New technologies and network-based processes are having a significant impact on USS San Antonio (LPD 17)during their first deployment as part of the USS Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group.

San Antonio engineering department's new systems are improving efficiency and ensuring mission readiness. One of those new systems is the Engineering Control System (ECS).

"The Engineering Control System is a computer-based system that provides remote monitoring and control of the propulsion, fuel, electrical, auxiliary, damage control and ballast systems," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer.

For the engineers aboard San Antonio, managing the engineering spaces and workload is less tasking with ECS.

"We can have the same amount of work as all the other ships in the fleet, but we can have less manual labor due to our engineering systems running on remote," said Chief Warrant Officer William Rivera, San Antonio's main propulsion officer.

ECS has also made a positive impact on engineering watch standing in the Central Control Station.

"In Central Control, our watch standers can manage our water, propulsion and five diesel generators through computers networked through the Ship Wide Area Network, or SWAN," added Rivera.

SWAN is the first computer-run network to be the backbone of vital ship components, such as engineering, navigation and steering.

The increased efficiency also benefits other shipboard departments. Most departments rely on the engineering department's capabilities and services, in one way or another, to complete their missions that support Maritime Security Operations (MSO).

"The combat systems department requires Engineering's electrical division to provide 400 Hz and electrical power to radars and missiles," said Engineman 1st Class (SW/AW) James Moss. "The operations department cannot maneuver without the immediate response and talents of the main propulsion division providing engine plant integrity, and the auxiliary control department provides cooling systems to vital electrical systems."

San Antonio's engineers are proving to be an essential asset on the ship's maiden deployment and have set high standards for themselves.

"Our engineers show great dedication and professionalism," said Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class (SW) Marcus White. "I am looking forward to a continued successful deployment that will set the benchmark high for all LPD-17-class ships to follow."

San Antonio is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO). MSO help develop security in the maritime environment. From security arises stability that results in global economic prosperity. MSO complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

Typical Long Term Commercial Financing by E Commercial Solutions

Term: 5, 10, 15 year terms are most common

Amortization: 20,25 or 30 years. 15 to 20 years of typically fully amortized.

Typical Rates:

10 year fixed = 10 yr US Treasury bill rate + 1.1% to 2.0%
15 and 20 year fixed = 10 yr Treasury + 1.6% to 2.5%>
5 year fixed = 5 yr Treasury + 1.6% to 2.5%
ARM = LIBOR + 1.7% to 2.5%

Maximum Loan to Value: Most lenders will go to 75% and in some cases 80%. Depending on the strength of the loan a 10% seller second is allowed.

Prepayment Terms:

5 yr to 10 yr fixed rate loans - typically have a decreasing prepayment each year (e.g. 5%, 4%, 3%, 2%, 1%).
Adjustable rate loans - typically have a decreasing and smaller prepay (e.g. 3%, 2%, 1%).
Recourse: Longer term loans (typically from life insurance companies or conduits) are generally non-recourse. Bank loans are typically recourse.

Loan Costs: Borrowers are responsible for all due diligence and closings costs (e.g. Appraisal, Phase 1 Environmental, site inspection, title, etc).

Refinances can roll most of the costs into the loan.

Loans under $3M - costs range from $6,000 to $12,000
For loans over $3M - costs can be $20,000 or more

New Always-on Mobile Broadband Devices are Coming
It’s a GSMA-led initiative to create a new categ

New Always-on Mobile Broadband Devices are Coming
It’s a GSMA-led initiative to create a new category of always-connected mobile broadband devices, delivering an alternative to Wi-Fi. And 16 major IT and mobile companies have formed a group to achieve this. The idea is to give consumers the freedom to get online on the move, while enabling operators to address an estimated $50 billion opportunity.

In the first phase of this initiative, mobile operators, PC manufacturers, and chipset providers are uniting to pre-install mobile broadband into a range of notebook PCs that will be ready to switch on and surf straight out of the box in 91 countries across the world.

To support this initiative, the GSMA has created the mobile broadband service mark, a new global identifier which will help consumers easily identify the array of 'ready to run' mobile broadband devices. The service mark is backed by a global media spend of more than $1 billion in the next year -- evidence that the industry is serious about this proposition.

"Mobile Broadband is like a home or office broadband connection with one crucial difference: freedom. Freedom from hot spots, freedom from complexity, and freedom from security concerns," said Michael O'Hara, CMO of the GSMA.

Integrating mobile broadband into notebook PCs is the first step in a wider strategy to deliver wireless Internet access and management to a whole range of previously unconnected devices -- from cameras and MP3 players to refrigerators, cars, and set-top boxes. However, only devices that offer a truly un-tethered experience, such as those offered by the 16 companies announced in today's program, will qualify to carry the new service mark.

Launch participants include 3 Group, Asus, Dell, ECS, Ericsson, Gemalto, Lenovo, Microsoft, Orange, Qualcomm, Telefonica Europe, Telecom Italia, TeliaSonera, T-Mobile, Toshiba, and Vodafone.

The GSM Association (GSMA) is the global trade group representing more than 750 GSM mobile operators across 218 countries and territories of the world. The Association's members represent more than 3 billion GSM and 3GSM connections -- over 86% of the world's mobile phone connections, according to GSMA.

Πρόκειται για τα μοντέλα X58SO, P6T Deluxe, GA-EX58-Extreme, Renaissance, X58B-A και Eclipse αντίστοιχα.

Όλα τα υπόλοιπα motherboards, εκτός των ECS X58B-A και Intel DX58SO (διαθέτουν δυο θύρες PCI Express 2.0 x16) φέρουν από τρεις PCI Express 2.0 x16 θύρες.

Διαθέτει επίσης power on/off, reset και clear CMOS πλήκτρα ενώ ενσωματώνει EPU (Energy Processing Unit).

DFI. Διαθέτει πλήκτρα power on/off, reset και clear CMOS αλλά και 2-digit LED matrix.

Διαθέτει επίσης 10 x S-ATA 3,0Gbps connectors, πλήκτρα power on/off, reset και clear CMOS, 2-digit LED matrix για debugging ενώ κάνει χρήση της τεχνολογίας Ultra Durable 3 της Gigabyte και φέρει το σύστημα διαχείρισης της ενέργειας Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver Advanced.

Προσφέρει Triple-Channel υποστήριξη στο υποσύστημα της μνήμης, διαθέτει πλήκτρα power on/off, reset και clear CMOS αλλά και LED matrix δυο ψηφίων για debugging.

Διαθέτει έξι S-ATA 3,0Gbps connectors, δυο PCI Express 2.0 x16, μια PCI, δυο PCI Express x1 καθώς και μια PCI Express x4.

Participating in the recyclers meeting held in the Gali 2 neighborhood of Delhi was one of the most hope-filled experiences of my career.

I started working on e-waste issues in Oakland and San Francisco hoping that low income communities could financially benefit from recycling computers. That was almost 12 years ago. At the time, Labor cost, real estate cost and toxics in the electronic products made it cost prohibitive for low income Bay Area entrepreneurs to safely get into the e-waste recycling business.

In Delhi it’s different. The poorest residents, and not big waste companies, are the backbone of the city’s recycling infrastructure.

The more than 200 e-waste recyclers that gathered beneath the large tent (set up by Chintan in the middle of the street) came to organize and have their voices heard.

The string of recyclers spoke of starting an association or union of informal recyclers. They spoke of legalizing their operations and creating a licensing system so that they could operate without being harassed. They talked about getting space to operate safely and they demanded running water, electricity and medical care so that they could protect their health and improve the health of their families.

Unlike the US, the Indians have created a system where waste of all kinds have value. The stark differences in the US and Indian systems re-enforced the notion that each country needs to find its own ways to safely handle e-waste. And in Delhi the poor and low income communities should not be cut out of this process.

The meeting ran late and most of the predominately Islamic audience was observing Ramadan, the month in which many Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset. Despite the lateness in the day, the audience patiently listened as Lauren and I showed pictures of San Jose based ECS recyclers (a pledge signer) and pointed out the safety features and equipment (mask, goggles, shoes, ear plugs) used by responsible US recyclers.

After the meeting, several recyclers expressed interest in the precious metals extraction processes and the safety equipment used by the dismantlers. However, most of the recyclers concluded that if they had the warehouse space and the proper safety equipment they could be more efficient at manually dismantling the electronics as the big crushing machines used in the US and European Union.

I left the recyclers feeling very hopeful that India’s informal sector will upgrade their operations and continue to be the backbone of India’s recycling infrastructure. In the meantime I am also very hopeful that the US will stop dumping US e-waste in India (please encourage your representative to support the congressional resolution) and encourage manufacturers to invest in e-waste systems that enable US to handle its own hazardous waste and acknowledge that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to global e-waste recycling. True environmental sustainability is about investing in people and places where the products are made, used and recycled as well as “greening” the products.

I saw the Kya aapko Kam Insurance Lene ki Bimari (KILB) add campaign by AEGON Religare and I thought

I saw the Kya aapko Kam Insurance Lene ki Bimari (KILB) add campaign by AEGON Religare and I thought of writing some of my views and experiences that I have had with Insurance... Of course, I am NOT gonna write on topics like Why Insurance? Which Company? How much? should one go for money back or pure insurance? etc. I guess there are already 100s of articles on web for them...

This is my 4th fiscal where I am adding on insurance policies to my portfolio. When I thought of taking insurance, I had lot of surfing throughout the web that gave me numerous ideas and confusions... I decided to go for a Money Back policy over pure insurance... So those against Money Back policies may drop reading here... This write up does not consider Money Back policies over Pure Insurance polices or vice-versa...

So I decided on Money back policy and did a custom plan to take a money back policy each year so that my returns from earlier policies in turn pay my next premiums... Also after a initial bust in the premiums the rest years premiums remain constant and fairly low... Lets take an example... Suppose I take Life Insurance Corporation's (LIC) Jeevan Surabhi policy with Policy term as 20 years and policy paying term as 15 yrs for 4 lac at the age of 24 (year 2006). So the numbers look like this-

Notice the asterisks (*), these would be the years where my total money going from my pocket is high... This is how most of us, take a policy... And in-case if in any of these asterisk years, if your personal finances get disturbed, then you are at a risk... And the probability of this risk hitting is quite reasonable as the number of asterisks are more...

So instead of this, I took the same cover across 4 yrs... I divided the 4 lac policy into 1 lac each and took it over 4 years... Now the numbers look like this-

Here you can note that the number of asterisks have gone down from 12 to 3! And the net amount going from my pocket is quite low, constant and manageable... Also the risks (asterisk) are taken care of in the initial years, where one can devote more funds as one has less responsibility and can save more (spouse, kids, etc)... If you have Girl Friend(s), then God save U!!! ;-)

Some passing tips:

- Also breaking the policy into smaller chunks gives you an option to drop some premiums in case of a problem, and continue with part of the insurance policies, instead of going without cover, if you cannot pay the complete premium for a single big policy...

- Further spanning the policies taken over a few years gives you more time of your changing insurance needs so that you can go for lower/higher covers in subsequent years...

- I also made sure that I have the dates and premium installments (yearly, half-yearly and quarterly) scheduled in such a fashion that I have to pay some premium each month... This helped me make regular monthly payments and not bother about a chunk installment that lies 5 months down the line from today. You can also go for Electronic Clearing Service (ECS) if making monthly payment manually bothers you.

- Note: Most of the agents will not agree to this plan, as they don't want to let go a big chunk at the start, and get it distributed over years... I too found it difficult to convince my agent; though later he appreciated the strategy and also recommended to few of his clients...

O Henry Kwan, Vice President of sales της εταιρείες αποκάλυψε πολλά στοιχεία για το νέο netbook της εταιρείας σε συνέντευξη που παραχώρησε στο laptop magazine.

ECS is going to take part in the US netbook battle with their 3G-enabled G10IL Netbook. The term

ECS is going to take part in the US netbook battle with their 3G-enabled G10IL Netbook. The term 'netbook' was initially coined by Intel for describing potential small, low-cost systems with roughly enough power to only surf the net, powered by Intel's ATOM CPU. Formerly named UMPC (ultra mobile PC) and MID (mobile internet device) - officials now try to avoid those 'brandings' and love to use now the more appealing term 'netbook': Netbook is 'hype' - well...

Anyway, Asus first launched its prototype 'netbook' Eee PC and other manufacturers are dealing with Asus' success, now introducing more and more new models, with more features. ECS vice president of sales Henry Kwan says that the ECS G10IL netbook will set itself apart from the netbook masses. Kwan says that the G10IL will feature EDGE, HSUPA, and HSPDA mobile broadband support, but will not feature support for WiMAX. So the ECS G10IL netbook will be available as 8.9-inch and 10-inch sized models. Most likely the larger 10-inch version will hit the U.S. stores in September first. Prices starting at $399.
