BUENOS AIRES, oct 12 (DyN) - Los dos colosos del fútbol sudamericano, Argentina y Brasil, terminaron hoy como escoltas del líder Paraguay la primera rueda de las Eliminatorias Sudamericanas para el Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010.

Brasil y Ecuador fueron los ganadores de los dos partidos que se desarrollaron durante la jornada del domingo para completar el noveno episodio.

Los dirigidos por Dunga aplastaron a la nuevamente frágil selección de Venezuela 4-0 en el Estadio Pueblo Nuevo, de San Cristóbal, con conquistas de Robinho (en dos ocasiones), Kaká y Adriano.

Ese holgado triunfo le permitió a Brasil totalizar 16 puntos y superar a los argentinos en las posiciones por diferencia de gol (+11 contra +7).

Por su parte, Ecuador con el 1-0 ante Chile, en el Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, de Quito, logró tres unidades que lo revitalizan en su lucha por clasificarse para la próxima Copa del Mundo.

El delantero Christian Benítez aportó la diferencia en el marcador que merecieron ecuatorianos y que los pone, en forma transitoria, en una pelea cabeza a cabeza con los uruguayos por la quinta colocación, la que entrega la chance de afrontar un repechaje ante un representante de la Concacaf.

En ese cotejo los anfitriones terminaron con diez jugadores por la expulsión del volante Antonio Valencia, pero los chilenos sufrieron por dos tarjetas rojas, las que recibieron los defensores defensores Ismael Fuentes y Gonzalo Jara.

La salida forzada de Fuentes, a los 19 minutos del primer tiempo, perjudicó en demasía los planes de Marcelo Bielsa.

Pero el conductor rosarino tendrá que recurrir a su ingenio para definir el equipo que el miércoles próximo recibirá al seleccionado de la AFA, ya que por amarillas tampoco tendrá disponibles al mediocampista Roberto Cereceda y al habilidoso delantero Alexis Sánchez.

A pesar del revés Chile cuenta con 13 puntos y ocupa el cuarto puesto, por lo que, por ahora, dispone de la última plaza disponible para acceder en forma directa a la magna competencia que se realizará en Sudáfrica.

La fecha se había empezado a jugar el sábado, cuando Argentina doblegó a Uruguay 2-1, en el Monumental; Paraguay celebró el 1-0 ante Colombia, en El Campín, de Bogotá, y Bolivia apabulló a Perú 3-0, en el Hernando Siles, de La Paz.

Parece que es de mala suerte estar optimistas antes de un partido de nuestra selección, siempre que existe un exceso de confianza en el equipo dirigido por Bielsa, perdemos. Contra Brasil el optimismo era total y los brasileros nos taparon la boca, menos mal que a Colombia le ganamos, pero ante Ecuador nadie creía en una derrota, el más pesimista apostaba por un empate y finalmente caímos por 1-0 en un partido fome y lleno de malas decisiones arbitrales para los dos lados.

En la mitad del primer tiempo, expulsan a Ismael “Chupallita” Fuentes, lo que marcaría un antes y un después del partido ya que el esquema ofensivo de Bielsa, tuvo que deformarse, para dar paso a un enredo total. Si a lo último le sumamos la poca presencia de Mark González y el egoísmo de Chupete Suazo hicieron de Chile un equipo poco claro, confuso y jugando a nada.

En el segundo tiempo, cuando el partido transcurría en una total intrascendencia, Bravo se equivocó en un tiro de esquina y Benítez, quien apareció por detrás de todos, puso la cabeza para establecer el 1-0 en el marcador.

Los minutos restantes tuvieron más lucha que juego. Tal es así que Luis Valencia, en Ecuador, fue expulsado producto de duras entradas aunque el marcador ya no sufriría modificaciones.

Chile sigue cuarto en la clasificación general pero Uruguay y Ecuador están al acecho. El miercoles 15 de Octubre, Chile se enfrentará contra Argentina, lo que será el desafío más grande en estas eliminatorias al Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010.

La selección de Ecuador venció 1-0 a su similar de Chile en partido correspondiente a la fecha 9 de las eliminatorias sudamericanas rumbo al mundial de Sudáfrica 2010, disputado en el Estadio Atahualpa de Quito.

Cristian Benitez, del Santos Laguna mexicano, anotó el único gol del encuentro tras una errónea salida del arquero chileno Bravo, y tres jugadores fueron expulsados: Ismael Fuentes y Gonzalo Jara para los visitantes, y Antonio Valencia para Ecuador.

Fue precisamente luego de la expulsión de Fuentes que el cuadro dirigido por Marcelo Bielsa se descompuso, pues el "Loco" incluso decidió sacar a Matías Fernández, el principal armador de su equipo, para no perder fuerza en la defensa.

Ecuador tampoco hizo mucho para ganar el encuentro, aunque sí tuvo en el final dos oportunidades claras de gol, que Claudio Bravo salvó para evitar una caída aun mayor de la "Roja".

Con esta victoria, Ecuador subió al sexto lugar de la tabla en las eliminatorias con 12 puntos y entró de nuevo a la pelea por un lugar en Sudáfrica 2010, mientras que Chile permaneció en la cuarta posición con 13 unidades, pero con un rival difícil este miércoles en Santiago: la selección de Argentina.

Mit dem Teufelsklo haben wir (Stehpi, Anneke und ich) am Samstag unsere erste Bekanntschaft gemacht. Naja, eigentlich war es Stephi. Wir waren in unserem Lieblingsrestaurant zum Essen und waren eigentlich schon am Gehen, als Stephi noch schnell aufs Klo wollte. 5 Minuten spaeter hat mein Handy geklingelt. Stephi: Hey Annika, kannst du mal kommen? Ich komm nicht mehr raus...!" Ja, die Tuer ging auch leider wirklich nichtmehr auf. Aber keine Sorge, ich hab einfach den Besitzer geholt, der dann auch gleich mit dem Schluessel ankam. Aber auch das viele ruetteln und drehen und klopfen hat die Tuer nicht sonderlich beeindruckt. Sie blieb zu... Da hat der Besitzer nur gemeint, er holt mal einen Techniker (wohlgemerkt, es war Samstagnacht). In der Zwischenzeit hat Lauras ecuadorianischer Freund die Tuer weiter bearbeitet. Nach und nach fiel dann der Tuergriff ab, aber die Tuer blieb zu. Stephi wollt schon durchs Fenster in die Kueche klettern, doof nur, dass ihr Fuss total dick war und sie eigentlich nicht laufen konnte, und das Fenster genau ueber dem Herd war, auf dem grad das Essen vor sich hingekocht hat... Nach unbestimmter Zeit kam auch endlich der Besitzer wieder. Zwar nicht mit einem Techniker, dafuer aber mit einer Leiter :-). Die Tuer war inzwischen schon so weit, dass der Tuergriff ganz ab war und man zu Stephi reinschauen konnte. Die sass ganz gelangweilt auf der Kloschuessel und hat gewartet... Da meint Laura nur: "Stephi, kannst du mal noch kurz warten? Die Kueche ist grad in Benutzung...!" Anneke und ich haben uns die ganze Zeit eigentlich nur halbtot gelacht und auch die restlichen Besucher fanden die Situation glaub ich recht komisch... Nach sagenhaften 55 Minuten auf dem Teufelsklo, hat die Tuer endlich nachgegeben und Stephi war befreit :-)!
Dann konnten wir endlich los ins "La Jampa" einer der zwei Discos in Otavalo. Der Abend war auch recht lustig, obwohl Stephi und ich eigentlich den ganzen Abend nur an der Bar sassen. Ich war noch total fertig und musste Antibiotika nehmen und Stephi konnte nicht laufen... Der Arzt hat zu ihr gemeint, das kommt von den vielen Mueckenstichen und sie muss die ganze Woche Zuhause bleiben und Kamillenumschlaege machen. 5 mal am Tag, jedes mal 5 mal, jedes mal 5 Minuten... Auch nicht schlecht, oder?

Am Montag gings dann endlich auch wieder los nach Cambugan. Die Amoeben waren besiegt und der Durchfall ueberwunden. Als ich ankam, standen ploetzlich lauter Jungs in meinem Alter auf dem Schulhof, die ich noch nie zuvor gesehen hab. Da hat mir dann die Lehrerin erzaehlt, dass es seit heute, also seit Montag, ein Colegio in Cambugan gibt. Also so was wie eine weiterfuerende Schule ab 8. Klasse. Auch nicht schlecht. Da waren also einfach mal 30 neue Kinder und 2 neue Lehrerinnen in Cambugan. Ja, gut dass auch alles wieder so gut organisiert war, und die einfach festgestellt haben, dass ja das ganze Essen fuer 30 Kinder mehr eigentlich gar nicht reicht... Aber was solls, irgendwie klappt hier doch immer alles.

Seit es das Colegio gibt, hab ich auch eine neue Gastschwester. Jeanette hat zuvor in Quito als Hausmaedchen gearbeitet und ist jetzt fuers Colegio wieder da. Die ist 17 und total nett. Ich glaub das wird noch lustig mit ihr. Aber dadurch, dass sie seit 7 Jahren oder so nicht mehr in der Schule war, hat sie einfach alles vergessen. Sie kann nicht mal mehr das ABC aufsagen... So kams eben, dass ich mit ihr abends das 1x1 geuebt hab und ihr das ABC nochmal beigebracht hab. Sind ja immerhin ziemlich wichtige Sachen...

Montag hab ich auch erstmal meinen gekauften Geburtstagsschokokuchen ueberreicht. Manuelito hatte letzten Dienstag Geburtstag, aber leider war ich da ja nicht in Cambugan, sonder mit meinen Amoeben am Sofa. Aber ich glaub, sie haben sich trotzdem richtig gefreut, und dann macht es ja nichts, ob der Kuchen gekauft ist und dazu noch eine Woche zu spaet...

Anfang letzter Woche hat es total viel geregnet. Da kam montagabend meine Gastmutter in mein "Zimmer" und hat gefragt, ob Wasser durchkommt. Ich hab natuerlich ohne gross zu ueberlegen an die Decke geschaut und hab gemeint: "Nein, ich seh nichts!" Da meint sie nur: "Doch hier, und hier...!" Ja sie hat wohl doch schon mehr Erfahrung in solchen Dingen und hat im Gegensatz zu mir einfach auf den Boden geschaut, und auf die deutlich sichtbaren Wasserflecken gezeigt. Kurzum hatte sie auch schon ihren Kaugummi aus dem Mund geholt und auf das Loch geklebt. Dann brach kurzzeitig Panik aus. Es gabt keine Kaugummies mehr. Das war der letzte... Aber man ist ja nicht dumm. Einfach kurz ein bisschen Brotteig angeruehrt, und schon waren alle Loecher in der Decke mit Brotteig verklebt. Eigentlich gar keine schlechte Loesung und so schlimm hat es auch nicht mehr durchgeregnet. Nur hatte ich am naechsten Morgen ueberall Brotteigbollen auf meinem Bett :-). Nachmittags haben mir zum Glueck auch eine Plastikfolie aufs Teufelsdach gelegt. Jetzt regnets nicht mehr rein, und wir haben auch wieder Brot zum Essen :-).

Donnerstag und Freitag hatte ich Schulfrei. Donnerstag hatten die Lehrer irgendweinen Kurs, und der Feiertag "Tag von Guayaquil", der eigentlich am Donnerstag waere, wurde einfach kurzerhand auf Freitag verlegt. So kams, dass ich schon am Donnerstagmorgen um 7 Uhr wieder in Otavalo war. Ohne lang zu troedeln, haben Stephi und ich gleich unsre Sachen gepackt und sind zum Busterminal gelaufen. Nachdem wir nun schon seit fast 8 Wochen jedesmal den Kopf schuetteln, wenn wir am Terminal wieder den "QUITO, QUITO, A QUITO!!!!" Busschreiern begegnen, konnten wir diesmal grinsend nicken. Schon sassen wir zwei im Bus nach Quito. Die Fahr war relativ unspektakulaer und nach gut 2 Stunden fahre standen wir in Quito am Terminal. Von da an ging unsre Reise weiter, nach Riobamba. Das liegt ca. 4 Stunden suedlich von Quio. Auf der Fahrt haben wir gleichmal unseren gesamten Reiseproviant aufgebraucht. Das waren bescheidene 8 Broetchen, 9 Mandarinen, 2 Packungen Chips, Kekse und Cola...
So gegen 18 Uhr sind wir endlich in Riobamba angekommen und gleich mal zum Bahnhof gegangen, um Karten fuer den Zug "Nariz del Diablo" zu kaufen, mit dem wir am naechsten Tag fahren wollten. Das hat auch alles wunderbar geklappt, nur der Kartenverkaeufer hat mir einen falschen 5 Dollar-Schein zurueckgegeben. Natuerlich hab ich das nicht gemerkt, und wollte damit in einem Laden bezahlen. Dort haben sie zu mir nur gemeint, der ist falsch, den nehmen wir nicht... Ja gut, dann hab ichs natuerlich auch gesehen, dass der anders aussah als die anderen. Hab einfach ganz frech in einem Restaurant damit bezahlt, und bin ganz schnell rausgelaufen :-). Jetzt weiss ich auch, dass man am besten immer das Geld ganz genau anschaut...

Die Nacht haben wir in einem relativ ekligen Hostal verbracht. Zufaellig haben wir im Fernsehn noch das Finale von "Latin American Idol" (Suedamerika sucht den Superstar), die Vorschau von "Brazil´s next Topmodel" und einen Ausschnitt von "Estrellas en el hielo" (Stars on ICE) geschaut. Nach einer ziemlich lauten Nacht im Hostal, sind wir morgens um 6 Uhr zum Bahnhof gelaufen. Der Zug stand auch schon da, und fast alle Leute sassen bereits auf dem Dach. Das ist naemlich das tolle an dem Zug, dass man auf dem Dach sitzen kann. Da haben wir es uns dann auch auf unseren gemieteten Sitzkissen gemuetlich gemacht. Sarah und Sophia waren auch noch dabei, die sind nur extra nach Riobamba gefahren. Puenktlich um 7 Uhr hat sich der Zug in Bewegung gesetzt. Ich war schon total ueberrascht, immerhin sind wir ja in Ecuador... Nach 10 Minuten hat der Zug jedoch wieder angehalten, und ist die ganze Strecke rueckwaerts wieder in den Bahnhof rein gefahren. Da ist dann noch eine ecuadorianische Familie zugestiegen, die wohl nicht rechtzeitig aus dem Bett gekommen sind... Also sind wir eben um halb 8 Uhr, mit einer halben Stunde Verspaetung, losgefahren. Die Fahrt ging durch Wiesen und Waeder, ueber Fluesse und Felder. Ueberall an den Strassen haben Autos angehalten und uns gewunken uns uns fotografiert. In den Feldern standen Kinder und haben uns froehlich gewunken. Ich kam mir ja ein bisschen vor wie die Queen :-)... Mit dem Wetter hatten wir auch echt Glueck. Es war Bewoelkt, aber immerhin hat es nicht geregnet und ab und zu ist sogar die Sonne rausgekommen. Um 11 Uhr sind wir in Alausi angekommen und nach kurzer Pinkelpause ging es zum wohl spannendsten Stueck der Strecke, zur Teufelsnase. Irgendwan hielt der Zug an, und alle haben angefangen Fotos von einem komischen Berg zu machen. Wir wussten gar nicht so recht, was eigentlich los war, und haben einfach auf gut Glueck auch mal ein Foto gemacht :-). Spaeter haben wir rausgefunden, dass der Berg die "Nariz del Diablo" war und so heisst, weil damals 3000 Menschen gestorben sind, als sie die Schienen an dem Berg gebaut haben... Achso... Aber ich hab mir das eigentlich ein bisschen spannender vorgestellt. Von da gings mit ungefaehr 10 000 Zwischenstops wieder zurueck nach Alausi. Von dort sind wir mit dem Bus zurueck nach Riobamba gefahren.

Abends wollten wir noch ein bisschen weggehen, mit 2 Canadiern, die wir schon in Otavalo kennengelernt hatten. Nur leider musste man fuer alle Bar total viel Eintritt zahlen, und da wir uns nicht betrinken wollten, sind wir letzendlich in einer Karaoke-Bar gelandet. Da wars echt total lustig. Haben natuerlich auch fleissig Lieder ausgesucht. Die Auswahl an englischen Liedern war zwar nicht besonders gross, trotzdem haben wir insgesamt 7 Lieder gesungen. Das war total lustig, weil der englische Text total falsch geschrieben war und teilweise wirklich grottenfalsch war... Aber das haben die ganzen Ecuadorianer sowieso nicht gemerkt. Die haben alle immer nur spanische Liebesschnulzen gesungen, die sich alle gleich angehoert haben... Und wie so vieles, hatte die Sachen eben auch einen Haken. Wir mussten am Ende fuer jedes Lied $0,25 bezahlen... Das waren bei den 7 Liedern stolze $1,75! Aber gut, was macht man nicht alles...

Am naechsten morgen, die Nacht haben wir in einem anderen, wirklich schoenen Hostal verbracht, sind wir gemuetlich wieder nach Otavalo zurueckgefahren. Aber nicht, ohne nicht nochmal richtig schoen zu fruehstuecken. Wir haben sogar eine Baeckerei gefunden, in der es richtige Croisants und superleckere Baguettes gab! Die 7 Stunden Fahrt nach Otavalo kamen mir vor wie eine Ewigkeit und ich war einfach nur froh, als wir wieder in unserem Freiwilligenhaus ankamen. Dort wartete noch ein super Geburtstagspaecken von Michi auf mich!!! Da war der Tag dann doch noch gerettet :-)

Schaut doch auch mal wieder bei "Impressionen" vorbei... :-)

Zuerst fuhren wir mit dem TeleferiQo rauf auf ca. 4000m um dann die letzten 700m zum Gipfel zu wandern. Das Klang einfacher als gedacht. Ist doch die Luft auf 4000-4.600m doch erheblich dünner als auf den angenehmen 2.800m im Tal von Quito. Die Aussicht war Anfangs noch prima wurde aber später noch recht neblig.

Aber warum pinche Pinchincha? Nunja, daich nicht bis zum Gipfel ging nachdem mir plötlich schwarz vor Augen wurden und ich zum Glück in ein Gebüsch fiel. War aber nicht sonderlich schlimm, fehlten mir vieleicht noch ca. 80-100m - doch geht Sicherheit bekanntlich vor...

Der Abstieg war dann sehr lustig - da man im Nebel nicht weit sah, dafür aber wie ne Gemse den Weg lang springen konnte. Auch die Schüler die uns entgegen kamen waren zum schiessen. Sie frugen ob oben auf dem Gipfel Schnee liegt. Wir antworten: "Ja - ein wenig." Daraufhin wurden sie ganz aufgeregt und riefen immer wieder: "¡Nieve, nieve!" Spätestens als es dann anfing zu schneien, oder besser zu hageln wurden sie vollends histerisch und schrien: "¡¡¡NIEVE!!!"

Con motivo del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones DOMUND, a celebrarse el 19 de octubre de 2008, desde la oficina Nacional de Obras Misionales Pontificias, se han entregado un millón de estampitas con la imagen de la Santa ecuatoriana y una Oración que guiará la jornada solidaria en favor de las misiones de este año.

Tragedy struck though this last week as Chelito died at first mysteriously. Later it came out  he died because of pneumonia and that his cage was kept very dirty, and that the workers at the zoo were likely at fault for his pre-mature death. In response on Friday, a nationl holiday for the celebration if Guayaquil´s independence, children off from school and adults off from work came out and participated in a solidarity march for Chelito and a calm, but passionate protest for animal rights. And of course to express their disappointment in the lose of their friend and collective pet.

There were hundreds of people in the march that went through the city and then gathered in Loja’s San Sebastian plaza. People carried yellow, orange and white balloons in the spirit of giraffe colors and everything wore white t-shirts. There were even two girls wearing giraffe costumes and  a women who dressed her dog up like a giraffe, with an orange suit and little giraffe ears attached to the top.  The celebration in the plaza included children reading their letters to Chelito expressing their sadness. Also there were songs, dance and passionate speeches about the rights of animals. Even small children held up signs that said things like, "Zoologico Municipal sin autoridades competentes," which of course means the zoo lacks compentent oversight.

I was really glad I attended this event and couldn´t help but think that in the US something of this nature would be written off as a crazy hippie animal rights protest and would not have the mainstram nature of this event. What I loved is how many parents brought their children and how they were thus showing them how to have a voice when they are upset or have been wronged. To me this seems to ensure that the next generation will be empowered to continue to speak out and work for a better Loja and Ecuador for all, including the animals amongst us.

Which is why false-flag operations would not be a surprise in the region aside from what has been conspired with regards to regional parties; for only the U.S. and Israel have a track record for containing the rise of the supposed "Islamo-Fascists."  There are many Muslim and/or Arab enclaves in South and Central America.  The overwhelming majority have absolutely no Islamist-agenda within the respective countries they live.  Yet it would not take too much to get public opinion against this, while at the same time showing Latinos that the U.S. is still needed to champion 'democracy and freedom'-- just as the U.S. was needed to infiltrate and control select countries by way of the Drug Trade, and let's not forget our own colonial history in the region.

El papa Benedicto XVI el dia de ayer presidió la ceremonia de santificación de la noboleña Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán. Ella es la tercera, después de Mariana de Jesús y el Hermano en convertirse en Santa para la iglesia católica ecuatoriana.

Como un regalo por las fiestas de Octubre han recibido los guyaquileños la satificación de Narcisa de Jesús que coincide con la celebración de las fiestas de Independencia de Guayaquil y durante este mismo mes la conmemoración el Día del Bombero, el Descubrimiento de Amércia y el Día del Montubio.

The UK lies behind Peru and El Salvador.

Now given this report was a survey of the world's economists whose advice our banks were no doubt taking; should we believe it?

Are the UK's banks really behind Peru, El Salvador and Senegal?

Or is it an accurate representation that is slightly out of date, compiled as it was slightly before the bail-outs?

That must depend on whether you believe the bail-outs will work.

If reports are to be believed the Royal Bank of Scotland is next in line to be nationalised tomorrow. If that happens then there will be further pressure on the remaining UK bank's to be nationalised too. The banking sector could be picked off one by one by the market and the taxpayer forced to pick up the tab.

On that Iain Dale post there have already been comments about the English taxpayer bailing out the Scottish bank.

It must be a pity, to all those who carp, that Scotland is not already independent.

An independent Scotland with a similar oil fund like our neighbour Norway could be similarly insulated from these turbulent times.

It would also have the economic levers to maintain its economy best, not just for the South-East of England as remains the case today. Remember Eddie George, the former Governor of the Bank of England: Unemployment in the north is a price worth paying for affluence in the South!

Although the credit crunch is global, take a look back at those rankings.

Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands. All small countries lying in the top 10.

Even Ireland, who have recently guaranteed all deposits in their banks, are sitting 9th.

The argument that Scotland is too small to be financially unstable is farcical! I don't hear anyone saying that Denmark is too small and should be run from Berlin. (Not since the days of Adolf Hitler and the Second World War anyway!)

As countries large and small struggle with the credit credit crunch from the U.S. and Russia down to Iceland with its 300 000 population, this population argument of independence must be seen to be invalid. Iceland, with a population slightly smaller than North Lanarkshire, isn't exactly Miramont Gardens in Pimlico!

What matters now is that we take the right decisions to get out this mess.

Those decisions may be different for each country. They may even be different for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

That's why its important key economic levers are devolved away from Westminster.

Otherwise the Eddie George syndrome will hamper 'the North' recovering for years.

people go to riobamba for a bunch of touristy reasons, to hike in the andes and stuff.  we went to ride the train.  the train in riobamba is the only surviving length of the transandean railway, and goes up and down a mountain called the Devil´s Nose using a series of switchbacks that are said to be an engineering marvel.  it was pretty cool, the train would back down one length of track and then go frontways down another and then backwards again.  but it wasn´t the coolest part of the trainride.  the best part was just riding the train through the countryside and seeing a completely different part of Ecuador.  it was cold.  it was GREEN.  there were farms and fields and animals. the farms are hand worked, which is amazing and awful.  we watched people hand planting their fields.  knowing that people from the sierra, with farms such as these are the people that bring food down to duran and sell it to us made it very impactful. they did some great terraced farming on the mountains though.  very cool.  I took a lot of pictures of farms.  and mountains.  there were mountains.  that was nice and different from duran as well.

we went to mass at a church in riobamba and accidentally crashed a wedding.  but no one kicked us out...so it must not have been invitation only.  we definitely stood out, as gringos dressed in jeans and tshirts and hoodies.  not wedding attire.  it was the same type of wedding ceremony though, minus the fact that after the people got married their children got baptised in the church.  it was a big day for sacraments.

we took hot showers and didn´t take military showers.  it was amazing.  first hot showers in ecuador and soooo good.  we also wasted water and flushed the toilet whenever we wanted.  freedom!

it was very touristy.  it was weird and kind of nice to not be seen as unusual anymore.  people were used to seeing gringos everywhere so we didn´t stand out.  here, we stand out.  sometimes it was annoying; we had our self-righteous moments (I´m better than you because I LIVE here and you´re just visiting) but we also had moments where we realised that we actually do think about things different than the usual tourists.  we would never never think of throwing candy off the train to the children as a good idea (welcome to the gringo parade).  we would never pull out our camera on the bus (asking to get robbed, yes.  pointing out that we have significantly more money than you, yes).  we would never do anything to distance ourselves from ecuadorians (like quickly recline your seat on the bus so that your friend wouldn´t have to sit next to the cute elderly woman from the campo, yeah we saw you irish guys).

Pero hay 2 partidos que están teñidos de dolor y dramatismo.
La primera ocurrió en 1981. Chile daba el puntapié inicial a España ´82, pero a los 32 minutos del primer tiempo se supo que el Presidente de Ecuador, Jaime Roldós había fallecido en un accidente aéreo. En la memoria quedará el pésame que recibió el equipo ecuatoriano durante el inicio del segundo tiempo por parte de los jugadores chilenos... el partido terminó empatado sin goles.

El segundo hecho sucedió en 1985. En Quito, Chile obtiene un empate a 1-1 por su intento de ir a México ´86... pero a las pocas horas de finalizado el encuentro, la zona central de Chile es azotada por un violento terremoto.
En ese lejano 3 de Marzo de 1985, las comunicaciones eran más complejas, no había celulares, ni internet y para llamar por larga distancia, había que rogar que una operadora tomara el llamado. El seleccionado chileno vivió horas de incertidumbre y angustia, desconectados de Chile y sus seres queridos.

A título experiencial, permítannos esbozar algunos lienamientos del por qué muchos ecuatorianos no se acercan a sufragar cuando de elecciones nacionales de trata. No se debe a falta de patriotismo, tampoco se debe a ignorancia de los acontecimientos mas bién es una falta de interés, porque el inmigrante ecuatoriano no ve ningún beneficio inmediato de parte de quien resulte elegido en tal o cual contienda política. Prefiere pagar sus impuestos para cuando va al Ecuador y hasta pagar la multas por no haberse calificado, re-calificado o no haber botado.

Ahora, es cierto que debido a las grandes distancias en las que se vive en ciudaddes metrópoli, asi como las condiciones de trabajo estén afectando la presencia de los votantes ecuatorianos en el exterior pero cuan lejos está la afirmación de Jorge Acosta, presidente del Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE), quien trata de justificar la inasistencia, debido al miedo de los ecuatorianos ilegales en el exterior ante una posible deportación. Acaso todos los ecuatorianos viviendo en el exterior entran en éste rubro?

El presidente del TSE debería mas bien preocuparse de cómo justificar que cada voto en el exterior le cueste al Ecuador 29 dólares en omparación con los solo 5 que le significan a los nacionales. O de cómo es posible que solo en viáticos el Ecuador haya gastado en las últimas elecciones, cerca de $ 150 mil y que cada empleado haya recibido un promedio de $ 333 diarios por concepto de viáticos. Qué comian y donde dormian esos señores para gastar tanto en un solo dia, considerando que estaban trabajando, pues a sus ingresos diarios los viáticos deben ser sumados con sus salarios. Hagan la cuenta.

Los ecuatorianos no van a votar por que esperan que los servicios en linea se mejoren, aunque el webiste de la embajada en New York es aceptable, el de New Jersey si que da pena. Si usted quiere entrar por cualquier información, el unico link que funciona es el de Sevicios pero hasta ahí llega, si quiere seguir, salado!

No sé que esté sucediendo en las otras embajadas (no me preocupa) pero aún el Consulado Virtual sobre el que hay grandes esperanzas, está inoperable. Y completando nuestra referencia en la zona tri-estatal, los ciudadanos ecuatorianso en Connecticut están felices de la apertura de su Consulado, esperemos que el website que se instale sea mejor que los que hemos mecionado. María Cárdenas (residente de New Heaven, CT) ya nos deja sentir su júbilo: "Yo ni se quien será usted señor Cónsul, pero me alegro que el Consulado esté en New Haven y en la One Church Street, en pleno centro de la ciudad. Seguramente pida nuestro apoyo para que se queden por siempre aquí y nos eviten madrugar y perder el día en New York"

Yo no estuve empadronado y no he ido a votar desde que salí del Ecuador, usted lo ha hecho?

By generating more trade with the U.S., it is believed that less people in these countries would turn to the illegal drug trade.  This, in turn, would lead to regional prosperity, stability, and democracy in the beneficiary countries.  Increased exports from the region to the U.S. should have generated new markets, jobs, and attracted people away from illegal drug cultivation and trade. The general idea is a good one.  But it is just one of many tools in the U.S. policy arsenal for combatting the illegal narcotics trade.  

The underlying legal regime is the Andean Trade Promotion Drug Eradication Act, or ATPDEA.  The ATPDEA has been amended and extended several times since it was first signed into law in 1992.  The law is going to expire at the end of this year.  Why should American taxpayers care one way or the other about ATPDEA extension?  For starters, getting a political return on our investment would be a good thing. 

In order for ATPDEA to be effective, cooperation is necessary.  ATPDEA should have been a temporary program.  The law has the express aim of working toward a completed negotiation of a Free Trade Area of the Americas by the year 2005. That deadline came and went.  With the exceptions of Colombia and Peru, the ATPDEA appears to have  outlived its long-term effectiveness.  A new tool may be needed.

With regards to Ecuador and Bolivia, an ATPDEA extension should not be granted.  

In Ecuador, Rafael Correa and his supporters are turning that country into a "democratic" police state.  A new constitution, that among other things grants rights to inanimate objects such as trees, has created a new legal regime that legalizes illegal drugs.  In direct contravention of the ATPDEA, Ecuador is serving as a terrorist haven for Colombian terrorists, the FARC, along the Colombian-Ecuador border region.  As if this were not enough to call into question ATPDEA's effectiveness, the new Ecuadorean Constitution puts to an end, forever, cooperation with U.S. counternarcotics efforts in the Andean region.

Ecuador has announced that the ten year lease for the U.S. counternarcotics facility in Manta, Ecuador will not be renewed next year; they want the U.S. inter-agency unit out.  U.S. taxpayers have invested more than $70 million at Manta.  These funds were used for, among other things, a brand new runway, air traffic control tower, and fire department.  All of these resources are put to good use by the locals for commercial purposes.  Once we leave, expect either the Chinese, who manage the nearby deep water port, or the Venezuelans, to take over facility.

Like Ecuador, Bolivia is currently led by an anti-American president, Evo Morales.  Morales's policies with regards to combating illegal drugs is abysmal.  For example, he is increasing the amount of legal coca cultivation, not decreasing it.  While there has been some wide-spread coca eradication efforts, it has been offset by Morales's policy of  "zero cocaine but not zero coca."  In other words, Morales is destroying just enough coca to keep U.S. taxpayer monies and assistance flowing.

Evo Morales has no interest in cooperating in regional counternarcotics efforts, quite the opposite.  Like Ecuador, he has no interest in advancing regional integration through a Free Trade Areas of the Americas, quite the opposite.  Both Ecuador and Bolivia seek regional integration through a Cuba-Venezuelan Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America and the Caribbean.  Morales is destroying Bolivia's democracy, crushing opposition through indiscriminate use of force, and pushing his country to the point of certain civil strife in the not too distant future. 

Through their actions, both Ecuador and Bolivia have demonstrated they are not serious about the principles established in the ATPDEA and the counternarcotics provisions of the Foreign Assistance Act.   They have violated the Interamerican Convention Against Corruption.  In the case of Ecuador, it is supporting a terrorist organization, the FARC, that is seeking to destabilize our staunchest ally in the region, Colombia. 

Depending on the outcome of the November elections, Congress may or may not return for a lame duck session.  If it does, it should focus on finalizing the Colombia Free Trade Agreement.  In the meantime, the Bush Administration should seriously consider designating Ecuador a terrorist haven for its assistance of the FARC and other terrorist groups.  And ATPDEA should not be extended for either country.   U.S. taxpayers should also demand a $70 million refund from Ecuador for breaking its commitment to the region to combat the illegal drug trade in the Andean region.

    संविधान में हुई यह तब्दीलियां किसी भावुकता से प्रेरित नहीं है । विदेशी तेल और खनन कम्पनियों द्वारा प्रदूषण और दोहन से यह मुल्क तंग रहा है । इक्वाडोर सरकार टेक्सको नामक कम्पनी द्वारा दुर्लभ जंगलों में फैलाये गये एक करोड़ ७० लाख टन पेट्रोलियम कचरे के बदले मुआवजे की लड़ाई लड़ रहा है ।

    सरकार को इस बात के लिए एहतियात बरतने होंगे और ऐसी रोक लगानी होगी जिनसे जैव प्रजातियां विलुप्त होने से बचें तथा नैसर्गिक चक्रों में स्थायी तौर पर तब्दीलियां न हों । जैविक सम्पदा को नष्ट करने वाले उत्पादों पर रोक होगी ।

    प्रकृति के लिए एन्डीज़ देवी 'पाचामामा' शब्द का प्रयोग इस संविधान में किया गया है । 'क्षिति,जल,पावक,गगन समीरा' - पंचभूतों से 'पाचामामा' का कोई नाता बनता है या नहीं ?

Lula manda cancelar viagem de delegação brasileira ao Equador: The president of Brazil cancels a visit by a trade delegation to Ecuador.

This story has been driving me crazy today, just because I had to write up a short note about it, and news on the main factual issue here -- has the government now "expelled" Construtora Norberto Odebrecht or not? -- seems contradictory.

O presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva mandou cancelar a viagem de uma comitiva brasileira ao Equador depois que o presidente equatoriano, Rafael Correa, decidiu expulsar a construtora Norberto Odebrecht do país.

President Lula ordered the visit of a Brazilian contingent to Ecuador canceled after Ecuadoran president decided to expel Odebrecht from the country.

He did? He decided that?

I had decided to write it up, in part, along the lines of "conflicting reports exist" as to the intentions of the Ecuadoran chief executive:

.... the Ecuadoran president has already decided to expel Odebrecht permanently from the country, the Jornal do Commercio reported, citing remarks by Galo Borjas, Ecuador's cabinet minister for strategic economic sectors, as he emerged from a meeting with President Rafael Correa.

The Ecuadoran daily El Comercio confirmed Borjas' remarks, and likewise reported that a definitive decision to expel Odebrecht has been reached by the government.

Always double check what the Brazilian press is saying about a neighboring country, especially if the source of their wire copy is Reuters. Reuters tends to just cut and paste "local press sources" without putting any boots on the ground. Cost efficiency, I guess. Which is I why I wound up also filing

El Universo of Guyaquil and other news sources, however, reported that Ecuadoran authorities will not reach a final conclusion until tests have been conducted on the San Francisco facility to determine whether electrical generation equipment there is functioning properly. El Universo cited Bernando Henriques, a presidential advisor on matters of energy infrastructure who attended the same meeting, as saying that a final decision would hinge, not on legal issues, but on how well the facility performs when brought back on line.

At issue: A big hydroelectric plant, ordered by the previous government, that stopped working within 6 months of delivery. Improperly seated turbines or some such thing.

El Universo reported that test runs will be made on 18 and 19 October, citing a written statement from Hidropastaza S.A., the plant's concessionaire, responsible for hiring the Odebrecht-led consortium to build and operate the plant.

Two different official government sources, who apparently attended the same meeting, reporting two different things.

It's called the South American Rashomon Effect.

Now Globo again:

A decisão foi divulgada nesta quinta-feira (9) em nota pelo Ministério das Relações Exteriores. A missão cancelada por Lula trataria de temas relacionados a investimentos em infra-estrutura.

The decision was published this Thursday, October 9, in a note by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The mission canceled by Lula was to deal with topics related to infrastructure investment.

An allegedly under-explored Petrobras field in the country, which Petrobras is abandoning to the Ecuadorans, was also part of the equation, I understand.

The thing is that I cannot find any such press statement on the Web site of the Ecuadoran Foreign Relations ministry, either under Foreign Trade or Foreign Policy.

Did Ecuador really issue such a statement today?

Or is Globo (this would be a first) reporting a nonexistent fact here?

I do a search of the whole Foreign Ministry Web site and find absolutely no reference to a statement by that ministry on that topic today.

Perhaps it was another ministry? Perhaps it was a private diplomatic communication? Perhaps the foreign ministry is slow to update its Web site with news about not inconsequential diplomatic feather-ruffling (although it did make a couple of other announcements today -- sanitation talks with Panama, something something.)

In any event, there is an error lurking in this report. And it drives me nuts. Maybe I should write to the Ecuadoran government and have them me fax over the document, if it exists.

Globo: Boil before consuming.

An earlier story by Globo on this matter, for example, made other misstatements about the nature of the dispute which I only figured out after actually reading the presidential decree (temporarily?) seizing Odebrecht property in Ecuador.

There are legal issues with the local contractor, Hidropastanza S.A., as well as technical issues.

If Globo had any professional integrity, it would quote the actual words of this supposed statement in its reporting on the issue.

Look, I would just like to be able to report reliably on what the president of Ecuador has decided. There are these people paying me (exceedingly) modestly to keep an eye on such things.

But the evidence Globo points me to for the proposition that he decided something does not seem to exist.

My favorite feature of the story, as presented on the G1 Web site: Under the "learn more" section, with links to related coverage, we find two contradictory headlines

• Odebrecht confirms signing accord with Ecuadoran government
• Odebrecht denies signing accord with Ecuadoran government

Obviously, Odebrecht has NOT reached agreement with the Ecuadoran government.

But if you prefer to believe it has, Globo has a coverage alternative for you!

You can read about the world as it is, or you can read about the world as you would like it to be. Globo gives you that choice!

Cuando vivía chelito

La jirafa más querida por todos lo lojanos y la única especie en el Ecuador ha muerto, me siento muy triste, era la principal atracción turística del Zoológico de "La banda" al norte de la ciudad de Loja.

Asi quedo después de su fallecimiento

Se manejan varias hipótesis de su muerte, posiblemente haya sido envenenada, pero eso todavía esta en investigación, ojalase aclare todo.

Todos vamos extrañar su gran amabilidad para recibir a los turista que tenia este animal, hace algunos meses atrás fue mi ultima visita a su morada, era muy amigable siempre se acercaba para que le den un poco de alimento y dejarse acariciar tranquilamente.

Así aprovechándose de su confianza, creo que personas que no solo quieren hacer daño al cabildo Lojano si no a toda la ciudad, pudieron haber dado en su alimento algún agente toxico, esperamos una pronta aclaración al tema ya que todos los que queríamos a "chelito" lo vamos a extrañar.

Esta era su casa

Muy amigable con todos, cariñoso, juguetón que a veces impartía miedo por su imponecia, pero a la final resultaba una experiencia única compartir la presencia del animal, así vamos a recordar todos los lojanos a este animal que llenó de alegría nuestras vidas.

Algunas personas y organizaciones llaman a una marcha pacifica en honor a chelito y pedir una explicación por su muerte y por el cuidado del resto de animales que viven en el zoológico.

El Consejo Nacional de Educación Superior (Conesup) se ha reunido con los rectores de universidades y autoridades de Gobierno para debatir la asignación de recursos y establecer los lienamiensotr sobre los que se ejecutará el mandato constitucional.

El problema está latente en las 28 universidades públicas ecuatorianas porque a decir de Gustavo Vega (presidente del Conesup) no existe un Ley de Educación Superior y se amplia cuando no existen tampoco lineamientos para las universidades cofinanciadas donde el Estado subevenciona entre el 15-18% de sus presupuestos.

No está definida la gratuidad vinculada a la responsabilidad académica. No queda claro si incluye segundas y terceras matrículas o si versará sobre la responsabilidad social de la institución, derechos de grado y si aplica para extranjeros ha dicho Vega.

La exigencia de los rectores, preocupados que históricamente el Estado no hace los desenvolsos para las universidades a debido tiempo, ha sido de que al mismo tiempo que inicia la gratuidad desde el primer día que se publique la Constitución, también deberá exigirse el pago puntual por parte del Gobierno.

Con la gratuidad se espera que mas secundarios entren a la universidad, pero al mismo tiempo incrementa la población estudiantil universiataria y por ende le presupueto, que está en tela de duda, como dijimos al inicio. Las universidades dejarán de cobrar además de sus matrículas, los rubros que se cobran por uso de laboratorios, otro tipo de infraestructura, Internet, espacios deportivos, derechos de grado, de exámenes, giras estudiantiles, entre otros.

No se socavará la vagancia ni habrá cómplicidad de la ineficiencia universitaria. Moisés Tacle ( Rector de la Espol) lo ha dicho enfáticamente, "no sacrificaremos la calidad educativa." La Espol se acogerá a la gratuidad pero ese beneficio deberá tener una contraparte de excelencia en los estudiantes!

La dirigen pastores y sicólogos que citan a los homosexuales una o dos veces por semana para terapias ($ 5 por sesión),  hablan de la Biblia y las causas de su “desviación”. “El fin no es el matrimonio, sino que entiendan su género y  vivan como varones”, explica la psicóloga Verónica Izaguirre a El Universo.

Sin embargo, hay quienes cuestionan sus métodos. Una mujer cuenta que le dijeron que, para que su hermana salga del lesbianismo, podían presentarle a un hombre que tiene problemas de adicción sexual.

Nelson Ballesteros, pastor de 50 años, también es consejero y –dice– “un homosexual rehabilitado. Fue duro comportarme como varón,  ya había tomado  la personalidad de una mujer”. Las hormonas le dieron senos,  formas y voz femeninas.

Hace 26 años comenzó a acercarse a Dios, pero ha enfrentado “recaídas”. Desde el 2001 asegura que no ha tenido relaciones con hombres. Tampoco con mujeres. “Me ha faltado decisión, pero no rechazo a las mujeres”. En este centro hay hombres que se dicen rehabilitados, pero sin pareja.

En Huaquillas (El Oro) funciona el “internado” Nueva Vida (Tiwintza y García Moreno), donde  homosexuales deben cumplir un encierro total por un año. “Ahorita tengo a dos jóvenes, uno de 15 años y otro de 21.

Tienen su  pabellón separado de los drogadictos”, admite Timoteo Zárate, quien se presenta como un “pastor” que pudo superar la homosexualidad.
