Autumn is here and I am a happy girl. At the moment I am sitting in b’s parent’s house.

Autumn is here and I am a happy girl. At the moment I am sitting in b's parent's house. we are far enough out of town that the evening sky is clear enough, even in the darkness, that I can see the trees.

I am gazing out the window at the burnt leaves in a field across from the garden and I can smell the butternut squash mash that the boy is cooking me along with his yummy-in-my-tummy three bean. . .

it is cold enough for mittens and hats. This fact warms my heart. It is time to start staying at home ALWAYS instead of just MOST of the time.

There will be cooking of the season's ware and hopefully alot more cinnamon in our meals.
Today I spent my lunch-time thrifting. I have been trying to find a black-board for so, so long now. I have been in and out of toy-shops with no luck. To make matters worse, my favourite charity shop has two really beautiful, old-fashioned boards that I would die to have above my table. But let's just say I struck gold today. The very charity shop which has my favourite boards displaying - ' children's clothes, £ 1 ' and 'books on special offer' had a board on sale today! For a pound! The joy I felt was deep and pure. Hehehehe. So that was the start of my treasure trail. I then made my way up to the Ulster Cancer Foundation shop and within one minute had clapped eyes on a retro, Sacndanavian style bedside locker which hadn't even been priced yet. It was identical to one I fell head over heels in love with in Stockholm in the Spring. Seeing it sent me back to Södermalm, with its cafe bars and vintage stores cooler than anything I have ever experienced before. To hot chocolates alone while reading Swedish interior design books and writing in my own Journal. To Cafe Lola and the amazing goat's cheese salad and strawberry smoothie. And to the desire to change my life for the better that Stockholm placed in my heart. The one I had to be coaxed into leaving Sweden without was 3oo Euro. The one in my charity shop today was £4. . . Naturally I sped to the counter with it so it could be held safely whilst I trawled the room for any other goodies to be had for under my tenner budget for the outing.

And what else did I find but a wonderful lace table-cloth with wee embroidered flowers. . .yes, you've guessed it, a pound! But I have to say the icing on the fairy-bun was a really old doll cover for a hot water bottle which will be being added to my display cabinet the second I get home tonight. If I told you the price you wouldn't believe me. . . . .

Dear Autumn and thrifting,

Could you please stay?

Thanks kindly,

So, I asked my friend Akaa if he had advice on some manga to read online while I'm not at home, like I'm not right now, and he said to read Doubt and Dolls, so now I do. I haven't read Dolls yet, but I have read the first chapter of Doubt and I was like "OMFGNOWHATISTHISNOO!?!??1one" almost the entire time. The intro was something, I don't know what (and the bunny heads scare me a little bit), and the end of the chapter started to look like a Saw scenario. I never watched any Saw movie to the end though as I thought the idea was kind of gross and just plainly moronic, but I am not going to stop with Doubt - maybe I've finally found a horror manga that I want to read? :D

Now I have to help making a dinner schedule and then it's back to reading Doubt (in secrecy, I'm not allowed to view that kind of stuff on this computer) and then Dolls. See you!

EDIT: Now I've finished all fifteen chapters that are out so far. Does anybody know how long this series is going to continue? How many chapters there's left, that is.

David and I figure if we ever get behind on Anthony's laundry we can just raid the toy box and use some doll clothes on him. I wanted to put one of the outfits on him to amuse myself, but opted against it since changing clothes makes him pretty upset and I couldn't justify torturing him for my own personal amusement.

I had to navigate a number of Japanese sites (despite the fact that my computer doesn't read Japanese characters) to track down a little gallery of Mari Shimizu's work.

Her doll creations are phenomenal. Ethereal, haunting, beautiful, unsettling...some expressing powerful emotion, others transfixed in a lifeless plastic stare that uncomfortably juxtaposes their lavish surroundings.

The photography techniques add much to the display of her projects. She seems to carefully choose the lighting and tone, whether a warm glow or harsh blinding daylight, creating an effect that's almost cinematic.

Highly recommended if you enjoy this type of craft.

This doll is a fairly common find for Alice in Wonderland fans. My friend bought it for me from K-Mart. It cost about twenty dollars. It's called the "Little Alice Doll." She comes with accessories such as a small cheshire cat, a brush, and a miniature tea set. I admit, the big eyes are a little creepy but as long as I don't have to wake up to it in the morning, it's okay. It's still a good find :)

My eldest son and his wife and Madeline came over for dinner last Sunday evening...and the pink is coming soon. Before I left Marc's I gathered up a few dried branches nd sprayed them black...and I had had looked for a black crow most of the weekend too, with no luck. On the way home I found one at Michaels and I glued on some little ghosts and bats. Its not looking as great as it really is...and those of you who's idea I have
"copycatted" know how neat it really is.

Beverley at HowSweetTheSound is hosting Pink Saturday. Today I have some pink to share with you also. First I wanted to share Madeline's pink outfit with you. Turning this way to show off her pink and brown plaid (I love those colours together) and her little pink jacket my mom had bought for her. She is always dressed so nicely and she loves clothes. She's only 4 but has always been this way and she's also very feisty and athletic and loves to climb and hang off everything at the park.

Now I know I've been slipping my pictures from last weekend's Hilton Apple Festival into posts since then but I did save some pink too. One of the vendors had made these cute pink swinging dolls and beside her was a vendor that alll kinds of pink cuties in her tent. This is a sampling of the pinks Truly a pink person's place both young and old. Now be sure to click back to Beverley's to see all the other pink goodies for Pink Saturday.

ok I should write this today huh? haha

ROZEN MAIDEN numba 2

These books are so crazy! ~ Now there is a second doll Hinaichigo who is living with a girl named Tomoe. She tells Shinku that the alice games are about to begin! But during this time Jun has become distant from the world, speaking to no one and reluctant to even get out of bed...

Hinainchigo however seems to be a much different kind of doll and takes control over her master pulling her into the mirror world! Do not fret however for it is SHINKU TO THE RESCUE!!~

This leads to a fight between the two! Fights with toys and name calling :) In the end Hinaichigo comes to live at Jun's house and Nori is happy to have another cute doll living with them!

Jun however is NOT pleased to have two dolls in the house now...There is also another mini battle with Suigitoh but it doesn't really have a good or bad outcome.

There are alot of funny little side things that happen in between the fighting just like in the first book.

Then ANOTHER doll is introduced: Suiseiseki (my favorite!!~) You learn that she has a twin who has been kidnapped and she needs help getting her back!

Many parents call the hour or so before dinner “the witching hour”. You know what I

Many parents call the hour or so before dinner "the witching hour". You know what I'm talking about...between the hours of 4:00 - 6:00 pm when you are trying to fix dinner and your children are whiney, erratic and inconsolable. Sound familiar?

I once read a good article that advised parents to reserve a specific activity for children to do during that time. For example, if you allow your children to watch a limited amount of television, let them watch a couple of short programs. Or play a computer game. Or paint. Or play with a specific toy. The key is to only let your children perform that specific activity during that exclusive timeframe so that it seems special.

We started this strategy with our daughter when she was 2 and it worked. As long as we stuck to the routine, the witching hour became less haunting (and daunting). She was happier and so were we. An additional word of advice, however, is to change the activity every month or so. Currently popular in our house is a Dress Up Princess website that I found. It is great for girls 4+ who are somewhat savvy with a computer mouse (they need to know how to use the mouse to click on and hold the clothing as they move it to the doll). The site has a lot of dress up collections and is relatively ad-free. If you have a little princess in your house, give it try!

And if you are looking for ways to introduce your toddlers to computers, please check out Imagine Tomorrow and look for classes in your neck of the enchanted forest.

Really, what’s not to like? In a Japanese cro

Needled reviews:
Mai Tomangi, Wool, 100% (2006)

Really, what's not to like? In a Japanese cross between Bagpuss and the Wombles, two elderly sisters, armed with pokey sticks and shopping trolleys, collect furniture, toys, and other discarded items from surburban rubbish bins. Their house totters and teeters under the weight of their gathered spoils, and their bodies beat time to the tick of a thousand pilfered clocks. This world of lost memories and found objects is invaded by the destructive, succubus-like presence of a girl they call "Knit-Again." The name is an apt one, for she is wearing a tatty, badly knitted, chunky red sweater that looks like it might have been designed by Twinkle. But her work is incomplete: the girl labours away at the sweater frantically until her blood-red wool runs out. Only then does she notice what a terrible job she's made of the knitting: "Damn!" she wails, brandishing her needles, "I have to knit it all over again."

Starring Ayu Kitaura, Kazuko Yoshiyuki and the wonderful Kyôko Kishida (of Woman in the Dunes fame) Mai Tominaga's debut feature is strange, unsettling, and very, very witty. Combining elements of fairy-tales and dream work, as well as puppetry and animation, Wool 100% is an incredibly powerful meditation on desire, loss and the secret life of things. It is also, of course, a must-see for every knitter.

(No time for food. There's knitting to be done)

The girl's red sweater is full of meaning. The rhythms of it's knitting match those of the female body through menstruation, childbirth and death. Knitting sublimates sexual desire ("If you knit, a baby will come" one sister tells another, looking with hate and longing at a young man outside their window). And, for the two sisters, who are forced to confront the story of their youth as the plot unravels, knitting also literalises the work of memory, showing how much the past is something that we are constantly making and re-making, in a daily effort of stitching and piecing together. The blood-red yarn is menacing, murderous, and also a figure for the discontinuous narrative thread of the film itself. I was strongly reminded of Takeshi Kitano's Dolls, in which guilt, trauma, and narrative memory are similarly suggested in the long red cord by which an unfaithful lover drags his suicidal beloved through eternity.

(Takeshi Kitano, Dolls, 2002)

Dolls figure importantly in Wool 100%, too, as do several other kinds of inanimate objects which might, at any moment, spring to life. The objects the sisters collect are living presences: as they catalogue and care for the things that other people throw away, so these things, in their turn, seem to watch over and care for them. Their cuckoo clock chimes to cheer their morning repast; a futon snores and shudders as it envelops its silent sleeper. At the beginning of the film, a group of children sing a song for the two sisters: a neat, suggestive fable that sounds like something straight out of Blake's Songs of Experience. A sheep sneezes, and an apple falls from a tree: "it is now the sheep's apple," sing the children. But, after the sheep munches the apple, it becomes part apple itself, "it is now the apple's sheep" the song concludes. The subject ends up being possessed by the object it incorporates, just as the sisters are ultimately owned by their things.

(doll-things)

Much of Wool 100% seems to be about finding the appropriate process to deal with things and the memories they embody: to engage with them, to confront them, and ultimately to discard them (there is much funereal burning in the film: painful and theraputic in turns). And the film definitely suggests that there is something more than a little pathological in the repetitive, relentless activities of both knitting and object-collecting (the knitting will never be finished; the collection will never be complete). "Sleep tight," says the sweater-wearing succubus to the two sisters, before her final destructive act, "when you awake, you'll have to knit it all over again." Hell, we all know that feeling.

Wool 100% is available on DVD (but only as a region 1 DVD, those in the UK take note)

Well...I would guess most parents don't intend on having children who will be jerks, but I just wonder how parents can let some behavior go unchallenged. Recently my 3 year old has taken to this little baby doll. He calls it "Baby Ga Ga". Baby Ga Ga is not a boy OR a girl, apparently. But, Baby Ga Ga goes everywhere with the 3 year old, including bed, the store, the library, to pick his brother up from school, etc. Anyway...the other day we went into a local craft store and Baby Ga Ga was in tow. We were in the children's craft section and another little boy, who was at least 5 and potentially older (I have a hard time judging the ages of kids between 5 and 10 for some reason), walks up to the 3 year old and says, "Boys aren't supposed to play with dolls! That's really dumb that you have a doll." The poor 3 year old, he just looked up at me for direction and I could see he was considering whether or not to start crying. The other boy's mother was right there and just looked at me. So, I said, "Well, there is no reason why he can't play with a doll. I think it's great that he loves this baby so much."

The fact that he seemed a bit cowed by the fact that I even responded makes me think that he may have been trying to get SOMEONE to set some limits for his behavior, I don't know. I was a little irritated that I was the one that had to do it for someone else's kid. It also made me sad that my little guy had to have the little hit to his self-esteem. Then, as we were leaving the store, my older son (who's 5) said, "Mommy? Is brother naughty for playing with a doll?" I explained absolutely not, that it was OK for them to play with whatever toy they wanted as long as it was safe and they weren't hurting anyone else by playing with it. He seemed OK with the answer. It was just disappointing because that was not how I expected a fun trip to get some craft supplies for them to end.

Earlier today, I read about a Fisher Price doll, the Cuddle and Coo doll. A parent heard the doll say "Islam is the light." Seriously.

I thought that she must have just misheard the doll or might even be making the whole thing up so I went to see for myself.

It's true. It certainly sounds like the doll says "Islam is the light." I was still skeptical but crazybengal has heard it as well. The doll mostly just babbles or says 'mama' so a sing songy phrase is unusual and I can't think of anything else that the doll might be saying. It certainly seems that the statement "Islam is the light" was intentionally installed on the dolls. By whom, I can't even begin to guess. The dolls were made in China. There are Chinese Muslims.

So far, nothing on the Fisher Price website. Some stores are pulling the doll after customer complaints but others are just offering refunds.

By the way, if you watch the original news report about the doll, this is not about hate and the doll doesn't say anything that sounds like "Satan is king." Exaggerating the problem doesn't help. The issue is that the doll is promoting a religion. No thanks.

Are they recurring dreams about licorice candy? I wish.

Are they recurring dreams about licorice candy? I wish.

I mean I really do wish those were the kinds of dreams I had...yummy!

But no, the name was one I selected when I was in high school (about 20 years ago) for my (then) future clothing design business. I did love eating candy, especially black licorice and Red Vines. I've had to give up a lot of foods though in the intervening years, and even if I could eat candy, it is really not in the grocery budget at this time.

I started eating less sugary foods, foods without white flour, with less salt and mostly organic about 2 years ago on the advice of a neighbor who has Fibromyalgia. I had IBS - which is irritable bowel syndrome and if you have no experience with it - yes, it is as disgusting as it sounds. It's also quite painful, but none of my previous dietary changes had produced any major improvements in my symptoms and I basically thought I would live with it forever. I never got used to the pain, but I would come to expect it and I learned to handle it and move on. Having IBS though meant trying to stay near a bathroom as much as possible - especially after meals. Everyone can eat healthier these days though. It's just easier now than it was even 5 years ago. It's still more expensive than eating unhealthy, but probably worth it in the long run and definitely worth it in the short run for me, as my IBS symptoms have abated for the most part and an episode of it is extremely rare. It means freedoms for me that I had never dreamed to have.

Of course, since I don't work outside the home and with gas prices on the rise, that newly regained freedom meant nothing, since I didn't really have anywhere to go and couldn't justify the expense if I did decide to go places. But again, being more or less confined to home is different than it used to be. I spend most of my time on the computer, on the internet specifically, and since I have a small eBay business, and here I will engage in a little self-promotion, which is after all the point of any blog, right? My website - www.kismet1990design.com - has nothing whatsoever to do with the types of things I am going to be writing about in this blog and in fact, it has it's own jewelry themed blog. I sell handmade doll jewelry. Yes, you read correctly, jewelry for dolls. Dolls like Barbie, Silkstone Barbie, Jason Wu Fashion Royalty and other Integrity dolls, Tonner dolls like Tyler Wentworth, Esme, Jac, Ellowyne Wilde and even Madame Alexander dolls like Alexandra Fairchild Ford. If you are a doll collector or just interested in knowing what the website could possibly be about, please visit it!

I'm generally a private person, so I'm not sure why I want to blog - especially about topics unrelated to my "business". However, within the last few years I have worried more and more about becoming obscure. I already have a MySpace page, thanks to my niece - who was named after me, by the way - and now it is almost the sole means of keeping up to date with certain family members. I am also on Facebook, which has been a double-edged sword. I have been able to find former classmates I have been searching for, but I have also attracted the interest of others who are unfortunately more into me than I am into them. I want to be friends because I think it is fascinating to be in touch with people all over the world - like my dream when I was young of having pen pals in other parts of the world - but I guess being "just friends" is hard to do.

My first blog entry was completely different from this one, but I decided this morning that I wanted every title to be a question. My goal with the blog was to give my answer to that question, but of course those commenting on the blog are welcome to give their own answer based on their own interpretation of the question. I don't know if anyone will find my blog interesting...though I am into organizing, like scrapbooking and other crafts, and have interesting family members, so I can blog on lots of interesting and perhaps "blog relevant" topics.

For instance...speaking of clothing design company names. Has anyone heard of The Hundreds? I clicked on a homepage headline and came across an Inc. magazine story about fascinating entrepeneurs under the age of 30. The two co-founders of The Hundreds were listed. This intrigued me since their clothing brand was a skateboarding brand and my nephew, Christopher, is a skateboarder and an artist. I wondered if he could have the same type of success if he put his artwork onto clothing. I gave the suggestion to my sister. But he's only 15, so I suppose he has plenty of time to start his own company. I used to be interested in skateboarding - well, more particularly, skateboarders - back when I was in high school. I used to have a subscription to Thrasher magazine and my husband and I (we graduated the same year from the same high school) have been continually fascinated at the success of Tony Hawk...since he is of our generation and our parents always told us that skateboarders wouldn't amount to much. Hmmm...not too much, only amounting to being worth several million dollars! (I didn't check the amount exactly, so if you know it, feel free to comment.)

So I guess what licorice dreams are - is they are big dreams. Grand dreams! At least my Licorice Dreams clothing design business was a grand dream and might have been a grand success if I hadn't been eager to leave Stockton, California and then discovered that living with a boyfriend you had only known for 6 months and paying bills was a lot more stressful and demanding than I had imagined. I had to set aside college and world traveling for financial reasons and for compromise in my relationship. That boyfriend is now my husband of 12 years, meaning we have been together in total for 18 years. So I guess the sacrifices were worth it, though I have not only had to give up Licorice Dreams, but also real licorice. We sacrifice for love and I don't think I would ever trade my time with Michael for any amount of financial success...but I still crave some personal success and so Kismet1990 Design was born a year ago. Quite by accident, which is how most things seems to happen, but there is a meaning behind that name as well.

You might ask why I didn't just name the doll jewelry business Licorice Dreams, since I had loved the name and it could work as well for one business as another but Kismet1990 is something special. Kismet is Turkish for "fate" and 1990 was the year my husband and I started dating and also the year we graduated high school. So I named my company for the a more signifcant licorice dream - a very personal one, only a private success, but still an ongoing success.
