Had some weirdness on my computer yesterday.

It actually started off the night before when I tried to upload a folder onto my web server and found that it was going to take over 1 day to upload. I left it going over night and was fine by the morning, but then my computer was doing weird stuff all day.

Internet speed was all over the place, then I started finding pages when I had been to in the morning, where no longer loading or working.

I ran virus and spyware scans, but found nothing, rebooted several times all to no avail

The clincher though was when my sound suddenly stopped working and all sound controls disappeared. even after a reboot!

It was at this point that I decided a restore was the quickest way to resolve whatever this problem was. So I dived into the system restore option and restored from a checkpoint from last week.

Everything seems happy again now, but it was very strange. I'm left wondering how well these virus and spyware products really work. Was this a virus or rootkit, or spyware that managed to evade several different product scans?

I did this GP essay during my JC2 Mid Years on 23 May 2008 and I got 35/50 for it. I am so proud of it that I am posting this up here!

Added (18/7): It turns out I have submit a type-written version of this essay for my school's GP bulletin. So this partly justifies my time in duplicating this essay in cyberspace.

Topic was: Cyberspace is the most natural medium for developing and monitoring political power. Comment.

Note: There are slight mistakes in my essay. The Tibetan Youth Organisation I was referring to in the essay is actually the Tibetan Youth Congress. The ThinkCentre website is hosted in Singapore instead of the US as I have claimed. Luckily the marker did not detect the mistakes.

I also edited some arguments and rephrased some examples. Otherwise, the soft copy here is an almost verbatim version of the original. A scanned copy of the original if available at the bottom of this post if you desire to view it and the marker's comments.

Word count: About 1100 words.

START:

Ever since the power of the Internet was placed into the hands of the masses in 1993 by the release of the Mosiac web browser, the information contained in this virtual medium and the influence it garners has grown from strength. From developed to developing countries, the ordinary citizen now has access to thousands of opinions of others plus the opportunity to voice out their own if they so desire. With rapid technological advances, the virtual world of cyberspace as encapsulated by the Internet has given people the option of anonymity and an avenue of free speech. These benefits are usually not available to the conventional mediums like the newspaper and television. With such advantages and lack of government control, its no wonder politics has been added to the mix of topics to be discussed online.

The young are usually the most technically sophisticated group as compared to other sectors of a country's demography. And their numbers are not small, with high birth rates in some countries like the US and Malaysia. This huge segment can exert a huge influence on politics that politicians today are just beginning to realise. The emphasis on higher education and computer literacy in most education systems has partly contributed to this phenomenon. As they are a group imbued with critical-thinking skills and a natural desire to support anti-establishment causes, they view the Internet as a convenient and affordable medium to air their views and disgruntlement with current government policies. Youth organisations have utilised the means of cyberspace to reach out to this specific group to further their cause. Many such groups existent today such as the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) heavily rely on cyberspace to plan their activities and share information.

Cyberspace allows their work to be done covertly away from the prying eyes of the government. A case in point was when the Chinese government sent its troops into Tibet to quell massive protests just last month. Barring foreign journalists, the state-owned media claimed that the death toll was only in the double-digits. Members of the TYC who were present there submitted their own set of three-figure statistics to their foreign supporters and the Western media through cyberspace. Although the data was not independently verified, this resulted in an international uproar and even calls for a boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Chinese government backed down soon after by allowing limited access to foreign journalists. This clearly shows how a small political group can weld the power of cyberspace to maintain a form of check and balance on a more superior political power. If the TYC had done its recruitment and planning through television and the newspapers, it would have never gotten pass the state censors.

Cyberspace is increasingly used by aspiring politicians to develop their own political base and as a means to reach out to millions of voters. With faster Internet access today and the proliferation of Web 2.0/Ajax technologies, political videos of debates and speeches can now be uploaded to video-sharing sites like Youtube for mass viewing. Blogs can provide instant news streams of a candidate's intentions and their own biodata. Such a power has recently been used by none other than the 2008 US presidential candidate Barack Obama. As a first-term senator of Illinois, he has lesser experience, influence and initial funding compared to other candidates. With a disadvantageous base to start of with but a desire to be in the presidency, cyberspace is the most natural medium for him to develop his own political power. Its cheaper for him to showcase himself in cyberspace than say, pay for television advertisements given his limited initial funding. His speeches like the recent "A More Perfect Union" and ridicule of opponents are available for viewing anytime. His supporters too monitor the blogs of others to find ways to detect flaws in his opponents' arguments. His method of campaigning has now made him the most likely Democratic candidate for the 2008 presidential election. (Note: Obama as of 18 July 2008, is the sole Democratic presidential candidate.) As the US Ambassador to Singapore, Patricia Herbold said in a local education seminar, "The candidate that eventually wins the 2008 US presidential elections is most probably the one that can combine the tactics of cyber campaigning and the traditional methods of public speeches." Cyberspace, with its new found opportunities and low-cost of adoption, seems to be the most natural way forward to develop political power in this day and age.

Given such benefits associated with cyberspace, it is no doubt that some incumbent political powers seek to control this medium to limit its impact on their own political influence. China and Myanmar have taken steps to limit access to political blogs and websites. With its "Great Chinese Firewall" programme, an army of computer specialists regularly sift through forums and blogs to decide which to censor. Here lies the dilemma, by restricting access, governments also realise that they are curtailing the political maturity and awareness of the population. (Marker's comment: Might that be a desirable outcome for them?) More technologically-savvy users also circumvent these restrictions by using proxy servers or satellite Internet Service Providers to access banned political websites. More affluent web owners also choose to host their websites overseas to avoid local censorship. The "ThinkCentre" website which showcases the political flaws in the Singapore government is hosted in the US to avoid registration in compliance with local laws. With cyberspace being the last bastion for free speech, Burmese have recently begun to pool many Internet connections together to maximise limited connection bandwidths to upload news and events to international viewers in the hope of monitoring their military government. Despite measures taken by the government around the world to control cyberspace, the fact that the masses continue to embrace it as a trusted media source shows its pervasiveness into today's society and the high level it holds in the eyes of the people.

In conclusion, the benefits and influence linked to cyberspace are more numerous and influential than any other forms of mediums invented in human history. The ease of accessibility of cyberspace coupled with a generation of technologically-savvy opinionated youths to boot, have continuously pushed the boundaries of how cyberspace can be used. The political influence it can potentially exert can easily prop up or undermine any political power in place. The system of checks and balances it imposes through comments submitted by the individual end-users can be amplified. Such power and influence of cyberspace easily makes it the most suitable medium one would utilise to further their own cause. No matter how much one seeks to control it, the rising tide of this new medium cannot be stopped in the 21st century.

END

So here are the scanned copies. Original handwritten copies somehow gives an authentic feel to the hard work I put in. That is provided you can read my handwriting!

Marker's comments: Excellent job, wide ranging and with good substantiation. Broad scope and good analysis.

The following are key Barack Obama positions cut and pasted from the Obama '08 web site.

National Missile Defense: An Obama administration will support missile defense, but ensure that it is developed in a way that is pragmatic and cost-effective; and, most importantly, does not divert resources from other national security priorities until we are positive the technology will protect the American public.

Ensure Freedom of Space: An Obama administration will restore American leadership on space issues, seeking a worldwide ban on weapons that interfere with military and commercial satellites. He will thoroughly assess possible threats to U.S. space assets and the best options, military and diplomatic, for countering them, establishing contingency plans to ensure that U.S. forces can maintain or duplicate access to information from space assets and accelerating programs to harden U.S. satellites against attack.

Protect the U.S in Cyberspace: An Obama administration will work in cooperation with our allies and the private sector to identify and protect against emerging cyber-threats.

Now that you have read his current positions, which I took from his campaign web site , read his positions as set forth in my posting of March 4, 2008 called "What does Senator Obama stand for in matters of defense?". For you doubters, in it you will also find a "YouTube" video where he personally espouses his positions in matters of defense, which are contrary to his web site. Or go directly to the YouTube video by clicking here. Regardless of your political leaning, you will see a scary disparity between his current campaign web site positions and his verbally stated positions - which positions can we believe?

Cyber space is probably the most important defense arena we are in. The Chinese Government has demonstrated the ability to shoot down an orbiting satellite - their own. It easily could have been one of ours. The ability to shoot down incoming missiles, orbiting satellites, and just launched missiles is crucial to our national security. We cannot depend on diplomacy to prevent the establishment of cyberspace weapons systems. Terrorists and terrorist nations (Iran) do not adhere to treaties. Nations supposedly held back by treaty often disregard the treaty, e.g., Germany, after World War I disregarded treaties and developed weapons with which to start World War II. Using diplomacy to protect this nation is downright naive and places this nation at risk.

It's interesting when looking back through Apple Computers history (thanks to macmothership.com), that they have pretty much always gone with the idea of the "all in one" computer. That being everything (including the screen) in one box.

Their very first computers had separate screens, but then came the Lisa in 1983, which had everything built into the monitor box. And Apple have stuck with that idea ever since.

It's one of the things I really like about Apple computers, I like the idea of a clean all in one box. It reduces the space required, reduces that horrible clutter of cables, it's all much cleaner and tidier and now with the flat screens, it means the computers take up much less space.

Steve jobs once compared a standard PC (box, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, power cables) with (I think it was) an iMac (Monitor,keyboard,mouse,1 power cable). he claimed PC's are ugly and messy.. and he was right.

Found this cutaway picture of the Apple Macintosh at macmothership.com.

Who needs a website anyway?

Ask any marketing person today and they will say if you're in business, you need a website. Why? First, all of your competitors have one. If for no other reason than to be on the same level as them, you need one.

So, all you need to is plant your virtual flag into the cyberground, toss up a page with your name on it, and you're done...right?

Sure! Do the bare minimum. Expect the bare minimum. Want more? Do more!

Today, busy professionals use every tool at their disposal to find out which companies are worth doing business with. Who are the cream of the crop? Who is worth their time? One of the most accessible tools today is the Internet. Look up their website. How's it look. In a brief period of time, can you get an excellent sense of who they are, what they do, and exactly what they can do for you? If not, try Googling someone else.

Let's say you've put together a nice website. The content is clear to understand. You've got pretty pictures. Now what?

Have you asked your website what else it can do for you?

Let's say your website has a well written paragraph on your front page. Do your visitors want to read it? Or would it be better to have a video where your CEO can invite people into the site to explore and interact? Is your navigation consistent and intuitive? What else can your website do for you?

Time to visit your website and look at it critically. Maybe it's time to visit your competitor's websites as well. What are they doing that's different and memorable? Are they gaining a leg up on your company through superior web branding? Do the websites have returnability because there's frequently updated worthwhile information?

What do you perceive as goals for your website? What have you accomplished through a web presence that perhaps your office/store location haven't been able to do on its own?

July 12, 2028 — A virtual suicide bomber blew up a café on the Preferred Life city of Frazonia this morning, pixelizing more than 30 avatars into oblivion.

[caption id="attachment_88" align="alignright" width="94" caption="Kirkazon"][/caption]

The terrorist group Cyberzolla claimed responsibility for the blast, the latest in a series of virtual world attacks aimed at protesting the rule of Kirkazon, the most powerful man in the universe on Preferred Life.

About 85 avatars were gathering at the café when the bomber logged on at 10:30 a.m. ET and immediately activated the computerized bomb. In addition to the 30 avatars who were lost, another 25 will have to be reformatted, the Kirkazon administration said.

The explosion had reverberations in the physical world as well. Many Preferred Life users said that in addition to their avatars being killed, the electrical charges from the blast fried their TV walls where they had entered the virtual world and damaged other electronic equipment .

President George Prescott Bush pointed to the attack as justification for further security crackdowns in cyberspace. Bush said U.S. military and intelligence operator Halliburton should have complete freedom to monitor communications between avatars. In fact, avatars moving from one virtual spot to another will have to go through heavy security checkpoints, Bush said.

In an online statement, Kirkazon denounced the attack and said he would rally his Powa-Men to hunt down every last Cyberzolla cell and bring the groups loyalists to justice. Kirkazon’s army has invaded the virtual mountainous nation of Bumpistan to hunt down Cyberzolla leader Alarma Bell-Sounden.

"Do I leave my PC running 24/7 or switch it off?"

There are compelling arguments for both sides. Arguments that talk about temperature stress from the large temperature changes between power off and power on. Rebuttals which discuss wear of fan and Hard drive bearings from constant running and use.

Then we have the greenies who worry about the power consumptions impact on their carbon fart footprint. While others are more concerned about the excruciating wait for windows to load. Even if they use the standby function the PC is still using a small amount of power to hold the computers memory.

Well I've found a pretty much perfect solution to all of the above problems. And it's available from Windows XP upwards.

It's called Hibernation. It works on the same idea as Standby, except instead of holding your computers current state (what programs you have open etc) in memory. It writes that information into a file on your Harddrive and then powers off your computer. Then when you switch it back on, it reads the file and brings your computer back to life exactly where it was when you switched off. It takes about 1 minute for your copmuter to resume from where it left off.

It means you don't have to wait for windows to load and then co through and start up the applications you had open last night, or when ever. Everything comes back as it was when you put the PC into hibernation and becasue the computer powers right off your saving on power as wear and tear on the internal hardware.

The only thing this doesn't help is the possible temperature stress. But if you only switch off at night, or when your going to be away from the computer for several hours, this will be reduced to a minimum and in all honesty in the 20 years I've been working in IT and PC support I can't recall ever seeing anythign casued by temperature stress.

I had another interesting conversation today about someone who constantly lies and then gets angry and defensive when he's caught. He moves the blame onto whoever he can, never ever dealing with that he lied in the first place. Its always someone else out there to do him in. How interesting and yet pathetic and sad

On Joy's blog the other day, there was a conversation about lies people tell on the internet. It's something I know all too well as I ran a chat room for many many years. I have seen and heard it all believe you me!! I saw the best and the worst of the worst out there.

Men pose as women on the internet so that they can get cybersex. Weird, I know. But it happens. People lie about all kinds of things that don't even really make a difference. Yet they feel the need to lie about them. For some it is about age and looks. They send really old pictures of themselves out and say that this is what they look like today. They never imagine that they will meet the person on the other side of the computer so what is the harm? The problem is that people get hurt by these lies.

I wonder what the motivations are for such lies. Are they so insecure about themselves that they need to lie to make themselves worthy of love or attention? Do they feel themselves so uninteresting and unattractive that they can't show their true selves?

I can sort of understand people telling lies in chat rooms. Making it a fantasy world where they can be whoever they want. That is one thing. But getting "involved" with other people when doing that is a total no no.

Lies create more lies. You have to keep them all straight as to who you told what to. You get tangled and caught up so much in them that you forget what the truth was in the first place. To me, its just not worth the stress and aggravation and work that causes. Id much rather be a straight shooter from the word go so I don't have anything to worry about later.

Yes, we all tell white lies and fibs to those we love in order to spare their feelings. The answer to "Does this make my ass look big?" should normally be NO! That is unless you have the right kind of relationship that you can tell the person without braking their souls and feelings. There are always times where one needs to make up a white lie or partial truth to excuse yourself from situations or conflict.

But really how much could you possibly gain in lying? Do you think that you won't be found out? It always catches up with you in the end. The results too are never pretty...

Analysis: U.S. military to patrol Internet
By SHAUN WATERMAN
UPI Homeland and National Security Editor
Published: June 30, 2008 at 11:50 AM
The U.S. military is looking for a contractor to patrol cyberspace, watching for warning signs of forthcoming terrorist attacks or other hostile activity on the Web. "If someone wants to blow us up, we want to know about it," Robert Hembrook, the deputy intelligence chief of the U.S. Army's Fifth Signal Command in Mannheim, Germany, told United Press International. In a solicitation posted on the Web last week, the command said it was looking for a contractor to provide "Internet awareness services" to support "force protection" -- the term of art for the security of U.S. military installations and personnel. "The purpose of the services will be to identify and assess stated and implied threat, antipathy, unrest and other contextual data relating to selected Internet domains," says the solicitation. Hembrook was tight-lipped about the proposal. "The more we talk about it, the less effective it will be," he said. "If we didn't have to put it out in public (to make the contract award), we wouldn't have." He would not comment on the kinds of Internet sites the contractor would be directed to look at but acknowledged it would "not (be) far off" to assume violent Islamic extremists would be at the top of the list. The solicitation says the successful contractor will "analyze various Web pages, chat rooms, blogs and other Internet domains to aggregate and assess data of interest," adding, "The contractor will prioritize foreign-language domains that relate to specific areas of concern … (and) will also identify new Internet domains" that might relate to "specific local requirements" of the command. Officials were keen to stress the contract covered only information that could be found by anyone with a computer and Internet connection. "We're not interested in being Big Brother," said LeAnne MacAllister, chief spokeswoman for the command, which runs communications in Europe for the U.S. Army and the military's joint commands there. "I would not characterize it as monitoring," added Hembrook. "This is a research tool gathering information that is already in the public domain." Experts say Islamic extremist groups like al-Qaida use the Web for propaganda and fundraising purposes. Although the extent to which it is employed in operational planning is less clear, most agree that important information about targeting and tactics can be gleaned from extremists' public pronouncements. Hembrook said the main purpose of the contract is to analyze "trends in information." The contractor will "help us find those needles in that haystack of information." The solicitor says the contractor's team will include a "principal cyber investigator," a "locally specialized threat analyst" and a "foreign-speaking analyst with cyber investigative skills," as well as a 24/7 watch team. The contractor will produce weekly written reports, containing "raw data and supporting analysis." The addresses of the Web page sources will be "captioned under alias to preserve access," says the solicitation. Experts have noted in the past that publishing the addresses of some extremists' sites has led to them being attacked or moving. However, the contractor will "consider releasing specific (Web page addresses) on an as-needed basis … if explicit threat materials or imminent threat to personnel or facilities are discovered." The contractor also will notify the command immediately "upon receipt of any and all stated or implied threats that contain timing and/or targeting information relating to personnel, facilities or activities, and to specifically designated areas of concern." While declining to comment on the specific solicitation, Ben Venzke, CEO of IntelCenter, an Alexandria, Va.-based company that monitors Islamic extremist propaganda for clients including U.S. government agencies, said it was "common" for the military or other agencies to employ contractors "to support their own work on these issues." "What most people don't get," he said, "is that (each agency or entity) has their own very specific requirements. … They are looking for one type of thing in particular." Venzke explained that while an analyst for a big-city police department might be looking at extremist Web sites for certain kinds of information, their requirements would be different from those of intelligence analysts looking for evidence of trends in extremist targeting or ideology, which in turn would be different from those concerned -- like the Fifth Signal Command -- with force protection. "There is some overlap," he said, "and you always have to work to minimize that, but generally, there are so many different … pieces you can look at … it's not duplication."

Hey all!

I'm going to be showing some data visualizations at the My Space on 7th art show in Washington, DC starting Friday, July 11 at the Touchstone Gallery! Everyone should come out. I took a look at the space and there's some interesting work hanging already. (And I have to thank Paige, here, who unintentionally helped me decide what to show...but more on that in a later post.)

Oh. And there will be wine tasting opening night. :)

There will be three old, but reworked images and one new one created just for this show. Only one has ever been printed before and they all look pretty fantastic.

The new one consists of two superimposed graphs (a paraplot and a scatterplot) of illegitimate traffic going to/from "jackwhitsitt.com" (that would be, uh, most of it).

Gospel truth, I swear on me dead Granny's grave, someone really did a search on that. It's so wrong, on so many levels, that I may never sleep soundly again for knowing s/he is still at large.

How we think about ourselves effects how we interact with the world around us. We can easily accept that there is a link between how we feel and how we behave. Now, for those of us opting to enter virtual worlds, there is a new dimension of self-perception available for exploration, our avatar.

How do we perceive ourselves when we use an avatar? Our symbolic self-representation can carry out actions, and conversations, whilst being simultaneously observed by ourselves. We do not see a mirror reflection of our physical self we see instead an idea of ourselves. This visual idea of self is strangely powerful even though we do not quite understand it. What we see, and how it makes us feel, is of huge interest to bloggers and researchers alike.

Take a look at The Center for Connected Health site which reports on research examining the dynamics of avatars, and the ensuing impact they have upon our self–perception and physical world behavior. Connected Health links to a Time Magazine report that covers a number of intriguing studies carried out by Stanford University researchers and quotes Jeremy Bailenson (of Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab) who says "When we cloak ourselves in avatars, it subtly alters the manner in which we behave,"

Connected Health also links to a Boston.com report on neurologist, Dr. Daniel Hoch who is researching the effects of teaching the Relaxation Response in Second Life. As he observes, ”There are an awful lot of people creating their own meditation spaces". This is true! There are many, many virtual cushions with meditation scripts embedded in them waiting to trip up un-mindful avis! All these cushions point to people seeking inner peace, even if only on the level of watching their avatar help land aircraft while seated in the lotus position.

These studies examine how our avatar’s appearance and actions affect us later when we are ‘off-line’. It is intriguing to read in the Time magazine article that people who observed their 'look-a-like' avatars exercising on tread mills in Second Life, were more likely to exercise later in their physical life compared to those who just observed their avatars lounging around.

I am now sending my avatar off to exercise in Second Life to encourage me in my first life. I wonder about the effect of wishful thinking here? When I was at school I tried sleeping with my French verbs under my pillow in the hope I would wake up knowing them. (Sadly, it did not work! I suspect a lot of English school children have tried this approach, perhaps this explains why the English are so bad at foreign languages?) Still, it is worth considering the subtle levels of how our avatars affect our self-perception. At the very least this puts a whole new spin on the saying ‘fake it till you make it!’ Maybe it should be 'Rez it, watch it, do it?'

Today I got my (template) certificate for the Firefox download record. They set a Guinness World Record with it ... which is not really a surprise, considering that they are the first to enter for it.

The day after the record, it hit all the news reporting / aggregating services. Obviously there were some reported problems; I thought this little bit was particularly funny. In case you're not familiar with the innuendo, it refers to a bit called Dance Monkey Boy - the whole thing, if you can find it, is around 20 minutes of Steve Balmer dancing around on a stage at a MS-con rallying the troops.

Have to say, FF3 does seem much faster, although I am running it on a new computer, so that might have something to do with it. Dropped Google Browser Sync (not supported on FF3 anyway) for Foxmarks - mucho happy with it so far! What can I say: get 'em both while they're hot!
