un còmic... els bons còmics en la nostra llengua estan en ratxa, i fa poc La Magrana ha publicat Fun Home, d'Alison Bechdel. En aquesta obra autobiogràfica, l'autora narra els records de la seva infantesa i adolescència en un petit poble dels EUA, i com anirà descobrint la seva homosexualitat en aquest procés. A més a més, decobrirà també que comparteix aquesta opció sexual amb el seu pare, cosa que l'ajudarà a entendre les sensacions que ha viscut a casa des de petita. una pel·lícula... laquest cap de setmana intentaré veure d'una vegada el documental Nömadak TX, que el tinc pendent des de fa mesos, i això no té perdó. Amb un historial de premis aclaparador, la pel·lícula ens explica el viatge musical de dos txalapartaris bascos que recorren el món compartin les seves vivències musicals amb d'altres cultures.

una activitat... a la Fundació Miró hi exposa Olafur Eliassion, artista danès - islandès nascut que es centra en l'estudi de la percepció sensorial, les lleis de la física i els fenòmens naturals. Si penseu que hi vull anar només perquè és nòrdic o islandès... ho heu encertat!

un llibre... estic en plena ressaca del llibre "En tránsito de sueño en sueño", de Clara Valverde. L'escriptora hi narra els quatre anys que va viure amb els indis cri del Québec, i tot el què en va aprendre d'ells. És una obra que fa reflexionar sense pretendre-ho en excés, i que està escrita en un estil senzill i sincer que la fa sentir molt propera. El perill està en l'inevitable ànsia que provoca de voler fer les maletes per marxar cap allà demà mateix.

On Thursday ( 7/17/08 ) was the topping out ceremony for the new bioinformatics building located at UNC Charlotte's CRI campus. As one of the speakers at the event put it 'the 20th century was about electronics, the 21st century will be about bioinformatics.' I'm glad to see that Charlotte has the foresight to begin working on this now, but I wouldn't expect anything less. I also think there's a great opportunity for collaboration on bioinformatics between the College of Computing and Informatics and the College of Engineering.

A topping out ceremony is a Scandinavian tradition where the last beam is ceremonially lifted into place with an evergreen tree sitting atop.

Le bare dei due militari israeliani

Tel Aviv, 16 luglio 2008- Israele perde le ultime speranze di riabbracciare i due militari rapiti nel 2006 dai miliziani di Hezbollah. La tv del movimento sciita ha mostrato per prima le bare riconsegnate a Israele. Al Manar di Hezbollah ha trasmesso le immagini di due casse nere contenti i resti dei soldati Ehud Goldwasser e Eldav Regev che venivano scaricate da una grossa auto grigia con i vetri oscurati.

L'ufficiale di collegamento di Hezbollah incaricato dello scambio di prigionieri, Wafiq Safa ha affermato che "i due prigionieri israeliani sono stati per due anni tenuti in un luogo segreto, nonostante la guerra che Israele ha lanciato contro di noi e nonostante le pressioni internazionali" per ottenerne il rilascio. "Ora ci attendiamo che Israele consegni alla Croce Rossa i prigionieri e le salme dei nostri martiri", ha aggiunto.

Lo scambio di prigionieri al valico di Capo Naqura avverrà materialmente dopo che sui resti delle salme dei due soldati israeliani sarà compiuto il test del Dna. Per la restituzione delle salme dei soldati Ehud Goldwasser e Eldav Regev Israele consegnerà anche i resti di 199 combattenti Hezbollah e palestinesi, riesumate nei giorni scorsi, oltre a cinque militanti libanesi che verranno trasportati in elicottero all'aeroporto internazionale di Beirut.

Qui verranno accolti nel corso di una cerimonia dal presidente Michel Suleiman, dal premier Fuad Siniora e dal presidente del parlamento Nabih Berri. Nel pomeriggio ci sara' inoltre una manifestazione alla periferia meridionale di Beirut, a cui è prevista la proiezione su un maxischermo di un discordo per l'occasione del leader di Hezbollah Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Il movimento sciita Hezbollah ha preparato nel Sud del Paese una accoglienza "da eroe" ai cinque prigionieri, innalzando sulla strada costiera verso la capitale innumerevoli bandiere e archi di trionfo e allestendo un palco nei pressi del confine per una prima cerimonia pubblica. Secondo quanto ha affermato ieri il comandante di Hezbollah per il Sud Libano shikh Nabil Kaouk, lo scambio è di fatto "una ammissione ufficiale di sconfitta" da parte di Israele.

Al momento, al punto di valico di Rosh ha-Niqra e' giunto il primo camion del convoglio della Croce Rossa internazionale che portera' in Libano le salme dei 199 combattenti libanesi e di altre nazionalita'. Complessivamente dovranno transitare dal valico 23 camion. Le salme erano state sepolte per anni in un cimitero della Galilea.

(ANSA) – 10:16 - Beirut, 15 lug - Il movimento sciita libanese Hezbollah si prepara a riservare un'accoglienza da eroi ai cinque miliziani che domani saranno liberati da Israele in cambio della restituzione dei due soldati catturati dai miliziani dello stesso Hezbollah con un raid oltre frontiera il 12 luglio 2006 e che in molti danno per morti in prigionia.

"Grazie alle armi della resistenza libereremo i nostri prigionieri" è scritto su striscioni e manifesti affissi nei villaggi di origine dei cinque prigionieri e nei quartieri meridionali di Beirut, roccaforte del movimento sciita, dove domani ci sarà una manifestazione a cui è previsto che interverrà con un discorso trasmesso su un maxischermo anche il leader di Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Lo scambio, che sarà supervisionato dalla Croce Rossa internazionale, avverrà in mattinata al valico di Naqura.

Oltre ai cinque prigionieri - tra cui Samir Kuntar, un druso libanese condannato a cinque ergastoli per aver partecipato 30 anni fa a un grave attentato terroristico a Naharya - Israele consegnerà i resti di circa 200 miliziani, che Hezbollah definisce "martiri".

Dopo una cerimonia di accoglienza nel Sud del Paese, i cinque verranno trasportati in elicottero all'aeroporto di Beirut, dove si svolgerà un'altra cerimonia di benvenuto, alla presenza di alti funzionari dello Stato e del movimento Hezbollah.

It is characterized by peals of uncontrollable laughter, sometimes accompanied by swooning or falling down to the floor. First-hand accounts from those who have had this experience vary somewhat, but all seem to believe it to be a sign of a "blessing" or "anointing" of the Holy Spirit.

The experience of holy laughter is, by nature, a subjective one. Therefore, in an effort to find the truth of the matter, we must try to be objective.

When our definition of truth depends upon our experience of the world, we are a very short way from becoming entirely relative in our thinking.

In short, feelings do not tell us what is true.

Feelings are not bad - and sometimes our feelings are aligned with scriptural truth. However, sometimes they are aligned with our sin nature.

The fickle nature of the heart makes it a very unreliable compass. "The heart is more deceitful than all else, and is desperately sick; who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). This deceitful-heart principle is specifically applicable to the phenomenon known as "holy laughter." There is no doubt that people have indeed begun to laugh uncontrollably at revival meetings. That is a fact. But what does it really mean?

Laughter is addressed a number of times in the Bible. Often it is used to describe a mocking or scornful response, as was the case with Abraham and Sarah who laughed when God told them they would bear a child in their old age.

Some verses use it as a sign of derision (Psalm 59:8; Psalm 80:6; Proverbs 1:26), and still others make pointed statements about the nature of laughter itself.

Solomon, for example, made the following observation in Ecclesiastes 2:2, "I said of laughter, ‘It is madness,’ and of pleasure, ‘What does it accomplish?’" He then goes on to say, in 7:3, "Sorrow is better than laughter, for when a face is sad a heart may be happy." Proverbs 14:13 says the reverse: "Even in laughter the heart may be in pain, and the end of joy may be grief."

Both of these verses are true: a sad person may laugh to cover his sadness, and a person may cry although they are inwardly happy. So, not only does emotion fail to give us truth, but we also see that laughter is not always indicative of joy, but can mean anger, sadness, or derision. Likewise, the lack of laughter does not automatically mean sadness. Laughter is clearly very subjective.

The most convincing Scriptural argument against what is called "holy laughter" is found in Galatians 5:22-23. It says: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

If self-control is a fruit of the Spirit of God, how can uncontrollable laughter also be a fruit of His Spirit?

Revival leaders claim that being "filled" with the Spirit means that we are sort of "tossed about" by His whims. But the idea that God would make people act drunk, or laugh uncontrollably, or make animal noises as a result of the Spirit's anointing is directly opposed to the way the Spirit acts, according to Galatians 5:22-23. The Spirit described in Galatians 5 is one that promotes self-control within us, not the opposite.

In light of these things, it is profitable to take a look at the following passage from 1 Corinthians 14, where Paul talks about speaking in tongues. "But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?" (v.6)

"For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air” (vv. 8-9).

"What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God." (v. 26-28..)

"...for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints." (v. 33)

In those days, many people in the churches were speaking in languages that were unrecognizable to others, and therefore, Paul says they were useless in the church because the speaker could not edify others with his speech.

The same could be applied to holy laughter. What does it profit (Paul asks) unless we speak to one another with revelation, teaching, knowledge and truth? Again, he says "let all things be done for edification." He caps off his argument by saying, "God is not a God of confusion, but of peace," which makes it clear that he does not want the atmosphere within the church to be one of confusion and meaninglessness, but one of knowledge and edification.

It seems, from what Paul is saying, that which is called "holy laughter" would fall under the category of what is "not edifying" to the body of Christ, and should therefore be avoided.

We have recognized that a) laughter is an unreliable emotional response; b) it can be a sign of several different emotions; and c) it does not accomplish anything useful. Furthermore, uncontrollable spasms of emotion are contrary to the nature of the Holy Spirit. It is advisable, therefore, not to look to "holy laughter" as a means of growing nearer to God or as a means of experiencing His Spirit.

The Hamas website published a letter written by Gilad Shalit to his parents. I do not think this is the same letter as the one delivered earlier this month - that one was undated and this one says "June '08."

The Hamas Al Qassam website is using this letter as supposed proof of its humanity, although Shalit does say that he is suffering both physically and psychologically. Of course, the Red Cross has not been allowed to see Shalit.

In the letter, he also calls for negotiations for his release.

Appello per la liberazione di Ghilad Shalit a due anni dal suo rapimento

Il 25 giugno del 2006 il soldato oggi ventiduenne di Tzahal, Ghilad Shalit, veniva rapito in territorio sovrano israeliano, al confine con la Striscia di Gaza, da terroristi di Hamas. Sono due anni che questo ragazzo è stato privato della sua libertà mentre compiva il suo dovere di servire lo Stato. Da allora non sono pervenute notizie accreditate circa il suo stato di salute e nemmeno la Croce Rossa Internazionale è mai stata autorizzata a visitarlo, così come nel caso di Eldad Reghev e Ehud Goldwasser, i due soldati rapiti sul fronte settentrionale da Hezbollah, 17 giorni dopo Ghilad Shalit.

In questi giorni, il governo israeliano e quello egiziano – che funge da mediatore nelle trattative con Hamas – stanno intensificando i contatti per includere la liberazione di Shalit negli accordi di tregua. Tregua che è stata oggi violata con il lancio di 4 razzi Qassam sulle città israeliane del Neghev occidentale. Tra le richieste di Hamas, quella di rilasciare 450 detenuti palestinesi, molti dei quali con sangue sulle mani, oltre a rappresentare una contropartita sproporzionata per garantire la libertà di un soldato e cittadino israeliano, è un prezzo estremamente alto per la sicurezza stessa dello Stato d'Israele.

In un'ultima lettera presumibilmente di pugno di Ghilad Shalit, recapitata alla sua famiglia il 9 giugno scorso, il soldato esprimeva tutta la sofferenza e le difficoltà di salute, oltre che psicologiche, in cui si trova. Il momento è critico e auspichiamo che le trattative non vengano interrotte e che la mediazione egiziana possa portare ad esiti soddisfacenti. Ci rivolgiamo quindi al governo e alla società italiani affinché, in questa delicata situazione in cui le trattative su entrambi i fronti sembrano essere più che mai aperte, si mobilitino per rompere l'isolamento in cui si trovano Ghilad Shalit, nelle mani di Hamas, e Golwasser e Reghev, nelle mani di Hezbollah, a ormai due anni dal loro allontanamento forzato da casa.

ROMA - "Donne valorose, esempio per i giovani di straordinaria abnegazione e professionalità": è il ritratto fatto dal Capo dello stato, Giorgio Napolitano, delle Crocerossine la cui fondazione, avvenuta cento anni fa, è stata ricordata in una cerimonia a Piazza del Popolo, a Roma.

Oltre un centinaio le crocerossine schierate, in piazza, nella tradizionale uniforme. Presenti oltre al Presidente Napolitano, il presidente della Camera Gianfranco Fini, i ministri Ignazio La Russa e Roberto Maroni, il capo della polizia Antonio Manganelli, il presidente della Cri, Massimo Barra, e l'ispettrice nazionale del corpo delle infermiere volontarie, Mila Braghetti Peretti. Durante la cerimonia, durata circa un'ora, è stata consegnata l medaglia d'oro al merito civile alla bandiera del corpo delle crocerossine.

Sono "donne valorose - ha detto il Capo dello stato - di diversa formazione ed estrazione sociale, ma tutte uguali nella loro bianca uniforme, tutte animate dagli stessi valori morali, tutte pronte al sacrificio personale per onorare gli ideali di altruismo e solidarietà che ne ispirano l'opera. Donne che cercano la propria ricompensa nella coscienza del servizio reso. Costituiscono per le giovani generazioni esempio di straordinaria abnegazione e professionalità. Esse assolvono a questo loro compito meritando al nostro Paese l'apprezzamento e la riconoscenza delle popolazioni interessate che spesso, nel sorriso delle 'sorelle', vedono riaccendersi la speranza di un ritorno alla normalità e l'auspicio di un futuro piùfelice". Le crocerossine, ausiliari delle forze armate, rappresentano, per il ministro La Russa, "oggi più che mai, un punto di riferimento sicuro al quale i cittadini guardano con fiducia e gratitudine".

Nei loro confronti va "una profonda riconoscenza" per "l'importantissimo contributo di valori e di opere concrete che il Corpo fornisce all'istituzione militare e sono orgogliose e onorate di agire fianco a fianco alle infermiere volontarie". Un "grazie" per l'impegno quotidiano profuso in situazioni di guerra e di pace è stato rivolto anche dal numero uno della Cri, Massimo Barra. Brachetti Peretti ha ricordato le infermiere cadute che sono per le 'Sorelle' "un luminoso esempio di dedizione che le guida giorno per giorno". Un augurio per il compleanno e all'"insostituibile ruolo" delle crocerossine anche da Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia la cui nonna Maria José è stata durante la guerra a capo di questo corpo della Croce Rossa Italiana.

Unica certezza? Ma la famiglia, ovviamente. O forse no? Anche quella, non è esente da errori e fraintendimenti. Nasce intorno all'unione di due individui, frutto ciascuno di altrettante unioni, famiglie più o meno allargate, due insiemi di esperienze e due bagagli culturali che più o meno vanno d'accordo, spesso ma non sempre. Queste due persone creano il loro nucleo in cui nessuno, figli, genitori, fratelli ecc. potrà mai avere accesso. E così come la famiglia si unisce e appare compatta dall'esterno in caso di problemi o difficoltà, la stessa cosa succede al nostro nucleo all'interno della "grande" famiglia. E' un mondo a sè, con regole e gerarchie, ha assegnato ruoli e doveri. Ma a noi, che lo guardiamo dall'esterno, tutto può sembrare perfetto ed idilliaco. Chi nella famiglia si assume un ruolo, e chi l'altro... ma pochi lo scelgono davvero. A pensarci bene, nella famiglia non abbiamo il diritto di scegliere: così come non possiamo stabilire un rapporto con i nostri genitori, ma sono loro che lo creano con noi quando ancora siamo troppo piccoli per poter capire alcunché, ci troviamo (alcuni si, altri no) con accanto dei fratelli e sorelle, compagni - che non abbiamo scelto - più o meno svegli o fortunati di noi in questa avventura, e tutti seguiamo la strada innanzi a noi per inerzia. Certo, ogni tanto qualcuno si ribella, un altro sbaglia, ma la maggior parte siamo sempre lì, su quel sentiero tracciato per noi. E continuiamo a percorrerlo senza mai domandarci perché!

Delle volte può accadere che possiamo davvero scegliere un rapporto, una persona. E ogni volta speriamo che la scelta sia la scelta giusta, pescata dalla Fortuna ad occhi bendati dalla marea delle scelte possibili. Non sto parlando del nostro compagno di vita, del nostro "partner di nucleo". La scelta può cadere anche su una persona che, come nessun'altra, ci capisce, ci sostiene. Un amico, o un'amica, con cui costruire quel rapporto speciale che resterà estraneo ad ogni altro individuo, ma che ci arricchisce e ci completa. Ecco sì, la verità è che ogni rapporto di questo tipo deve essere sincero, ma soprattutto deve essere incondizionato, cioè senza obblighi e costrizioni di alcun genere. La cosa bella? Beh ovviamente, che possiamo scegliere chiunque, no?

Here's some statistics:

• Michiganders return 97% of pop/beer bottles/cans.
• Michiganders recycle only 20% of other bottles.

Executive Director of MUCC Dennis Muchmore told the Detroit Free Press, "Bottled water and sports drinks weren't around when voters approved Michigan's deposit law in 1976 [which MUCC pushed strongly for].  It's time for Michigan to step back to the plate."  His goal is to get the legislation passed before the legislature breaks for the Independence Day holiday.

But passing the law may not come as easily as Muchmore wants.  Ed Deeb, president of the Michigan Food and Beverage Association said, "We won't stand for it.  We've had enough of the bottle deposit law.  Grocery stores should not be rubbish collectors or recycling centers."

Linda Grobler, the president of the Michigan Grocers Association, argues that many people bring back filthy bottles which then have to be cleaned, and that some people illegally bring in out of state recyclables to get the deposit money.  Well, I know that the latter is not true.  My family takes vacations out of state every year, and every once in a while, we'll accidentally bring a bottle or can back to Michigan that we bought in another state, not remembering it was from out of state, and when we take it back, the machine won't accept it.  Mrs. Grobler, I don't buy your lie, so find a new argument.

But Grobler and Deeb could have their way if the bill is amended.  Instead of going for conservationism, legislators may weaken the current bill.  Muchmore hopes to keep this from happening, saying, "If it's going to be amended, we're going to defend it, and even take an offensive posture [by adding water, juice, and tea bottles to the bill]."

So, who stands where?  A MUCC poll shows that 75% of Michiganders support it, but Andy Such, a lobbyist for the Michigan Bottled Water Council, said "Our concern is for the retailers," but he doesn't know how hard they'll fight an amendment to the bill.

If the amendment doesn't pass the legislature, where it would need 3/4 approval in both chambers, a ballot initiative could appear on a future ballot.  James Clift, policy director of the Michigan Environmental Council, told the Free Press, "I think it would pass easily."

MUCC LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO EXPAND STATE'S BOTTLE BILL

LANSING—The Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) today announced a major initiative to expand the state's 32-year-old Bottle Bill to include water and other non-carbonated beverage containers.

The 50,000-member, non-profit MUCC seeks to duplicate the 1976 grassroots campaign that made Michigan the national poster child for recycling beer and soda pop containers. Eleven other states have current or pending legislation for container-deposit recycling, and a growing number include bottled water. Last week, for example, New York's General Assembly voted to add non-carbonated containers to its required deposit list.

"It's time for Michigan to step back to the plate," said Dennis Muchmore, MUCC Executive Director. "Although our citizens now return 97 percent of the 5 and a half- billion bottles and cans for which they pay a deposit, they recycle only 20 percent of the bottled water containers because no deposit is required. Eighty percent of those empty containers end up in landfills or critical wildlife habitats. It's a terrible waste."

According to the Container Recycling Institute (CRI), in 2005 each Michigan resident bought an average of 338 bottles and cans of soda pop and 138 containers of water and other non-carbonated beverages. More than 1.1 billion of the latter were thrown away instead of being recycled.

National trend data from the CRI shows that within a few years, sales of non-carbonated drinks will exceed pop sales.

"We can, and must, do better," Muchmore added. "Adding a ten-cent deposit to bottled water creates a win-win situation for everyone."

How so? Recycling the containers reduces litter and saves money and energy while increasing the number of Michigan jobs. The annual energy savings alone for bottles and cans of pop and beer is equivalent to 450,000 barrels of oil, enough to fuel 150,000 cars for a month. There are economic advantages as well. According to the Michigan Recycling Coalition, annual sales of recycled commodities are nearly $2 billion. The industry employs more than 5,000 people who earn $137 million each year.

MUCC believes Michigan citizens are proud of their Bottle Bill and are ready to expand it. A 2003 survey revealed that 64 percent supported a deposit on water and other non-carbonated containers. Only 16 percent opposed expansion, and 19 percent were not sure.

"Voters" are even more supportive with 76 percent favoring the concept. Given such positive feedback, from Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike, why isn't Michigan's Bottle Bill all-inclusive now?

Muchmore says more than political will is involved. "Timing is everything," he said, "and because legislation to change the current law is suddenly pending, it makes sense to include bottled water in any new bill heading to the Governor's desk for signature."

Bills introduced in both the state house and senate seek to reduce the amount of fraudulent returns to merchants. MUCC supports the proposed changes, which were initiated by a coalition of the Michigan Beer & Wine Association, the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, and the Michigan Grocers Association. But the state's largest conservation organization of hunters and anglers wants to take a bigger step forward.

"We simply want to amend the pending legislation to include bottled water and other non-carbonated containers," Muchmore explained. "Right now Michigan can reduce fraudulent deposit returns, increase recycling, supplement the economy with new jobs, and reduce litter in our lakes, streams and other critical wildlife habitats."

Reducing the amount of litter has long been an important issue for Michigan taxpayers, who pay $5.5 million per year to clean up water bottles and other trash from the state's roadways. The current Bottle Bill has shown that when containers carry a deposit, people pick them up for free.

"That's why we're asking Michigan citizens to contact their state senator and representative to make these changes now," Muchmore said. "We only have two weeks."

The legislation comes to a vote in late June. Changing the existing Bottle Bill requires a 75 percent super-majority in each chamber (29 of 38 senate votes, 83 of 110 house votes).

Muchmore said bottled water, sport drinks and other popular beverages weren't around in 1976. "They're here now and more are being consumed every year," he said. "Michigan citizens have an opportunity to do what's right, and time is of the essence."

So, what do I think?

I like the idea, and here's why:

1. We need to recycle more.
   1. It's just good for the environment, and although I'm not a "tree hugger," being green sometimes doesn't hurt.
   2. We're running out of landfill space here in Wayne County.  We're bringing in too much trash from Canada (including our current Governor) and throwing too much away.  If we could recycle more, it'd be cheaper for cities in the long run.
2. My parents let me have the deposit money if I take the cans back, and like any good Republican/Libertarian, I like my money (or other people's money in my pockets [only if it's there legally of course]).  People give out free water bottles all the time - it's an opportunity for me to make some more money.  It's a purely selfish reason, but if it came up as an initiative, I'd sign the petition and vote for it.

I don't know if this proposed amendment would apply to cans of juice (such as lemonade), which for the most part do not have deposits on them now (I know that Kroger's lemonade cans do, but most don't).

Alright - I'd like to hear your comments.  I only have one rule.  This is a Michigan blog, so I don't want to hear the use of "soda" or "soda pop" - the proper term is just "pop."  I'm a stubborn Michigander, I know.
