<title><![CDATA[Restaurant Review: Schwartz's Deli, Montreal, Quebec, Canada]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ah, Schwartz's. It's a rather famous, tiny delicatessen in downtown Montreal renowned for many things-- including being overrated. But when I ate there, I thought it was.. alright. It was the meal I had after my quasi-epic trek up and down Mont-Royal the woodsy way, thus I was prepared for some meat!</p>
<p>The ambience of the restaurant is tiny, grubby, cramped.. yet I couldn't imagine it any other way-- and I do admire the owners' refusals to commercialize the restaurant into a chain. The grubby atmosphere was actually oddly inviting. It was raining heavily the day I went, but there was still a sizable line (plus, it was dinnertime on a Saturday evening), and the wait was about twenty minutes.</p>
<p>I have to admit the wait IS worth it though. The meat was amazing, and nothing like I'd ever had before. The fries and bread were average, and I unfortunately didn't get the pickles.. but either way, the meat was.. indescribably good. I probably could have eaten it forever if I could. It's so hard to put into words that I won't even try-- one must experience it her/himself. It probably isn't the most amazing meat in the world, but it IS pretty good.</p>
<p>The service, however, was questionable. Our waiter was courteous enough, but didn't have a very welcoming attitude, and one of my party got into a small argument with him about one of the fees-- though, nicely enough, he ended up not charging us the fee that we so contested. Still, the service was only okay.</p>
<p>While I must admit that Schwartz's IS a bit overrated.. it is worth going to at least once if you're in Montreal.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hace exactamente un año, el de 1 de octubre de 2007, Irene levantaba la persiana de metal de la tienda de 'El Placer del Picante', en pleno corazón del barrio de Chamberí, una pequeña tienda delicatessen que se apoyaba en una fuerte presencia en Internet. Al mismo tiempo, se levantaban muchas ilusiones, se abrían nuevas expectativas y añadíamos una nueva experiencia a nuestras vidas, y, desde el punto de vista profesional, iniciábamos la más trepidante de las aventuras.</p>

<p>Un año después, y tras haber desmontado el negocio, no podemos más que sentirnos muy orgullosos y satisfechos del trabajo realizado, del equipo que formamos y, en particular, Irene debe sentirse tremendamente realizada al haber conocido muy de cerca la labor empresarial, desde la contratación de personal acompañada de nuestra hija de pocas semanas, hasta la dura negociación de venta del negocio.  Una ardua labor, que realizó de forma incansable y que certificó su condición de luchadora nata.</p>
<p>Aprendimos muchas cosas, pero la más importante es a valorar y admirar al empresario medio de nuestro país, que tiene que velar por los sueldos de sus empleados, por el compromiso con el cliente y a su vez no le queda más remedio que luchar contra los poderosos, observar impotente como la competencia abre 24 horas hundiendo al pequeño luchador, ver como los impuestos, seguros sociales, tasas, obligaciones varias y el plan de riesgos laborales te merman la cuenta de resultados. Sería importante ilustrar a los empleados con todo lo que hay detrás de una empresa, para que se aprenda a valorar un poco más la labor del emprendedor y, en definitiva, de la persona que te ha contratado y está pagando un sueldo neto que, en realidad, es el doble a los ojos del recaudador, es decir, en la práctica para el contratante.</p>
<p>Por otra parte, fue una grata sorpresa el constatar que en Madrid, a través de su programa de <a href="http://www.emprendelo.es">em</a><a href="http://www.emprendelo.es">prendedores</a>, puedes obtener todo el asesoramiento, ayuda, inspiración y aliento posible. También fue una alegría, y es, dar con profesionales rigurosos, comprometidos y que quisieron formar parte del proyecto desde el principio, como es el caso de Antonio y todo su equipo de <a href="http://www.dalkom.net">Dalkom</a>, empresa altamente recomendable desde el punto de vista tecnológico. Así mismo, las dos empleadas que trabajaron para nosotros demostraron que, a pesar de su poca experiencia en el sector, podían con todo, aprendieron a manejar una estructura de comercio electrónico y celebraron casi tanto como nosotros la llegada de cada pedido por Internet.</p>

Esta es atendida por un hombre aparentemente corrupto y mal humorado. Pronto llega un nuevo “cliente”, Luison (</span><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Dominique Pinon)<span>, quien resulta ser un payaso retirado buscando, pronto es contratado para hacer diversas reparaciones en el edificio. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">La historia va desarrollándose con múltiples situaciones extrañas que los peculiares inquilinos van creando dentro de su cotidianeidad, el nuevo personaje no lo nota, pero todos a su alrededor están conspirando en su contra, tal vez con la excepción de una persona, Julie (</span><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Marie-Laure Dugnac), la hija del carnicero<span>. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Son tiempos difíciles, todo está en ruinas y hay escasez de comida, por lo que se ha recurrido al canibalismo en ciertos lugares, parece que los inquilinos están librados de él, pero no hay que confiar en todo lo que dicen. Cabe mencionar que Luison no está solo, por lo menos de eso se ha encargado Julie, quien interviene como su salvadora. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><em><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Delicatesen</span></em><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">, según la opinión de algunos, viene a resucitar el cine de principios de los ’90 ya que introduce nuevas ideas. Realizada por la pareja Jean-Pierre Jeunet y Marc Caro, se ve enriquecida por elementos característicos de ambos, los personajes extraños, primeros planos, estética de cómic que ya forman parte de los trabajos de Jeunet mientras que Caro aporta una cierta ‘oscuridad’ que se puede apreciar claramente con el cuarto húmedo donde se encuentra un hombre rodeado de muchas ranas y caracoles. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Delicatessen marca una gran diferencia, es muy distinta a las películas que he visto. La forma en que combina los elementos como la iluminación, la música, los encuadres, los personajes, todo en sí es muy diferente, en sí es una historia completa, ya que tiene comedia, romance, terror, algo de suspenso, personajes extraños algunos de ellos gozan de una notable inocencia, es una película un tanto surreal, ingredientes que la hacen interesante. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">Prácticamente tiene de todo en cuanto a encuadres, Jeunet y Caro se valen de Extreme Long Shots o bien de Long Shots (cuando se ve el edificio en ruinas, la noche oscura como fondo, algunas otras ruinas rodeando a la construcción), se ven varios Full Shot (la mujer que trata de suicidarse colgándose, por ejemplo), hay varios Medium Shot (cuando Julie y Luison tocan sentados); hay varios close up, y planos a detalle. En cuanto a ángulos, la mayoría de la historia se desarrolla en Eye-level shot, low angle (cuando el carnicero va a cobrase una nueva víctima), oblique angle (el sueño de Julie).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;text-align:justify;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;" lang="ES">En ocasiones te invita a pensar si algún día llegaremos a una situación tan penosa como la que viven los habitantes de este edificio, te preguntas cómo ha sobrevivido la gente en época de guerra, cómo es que hay personas tan corruptas tan…insensibles. También te muestra que en la vida no todo es malo, ni triste, también muestra que hasta en las que parecen las peores situaciones, tienes oportunidad de alegrarte el día. En algunos momentos tomaba tintes de comedia, me encantó cuando todos se sincronizaron creando cada uno un sonido que formaba parte de una...melodía. Definitivamente considero que Jeunet hizo un gran trabajo, me llamó la atención su trabajo, volvería a verla, así como otras de sus obras. </span></p>

<description><![CDATA[I&#8217;ve been busy with Heroes Season 3 and Gossip Girls Season 2. Apart from that, I&#8217;ve bee]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I've been busy with Heroes Season 3 and Gossip Girls Season 2. Apart from that, I've been in a emotional and physical turmoil within this few weeks due to my disturbed work-out routine (fasting month + the dang YF closed for very obvious reason: debt problem. Hello? this is KK, gossip spread faster than speed of light. sigh). </p>
<p>I'm deprived to get my adrenaline pump up. Will do after raya then. heee :) In the mean time, I'm stretching and practising yoga at home. </p>
<p>Today, I have submitted my second EIA project report to the boss. Finally! weee! At least, one problem gone; 4 more to juggle. cest la vie.</p>
<p>I feel like a useless person too this month as I contribute zero effort in preparation for raya festive. Sorry to say but I'm not a very-festive person.  I don't need to have like 2-3 dozen of cookies for raya or a 3-4 pairs of raya clothes too.  Mommy been doing the preparation since forever.<br />
However, since I've started working and earning my own money, I feel guilty for not at least making an effort to help around in the house for raya. </p>
<p>So yesterday I decided to get a fruit cake for my mom.  I'm VERY fussy when it comes to fruit cake. I love the christmas fruit cake; fruity, moist and yummy.  I hate those dry fruit cake that you can easily buy from the supermarket.<br />
So i marched to Delicatessen Shop, Hyatt KK and order a 1 and half kg of fruit cake with a special request of making it more more fruity and moist! :)</p>
<p>Oh last saturday, I had dinner with Singyee and her friend, Justina (and her bf) at Toscani's Wine and Dine Cafe, Waterfront. It was fun catching up with her and knowing her friend. We end up being in the same environmental-field. Gave a few advice to J on the working life of a tree-hugger and its prospect in KK.  Overall, I had fun chatting and dining with them. We should do more often you! :)</p>

O diretor e os atores são franceses (Direção: Jean-Pierre Jeunet e Marc Caro. Com: Ron Perlman, Dominique Pinon, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Jean-Louis Trintignant) e história traz um homem incapaz de sonhar e que rapta crianças para roubar seus sonhos... até que um caçador de baleias parte em busca de seu irmão desaparecido e descobre a Cidade das Crianças Perdidas.</p>
<p>É lindo, é delirante, é emocionante. E é uma desculpa para não ficar em casa neste domingo.</p>

<p>O diretor, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, para quem ainda não caiu a ficha, é o mesmo diretor do fofo e encantador Amelie Poulain e do surreal Delicatessen.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I've increasingly been finding that I can get almost everything I want locally, without having to go to a supermarket. Now that a I see a new butcher is opening up in Pitshanger Lane, which is where I do my 'ping, I'll be able to get almost everything locally.  Below I've mapped out the main independent food shops in Pitshanger, all of which I regularly use. For heavy items and general stocking up on detergent etc I do a quarterly-ish Tesco delivery.</p>

Cool and debonair as I may seem, put a few drinks in me and I am like a drunk minstrel sure to have everyone laughing at my own expense. (Ask me about the time back in 2005 when I downed shots of Jager that led to a potato sack race on concrete to led to a trip to the ER sometime.)</p>
<p>Well, the good news is I have grown up a bit and do not drink things with words like "bomb" in them anymore. However, I am still not immune to ER visits after drinking. On one lovely Carrie Bradshaw-ish night out with the sister recently, we first went to visit <a href="http://elizabethny.com/" target="_blank">Elizabeth</a> in SoHo (lovely but overpriced and portions way too small) where afterward we stopped into the hot new <a href="http://delicatessennyc.com/" target="_blank">Delicatessen</a> in SoHo (one of my new faves we will discuss later) to forgo a teaspoon of sorbet for some smores and Ovaltine pudding parfait accompanied by not one but two bottles of vino.</p>

The night went on and Cindy Lauper rocked the house. Then morning came. I can't put my hair up, can't open a water bottle, can hardly button up pants. Time elapses, you get the picture. I now have a brace on my broken wrist for four weeks, FUCK!</p>

Or to get poisoned by boyfriend's potentially bland food.</p>
<p>So, in honor of all of my friends out their with a hook, nub, or cast (non-crips are welcome to try too, just stick one hand in your sleeve) I am culminating one-handed recipes.  Not stupid, lazy, rich housewife recipes like Sandra Lee's but real food with innovative technique.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do yourself a favor and go to <a href="http://www.delicatessennyc.com/" target="_blank">Delicatessen</a> asap. Soon and very soon it will carry the same clout as hotspots like The Spotted Pig and Momofuku. Then winter will come around, and you will be stuck outside, with a two-hour wait, shivering in the midst of European tourists or sandwiched between a cougar and an Abercrombie model by the bar. The place is <em>hot</em>, despite its clubby look with its stainless steel interior complimented by glossy whites and a warm unfinished reclaimed wood. OK, so what? It's beautiful, I admit, and the entire restaurant opens up to the outside, making for great people-watching time.</p>
<p>Delicatessen's balance stays steady from everything to the cool (but not asshole-cool) service to the whimsical yet classic menu. The cheeseburger spring rolls were perfectly crisp on the outside and succulent on the inside. Not greasy, either. The housemade ketchup provides the perfect amount of class and trash that I adore.</p>

<p>The fish tacos, served in fried wontons with shreaded Halibut with a kimchee mayonaise, was very light and airy with a touch of spice. I wish there was more of a kimchee taste, but give 'em props just for going there.</p>

I salivate as I write this knowing how good it will be my next trip. This place is open until two on weekends, one on weekdays.</p>

I indulged in the smores made with fried marshmallows and my sis had the ovaltine pudding parfait upen my insistence. Both were better than they sound, and words will not do them justice. (Sorry for no dessert pics. Quite intoxicated by then.)</p>
<p>Oh, yeah, did I mention I had the Nicoise salad? The tuna was perfectly cooked, the accompaniments were appropriate, but, you know, it's still a salad.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have been on a bit of a search for creative films. Not many come out today, so I have been looking to past films. If your interested in weird, creative or inspiring films then here are some I have come accross:</p>
<p>1. 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' - This film is major freaky. It was one of the most famous films to take on German Expressionism. It was filmed in 1920, so naturally there is music but no sound or dialogue. Anything spoken is presented as text in between clips. Very strange ideas such as painting surreal shadows into the actual set and building abstract looking props (and buildings).</p>
<p>2. '8½' by Fellini (1963) - Fellini was a famous Italian Director. He was suffering from something known as 'Directors Block', so was out of ideas. Fellini then cleverly turned his problem on its head and made a film about a director who was suffering from Directors Block. The result was a film that many film critics see as one of the finest ever made.</p>
<p>3. 'Run Lola Run' by Tom Tykwer (1998) - This 1 hour+ film only represents 20 minutues. Its German, but you'll recognize the main actress from the Bourne Identity films. Lola has 20 mins to save her boyfriend's life. I won't give any more away because it would spoil the film.</p>
<p>4. 'The Science of Sleep' (2006) - This is a film by French Director Michel Gondry. If you liked 'Be Kind Rewind' then oyu should watch more of his stuff. This film is quite good, it follows the life of a man who can't tell the difference between reality and his dreams. The main character is pretty annoying to be honest, but if your after creative ideas watch this film.</p>
<p>5. Jean-Pierre Jeunet makes awsome films. Watch these films by him:<br />
- Amélie<br />
- Delicatessen<br />
- The City of Lost Children</p>
<p>All of those films have excellent and unique style. He has also worked on American films (such as Alien: Resurrection) but I would recommend the projects he has done 'more closer to home'.</p>
<p>6. Tim Burton makes good films with freaky and unique style. Search for a list of films by him and take your pick. I personally recommend Big Fish, it has a very nice storyline.</p>
<p>7. 'Fargo' (and more recently 'No Country for Old Men') by Joel and Ethan Coen are excellent films. Very heavily storyboarded and beautiful in style.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;">Nos vamos de viaje. Subimos al coche, ponemos la radio y metemos el cd de música. Hay bastantes kilómetros por delante, yo como copiloto, estiro las piernas para ir lo más relajada posible. Hacia las 2 horas el cuerpo te pide salir del vehículo, las piernas están agarrotadas y tu estómago te pide algo de comer. Llegados a este punto, todos nos hemos encontrado en la tesitura de tener que decidir donde parar. Y aquí nos adentramos en ese microuniverso que gira en torno a la red de carreteras. Tenemos varias alternativas:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://quelujo.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/gasolinera.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-142" src="http://quelujo.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/gasolinera.jpg" alt="" width="120" height="95" /></a>Está la <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">opción rápida</span></em> que es parar en la primera estación de servicio que nos pille de paso. Allí repostaremos, iremos al WC, el cual tiene normalmente unas características peculiares, en cuanto a aromas y limpieza se refiere. Cogeremos el sándwich y las patatas fritas y nos lo tomaremos en el coche resguardándonos de un sol sofocante o de un vendaval aterrador.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Otra opción sería la de un <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">área de descanso en pleno campo</span></em> donde es obvio que no se puede repostar, implica una parada de rigor en una gasolinera y la elaboración previa de un picnic casero.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Áreas de descanso donde</span></em> <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">cadenas de restauración</span></em> nos engañan la vista con fotos de ingredientes naturales, productos frescos, la "Dieta Mediterránea", para que te adentres en su buffet buscándolos, todo es producto del marketing. Al final no los encuentras y terminas en la sección de comida rápida, comiéndote un bocadillo rápido (opción de la que querías huir).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://quelujo.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/area-de-servicio1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-146" src="http://quelujo.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/area-de-servicio1.jpg?w=95" alt="" width="95" height="96" /></a>También están los <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">bares de carretera</span></em>. Estos sirven para todo, los hay pequeños, medianos, grandes, antiguos, restaurados y nuevos, algunos tienen un auténtico imperio, con restaurante, hostal, y una tienda de la que te puedes surtir de todo tipo de embutidos, quesos y jamones, productos típicos del lugar. En algunos, hasta tienen su puestecillo ambulante donde adquirir la fruta de temporada: naranjas, melocotones y melones.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Y, ¿Quién no tiene una parada localizada de estas características?, una parada que al final la identificas como tuya, y le pones la etiqueta del destino final. No se me olvida "la parada para ir a Gandía" cuando viajaba con mis padres de niña. Era el Hostal Juanito, en La Roda, Albacete (seguro que para más de uno también familiar), era el sitio donde desayunábamos, a medio camino de casa y la playa. Todavía es un sitio emblemático, una buena parada para quien pase por allí.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Bueno, pues la semana pasada viniendo por la Autovía de Levante teníamos la necesidad de parar para echar gasolina. Así que nos salimos de la autovía en la primera desviación. Nos coincidió con la salida del Km. 175, conocida por ser la parada de la empresa de autobuses de AutoRes, que va con destino a todo el levante.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Allí tienes dos opciones o parar en el restaurante self-service junto a la gasolinera, donde paran dichos autobuses, o un Mesón-Restaurante, <strong><em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Mesón Los Rosales</span></em></strong>, que queda a la derecha. Decidimos la segunda opción, para investigar, como siempre.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Nada más entrar te encuentras con una decoración típica de un mesón, lámparas de hierro forjado negras, suelo de terrazo, mucho ladrillo visto y decoración con productos típicos de la tierra. Limpio y con una gran barra de frente. Bastante gente pero bien atendida por el servicio de camareros (contabilizamos unos 10 solamente para la barra). Una carta amplia de pinchos y de raciones, aparte de toda clase de montados y bocadillos. La bollería muy variada, entre la que hay que destacar "los Miguelitos", que para quién todavía no los conozca, es un dulce de hojaldre relleno de crema (ya ha salido la versión de chocolate). Son muy típicos de la zona (mis padres siempre los compran en una pastelería en Motilla de Palancar).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Pero esto no es todo, para ir al baño dejas a la derecha la tienda, y a modo de pasillo, numerosas cajas con vinos españoles, algunos expuestos como novedad, nada comunes. Esto ya me indicó que la tienda podía prometer.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">En el piso de abajo, una entrada a los baños rústica, bancos de madera, cuadros, jarrones con flores ornamentales, y varios aperos de labranza que daban preámbulo a la <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">bodega</span></em>, cerrada con una puerta de rejas negra y con la pared encalada haciendo de estantería. Una buena colección de vinos tintos, se podían divisar algún Pintia y Vega Sicilia, Summa Varietalis, Domino de Valdepusa, Pétalos, Belondrade y Lurton, Emina Prestigio, Mal Paso, Tres Patas, Casa Lobos, Manuel Manzaneque...</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Subí y me adentré en el espacio que tienen de <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">tienda</span></em>, como siempre, comencé por mi debilidad, los <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">vinos</span></em>. ¡Increíble!, cuentan con una amplísima gama de vinos, muy buena selección, de todo tipo de precios, variedades y tipos de elaboración. Podría rellenar un buen párrafo enumerando.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Al final compramos un vino de la zona que desconocía, <a title="Pago de Tharsys" href="http://www.pagodetharsys.com/"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Pago de Tharsys</em></span></a>, un vendimia nocturna de las variedades Albariño y Godello, un coupage curioso, teniendo en cuenta que este vino es de Requena y no de Galicia.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Una <em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">selección de Aceites de Oliva Virgen Extra</span></em> entre los que se encontraban, <a title="L'Estornell" href="http://www.vea.es/688_spanish/estornell_ecologico_web.htm"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">L'Estornell</span></a>, de agricultura ecológica, 100% Arbequina. Un aceite que me apasiona por esos recuerdos a tomatera, <a title="Marqués de Griñón &#34;Capilla del Fraile&#34;" href="http://www.capilladelfraile.com/aelaceite.htm"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Marqués de Griñón "Capilla del Fraile"</span></a>, coupage de Arbequina, Picual y Manzanilla. Una nueva adquisición para mis conocimientos, <a title="&#34;En Rama&#34; de Hacienda la Guijarrera" href="http://www.laguijarrera.com/index-es.html">"En Rama" de Hacienda la Guijarrera</a>, 100% Arbequina, de donde se han necesitado 6 Kg de aceituna para elaborar un litro. No ha sido filtrado, nada más que decantado, en definitiva, un jugo natural. <a href="http://quelujo.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/aceite-castillo-de-canena1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-140" src="http://quelujo.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/aceite-castillo-de-canena1.jpg?w=244" alt="" width="202" height="249" /></a>Y para mí el gran descubrimiento en aceites de este año lo tuve cuando estuve en Madrid Fusión, donde tuve la oportunidad de hacer la una cata de los mejores aceites existentes en España: <a title="&#34;Castillo de Canena Primer Dia de Cosecha&#34;" href="http://www.castillodecanena.com/aceite-oliva-virgen-extra-espanol/marcas-premium/primerdiacosecha.htm">"Castillo de Canena Primer Día de Cosecha"</a>,100% Picual, Edición exclusiva y limitada de la familia Vaño. Etiqueta diseñada por Enrique Ponce. En palabras de Rosa Vaño &#60;&#60;Con esta edición limitada se rinde homenaje a la magia del primer día de la recolección, cuando el agricultor constata que el aceite obtenido recompensa con su calidad el esfuerzo de todo un año&#62;&#62;.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Hay de variedad Picual y Arbequina. Yo me decanto por la Variedad Picual, &#60;&#60; de color verde intenso, tiene un frutado medio de aceituna verde y hoja, aroma fragante y bastante complejo, balsámico con toques a menta, hierbabuena y algo de cítricos. En boca de cuerpo bien estructurado y persistente, tiene un amargo y picante muy equilibrados&#62;&#62;.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>ANGELES CITY, Philippines</strong>  A few weeks ago I panned Bretto's Delicatessen for slipping in terms of quality.  Their restaurant rates a review, however.  The restaurant sits directly adjacent to the deli itself, co-located on mid-Perimeter Road in Angeles City.</p>
<p>The food makes good use of the deli's forte:  subs, burgers, and meat dishes.  You can order what Bretto's calls "submarinos" like turkey (P200), club sandwich (P235), and ham and cheese (P235).  You can also opt for what <a href="http://www.touristbob.com/aceats/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/angeles-city-brettos-cafe.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;margin:5px;" src="http://www.touristbob.com/aceats/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/angeles-city-brettos-cafe-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="angeles_city_brettos_cafe" width="244" height="164" align="right" /></a>Bretto's calls roasts on buns, like the roast beef for P240 or Roast lamb for P275.  The roasts come with fries and a small salad.  Really small salad, actually. </p>
<p>They offer the so-called biggest burger in town, and I think they are probably right about that.  A half pound "Fatburger" with pickled relish, chopped onions, and lettuce" runs P315 and if you've got a massive appetite, you can try the 1 lb version for P420.  They also serve a variety of other burgers, some with unlikely  ingredients.  They top the P315 Aussie burger with and egg and beetroot, making it overly sloppy, while the Bretto's special comes topped with cream cheese, olives, portabella mushrooms, tomato, and onion salsa, making it even sloppier to eat.  I couldn't think of an odder burger combo if I tried.</p>
<p>Then there are some simple chicken dishes, like the P240 fried chicken with fries, or the P330 chicken cordon <a href="http://www.touristbob.com/aceats/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/angeles-city-bretto-burger.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;margin:5px;" src="http://www.touristbob.com/aceats/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/angeles-city-bretto-burger-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="angeles_city_bretto_burger" width="170" height="197" align="left" /></a> bleu.  Other hot dishes include the bland baked pork chop for P225 or overly sweet pork barbeque for P235.</p>
<p>The food mostly reminds makes me think that whoever planned the menu watches FoodTV too much.  The combinations on the burgers, in particular, just don't work.  Onion salsa and cream cheese?  They just don't particularly complement each other.  What you end up getting is creamy goop.</p>
<p>The prices are high, but the portions are fairly large, with a few exceptions.  They have a few sausage selections, like a P295 pork sausage with mashed potatoes and peas that are just plain overpriced for what you get and thoroughly uninspired in their preparation.  Take sausage.  Fry. Add mashed potatoes--from a box.  Serve.  Not appetizing for $7 bucks, is it?</p>
<p>As I mentioned the restaurant lies directly adjacent to the deli and in fact you enter it through the same door.  It's a small cafe with perhaps 10 tables.  Service is unmotivated.  You'll need to flag down a waitress for whatever your needs may be.  Luckily it's a small place, so that's not difficult.  It's a nice environment to enjoy a meal.</p>
<p>While the Bretto's restaurant appears to be popular, it's not really worth the trip unless you happen to be shopping there. </p>

Comparable to Hédiard (in Paris), this store is specialized in teas and cakes. Cakes are not my cup of tea, but I really like teas, mostly green ones. And those meticulous packaging with an English granny flavor are absolutely delicious. A small walk between teas shelves gives some ideas of greedy gifts to devour with eyes first… Between two cakes: a La Prairie beauty break? Or having a drink at the wine bar… Proust's Madeleine. </span> </p>

<p>Falando em Amelie Poulan lembro que no mês que vem estaremos na europa cobrindo os principais desfiles de moda, incluindo a França.</p>
<p>Sendo assim, qual melhor assunto que esse filme?</p>
<p>Amelie Poulan é um filme francês de 2001 estrelado por <span class="texto_titulo">Audrey Tautou ( Barbara, se não souber quem é te dou uma surra!).</span> Foi dirigido por Jean Pierre Jeunet, que entre tantos, dirigiu Delicatessen (1991), Ladrão de Sonhos(1995), Alien-  A ressurreição (1997). Jeunet tem a característica de incorporar em seus personagens uma poesia que casa com a estética dos filmes. Um dia, um amigo meu disse que o filme deixa a realidade mais bonita. E Jeunet a deixa mais romântica, mais poética, lúdica. Todos seus filmes são bem desenhados, e a escolha da paleta de cores é feita com o mesmo cuidado que um estilista a escolhe para sua coleção. Amelie Poulan vai do verde para o vermelho o tempo todo, e tem uma luz quente que interage com o resto do ambiente. É lindo.</p>
<p>Em uma das cenas do filme a garçonete Amelie guia um cego pela rua, e sempre que pode vai com seus bolsos cheio de pedrinhas jogá-las no rio, o mesmo rio que jogava outras pedrinhas na sua infancia. Eu tenho várias cenas dessas na minha vida, pois acredito que todos nós trabalhamos com o lúdico em nossas escolhas.</p>
<p>Todos nós, incluindo você, tem um pouco de Amelie Poulan dentro de si.</p>

<p><font size="2">In the old cities of southern Tyrol (Italy) the historic shopping street is often called Lauben (ital.: Portici) characterized by it's typical arcades. In Merano <a href="http://www.seibstock.com/" target="_blank">Seibstock</a> found it's place in this street more than 100 years ago:</p>

<p>The gardener at <a href="http://www.trauttmansdorff.it/" target="_blank">Trautmannsdorf Castle</a>, Johann Seibstock, got permission to open a market-stand in Merano in 1890. 1904 this has been developed into a grocery, herb and coal store...</p>

<p>Until today the customer enters the store through the century aged hazelnut-wooden door. And he finds a fine delicatessen-store as well as - sometimes - personally one of the two Seibstock-Brothers in third generation of management, who explains their vision to keep this store growing both in tradition and space.</p>

<p>Recently the store was carefully renovated, italian designed light drops enlight the lardos, hams and cheeses, oils balsamici, jams and honeys, pasta and pestos.  And the sortiment is extraordinary: Pasta is added by glass noodles and couscous, Grappa by Calvados and Cognac, so one finds not just italian food.</p>

<p>The "giornalista per una gazetta tedesca 'slowretail'", this is how I have been introduced to the very serious storemanager in the store, gets to know by the owner, that the 15th century-basement will be opened to public within the next weeks. And the first floor is supposed to become a seated deli one day... we'll stay tuned!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the area about 2 hours ago, we decided to stop and eat in <a href="http://amlifestyle.wordpress.com/2008/07/18/introducing-delicatessen/" target="_blank"><strong>Delicatessen</strong></a>.</p>
<p>The space is decorated as well as can be and met all our expectations.  The bathrooms are somewhat hidden inside the downstairs walls.  Of course everybody has seen the lounge downstairs (you know, with the green couches), but there also is a <strong>private lounge</strong> w. a service bar which was very dimly lit today.</p>
<p>The staff was great, friendly and good looking...and we wouldn't expect it anyway else from the Cafeteria guys.</p>
<p>On to the food, we ordered the <strong>Halibut Tacos</strong> to start and recommend you do too! They were amazing and not fishy tasting. Then we tried their <strong>Cobb salad</strong>, which was one of the best Cobb salads we've ever had (with avocado, bacon, Gorgonzola, and chicken) as well as the <strong>Chicken Bucket</strong>.  The Chicken was fried to perfection and came with a great side of cole slaw.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:left;">In Coustellet is er van april tot november iedere zondagochtend boerenmarkt. De plaatselijke kwekers etaleren er op grote of kleine schaal de vruchten van hun arbeid. Stalletjes met uien en look, een laadbak vol meloenen, torens van plateaux de cérises, netjes gerangschikte fleurs de courgettes, ze staan allemaal te pronken en de waren vinden gemakkelijk de weg naar de rieten manden van de gretige kopers.</p>

<p>In de marge van deze populaire marché paysan zagen we met de jaren steeds meer winkeltjes en horecazaken ontstaan die een graantje willen meepikken van het succes van dit wekelijks gebeuren. De terrasjes doen het goed maar de souvenir- en andere winkeltjes is meestal geen lang leven beschoren.</p>
<p>Een goed jaar geleden zagen we een nieuwe blinkende winkel met op het uithangbord in kaligrafische letters “Délicatesses”. We versnelden onze stap om een inventaris te maken van de heerlijkheden die in onze manden zouden belanden.</p>
<p>Bij het bestuderen van de vitrine vielen onze monden open van verbazing. De pata negra hammen hingen met tientallen aan het plafond, wijnflessen met klinkende namen en prijzige kaartjes lagen torenhoog gestapeld. De flessen Bollinger stonden naast dure Iraanse kaviaar opgesteld en de truffelmand was tot de rand gevuld. We controleerden of we wel degelijk in een boerengat op een boerenmarkt stonden en we hadden zo onze bedenkingen over  de slaagkansen van deze winkel. Ook in deftigheidstermen  uitgedrukt is trop teveel.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">In de maanden daarna volgden we met belangstelling de evolutie van de delicatessenzaak. We zagen dat je er dure broodjes met ham kon eten en je kon topwijnen drinken aan een nieuwe wijnbar. Later werden de delicatessen mondjesmaat vervangen door keukengerei dat je moet helpen om helemaal in stijl deze exquisiteiten  te savoureren: truffelschaven, porseleinen bordjes, serviesjes om foie gras te serveren, zilveren stoppen voor je flessen….</p>
<p>Toen begin deze lente de markt haar activiteiten hervatte, was één van onze eerste bekommernissen: “Hoe zou het nog met de delicatessen zijn?”  We  werden meteen uit onze onwetendheid gehaald: ‘Liquidation totale’ schreeuwden fluoletters op de vensters.  Zo een liquidation was misschien een gelegenheid om een aardigheidje op de kop te tikken en dus stapten wij de winkel binnen.</p>
<p>We keken wat rond en ik maakte B opmerkzaam op een  ‘Carnet de cuisine van Geert Van Hecke’. Dat was de man die achter de toonbank stond niet ontgaan en volgend gesprek ontspon zich:</p>

Ik: Baat u deze zaak uit?<br />

Hij: Mij zien ze hier niet meer terug.<br />
Ik: Hoe komt dat zo?<br />
Hij: Omdat Frankrijk een pokkenland is, daarom. Ze weten nog geeneens wat goeie dingen zijn.</em></p>
<p>De man is vertrokken uit pokkenland en niemand lijkt hem hier te missen. Ik hoop van harte dat Spanjaarden wél weten wat lekker is.</p>

After today, I'm not sure I'll be heading back.  It all started well enough, with the idea of getting something to eat there before catching a train.  When we'd bought our food to take-away, I realised that we still had 15 minutes before the train was due.</p>
<p>So I asked one of the staff there if we could sit down with our food.  He said of course, so we did.  Then a very grumpy lady came over and loudly told us that she was very sorry, but we couldn't possibly sit there, as we had paid to take away.  Which was kind of embarrassing, and made me feel like some sort of furtive vagrant sneaking into their shop to sit down...</p>
<p>I completely understand that by law the place has to add VAT on to our order if we choose to eat in, so I offered to pay the difference.  Mrs Bugle was busy fuming by this point.  So we finished our (rather dry) spinach and ricotta thingy, and got up to leave.  I asked how much we owed her, and she announced £2!  Two pounds in VAT?!  I'm sure our two spinach things didn't cost more than £6, and by my reckoning, two pounds means that our food must have cost £11!  I questioned it (hell, I'd already lost any chance at getting out of there without embarrassment), and was told that it was "because we sat at the table", whatever that means.</p>
<p>It's not so much the money, as the way it was handled... Maybe she was having a bad day, but as Michael P pointed out in the <a href="http://blackheathbugle.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/david-and-goliath/#comments" target="_blank">comments</a> in the previous post about the Deli:</p>

<p><img class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid black;margin:10px;" src="http://images.play.com/covers/3516197m.jpg" alt="" width="117" height="178" /><em>The Game Plan</em> sees Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock) play an egotistical American Football star who discovers that he has a daughter when she turns up on his doorstep.  Naturally it doesn't take much brain power to figure out if he changes his naughty ways and becomes a responsible and loving father but i<img class="alignright" style="border:5px solid black;margin:10px;" src="http://images.play.com/covers/3309016m.jpg" alt="" width="117" height="178" />t might come as a surprise to learn that this is an enjoyable, if shallow, movie thanks largely to a very keen and willing cast.</p>
<p>If the kids want something a bit more substantial (or you just fancy being entertained) then <em>The Spiderwick Chronicles</em> will certainly meet your requirements.  The story revolves around twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace who move to a dusty old house  in the country with their mum and older sister.  Soon the boys (both played by Freddie Highmore) find themselves in battle with a host of creatures that want to destroy the titular book.  With genuine scares and nastiness this film might not be suitable for very young children but the deft script (John Sayles had a finger in this one), well crafted thrills and emotional back story should certainly more than fill the 'family viewing' sized hole left by Dr Who's departure from the schedules.</p>
<p>Moving up the <img class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid black;margin:10px;" src="http://images.play.com/covers/3439303m.jpg" alt="" width="117" height="178" />age bracket slightly leads us to the anime inspired <em>Batman: Gotham </em><em>Kn</em><em>ig</em><em>ht</em> (also available in a double pack with <em>Batman Begins</em>) and the dance film <em>Step Up 2: The Streets</em>.  The former is a bridging exercise in the run up to the release of <em>The Dark Knight</em> (surely the most anticipated film this summer) whilst the later is more of the same damn popular formula that made <em>Step Up</em> a smash hit (again a double pack is available).</p>
<p>Those looking for a bit of drama would be well advised to avoid trash Brit-horror <em>The Cottage</em> and head straight for <em>Things We Lost In The Fire</em> which, whilst flawed, features (far too<img class="alignright" style="border:5px solid black;margin:10px;" src="http://images.play.com/covers/3513870m.jpg" alt="" width="117" height="178" /> little) <em>David Duchovny</em> on top form in a supporting role that both anchors and lifts the intimate drama between Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro.</p>
<p>To finish with it's good news for fans on inventive and original cinema with the release of <span style="color:#008000;">DVD of the Week</span> <em>I'm Not There</em>.  Todd Haynes' Bob D<img class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid black;margin:10px;" src="http://images.play.com/covers/5573107m.jpg" alt="" width="117" height="178" />ylan biopic is a dazzling display of both style and substance with six actors portraying the man variously described as a genius and a Judas.  The film is as contradictory and unpredictable as the man himself as it flicks between eras, styles and personae.  Love it or hate it (and many do, including Dylan fans) you can't deny that Haynes has a style like no one else and we are all the better for it.</p>
<p>...talking of style, this week also sees the release of a box set dedicated to the work of Jean-Pierre Jeunet &#38; Marc Caro.  The set contains both <em>Delicatessen</em> and <em>The City Of Lost Children</em> plus the short film <em>The Bunker Of The Lost Gunshots</em> - enjoy.</p>
