A Microsoft passou a permitir aos fabricantes de computadores, a opção de downgrade para o Windows XP  Professional em todas as máquinas com o Vista como sistema operativo principal. Este tipo de downgrade só está disponível às versões Vista Business e Ultimate e será uma opção a ter em conta (ou não) por parte dos fabricantes. A opção será integralmente deles.

Com isto, a Microsoft assume claramente que o Windows Vista é realmente um fracasso...

Now with Office 2007, you need to purchase the Office Multi Language Pack via Volume Licensing (around £75).

If you need to downgrade to Office 2003, then you are entitled to downgrade the MUI pack too.

In the latest indication that Windows Vista's not one of Redmond's greatest hits, Windows XP (aka "The operating system that will not die") has won another reprieve. Friday, Microsoft confirmed rumors that OEMs bundling Windows Vista Ultimate or Vista Business can continue to order media for downgrades to Windows XP Professional until July 31, 2009 . Meaning, for those paying attention, that Harry Potter could get a Vista system downgraded to Windows XP for his birthday. Previously, the last day for downgrade media was going to be January 31, 2009. 1-31-2009 remains the deadline for system builders (aka "the corner computer store") to buy Windows XP licenses for their systems.

As an OEM product, Windows XP won't quite make it to Windows 7's anticipated release date of January 2010, but it will get closer than anyone could have guessed when it was released in October 2001.

Einige große PC-Hersteller (OEMs) nutzen dieses Downgrade-Recht jedoch und liefern ihre PC nicht nur mit Vista, sondern auch XP-Recovery-Medien aus, mit denen der Käufer das Downgrade, sofern es der Hersteller nicht bereits durchgeführt hat, selbst nachholen kann. Dieses Vorgehen ist von Microsoft abgesegnet, war jedoch ursprünglich bis Ende Januar 2009 limitiert. Vorteil für Microsoft: Obwohl der Kunde in diesem Fall weiter auf XP setzt, geht der Zähler für verkaufte Vista-Lizenzen herauf. Microsofts Jubel über 180 Millionen verkaufte Vista-Lizenzen ist folglich mit Vorsicht zu genießen, denn über die Anzahl der tatsächlich installierten Vista-Lizenzen sagen die Verkaufszahlen nichts aus.

Nicht betroffen von der Fristverlängerung sind auch die Hersteller von Netbooks und Nettops, die Windows XP bis noch bis zum Juni 2010 oder bis zu einem Jahr nach der Vorstellung der kommenden Windows-Version 7 auf ihren Rechner installieren dürfen – allerdings nur die Home-Version und auch die nur, sofern das Gerät maximal über eine 160 GByte große Festplatte (ursprünglich 80) und ein 10,2 Zoll großes Display verfügt.

At first, I thought this downgrade applied only to people buying the game from the announcement date forward, but I recently got an email from Amazon.com, where I pre-ordered my copy. The purpose of the email was to notify me that I would also be getting the downgraded version of the Fable 2 Limited Edition. So, if you were like me and thought that this announcement didn't apply to you, it does. It's unfortunate that that so many extras had to be taken away. However, the Limited Edition still contains:

• Fable II
• Bonus DVD with new 'Making-of Feature'
• Bonus In-Game Content Including the "Hall of the Dead" dungeon, "The Wreckager" Legendary Cutlass Weapon, and Spartan Armor and Energy Sword.

At least all the in-game bonus content hasn't been cut. Furthermore, a collection of Fable music will be available for download on October 6th to make up for this downgrade. To get this music, go to Sumthing Digital and enter the code FableCollection. Again, this code will begin to work on October 6th at 9 am PST.

Ma partiamo con ordine.

Il mio stupendo, bellissimo, insostituibile (e costosissimo)  IBook G4 12" 1,2 GHz Apple MacOsX 10.4 e trappole varie è morto.

Mi ha accompagnato per oltre quattro anni nelle traversie della mia vita,  non c'è più.

Dopo aver deciso di friggere il suo inverter durante un viaggio in Alto Adige, il costosissimo portatile dal design californiano ha concluso che anche il suo Hard Disk da 30 Gigabyte aveva vissuto abbastanza.

Così, dopo aver iniziato ad emettere un gemito sottile alla vigilia del mio compleanno, ha affondato definitivamente, trascinando con se 18 Giga di preziosissimi dati personali, poche ore dopo l'acquisto di un hard disk esterno per tentare l'estremo backup.  [aggiungere bestemmie]

Ora ho un costoso soprammobile della Apple.

Dopo alcuni giorni, trascorsi tra atroci sofferenze, sono giunto alla conclusione che non sarei potuto sopravvivere senza una macchina connessa ad Internet, appoggiandomi ora ai Pc ultra occupati della biblioteca, ora al Pc della mia ragazza, ora al portatile (lentissimo e puzzolente) della mia coinquilina.

La mia vita lavorativa (e non) si svolge sul Pc, mail, iscrizioni agli esami, film nelle sale, programmi tv, riassuntini degli esami, faccio tutto sulla macchina.

Così ho deciso di comprarmi un bel Desktop della Packard Bell.

"Prestazioni base", per così dire, al minor prezzo sul mercato, 350 euro, monitor escluso.

Per un Intel Dual Core da 2,2 GHz, 3 Giga di Ram, un Hard Disk da 320 Giga e una Nvidia GeForce 8400 con 256 kappa, non ci ho pensato due volte!

Ed ecco che arriva la nota dolente.

Che sistema operativo avrà mai installato?

E che vincoletti mi impongono a mantenerlo salvo la perdita inderogabile della garanzia?

E che succederebbe se, una volta formattato, volessi ripristinare il sistema, visto che non mi è stato fornito alcun dvd?!

Diciamocelo chiaramente, non serve un mago del computer per capire che Vista è pesantissimo, consuma un sacco di risorse, è pieno di inutility, per non parlare degli aggiornamenti ingombranti ed inutili (63 MegaByte per aggiungere parole al dizionario in tedesco??? WTF?), dei messaggi di avviso ridondanti e delle protezioni alla sicurezza che fanno un baffo agli hacker ma che rendono scomodo l'utilizzo all'utente (un controsenso!).

Leggo inoltre che la mia versione non ha i requisiti necessari al downgrade legale a XP e, ove li avesse, la mia macchina potrebbe incontrare delle difficoltà nel funzionamento, visto che tutti gli aggiornamenti per l'hardware che monta sono legati al pesantissssimo sistema operativo.

Mi sento stuprato nell'anima da questo monopolio della casa Microsoft.

Voglio essere libero di installare Ubuntu senza che il mio Packard Bell si intristisca.

Mi informerò a riguardo.

Intanto segnalo che è possibile richiedere un rimborso per chi non gradisse il software che trova installato in fabbrica sulla macchina che ha acquistato.

L'ADUC ha portato avanti (e ha vinto) nel novembre 2005 una causa per un PC notebook con preinstallato Windows XP Home Edition.

Per chi volesse cimentarsi nel farsi rimbosare dalle case produttrici i lcosto del software, intanto buona fortuna, poi il consiglio di non accendere la macchina, perché utilizzando anche solo per una volta il sistema si accettano implicitamente i termini contrattuali e non è più possibile dichiarare di non volerlo, ed infine ecco il link alla pagina informativa della ADUC, con relativo modulo di richieste rimborso da inviare alla casa produttrice.

E proprio mentre fervevano i preparativi per l’imminente scomparsa di XP, ecco che arriva un’altra smentita. Windows Xp sarà disponibile fino al 31 Luglio 2009. Ma attenzione, ciò non vuol dire che potrete acquistarlo tranquillamente nei negozi, ma che sarà fornito solo con l’acquisto di un Pc nuovo o attraverso il downgrade da Vista.

Darüber hinaus sollen OEM-Partner derzeit auf Microsoft einwirken, um ihren Kunden die Umstiegsoption auch über diesen Termin hinaus anbieten zu können. Ziel sei es, PC-Benutzern die Möglichkeit zu geben, Vista auszulassen und von XP direkt auf das kommende Windows 7 umzusteigen, von dem eine erste Beta-Version möglicherweise im Dezember erscheint.

Licensing Downgrades:

Can I use a previous version? If so what version? The curretn downgrade rights allow you to downgrade from V12.5 back to 11d. If you need to add new servers/agents/options to an older environment you will have to upgrade to V12.5.

If you purchase your licences with support, that will give you Version Upgrade Protection, enabling y ou to always keep up to date with new releases.

Backwards Compatibilty:

• As has been the case before, the new features of V12.5 will not work if the agent is put in to an older environment (12, 11d etc)

For those of you out there that are running Linux servers, the Remote Media Server Agent for Linux should be of interest. This means you can now add direct attached storage (DAS) to your remote Linux servers (the agent include a Linux Remote Agent too).

Microsoft Small Business Server 2008: As you may know,  SBS 2008 is now licensed by Microsoft to include a 2nd "Member Server" that can be used as part of the SBS 2008 Premium family to host SBS-included applications such as SQL 2008, Exchange, or SharePoint. Backup Exec 12.5 Small Business Server Premium will now include, at no charge, an Agent for Windows System (AWS) for customers who may want to protect this second sever as well.

What versions can I upgrade from?:

This is often the trickiest part of moving to a new version of software, if your current environment isn't 100% standardised on one version.

From a technical standpoint, versions 11d & 12 can be directly upgraded to 12.5, while any previous versions must be un-installed prior to 12.5 installation.

From a licensing standpoint, you are still eligible to upgrade ANY previous version of Backup Exec.

Hindsight is 20/20, and looking back to last night, there was a clear signal the bill wasn’t going to pass: after an initial positive response, the Asian markets began to slide into red.  Real money movers always know things ahead of time, and the Asian markets’ slip was a sure signal that our bill was not going to pass. I should have seen it, and maybe subconsciously I did, but it seemed too unbelievable that the bailout would not pass given its enormity and all the long days and weekends Congress had put into it.  But as we’ve seen with IndyMac, Fannie and Freddie, and Washington Mutual, nothing is too big to fail. 

Lawmakers are headed back to the drawing board to draft up a new version of the plan, but won’t meet again until Wednesday because tomorrow is Rosh Hashanah.

I’m more of an observer now than an active player.  I’m in too deep to do anything except wait, so all I can really focus on is the day to day with the stocks I own and the stocks that those stocks are absorbing.  Citigroup (C) bought Wachovia (WB) today for $2.2 billion, or $1 per share. 

Two funny computer errors happened today: Thornburg Mortgage (TMA) put through a 10:1 reverse stock split this morning, but not before they multiplied the share price by 10.  So during today’s premarket, it looked like I had 3K extra in my account!  But the quirk was soon fixed and so was the overinflated share price.  By close, TMA was down to $1.15, which would have been 11.5 cents on Friday before the reverse split.  To buy back the preferred shares, Thornburg needs to raise more capital.  You're welcome, TMA.   

Another blip came to Wachovia’s share price today.  At one point, it listed on Google finance at $500!  Message boarders were going nuts, and that error put the financial sector up 7% and made it look like the only sector in the green.  But that error was also soon fixed, and everyone who owns WB fell back into reality. 

One last computer oddity happened at the New York Stock Exchange today: because of a glitch, the morning bell never rang.  Mary Caraccioli said she’s never seen that happen.

People are still sweating a Moody’s downgrade to Ambac (ABK).  I really hope not.  Of all problems that could happen, that one tops my concern.  Just about a month ago, I was up over 100% on ABK and now I’m in the red.  If a Moody’s downgrade comes, it’ll destroy Ambac, especially after today.     

The Dow, which opened down over 100 points in seeming anticipation, dropped 777 points today- the greatest one-day decline in its history and even greater than the drop after September 11, 2001- to close the say at $10,365.  However to see the glass 1/10 full, this was the 17th worst daily drop percentage-wise, so not quite the worst.  Crude oil fell $10.52 to close at $96.36.   

The Sydney Morning Herald reported tonight that “online broking portal Etrade ground to a virtual halt this morning [Tuesday September 30] as it struggled to cope with massive trading volumes.”  Is this a hint of more blood to come?  Damn sure it is!

3. நிறுவலின் பின்னர் புகுபதிகை செய்யவும் ( Log on செய்யவும் )
4. விண்டோஸ் அக்டிவேஷன் பண்ணும்படி கேட்கும்போதோ அல்லது
   go to “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “System Tools” -> “Activate Windows”
   அல்லது
   right click on “Computer” and click “Click here to activate Windows”
   என்பதன் மூலமோ Activation Window வை திறந்து

7. இனி அவரிடம் நீங்கள் டவுண்கிரேட் செய்துள்ளதை தெரிவிக்கவும். அவர்கள் நீங்கள் நிறுவிய இயங்குவளத்திற்கான product key யை கேட்கும்போது Vista விற்கான product key யை தெரிவிக்கவும். அத்துடன் XP யின் விபரங்களையும் அவர்களிடம் தெரிவியுங்கள்.
8. validation முடிந்ததும் Confirmation ID ஒன்று தருவார்கள். இதனை 6ஆவது படிமுறையில் காட்டப்பட்ட பட சாரளத்தில் Step 4 என்பதில் பதிவு செய்துவிட்டீர்களென்றால் அத்தோடு முற்றும் போட்லாம்.

I really think she has a tendency to get over looked in most story lines, but when it comes to orphans this one shines above the rest.  Some call her a Downgrade Dazzler, I call her sparkles...no wait, I call her a female who can literally blow your ass up into kibbles and bits. Her most memorable moment for me at least was when she packed her bags and left the X Mansion to go join Generation X under the supervision of ice princess Emma "tits" Frost and Sean "shrill cast" Cassidy a.k.a. the Irish mutant Banshee.  

While with Gen X it was all "When I was an X Man.." this and "Wolverine taught me how to do..." that. She would soon realize that much like the second generation of X Men back in the day, (Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunder Bird, Banshee, Sunfire etc..) this was a new day, and all previous battles aside, new badies wouldn't give a flying fuck Forge how many experience points you accrued on the way.

Currently Jubes is taggin' along with the Ultimate version of Alpha flight. Seems the entire team is hopped up on the equivalent of the goo that made Capn' America bulging a super soldier. They seem to be baddies as well and are causing quite a bit of trouble for the X Men.

So we decided to downgrade to Windows XP and hope dell.com will support us for all the drivers. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- CNNmoney.com reports that things are looking like there might be egg or, AIG rather, on the face of the US's largest insurance company. On Monday of this week potentially deadly credit ratings hit the company. According to CNNmoney.com, the ratings indicated AIG's ability to raise cash "is 'extremely limited' because of its plummeting stock price, widening yields on its debt, and its difficult capital market conditions."

In the past nine months alone, AIG has lost more than $18 billion.  AIG's motto, as indicated on its website is, "The strength to be there."  But to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, there may be no there there.

If there's anyone out there with a Dell L400 using bios version A08 or lower (especially A03) - please report:
A. Does the fan start at boot and then never start again? (True for BIOS ver A09)
B. Does the fan start at boot and then start again during use, i.e cycle on and off depending on what you do?
(This is how the fan should normally work.)
C. What temperatures and/or fan speeds does Speedfan report? (In BIOS A09 it falsely says no fan and ACPI temp 50C)

Internet: o vício em informação faz com que eu leia muita coisa Wikipedia e em trocentos portais e blogs. Recentemente tenho canalizado isso pra academia, e passado mais tempo lendo artigos e entrevistas que (espero) vão me ajudar na dissertação. Para isso eu uso o Firefox e o Foxit Reader - bem mais leve que o Adobe Reader.

Texto: escrevo para o trabalho, para o mestrado e por prazer. O Word 2000 tem sido meu companheiro nos últimos 8 anos, bem como o Notepad (entre 2002 e 2004 cheguei a escrever alguns trabalhos da faculdade nele). Os editores do Blogger e do Wordpress também são meus amigos, especialmente porque não preciso transportar quando estou escrevendo neles. No Xandros prefiro usar o [equivalente do Notepad], configurado com uma tela preta e letras verdes, para fazer fichamentos e anotações de aula. A grande função que o Word me oferece, além das ótimas opções de formatação, é o controle de alterações e os comentários. Quando se escreve em conjunto isso faz tudo mais fácil.

Tratamento de Imagens: Photoshp CS e, mais recentemente, o Adobe Lightroom dão conta do recado. O GIMP também não faz feio, aliás, para o que eu preciso ele é bem tranquilo.

Jogos: Cada vez menos, grazadeus. Jogar é bom, mas não recomendo a ninguém fazer isso no mesmo computador que usa para trabalhar. Costumo jogar clássicos de SNES, Genesis e Arcade - coisas que não tomam tanto tempo quanto deveriam. E. nada, nada de MMORPGs, managers online ou shooters - isso consome a vida das pessoas.

Música e filmes: Meu Gradiente velhão toca vinil e cassete. Como tenho poucos vinis, que ainda estão emprestados, e usei todas as minhas fitas para gravar entrevistas, faço uso da boa e velha mp3 e de CDs. Para isso o uso o computador ligado ao aprelho som. Também uso o PC para assistir DVDs. Mas faço isso com pouca freqüência.

Durante uns bons anos (1999-2004) usei um computador que tinha a seguinte configuração: Processador de 500Mhz, 64MB (mais tarde 128) de memória RAM e 4GB (mais tarde 7,2) de espaço em disco. Não era a melhor coisa do mundo mas me serviu para tudo o que eu precisava. Comprei o PC novo no final de 2004 e ele também não foi nenhum top de linha - agora muito menos.

A questão é que eu preciso de computador para muito pouco. Meu PC velho fazia, e certa medida, tudo que o de hoje faz e me atendia satisfatoriamente, apesar de não permitir trabalhar em com muitas tarefas ao mesmo tempo. De todo modo, o que acontece é que um computador novo amplia o conceito de uso e cria novas necessidades.

Mas isso nem sempre é bom, porque o necessário para trabalhar com competência pode ser muito pouco. Poder escrever com o navegador, o gerenciador de e-mail, o leitor de PDF e o messenger abertos pode facilitar a vida bem como criar distrações, favorecer procrastinção e etc.

Muita gente (provavelmente quem tem problemas em se concentrar como eu) também pensa assim. E a partir disso surge toda uma noção de uso "minimalista" do computador. Pra quê um gerenciador de feeds no desktop que te permite postar no Tweeter? Para que serve um editor de texto com mil opções de formatação quando tudo o que você precisa é simplesmente escrever?

A partir de questionamentos como esses é surgiu o conceito de Zenware - que conheci através do Magaiver. A idéia é fazer programas que proporcionam uma espécie de "volta às raízes" da computação, isolam fatores de distração e permitem que você se concentre no que precisa fazer.

Os dois programas desse tipo que testei foram o Darkroom e o Q10, editores de texto bem simples. Ambos abrem uma tela escura que cobre todo a Área de Trabalho e permite que você se concentre apenas no que está escrevendo.

O Darkroom foi o primeiro programa ao qual tive acesso. Peguei numa das épocas em que tinha transcrever entrevistas e fazer relatórios a perder de vista. No meio de uma das deadlines mais insanas ele foi crucial pra que eu conseguisse dar conta de mais de 270 minutos de falas importantes e difíceis de compreender. É um programa mais simples, cru, praticamente um Notepad bombado.

O Q10 me foi apresentado pelo Rocha na semana passada. Esse funciona de maneira mais interessante que o Darkroom porque trás recursos que enfatizam a produtividade. Você pode programá-lo para uma certa meta de caracteres por sessão e usar o (muito bem-vindo) corretor ortográfico do BROffice. Além disso ele simula o barulho de máquina de escrever enquanto você digita - o que alguns podem achar insuportável mas eu curti demais.

No caso, eu escrevo os textos e depois uso o Word ou Open(BR)Office para formatar se for necessário. Mas como, em geral, tratam-se de fichamentos, acabo usando trechos dos txts em trabalhos maiores. Não há coisa melhor que um computador livre de distrações.

Reverse Provides:

Versions laat een lijst zien van de beschikbare versies in de cache, waar deze cache zich bevindt (folder) en de MD5-sum.
Dependencies geeft per samba versie aan waar het pakket samba afhankelijk van is.
Reverse depends geeft aan welke andere pakketten afhankelijk zijn van samba, maar hoeven niet geïnstalleerd te zijn.
Provides geeft aan welke versies van samba in de cache aanwezig zijn en dus geïnstalleerd kunnen worden.

Stel je voor we willen de geïnstalleerde versie 4.5 downgraden naar versie 4.4. We moeten dan het commando 'aptitude install' uitvoeren met de versie van het te downgraden pakket. Dit doen we door achter de naam van het pakket een gelijkteken (=) met de versienaam te plaatsen. De versienaam vind je onder 'Provides:' in de uitkomst van het apt-cache commando zoals hierboven weergegeven. Het commando wat we dus in het terminalvenster gaan uitvoeren is sudo aptitude install samba=3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.4 . Zorg wel dat je de vragen die gesteld worden goed leest, anders kan je wel eens iets fout doen! Dit geeft ongeveer het volgende terug:

Let op het woord DOWNGRADED.
Het voorgaande werkt alleen als de geïnstalleerde pakketten in de cache bewaard worden. De optie 'Opgehaalde pakketten verwijderen na installatie' in Systeem --> Beheer --> 'Synaptic pakketbeheer' --> Instellingen --> Voorkeuren --> Bestanden tabblad mag niet aangevinkt zijn!
