you people who have taken these clobber scriptures and use all of the context. When you have taken all the context then your at the next level for discussion. Next speaking as a person of color, I find it interesting that you have not remembered that we have struggled against a long period of prejudice and hatred. Do you really think as people who have struggled to get rights, to be treated equal and with respect. Do you honestly find yourself any different than the people who hate people of color. So to condemn homosexual people I just find that very odd. As a christian you focus mostly on the judgement of God. Now to back up and correct the one person earlier who spoke of Bishop Carlton Pearson and Dr. Yuvette[sic] Flunder they teach exactly what Jesus taught. We should not worry about the judgment of God but the Grace and Mercy of God, as well as Gods love he has for every person everything every being. If most of you could understand that it is not about us. It is not about who loves who and who is doing. It is all about worshiping and serving God. When we as a people can get off the the petty things and realize it is about Gods love. We will not have to care about what someone else is doing because we will be more focused on Gods love and loving each other. Doing that will cover all of the thing. REMEMBER Jesus taught us love. I have yet to see you scripture clobbers talk about the love of God. Lastly I will talk now as a musician. I have seen you all talk about not to promote Tonex because of his life style. Well is this the case many of your churches will not have good music. Most of church musicians are gay. Most of you people in the church especially the pastor knows it. You won’t see that pastor get rid that musician unless they cause a scene. The pastor knows about the lifestyle but is not willing to loose his members because of bad music. Most of these pastors will pimp these people for their benefit and use their gifts. So next time you think about not promoting a musician because of their lifestyle. You remember that most churches run the music department by gay men who write that music and teaches the music that gets people in your church. Remember that!!! Now what we need to praying for is not for god to change somebody. We need to pray first that we as Identified Christians grow stronger in God. That is what we NEED to be doing, there would be much less DRAMA if we could do that. Next as we grow in God we need to get a reality check of what it is Jesus was teaching us on how to live. If you all don’t know Jesus has never turned away from anyone, nowhere in the bible will you see that. Some how you bible clobbers have missed that fact. I say this as a closers, don’t let ignorance (which means lack of knowledge) prevent you who identify as Christians from the important thing which is Gods love for us, and by Gods grace (which means we get what we don’t deserve) and Gods Mercy( which means we didn’t get what we do deserve) Don’t let this prevent you from the real reason as to why we serve the God we serve and have the Faith we have as Christians. Peace with you will, Blessings Brandon
