Davis Guggenheim, the director and one of the producers of The Inconvenient Truth, just screened his new documentary, It Might Get Loud, at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Rather than focusing on an artist, this is a music documentary that focuses on an instrument, the electric guitar. A trio of musicians tell their stories: guitar legends Jimmy Page and The Edge get to step out of the shadow of their larger-than-life frontmen and take centre stage, together with Jack White (who is also the larger-than-life frontman, of course, and he's still a legend-in-progress at this point). All three talk about coming to the instrument, as well as about the art and craft of songwriting and playing. I imagine that this film was, or soon will be, picked up for distribution - I certainly plan on keeping an eye out for it to make it to a theatre (or at least a Netflix queue) near me.

Sounds like a legendary film in the making! The forthcoming documentary film on the three guitar heroes, “It Might Get Loud,” is already generating considerable buzz among music fans and guitar players...

First screened in May at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie officially premieres this September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

According to a press release, the movie “revolves around a singular day when Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White first met and sat down together to share their stories, teach, and play.”

Led Zeppelin's Page, U2's the Edge and White, leader of the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, were chosen for their impact across three different generations - from Page's 1960s days as a session musician and a member of the Yardbirds into the Edge's unique sound developed in the '80s through White's current work.

The film - which was directed by Davis Guggenheim (who won an Academy Award for his direction of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”) - is said to “capture the guitarists as each explains and demonstrates how he changed the sound of the electric guitar to suit his own distinctive musical style.”

In one scene, as the guitarists banter with one another about their influences, Page pulls out a Link Wray album, the Edge pulls out an album by the Sex Pistols, and White pulls out an album by the Flat Duo Jets.

We wonder if besides initerviews, the film also shows rare or never-seen-before archive footage of Page, White and The Edge playing with their respective bands - that would be simply amazing...but no further info about the film content as of yet.

No word yet on whether the film will see a full-fledged theatrical release, but we eagerly await its release!

With his pool crew in tow, Barack Obama headed to the Clark Chateau Museum, a stately brick mansion

With his pool crew in tow, Barack Obama headed to the Clark Chateau Museum, a stately brick mansion on Washington Street in Butte, Montana. The candidate was to do some sort of taping, the campaign said. We were initially told the taping had something to do with the DNC Convention, but the campaign later advised pool reporters waiting outside on the press bus that the taping was a routine taping with the campaign's new media division, a group of staffers who shoot on DV cameras for the campaign's website, much as the embed producers for the networks cover presidential candidates.

After an hour and ten minutes inside, the candidate emerged and got back on his bus. Following him out of the building - crews carrying Super 16 film cameras and one Davis Guggenheim, the director of the Academy Award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.

A woman named Aleish riding on the press bus - not a regular in the traveling press corps - informed the pool that she was a makeup artist hired by Essence, and spilled that they were inside doing a documentary for the DNC. Not so said traveling press secretary Jen Psaki, who emailed this producer, "It is a new media taping and [I] don’t have anything else to add."

Poolers scratched their heads on the ride back to Obama's Butte hotel, and when we arrived, Guggenheim emerged from Obama's bus. The pool approached Mr. Guggenheim in the hotel parking lot, and the filmmaker admitted he'd interviewed Obama. Seeing cameras running and pens scribbling, he told the press he'd talk to us after he cleared it with the campaign as he wasn't sure the mystery taping was on the record. He added with a laugh that he was traveling with his young son, who stood by his side.

Perhaps realizing Guggenheim and his crew then boarded the press bus to a hotel around the corner, Psaki sent the pool another email reading, "Was a new media taping for the dnc. I am sorry we were not more specific. We don't have additional details to share at this time."

An Inconvenient Truth is an American Academy Award-winning documentary film about global warming, presented by former United States Vice President Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim. The film premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and opened in New York and Los Angeles on May 24, 2006.

The film's thesis is that global warming is real, potentially catastrophic, and human-caused. Gore presents specific data that supports the thesis, including:

    * The Keeling curve, measuring CO2 from the Mauna Loa Observatory.
* The retreat of numerous glaciers is shown in before-and-after photographs.
* A study by researchers at the Physics Institute at the University of Bern and the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica presenting data from Antarctic ice cores showing carbon dioxide concentrations higher than at any time during the past 650,000 years.
* Temperature record since 1880 showing that the ten hottest years ever measured in this atmospheric record have all occurred in the last fourteen years.
* A 2004 survey by Naomi Oreskes of 928 peer-reviewed scientific articles on global climate change published between 1993 and 2003. The survey, published as an editorial in the journal Science, found that every article either supported the human-caused global warming consensus or did not comment on it.

So, yes, the thinking is what counts. But what about tools?

Well, I am a cameraman along with my other duties, and as a cameraman I like a camera that responds to my efforts and gives me a product that I can use. Lately, that has been the JVC HD-100 hi-def camera. It happens to be a very popular camera right now, for good reason. It's got an amazing picture and it handles well, not like a lot of the other hi-def cameras that have crowded into the market.

And it happens that Davis Guggenheim, the director of An Inconvenient Truth, also happens to own and love this camera. You can see an interview of him talking about the convenience and utility of this camera as a documentary workhorse here.

Is it perfect? No. Is it the only camera I use? No way. But for a lot of what we do, it's a very useful tool for the arsenal.

Forse in pochi mesi.
