So, in case you haven’t heard, Disney decided that the covers already out there for Nightmare

So, in case you haven't heard, Disney decided that the covers already out there for Nightmare Before Christmas would be a great way to make some money. But instead of using those covers, they hunted down their own.

I love this damn movie. And not recently. I loved it when it was in theaters and I was but a wee child. I was spooky from a young age.

I'll give you a quick rundown.

Overture(DeVotchKa)

Pretty straight-faced playthrough, nothing too wild or out there. I didn't get the feel for the cover artist, just more Nightmare stuff. Still, not bad. Listenable.

Opening (Danny Elfman)

Not technically revisiting, is it? This is all ground he's ploughed before. Cheating. Let's move on.

This Is Halloween (Marylin Manson)

This is an old cover. If you haven't heard it by now, you lose at the internet. Still, it's solid. Say what you will about Marylin Manson, he knows what songs to cover. Another solid version of this is offered up by Panic at the Disco.

Jack's Lament (All American Rejects)

Now, understand, this is my favorite song of the movie. I absolutely adore it. So when I hear that whiny voice streak through my eardrum, I wail inside. I got 20 seconds into this song before I had to turn it off, and only 4 seconds of that was comprised of vocals. Next.

Docter Finkelstein/In the Forest (Amina)

Thus far, the instrumentals are two-for-two on being good, and this one takes a step outside of what Nightmare originally laid out for it. I think this one's quite well done. Loving the theramin.

What's This? (Flyleaf)

Ugh. So, instrumentals are winning, but vocal bits are just... not clearing it. Her vocals are not quite emotive enough to handle the wonder that is supposed to be coursing through this song. She sings "What's this?" but it sounds like she really couldn't care less about what anything is.

I never in my life thought I'd write these words, but Fallout Boy did it better. You have failed. Next.

Town Meeting Song (The Polphonic Spree)

Let me just get this out of the way: I love The Polyphonic Spree. And their absolutely inspired cover of Nirvana's Lithium made me very curious to hear this. I'm really enjoying this one. It's not what I expected, but it's doing it's thing and taking me along with it. Best of the vocal songs so far. My only real complaint is that it needs to pick up the pace.

Jack and Sally Montage (The Vitamin String Quartet)

Another instrumental. Rather meh. Doesn't entice, doesn't push away. It's just there, four people on string instruments playing some music that stays just this side of spooky.

Jack's Obsession (Sparklehorse)

I didn't know you could ruin this song this badly. After all, it's a bit more obscure, and doesn't draw as much love or notice as the others. I thought this would slip under the radar of suck. I was wrong.

Kidnap the Sandy Claws (Korn)

It's Korn. I don't think I have to say any more. I started laughing at this cover not ten seconds in. I'd much rather be listening to She Wants Revenge, and even I'm able to recognize that SWR didn't do that amazing of a cover.

Making Christmas (Rise Against)

Not horrible, but the vocals just do not work for this song.

I've started down this dark path, and I will finish. Not rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail will stop me from this crap. But good God, what have I condemned myself to?

Nabbed (Yoshida Brothers)

More instrumental. More delicious things-not-sucking. Seriously, I could take half those singers to school on how you do these songs, and I'm barely passable. This track is great, really divergent from the original, displaying the Yoshida Brothers for what they are, but still keeps that kick of what the song once was.

Oogie Boogie's Song (Rodrigo y Gabriela)

So, wow. First, whatever made Disney decide to pick up these two is beyond me, but for once, God bless 'em for making a good call. This was a wonderful cover, even if you don't like two guitars playing maniacally side-by-side (which really, if you don't, what's your problem?). Gabriela's standard percussion-style strumming and Rodrigo's sharp picking make for an amazing cover here.

Sally's Song (Amy Lee)

When I first saw who was singing this, I muttered "Goddamnit." She has a solid voice, but it's so typical, putting the lead singer of Evanescence on this kind of project. Still. She did a very solid job, and I really can't complain. It doesn't compete with Fiona Apple's version at all. I think the two bring their own things to the table, and shouldn't have to fight for the lead.

Christmas Eve Montage (RJD2)

Meh.

Poor Jack (Plain White T's)

First of all... what? The Hey-There-Delilah assholes covering Nightmare Before Christmas music? And... wow. This... isn't terrible. Crap. Have my standards fallen so low that this is good, or is it good on its own?

To the Rescue (Datarock)

The first few measures of standard uhn-tiss made me concerned. Largely, not bad, but not incredible. Feels like that's become the mantra of this CD (alongside "singers can't sing").

Finale/Reprise (Shiny Toy Guns)

And welcome to why I'm here. Hearing this is a terrible tease. It makes me want to hear them cover the whole album. I can only imagine how they'd kick ass at What's This, Sally's Song (though I'd wager Carah would swing it better than Sisley). Ah, well. Damn.

Closing (Danny Elfman)

Cheating.

End Title (The Album Leaf)

Maybe we go through a lot of suck, but this is prettymuch the best way to wrap up this CD.

In the end? I'd say don't buy it, just download the good tracks.

New bands dominated my play list this week with The Dresden Dolls taking out my band of the week wit

New bands dominated my play list this week with The Dresden Dolls taking out my band of the week with a mammoth 60 plays. It was something about how they were labeled, as punk cabaret, that led me to acquire them in the first place and led me to listen to them over and over.

The punk cabaret madness didn't stop there. Former Dresden Doll member Amanda Palmer came third with 35 plays and her outstanding new album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer?, because you know we need more Twin Peaks references in our lives. That album was the most played one of the week, with the Dresden Dolls plays being divided up by three albums.

Going back a little, an old favourite The Decemberists came second on the back of their new singles release. TV On The Radio enjoyed a "new album" high to come in fourth and DeVotchka came in fifth. Here's a video of the Dresden Dolls for your enjoyment.

In my running points total, which boasts an overly complex formula to do something very simple sees DeVotchka rise to the top. Outing the Beatles who fall to third. The Decemberists and the Able Tasmans are the biggest risers of the week but we can see them on this top ten. You'll have to see the full post to see the full table.

People are always asking me where I hear of all the weird and new stuff I listen to and talk about (by "people", I mean "no one" and by "always", I mean "never"--but go with it, ok?). Some of my sources are podcasts - specifically the Morning Becomes Eclectic series from KCRW and the WOXY Lounge Acts. They both feature live in-studio performances from (usually) indie bands, but you never truly know who will pop up. The reason I like it is that it's a great way to hear how the band's sound translates into a live setting; sometimes, this can be quite the revelation. For example, Black Kids played a very lackluster version of "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance" on Letterman, but their KCRW set actually sounded great. The Elected had the opposite effect, sounding brutal in their appearance at WOXY.

Anyway, the reason I'm bringing it up now is to highlight two great performances I just heard on Morning Becomes Eclectic. The first one was Dr. Dog, an alt-country/phychedelic-esque act from Philly who's touring in support of a great new disc called Fate. The other was from DeVotchKa, who you should remember from the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. Recent highlights from WOXY include a phenomenal set by The Black Angels and, earlier in the year, Cursive.

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that, as soon as I get up in the morning, I like to

It probably won't surprise you to learn that, as soon as I get up in the morning, I like to put on music. It's not always doable, with a house full of family, everyone scrambling to get dressed, eat, and get out the door in time for school, work, athletic events, etc. At these moments, music only contributes to the chaos, especially when there are young children within earshot, and that is not what I need. What I need then is earplugs and a megaphone.

Nonetheless, on most weekdays, when all are finally off and it's time for me to settle in to work, I turn on my favorite DJ, "John in the Morning" (aka, John Richards), on the air at KEXP in Seattle, and let the music flow. (Luckily, through the magic of the Interweb, I hear John's show starting at 9 a.m., though he greets his "morning faithful" at the ungodly hour of 6 a.m. each weekday.) John always starts the morning off with something interesting, and often new, and I look forward to hearing his show.

The music helps me get started, keeps me company, and allows me to focus. It's always been that way for me, ever since I was given a music player to control. Music certainly kept me going through long, lonely nights of study and term-paper writing in high school and college, and it has sustained me for more than two decades as a working stiff -- whether serving as a channel marker to guide me through the din of a crowded newsroom or as comfort in a cloistered copyediting booth. It's better than Starbucks, and cheaper than a therapist. And, as it turns out, I am not the only one who is affected in this way. Research shows that music engages the areas of the human brain that are used for focusing and paying attention. Rock on!

So, for this week, I am going to play DJ and offer for your listening pleasure (and concentrating acuity) about 60 minutes' worth of morning music, comprised exclusively of songs released in 2008 that I like to hear playing when I start the day.

"Sun It Rises": Fleet Foxes - The perfect song to start the day. I have written previously about these guys and their gorgeous debut record, so I will say no more. But I just didn't think I could discuss morning tunes and not include this beautiful, haunting, hymn-like folk tune in the mix.

"St Modesto": Chris Walla - The Death Cab For Cutie guitarist debuted his solo recording, Field Manual, in January, just a few short months before his band released their latest, and not surprising, it got overshadowed. I think it's nonetheless a tremendously eclectic and stand-out collection of songs, and this is my favorite cut. There's a nice locomotive "chug-a-chug" pace to the drums, carrying an REMish jangly guitar line, that keeps me moving around the room. And I like the softspokenness of his singing voice here, as well. It's like coffee talk.

"Clockwise Witness": Devotchka - For someone who spends a good deal of each day watching the clock and keeping tabs on the time, I feel as if this song was written for me (I love the line, "if you win the rat race, you come in first place, and a rat you will always be"). I have been a Devotchka devotee for a long time, enjoying their out-of-time sound, but most people will know them best by their recent work on the much-acclaimed movie, "Little Miss Sunshine." The tick-tock toy piano notes and pizzicato strings make it sound as if you are inside a clock.

"Morning Cup": Joseph Arthur - This has been a fruitful year for fans of Joseph Arthur, who has so far delivered four EPs full of music and has a full-length imminent. This is my favorite song from the extant outpouring and, with its stripped down sound (just acoustic guitar, a smattering of percussion instruments, and a gentle, faint hint of fuzz guitar), it has started my morning many times. It is also one of the most hopeful anti-war songs I've heard in a long time.

"Med sud i eyrum": Sigur Ros - The new LP from this creative Icelandic group is a departure away from the spacier, more ethereal music (which I love) of their last four records and toward a more mainstream sound (which I love, too). This track (don't ask me how to pronounce it, since the band sings in a made-up language) sounds a little like what I imagine the Elves from "The Lord of the Rings" would sound like, if they formed a rock band. The appropriately named "Gobbledigook" is a worthy a.m. stand-in.

"Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is in Another Castle": Mountain Goats - John Darnielle has a gift for great song-storytelling (matched only by his delightful knack for writing great song titles). Opting to share the mic this time, Darnielle, aka the "Mountain Goats," recently recorded a 6-song EP with singer and multi-instrumentalist Kaki King, called Black Pear Tree. This quirky, twee song, with its one-note-at-a-time piano melody and swishy brushed-snare sound, reminds me of the skating scene from a "Peanuts" cartoon -- so much so, I reach for my blanket.

"Sky": Joshua Radin - This is a wake-up-and-make-up-in-the-morning-with-your-lovey song if ever one was written. Radin invites pop phenom Ingrid Michaelson to chime in about a third of the way through this breathy dreamer to put flesh on the premise of a twosome at the heart of the lyrics. And it's at about that point that the tap-tap heartbeat of the drumming starts, the guitar picks up the pace, and the song really wakes up. It's a clever conceit and one that delights me every time I hear it.

"Only as the Day Is Long": Sera Cahoone - This Seattlite has a voice that's hard to pin down, part this, part that: smooth and sultry, like a jazz singer; slow and twangy, like a country crooner; or rough and edgy, like a woman with the blues. On this, the title track from her new record, there's a little bit of everything: chorus harmonies reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, bluesy harmonica, soft tambourine slaps, and a rolling plunka-plunka banjo. No matter what you hear in it, though, this song sounds nothing if not hopeful early in the morning.

"The Ghost Inside Our House": Cloud Cult - There are ghosts literal and figurative in this brief song, my favorite from this Minnesota-based folk-psych-rock band's new record, Feel Good Ghosts. Along with the spirit hopefully spotted and followed by the singer in the opening lines, the shades of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, and other fey singer-songwriters long gone fade in and out, dreamily. And, when you work at home alone all day, in a century-old house, you can believe such things.

"Red Balloons": Carter Tanton - The lead singer for Tulsa, a band I played continuously last year, Tanton made a solo recording of this song live in the studio at KEXP (and it was included on the new "Live at KEXP Vol. 4" compilation, which you can order on CD or as a download from here, and I highly recommend you do.) By far my favorite morning song so far this year, maybe my favorite song period this year. The combination of Joni Mitchell-like open-tuning guitar strumming, Tanton's quivering-scratchy voice, and evocative lyrics ("the deep deep blue of the morning / it gets to me every time") gets to me every time.

"Get Better": Mates of State - Who doesn't like hopefulness and optimism early in the morning? Especially when accompanied by a string section, Jason Hammel's pounding drums, and Kori Gardner's cheery high, Karen Carpenter-esque voice. This talented duo consistently produce great pop songs, and this one, from the new LP, Rearrange Us, provides an apt rallying cry for this year's political season: "Everything's going to get louder, even if it never gets better."

"5 Years Time": Noah and the Whale - Every time I hear the whistling at the beginning of this song, it grabs my attention and pulls me in, like the opening of "The Andy Griffith Show." It sounds inviting, infectious, and upbeat, and I imagine the members of this British neo-folk group waving me over to stroll around with them, strumming ukes, fiddling, and plinking mandolins. Oh, what "fun, fun, fun" it would be, indeed.

"Abandon": French Kicks - The New York-based quartet came out with a new album, Swimming, this spring that met with much (deserved) acclaim. They have an elegant, layered pop sound that I enjoy, exemplified on this cut, from the echoy, chiming opening guitar riffs, to the U2-like ratatat drumming, to Josh Wise's soaring vocal harmonies. It's lush, laid-back, and daydreamy -- the perfect way to start a Friday morning, with "abandon."

"I'm Amazed": My Morning Jacket - Right from the get-go, when I first heard this song, with the catchy, swirling guitar lead-in and uplifting group harmonies, I knew I needed to hear it again and again. Although I wasn't won over as easily by everything on the new record, Evil Urges, this one is gorgeous. A little on the raucous side for a morning tune, admittedly, but sometimes it takes more than a brisk walk and coffee to crank up the motor.

And that's the point, I suppose. So, give a listen to these songs, which I hope will keep you entertained, engaged, and productive, for at least the first hour of your day.

Let me know what you think of my choices. Anyone else have any songs they like to hear first thing in the morning?

I just thought I'd do a search for 2008 in my music collection and got a nice big list of albums I've downloaded this year - a full 31. Have any been worth it? Sure. In no particular order...

Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords
OK, So I don't know if this really counts - it is essentially just the soundtrack to the first season of their tv show. But the songs are so addictive and unlike any other comedy albums I've listened to on a regular basis - this hasn't turned into one of those annoying gimmicks that need to be skipped the moment it comes on shuffle. Nothing beats a big sing-a-long to 'Business Time'.

R.E.M. - Accelerate
This is the first REM album that I've liked in about 12 years. It completely abandons the kind of soft pop/rock route that had been following for the last decade and instead make their most 'rock and roll' album ever.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
From one aging 80s rock group to another. This time we move our focus from Athens, Georgia to Australia. There's plenty of stuff by Nick Cave that I don't like. This is one of those albums that just highlight how awesome he can be. Just can't play this album when I'm meant to be doing something... I just get drawn into the lyrics.

DeVotchka - A Mad & Faithful Telling
From the guys that bought you the awesome score of Little Miss Sunshine comes another helping of Eastern European inspired music. This is their most beautiful album yet. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something a bit different.

Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
For anyone that wishes the New Pornographers would release an album every year. This outing is Dan Bejar's (the guy who writes a couple of songs for each New Pornographers album) solo effort. Very enjoyable.

She & Him - Volume One
This album is one I never expected to be here. This is the combination of that actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Normally the idea of movie stars trying to use their fame to fulfill their other dream of being a rock star doesn't sit well with me and normally the result is less than spectacular (William Shatner). This album though is a lot of fun. Zooey Deschanel has a unique voice to say the least.

Other albums to possibly make it once I listen to them a bit more.

Ganhou incontáveis prêmios, aqui e no exterior.

STAINES RIVERSIDE CLUB
Thursday 25th September 2008

Folk / Roots / World Music

"Dancing Round the World!"

East of Ealing play an entertaining blend of rock and roots fusion with traditional brick-built and foundry-forged folk foundations.

Folk songs are commonly regarded as songs that express something about a way of life that existed in the past (or is about to disappear) and that sense of melancholy dominates the EoE experience throughout. But the songs are lots of fun and whimsical puns are in abundance with occasionally surprising interludes that, when they pop-up like pop-tarts during the seisiún, remind you that folk music is a shared worldwide experience. Like Druhá Trava or Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, East of Ealing provide insights a-plenty into the 'nuts n bolts' regarding folk-music's evolution into what we now consider to be popular music and the emergence and distortion along the way into the forms we now consider to be rock, metal and even progressive genres. They provide intriguing and unexpected perceptions along this meandering pathway and their shared sense of fun is as welcome as their undeniable virtuosity. For example, in their imaginative and entertaining song ‘The Great Unknown’, Moorish influences prevail, but the tune soon chugs along as a ska number with Balkan folk flourishes. And for those who did not know that punk rock is a direct descendant of folk (I kid you not) East of Ealing provides plenty of references of this musical criss-crossing from the reels, hornpipes and jigs of trad folk to the kind of stripped down rock that foretold punk and can be witnessed in the early Pogues but also in Hothouse Flowers and later The Clash. In fact EoE pays a decent and respectful nod to retropunk founders The Clash circa 1981 with a very eloquent version of ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’.

Along the way, there is lots of fun in the East of Ealing repertoire with musical puns a-plenty and always a glint-in-the-eye and a tongue-in-the-cheek as you try to keep up with the myriad of tiny musical one-liners and tuneful punch-lines. There is plenty to get your teeth into including third generation bluegrass style where each instrument takes a melody and improvises upon the sounds that pops up around it, (kinda like jazz folk) similar to Druhá Tráva or Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.

There are also large portions of Eastern European sounds especially in the new single 'Black Ship' and these sounds cross-over to more traditional Roma music and then back to punk/ska like other brands of rebel music similar in light-hearted style to Gogol Bordello or DeVotchKa. Pre-Raphaelite beauty Stephanie Graffitti squeezes some amazing sounds out of her electric fiddle from Pink Floyd-esque or Moody Blues-ish ‘mellotron’ type sounds all the way through to Led Zep style screeching 'guitar' breaks. Judging by her undisputed talents I would guess that our Stef is a classically trained musician but she still seems to be more of a ‘fiddle player’ than a ‘violinist’ in that she seeks adventure, uniqueness of sound and versatility in her instrument rather than wanting to be confined by traditional expectations. Her voice, though, is not sharp, pronounced or even remarkable ...so don’t expect something similar to Steeleye Span or early Fairport Convention if you come to an East of Ealing gig.

Jim Bean provides most of the lead vocals and looks like a tall pirate with a neckerchief and an artful grin. When I met Jim he was suffering from the early onset of flu-like symptoms and looked like he was about to peg-out! But he is truly a working class hero and a musical warrior to boot and so pulled off a brave second set with energy and enthusiasm. He plays a wonderful acoustic bass and also uses an electric squeezebox to give the sounds more imagery. Paul Castleman on percussion cannot be ignored. Paul is a superbly talented drummer with a sense of the mischievous in his reliable rhythms. Mik P plays guitars and it is he who provides the rawness and energy that lifts East Of Ealing from its trad-folk roots and prods, pushes and pokes the sound towards the folk-rock genre.

East of Ealing are folksters tinged with punky irony like ‘The Knitters’ mixed and slooshed about-a-bit with some metal irony like Korpiklaani. The result is bliss!

I still can’t believe how many great concerts I just saw this past weeken

[caption id="attachment_172" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Red Rocks main stage"][/caption]

I still can't believe how many great concerts I just saw this past weekend in Denver. It was one great show after another. There was no one particular performance I was waiting for, so it felt like the concert that just kept giving. It would have taken me months to see all of these bands as they made tour stops in NYC. Plus, I would have had to fork over multiple Ticketmaster fees and sit through some not-so-great opening bands.

The Monolith Festival included two outdoor stages, two indoor, and one smaller side stage for acoustic sets. Getting from stage to stage wasn't too difficult, as long as you've been training on your stair-master. I have to say that if this crowd wasn't already physically fit, they certainly were by the end of the weekend. The hike up the steps from the main stage to the 3 other stages took some endurance and good quads. The people who organized the event did a great job, as every band's performance started on time, and the changing of the gear went like clockwork. I was quite impressed. With only thirty minutes between sets, the crew had no problem moving things right along. The one drawback to the Red Rocks venue was that the weather changed dramatically once the sun went down. It went from a 70-degree summer day to a chilly 45 degree evening. On the first day, I wore jeans, t-shirt, and sandals, which was fine until about 7pm. On the second day I was prepared and packed a hat, gloves, fleece jacket, sneakers and a blanket. At least the indoor stages were a nice break from the sun during the day and place to warm up in during the evening. But you cannot beat the scenery at Red Rocks. During the day, you're surrounded by massive rock formations, mountains in the distance, and a view for miles. At night, the city skyline was illuminated in the distance.

Let's get to the music...here's a list of the bands I saw this weekend.

Day 1
Port O'Brien
The Muslims
John Vanderslice
The Hood Internet
Superdrag
The Fratellis
Vampire Weekend
Del The Funky Homosapien
Silversun Pickups
Devotchka

Day 2
Band of Horses
The Avett Brothers
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
TV on the Radio
Tokyo Police Club
CSS
Justice

Why I like Monolith Festival:

1) Band of Horses

2) There are no "opening" bands. By picking and choosing the bands I wanted to see, there was no need to sit and endure a band I didn't want to see as I waited for another band. Also, every band had decent lighting, good sound, and enough time to play. Though, Port O'Brien should have had at least 45 minutes. They made the trip from California just to play their 30 minute set, but it was well worth it, at least that's what I gathered from the big crowd that turned out for their 2 pm show.

3) Unlike a film festival, where each film viewing is at least an hour and a half, at Monolith you can just watch a little bit of a band's set and then leave if you want to go catch another band's performance. And people don't even have to stand to let you out.

4) Cloud Cult. And sightings of its band members throughout the festival.

5) Not only was every band in awe of the scenery, they were in awe of the lineup and really excited to be there. Lots of band members were seen listening to other bands, something they probably don't get to do too often while on the road. It made it a really supportive atmosphere and the artists just blended in with the crowd.

6) DeVotchKa's string section, horn section, and the tuba decked out in red lights.

7) Band of Horses. Yeah, they get two spots on the list.

8 ) A rain-free Vampire Weekend performance!!! We were owed that one.

Some other highlights:

- Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings put on a very entertaining show. Shoes come off, members of the crowd come onstage, and Sharon Jones gets a good aerobic workout. It was nice to hear a female voice, as all of the other bands I saw (except for CSS at the very end) were lead by male vocals.

- Port O'Brien's toe-tapping, pan-banging, "I Woke up Today" got the crowd revved up during a set early on Day 1.

- I overheard an event staffer describe The Avett Brothers as "The Amish Beatles." It wouldn't be my choice of words, but they get my vote for the best dressed band of the weekend.

- After an audio glitch at the kick-off part at the Bluebird Theater, The Dutchess and The Duke decided to ditch their amps and microphones and stand in the middle of the crowd to finish their set in gather-round-the-campfire style.

- Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwell brought toys for the crowd to play with--a light-up frisbee and another frisbee with a ball in the middle. When the toys seemed to disappear in the crowd, Bridwell wondered why nobody wanted to play. Also, his song dedication to his 4-month old daughter was sweet. I swear I saw her wearing teeny tiny pink headphones.

- CSS lead singer Lovefoxxx announced that she felt like Mariah Carey with all the cold mountain wind blowing through her hair. No need for wind machines at Red Rocks.

Here's a pic from the Port O'Brien performance:

DeVotchka was my most played band last week and so win the honour of being my first band of the week. They achieved this with only 15 plays but, hey, a win is a win. Just ask the Ever-Swindell twins. Second was fellow gypsy rockers Gogol Bordello, third was Talking Heads, fourth was the idiosyncratic Sparks and in a four way tie for fifth were Flight of the Conchords, Liam Finn, Yann Tiersen and Nick Cave.

Talking Heads took out the most played album award for 77 and Flight of the Conchords had the most played track for Business Time - which is what in the video below.

Lollapalooza 2008 in Chicago, IL has come to an end and while this post is a few weeks late, it's good to reminisce upon what happened. I'm going to review the groups that I saw entire sets of, as well as groups I photographed. A few photos have been placed in this post. You can also view selected photos of my experience at the festival here.

Day 1:

We started out the festival with Manchester Orchestra, whom I'd seen in concert twice before and thoroughly enjoyed their music. Unfortunately, the singer's voice was completely shot. Every high note turned into a blood curdling scream which was nearly the opposite of the band's sound. While it was a poor way to start out the festival, it was good to see that they are still around.

We wandered around for a while then took a seat waiting for Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco)'s acoustic set to begin. We were more or less 10 feet from him and he played the show looking like hell as usual. He sang from the ground amongst a crowd of small children (the show was on the Kidzapalooza stage) who clearly were there with parents that enjoyed Wilco. He asked the kids for requests who would repeat whatever their parents wanted to hear and played with the same slight tinge of rock 'n roll arrogance that makes him so unique. The show was short but great. I had prime seating so vision wasn't an issue but even the spectators two rows back couldn't see anything at all.

Next up was The Black Keys. I'm not their biggest fan but I do appreciate their music and I felt that they put on a great show. I don't know much about them but they were energetic, funny, and engaging and played the dirty, dirty, rock 'n roll roots-blues like it ought to have been played.

At some point during Day 1 we saw a relatively disappointing performance from Mates of State. For any Wes Anderson fans out there, this was THE show to see of the weekend (next to DeVotchKa) and unfortunately sound technical issues made their set somewhat painful to sit through.

The second to last act we saw of the day was Bloc Party who put on a great show musically and technically but just looked absolutely exhausted. Others in the audience noticed this too; it just looked like the band needed to eat a few sandwiches and take a long, long nap.

The final show of the evening was Radiohead who put on quite a phenomenal show as usual. For level of Radiohead fan, the setlist was sure to please as they played the majority of their hits, most of the new record In Rainbows, and a few rarities as well. A great way to end the first day.

Day 2:

We woke up especially early to make it down to Grant Park to see the group Does It Offend You, Yeah? While they had a fairly small drawing, they were one of the more fun bands of the weekend. Their crazy mismatched sound mixed with slightly raunchy lyrics made for a very entertaining show.

Next up was Dr. Dog, one of my favorites hailing from my future home in Philadelphia, PA. Their set was quite good and they played the majority of their hits. The show was both entertaining to watch and fun to listen to as the band stomped around stage and screamed out their lo-fi sound. I caught wind of an unfortunate rumor that one of their singers had contracted a throat illness and could not sing many of their songs which is why several big tunes were left out.

Dr. Dog had played at the same time as Mason Jennings, another show I wish I could have seen (I heard, from several people, that his set was quite great) so I went to see Mason play on the Kidzapalooza stage. It was good to see him up close and in a more intimate setting, however it was very apparent that he was tired and didn't want to be playing that show. Other than that, he sounded great.

We sprinted across the park to see the final few songs of the amazing Colorado group, DeVotchKa (who put on an incredible show) then saw the entire set of Explosions in the Sky. I'd seen Explosions before and was absolutely amazed by them and yet again, I was not let down. Their raw energy and focus while on the stage make for one of the best shows you can see today. They seldom speak to the audience but there is no need as their music makes up for the lack of words.

We took a few hour's refuge in the shade and went to see Wilco that night which was another great show. This was my fourth Wilco show and probably my least favorite, however they were under time constraints and pressure to play bigger hits. They entered the stage wearing Sgt. Pepper/Mariachi costumes which were a huge hit with the crowd. Not only were they still entertaining and funny as usual, but they revealed a new song which has yet to have a title. They only referred to it as a "WIP" or work-in-progress.

Day 3:

We started out the day with Kid Sister, an amazing Chicago local rapper who is rumored to be dating Kanye West. Her incredible lyrics and stage presence complemented the great dancers she brought on stage with her. It goes without saying that her DJs were incredible.

Next up was What Made Milwaukee Famous who, while a great band musically, just couldn't keep the crowd engaged in their show. Brazilian Girls was next followed by Chromeo who together put on two of my favorite shows of the weekend. Brazilian Girl's sex appeal was unleashed upon the dancing crowd and Chromeo's raw 80's beats made everyone groove.

We stuck around for the first 5 songs of Girl Talk and left when people started getting naked and climbing trees. It was a fun show to watch from afar but was overcrowded and way too crazy. In the afternoon we hung out and listened to Flosstradamus spin some records then saw the beginnings of both Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails in the evening.

Another year at Lollapalooza has come and gone and we had a blast to say the very least. Thanks to Chicago and everyone who helped in any way to help make Lollapalooza such a very special experience. Please remember to look at the rest of my photographs here. Thank you for reading.

Wow. Ok, so I already knew that DeVotchKa is a great band. I've heard the few songs that [favorite radio station EVER] The Current frequently plays, but seeing them live was incredible. Again, I regret not making it in time for the whole show, but the back half was awesome.

From what I could recognize, their instruments included a tuba and an accordion. However, a quick wiki search reveals that there's actually quite a bit more. Check out this description:

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, Mariachi (and many more styles) music with American punk and folk roots. They take their name from Anthony Burgess' Nadsat word for "young girl," which is itself derived from the Russian word (девочка) of the same meaning. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

You might recognize them from Little Miss Sunshine since they scored most of that soundtrack (again, the things I learn from wikipedia really come in handy...).

And here's a little video I found on their MySpace page:

Anyway, the show was really awesome - the blend and surprise of all those extra instruments and their harmonic vocals were so very cool. A lot of the music has an almost carnival sound to it, not surprising for a band that started by backing burlesque shows.

Will I buy the CD? YES.
Will I see them next time they're here? Yes, and I really hope it's some place small-ish.

* Saturday, August 2, 2008 *

Needless to say, the next day was kind of a slow start. Cesar and I woke up starving, so we dragged our rugged selves out of bed and around the block to the outstanding breakfast joint, The Golden Nugget Pancake House where we had much-needed coffee and a delicious breakfast. (Food review: I had the Wild West Omelet, which was an open-faced, 3-egg omelet with tomatoes, bacon, cheese, onions, and hash browns. PERFECT.)

(I'm pretty sure the kicker for this place was the "open 24 hours" part. I'd already crashed, but the boys apparently ventured here sometime between the hours of 2am and 5am the night before.)

A short time into our meal, Sean showed up, but quickly decided it was neither food nor coffee that he needed to kickstart his day, but a margarita. It just so happened there was a little taco house across the street, so he left us for the tequila. Unfortunately, his promised land was not yet open, so he walked the block and a half back to Loren's, only to find it locked and Loren still sleeping. That brought him back to us until Loren finally woke up and called him.

Anyway... showers and more coffee later and we're off!

... and onto day two. We got there in time for DeVotchka (SO sweet), then wandered a little, checking out a couple of DJ sets (Spank Rock and DJ AM) - both of which were pretty cool, but DJ AM was definitely awesome.

This is me and Loren hanging out at the DJ AM show:

(By the way, Loren made about 100 new friends wearing this shirt!)

Then, it was time to chill on the street for a bit to just hang out, people-watch, and rest our tired feet.

Eventually, we headed back to the big park to catch Lupe Fiasco on the AT&T stage, followed by the Toadies on the MySpace stage, and then Saturday night's headliners - Rage Against the Machine
The great part about the set up at Lolla and our little patch of grass was that we were able to sit far enough back from the big stage to have a perfect view of the show and the crazy crowd, while having enough room to sprawl out or jump up and down and dance if we wanted. The BEST part about this location was that, if we turned around about 120 degrees, we'd have the exact same set up for the MySpace stage - close enough to be a part of it, but far enough to have our space.

All three of those aforementioned bands put on excellent shows, Rage Against the Machine probably stirring up one of the most intensely passionate crowds I'd ever seen.

After the shows, we took to the streets with 75,000 of our closest friends. I'm not joking. The great city of Chicago closed down Lake Shore Drive and a few of the intersections alongside Grant Park, because there's no friggin way this crowd would've confined to any sort of crosswalks or traffic rules. However, as the crowd crossed Lake Shore and moved into the city, the density of the people didn't really thin out and droves upon droves of concert-goers took to the downtown streets of Chicago like the mob of a Big 10 college campus that just won the championship hockey game (Ok, I wasn't there for the Univ. of MN riots, but all my friends were and I heard about it). However, these weren't really riots - there were no overturned cars or trucks set on fire. Just a really loud crowd, erupting in spontaneous cheers and waving and screaming at the folks in their apartments above us. Every second felt like things were just about to turn crazy, but eventually the energy dispersed into side streets as these same thousands of people sought to fight for cabs or train space.

That was insane. I wish I had a picture of that - I think Porter might, and if he does, I'll edit this later to include that.

Anyway, we hopped back on the Icebox-Bound brown line, making our stop about 4 blocks from Loren's to hit up this little burrito place. The boys got giganto sized burritos while I opted for the a la carte steak tostada and chicken taco. This had to be some of the BEST fast Mex I've EVER had.

From here we walked home, had another quick beer and a smoke, and then dozed off to dreams of Lolla day three...

Day 2, though not great was better than Day 1. I was lucky enough to be one of the photographers to get in to take pictures of Rage Against the Machine, which was awesome; though we only got to shoot for the duration of 2 songs (normally we get to shoot for 3) because the crowd was insane. It was the best part of the whole weekend.

All in all I shot 5 bands this weekend (Cat Power, DeVotchKa, Brand New, Jamie Lidell and Rage Against the Machine). Jamie Lidell was nothing special and I wish I'd shot someone else, oh well. I will not be going back today and I think this photographers Lollapalooza days are done. Instead tonight I'll be at the Galaxy shooting a bunch of hardcore bands in an environment I feel much more comfortable in.

Once I've selected the pictures to send to my employer I will post some here. Also, I'll probably writing a more comprehensive review of the festival for IMUR...

Addendum -

For pictures from the festival click here.

Cause the magic is in the music and the music is in this dude, who joined thousands of enthusiastic revelers for the annual Capital Hill Block Party -- a celebration of the historic Seattle neighborhood with a thriving music and arts scene, and frankly just another reason to come out and let loose on a beautiful summer night.

Dag 3 was er eentje van stramme spieren. Heerlijke zon.

Quotering: ***

In the spirit of the fifty word fictions currently being posted by Chan over at A wild slim alien, here are some reviews of exactly that length – tips of the hat to my long-player listening so far this year. With the odd hand gesture or wrinkled nose thrown in.

The Shortwave Set – Replica sun machine

Seduced by the alethiometeresque cover, but disappointed by the frequency with which the wan, characterless vocals of Andrew Pettitt displace the considerably more elegant singing of Ulrika Bjornse. Danger Mouse production? Check. Van Dyke Parks string arrangements? Check. Tunes? Mostly. ‘Glitches ‘n’ bugs’, ‘Distant daze’ and ‘No social’ stand out.

Elbow – The seldom seen kid

In the last couple of years Elbow’s records have been surreptitiously stealing their way to the centre of my listening world. This confirms their place there with its high musicality and wry humour. Guy Garvey’s songs are lugubrious and beautiful, even managing to reanimate the corny image of the mirrorball.

DeVotchKa – A mad and faithful telling

Romany Mexican indie with Greek or Klezmer undertones, anyone? Not forgetting occasional forays into chamber and oompah band territories? Singer Nick Urata looks like a roughed-up cross between Clooney and Morrissey. One song – ‘The clockwise witness’ – is truly great, throwing off excessive stylistic colouring for an affecting shade of blue.

Carl Craig – Sessions

How long it’s been since I was lost in niteklub rhythm. For all that Craig is a master of dancefloor dynamics, Sessions ultimately feels relentless, at home or in car. It’s a relief when the end is near and the unpredictable rhythms of ‘Bug in the bass bin’ take hold.

Four Tet – Ringer

A river whose flow is as relentless as Sessions, but out of the current more is going on. I wish I had more time to relax into ‘Swimmer’’s patterns; fretted less about the time Kieran Hebden takes to develop his swirls and eddies. Moments of life that won’t come again.

Neon Neon – Stainless style

After the Rhys-Boom Bip collaboration on Blue eyed in the red room, and Gruff’s loveable Candylion, a disappointment. In evoking the worst aspects of the eighties, it’s loud, shiny, and as attractive as the boxy lines of the De Lorean car. But ‘I lust u’ achieves a Depeche Mode-esque melancholy.

Colin Meloy – Colin Meloy sings live

Just occasionally in these solo performances, Colin Meloy is one note short of a melody. Otherwise he conveys the best of the Decemberists – as well as Shirley Collins and the Smiths – with songwriter’s conviction, stand-up comedy and helpings of the ‘campfire singalong’ spirit that he declares he is aiming for.

The Last Shadow Puppets – The age of the understatement

The chief northern monkey and his best mate perform a Dukes of Stratosphearic take on Scott Walker (and indeed Brel through Scott’s distorting mirror); in their turtleneck sweaters they’re photo-fit go-getters. The result is a noirish existential beat group and the second of many reinventions Alex Turner may yet perform.

Goldfrapp – Seventh tree

I lost interest between Black cherry and the insistently decadent electro of Supernature. Fortunately the duo are aware of the benefits of reinvention and return; Seventh tree is closest in spirit to Felt mountain but with added folk sensibility and pop nous. ‘Little bird’ floats and ‘Caravan girl’ drives along.

British Sea Power – Do you like rock music?

Like Open season, this is eight-tenths of the way to greatness; if I were eighteen and at my first Glastonbury, I would wave my flag to it. But it’s as rock as the substance you’d mine were you to tunnel into Mount Blanc, and for me that remains a problem.

Paul Weller – 22 dreams

Press would have you believe that Weller has suddenly emerged from a lengthy spell in rock purgatory. Truth is he rediscovered his touch over the two preceding sets; you could not get more pastoral than ‘Pan’ on As is now. 22 dreams expands the lightness in familiar and fresh directions.

Portishead – Third

Top bombing from Barrow, Gibbons and Utley. The avant-garde attack of the electronics is reminiscent of New Order discovering synthesisers. Next time Portishead can worry less about making it impossible for anyone to countenance putting them on as dinner party listening; this is music with which to greet the apocalypse.

Robert Forster – The evangelist

The healing power of song – I’m so glad RF rediscovered it. But how could the tone be anything other than elegiac, with fragments of Grant’s last songs among Robert’s lyrical responses to his death. As we hear those last tunes, Robert sings ‘it was melody he loved most of all’.
