In the last year or so, I've read increasingly about faculty either trying or implementing Google Docs as an alternative to MS. Last month, Google added a bibliography tool and English faculty will be glad to see that it includes MLA, as well as APA, AMA, and Chicago. So here's another reason to give GDocs the ol' college try.

I have to admit that I've never quite understood the allure of Cory Kennedy, but I also have to admit that the "IT" kid is surpassing all expectations. Fresh from her job as the face of Sebastian, it seems that Cory has now been tapped to be the new face of Doc Martens. She replaces Daisy Lowe, who had the honors last season.

Well, I can't be right about everything.

By Justin Silverton

Documentation is a very important part of development. It will not only allow you to come back to an application or piece of code in the future with ease, but also help future coders (in the open source community or at your job, etc) that may be utilizing your source code.

A great tool that can be used for this is called phpDocumentor (or phpdoc) available here.

Features

output in HTML, PDF (directly), CHM (with windows help compiler), XML DocBook

web and command-line interface

fully customizable output with Smarty-based templates

recognizes JavaDoc-style documentation with special tags customized for PHP 4

generates a todo list from @todo tags in source

Installation

There are two different ways to install this. The first is to download the source directly and install it manually (found here). The second is to install it through the pear library. This can be done using the following command: “pear install PhpDocumentor”

To install phpDocumentor to use the web interface, you must first change one of PEAR’s configuration variables, data_dir, to be a sub-directory of your web server’s document root. The simplest way to do this is through PEAR’s command-line interface with the command: pear config-set data_dir /path/to/document_root/pear

Configuring this value through the web interface is also simple. Click on the configuration icon in the left-hand frame, and type in the path in the data_dir text box.

Usage

It’s fairly easy to start documenting your code. There are sample projects included that show some common usage (sample1.php, sample2.php, and sample3.php).

If you are using the command-line interface, run this command from the tutorials/sample directory:

phpdoc -o HTML:frames:earthli -f sample1.php -t docs (replace sample1.php with the file you want to process)

The rest of the available options can be found using: phpdoc -h

Full Docs can be found here

Nothing prompting that title, really; I'm just excited for the new Metallica album.

I was watching Project Runway reruns with dudeguy last night (I make him watch it with me) and the "design for the designers" episode was on. For those of you who don't watch (shame!), one of the designers was given the task of creating a look for another one of the designers inspired by the punk musical genre. Because dudeguy is a former punk rocker (because they never really get out of it), I knew he would find this episode ripe and ready for critique. I was right.

"Babe, is this punk rock?"

He was offended. Mostly because this look was very cliche and really had nothing to do with punk rock or what punk rockers did. I asked him what he would have done differently.

"Shit, I don't know. Probably glued pigeon feathers in his hair. This isn't punk. Punk is when you just do shit. Not because it's cool or you think it looks good. Like growing a mustache on the side of your face...or...or..."

He was overwhelmed with upset. My eyes started to glaze lightly. I've heard this tirade before and, while it is entertaining, I know where it's usually going to end up.

I may not know much about they actual style that o.g. punk rockers would approve of, but I did get something right.

"Now THOSE are punk rock."

Score one for me. Not that I was looking for points, but positive reinforcement is always nice.

Henley: American Eagle

Jeans: Forever 21

I created a simple survey using a google spreadsheet form. I found out that you must go through google docs, click on new and then spreadsheet. After creating a new spreadsheet I clicked on the tab called form. Once a form is up you simple click on the button that says create a form. After all of this it was very easy to create a survey form. You create a question and then you have many different choices of question type such as multiple choice, scale, and text. Once you are done creating your questions you can then email the survey out to anyone you would like to respond. Google Docs than accumulates the answers in spreadsheet form, as well as making a summary of responses (you can find this by going into more actions, edit form, and view responses). The google spreadsheet form is a very powerful tool that can be widely used in the classroom to help teachers understand what the students want, and how well students understand class material.

So, I spent a LOT of time yesterday - between my greying out (passing out?) and sleeping and severe pain - putting it all down on record, every detail of my visit and putting all my medical records into a binder and tabbies and everything. The whole bit.

I asked my hubby to please take it to work with him (he works for my Dr's Daddy... who is also a Dr.) for Dr. Max to look at.

Well, he didn't have time in the morning to look over them but I knew he'd get to it when he had a sec.

Well, his wife read it. She was Dr. Max's nurse for years and years until she retired. She got PISSED and got Dr. Max on the phone right away. She obviously called Dr. Lori as well. There's a time stamp on my paper from the hospital and Dr. Lori was IN THE HOSPITAL at that time!

The ER doc did standard procedure. I could have been one of "those" people. BUT~ I brought my medical records with me, I told them my doctor's name, I even told them how long it had been hurting, the descriptions were right off my Fibro pain scale!!! So, OK, the doc at the ER followed procedure. But I bet the next time I go there there will be a note in the computer that I am a Cheney patient and that I will be treated a WHOLE lot better.

So, I heard from my Dr. Lori's nurse this morning and she told me that Dr. Rubio is who Dr. Lori referred rheumy's to. OK, I had already checked him out on the net. When I check out a Doc I write down where they went to school, did their residency, internship, etc. So all of that is in my binder I sent to the Cheney's house this AM, too. As are my medical records, so there would be NO DOUBT that I am not a druggie. WOW! I feel SOOOO vindicated! I feel GREAT! I hurt like hell, I hurt like a some-
beach, but I feel so VINDICATED!

I also got a phone call late this afternoon and Dr. Lori wants me to be squeezed in on Thursday afternoon at 4:30. I had made my original appointment with her through the appointment desk and they could not get me in until the 14th of October. Now that she knows how much pain I am in I'm getting in sooner.!!!!! WOO!

Sunday morning.... EARLY EARLY.

I hurt so badly that I woke myself up crying. Didn't wake hubby with
my crying. Imagine that. He probably heard me and just ignored me.

I got there at 3:45 AM. Sunday. No one there. No waiting. Saw a
Dr. Quevillon, a woman. I'm crying the entire time i am there. She
asks me if i am on any antidepressants. I told her no except for
Elavil for my bladder. She starts telling me that i need to be on
Lyrica and Cymbalta and probably some other anti-depressant. I
informed her that I was on Wellbutrin for YEARS and hated being on
them, so with my Dr. Lori's help I weaned off them and felt great.
Well, then Dr. Sakr - ASSHOLE WHO I FIRED - put me on Cymbalta and
Lyrica and Ambien CR and Flexeril and Klonopin.

I told her all this crap made me feel BAD BAD BAD. Well, obviously
what i think does not matter.

SHe gave me a shot in my right arm of 60mg Toradol and 60mg in my
left arm of Norflex. Waited 30 minutes and I'm still crying but pain
is from 9-10 to 8-9. Well, she's considers her job done then and
gives me a 50 mg Ultram and an RX for 30 more. Poof. The GENIUS has
just solved world issues and breast cancer. Throw a parade.

I informed her that she didn't help me much and that i still HURT
BAD. She tells me that she can not prescribe me anything stronger
than my Lorcet 10/650. I only have 1/2 a pill left. I can get a
refill on Wednesday.

I plan on calling my normal GP on Monday and talking to her. I also
plan on writing a note to the hospital on the BAD treatment I got.

Seriously, we were out of there in LESS than an hour. But, then
again, I must be a druggie looking for a fix because I have
fibromyalgia. They even had the nerve to give me a sheet of
information on Fibro. Funny, I had my medical records there WITH ME
and all about fibro and so forth. I could have taught them
something. I think I will include several things in my letter, like
the Fibro pain scale, patients bill of rights, the great piece Debra
wrote.

I am so pissed. I so hurt. Can you tell????

Asus has found itself at the centre of a scandal for shipping rather more with its PCs than was perhaps intended.

According to PC Pro, amongst others, the company has managed to ship some rather embarrassing content on the recovery DVDs for certain models of laptop: a WinRAR keygen, serial codes for other commercial packages most definitely not included with the laptop, confidential documents from Microsoft – including a hush-hush guide on how to deactivate Windows Vista ready for shipping to an end user - designed for system builders use only, and internal documents from Asus itself. The latter collection includes, incredibly, source code to several Asus software packages.

The discs appear to have made their way around the world, with customers from the UK, US, and Australia reporting bizarre contamination of their recovery software. A poster on the APC Magazine forums has even posted a screenshot of some of the files – including the resume of what is presumably an Asus employee close to the source of the gaffe.

Asus has issued an apology for the mess, and has promised to look into the issue “at quite a high level.” The company also wishes to ensure customers that once the investigation is complete, steps will be taken to ensure that such a thing never occurs again.

Quite how the files – which, key generator notwithstanding, appear to be the contents of someone's home directory – ended up on a recovery disc that should, in theory, have been checked and tested several times before being shipped is still unknown. For its part, Asus is refusing to speculate.

Have you ever received any added extras when purchasing a PC, or can you only dream of the day when your laptop comes with a copy of some stranger's CV? Share your experiences over in the forums.

While I was starting up the process again of cleaning up my computer, realizing I'd have to create a folder system for all the files on my computer (including word, image, programs and PDF files), I had a thought...

What if there was an "iTunes" for images (not just photos, but images in general, anything ending in ".jpg" or ".gif")?
What if there was an "iTunes" for user files of ALL types? (By user files, I mean anything directly accessible by users; photos downloaded from the internet, PowerPoint presentations of the business's next big project, or word documents of the homework assignment that's due tomorrow).

By this I mean a system that can helps you organize, rate, and aggregate (I think that's my new word =P) files on your computer into one space.

I think something that could even be BETTER than this is this application not downloaded to your computer, but online, where you upload your files and files of unorganized MESS, and either have an auto-sort go through and organize everything into filetypes and lets you organize further, or gives you a intuitive interface to organize everything yourself, from one screen.

Maybe operating systems themselves will become closer to this in the future. Either that or we'll move more towards cloud computing, where everything is stored online (like Google Docs--storing Microsoft Office-like files online, editing and sharing them instantly with anyone.)

Well, I lost it again this afternoon. I just hurt so badly and I feel like no one cares at all. I almost went to the ER again. It was THAT bad. The kids got most of it this time. Em did a half assed job of bringing in a crate from outside. Then the stuff she had to move she just left in the middle of the floor and walked away. So I picked it all up - 2 HEAVY boxes of fabric and a HEAVY box of school supplies. All the time hollering at her "Thanks A LOT Emilee, I'll handle this myself". Then Justin was on the internet as soon as he got home from school. He ate a snack. Then he fed dogs, only because I told him to. Then he ate dinner, and started homework. He did not do his chores! All he has to do is feed the outside cats and feed and water his rabbit! He did NEITHER! I fed the cats. I even hollered LOUDLY "Oh, I'll FEED THE CATS FOR YOUR JUSTIN!" No response. Then I fed the rabbit. Again, NO response. The rabbit water was DRY and so I hollered that I'd water him, too, since he had NONE. Well, my hubby says "WHY don't you make him do it?" Uh! Well, I was HOPING Justin would get a clue and get off his ass and do his chores!!!!! I am so mad. I went into the kids room. Em is listening to the radio jacking around with her Spanish dictionary. Justin is doing homework on his bed. I really let them BOTH have it. I told them that they must not care at all about me or the fact that I am in GREAT pain and almost went to the hospital for the pain today. I told them that they had NO idea how badly I hurt. It's not like I am being mean because it's FUN! I am mean because I hurt! And I told them they obviously don't give a fuck that Mom hurts! Yes, I let an F Bomb fly. Get over it.

I then went and laid down in bed for about 30 minutes and cried and cried. I just HURT HURT HURT HURT HURT!!!

28 more days until I can see my doc and get a referral to see the rheumatologist in Springfield. No telling how fucking long I'll have to wait for that appointment! I can't do this anymore. I hurt and no one cares. No one will help me. No one even fucking cares!!!!!!!!!

NO ONE!!!!!

NO ONE FUCKING CARES THAT MY PAIN LEVEL IS SEVERE!!!!!

Just when we think .. “okay.. Google cant get bigger than this”, Google actually does ge

Just when we think .. "okay.. Google cant get bigger than this", Google actually does get bigger! Now with its beta release of the new internet browser Google Chrome. Based on Apple's Open source development kit - webkit. What possible reasons you might wonder for google's entry into this space. Google is actively trying to reach out in every space thats got anything to do with internet, browsing, experience.. etc

One prime reason is obviously to provide better, enhanced web experience and the other should be revenues which is surely through advertising.

I remember watching an interview of Bill Gates on NDTV in which is says

a new company comes up that people say that now is the end of microsoft.. and everytime we rise and say.. nope, not this time.. it seems this time its google.

Amm.. Microsoft is doing great everywhere.. but its getting asskicked by google when you talk abt internet!.

Lets take a look at what spaces Google's Covered :

Publishing ads on websites: well known leader : Adwords & Adsense

Internet Search Engine : Google practically dictates terms in area. Webmasters often steer their websites considering and applying all features that help its rankings in Google search. Ads are displayed here too!

There are 2 sources of internet browsing these days : Personal Computers and Mobiles.

Personal Computers: with the launch of google Chrome, with its new commendable features like "desktop shortcuts" googles gonna probably give a rough time to Firefox. We should expect google in incorporate some sort of its advertising in future versions.. by which I dont mean adding ads in the browser itself, but making it more accessible to them..

MOBILES: ANDROID! nuff said! .. Google will start generating revenues from this in no time! Ads make all the difference

Google Services like Google-analytics and Google Apps have been received well by most webmasters with prominent websites like facebook, wordpress availing it. Google Apps - Google Docs and GMAIL have started some unique services for corporates, schools handling important operations of creating documents, editing, storage etc..

Picasa : the Photo storage site

Orkut : social networking site which is very very popular in Asia.

Now ... CONSOLIDATION is the word that describes this. Google, by providing better webbased services and enhanced experience, is slowly eliminating the need for an Operating System with software which we couldnt live without before!

Can anyone come up with an internet area that Google hasent crawled yet?? leave a comment
