“They need to see you at 8:30; bring your gun and your badge…just in case. You know the

"They need to see you at 8:30; bring your gun and your badge...just in case. You know the deal, I'm sure." Words he had heard spoken before to other officers, but had never dreamed would be addressed to him. "Sure, Lou. I'll be there. Hopefully this won't take too long, either way it goes..."

It's never a good day when someone has to speak to the IA, the Internal Affairs department. Those detectives were not only the best in their respective departments, but they had an aura of secrecy about them. Ruthless in their determination, absolute in their confidentiality, the mere names of the IA members were closely guarded. The less known about them, the better and easier they could operate across the functional and political boundaries that existed within the force as a whole. Frank had been considered for a spot at one time, but unknown to him, he was found "unqualified due to personal attributes." The IA had investigated him and knew of his extramarital excursions. Too much of an opportunity for bias, prejudice and/or blackmail for Frank to be effective.

"Detective Quadro, the purpose of this meeting is to inform you that we are investigating your possible involvement in the murder case of one Cliff Culpepper. We are not accusing you of the crime at this time, and we certainly hope that we do not have to do so in the future. All we are trying to do is establish in what fashion you have a relationship to the case. This is a standard procedural inquiry, as I am sure you are aware, and as long as you fully cooperate with our investigation, barring any unforeseen complications, you should be back on the job very quickly. While you are not under oath, we ask that you tell the truth since any testimony today may need to be used in court at a later date. Do you understand the purpose of this meeting?"

The IA man had read the statement very deliberately, almost devoid of any true conversational tone. For legal purposes the statement had to be read and he had to agree to it. The IA clearly wanted to present the obligatory oratory in the least confrontational manner so as to put Frank at ease, possibly getting him to let his guard down just enough to unintentionally let go of a clue.

"I understand. Let's just get this over with, please."

"Frank, my name is Dan Hollingsworth. I'm a detective over in narcotics. This shouldn't take too long. There is, however, one more standard procedure that we must take care of before we can continue..."

Frank knew that a cop's two most valuable possessions were his badge and his gun. During any IA interview, the officer being questioned had to place both on the desk, symbolizing that his life as a certified peace officer and all that it entailed was literally "on the table for all to see."

Unclipping the gold shield from his belt, Frank carefully and gently placed it on the desk, centered between the two of them, with the badge facing Dan, as if to remind him that while he was doing the investigating - he needed to remember that he was addressing a fellow detective.

The gun took a little more time. Grasping the handle of his 45 caliber Colt semi automatic, Frank tilted the piece forward enough to unlock it from his holster. These holsters were somewhat new, specifically designed for police departments. A locking mechanism was positioned in such a way that the officer could easily pull the gun, but a suspect or assailant would not be able to pull the handle at the correct angle to release the gun from the holster. This holster had already been credited with saving numerous lives; it was a favorite among most law enforcement types.

When handing a firearm over to another person, there is an unwritten ritual that must be followed. Failure to use this ritual places the recipient at a disadvantage, not knowing the true intention of the deliverer. Frank knew better than to press his luck any further than his little display of machismo with the badge. He unholstered the 45, pointed it up and away from Dan, then pressing the magazine release button, allowed the magazine to drop from his weapon. Catching it as it fell, Frank placed the magazine on the desk, next to the badge.

Holding the gun with his left hand, Frank then grasped the upper receiver and pulled back. The internal ejector popped the remaining round out of the weapon. Frank let it fall to the desk as he locked the upper assembly in place, to the rear. Taking one last look at the chamber to ensure there were no live rounds still inside the gun, Frank cautiously placed the Colt 1911 on the desk, barrel pointed away from both of he and Dan. If there was one thing that every peace officer took seriously, it was his or her service weapon.

"Thank you. Let's begin with your relationship to Cliff Culpepper..."

Título alternativo: "El cánon Holmsiano"
Autor: Arthur Conan Doyle
Año: 1887-1926
ISBN: 84-376-2034-1

- Estudio en escarlata (A Study in Scarlet, novela, 1887).
- El signo de los cuatro (The Sign of Four, novela, 1890).
- Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, conjunto de relatos, 1891–92).
- Las memorias de Sherlock Holmes (The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, conjunto de relatos, 1892–93).
- El sabueso de los Baskerville (The Hound of the Baskervilles, novela, 1901–02).
- El retorno de Sherlock Holmes (The Return of Sherlock Holmes, conjunto de relatos, 1903–04).
- El valle del terror (The Valley of Fear, novela, 1914–15).
- El último saludo (His Last Bow, conjunto de relatos, 1908–17).

Título original: Азазель (Azazel)
Autor: Boris Akunin (pseudónimo de Grigory Shalvovich Chkhartishvili)
Año: 1998
ISBN: 978-84-7888-729-3

The good news is that I finally get my in person interview which will occur next Tuesday. They emailed an application to me to complete and bring with me. There are two questions that I have not seen before. List the total value of money and other things that you have stolen in the past. Do they think I knocked over a taco stand at some point? Describe your current average monthly use of alcohol. Given that the current month at the time of application will be September, I will be sober as a judge. Given that I spent a week in the Keys, my answer for August would be impressive, ambitious or epic.

Hello All:

Hello All:

I'm sure some of the things I post must seem like Science Fiction, or, that I just 'dreamed it up.' But, I swear these are real events in Springerville, AZ.

"The Neighbor" has outdone himself this time; he has had surveillance cameras installed on the neighbors' houses now too. And some of you commenter's had the nerve to call me paranoid. What is he watching you may ask? For one thing; ME. The other thing he's watching, that is almost as important is his so-called manhood :)

Yup, I think he actually believes that his precious survey marker represents his manhood. If it does, poor 'little' thing :)

He also believes that any time I have something on my property he doesn't especially like all he has to do is move the survey marker over, past whatever it is he dislikes, and then remove my property. After all, it is now on his side of the marker. I have never seen anyone so sickly obsessed with an 'object!'

If I had the money he has, and uses to purchase people that are useful to him, I would use it for something good; like starving and homeless children. I certainly wouldn't be using it for his manner of evil and maleficence. But, I am convinced that this is all he, and his wife, have in their lives, how pathetic.

After I retired from the Nursing profession I taught High School; English Lit., English, and US History. I made sure that my students understood what their rights were; not many people do, unfortunately. So, let me see, right now "The Stalker" and the Springerville Police are violating the following of my rights; Section 8 of the Human Rights Act, the Fourteenth Amendment, and my First Amendment rights. What makes it so frustrating is that no one seems to be the least interested in doing anything about it. Sometimes, I just can't believe how hateful the human race has become.

I'm not sure if it's because I wrote about the Springerville Police in my book, and their do-nothing practices, or if it's "The Neighbor's" unbelievable power and influence over the officials in this town, but, he has now managed to get the Arizona STATE Police involved in securing his 'territory' and the #^&*^%$#@^ fence!!! The Springerville Police Department asked them to 'assist' with an issue "With you and your neighbor!" As far as I know the issue is a civil one, however, the Springerville Police overstepped the boundaries last year when they allowed "The Neighbor" to do anything he wanted, with NO consequences. Now, they want the State Police to bail them out.

Oh, before I forget; the Police report for "The Neighbor" coming onto my property, tearing away part of my fence, and then tearing down my No Trespass sign, on 8/5? Effectively disappeared!!!

Check it out for yourself; contact the Eagar, AZ Police Department and ask them for a copy of report #08-1834 and see what they tell you:

Regards,

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="130" caption="Sherlock Holmes"][/caption]

With these immortal words the public were introduced to the most famous of double acts: that of Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr John H. Watson. They remain as popular as ever with the Victorian setting enhancing rather than diminishing their appeal.

Since their appearance in 1887, they have been portrayed by formidable actors. Many swear by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, although the latter's portayal of Watson as a bumbling, aged idiot has its critics.

A more impressive couple on Granada TV were Jeremy Brett with firstly, David Burke and then Edward Hardwicke. Unfortunately, Brett became too obsessed with the role and along with the demands of work made him severely ill. The need to shoot around his later absences made some of the later TV episodes disappointing and confusing. However, it must be stressed that they are still more than watchable.

The definitve pair has to be (and I will brook no opposition) ...

... that of Clive Merrison and Michael Williams in the dramatisations for BBC radio. I will brook no other rivals. This is the only time that the same two actors have performed in all 56 short stories and 4 novels. The production values are superlative, the acting wonderful and the fleshing out of the original stories done with great skill. These are tales to be listened to over and over.

Now the library has been buying the collected editions starting with The Adventures and The Memoirs. Instead of each collection of short stories being split up into three separate CD packs, borrowers can now luxuriate and thrill to nine hours of prime mystery and spellbinding atmosphere.

One fan wrote 'One of the few broadcasts that I can listen to again and again. The whole thing is a joy. Good stories beautifully transcribed for the radio. Superb actors with such lovely voices. Maybe these should be used as 'master classes'.

Most were dramatised by Bert Coules and it is a tribute to his skills that his own creation The FurtherAdventures of Sherlock Holmes were broadcast by the BBC. This time, as Michael Williams had sadly died, Andrew Sachs played Watson. Unlike most Holmesian tributes, these are intelligent and veer dangerously close to being as good as the originals.

The original four disc sets are also still obtainable from the library, but we don't appear to have any of the longer novels with this pair as stars. There is an opportunity to recommend items to be bought here.

As pistas espanholas

- l'acceptation de la profession dans tous les pays francophones dans le respect de leurs intérêts fondamentaux respectifs;

Suspicious Minds by Christy Barritt

I've been reading some excellent books lately and I want to share them with you during my great books week.

Christy Barritt's sequel to Hazardous Duty, Suspicious Minds, is even better than the first.

I've said before, I like quirky characters. And most of those quirky characters are detectives of some sort like Monk and Psych.

The heroine in Suspicious Minds is a student of forensic science. To earn money she opens a crime scene cleaning business which I think is an extremely interesting job. One that I would not like to do. She is hurled into another investigation when she discovers a dead Elvis Impersonator (make that tribute artist) under a job site she was inspecting.

I like to think of the book as a cross between CSI and Monk/Psych. If you love those shows you'll love Suspicious Minds. Christy Barritt writes with humor and wit and manages to keep me turning the pages.

I can't wait for the sequel. I've gotta know which guy the heroine ends up with. Great romantic conflict.

In 1860, the British public became obsessed with a disturbing murder of a young boy in an English country house. Suspicions fell upon the members of the household. Letter writers besieged authorities and newspapers with their theories about "who dunnit" at Road Hill House. Was it the father and the nursemaid? The nursemaid and a lover? The jealous children of the first wife? Neighbors who despised the family? There was adultery, madness, a governess who became the stepmother.

Journalists camped out at the house and court. Sounds just like today.

Scotland Yard sent its best -- Detective Inspector Jonathan Whicher who made great headway, only to be attacked for his intrusion on the sanctity of the English home and hearth.

The story is detailed in Kate Summerscale's book, "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher."

The case inspired much of today's detective fiction, beginning with Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone." Charles Dickens was fascinated by the case and had his own theories. He used elements of the case in his own works.

The book discusses origins of the language of detection. The word "clue" comes from "clew," meaning a ball of thread or yarn. It came to mean "that which points the way" because of the Greek myth in which Theseus uses a ball of yarn, given to him by Ariadne, to find his way of the Minotaur's labyrinth. People unravel mysteries. They untangle the knots and follow the thread of evidence.

The book also talks about our uneasy relationship with the police. We need them, yet resent their prying. The original detective ("detect" is from the Latin de-tegere or to "unroof") was Asmodeus, the prince of demons, who removed roofs to spy on the lives inside, according to the author. This was a book I couldn't put down.

Your own mystery: In the photo above, what is the detective examining?

THREE VERSIONS: EVIDENCE OF THE SEXUAL ABUSE OF ELSA NEWMAN’S CHILDREN…

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SUPPOSED “RECANTATION” –AS SAID “RECANTATION” WAS ORCHESTRATED BY QUE EDWINA WALLACE—

As a matter of fact, one of the reasons I believe Elsa Newman is because of this horrendous interrogation of her two children by detectives. Let me say here, quite plainly, that as an attorney who believed the American system of justice was sure to help her and her two sons, Elsa was far more than a little naïve. She was a lot naïve.

So when Que Edwina Wallace and a partner strongly suggested that Elsa Newman bring her two sons in for questioning, Elsa obliged, sure that cooperation with authorities would work to the advantage of herself and her sons. The disclosures of the boys were to be heard at last. As I understand the series of events, Que Edwina Wallace took the two little boys aside into some sort of interrogation room. Elsa was informed that she would wait for them elsewhere.

While Elsa waited for her sons in this place apart from the interrogation room, the boys were grilled—by Que Edwina Wallace, as I understand it—literally for hours, about their disclosures of sexual abuse. They had imparted the details of this sexual abuse to their mother. They had stated clearly that their father was the abuser. They were held in that room for so long that Elsa’s younger son—too frightened to ask permission to use a bathroom—emptied his bowels into his underwear. Shortly after that, he was apparently escorted to a different room to wait for his mother. Probably smelled bad enough that the interrogating detective didn’t want to put up with the odor.

After many hours—I believe it was over six hours—the interrogating detective, this same Que Edwina Wallace, emerged, triumphant and absolutely beaming, from the interrogation room, followed by Elsa’s older son, who appeared so weary that a simple thing like walking was almost beyond him. This was [name omitted.] [Name omitted] had gone completely white in the face. “[This young man],” announced Que Edwina Wallace, “has made a disclosure.” Elsa stared at her, puzzled, unable to understand why this officer of the law that Elsa so trusted… wondered why she was so happy if the boy had, indeed, made a disclosure of abuse. “Tell her,” said Que Edwina Wallace to [the boy.]

White-faced, obviously anguished, the boy blurted, “I made it all up, Mom,” and hung his head.

Elsa was left to claim her younger son, clean him up as best she could in a restroom, take the two boys home and try to restore some degree of their faith in themselves and what they knew to be true.

And Que Edwina Wallace? Whoever had instructed her to see to it that the boys sucked back their disclosures and began denying…whoever that was must have been very pleased with Que Edwina Wallace. Very pleased indeed.

SO ENDS THIS ACCOUNT OF A POLICE DETECTIVE WHO CONDUCTED BRUTAL INTERROGATION OF TWO VERY NICE LITTLE BOYS WHO TRIED THEIR BEST TO MAINTAIN THE HONESTY AND INTEGRITY OF THEIR DISCLOSURES—AND WHO FAILED BECAUSE ONE QUE EDWINA WALLACE APPARENTLY REFUSED TO ALLOW THEM TO LEAVE THE ROOM UNTIL THEY HAD RECANTED.

QUE EDWINA WALLACE WOULD HAVE DONE THE INQUISITION PROUD!
