Just got an email in the wee hours of this morning from the Lomographic Society International that they are going to send over some cameras to dublab for cross-promotion. These cameras are so awesome, I have been checking out the Diana (seen above) for awhile now. There's a huge group of people super in love with this particular camera that was born off some St. Petersburg Russians back in 1982; the lomography website has a huge community of camera owners that upload and share their cool photos. Go buy one, share them with us here in the blog... you can buy some cool ones at urbanoutfitters.com

Inspired by La Monte Young's Dream House as well as the work of musicians and composers such as Terry Riley, Yoko Ono and John Cage, Tonalism combines harmonious textures with visual elements to create an atmosphere where the audience is encouraged to bring pillows, cushions and sleeping bags to lay down, listen and watch for an extended period of time. See pictures from dublab's Tonalism event with the Annenberg Foundation and Farmlab last year by clicking......here.
Check it out - there is an interesting fun world of bunny-headed fishes that are swimming in an ocean that is sprinkled with trash... it made me reflect on the state of our oceans today and how there are some parts of the ocean where all natural wildlife has died and the water is now turned into acid. GROSS. We need to reverse this from happening!! Anyway, in checking out who this artist was, I was happily surprised to see that this was done by longtime dublab friend and practically resident artists, Kozyndan. Funny thing is that I've been trying to find a surf instructor in cleaner waters for a group of girls, including Kozy - so if you know anyone good, please email me. Read the article on shift to learn more about this amazingly cute and inspirational duet.

Didn't stop us from having a good time though - and Michelle and Elaina and I made a hilarious video of that Shorty Got Low Ludacris song. Video booths. Get one for your event. Never fails to deliver.

It was nice to run into our friends from the House of Cassette at the show, and later Elaina and I brought some soju to the dublab studios where Frosty and Ale were in the middle of their 24 hour live fund drive. I guess they did pretty well and got a lot of support, which we are very happy to hear.

The tote bag is packed with an Invisible Children bracelet (check out the documentary - the story totally broke me down in learning about what's happening in Uganda) and a bottle of charity:water which will help clean the water in impoverished communities.

2. Elvis gets around to telling me that he is getting married to a Chilean

3. Julie Solomon of Visionary Media House and I begin planning a very exciting community art event at her eco-house in Echo Park that will be featured on the Discovery Channel

4. I receive a tempting and lucrative proposition to work in Korea for a year

..and yet I gotta say that the best of all things for me today was:

5. The dublab HANDS ON proton drive has begun! I shied away from going on-air with Frosty this am, and opted to nod my head to Matthew David, Anthony Valadez, and the cute-as-a-button Swedish singer, Kissy (anyone have a link for this girl??). Pink Cloud has been representing dublab for its sponsorships and tie-ins over the past few months now, and are very grateful to all those who sponsored this drive, especially to GOOD magazine who just came in with their support this evening. "5 foot Jen" is helping GOOD out and hinted to some ideas to get me tapped in to the goodness, we will see where that takes us... in the meanwhile, dublab will be filmed by Current TV on Wednesday, and you just might see me in the corner frame texting away as usual.

Venga! La cambia nunca cambia!

Not sure what it is about my India obsession right now but I'm riding it. I'm a sucker for a good curry. Damn, is that racist?

FROSTY of the Dublab Soundsystem is hearing me though and luckily we're just in time to shamelessly plug the DUBLAB PROTON DRIVE fund raiser. You gotta give it up to a crew that promotes positivity and has never sold out in 10 years of operation. I'm sure the opportunity to cash in has been there but luckily for us these cats have integrity; a rare thing these days.

But I digress. Indian music. Love it and so does Frosty. The interesting thing about this mix is that all the records were compiled when Frosty was asked to smuggle wigs into India for the movie The Darjeeling Limited. Yeah. Not only did homie get to go digging for records in India but he also got to tell people that he was there smuggling hairpieces. These are the lives my friends lead. Player.

I know some of you didn't believe me but I'm f'reals. Zen's mom is a DJ. I tried to write something clever about ATOMIC NANCY but this is what you need to know:

(via her MYSPACE)
The Atomic Cafe opened in 1946 in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles by Minoru and Ito Matoba. During the late 70's to mid 80's their daughter, Nancy, transformed the quiet neighborhood bar/ cafe into one of L.A.'s most popular hang outs for the local punk rock scene, politicians, and the Japanese mafia. On any given night you could see the likes of Blondie, The Go-Go's, Devo, X, Warhol, David Byrne, Bowie sitting down having a bowl of noodles in the company of old Japanese men with full body tattoos. The legendary jukebox played everything from The Germs to Mori Shinichi until 4 in the morning as crazy waitresses would be jumping on top of tables trying to serve food.

Yep...coolest ever. And she still rocks parties! LOVE YOU NANCY!

This is a mix of 45's from that same jukebox and originally aired on DUBLAB. Some real historical LA ish. There, enough said.

Back in the day, when I DJ'd at dublab, I was the resident garage rock guy. I spun old Back From the Grave and Pebbles tunes, played rare Warlocks stuff I recorded live when they were just starting out, and had interviews with members of the Raymen and Fuzztones.

I was a far cry from the electronica and afro-cuban stuff the station usually played. I think dublab just picked me because they had to have one rawk guy, and because my show served as a good prequel to Nobody's psychedelic show. He would play Electric Sugarcube Flashbacks, the Zombies, and some other hippy-dippy stuff that I love now, but hadn't yet gotten into because I was soooo rock and roll. I was impressed with his collection (he had just as much psyche vinyl as I had garage) but was even more amazed that this was just ONE show out of five he did every week, each with a different theme. He probably had an electronica show, a hip hop show, and god knows what else on the other two days of the week he DJ'd that slot, each as complex and original as my one-day show.

So, I loved his taste in music, but it took me a couple years to find an incredible appreciation for the music he himself composed. I wasn't too impressed with his first album (probably because it was all hip-hop infused) but his second album continues to blow me away. It's electronic, sample-heavy, and trip-hoppy, but with a definite nod to the psychedelic music he loves. There are even covers of the Monkees' "Porpoise Song" and the Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year," and they're done tastefully: not extended dance remixes or mashups of the originals, but true reworkings incorporating everything good from his own sound with all the wonder of the originals (and I think the Beachwood Sparks' singer is the one doing the vocals). For those who want to find some electronic music to love from this decade, I think it's a great "in" to this style of music, since it's mellow, full of dynamics, and definitely has a few toes dipped in the psychedelic sounds pioneered by the likes of Silver Apples, Gandalf, the Nice, Love, and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band.

Anyway, this week he was interviewed in L.A. Record (yet again). It's short but sweet, and there's even a podcast there you can grab. And for New Yorkers, he's coming your way.
