OH EXCITEMENT! I have a new top ten women ever its much like a train that terminates here... all change people all change... ok bad joke but still here are my beautiful new ladies...

10. Maria Bello - A new entry, well newish. This lady has been in and out of my top 10 more times then I have had hot dinners, or she has hot dinners for that matter. But at 40 something she is still gorgeous and is amazingly talented.

9. Eliza Duskhu - Slipping to 9th after my re-watch of Buffy season 3 (black lipstick is asking for trouble) is the bad slayer turned good slayer turned cheerleader. "Which outfit did you prefer?" I hear you ask... answers on a postcard...

8. Pink - After recently splitting from her hubbie I have developed a new found interest in the "only popstar to recieve stuffed animals and thongs".

7. Jemima Rooper - Another slider, watching her get kiss happy with Darcy in Lost in Austen was too much for me. Bring back Thelma! Bring back Hex! Make another show where she sleeps with women! Any of those three will do...

6. Alyssa Milano - Used to sit at number 2 under Angelina (Alyssa under Angelina..... and I'm back) now not even gracing the top 5, Alyssa needs to make more films that make it to UK release!

5. Joss Stone - Also previously taking the top spot, Joss has fallen out of my affections. Not too far though and hopefully with a new album rumoured to be out soon she can claw it back! Failing the album is any good she can still claw it back... gently.

4. Angelina Jolie - Once the golden girl in my eyes, she then gave birth and then again to twins (can anyone say BUCKET), team that with some really crap movies and vowing to not go naked any more Angelina has broken my heart!

3. Summer Glau - What can I say - gorgeous, sweet, a terminator, nuff said.

2. Gabrielle Christian - With the return of South of Nowhere very soon I'm remembering how much I love the girl next door that is Spencer. She would be a very cute girlfriend and not being famous over here I think she could avoid the press... I have thought way too much about this.

1. Lena Headey - Not a suprise here, but Lena has played gay and I loved it and she is now playing Sarah Connor (THE MOTHER OF ALL DESTINY) and lets face it... MILF! Her acting is amazing, I was very confused as to whether she was american or english (see IMaY and TSCC) and she has some sexy tattoos! Whats not to like!?!

There we have it... 10 gorgeous women on one list, as Keeley Hazell would say, "use you free hand to go browse these ladies pictures...".

If you are any kind of good geek you already know all about Joss Whedon's new series, Dollhouse. The show is scheduled to air on Fox as part of their midseason lineup in January 2009. It stars Whedonverse veteran Eliza Dushku as an agent in a secret black ops organization. The agents are called "Dolls", after they do their missions they get their minds wiped and get a whole new identity implanted. Dushku's character, Echo, starts to retain her memories. Tah-Da!

Wicked stoked about this. I actually kind of forgot about it, and then found the official website. Which means Fox hasn't axed it yet! Yay!

It is never too soon to start a campaign to keep this show alive though.

After the cut watch the clip of Eliza from the Jimmy Kimmel show that got PETA super pissed off.

I’m seriously more excited about the mid-season of this television year then I was about the f

I'm seriously more excited about the mid-season of this television year then I was about the fall premieres...Dollhouse being the big draw, but also coming up? Castle with Nathan Fillion. There is finally a trailer/preview out making the rounds...and I saw it moments ago. If you haven't yet had a gander, here it is:

Initial impressions

- A little on the cheeseball side BUT it reminds me a bit of those early 80's shows I loved so much (Remington Steele, etc.) and I think Nathan could be gangbusters in a serious/cheesy role like Rick Castle. BUT if that's the vein the show is in, I need to see more of the female lead to see if she can hold her own or if she'll just be kind of boring
- Like the interplay with the daughter...less cliche and stronger scene-vibes over all then some of the cop parts
- Had several very funny moments which bodes well (love the lines about "this is better then shark week" and Nathan's "that was so cool!")
- Since all the scenes are more then likely from the pilot, which isn't always the best anyway, I have hope that it has enough potential to get even better

Also on the mid-season list of things to look forward to...Dollhouse, the latest creation from the genius mind of Joss Whedon. Now you may have heard that production got shut down briefly so Whedon could re-group and re-write...which got a lot of people worried. I am not one of those people. The man knows what he's doing and if he's not happy with something, odds are he's right to re-do it...nothing is half-assed with this guy and speaking as a fan of everything else he's done, I think we'll love it even more if he gets a chance to put his best foot forward with this new world he's creating. If you haven't seen the preview for the show, check it out:

Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school's social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he's worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of There's Something About Mary) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ's dad, and a fresh cast that almost makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

OK…locked the cut of FWB. Sent it off to Sundance. Fingers crossed. Still need to work more on the score, need to do the sound mix, tweak the color…(it never ends…making a film is like having a child)

Speaking of children…there’s been a producer trying to turn my last book UNWOUND into a feature for some time now. And it looked like it was finally going to happen. A lot of Canadian tax credit funding crap…and with a decent leading lady on board. The only hitch: the leading man. Now I know how difficult it is to make a featyre, especially on a limited budget, so I try to remain open to casting possibilities. When the list of potential leading men was presented to me, I approved all but one, Billy Zane.

Why? Well, I directed Zane in my film THE KISS. Every day (EVERY FUCKING DAY) he’d show up on set with his scenes completely rewritten. I’m not talking about a few line changes here and there. I’m saying nothing remained of the old scene, not even its intent. Instead there were pages of mind-numbingly dumb dialog which had nothing to do with the story we were trying to tell. When I would explain to Zane that I appreciated his effort, but we were shooting the scene as written, and that he had over a month to address any potential problems he might have had with the script, he’d sulk, he’d moan, and our spineless producer would give in.

When I’d try to explain to Zane that the caps and hats he insisted on wearing in EVERY FUCKING SCENE looked silly at best, and gay at worst (not that there’s anything wrong with that, except that the character he was playing was not gay), he’d throw another mini-tantrum and refuse to take it off.

Twice on set I had to be restrained from lunging at him. Not that to beat the living crap out of him would have done anything other than get me fired. Instead I stood back and allowed him and the producer to destroy my film.

So when the producer of UNWOUND finally admitted that Zane would be the one she could get and that her backers would approve, I said NO. The check wasn’t worth it. I wasn’t going back in time. I had made YOU ARE ALONE and now FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS) to take the vile taste of THE KISS out of my mouth. (When I signed on for THE KISS I thought I was making a cool romantic drama with Eliza Dushku and Terence Stamp. I didn’t realize that the producer was just in fact making a $3 million demo reel for his wife…but that’s another rant.)

Life is too short to deal with assholes. A good rule to live by.

And I never wanted to have real kids.

With all the Dollhouse news that I will eventually be writing about...I present a preview of the series, which starts in January!

Created by: Joss Whedon

Starring: Eliza Dushku, Amy Acker, and some other peeps.

Cast Photo:

Wikipedia description:

In Dollhouse, Dushku plays a young woman named Echo, a member of a group of people known as "Actives" or "Dolls." The Dolls have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas, including memory, muscle memory, skills, and language, for different assignments. They're then hired out for particular jobs, crimes, fantasies, and occasional good deeds. On missions, Actives are monitored internally (and remotely) by Handlers. In between tasks, they are mind-wiped into a child-like state and live in a futuristic dormitory/laboratory, a hidden facility nicknamed "The Dollhouse". The story follows Echo, who begins, in her mind-wiped state, to become self-aware.

Beyond Dushku's character, the show will also revolve around the people who run the mysterious "Dollhouse" and two other "Dolls", Victor and Sierra, who are friendly with Echo. Although the Actives are ostensibly volunteers, the operation is highly illegal and under constant threat from Paul Smith, a determined federal agent who has heard a rumor about the dolls on one end and an insane rogue Active on the other.

TLW commentary:

It's a shame the show has been put off to January, but I'll wait forever for a Whedon show. With Dushku's "Tru Calling" and Whedon's "Firefly" both cancelled by Fox, it worries me to see Dollhouse played out on the same treachurous network. My fingers will be crossed that they (Fox) don't fuck this up again.

Sounds cool, right? TLW will keep you updated on any and all Dollhouse news stuffs.

Our wine metaphor-free critique. Really, not even one!

Bottle Shock is loosely based on a charming true story and features a handsome ensemble cast and enough honey sunlight-soaked cinematography to fill three coffee table books. A film for the after-dinner crowd and anyone who can't get enough 1970s nostalgia, it's a light diversion that wants to make you smile, if not think, more than it aims to make you laugh out loud. Except for several times when the film becomes so lightweight it almost floats away, that's not a problem. But the cast and the "so inspiring it could only happen in real life" true story just manage to keep it grounded on a rambling path.

That the story's timing couldn't be better is the stuff of cinema and, to a lesser degree, legend. In 1976, as America celebrated its bicentennial, two California-produced wines outscored their French counterparts in a blind taste test in Paris. The all-French judges were shocked, and rightly so: the event crashed the gate of French wine supremacy, opening the world wine market to vintages from America and later the world.

The film's freewheeling structure is part of its charm but doesn't help to tell a cohesive story. Stephen Spurrier (Alan Rickman), a British wine merchant and head of the not-especially-prestigious Academy of Wine in Paris, gathered several wines from California's Napa Valley wineries. Included in the American expeditionary force was a chardonnay produced by the struggling Chateau Montelena, run by the father and son team of Jim (Bill Pullman) and Bo (Chris Pine) Barrett. Jim is a perfectionist on the edge of financial ruin; Bo is a stoned surfer ambivalent about his life's direction, in stereotypically stoned-surfer fashion. The two are so shut off from one another they argue by boxing. As Spurrier tours the Valley in a rented Gremlin and rumpled British dignity (is any other kind tolerable?), the Barretts work at keeping the Chateau afloat with help from sexy, superfluous, fictitious intern Sam (Rachael Taylor) and Mexican-American wine expert Gustavo (Freddy Rodriguez), who's secretly making his own vintage.

That's a lot going on for an hour and forty minute runtime. Several of the episodes have a dragged out feel, while others, particularly those built around Pine, often stall out. The first third of the film plays especially formless, with scenes jumping back and forth between Napa and Paris. The Paris episodes are actually more entertaining, as Spurrier and his American friend Maurice (Dennis Farina, wearing suits seemingly inspired from every unfortunate wallpaper pattern of the era) run around trying to put the blind testing together. Meanwhile, Bo, Sam, and Gustavo have fun in the sun while filling out the sides of a romantic triangle that never fills out in depth.

The story of American underdogs triumphing is a perennial film subject, usually involving some kind of sport or intellectual event. Audiences not already vested in the brotherhood of the grape can be forgiven for not understanding the stakes of the Parisian wine tasting or why for the American wine makers economic ruin was always just a few bad barrels away. The film explains, if not actually shows, why the testing results were so momentous to both France and America. Director Randall Miller seems at a loss how to juggle everything, but often has the good sense to get out of the camera's way and just film the gorgeous Napa scenery. Miller was certainly paying attention when he watched Days of Heaven, though the effect is no less pleasing to the eye for being derivative.

The performances are worth savoring. Rickman is a joy to watch, all embarassed poise and squinty panic. Pullman, older and paunchier now than during his 90s just-this-close-to-major-stardom prime, gives a perfectly tuned, multi-dimensional performance that deserves award recognition. Pine, not entirely as engaging as he thinks he is behind a Dude Lebowski mop of hair and runaway grin, grows into his part as the film progresses. Taylor and Rodriguez, while cramped for screen time, make their impressions well enough. Farina is Farina: you either get his smartass energy by now, or you don't.

Comparisons to Sideways seem inevitable. That film understood wine as a metaphor for aging gracefully and held grape farming as symbolic of life's nothing-is-guaranteed struggle. Bottle Shock would rather move all over the place to tell a story, or better yet a collage of stories, for the sake of entertainment. If nothing else, its depiction of the idyllic rustic splendor of Carter-era Napa Valley makes a good bookend to Sideway's teeth-grinding display of modern weekend getaway motels and cheesy souvenir shop oenophilia. As a result, how you feel about Bottle Shock may reflect your own standards in wine and winemaking. See it in the theatres after a good meal, or wait for the DVD and open a bottle of whatever good stuff you keep for yourself.

While working on my post for the Fall Season TV shows, I did some surface research on Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon show airing on Fox beginning in January. I decided to do a little more research and see if I could come up with more info to give you a better picture of what this show will be about. What I found was even more exciting than I had anticipated.

From what I can tell, the Dollhouse is an organization that houses and controls “Actives”. Actives are people, humans, who can be hired to perform any task. You provide the task and the Dollhouse provides the Active with the necessary programming (Matrix style training) to perform the task.

Topher: “Hello Echo.”

Echo: “Did I fall asleep?”

Topher: “For a little while.”

From being a deadly assassin to the ultimate call-girl who has been programmed to truly be deeply “in-love” with you. After each job, the Active has their memory wiped and their personality completely erased, essentially cleaning the slate from the previous job. Not only do the Actives no longer know anything about themselves or their past jobs, they have no memory of the other Actives, or do they?

I did find an un-official site, which after a little digging, also had a trailer. The trailer is must see, not very spoilerific, just gives you a little taste of the pace of the show. Joss Whedon has a tendency to be pretty upfront with trailers and promos, I venture to say that what you see in this trailer is a pretty good portrayal of the show’s concept.

Side note: I had audio issues when trying to view the trailer in a Firefox browser, but IE worked just fine.

The trailer is narrated for the most part by Adelle DeWitt, played by Olivia Williams. She appears to be the head honcho of some sort, whether that makes her a Dr. or scientist, I am not sure. It is her opinion that because of the nature of the Active’s job, they are “the truest soul among us” I am assuming because they have no corruption of experience, influence or motive, they simply are who they are at their core.

There are 3 Actives featured in the trailer:

Echo – Eliza Dushku

Sierra – Dichen Lachman

Victor – Enver Gjokaj

My dad was a HAM radio operator so I instantly recognized that these names are the references to letters of the alphabet. When communicating over a radio, sometimes it is difficult to enunciate letters clearly enough for people to clearly understand what you are saying. They use these references to avoid mix-ups… E-Echo, S-Sierra, V-Victor. I wonder if that means that there are 26 Actives total? Perhaps different episodes will feature interactions with some of the other Actives.

We also see in the trailer that there is an FBI agent investigating the existence of the Dollhouse and its Actives. The Dollhouse to this point is just an urban myth, secret society type of organization. This FBI agent is looking to expose them, probably because he has strong issues of morality with what the organization is doing.

All in all, the show looks extremely promising, as I come across more information I will post it here, in the meantime we may just have to wait until January. If you have any news or information about the show, please drop me a line at InnerGeekdomMail@gmail.com.

Here it is, the start of the top ten. A quick note to be made here is that I didn't miss number 8. Number 7, "Graduation Day" is a two-part episode, and thus is a tie. It is both number 7 and 8 on the list, or, 7a and b. If I were only doing a Top Ten, then I'd probably just rank it as one episode, but since this is a Top 25, I figured that they should take their own spots on the list as a tie. To see what ranked 15-11, click HERE.

#10 “Conversations with Dead People”
Episode 129 – Season 7
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Adam Busch as Warren Meers/The First, Azura Skye as Cassie Newton/The First, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers/The First
Guest Star(s): Jonathan M. Woodward as Holden “Webs” Webster, Stacey Scowley as Young Woman, Angie Hart as Singer
Writer(s): Jane Espenson, Drew Goddard, Marti Noxon and Joss Whedon
Director: Nick Marck
Synopsis in 50 words or less: Buffy fights a former classmate-turned-psych-major-turned-vampire who psycho-analyses her insecurities while they battle; Willow is confronted by the apparent ghost of Cassie, claiming to speak for Tara; Dawn battles a poltergeist at home; Andrew and Jonathan return from Mexico to find trouble at Sunnydale High.
Why it’s on the list: An astounding episode that features 4.5 separate stories that (save for an unanswered phone call) don’t intersect, yet all build to a climax with the same intensity and dread. By the end of this episode, the evil that had been bubbling through the first six episodes of the season had announced its presence, but left behind even more questions than it had before. The episode had a different tone and feel than every other episode in the series, starting with the opening sequence featuring the title, date and time and a song (written by Joss Whedon) that began and ended the episode. In between, it gives a bit of everything, from Buffy’s cute discussion with vampire “Webs” (played by Jonathan M. Woodward, who will show up in Angel as Knox), the geeky-hilariousness of Andrew and Jonathan, the sadness of Willow and Cassie, Dawn’s terrifying night alone, and the shocking conclusion of Spike feeding on the young woman at the end. As an added bonus, the dialogue in the episode is chock-full of references to past episodes. Sadly, this is the only episode in the series history in which Xander does not appear. Also, Willow’s scene would have been better had they been able to get Amber Benson back to play Tara, instead of having “Cassie” speak for her.
Snappy quote:
Holden: Oh, my God!
Buffy: Oh, your God what?
Holden: Oh, well, you know, not my God, because I defy him and all of his works, but...Does he exist? Is there word on that, by the way?
Buffy: Nothing solid.

#9 “The Wish”
Episode 43 – Season 3
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, David Boreanz as Angel, Seth Green as Oz, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Mark Metcalf as The Master, Emma Caulfield as Anyanka, Larry Bagby III as Larry Blaisdell, Mercedes McNab as Harmony Kendall, Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson
Guest Star(s): Nathan Anderson as John Lee, Nicole Bilderback as Cordette #1, Mariah O’Brien as Nancy, Gary Imhoff as Teacher, Robert Covarrubias as Janitor
Writer(s): Marti Noxon
Director: David Greenwalt
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After catching Xander and Willow kissing, Cordelia is left heartbroken and ostracised. While bonding with a new girl, Anya, she wishes that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale. Anyaka the demon grants the wish, creating a Sunnydale much worse than the one we know.
Why it’s on the list: It’s both a fun and a dark episode. It’s fun because the alternate universe allows us to see different versions of the characters we love, allowing the actors to have some fun. Xander and Willow were vampires, Giles, Oz and Larry were vampire fighters, Angel was The Master’s prisoner (The Master rose in Buffy’s absence), and Buffy is a joyless Slayer based out of Cleveland. Sunnydale had been overrun with vampires and The Master had a plan to revolutionise the way vampires fed on humans. By the end of the episode, before Giles was able to reverse the spell, Xander and Willow kill Cordelia, Xander kills Angel, Buffy kills Xander, Oz kills Willow, and The Master kills Buffy.
Snappy quote:
Buffy: You take an awful lot on faith here, Jeeves.

#7 “Graduation Day” parts 1 & 2
Episodes 55/56 – Season 3
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, David Boreanz as Angel, Seth Green as Oz, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Harry Groener as Mayor Richard Wilkens III, Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Larry Bagby III as Larry Blaisdell, Mercedes McNab as Harmony Kendall, Ethan Erickson as Percy West, Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, James Lurie as Mr. Miller, Eliza Dushku as Faith, Armin Shimerman as Principal Snyder
Guest Star(s): Hal Robinson as Dr. Hal Robinson, Tom Bellin as Dr. Gold
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 100 words or less: As the gang desperately attempt to find a way to defeat the Mayor, Faith shoots Angel with a poisoned arrow. The only cure for the poison is to drain the blood of a Slayer, leading to a fight to the death between Buffy and Faith. Failing to capture the defeated Faith, Buffy instead had Angel drink from her. After recovering with a blood transfusion, Buffy and company enlist the entire senior class to defeat the Mayor at graduation.
Why it’s on the list: The one-on-one battle between Buffy and Faith would have qualified this for the list on its own, but other than that, this season ending two-parter was chock full of memorable scenes. Here’s a few: Giles stabs the Mayor with a fencing foil, Willow and Oz sleep together, Buffy quits the Watcher’s Council, Angel feeds on Buffy, Cordelia and Wesley share possibly the worst kiss in television history—ending their flirtation, Angel leaves the show, Harmony is turned into a vampire, Larry dies, Principal Snyder is eaten by The Mayor, and the gang blow up Sunnydale High. School’s out forever.
Snappy quote:
Oz: Guys, take a moment to deal with this. We survived.
Buffy: It was a hell of a battle.
Oz: Not the battle. High school.

#6 “Restless”
Episode 78 – Season 4
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Marc Blucas as Riley Finn, James Marsters as Spike, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay, Mercedes McNab as Harmony, Phina Oruche as Olivia, George Hertzberg as Adam, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Seth Green as Oz, Armin Shimerman as Principal Snyder
Guest Star(s): David Wells as The Cheese Man, Michael Harney as Xander’s father, Sarah Ferguson as The First Slayer
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After combining their essences with the Slayer to defeat Adam, the gang (Giles, Xander, Willow, and Buffy) relax at Buffy’s house to watch videos. They quickly fall asleep, and are attacked in their dreams by the spirit of the First Slayer.
Why it’s on the list: Possibly the most brilliant and original piece of gobbledygook the show has ever produced. Each of the dream sequences, from Willow and the school play, to Xander’s Apocalypse Nowish reunion with Principal Snyder, to Giles’ exposition song, work on so many levels. As funny as they are creepy, along with a lot of foreshadowing that one can only appreciate after watching the whole series then coming back. Here’s a few: the black satchel Buffy finds in The Initiative (the one with the grey mud in it) is the same black satchel Principal Wood will give her in season seven (it was his mother’s). At the beginning of Buffy’s dream, the clock reads 7:30, a reference to the dream Buffy had in “Graduation Day” part two, when Faith mentions “counting down from seven-three-oh”, which itself was the number of days until Buffy would die at the end of season five. And, of course, Tara’s quote: “be back before Dawn”, an obvious reference to the next season. When it first aired, this episode just seemed like brilliant nonsense. Now, we know better.
Snappy quote:
Xander: Sometimes I think about two women doing a spell... and then I do a spell by myself.

#15 “Normal Again”
Episode 117 – Season 6
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, Adam Busch as Warren Meers, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Dean Butler as Hank Summers, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers
Guest Star(s): Michael Warren as Doctor, Kirsten Nelson as Lorraine Ross, Sarah Scivier as Nurse, Rodney Charles as Orderly, April Dion as Kissing Girl
Writer(s): Diego Gutierrez
Director: Rick Rosenthal
Synopsis in 50 words or less: When Buffy is stabbed by a demon, she begins to hallucinate that she is in a mental institution, learning that the adventures of the past six years in Sunnydale are all a part of her intricate schizophrenia.
Why it’s on the list: One of the more interesting concepts put forth by any episode in the whole series, this episode quite convincing posits the idea that everything we’ve seen as an audience was merely a figment of Buffy’s imagination. The episode ends rather ambiguously, letting the question hang, never fully resolved in the rest of the show’s run. I personally believe that the institution world was hallucinatory, because the series (and even this episode) has had many scenes that do not involve Buffy, scenes she is not aware of. But still, the episode does a good job in instilling doubt. What makes the episode even more impressive is that it is the first effort of the series by both the writer Gutierrez and director Rosenthal. Top 25 on your first shot, good job guys!
Snappy quote:
Buffy: Cause what's more real? A sick girl in an institution, or some kind of supergirl, chosen to fight demons and save the world? That's ridiculous.

#14 “Earshot”
Episode 52 – Season 3
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, David Boreanz as Angel, Seth Green as Oz, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, Ethan Erickson as Percy West, Larry Bagby III as Larry Blaisdell, Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson
Guest Star(s): Keram Malicki-Sánchez as Freddy Iverson, Wendy Worthington as The Lunch Lady, Lauren E. Roman as Nancy Doyle, Justin Doran as Hogan Martin, Molly Bryant as Ms. Murray
Writer(s): Jane Espenson
Director: Regis Kimble
Synopsis in 50 words or less: Buffy gains the ability to read minds after slaying a demon with that power. Before driving her crazy, it leads to Buffy to learn of a plot to kill the student body.
Why it’s on the list: A perfect blend of comedy and drama. When Buffy first learns that she’ll gain an aspect of a demon, her reaction is funny (worrying about horns and tails). Then, when she learns that she can read minds, it gets even funnier (Xander can’t stop thinking about sex, Wesley thinks of Cordelia, Oz breaks down Descartian logic, Buffy learns of her mother and Giles’ illicit affair in “Band Candy”, Buffy is unable to read Angel’s thoughts). Then, her newfound telepathy threatens to drive Buffy crazy, which brings danger into the episode, as does the revelation that someone will kill everyone in the school (which led to the postponement of the episode when it was set to air a week after Columbine). Then, the Scoobies interrogate potential suspects, which is hilarious. Then, Buffy stops Jonathan from committing suicide, which is touching. Then, Xander saves the day, which is funny.
Snappy quote:
Xander (to Oz, regarding the intensity of the basketball game): Yeah, for a minute there, I thought you were gonna make an expression.
Oz: Well, I felt one coming on, I won't lie.

#13 “Chosen”
Episode 144 – Season 7
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers/The First, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles, Eliza Dushku as Faith, Nathan Fillion as Caleb, David Boreanaz as Angel, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Iyari Limon as Kennedy, Sarah Hagan as Amanda, Indigo as Rona, Kristy Wu as Chao-Ahn, Felicia Day as Vi, Mary Wilcher as Shannon, D.B. Woodside as Principal Robin Wood
Guest Star(s): Lisa Ann Cabasa as Injured Girl, Demetra Raven as Girl At Bat, Katie Gray as Indian Girl, Ally Matsumura as Japanese Girl, Kelli Wheeler as School Girl, Jenna Edwards as Trailer Girl, Julia Ling as Potential with Power #2,
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After defeating Caleb, Buffy decides to take the fight to The First by going into the Hellmouth with the potential Slayers to defeat his army before they rise. To do so, Willow casts a spell which shares Buffy’s power with all potential Slayers.
Why it’s on the list: The series finale, “Chosen” finishes what was a season-long effort to wrap up all the loose ends of the series. The episode features a nice, albeit stilted, final appearance from Angel and ends with the most epic battle in the series history. The episode starts of a little slow (after finishing the battle with Caleb continued from the previous episode), which would be detriment to another episode, but in this episode it gives the audience one last chance to say goodbye to the characters in quiet moments. Then, when the episode reaches the halfway mark, a glorious, Lord of the Rings-style battle kicks off, which is as visually stunning as anything the series had ever accomplished. When the smoke cleared, The First evil was defeated, the Hellmouth destroyed, Anya and Spike were dead, and Sunnydale imploded into the ground. That, my friends, is how you end a series.
Snappy quote:
Buffy (to Angel): Are you gonna come by and get all Dawson on me every time I have a boyfriend?

#12 “Innocence”
Episode 26 – Season Two
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, David Boreanz as Angel, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Seth Green as Oz, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Robia LaMorte as Jenny Calendar/Janna Kalderash, James Marsters as Spike, Juliet Landau as Drusilla, James Lurie as Mr. Miller
Guest Star(s): Vincent Schiavelli as Uncle Enyos, Brian Thompson as The Judge, Eric Saiet as Dalton, Ryan Francis as Soldier
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After sleeping with Buffy, the curse that restored Angel’s soul was lifted. Now Buffy and company have to face not only Spike, Dru, and The Judge, but also an evil Angel as well.
Why it’s on the list: “Innocence” was the second half of a two-parter, begun with “Surprise”, marking the series' move from Monday to Tuesday night. It began with Angel tortured in the street after sleeping with Buffy. He recovers, and then kills a woman who happened upon him in one of the more shocking sequences in the early BTVS episodes. This episode set up Angel as the big bad for the second half of season two, making him quite possibly the best villain the series has ever had. He starts the evil off with a bang in this episode, going back to Buffy after they had sex and telling her that she handled it like “a real pro”, but that it was no big deal, crushing the seventeen-year-old Buffy who had no idea that her boyfriend had just lost his soul. He then sets out to kill her friends (Buffy stops him just in time) and bring The Judge to the Sunnydale Mall to kill all its residents. The scene at the end when Giles tells Buffy that he is not disappointed in her, when she was sure he would be, is one of the most touching moments of the series.
Snappy quote:
Spike: I know you haven't been in the game for a while, mate, but we do still kill people. It's sort of our raison d'être, you know.

#11 “Once More, With Feeling”
Episode 107 – Season 6
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay
Guest Star(s): Hinton Battle as Sweet, Hunter Cochrane as College Guy #2, Daniel Weaver as Handsome Young Man, Marti Noxon as Parking Ticket Woman, David Fury as Mustard Man
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: Sunnydale falls under a mysterious spell which causes all its residents to reveal their innermost thoughts through elaborate song and dance numbers. When they’ve revealed all, they spontaneously combust.
Why it’s on the list: An action-adventure show decides to put on a musical. And it works. This episode shows why the series was one of television’s best, because it was unafraid to take chances, and in doing so, was able to create unique and memorable stories. What’s great is that even though the show went outside the box by doing a musical episode, it didn’t go out of continuity to do so. Instead, it used the spell that turned Sunnydale into a musical to advance the character elements of Xander and Anya’s reluctance, Spike’s love for Buffy, and Buffy’s resentment toward her friends for bringing her back from the dead, and, in doing so, ripping her from Heaven.
Snappy quote:

Time to continue with the Big List. The reason why I'm breaking it down into 5 groups of 5 is that I worry that no one would read the whole thing if I posted it at once. Most would start off reading it, then they'd scroll down, maybe read an episode they love, then scroll some more. Of course, that could still be happening, but breaking it up increases the possibility that some people might read the whole deal. To read what ranked 25 through 21, click HERE.

#20 “Prophecy Girl”
Episode 12 – Season One
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Mark Metcalf as The Master, David Boreanz as Angel, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Andrew J. Ferchland as Colin/The Anointed One, Robia LaMorte as Jenny Calendar
Guest Star(s): Scott Gurney as Kevin
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: The signs all point to the Master’s ascension in time for the Spring Fling when Giles learns of the disturbing prophecy that Buffy will die at his hands. After some soul searching, Buffy heads to his lair to face her fate and prevent the apocalypse.
Why it’s on the list: The first truly great episode in the series, the first season finale set the standard for season finales to come. The best part in the episode (and the season as a whole) is the vulnerability the sixteen-year-old Buffy shows upon learning of her prophesised death. Instead of shrugging it off and facing it head on, she quits and tries to get her mom to take her away, before heroically rising to the challenge. Other highlights include Xander’s heartbreak over Buffy rejecting his invitation to the Spring Fling, Willow’s reaction to finding corpses in the school’s AV room, and Xander bringing Buffy back to life (for the first time).
Snappy quote:
Buffy: When he wakes up, tell him...I don't know. Think of something cool; tell him I said it.

#19 “Who Are You?”
Episode 72 – Season 4
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Faith/Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Marc Blucas as Riley Finn, James Marsters as Spike, and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles.
Recurring Performer(s): Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay, Leonard Roberts as Forrest Gates, George Hertzberg as Adam, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Eliza Dushku as Buffy Summers/Faith
Guest Star(s): Chet Grissom as Detective, Alastair Duncan as Collins, Kevin Owers as Smith, Jeff Ricketts as Weatherby
Writer(s): Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After Faith uses The Mayor’s device to switch bodies with Buffy, Faith tries to slip into Buffy’s life. Meanwhile, a special branch of the Watcher’s Council attempts to take Buffy (as Faith) away to England.
Why it’s on the list: The mind switch between Buffy and Faith was well done, as each actress was convincing playing the other’s part. Sarah Michelle Gellar was a particular standout as Faith, and Faith trying to be Buffy, giving one of her best performances ever on the show. The best was when she seduced Spike at the Bronze. It makes me blush.
Snappy quote:
Buffy-in-Faith: Oh, when I had psychic power I heard my mother think that you were like a stevedore during sex. Do you want me to continue?
Giles: Actually I beg you to stop.
Buffy-in-Faith: What's a stevedore?

#18 “Villains”
Episode 120 – Season 6
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Amelinda Embry as Katrina Silber, Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, Adam Busch as Warren Meers, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Jeff Kober as Rack, James C. Leary as Clem, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay
Guest Star(s): Steven W. Bailey as Cave Demon, David Adefeso as Paramedic #2, Jeffrey Nicholas Brown as Hero Vampire, Tim Hodgin as Coroner, Michael Matthys as Paramedic #1, Mueen J. Ahmad as Doctor, Jane Cho as Nurse #1, Meredith Cross as Nurse #2
Writer(s): Marti Noxon
Director: David Solomon
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After Warren’s backyard shooting leaves Buffy wounded and Tara dead, Willow attempts to resurrect Tara. When that fails, she is corrupted by dark magics in order to exact her revenge.
Why it’s on the list: Even if your opinion of season six isn't that high, you have to admit that it finished strong. Following the defeat of the trio and Warren’s inadvertent (and surprising) slaying of Tara, came this episode where Willow turns to the dark side to avenge Tara. This episode, with Willow’s final line of “one down…” spills right into the next episode, “Two to Go”, and finishes with the season finale. Willow’s killing of Warren was one of the most brutal things the show has ever done.
Snappy quote:
Andrew: I miss Ferris Matthew. Broadway Matthew... I find him cold.

#17 “Two to Go”
Episode 121 – Season 6
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, Adam Busch as Warren Meers, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Jeff Kober as Rack, James C. Leary as Clem, Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles
Guest Star(s): Steven W. Bailey as Cave Demon, Tanoi Reed as Fire Demon, Jeff McCredie as Officer, Damien Mooney as Patrol Cop, Michael Younger as Truck Driver
Writer(s): Douglas Petrie
Director: Bill L. Norton
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After killing Warren, Willow sets her sights on his former-accomplices Andrew and Jonathan. Determined to stop her before she completely succumbs to the darkness, Buffy and Willow square off. After Buffy is defeated, there is only one person left to get in Willow’s way.
Why it’s on the list: The middle part of three-episode finale follows the cliffhanger of Willow’s slaughter of Warren (which followed the cliffhanger of Warren killing Tara), and ends with an even better cliffhanger of Giles returning to battle Willow. I’m a big fan of this arc, which is unsurprising since it apes my all-time favourite comic book story (which the show itself recognizes, when Andrew says: “She's like Dark Phoenix up there”). The fight between Buffy and Willow at the Magic Box is one of the series best (although not quite up there with Buffy v. Faith). This episode also does a really good job setting up Xander’s involvement in the next episode, as he ineffectually looks on as his best friends the Slayer and the super powered witch square off, while his ex-fiancée-turned-vengeance-demon tries to help. Xander recognizes his lack of power in his soliloquy to Anya,
"You think I'm the hero of this piece? I saw the gun. Before Warren even raised it, I saw it, and... I couldn't move. He shot two of my friends before I could even... You want me to know how useless I am? That it's my fault? Thanks. Already got the memo".
All of which sets the stage for his eventual heroism in “Grave”.
Snappy quote:
Willow: Come on, this is a huge deal for me! Six years as a side man, and now I get to be the Slayer.
Buffy: A killer isn't a Slayer. Being a Slayer means something you can't conceive of.
Willow: Oh, Buffy. You really need to have every square inch of your ass kicked.

#16 “Grave”
Episode 122 – Season 6
Featured Performers: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendan as Xander Harris, Emma Caulfied as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers, James Marsters as Spike, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.
Recurring Performer(s): Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson, Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells, Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles
Guest Star(s): Steven W. Bailey as Cave Demon, Tanoi Reed as Fire Demon, Brett Wagner as Trucker
Writer(s): David Fury
Director: James A. Contner
Synopsis in 50 words or less: After stealing Giles’ borrowed magic, Willow finds herself connected to all life on the planet, and is tortured by their pain. This leads her to set out to destroy the world to end its pain. When no mystical force can stop her, it’s up to Xander to save the world.
Why it’s on the list: The final chapter of the Dark Willow Saga brought one of my favourite moments of the series, as Xander, plain, ordinary, powerless Xander, the comic-relief sidekick, the guy I most easily identified with on the show, saved the world. He stopped Willow when Buffy, Giles, and Anya’s powers couldn’t, by tapping into the last vestiges of her humanity. With nothing more to offer than an “I love you”, he bravely confronted Willow, revealing himself to truly be “the hero of this piece”. Then, the show sent viewers into the break before season seven by giving Spike a soul.
Snappy quote:
Xander: You've been my best friend my whole life. World gonna end... where else would I want to be?
Willow: Is this the master plan? You're gonna stop me by telling me you love me?
Xander: Well, I was gonna walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil, but it seemed kind of cartoony.
