If there's one thing I know, it's that ants are always hungry.  I had five nice tins of yummy poisoned ant food all ready for these guests.  It took only a few minutes to pry open the access doors on the metal ant traps with a screwdriver and set them out on the basement floor.  Well, now the invaders had a nice snack that would eventually kill them all, including their annoying queen.

Now the problem was that there were just too many of these little black scavengers scooting across the floor.  It was time for some good old fashioned American cartoon violence.  I started looking around for a hammer.  I found a nice big rubber mallet that would not ding the concrete floor.  Then it was just a matter of walking back and forth across the floor swinging the mallet and bonking the little bastards into a pulp.  There must have been a couple hundred ants running for their lives.  I got every one that was under the stairs, crawling out from the freezers, creeping in the laundry, every one I could see.

It was late, so I went to sleep.  I had a vision of a basement swarming with thousands of ants as I lay in bed trying to get to sleep.  I turned on the lights and went back downstairs.  With the mallet I got six more of the little invaders.  I left the ant traps to take care of any scouts and finally went to sleep.  Today there are still a few of the little critters creeping around, but their numbers have been cut down seriously.  It will only be a matter of time before the poison kills off any that I miss with the cartoon hammer.  Ants are everywhere, but when they get in the house, it is time for them to die.

Well in his effort to help us be earth friendly Jason remembered a tip her heard when we lived in Seattle. The trusty cockroach trap....So armed with a cup, stick and coffee grounds he has set his trap!

SURPRISE! It worked. He has cups full of cockroaches in the morning...Gross yes very! But, he takes them out to the desert and throws them back....It is humane and safe for the family. No chemicals and the cockroaches get to come back every night. What could be better.

If he had his way he would let them bake in the sun or cover them to suffocate. But, he loves his wife so we will do it this way at least for a onth or so and then no roaches for a few months--WIN WIN for everyone.

Still when I'm sat on a nice warm beach gazing at the sunset sipping a chilled glass of wine and turning my Mk VII quantum disruptors on the other holidaymakers and local life forms I'll be content...

"Do You Want to Know How I Got Rid of Them?"

At first, I tried chemicals. Raid was readily available at the corner convenience store, in several formulas aimed at various vermin. Cockroaches weren’t the only pests in the buildings. Other brands also competed at eye-level on the shelves. I realized the problem was widespread.

One morning I opened my kitchen cabinet and found a big cockroach sitting in the middle of my breakfast bowl, rotating its feelers, as if offering itself up in sacrifice for my breakfast. The Raid had worn off. I shrieked and dropped the bowl, giving the roach an escape route. 

I pulled everything from every cabinet in the kitchen, cleaned and wiped all the little spaces between boards and doors and wall.  On a whim, I picked up a roll of gray industrial tape that I'd left on the counter the day before.   I stuck lengths of tape over the openings in which I expected roaches might hide. For the next week I kept vigil over the cabinets, opening them several times a day just to surprise any cockroach that thought he had privacy in there. The surprise was on me, however, because I did not see a single roach anywhere!

I phoned Asma to tell her about my new approach.

At first, I taped only the insides of cabinets and closets. When I realized how efficient the method was--- far better than chemicals, which reek and then stop working--- I taped other areas of the apartment. Over time I perfected the technique, learning how to choose the narrowest width needed, and how to apply it straight, without wrinkles.  I sent my husband out for three more rolls of industrial strength silver tape.

Once that tape stuck, there was no ripping it off. Even a thumb-sized cockroach could not emerge from behind it. I taped door frames, baseboards, stoop, and window frames. I did a neat job so it wouldn’t look  industrial.  An imaginative person could have looked at the strips and thought  they were a decorative statement.

My most significant accomplishment was taping the bathroom. This technique evolved over several years of vacations, because while we were abroad, all cockroaches knew it, and gave themselves carte blanche to move in and set up housekeeping. They liked the bathroom best, even better than the kitchen.

I simply taped every crack and orifice I could find. Each year, the roaches would find new ones, and each year, I’d tape up the new ones. The bathroom actually became a room of visual delight, what with strips and squares of silver tape lining seams and covering holes. I should have photographed it. 

The day we’d leave for vacation, I’d save the bathroom taping for last. At the last minute, after the luggage had been taken out and the kids were whining, “Mom, come on,” I would tape the entire toilet lid and seat cover where they met the bowl.

When the entire bathroom looked ready to board the plane with us, we were ready to leave. Later, while listening to the drone of the jet engines, I would turn my attention to all the neat stories I’d tell the people back home.  I would stop worrying about cockroaches, secure in the hope that I'd foiled the yearly immigration. I wondered whether I'd be able to boast of my lovely taping to anyone in the States. No, probably not. I wondered if I might at least meet someone  with whom I could share my favorite movie, Joe’s Apartment.

I did! My mom loved it; we laughed like kids. My sister, however, didn't last beyond Joe's first infestation.

İlkay Eser Ardınç’ın köpeğini de aynen bunu yaptı. Saim’in komşusu olmak gibi bir talihsizlik başına gelmiş olan İlkay, sabah yürüyüşüne çıkmış olan köpeği geri dönmeyince merak ederek dışarıda köpeğini aramaya çıktı. Ve buldu: köpeği Saim’in bahçesinde can çekişiyordu....

This story will help you better understand how the Beykoz Municipality of Istanbul became a serial dog killer: thanks to its workforce. The Beykoz Municipality has a dedicated workforce who have not only made it their mission to kill as many dogs as possible in their municipal capacity, but enjoy doing so in their private lives as well.

Meet Beykoz Municipality employee Saim Karababa. He resides at Çayağzı Köyü Şehit Cemil Çakır Dilara Sokak No: 14 Riva, Beykoz. Obviously, dog killing during business hours does not satisfy Saim Karababa. Outside of business hours, he kills the dogs in his neighborhood.

This is precisely what he has done with Ilkay Eser Ardinc’s dog. Ilkay, who has the misfortune of being Saim’s neighbor, was worried when her dog did not return home after its morning walk and went out to look for it. And she found it: dying in Saim’s garden.

Being a professional dog killer, Saim knew all the tricks of how to murder a dog. Saim lured Ilkay’s poor dog with a piece of meat which he had laced with agricultural pesticides. Saim confessed to this to Ilkay’s vet who immediately came to the scene.

In fact, this is not Saim’s first incident of this sort. He has been regularly poisoning dogs in his neighborhood using similar tricks. Ilkay’s dog didn’t make it. It died in Saim’s garden.

Ilkay and her vet have started legal procedures against this man. Her vet is arranging for an autopsy, and Ilkay herself gave a statement to the jandarma (military police).

Since the murder, Saim has been trying to pervert the course of justice. He is harassing Ilkay with messages and trying to bribe her with offers of a “brand new dog” if she drops the case. This may sound like a joke to you, but Saim even presented himself at a hospital posing as if he were poisoned by agricultural pesticides himself!

No Saim, nobody is dropping the case even if you posed as Ilkay’s new dog. Today, we have helped Ilkay to complete court procedures against Saim, and we will show you pictures of the dog Saim killed.

In the meantime, you need to contact the Beykoz Municipality and tell them you know what their employee has been up to:

Although Mayor Muharrem Ergül pretends to authorities that any volunteer has Access to the shelter, the shelter's real volunteers Berrin Olcay and Yasemin Baban are still not being admitted !

Looking from outside, the shelter looks very quiet, the few dogs left do not even bark anymore.
One can feel the atmosphere of fear among the dogs. They are waiting to see who is going to be next?! ''Where are they taking the ones of us that they choose?''

The remaining ones are lying on the hot cement under the heat of the sun. ''Last year our volunteers had bought hundreds of meters of green shadow tents. Now they have abandoned us and these heartless people around will not put the tents, they dont even bother about us!! ''Water and disgusting old bread, that's all we get since more than two months.

No care, not even a look.''

Veterinarians can sit all day! No one to control! Who cares? The sicker the dogs are, the sooner the number will decrease, the less work to do! no neutering, very very few dogs are brought for neutering.

No visitors, no rehoming apart from the ones rehomed with the ongoing efforts of a few volunteers trying desperately to save from this hell as many dogs as possible.

Mayor Ergül is used to Court cases and has been already condemned in the past!! İhsan Sabir Öksüz’s father who was the head of Beykoz Government Hospital had been accused in newspapers for some time for managing an illegal hospital in Çekmeköy, İstanbul. Let's see what the son deserves?! It runs in their blood.

Volunteers have also been to Court to claim all their belongings illegally held at the shelter by the Municipality.

In short... the impass continues.. this is a battle of good against evil, of a small group of people led by truth and ideals against a group of individuals hiding behind a curtain of lies, hoping that the truth will go away.. but it won’t.

Muharrem Ergul and his gang of crooks made a big fundamental mistake.. they did not understand who they were up against.

Now Ergul has a big problem, a problem that will never go away and will set the course of his political carreer (if you can call THAT a career)... Muharrem Ergul has a cancer, us.. and that cancer is growing.

Ozhuz and his crooks still keep thousands and thousands of euros worth of medical equipment and medicines inside the shelter. All that material is ours.. the medicines will be expiring soon and we need them in order to treat the injured and sick dogs lying half dead in
front of the shelter whilst the lazy veterinarians drink tea and waste their time reading fashion magazines.

Ozhuz has once again refused to return our property.. his reasoning?

We returned your mobile clinics because we are good understanding wonderful people, everybody knows Mr. Ergul is a great honest man, very handsome, loved in Turkey and all over the world.. (lie... they returned the clinics because they were ours and our lawyer told them return them or else.. hes not handsome either.. .). You told everybody that we admitted guilt by returning your property so now you will not see anything else!

Mr. Ozhuz was foaming down the corners of his mouth whilst he was uttering those words... a thick vein could be seen bulding on the
sides of his fat neck... he was not a happy man.

Mr. Ozhuz is very upset because this blog is depicting him as a brute and his boss as a liar.

We dont understand why he is so upset... we really dont..

Anyway.. time to time.. this is going to take a while but in the end he will apologize to all of us.. and in the end he will pay.

Let the medical equipment go to waste Mr. Brute. Let the medecines that would serve to save lives go to rot Mr. Cleaner...

Far from being the "death camps" as you have heard so often, places like Auschwitz, Dachau and Buchenwald were not in the business of extermination. They were work camps, critical to the German war effort. But did you know that the Jewish workers were compensated for their labor with scrip printed specifically for their use in stores, canteens and even brothels? The prisoner monetary system was conceived in ghettos such as Lodz, carried to camps such as Auschwitz and Dachau and still existed in the displaced persons camps that were established by the Allies after World War II. Here is the story of the money the court historians do not want you to even suspect existed.

Piles of incinerated corpses were indicting images at Nuremberg, used to prove that the German-run concentration camps during World War II were intended for purposes of exterminating the Jews of Europe. However, a plethora of documentary evidence, long suppressed, shows that prisoners were relatively well-treated, compensated for their hard work and allowed to purchase luxuries to which even the German public did not have ready access. This is not the image of abject deprivation that the Holocaust lobby would like you to entertain.

The above collage, taken from the cover of Das Lagergeld der Konzentrations- und D.P.-Lager: 1933-1945 by Albert Pick and Carl Siemsen, shows just a sample of the money printed for camps and ghettos. The predominantly-white note on the right says: "Jewish Money. Only legal as a means of payment for Jewish work within the ghetto Sokolka. City Treasury of Sokolka, The Mayor."

The irrefutable proof is the existence of a means of exchange for goods and services: Money. There were at least 134 separate issues, in different denominations and styles, for such notorious places as Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Oranienburg, Ravensbrück, Westerbork and at least 15 other camps. (See Paper Money of the World Part I: Modern Issues of Europe by Arnold Keller, Ph.D., 1956, pp. 23-25 for a complete listing.)

A monetary system was also in existence in the ghettos, most notably Theresienstadt and Lodz, which produced beautiful notes (veritable works of art) that make U.S. currency look dull.

There are numerous dealers in rare currency and numismatics who specialize in selling "concentration camp money" or "Holocaust money" as it has been sometimes called. But the very fact of its existence does not seem to have raised questions - as it should have - about what really did (and did not) happen inside the so-called "death camps" where the Holocaust scrip was circulating in the first place.

This scrip was not negotiable outside of the camp for which it was issued. This decreased the chance of a successful escape and made it impossible for the general public to purchase some of the rare luxuries available in the camps. According to Albert Pick in Das Lagergeld der Konzentrations- und D.P.-Lager: 1933-1945:

Oranienburg was the first known camp to have Lagergeld for its prisoners. The issues for this particular camp were in 5 Pfg. (green), 10 Pfg. (blue), 50 Pfg. (brown) and 1 Mark denominations. (Printed 1933 - August 1934, when the camp closed.) Unlike Theresienstadt, these notes were fairly plain without multiple colors and watermarks. Yet even these demonstrate the care and attention given to the design of money for the workers.

Inmates were not paid for the work but were given "coupons" now and then to buy things in the "Kantine".... As the war progressed badly and the number of workers declined, the KZ worker potential became important. Offers of "premiums" and other advantages were made to the inmates, tobacco was offered and even visits to bordellos.... In order that these scrips could not be used outside the camps, special money was printed.

I must write you something about myself. I am very well. In the canteen I buy honey, marmalade, cookies, fruit and other food. If you worry about me, you'll indeed be committing a sin. There was a payment schedule at Theresienstadt utilizing Th. kr. (Theresienstadt kroner) as the unit of exchange. (The Shekel Vol. XVI, No. 2, March-April 1983 p. 29). The breakdown looked like this:

Working men, according to their jobs: 105-205 Th. kr.
Working women, according to their jobs: 95-205 Th. kr.
Part-time workers: 80 Th. kr.
Caretakers: 70 Th. kr.
War-wounded and holders of the Iron Cross, First Class degree or higher: 195 Th. kr.
Prominente (doctors, professors, scientists, well-known cultural artists and politicians): 145 Th. kr.

To put this in perspective, a cup of coffee cost 2 Th. kr. The circulation in Theresienstadt was such that it was necessary to print over 5 million notes. See Papirove Penize Na Uzemi Ceskoslovenska 1762-1975, Second Edition, 1975, Hradek Kralove, trans. by Julius Sem, pp. 134-135.

The first worker's camp to have its own scrip was Oranienburg. Before using the camp scrip they used German currency in nearby towns, but the authorities decided to centralize. Currency was exchanged for camp money, less 30%. (The Shekel, Vol XVI, No. 2, March-April 1983, p. 40: "Concentration Camp Money of the Nazi Holocaust" by Steven Feller.)

Similarly at Buchenwald:

Each prisoner was allowed up to 10 marks per week to be used for the purchase of cigarettes at the camp canteen, other canteen purchases, brothel visits, or credit to a savings account. The regulations went on to specify that a visit to a brothel would cost 2 marks for which 1.5 marks would be kept by the SS and 0.5 marks would be used for "expenses." (Ibid., p. 41.)

Was there a similar situation at all of the other camps - at least those that issued currency? As this includes Auschwitz, it would be shocking indeed to even consider marmalade and cigarettes being purchased in this "death camp." Even the existence of money in camps gives us a look at what life was really like there, yet this information has yet to make it to the History Channel.

Dachau "... [W]e must remember that like most other Concentration Camps, Dachau also functioned as a work camp. This explains the appearance of paper tokens printed in 1944.... Dachau's tokens were of three different values: 1, 2 and 3 marks. The prisoner's identification number is written on the front of this green note, alongside the date when it was issued, January 31, 1945. What's actually annoying (other than Benson) is the sheer number of Injen license plate frames out there. I don't know what I see more of; DUB or Injen.

Despite that fact, it's actually pretty difficult to find a picture of one on a car. I was hoping for a picture of one on an Altima or something.

Why would anyone put these things on anyway? It's like wearing a badge of shame. Having an Injen license plate frame on your car screams "I am the definition of 'ricer.' I know nothing about cars and have horrendous taste."

Oh jeebus, look at that..

I was thinking that if enough people agreed and enough people saw that fact, then people would stop putting these things on or even take them off. Help me start a revolution.

Inzwischen müssten Sie über die gestrige Entdeckung von Hundemassengräbern in Antalya gehört haben. Wir werden bezüglich dieser Entdeckung nicht ins Detail gehen, denn es steht alles in den Artikeln unten. Aber auf jeden Fall will ich eine kurze Zusammenfassung liefern:

Verbrecherische Gemeindeverwaltungen gehen herum und sammeln in einem nutzlosen Versuch, die Straßen vor Beginn der Urlaubszeit zu „reinigen“, kastrierte Hunde ein. Das ist nicht nur nutzlos, es ist ein Verbrechen, denn diese Tiere sind durch das Tierschutzgesetz geschützt. Gemeindeverwaltungen bringen Hunderte von Hunden um, verbrennen sie an einem entfernt gelegenen Ort, die Hunde werden von Tierschützern gefunden, die Bilder gelangen in die Medien und ins Internet, werden über die ganze Welt verteilt, und die Türkei steht am Ende wieder als der barbarischste Ort der Welt da, was so nicht stimmt. Tatsache ist, dass ein paar ganz üble Menschen hier leben und ausgerechnet in Gemeinderäten sitzen. Das sollte nicht das Bild eines ganzen Landes beschmutzen, aber über weite Strecken tut es das.

Dies hier ist ein wunderschönes Land, aber jedes Mal, wenn einer dieser kriminellen Bürgermeister wie der Bürgermeister von Beykoz, Muharrem Ergul, oder jetzt der Bürgermeister von Antalya beschließt, einen Massenmord zu begehen, endet es damit, dass das Land als Ganzes mit Blut befleckt ist.

Erst gestern hatte ich ein Gespräch mit der Vertreterin der weltgrößten Tierschutzorganisation. Sie sagte mir, dass sie versuchen werde, sich auf die Türkei als Ganzes zu konzentrieren statt auf konkrete Fälle. Meine Antwort an sie war sehr einfach. Konkrete Fälle, wie die Gräueltaten, die Muharrem Ergul in Beykoz begangen hat, müssen zuerst gewonnen werden, bevor wir unsere Aufmerksamkeit dem Gesamtbild zuwenden. Wir brauchen Präzedenzfälle, um diese Präzedenzfälle dann auf die übrigen Gemeindeverwaltungen anwenden zu können.

Jetzt sage ich Ihnen, was hier passieren wird. Der Bürgermeister von Antalya wird mit einer neuen Polyesterkrawatte in den Nachrichten erscheinen, ähnlich denen, die der Bürgermeister von Beykoz trägt, er wird allen erzählen, dass er ein Tierfreund ist, der damit nichts zu tun hat. Er wird so weit gehen, diese Morde den Besitzern der China-Restaurants in die Schuhe zu schieben, wie es – ob Sie es glauben oder nicht – schon immer getan wurde. Und es wird immer Idioten mit winzigen Gehirnen geben, wie Rosemarie Schulz und Adile Pannicke, die berüchtigten Soziopathen, getarnt als Tierschützer, die zur Verteidigung dieser kriminellen Bürgermeister herbei eilen werden.

Nesrin Citirik von DOHAYKO wird diesmal nicht viel sagen. Schließlich haben diese Leute die Ereignisse in Beykoz inszeniert und kämpfen jetzt darum, ihre Glaubwürdigkeit, die sie wegen dieser Geschichte verloren haben, wieder zu gewinnen. Es wird schwer werden, ein Jahrzehnt von Wahnsinn und Paranoia vergessen zu machen.

Die meisten Mitglieder unserer Gruppe leben in Istanbul, aber wir arbeiten daran, in den größten Städten der Türkei präsent zu sein. Wir haben bereits ein Netzwerk in Ankara und werden bald Netzwerke in Izmir und Antalya starten. Unser Ziel ist es, das größte inoffizielle Tierschutznetzwerk der Türkei zu schaffen, aber eines, das wirklich etwas tut, etwas erreicht, ein Netzwerk, das eingesetzt werden kann, um notleidenden Tieren zu helfen.

Vor ein paar Tagen fragte mich jemand: “Weshalb sollte ich für die eine oder andere Seite Stellung beziehen? Ich sorge mich nur um die Tiere.

Meine Antwort lautet: Solange Sie nicht Stellung beziehen und nur Aktionismus an den Tag legen, wird sich nichts ändern, und die Tiere werden weiterhin sterben.
