The etchings reminded me a lot of Paula Rego's work and of Goya's narrative prints. The sculpture installation was the undeniable highlight of the exhibition; when you enter the museum you have to enter through a doorway covered by a curtain to see the sculpture. The moment I stepped behind the curtain into the installation, I felt a chill in my blood and instantly felt myself holding my breath in. The installation is comprised of 19 life size, polychromed wood figures surrounding a kneeling figure of a hooded man who has been shot multiple times with arrows. The entire room is completely dark except for a few lights to highlight parts of the installation. I continued to hold my breath the whole time I was in the gallery. I can't remember the last time I saw sculpture that affected me in a physical way like that. To put it simply, the work was terrifying, powerful, and moving. Qua ebbe buona accoglienza, conoscendo perfino Giovanni Bellini ed essendo incaricato di dipingere La festa del Rosario (1506) per il Fondaco dei Tedeschi, una grossa comunità di origine germanica insediata nella zona di Rialto. In quel momento Venezia godeva di un buon periodo di sviluppo economico, grazie anche ai commerci con l’Oriente.

Proprio dalla città lagunare, l’artista scrisse una serie di lettere, alcune indirizzate al fedele amico d’infanzia Willibald Pirckheimer di Norimberga.

In una di queste, datata 7 febbraio 1506, possiamo leggere l’opinione di Dürer per i veneziani:

Vorrei foste qui a Venezia. Ci sono tanti compagni gentili tra gli Italiani che sempre più si accompagnano a me, cosa che a uno, poi, dovrebbe intenerire il cuore: studiosi, intelligenti, buoni suonatori di liuto, flautisti, intenditori di pittura, e molte menti nobili, gente di vera virtù, e mi dimostrano molto onore e amicizia. Ma vi si trovano anche i manigoldi più infidi, più bugiardi, più ladri, che credo non ce ne siano di simili al mondo.

… Io stesso debbo ridere con loro quando parlano con me. Sanno che si conosce la loro malizia, ma non se ne preoccupano. Fra gli Italiani ho molti buoni amici che mi avvertono di non mangiare e bere con i pittori. Molti di loro mi sono anche nemici e copiano nelle chiese le mie opere e dovunque possano venirne a conoscenza. E poi le criticano e dicono che non sono di genere antico e perciò non buone.

Nelle lettere di Dürer risalta un uomo sincero, confidenziale, pronto a raccontare all’amico Willibald ogni cosa e a soddisfare i desideri di quest’ultimo. Per lui il nostro pittore ricercava libri, anelli, smeraldi, tappeti preziosi, a lui confidava il difficile rapporto con gli artisti veneziani, ma anche l’intesa avuta con il già vecchio Giovanni Bellini, uno dei pochi che lo capiva e lo apprezzava, e che aveva già raggiunto l’età di 74 anni.

Raccontava a Willibald l’otto marzo 1506: Vi ho spedito un anello con zaffiro, sul quale mi avete scritto con premura… Tutti dicono si tratta di una pietra trovata [N.d.R.: vuol dire buon affare], e che in Germania costerebbe 50 fiorini.

Confessandosi, in un’altra lettera del 18 agosto 1506 annotava: … a Venezia sono diventato un gentiluomo, mentre il 13 ottobre 1506: Qui sono un signore, a casa un parassita. In Italia veniva trattato come artista, era famoso, le sue incisioni si vendevano con facilità.

Fu tanta l’influenza della terra italiana che alcune delle missive contengono parole addirittura in dialetto veneto.

Da Venezia, il pittore si mosse per Bologna e poi per Ferrara, in cerca della segreta prospettiva. Il suo sogno era conoscere il vecchio Andrea Mantegna, ma giunse tardi al capezzale dell’artista da lui amato.
