The other day my sister gave me a Sirius Satellite radio.

She got it for my brother in-law, but he already had it in his car, and as the technology clearing house for my family, I stepped in and took it over. I haven't gotten around to setting it up yet, but it got me thinking about other radio options.

See, I've been thinking a lot lately about HD Radio and wondering if it really is better than Satellite radio...or even regular radio. The big pro over Satellite is that you have no monthly fees. The con is you have to buy a whole new radio to hear it...although it's not really a con, but more of a tie because Satellite has that issue too.

So what it really come down to is content. Satellite obviously rules here because they have better content and no commercials, whereas regular radio just sucks. And being that HD radio is run by regular radio, I have to figure it's gonna suck too.

Suck whale balls, that is.

I have no idea when radio decided to suck. Obviously it was before my time, or during a portion of my time when I was busy with other things, but I wish I was at the meeting where all the radio bosses sat down and decided:

"What everyone wants is to hear the same 50-100 songs on loop all day!" They would all loudly agree..or make agreeable grunting noises at least. Then the discussion would turn to the DJs, and the bosses would all agree that they didn't really need to be a part of the equation anymore.

"Why bother having a passionate and educated person choosing what songs poeple should hear? We'll choose the music, or at least let the recdord companies pay us to choose what they want, and all our DJs have to do it be mildly entertaining!" they'd say, clapping each other on the back and lighting cigars. Congratulating themselves for inventing 'crap radio.'

I think we've only tolerated it for so long because it's free. But, free or not, regular radio will most likely never return to the old format of making hits or breaking new talent.
That task is now left to the people...and the internet.

One such discovery was DJ Frane and his fantastic 2003 sophmore effort "Electric Garden of Delights: Beats to Blaze To Volume 2." I have to give credit where credit is due here and bow to whomever used to do the Vice Magazine music page. A few years back, they were doing their year-end music round up and all the dude could talk about was how awesome this album was. I decided to take him at his word, and was glad I did.

If you like DJ Shadow or DJ Krush...or any kind of downtempo beatmaking (Blockhead, old Nightmares on Wax, Jon Kennedy) then this is for you. See, for the genre, one has to wade through a lot of poseurs and fuck sticks before you come across anything of worth.

And DJ Frane is worth it. The best part of writing this blog and researching the artists is that you learn new things. I learned that DJ Frane lives here in jolly old Los Angeles and sometime plays at Carbon in Culver City. Good to know since it's near my house. He started mixing and DJing in his teens and dropped his first album "Frane's Fantastic Boat Ride: Beats to Blaze To Volume 1" in 1999. Apparently someone at Good Vibe records heard his work and suggested me make a whole album of it.

In a world where sample based music has mostly drifted away on currents of legal woes, Frane keeps it going with real artistry and a lot of live intrumentalization (He plays guitar and keys as well.) He likes his stuff to be less samples and more sound collage and there fore gives your ears a nice workout. It's really good chill out and smoking music as the title implies...with lots of jazzy, psychedelic touches. Try out my favorite 'Synethisia' to see what I mean.

[audio=http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/4/28/1888220/08%20_%20synesthesia.mp3]

After that, try the Black Sabbath sampling opening track...if you're not hooked by then, then I can't help you in this post. But be on the lookout for his newest album "Journey to the Planet of the Birds."

Greyboy Allstars & Karl Denson - "Home Cookin’"

What the hell is wrong with people these days?

I went to an Obama fundraiser event the other day. It was the first political event I've ever been too, but I mostly went because DJ Z-Trip was playing and they were giving away Sheperd Fairey prints. The big Obama "Hope" prints that you've probably seen around.

The first hundred folk to show up got one that was signed by the artist, and since I like Sheperd's work I was down.

Problem was, so were a lot of other folk.

Turns out said posters were already fetching upwards of $500 on Ebay, so instead of a bunch of stoked music fans/ political supporters, you got a shitload of poseurs who showed up at noon to stand in line (I would have done the same, but I have a job.) These leeches got their posters and promptly left.

They didn't stay for the show, they didn't come to support, they came to make a buck...and something about that really pissed me off.

I might have been less annoyed if they had some extra posters about for the real fans, or even if they had some for sale. But they didn't...and all through the night I saw people walk up with their pre-appointed wrist bands grab their posters and then immediately walk off.

Wankers...

Or maybe I'm just jealous.

Back to the topic at hand, I give you the eclectic awesomeness that is Backini...and if you haven't heard of him, then you aren't alone.

The Brighton native's real name is Rob Quickenden, and he's a sound engineer as well as a crate digger of much renown. While most sample based artists hunt for snippets of funk (Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow,) and others go for obscure dance music (The Avalanches,) Backini seems drawn towards the records that no one wants.

The kind of albums that even thrift stores tend to stuff into cardboard boxes and write "Free" on the side.

Backini's creations are not meant as deep messages or strong statements, according to Rob, but rather what he calls "shallow, throw-away music." This is due to his fascination with the world of pop music. And pop is kind of what it is, if pop was constructed from old 78rpm swing music, kids records and other assorted jazz and easy listening records, but what the listener is left with is nothing short of wonderful. With his engineering background, Rob deftly manages to bring all the sound together in ways that please and amaze.

After releasing a hand-full of acclaimed singles on the newly formed Lumenessence label (most of which can be found as a collection called Backini "Lumenessence" on some P2P networks), Backini released his first full length album in 2003 called "Threads."

And it's a really great little album. The big hit that ended up on a lot of DJ playlists was the war time sampling 'Company B-Boy,' which at first listen will explain it's appeal. Then you get the moody, interweaving noir of 'Go Go Killer' and the spaced "Close Encounters" sampling on 'Dreamer.' But you know what? The rest of the album is pretty damn satisfying as well.

Rob also made an awesome track that I hoped would be included in this collection, but because of sampling laws was only released as a bootleg called 'Nulife.' It gets my vote for best use of "The Godfather" theme song sample, and I've included it here because it's so fucking bad ass.

[audio=http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/4/28/1888220/backini%20-%20nulife.mp3]

Will Backini "Threads" change your life? No, but it will live in your iPod, car stereo, or office computer for many days.

And you'll look back and thank me.

A Strangely Isolated Place is one of those albums that I’ve had on my “back burner

A Strangely Isolated Place is one of those albums that I've had on my "back burner" forever. I've always wanted to pick it up eventually, but it's something that I probably wouldn't pay more than a couple dollars for. Luckily I found it in on a clearance rack last week for a dollar. I liked Ulrich Schnauss' first album, Far Away Trains Passing By, to a point; it was something pleasant I could put on whenever I wanted to listen to something easy. An excellent album for a listener not seeking any sort of challenge. And I don't mean that in a bad or sarcastic way or anything — it really was a nice album to put on after playing something particularly difficult.

I think A Strangely Isolated Place can serve that function just as well. It's nice and pleasant and shouldn't be especially offensive to anyone. A few days ago I put it on after reviewing a pretty challenging album (I think it might have been the Kenneth Kirschner). Maybe my words there are the most telling thing about the album: this isn't music that you "listen to", it's music that you "put on". It doesn't seem to require any though at all, nor does it create any new thoughts or mental images. Literally nothing comes to my mind when I'm listening to this music. It's not a bad thing, in fact it's ideal for when you want to not think.

Schnauss' sonic palette is similar to his previous album. It's still a sort of downtempo electronic shoegaze with a degree of cheese to it. Lots of people like to compare his music to Boards of Canada, but I've always felt those people were way off, at least until the release of The Campfire Headphase — the bits I've heard of that album reminded me very strongly of Schnauss. The mood, although hard to pin down, is similar to the previous album as well, both being bright and perhaps hopeful but rather ambiguous. The major difference between this and Far Away Trains Passing By is in the song structure; while I found the previous album quite minimalistic, here Schnauss goes for a much more dynamic and cinematic style, with grandiose climaxes and build-ups and parts where most of the sound drops out in the middle of the song.

It's a pleasant album, and there's not much more to say about it than that. I sort of wish I could just stop writing this review, because, like I've said, thinking and Ulrich Schnauss' music don't go that well together. You know, that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Greetings all.

I come to you bearing some sad news (and a previously unscheduled post).
The mighty Isaac Hayes has passed away.
Known to most for his Oscar winning ‘Theme from Shaft’, Hayes was a major cog in the Stax soul music machine in the 60’s.
Along with his partner David Porter, Hayes wrote a grip of amazing songs for Sam & Dave, including ‘Soul Man’, ‘Hold On I’m Comin’, ‘You Don’t Know Like I Know’, ‘I Thank You’ (that’s Hayes on the clavinet-y keyboard line) as well as ‘B-A-B-Y- for Carla Thomas and one of my all time favorite 45s 'Your Good Thing (Is About To End) by Mable John (and later by Lou Rawls).
Hayes later stepped out from behind the scenes for a very successful solo career, at one point his releases pulling the very overextended Stax organization from the brink of insolvency.
The peak of this period was 1969s ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ and its epic reworking of the Bacharach/David classic ‘Walk On By’. Abetted by the Bar-Kays, Hayes removes the song from the elegant pathos of the Dionne Warwick version, drenches it in a quiet storm of strings and tasteful horns, all set against a tripped out fuzz guitar motif*. Hayes’ ‘Walk on By’ is one of the finest soul records of all time, period (as well as the definitive recording of the song). It was a Top 20 hit in the Fall of 1969, his biggest hit until ‘Shaft’ in 1971.
He will be missed.
See you on Tuesday for Vinyl Record Day.
Peace
Larry

*Haye's version of 'Walk On By' was sampled many, MANY times...

NOTE: NO OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY FOR ME TODAY. BE BACK NEXT WEEK!

Even with 80G of music in the palm of my hand at any given time, I still manage to get bored by Pink Panther (aka the 'pod) on occasion. When I actually practice some restraint and don't go spending the gas money digging in the crates at a few of my favorite spots, I hit up some of my favorite music-loving folks who work hard to share the love by creating podcasts and mixes that showcase what they are digging at the time.

I've been meaning to do this post for a while and I think it's especially relevant while we are in the midst of voting for the Black Weblog Awards. Ya'll don't seem to be that good at clicking on links :) If there was ever a post to do so, it's this one. Trust me on this.

Be sure to share some of your favorite podcasts in the comments.

Todd Kelly: Flowink.com (Known to many as the "Kaing of R&B Podcasting" (rhythm & blues, vintage soul, hip-hop, jazz, house, world wide soul)

EJ Flavors (I call him the "Master Teacher." One of the very first podcasts I subscribed to. Since I'm a 90s music junkie, I particularly love his New Jack Swing mixes. They got me through many a morning commute to a job that I hated with every fiber of my being.)

Friday Favecast (a glimpse of urban lifestyle with music, fitness tips and social commentary with a comical flavor)

Soul Sanctuary: Where The Spirit Dwells ( a plethora of mixes from various DJs available for download, including Soul Sanctuary Radio hosted by The Vibe Mistress Stephanie Renee)

Gordon Gartell Radio (Phonte of Little Brother's podcast; pure tomfoolery and hot music)

RIBS (Rhythms In Black Satin) (T Grundy always takes a sista to school with some classic soul. I wasn't even a twinke in my Daddy's eye when a lot of the music he features was released. So I learn a lot.)

DJ Stylus: (aka "The Vibe Conductor" and the name fits; lots of international flava in your ear here which sets him apart from a lot of other podcasts out there. Check out his Project Vibe mixes, a station you should be listening to)

DJ Diva (Do the ladies run this mutha - hellll yea! You know I got love for the female DJ. I love her artist spotlights which have featured music from Al Green, Luther, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and The O'Jays)

The Infinite Ink: Soulrific (the best in Nu Soul, R&B, conscious Hip Hop and Jazz)

My Love For Music (smooth jazz, world fusion, new age, ambient, downtempo music)

Deeper Soul (for those lovers of soulful house music)

Also check out Soul Bounce's mixtape roundups.

In addtion to the podcasts, on occasion someone will drop a gem in my inbox for me to groove to. This week DJ Cuzzin B who you may remember from that hot True School Corporation party I raved about earlier in the year hit me up with his Soul For Sale mixtape which features tracks from as Jazmin Sullivan, Raphael Saadiq, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Teedra Moses, and Strange Fruit Project f/Erykah Badu, 9th Wonder and Q-Tip f/D'Angelo. Yup, it's as hot as it sounds. Download here.

Summer is winding down which means that soon my attention will be split between The Green Nation and my musical adventures. Won't be enough hours in the day. I'm taking the summer out with a bang though. This weekend, I'm excited to get a get a first look at Jazmin Sullivan and Raphael Saadiq who are putting out two of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. I've been watching clips of Jazmin today on You Tube and I. CAN'T. WAIT. You know I'll do all I can to bring it to you here.

J*Davey and Jill Scott videos coming to you next week so stay tuned!

Welcome back everyone, I hope your work week went well and I hope your weekend will belong to you. Two things I have told myself, (1) Take life for what it's worth and (2) not to do any more podcast with 17-18 tracks...I can't handle that when it comes to the show notes. But besides that everything is great.
